The quality of different classes of forage hay (C3, C4 grasses and legumes) was determined in intake and digestibility trials with mature cattle, sheep and goats. For all nine hays, DM and NDF digestibility by cattle and goats was higher (P less than .05) than by sheep, with no differences due to forage class. Cattle had a higher (P less than .01) DM intake than sheep or goats averaged across forage (92.6 vs 65.8 and 68.6 g/kg BW.75); hay intake was highest on legume, with no difference between C3 and C4 grasses. Mean NDF intake by cattle was greater than by sheep or goats (58.7 vs 39.6 and 42.6 g/kg BW.75); NDF intake for all animal species decreased in the order C4 grass greater than C3 grass greater than legume. Particle passage rates did not differ (P greater than .05) with forage class but were higher (P less than .02) for sheep and goats than for cattle. Prefeeding ruminal DM fill values, determined by emptying, were 10.6, 15.0 and 19.9 g/kg BW1.0 for alfalfa, orchardgrass and switchgrass hays fed to cattle, and 11.2, 11.3 and 16.5 g/kg BW1.0 for the same hays fed to sheep. Estimated turnover times for DM and NDF were shorter (P less than .05) for sheep than for cattle; DM turnover was longer for switchgrass than for alfalfa and orchardgrass, with no forage differences in NDF turnover between these two animal species. Results show that goats were superior to sheep in NDF digestion.  相似文献

Effect of purified slaframine (SF; 1-acetoxy-6-aminooctahydroindolizine), a parasympathomimetic secretagogue isolated from Rhizoctonia leguminicola, on ruminal motility was investigated in cattle and sheep. In trial 1, four ruminal cannulated wethers, fed a pelleted concentrate and hay diet, were injected intramuscularly with 0, 12, 24 and 48 micrograms SF/kg body weight (BW) in a 4 X 4 Latin-square design. Ruminal motility was recorded 1 h before and 1 to 2 h and 3 to 4 h after SF administration by measuring pressure changes exerted upon a fluid-filled, open-tipped catheter inserted into the dorsal sac of the rumen. The frequencies of both primary and secondary ruminal contractions were decreased as much as 20 to 78% with SF (P less than .05) depending upon the dosage level and time after administration. In trial 2, three ruminal-cannulated steers fed a concentrated diet were injected intramuscularly with 0, 12 and 24 micrograms SF/kg BW in a 3 X 3 Latin-square design. A water-filled balloon inserted into the cranial sac of the rumen was used to measure ruminal pressure changes 1 h before and 1 to 2 h, 3 to 4 h and 7 to 8 after SE administration. Frequency of primary and secondary ruminal contractions decreased with SF as much as 27 to 64% depending on the dosage level and time after administration. Four ruminally cannulated Holstein steers (average BW 303 kg) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design digestion trial to study the influence of daily cottonseed meal (CSM; 1.6 g of CP/kg of BW) supplementation time on forage intake and ruminal fluid kinetics and fermentation. Steers were housed individually in tie stalls and were fed chopped fescue hay on an ad libitum basis at 0600 and 1400. Treatments were 1) control, grass hay only (CON) and grass hay and CSM fed once daily at 2) 0600 (EAM) 3) 1000 (MAM), or 4) 1400 (PM). Ruminal NH3 N concentrations reflected a time of supplementation x sampling time interaction (P less than .05); CON steers had the lowest (P less than .05) ruminal NH3 N concentrations at all times other than at 0600, 1000, 1200, and 2400, when they did not differ (P greater than .05) from at least one of the supplemented groups. Forage intake, ratio of bacterial purine:N, rate of DM and NDF disappearance, and ruminal fluid kinetics were not influenced (P greater than .05) by supplementation time. Total ruminal VFA differed (P less than .05) between CON and supplemented steers, as well as among supplemented steers (linear and quadratic effects P less than .05). Acetate, propionate, and valerate proportions were influenced (P less than .05) by a sampling time X supplementation time interaction. Under the conditions of this study, greater peak ammonia concentrations with morning supplementation than with afternoon supplementation did not stimulate ruminal fermentation or rate of NDF disappearance.  相似文献

