An Escherichia coli bacterial prostatitis was experimentally induced in dogs to determine the effect of castration on chronic bacterial prostatitis. Two weeks after instillation of bacteria directly into the prostate gland, 17 of 22 adult mixed-breed male dogs had positive urine or prostatic fluid cultures or both. Seven of the 17 dogs were randomly chosen to be castrated, and 10 of the 17 served as sham-operated controls. At weekly intervals, urine was obtained from 17 dogs for aerobic microbiologic culturing. At each week, dogs with no bacterial growth in the cultured urine had prostatic fluid collected for aerobic microbiologic culture. Dogs with negative urine, prostatic fluid, and prostatic tissue needle biopsy culture results at week 7 were euthanatized. For remaining dogs, weekly cultures were continued until the dogs were euthanatized at week 12. None of the 7 castrated dogs and 6 of the 10 dogs subject to sham operation had prostatic infection at the time of necropsy. The castrated dogs had a mean infection duration of 4.2 weeks, which was statistically shorter than the 9.5-week mean duration of infection in the sham-operated controls. Cultures of prostatic tissue obtained immediately after euthanasia correlated 100% with urine and prostatic fluid cultures taken before euthanasia. All of the 6 dogs with positive prostatic cultures at termination had moderate to marked lymphoplasmacytic chronic prostatitis. The 11 dogs that were not infected at the end of the study had normal to moderate lymphoplasmacytic chronic prostatitis on histologic examination.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare castration of dogs by use of intratesticular injection of zinc gluconate with traditional surgical procedures in terms of acceptance by pet owners, ease of use, and short-term outcomes on Isabela Island of the Galápagos Islands. ANIMALS: 161 privately owned male dogs admitted to a neuter program. PROCEDURES: Medical records of male dogs neutered during a 4-week animal control campaign were reviewed to collect information regarding signalment, method of castration, complication rate, and treatment outcomes. RESULTS: Of the 161 dogs admitted for castration, 58 were surgically castrated and 103 were treated with zinc gluconate. Dogs were returned to their owners for observation following castration. Wound dehiscence occurred in 2 skin incisions, representing 3.4% of the 58 dogs that underwent bilateral orchiectomy. Necrotizing zinc-gluconate injection-site reactions occurred in 4 dogs receiving injection volumes near the maximum label dose (0.8 to 1.0 mL), representing 3.9% of the zinc-gluconate procedures. Surgical wound complications were treated by superficial wound debridement and resuturing, in contrast to zinc-gluconate injection-site reactions, which all required orchiectomy and extensive surgical debridement, including scrotal ablation in 2 dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Low cost, ease of use, and cultural acceptance of a castration technique that does not require removal of the testes make zinc gluconate a valuable option for large-scale use in dogs, particularly in remote locations lacking sophisticated clinical facilities or skilled surgeons and staff. Further investigation is needed to identify risk factors in dogs for adverse reactions to zinc gluconate and to develop strategies for avoidance.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to characterize canine prostate cancer using immunohistochemical staining specific for acinar and urothelial/ductal tissue and correlate these results with the dogs' castration status/castration time. Seventy dogs with prostate cancer were included, 71% were castrated and 29% were intact. Compared with an age‐matched control population, castrated dogs were at increased risk of prostate cancer, odds ratio 3.9. Immunohistochemical staining was performed on 58 cases. Forty‐six of the 58 stained positive for cytokeratin 7 (CK 7) (ductal/urothelial origin) and one of the 58 stained positive for prostate‐specific antigen. Dogs with CK 7‐positive tumours were younger when castrated than dogs with CK 7‐negative tumours, 2 versus 7 years (P = 0.03); dogs castrated at ≤2 years of age were more likely to be CK 7‐positive (P = 0.009). These results show that most canine prostatic carcinomas are of ductal/urothelial, androgen‐independent origin. This is consistent with the epidemiological findings, showing increased risk in castrated dogs. Canine prostate cancer may, therefore, not be a realistic model for the human disease.  相似文献

1. Two studies were conducted to investigate the effect of feeding different concentration and forms of zinc (Zn) on the performance and tibia Zn status of broiler chicks.

