To improve the sustainability and environmental accountability of the banana industry there is a need to develop a set of soil health indicators that integrate physical, chemical and biological soil properties. These indicators would allow banana growers, extension and research workers to improve soil health management practices. To determine changes in soil properties due to the cultivation of bananas, a paired site survey was conducted comparing soil properties under conventional banana systems to less intensively managed vegetation systems, such as pastures and forest. Measurements were made on physical, chemical and biological soil properties at seven locations in tropical and sub-tropical banana producing areas. Soil nematode community composition was used as a bioindicator of the biological properties of the soil. Soils under conventional banana production tended to have a greater soil bulk density, with less soil organic carbon (C) (both total C and labile C), greater exchangeable cations, higher extractable P, greater numbers of plant-parasitic nematodes and less nematode diversity, relative to less intensively managed plant systems. The organic banana production systems at two locations had greater labile C, relative to conventional banana systems, but there was no significant change in nematode community composition. There were significant interactions between physical, chemical and nematode community measurements in the soil, particularly with soil C measurements, confirming the need for a holistic set of indicators to aid soil management. There was no single indicator of soil health for the Australian banana industry, but a set of soil health indicators, which would allow the measurement of soil improvements should include: bulk density, soil C, pH, EC, total N, extractable P, ECEC and soil nematode community structure.

Heavy nitrogen fertilisation is often implemented in maize cropping systems, but it can have negative environmental effects. Nitrogen-fixing, phytohormone-producing Azospirillum plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have been proposed as crop inoculants to maintain high yield when decreasing nitrogen fertilisation. In this context, agronomic and ecological effects of the inoculation of maize seeds with the PGPR Azospirillum lipoferum CRT1 were studied in two consecutive years. The inoculant was recovered from maize at 105 CFU g−1 root or higher. Inoculation enhanced root growth and development based on results of root biomass, rooting depth and/or parameters describing root system architecture, and a transient positive effect on shoot height was observed in the first year. Inoculation did not increase yield, but reducing mineral nitrogen fertilisation had only a minor effect on yield. This suggests that the lack of positive effect of the PGPR on yield was due to the fact that the whole field was heavily fertilised in years prior to the start of the experiment. Soil nitrogen levels decreased during the 2 years of the study, and the inoculant had no effect on residual soil nitrogen levels at harvest. Inoculation had no impact on Fusarium symptoms and concentration of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol in maize kernels, but both were influenced by the interaction between inoculation and nitrogen fertilisation level. Inoculation did not influence meso/macrofaunal soil populations, but had a small but significant effect (smaller than the effect of added nitrogen) on decomposition, nitrogen mineralisation and mesofaunal colonisation of maize leaves (in litter bags). Overall, the ecological impact of seed inoculation with the PGPR A. lipoferum CRT1 was small, and its magnitude was smaller than that of chemical nitrogen fertilisation.

Soil water and nutrients play an important role in increasing sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) yields in the Vertisols of semi-arid tropics during post-rainy season. The effects of tillage practices, organic materials and nitrogen fertilizer on soil properties, water conservation and yield of sorghum were evaluated during winter seasons of 1994–1995 and 1995–1996 on deep Vertisols at Bijapur in the semi-arid tropics of Karnataka State (Zone 3) of south India. Conservation and availability of water and nutrients during different stages of crop growth were increased by deeper tillage resulting in increased grain yield of winter sorghum. Medium and deep tillage increased the grain yield by 23% (1509 kg ha−1) and 57% (1919 kg ha−1) during 1994–1995 and 14% (1562 kg ha−1) and 34% (1835 kg ha−1) during 1995–1996, respectively, over shallow tillage. Water use efficiency increased from shallow (4.90 kg ha−1 mm−1) to deep tillage (7.30 kg ha−1 mm−1). Greater water use efficiency during 1994–1995 as compared to 1995–1996 was attributed to lower consumptive use of water during 1994–1995. Among organic materials, application of Leucaena loppings conserved larger amounts of water and increased winter sorghum yield and water use efficiency. Application of Leucaena loppings increased the winter sorghum grain yield by 9% (mean of 1994–1995 and 1995–1996) as compared to vermicompost. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher water use efficiency of 6.32 kg ha−1 mm−1 was observed in Leucaena loppings incorporated plots compared to 5.72 kg ha−1 mm−1 from vermicompost. Grain yield increased by 245 kg ha−1 with application of 25 kg N ha−1 in 1994–1995, and a further increase in N application to 50 kg ha−1 increased the grain yield by about 349 kg ha−1 in 1995–1996. Deep tillage with application of 25 kg N ha−1 resulted in significantly higher sorghum yield (2047 kg ha−1) than control during 1994–1995. Deep tillage with integrated nutrient management (organic and inorganic N sources) conserved higher amount of soil water and resulted in increased sorghum yields especially during drought years.