The preference exhibited by animals in selecting one feed over another is important only if the preferred diet is consumed daily in larger quantities, digested to a greater extent, or both. Six alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) hays were harvested in pairs at sunset (PM) and sunrise (AM) on consecutive days at three harvest dates. A previous study of these hays demonstrated differences in ruminant preference favoring PM harvests. This study evaluated the effects of time of cutting and harvest date on voluntary DMI and nutrient digestibility. The hays were field-cured, baled, and chopped before evaluation for intake and digestibility. Studies were conducted for sheep (Ovis aries), goats (Capra hircus), and cattle (Bos taurus). Goats, but not steers or sheep, demonstrated differences in nutrient digestibility between PM- and AM-cut hays. Goats consumed more PM than AM hay (2.97 vs. 2.83 kg/100 kg of BW; P = 0.07) and digested it to a greater extent (0.710 vs. 0.696; P = 0.03), resulting in greater digestible DMI (2.11 vs. 1.97 kg/100 kg of BW; P = 0.03). Sheep consumed (mean = 2.52 kg/100 kg of BW; P = 0.59) and digested (mean = 0.681; P = 0.25) PM- and AM-cut hays similarly. Steers consumed larger quantities of PM-than AM-cut hay (2.90 vs. 2.62 kg/100 kg of BW; P = 0.11), but digestion did not differ with cutting time (mean = 0.660; P = 0.75). Difference values (composition of fed hay minus composition of orts) indicated that sheep and goats selected from the feed offered similarly, whereas steers selected differently. A 2(3) factorial arrangement of treatments was used to study main effects and interactions between particle size of prairie hay (chopped vs ground), two levels of feed intake (60 and 90% of ad libitum) and ruminal degradability of protein sources [dry corn gluten feed (DCGF) vs dry distillers grains (DDG)] on ruminal and total tract digestion in eight ruminal- and duodenal-cannulated steers. Steers were fed every 2 h to approach steady-state feeding conditions. Steers fed ground hay diets digested higher (P less than .05) percentages of total digestible organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in the rumen and had lower (P less than .05) nonammonia-nonbacterial N (NANBN) flows to the duodenum than did those fed chopped hay, probably because greater surface area of ground hay allowed more extensive ruminal fermentation. Protein source X intake interactions were noted for ruminal OM and NDF digestion when expressed as percentages of total digestion. At low intakes, steers fed DCGF had higher (P less than .05) percentages of total digestible OM and NDF disappearing in the rumen than did those fed DDG. Steers fed DCGF had lower total N, NANBN and total amino acid (AA) flows at the duodenum than did those fed DDG, indicating that less DCGF protein escaped ruminal degradation. Steers fed DDG had greater (P less than .05) total tract NDF digestion, suggesting that escape protein from DDG may stimulate hindgut fermentation and thereby affect site and extent of nutrient digestion. Regression analysis indicated that extent of ruminal fermentation and efficiency of microbial growth in vivo are associated with ruminal rates of passage within individual animals. When steers were fed at high-intake levels (1.6% of body weight), ruminal dilution rates were not increased (P less than .05) due to forage particle size or level of intake treatments, accounting, in part, for the lack of expected treatment differences in efficiency of bacterial growth and duodenal N flow, and for the low number of interactions between main effects.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out with sheep that originated from a fauna-free flock and were fed a soybean meal-corn silage diet with or without a bentonite supplement. One-half of the sheep fed each diet in each experiment were faunated with a mixed population of ruminal protozoa, whereas the other half of the sheep remained fauna-free until the end of both experiments. Wool growth and daily gain were measured in Exp. 1. (eight rams per treatment), which lasted 110 d, and the metabolic effects in the rumen and intestinal tract of protozoa and dietary bentonite supplement were tested with cannulated wethers (four wethers per treatment) in Exp. 2. The results of Exp. 1 showed decreased wool growth (P less than .05) due to the presence of protozoa in the rumen. Dietary supplementation with bentonite partly offset the decreased wool growth in sheep with protozoa, but there were no effects of dietary bentonite and no protozoa x bentonite interaction (P greater than .05). Daily gain was decreased by the dietary bentonite (P less than .05) supplement but was not affected (P greater than .05) by the ruminal presence of protozoa. In Exp. 2, protozoa increased (P less