2. In Experiment 1, chicks fed on the control or the diet supplemented with 12?mg of Zn as sulphate had lower feed intake, weight gain and tibia Zn content than other treatment groups. Chicks given 12 and 24?mg of organic Zn in starter and grower phases, respectively, had the same performance and tibia Zn content as those fed 40?mg of Zn as sulphate and the same performance but higher tibia Zn content than those given 12?mg of Zn as organic over the 42?d.

3. In Experiment 2, chicks given 24?mg organic Zn had greater weight gain than chicks fed on the other treatment diets in the starter period. Chicks fed on the control diet had lower tibia Zn content than chicks fed other treatment diets. Chicks given 80?mg Zn as sulphate had higher tibia Zn content than chicks fed the other treatment diets except those given 40?mg of Zn as sulphate.

4. The results from these trials indicate that feeding lower concentration of Zn as organic form may better promote the growth performance of broiler chicks.  相似文献

Total acid phosphatase (TAP), prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) and non-prostatic acid phosphatase (NPAP) serum concentrations were determined using a spectrophotometric technique in 52 healthy dogs, 15 male dogs suffering from non-prostatic diseases and in 19 dogs suffering from prostatic diseases (12 dogs with benign prostatic hypertrophy and seven dogs with prostatic adenocarcinoma). TAP, PAP and NPAP serum concentrations did not differ between normal male and normal female dogs. Dogs with prostatic adenocarcinoma had significantly higher TAP, PAP and NPAP serum concentrations than dogs with benign prostatic hypertrophy, normal dogs and dogs with non-prostatic disease. The authors conclude that low serum concentrations of TAP and PAP do not rule out prostatic adenocarcinoma in the dog, but elevated concentrations can be useful criteria for the diagnosis of canine prostatic cancer.  相似文献

This was a retrospective case study of eight dogs diagnosed with prostatic or testicular B. dermatitidis infection. Signalment, clinical presentation, diagnostic procedures, and treatment options were evaluated. Review of medical records of dogs diagnosed with blastomycosis at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital from 1992 to 2005 yielded four dogs with prostatic blastomycosis (PB) and four dogs with testicular blastomycosis (TB). Three of the four dogs with PB and all four dogs with TB had evidence of urogenital disease. Three dogs with PB had an elevated body temperature and all had systemic disease. All dogs with TB had a normal body temperature, and three had systemic disease and one had clinical signs limited to testicular disease. Cytology or histopathology was used to diagnose PB or TB. Treatment included itraconazole or fluconazole with or without nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. PB and TB are infrequently recognized and may be under diagnosed due to failure to specifically evaluate these tissues. PB or TB should be considered in the evaluation and staging of male dogs with blastomycosis. Male dogs with urogenital signs should be evaluated via prostatic or testicular cytology or histopathology since proper identification and management of PB or TB may improve overall treatment success.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate fecal concentrations of selected genera of colonic bacteria in healthy dogs, and to investigate effects of dietary fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on those bacterial populations. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult Beagles. PROCEDURE: Dogs were randomly assigned to 2 groups of 3 and fed an unsupplemented diet for 370 days. After 88 days, fecal samples were collected. Another fecal sample was collected from each dog 282 days later. Group A then received a diet supplemented with FOS, and group B continued to receive the unsupplemented diet. Twenty-eight to 29 days later, fecal samples were collected. Diets were switched between groups, and fecal samples were collected 31 and 87 days later. Concentrations of Bifidobacterium spp, Lactobacillus spp, Clostridium spp, Bacteroides spp, and Escherichia coli in freshly collected feces were determined. Effects of diet and time on bacterial concentrations were compared between groups. RESULTS: Bifidobacterium spp and Lactobacillus spp were inconsistently isolated from feces of dogs fed either diet. Sequence of diet significantly affected number of Bacteroides spp subsequently isolated from feces, but diet had no effect on numbers of Clostridium spp or E coli. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Some genera of bacteria (eg, Bifidobacterium) believed to be common components of colonic microflora may be only sporadically isolated from feces of healthy dogs. This deviation from expected fecal flora may have implications for the effectiveness of supplementing diets with prebiotics.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of IV administration of perzinfotel on the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane in dogs. Animals-6 healthy sexually intact male Beagles. PROCEDURES: Dogs were instrumented with a telemetry device that permitted continuous monitoring of heart rate, arterial blood pressure, and body temperature. Dogs were anesthetized with propofol (4 to 6 mg/kg, IV) and isoflurane for 30 minutes before determination of MAC of isoflurane. Isoflurane MAC values were determined 4 times, separated by a minimum of 7 days, before and after IV administration of perzinfotel (0 [control], 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg). Bispectral index and percentage hemoglobin saturation with oxygen (SpO(2)) were monitored throughout anesthesia. RESULTS: Isoflurane MAC was 1.32 +/- 0.14%. Intravenous administration of perzinfotel at 0, 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg decreased isoflurane MAC by 0%, 24%, 30%, and 47%, respectively. Perzinfotel significantly decreased isoflurane MAC values, compared with baseline and control values. The bispectral index typically increased with higher doses of perzinfotel and lower isoflurane concentrations, but not significantly. Heart rate, body temperature, and SpO(2) did not change, but systolic, mean, and diastolic arterial blood pressures significantly increased with decreases in isoflurane MAC after administration of perzinfotel at 10 and 20 mg/kg, compared with 0 and 5 mg/kg. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: IV administration of perzinfotel decreased isoflurane MAC values. Improved hemodynamics were associated with decreases in isoflurane concentration.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo evaluate the effect of tramadol on sevoflurane minimum alveolar concentration (MACSEVO) in dogs. It was hypothesized that tramadol would dose-dependently decrease MACSEVO.Study designRandomized crossover experimental study.AnimalsSix healthy, adult female mixed-breed dogs (24.2 ± 2.6 kg).MethodsEach dog was studied on two occasions with a 7-day washout period. Anesthesia was induced using sevoflurane delivered via a mask. Baseline MAC (MACB) was determined starting 45 minutes after tracheal intubation. A noxious stimulus (50 V, 50 Hz, 10 ms) was applied subcutaneously over the mid-humeral area. If purposeful movement occurred, the end-tidal sevoflurane was increased by 0.1%; otherwise, it was decreased by 0.1%, and the stimulus was re-applied after a 20-minute equilibration. After MACB determination, dogs randomly received a tramadol loading dose of either 1.5 mg kg?1 followed by a continuous rate infusion (CRI) of 1.3 mg kg?1 hour?1 (T1) or 3 mg kg?1 followed by a 2.6 mg kg?1 hour?1 CRI (T2). Post-treatment MAC determination (MACT) began 45 minutes after starting the CRI. Data were analyzed using a mixed model anova to determine the effect of treatment on percentage change in baseline MACSEVO (p < 0.05).ResultsThe MACB values were 1.80 ± 0.3 and 1.75 ± 0.2 for T1 and T2, respectively, and did not differ significantly. MACT decreased by 26 ± 8% for T1 and 36 ± 12% for T2. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the decrease between the two treatments. Conclusion and clinical relevanceTramadol significantly reduced MACSEVO but this was not dose dependent at the doses studied.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of methadone on the minimum alveolar concentration of isoflurane (ISOMAC) in dogs.Study designProspective, randomized cross-over experimental study.AnimalsSix adult mongrel dogs, four males and two females, weighing 22.8 ± 6.6 kg.MethodsAnimals were anesthetized with isoflurane and mechanically ventilated on three separate days, at least 1 week apart. Core temperature was maintained between 37.5 and 38.5 °C during ISOMAC determinations. On each study day, ISOMAC was determined using electrical stimulation of the antebrachium (50 V, 50 Hz, 10 mseconds) at 2.5 and 5 hours after intravenous injection of physiological saline (control) or one of two doses of methadone (0.5 or 1.0 mg kg?1).ResultsMean (±SD) ISOMAC in the control treatment was 1.19 ± 