Tillage experiments were carried out in order to study the effect of water content on the aggregate size distribution produced by tillage, and to investigate the relationship between the soil structures produced by tillage and Dexter's index of soil physical quality, S. Tillage with a mouldboard plough was done on four different soils over a range of naturally occurring water contents. The aggregate size distribution and the specific surface area produced by tillage were obtained by sieving. We define the optimum water content for tillage, θOPT, as the water content at which the specific surface area of the aggregates produced is maximum. This is consistent with the water content at which the amount of small aggregates produced is greatest and the proportion of clods produced is smallest. For the four investigated soils, θOPT was found to be close to the water content at the inflection point of the water retention curve, and in the vicinity of 0.8θPL (where θPL is the lower plastic limit). At water contents either lower or higher than θOPT, the specific surface area produced was smaller. The specific surface area produced at θOPT was found to be strongly correlated with the index of soil physical quality, S. The specific surface area produced is larger the greater S, i.e. the better the soil physical quality. Consistently, the proportion of small aggregates produced at θOPT is larger and the proportion of clods produced at θOPT smaller, the greater S. No clods (>50 mm) are produced on soils with good physical quality.

Summary The effects of different litter input rates and of different types of litter on soil organic matter accumulation and net N mineralization were investigated in plant communities dominated by Erica tetralix L. or Molinia caerulea (L.) Moench. Plots in which the litter on the soil had repeatedly been removed were compared with plots in the same plant community in which litter had been added to the soil. In another treatment, litter was removed and replaced by litter from the other plant community. Net N mineralization was measured in situ after 5 years. Less soil organic matter and soil N was found in plots in which litter had been removed, compared with control plots, or plots to which litter had been added, but these differences were significant for the Erica sp. soils only. Plots in which litter had been replaced and control plots did not differ significantly in the amount of soil organic matter. However, in both plant communities, the differences agreed with the faster decomposition rate of Molinia sp. litter compared with Erica sp. litter. The gravimetric soil moisture content was correlated positively with the amount of soil organic matter, both in the Erica sp. soils and the Molinia sp. soils. Net N mineralization rates (g N m-2) differed significantly between treatments for Erica sp. soils but no for Molinia sp. soils. For Erica sp. soils, net N mineralization rates increased with increasing amounts of soil organic matter and soil N. Replacing the litter with Molinia sp. litter (which differs in chemical composition) had no clear additional effect on the net N mineralization rate.

The ATP content, soil respiration, bacterial community composition, and gross N mineralization and immobilization rates were monitored under laboratory condition at 25 °C for 28 d in a model system where low molecular weight root exudates (glucose and oxalic acid) were released by a filter placed on the surface of a forest soil also treated with 15N, so as to simulate rhizosphere conditions. Periodically, the soil was sampled from two layers, 0-2 and 6-14 mm below the filter's surface, which were indicated as rhizosphere and bulk soils, respectively. The isotope dilution technique was used to determine the effect of these low molecular weight organic compounds (LMWOCs) on gross N mineralization and immobilization rates. From 0 to 3 d both glucose and oxalic acid amended soils showed a rapid evolution of CO2, more pronunced in the latter treatment together with a decrease in the amount of mineral N of the rhizosphere soil, probably due to N immobilization. Nevertheless, these changes were accompanied by a very small increase in the net ATP content probably because the low C application rate stimulated microbial activity but microbial growth only slightly. A positive ‘priming effect’ probably developed in the oxalic acid amended soil but not in the glucose amended soil. Gross N mineralization and immobilization rates were only observed in the rhizosphere soil, probably due to the greater C and N concentrations and microbial activity, and were a little higher in both amended soils than in the control soil, only between 1 and 7 d. Both glucose and oxalic acid influenced the bacterial communities of the rhizosphere soil, as new bands in the DGGE profiles appeared at 3 and 7 d. Glucose induced lower changes in the bacterial community than oxalic acid, presumably because the former stimulated a larger proportion of soil microorganisms whereas the latter was decomposed by specialized microorganisms. Peaks of net daily soil respiration and net ATP content and the appearence of new dominant bacterial populations were shifted in time, probably because there was less ATP synthesis and DGGE patterns changed after complete substrate mineralization.