than .01) the ruminal concentrations of ammonia and decreased (P less than .05) the acetic:propionic acid molar ratio. Fractionation of N in the duodenal digesta flowing from the stomach to the small intestine showed that protozoa decreased (P less than .05) the flow of nonammonia N and bacterial N, and there was a protozoa x bentonite interaction for these effects (P less than .05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Four Suffolk x Hampshire wether lambs averaging 55 kg with permanent ruminal cannulas were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design to determine the effects of exchange of ruminal contents between fed and fasted lambs on subsequent DMI and ruminal characteristics. Lambs were fed a pelleted 70% roughage diet at 2% of BW for 17 d. During each period of the Latin square two lambs were deprived of feed and water for 3 d. At the end of the fasting period ruminal contents from one fed and one fasted lamb were exchanged. Lambs were then given ad libitum access to feed for 8 d, during which DMI, feeding pattern, and ruminal characteristics were monitored. Measurements of ruminal volume determined by total collection and indigestible marker (lithium sulfate) suggested that only about 50% of total ruminal contents were actually exchanged. Fasted lambs had lower (P less than .05) DMI, ruminal fermentative capacity, ruminal DM weight, and ruminal DM percentage than fed lambs during the first 4 d of realimentation. Exchange of ruminal contents did not (P greater than .10) affect DMI, feeding pattern, ruminal fluid pH, ruminal fermentative capacity, ruminal contents DM percentage, ruminal nucleic acid concentration, or VFA. Dosing fasted lambs with ruminal contents from nonfasted lambs reduced (P less than .05) ruminal liquid volume, dry weight of ruminal contents, and propionate concentration. Results of this trial are interpreted to indicate that although decreased ruminal function is a factor in the low feed intakes of fasted ruminants, the possibility of increasing postfast feed intake via improved ruminal function is limited because other metabolic factors may play a more important role.  相似文献

Two latin squares were conducted to determine the effects on feed intake and nutrient digestion of adding a ruminal buffer or DL-methionine to supplemental ground corn for Holstein steers (avg BW of 286 and 222 kg in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively) with ad libitum access to bermudagrass hay. In Exp. 1, steers were not supplemented (control) or were given .5 (LC) or 1.0% BW/d (HC) of ground corn without or with .021% BW of sodium bicarbonate (B). Total DMI was 2.39, 2.71, 2.79, 2.81 and 2.98% BW (effects of supplementation [P less than .05], level of corn [P less than .05] and buffer [P less than .06]), and OM digested was 3.56, 4.65, 4.65, 4.96 and 5.34 kg/d for control, LC, LCB, HC and HCB, respectively (effects of supplementation and corn level, P less than .05). In Exp. 2, corn levels were .24 and .74% BW/d and .0022% BW of DL-methionine (M) replaced B. Total DMI was 2.85, 3.00, 2.99, 3.22 and 3.34% BW (effects of supplementation and corn level, P less than .05), and digestible OM intake was 3.78, 4.24, 4.30, 4.84 and 5.12 kg/d for control, LC, LCM, HC and HCM, respectively (effects of supplementation and corn level, P less than .05). Overall, changes in feed intake and digestion with additions of a ruminal buffer and DL-methionine to corn supplements were not marked; however, buffer addition increased DMI intake to the greatest degree with 1.0% BW/d of corn.  相似文献

In order to study the main effects of particle size, three ruminally fistulated cows (550 to 580 kg BW) were fed a constant low concentrate level (3.56 kg DM/d, 20% of total DMI) and a fibre-rich hay (approximately 60% NDF in DM) in long (28.7 mm), chopped (9.2 mm) and fine ground (2.9 mm) form in a 3 x 3 Latin square design. In another three factorial experiment with 8 wethers (4 animals were ruminally fistulated, mean BW = 68 kg) the main effects and interactions of the above mentioned hay particle sizes at two concentrate levels (10.4 to 13.3% and 29.5 to 40.1% of DMI, resp.) and two intake levels (restricted and ad libitum) were investigated. In comparison to long hay (28.7 mm), feeding of chopped hay (9.2 mm) at low concentrate levels, increased not only the hay intake (7% in dairy cows and 13% in sheep) but also the intake of digestible organic matter (12% in dairy cows and 32% in sheep), due to an increase in the apparent digestibility of OM by 3.8% in dairy