0.15% and 1.18 ± 0.15% at 2.5 and 5 hours, respectively. The 1.0 mg kg?1 dose of methadone reduced ISOMAC by 48% (2.5 hours) and by 30% (5 hours), whereas the 0.5 mg kg?1 dose caused smaller reductions in ISOMAC (35% and 15% reductions at 2.5 and 5 hours, respectively). Both doses of methadone decreased heart rate (HR), but the 1.0 mg kg?1 dose was associated with greater negative chronotropic actions (HR 37% lower than control) and mild metabolic acidosis at 2.5 hours. Mean arterial pressure increased in the MET1.0 treatment (13% higher than control) at 2.5 hours. Conclusions and clinical relevanceMethadone reduces ISOMAC in a dose-related fashion and this effect is lessened over time. Although the isoflurane sparing effect of the 0.5 mg kg?1 dose of methadone was smaller in comparison to the 1.0 mg kg?1 dose, the lower dose is recommended for clinical use because it results in less evidence of cardiovascular impairment.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of butorphanol and carprofen, alone and in combination, on the minimal alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane in dogs. DESIGN: Randomized complete-block crossover study. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult dogs. PROCEDURE: Minimal alveolar concentration of isoflurane was determined following administration of carprofen alone, butorphanol alone, carprofen and butorphanol, and neither drug (control). Anesthesia was induced with isoflurane in oxygen, and MAC was determined by use of a tail clamp method. Three hours prior to induction of anesthesia, dogs were fed a small amount of canned food without any drugs (control) or with carprofen (2.2 mg/kg of body weight [1 mg/lb]). Following initial determination of MAC, butorphanol (0.4 mg/kg [0.18 mg/lb], i.v.) was administered, and MAC was determined again. Heart rate, respiratory rate, indirect arterial blood pressure, endtidal partial pressure of CO2, and saturation of hemoglobin with oxygen were recorded at the time MAC was determined. RESULTS: Mean +/- SD MAC of isoflurane following administration of butorphanol alone (1.03 +/- 0.22%) or carprofen and butorphanol (0.90 +/- 0.21%) were significantly less than the control MAC (1.28 +/- 0.14%), but MAC after administration of carprofen alone (1.20 +/- 0.13%) was not significantly different from the control value. The effects of carprofen and butorphanol on the MAC of isoflurane were additive. There were not any significant differences among treatments in regard to cardiorespiratory data. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that administration of butorphanol alone or in combination with carprofen significantly reduces the MAC of isoflurane in dogs; however, the effects of butorphanol and carprofen are additive, not synergistic.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To quantify the change in the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane (ISO) associated with oxymorphone (OXY) or hydromorphone (HYDRO) in dogs. DESIGN: Randomized crossover study with at least 1 week between assessments. ANIMALS: Six young, healthy, mixed-breed dogs (1-3 years old), weighing 24.7 +/- 4.70 kg. METHODS: Following mask induction, anesthesia was maintained with ISO in 100% O(2) using mechanical ventilation. The dogs received 0.05 mg kg(-1) OXY, 0.1 mg kg(-1) HYDRO, or 1 mL saline (control) IV. Following equilibration (15 minutes) at each percentage ISO tested, a supramaximal electrical stimulus was applied to the toe web and the response was assessed. Two separate MAC determinations were carried out during 4.5 hours of anesthesia, with completion of the evaluations at 1.5-2 and 4-4.5 hours after drug administration. A two-factor anova was used to determine whether there was a time or treatment effect on MAC and a Tukey test compared the drug effects at each time. Significance is reported at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The mean MAC values (+/-SD) were 1.2 +/- 0.18 and 1.2 +/- 0.16% for control, 0.7 +/-0.15 and 1.0 +/- 0.15% for OXY, and 0.6 +/- 0.14 and 0.8 +/- 0.17% for HYDRO. The initial MAC with OXY and the MAC determined at both times with HYDRO were significantly different from the control MAC values. CONCLUSIONS: Both OXY and HYDRO significantly reduced the MAC of ISO in dogs at 2 hours. At approximately 4.5 hours, HYDRO had a significant MAC-sparing effect, whereas OXY did not. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although both OXY and HYDRO resulted in a significant reduction in the MAC of ISO at approximately 2 hours, HYDRO may be preferred for procedures of long duration and rarely needs repeated dosing before 4.5 hours.