Summary The effects of white, black and clear polyethylene mulches on temporal fluctuations in protease, sulphatase and phosphatase activities and levels of available and biomass N, S and P in raised beds of soil under a strawberry crop were investigated under field conditions. During spring, summer and early autumn, clear and, to a lesser extent black, polyethylene mulch increased both maximum and minimum mean monthly temperatures over those recorded with white mulch or no mulch. During summer and autumn, soil moisture content measured at monthly intervals was higher under mulched than unmulched conditions. Levels of extractable nitrate and sulphate in soils during autumn followed the order: clear mulch = black mulch > white mulch > no mulch. However, there were no significant differences in levels of enzyme activity or concentrations of biomass N, S or P between treatments. There were significant seasonal fluctuations in estimates of biomass N, S and P, but there was no close relationship between fluctuations in any estimate. This discrepancy was attributed to errors in the chloroform fumigation technique. Enzyme activities showed significant temporal fluctuations but the three enzymes did not show similar times of minimum and maximum activity. The complexity of interactions between soil microbial and biochemical properties and nutrient availability was exemplified by the absence of a discernible relationship between seasonal fluctuations in enzyme activities and levels of biomass N, S and P and/or levels of extractable mineral N, S and P in the soil. Strawberry fruit yields and vegetative growth followed the order : clear mulch = black mulch>white mulch>no mulch. Clear, and to a lesser extent black mulch increased the percentage of total yields produced in the first 2 months of cropping.

Summary A study was conducted to determine the effects of grinding, added N, and the absence of soil on C mineralization from agricultural plant residues with a high C:N ratio. The evolution of CO2 from ground and unground wheat straw, lentil straw, and lentil green manure, with C:N ratios of 80, 36, and 9, respectively, was determined over a period of 98 days. Treatments with added N were included with the wheat and lentil straw. Although the CO2 evolution was initially much faster from the lentil green manure than from the lentil or wheat straw, by 98 days similar amounts of CO2 had evolved from all residues incubated in soil with no added N. Incubation of plant residues in the absence of soil had little effect on CO2 evolution from the lentil green manure or lentil straw but strongly reduced CO2 evolution from the wheat straw. Grinding did not affect CO2 evolution from the lentil green manure but increased CO2 evolution from the lentil straw with no added N and from the wheat straw. The addition of N increased the rate of CO2 evolution from ground wheat straw between days 4 and 14 but not from unground wheat straw, and only slightly increased the rate of CO2 evolution from lentil straw during the initial decomposition. Over 98 days, the added N reduced the amounts of CO2 evolved from both lentil and wheat straw, due to reduced rates of CO2 evolution after ca. 17 days. The lack of an N response during the early stages of decomposition may be attributed to the low C:N ratio of the soluble straw component and to microbial adaptations to an N deficiency, while the inhibitory effect of N on CO2 evolution during the later stages of decomposition may be attributed to effects of high mineral N concentrations on lignocellulolytic microorganisms and enzymes.

Summary A pot experiment in the greenhouse was conducted to compare the contribution of N derived from the atmosphere or from biological N2 fixation by Sesbania rostrata inoculated with Azorhizobium caulinodans, applied either to roots or to roots and stems (single or multiple stem inoculation). Two subsequent crops were grown for 50 days under flooded conditions. N derived from air was estimated by 15N dilution using 15N enrichment of soil NH inf4 sup+ -N and of Echinochloa crusgalli as the non-N2-fixing reference datum and compared with estimates obtained by the N-difference method. The first crop was grown to stabilize the 15N into the soil organic N fraction. The 15N enrichment of soil NH inf4 sup+ -N in the second crop declined slowly. The extractability ratio (15N enrichment of extractable soil N to 15N enrichment of total soil N) decreased from 4.8 to 4.1 50 days after planting. The enrichment of soil NH inf4 sup+ -N was comparable to that of E. crus-galli, resulting in similar estimates of N derived from air when either soil NH inf4 sup+ -N or enrichment of E. crus-galli was used as a non-fixing reference. The N-difference method did not always provide reliable estimates of N derived from air; percentages ranged from 75 to more than 80 by 50 days after planting in both crops and did not differ among treatments. The study demonstrates the potential of using 15N enrichment of soil NH inf4 sup+ -N as a non-N2-fixing reference for reliable BNF estimates of crops in lowland puddled soil.