cows and 8.2% in sheep. Ad libitum feeding of fine ground hay in combination with low concentrate amount in the ration increased the passage rate in the hindgut and consequently the hay intake, but not the intake of DOM, due to a significant depression of digestibility, especially of fibre fractions (4 to 7% in dairy cows and 4.5 to 14% in sheep), in comparison to 28.7 and 9.2 mm hay particle sizes. The digestibility decreased significantly with restricted feeding of fine ground hay in sheep only in comparison to 9.2 mm particle size. A threefold increase of concentrate amount leveled out all effects of the particle size reduction. The effect of particle size was more pronounced in sheep than in dairy cows.  相似文献

Eight ruminally cannulated ewes (four control and four bred; average BW = 85.7 kg), limit-fed alfalfa hay (1.86% BW), were used in two experiments to determine the effects of pregnancy and lactation on digestive function and serum metabolites. Seven-day sampling periods were used starting on d 102, 118 and 132 of gestation (Exp. 1) and d 14 and 32 of lactation (Exp. 2). Particulate (6.8 vs 4.9%/h; PPR) and fluid passage rates (13.9 vs 10.9%/h) were greater (P less than .05) and gastrointestinal mean retention time (28.9 vs 35.7 h) and fluid turnover time (FTT, 7.5 vs 9.5 h) were lesser (P less than .05) in pregnant than in nonpregnant ewes, respectively. Isobutyrate concentration was lower (P less than .05) in pregnant (1.7 mol/100 mol) than in nonpregnant (1.9 mol/100 mol) ewes. No differences (P greater than .10) were noted for any other ruminal fermentation measures between pregnant and nonpregnant ewes. In Exp. 2, no differences (P greater than .10) were noted in digesta kinetics or ruminal fermentation measures except for isobutyrate and isovalerate molar proportions and serum urea N (SUN) concentration. Isobutyrate, isovalerate and SUN concentrations (21.8 vs 26.1 mg/dl) were lower (P less than .05) in lactating ewes than in nonlactating ewes. Gastrointestinal fill (5.7 vs 7.7 g/kg BW) and FTT (9.3 vs 12.7 h) were lesser and DM digestion (66.7 vs 57.4%) was greater (P less than .05) in lactating than in nonlactating ewes. Data suggest that, during pregnancy, passage rate increases occur without affecting DM digestion and that, during lactation, PPR is not affected when ewes are limit-fed.  相似文献

Feeding and palatability trials were conducted with four cultivars (cv) of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), fertilized at three levels of N (0, 75, or 150 kg of N/ha) in 2 yr. Wether sheep had ad libitum access to chopped hays, and intake, apparent digestibility, particle passage rates, and concentrations of blood metabolites were determined. Palatability was measured with mature sheep in cafeteria trials. Nitrogen fertilization did not affect (P > .05) DM digestibility (DMD) or DMI, but there was a year x N interaction (P < .01) for NDF digestibility. Dry matter digestibility values for combined years and N levels were 56.9, 54.4, 56.6, and 57.9% (P < .01) for Pathfinder, New Jersey 50, Kentucky 1625, and Trailblazer cv, respectively; mean DMI values were 60.4, 60.8, 57.7, and 64.0 g/kg BW.75 (year x cv, P < .01). An apparently greater quality of Trailblazer was masked by weed invasion of N-fertilized stands of this cv in yr 2, with changes in hay composition. Lambs adapted to hay diets with time; mean DMI for cv and N levels combined increased (P < .001) from 50.5 to 71.4 g/kg BW.75 between wk 2 and 3 and wk 10 and 11, with no change in DMD. Intakes of NDF increased from 37.6 to 55.6 g/kg BW.75, an increase of 48%. Marker (Yb) measurements indicated little change in particle passage rates with treatment. There were no major differences in blood composition, apart from increases in blood urea N, as a result of N fertilization. Cafeteria trials showed preference by sheep for Trailblazer and KY 1625 compared with NJ 50 and Pathfinder, with a N x cv interaction (P < .01). Trailblazer was preferred to KY 1625 in a two-choice situation (P < .01). Results show relatively small effects of cv and N fertilization on quality of switchgrass and indicate the need for a lengthy period of adaptation by sheep to the feeding of a warm-season grass.