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of adenosine infusion on the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized crossover study. ANIMALS: Seven adult male and female Beagles weighing 10.9 (7.5, 13.6) kg [median (minimum, maximum)]. METHODS: Each dog was anesthetized with isoflurane in oxygen and randomly assigned to receive either an intravenous (IV) adenosine (0.3 mg kg(-1) minute(-1)) or saline (6 mL kg(-1) hour(-1) IV) infusion. After an interval of 7 days or more, each dog was re-anesthetized and treated with the alternative infusion. Using a tail-clamp technique, MAC was determined before (pre-infusion), during (infusion), and 2 hours after the infusions (post-infusion). RESULTS: The pre-infusion MAC of isoflurane was 1.25 (1.15, 1.35) [median (minimum, maximum)] vol.% for the saline treatment group and 1.25 (1.05, 1.45) vol.% for the adenosine treatment group, and did not differ significantly between the two treatments. The infusion MAC values were not significantly different (p = 0.16) and were 1.25 (0.95, 1.35) vol.% and 1.05 (1.00, 1.25) vol.%, respectively. The post-infusion MAC values differed significantly (p = 0.016); MAC was 1.15 (1.15, 1.35) vol.% and 1.05 (1.05, 1.25) vol.% for the saline and adenosine treatment groups, respectively. During infusion, mean arterial blood pressure decreased significantly (p = 0.008) during adenosine treatment compared with the saline 66 mmHg (52, 72) and 91 mmHg (68, 110), respectively. End-tidal CO2 (Pe'CO2), urine production, hematocrit, and plasma total solids did not differ significantly between the two treatments at any time (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although the MAC of isoflurane in dogs was not decreased significantly during infusion with adenosine (0.3 mg kg(-1) minute(-1)), it was significantly decreased post-infusion, but only by 0.1 vol.%, an amount not considered clinically important. Adenosine infusion decreased mean arterial pressure by 27% and did not adversely affect renal function.  相似文献

Several peripheral blood microfilaria concentration methods that use Acetone (Acetone test), 2% formalin (modified Knott method), 5% Tween 20 solution, distilled water, 1% or 0.1% SDS were compared for their efficacy in detecting Setaria digitata microfilaria in cattle. The Acetone test was found to be more efficacious than the modified Knott method or the 5% Tween 20 solution test for detecting the S. digitata microfilaria in bovine blood. However, besides the Acetone test, the modified Knott method was also found to be suitable for Dirofilaria immitis microfilaria detection in dogs. SDS and distilled water were found not to be effective as hemolytic agent for the disruption of the red blood cell of both the cattle and dogs. Thus, the Acetone test is recommended for the primary screening of microfilaremia of S. digitata in cattle.  相似文献

Young male New Zealand White rabbits given a diet containing 2 ppm of Zn (Zn-deficient diet) ceased to grow after 5 wk. Control rabbits given diets containing 80 or 85 of ppm Zn and experimental animals given 7 ppm of Zn (low-Zn diet) grew normally. The rabbits given the Zn-deficient diet also exhibited alopecia, skin lesions, and frequent pasteurella infections. These conditions were not observed in rabbits fed the other diets. The testes and thymus were smaller in the rabbits fed the Zn-deficient diet than in rabbits fed the control diet. Serum Zn concentrations in rabbits given the low- or Zn-deficient diets reached new lower levels after 2 wk, and these concentrations were maintained for up to 12 wk. The serum Zn concentration was, however, lower in the rabbits fed the Zn-deficient diet (approximately .35 micrograms/ml compared with .8 micrograms/ml for rabbits fed the low-Zn diet and 1.4 micrograms/ml for rabbits fed the control diet). Tissue Zn concentrations generally declined in rabbits fed the low- and Zn-deficient diets, but this response depended on the particular tissue and diet. Zinc levels in bone decreased by approximately 45% and in fur by 20 to 30% on either low-Zn or Zn-deficient treatments. With a Zn-deficient diet, Zn in liver and testes decreased by 20%, Zn in skin by 35%, and Zn in brain by 10%. The Zn concentration in the skeletal muscle and thymus was, however, maintained. In the eye, Zn concentration in the aqueous humor declined by approximately 20% in rabbits fed the Zn-deficient diet.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
