Studies on fascioliasis in four selected sites in Ethiopia

The incidence of fascioliasis was studied in Asela, Awasa, Debre Zeit and Debre Berhan by using 153 experimental sheep divided up into 4 groups designated tracer sheep, Controls I, II and III. Fasciola hepatica was encountered in Debre Berhan, Asela and Awasa, but it was not detected at Debre Zeit. In all areas, it was most frequently recovered after heavy rains. Altitude, soil type, salt content and local crowding of animals in watering sites appear to have influenced the varying degrees of incidence and intensity of infection.

Gene transfer in laboratory animals

Describing purpose and method of genetransfer by pronuclear microinjection comprehensively application on laboratory animals are reviewed. Experiments on the production of rabbits and mice transgenic for several uteroglobin-hybrid-genes (B2B3UG CAT; H/B/72/CAT; UG TAg; UG 11.8) were performed and resulted in four rabbit fetuses and one stillborne rabbit transgenic for UG TAg and one mouse transgenic for UG 11.8. These experiments are part of investigations on uteroglobin as a model of geneexpression regulated by steroid hormones.     

Anesthesia and surgery of laboratory animals

This article reviews anesthetics and anesthetic techniques applicable to small laboratory animals. Anesthetic and analgesic dosage tables are presented for each species to guide the practitioner. The actions of the various agents are reviewed in the text, and key references are presented. Surgical considerations are also reviewed.