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of whole shelled corn supplementation on intake and digestibility of low-quality meadow hay by cattle. In Trial 1, four ruminally cannulated steers (avg BW 418 kg) were used in a latin square design with four treatments (no corn or corn fed at .25%, .50% or .75% of BW). Hay DMI decreased (P = .002) linearly .43 g for each gram of increase in corn intake. In contrast, total diet DMI increased (P = .001) linearly as level of corn supplementation increased. Apparent DM digestibility of the diet increased (P = .026) linearly, whereas hay DM digestibility was not affected (P greater than .05) by supplemental corn, although the DM digestion coefficient for hay alone was 24% higher than for hay fed with corn at .75% of BW. Ruminal ammonia concentration and pH were not affected (P greater than .05) by treatments; however, ratio of acetate:propionate and acetate:butyrate responded (P less than or equal to .097) quadratically to increased corn supplementation. Corn supplementation resulted in a cubic (P less than or equal to .081) decrease in meadow hay NDF disappearance from nylon bags suspended in the rumen at all incubation intervals after 4 h. In Trial 2, 45 crossbred, nonlactating, pregnant cows (avg BW 474 kg) were used in a completely randomized design with three treatments (no corn, .91 and 1.81 kg corn.hd-1.d-1). The ability of neuropeptide Y (NPY) to stimulate feed intake was tested in combination with two treatments known to depress feed intake in sheep. Six ewe and three wether lambs (mean BW = 40 kg) fitted with lateral cerebral ventricular guide cannulas and ruminal cannulas had free access to a nutritionally complete, pelleted diet. Balloons placed into the rumen were filled with either 0, 30 or 60 ml of water/kg BW and left in place for 6 h; intake was measured. Based on the decline in feed intake observed with increasing balloon volume in the rumen, Exp. 2 was designed to test effects of NPY injection (0 or 3.0 nmol) into the lateral cerebral ventricle and ruminal distension (0 or 35 ml/kg BW) for 6 h. During the 6-h test period, feed intake was depressed (P less than .05) by intraruminal balloon distension, but feed intake was increased by NPY injection (P less than .05); no interaction between NPY and distension was detected. Ruminal evacuation revealed that digesta occupied only 43% of the rumen's total volume capacity. Balloons occupied 14% of capacity, whereas meal size in control sheep following a 1.5-h fast equaled 7% of capacity. In Exp. 3, intraruminal infusion of 8 mmol/min of propionate depressed (P = .11) feed intake, whereas NPY injection enhanced (P less than .05) intake. There was no interaction between NPY and propionate infusion. In none of these experiments was cumulative feed consumption at 24 h influenced. We conclude that NPY is a versatile feeding stimulant. It promotes feed intake in feed-satiated, ruminally distended and propionate-infused sheep.  相似文献

A 5 X 5 Latin square design involving five cannulated beef steers (342 and 358 kg avg initial and final body weights, respectively) fed prairie hay (76.7% neutral detergent fiber, 5.7% acid detergent lignin and .85% N) was conducted to evaluate effects on feed intake and nutrient digestion of variations in physical characteristics of ruminal digesta achieved by ruminal insertion of different amounts of prairie hay differing in particle size. Steers were fed hay ad libitum in two equal meals (0800 and 2000). At 1200, four of the steers received manual, ruminal insertions of ground hay. Fine hay (F) was ground through a screen with 2-mm openings (.39 mm mean particle size), whereas coarse hay (C) was ground through a screen with 2.54-cm openings (4.46 mm mean particle size). Amounts of hay inserted were .2 (low, L) or .4% (high, H of initial body weight of individual steers. Ruminal hay insertions comprised 18% of total dry matter (DM) intake for L and 34 and 37% for HF and HC, respectively. Fed hay consumption decreased (P less than .05) with hay insertion and was lower for H than L; total DM intake was not influenced by treatment (P greater than .10). The effects of source and level of dietary NDF on intake, ruminal digestion in situ, ruminal fermentation, and total tract digestion were evaluated in Hereford steers using a replicated 5 x 5 Latin square design. Diets contained 62 to 64% TDN and included 1) 80% control concentrate (contained pelleted ground grains) and 20% timothy hay (traditional diet), 2) 80% control concentrate and 20% alfalfa cubes, 3) 90% control concentrate and 10% cubes, 4) a completely pelleted diet using corn cobs as the primary NDF source, and 5) 80% textured (rolled instead of ground grains) concentrate and 20% hay. Dry matter intake differed (P less than .05) between the traditional and cube diets due to limited acceptance of alfalfa cubes. Increased (P less than .05) ruminal osmolality, total VFA, and NH3 N and lower (P less than .01) ruminal pH in steers fed corn cob and cube diets relative to steers fed the traditional diet were due to preferential consumption of concentrate over supplemental roughage and the resultant rapid fermentation of concentrates. Potentially degradable DM in the traditional diet exceeded (P less than .06) all other diets, resulting in the increased (P less than .10) extent of DM disappearance despite a slower (P less than .05) rate of DM disappearance. Rate of NDF disappearance and all in situ starch disappearance parameters were similar between the traditional, corn cob, and cube diets. All ruminal digestion parameters involving NDF disappearance were similar between hay diets and between cube diets, whereas rate and extent of starch disappearance differed (P less than .05) between hay diets. Although formulation of diets with different sources of dietary NDF did not affect total tract digestion of nutrients, nutrient availability and ruminal fermentation were altered due to dietary differences in sources of dietary NDF and preferential selection of feedstuffs by steers.  相似文献

The dry season in tropical regions urges livestock to feed on nutritionally very poor diets. It has not been explored how tropical sheep—assumed grazers—and tropical goats—intermediate browsers—cope with a high-fibre tannin-rich diet. This study was designed to determine the effects of a high-fibre and tannin-rich diet on the flow of important microminerals iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) throughout the digestive tract of tropical sheep and goats. The feeding trial was set up with twelve adult male animals, six sheep with mean body weight (BW) of 30.3 ± 1.6 kg and six goats with mean BW of 26.4 ± 2.2 kg. The feed consisted of 36% leaves of Millettia ferruginea, 61% hay and 3% concentrate and was offered at 3% of BW (all on dry matter (DM) basis). The total faecal collection was carried out for 7 consecutive days. At the end of the experimental period, the animals were slaughtered to collect liver and digesta samples from the gastrointestinal tract. Feed, digesta and faecal samples underwent analysis of Fe, Zn, and Cu and total tannins (TT). Goats had significantly higher reticulum Cu concentrations expressed on DM as compared to sheep. Faecal Cu concentrations were higher for goats compared to sheep. Reticulum and colon digesta Zn levels were higher in goats than sheep. Abomasum and colon Fe levels were higher in sheep than goats when expressed on DM. These results suggest differences in feed intake, micromineral absorption, secretion and excretion between sheep and goats, pointing to a divergent mineral metabolism as an adaptation to the challenge of a dry season diet having very low nutritive value.  相似文献

Five sheep (average BW 48 kg) with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulas were fed 63% roughage: 37% concentrate diets (CP = 14.5%) in a 5 x 5 Latin square design to study effects of urea and sodium bicarbonate supplementation on nutrient digestion and ruminal characteristics of defaunated sheep. Diets were fed twice daily (DMI = 1,076 g/d). Defaunation was accomplished with 25-ml doses of alkanate 3SL3/sheep daily for 3 d. Control sheep were faunated (Treatment 1) and fed soybean meal as the major N supplement. Remaining sheep were maintained defaunated and fed either the same diet as Treatment 1 (Treatment 2), Treatment 1 with urea replacing 30% of the soybean meal N (Treatment 3), or Treatment 1 with 2% sodium bicarbonate in the diet (Treatment 4). Treatment 5 was a combination of Treatments 3 and 4. Compared with the faunated control, defaunation decreased (P less than .05) total tract DM, OM, NDF, ADF, and CP digestibilities (71.5 vs 69.4, 73.8 vs 71.7, 64.6 vs 61.4, 58.7 vs 55.8, and 74.2 vs 70.6%, respectively) and average (2 to 12 h postfeeding) ruminal fluid ammonia (23.5 vs 13.7 mg/dl) and isobutyrate (.9 vs .7 mM) concentrations. However, defaunation increased (P less than .05) linoleic and linolenic acid flows (.58 vs .45 g C18:2/d; .17 vs .14 g C18:3/d) to and disappearance (.50 vs .39 g C18:2/d; .14 vs .11 g C18:3/d) from the small intestine. Urea supplementation increased (P less than .05) total tract DM (70.2 vs 68.6%) and OM (72.3 vs 71.0%) digestibilities of defaunated sheep but lowered (P less than .05) ruminal fluid isobutyrate concentration (.6 vs .8 mM). Sodium bicarbonate supplementation increased (P less than .05) ruminal fluid pH (6.4 vs 6.2), isobutyrate concentration (.75 vs .60 mM), total tract ADF digestibility (57.6 vs 54.2%), and ruminal NDF (41.6 vs 28.5%), ADF (36.6 vs 22.8%), and CP (-5.5 vs -26.8%) digestibilities in defaunated sheep. Dietary supplementation of urea or sodium bicarbonate increased nutrient digestion by defaunated sheep.  相似文献

The hydrolysis of ochratoxin A (OA) and the corresponding formation of its hydrolysis product, alpha ochratoxin (O alpha), by ruminal digesta and in the rumen of hay-fed and grain-fed sheep were compared. Ruminal contents from sheep fed diets with hay or with grain hydrolyzed OA in vitro; the majority of the activity was associated with the particulate fraction of the ruminal contents. The rate of hydrolysis of OA by ruminal fluid that was adjusted to different pH values was not influenced (P greater than .6) by the pH of the samples (pH was from 5.5 to 7.0). Ruminal fluid obtained from hay-fed animals (pH 7.0) was able to hydrolyze OA in vitro and to produce the hydrolyzed product, O alpha, at a much greater rate (fivefold) than ruminal fluid obtained from grain-fed animals (pH 5.5) (P less than .01). Ochratoxin A was administered intraruminally at a concentration of .5 mg/kg of BW to hay-fed and grain-fed sheep. The half-lives for disappearance of OA from the rumen of sheep fed grain (normal feed intake, rumen pH 5.7), fed grain at a low level (30% of normal feed intake, pH 6.5), and fed hay (pH 7.1) were 3.6, 1.3, and .6 h, respectively. The results suggest that OA is hydrolyzed much faster in the rumen of sheep fed hay than in sheep fed grain, presumably because of the different ruminal microbial population, which in turn influenced the rate of hydrolysis of OA.  相似文献

Two trials were initiated to determine if slaframine (SF) can be used to alter fluid digesta flow and fermentation patterns in the rumen. In trial 1, a preliminary experiment, four Dorset X Barbados Black-belly ruminal-cannulated wethers (avg weight 41.6 8.7 kg) given ad libitum access to a pelleted concentrate/hay diet were injected intramuscularly with 0, 12, 24 or 48 micrograms SF/kg body weight (BW) in a 4 X 4 Latin-square design. Ruminal fluid dilution rate was determined using a single intraruminal infusion of polyethylene glycol (7 g), followed by seven hourly ruminal fluid samples. The administration of 48 micrograms SF/kg BW increased (P less than .10) ruminal volume and outflow by 27 and 25%, respectively, compared with controls. In trial 2, two Hereford and two Angus ruminal cannulated steers (avg weight 568 +/- 93 kg) were injected with 0, 6, 12 or 24 micrograms SF/kg BW at 8-h intervals over a 24-h period in a 4 X 4 Latin-square design. Steers were fed a concentrate diet at twice maintenance in 24 equal portions daily. Ruminal fluid dilution was measured using a single intraruminal infusion of cobalt-ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (20 g) administered 9 h after the initial SF injection. Two experiments were conducted to determine some of the factors that led to hypomagnesemic tetany associated with the feeding of two orchardgrass hays. Sixteen mature Columbia and Suffolk wethers (62 to 72 kg), four of which were fitted with ruminal and abomasal cannulae, were fed one of two tetany-prone orchardgrass hays or a non-tetany-prone bromegrass hay. In Exp. 1, 12 wethers were used in a completely random design metabolism experiment to measure apparent absorption and retention of macrominerals. In Exp. 2, four wethers with ruminal and abomasal cannulae were used in a completely random design experiment to monitor pre-intestinal mineral absorption and ruminal characteristics. This experiment was replicated once, with wethers remaining on their diets for 16 d in each replication. In the metabolism experiment, apparent absorption and retention of Mg as a percentage of intake were lower (P less than .01 and P less than .05) for one tetany-prone orchardgrass hay compared with the other orchardgrass hay. Pre-intestinal absorption of Mg in the cannulated wethers was greater (P less than .01) for the orchardgrass hays than for the bromegrass hay. Pre-intestinal Mg absorption was higher (P less than .01), both in terms of grams per day and a percentage of intake for the orchardgrass hay with the highest Mg content. In the noncannulated wethers, the percentage of water-soluble Mg in the feces was lower (P less than .01) for the tetany-prone hays, indicating that a decrease in Mg solubility in the intestine may have influenced Mg apparent absorption.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
