The objectives of this experiment were to study the effects of different grazing managements in spring on herbage intake and performance of summer-calving dairy cows and to examine the effects of regrowth in early June on herbage intake and cow performance. Four spring-grazing treatments were applied to predominantly perennial ryegrass swards: Control (C), sward grazed by cows to 6–8 cm sward surface height (SSH); CG16, sward grazed by cows to 3–4 cm SSH in May and allowed to regrow to a target SSH of 16cm in early June; CG8, sward grazed by cows to 3–4 cm SSH in May and allowed to regrow to 8cm in early June; and SG8, sward grazed by sheep to 2–3 cm SSH in May and allowed to regrow to 8 cm in early June, All swards were continuously stocked by summer-calving (May and July) primiparous and multiparous cows from 16 June to 7 September, to a target SSH of 8–10cm. Spring treatments bad marked effects on herbage intakes and milk production. Estimated in July by n alkane analysis, the mean herbage intake ± s.e.d. of cows on each treatment were 1·8, 1·4, 1·4 and 3·0 ± 0·31 kg dry matter (DM) 100 kg live weight (LW)?1 d?1 (P < 0·01) for treatments C, CG16, CG8 and SG8 respectively. Measured in August, intakes were 1·8, 20, 2·1 and 2·4 ± O·33kg DM 100kg LW?1 d?1 respectively. Severe spring grazing led to increased milk yield and reduced milk fat content from summer-calving cows fed 5·2 kg d?1 of a proprietary concentrate. Average milk yields for the eleven experimental cows on each treatment were 24·3, 23·4, 26·2 and 29·0 ± 1·20 kgd?1 (P < 0·01) for C, CG16, CG8 and SG8, and average milk fat contents were 45·4. 42·4, 43·9 and 40·9 ± 1·02gkg?1 (P<0·05) respectively. The results suggest that severe grazing of swards in early season could improve herbage intake and milk yield of summer-calving cows in mid- and late season. The most favourable spring treatment in this respect was severe grazing by sheep. However, this advantage could be negated in midseason by lax grazing at that time.  相似文献

For the 2 years 1977 and 1978 Masham ewes grazed a perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne cv. S24) pasture from the beginning of April until the end of September each year. Twelve ewes were allocated to each of the three stocking rate treatments, 12 (L), 16 (M) and 20 (H) ewes per ha. Each treatment was rotationally grazed around six paddocks with a forward creep for the lambs. Conservation cuts were taken from each treatment in late May and were generally sufficient to cover a 3-month winter feeding period for treatments L and M but were always insufficient for treatment H. Lambing took place at pasture during the second half of May. No concentrates were fed to the ewes during late pregnancy or lactation but lamb birth weights (4–8 kg) and lamb growth rates over the first 4 weeks (240 g d−l) were satisfactory. Organic matter intakes (OMI)of grass by the pregnant ewes(1816,1844 g OMI ewe−1) were not affected by the stocking rate. Intake of grass by the lactating ewes was affected by year and by stocking rate. The overall growth rate of lambs was higher on treatment L than either M or H but decreased on all treatments during the latter half of the grazing season, resulting in 43% of L and only 3% of M and H lambs being fit for slaughter by the end of September. The main features of this time of lambing are low costs and the production of predominantly store lambs.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the spring growth of perennial ryegrass swards was studied at three contrasting sites. Two of these were situated on land restored after opencast coal mining, one of which had been drained. The third was on undisturbed land of the same soil type. Rates of leaf extension were measured in an attempt to give an early indication of differences in plant growth in the spring of 1982.
Spring growth started earliest on undisturbed land. On the restored land drainage proved beneficial, for although the onset of growth was delayed compared to the undisturbed site the subsequent rates of growth were similar. Both the onset and the rate of growth were slower on the undrained site. Highly significant relationships existed between leaf extension rate and soil temperature at each site. However, when sites were compared, differences in soil temperature could only partly explain observed differences in growth rate between sites.
It was concluded that some factor other than soil temperature was responsible for the difference in spring growth between the undisturbed site and the undrained opencast site in this experiment.  相似文献

The effect of the proportion of Calluna vulgaris cover on diet composition, intake and performance of sheep grazing hill vegetation communities in northern Spain is examined. A total of 591 non‐lactating Gallega ewes grazed for five consecutive grazing seasons (June to September) on replicated plots of hill pastures (1700 m.a.s.l.) composed principally of Festuca, Agrostis, Nardus and Calluna spp. but with different proportions of Calluna vulgaris cover, either 0·3 (C0·3) or 0·7 (C0·7) of the total area. In 1 year, twenty‐eight ewes suckling single lambs also grazed the plots. The mean stocking density over the 5 years was 8·7 ewes ha–1. On treatment C0·3, daily liveweight gains (33 g d–1) of non‐lactating ewes were significantly (P < 0·001) greater than on treatment C0·7 (12 g d–1). Likewise in lactating ewes the difference in mean daily liveweight change was 40 g d–1 (–5 vs. –45 g d–1 for C0·3 and C0·7 treatments respectively; P < 0·001). Liveweight gains of lambs were only 80–100 g d–1 from June to August and lambs only maintained live weight during August and September. The effect of lactational status on liveweight changes was not significant. Liveweight gains of non‐lactating ewes increased significantly (P < 0·001) from the first to the last year of the experiment on both treatments. The composition of the diet was significantly affected by treatment (P < 0·001), with a higher proportion of grass species on the C0·3 treatment and a higher digestibility of the diet in the first half of the grazing season (P < 0·001). The proportion of C. vulgaris in the diet was significantly (P < 0·001) higher on the C0·7 treatment and increased significantly (P < 0·001) from July to September on both treatments. There were no significant differences in the composition of the diet selected by lactating and non‐lactating ewes. The results demonstrate that on hill vegetation communities, in which the grass components (Festuca rubra, Agrostis capillaris, and Nardus stricta) cover at least 0·3 of the area and on which the preferred grass component (Festuca and Agrostis spp.) is maintained at a sward height of at least 2·5 cm, non‐lactating ewes can increase their live weight and body condition, but this increase is influenced by the proportion and quantity of species of grass in the diet, which is affected in turn by the species of grass available and their nutritive quality. However, ewes suckling lambs were not able to maintain their live weight and body condition except when Calluna cover was 0·3 and grass height was more than 3·5 cm. It is concluded that these indigenous vegetation communities can be used in sheep production systems to complement the use of improved pastures at other times of year. In particular, they can be utilized during the non‐lactating period (summer) to increase body condition before the beginning of the mating period in autumn.  相似文献

Plots of five intermediate‐heading varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) [AberDove, Belramo and Glen (diploid); Twins (tetraploid); and AberExcel (tetraploid hybrid)] were continuously stocked with sheep to maintain a target sward surface height of 40–50 mm. Daily dry matter (DM) intake was significantly different (F‐value = 0·032) between the varieties, with the tetraploid hybrid AberExcel having the highest values for daily DM intake and intake rate during eating. Amongst the diploid varieties, intake rate tended to be higher for sheep grazing Glen. The varieties comprised a wide range in potential growth habit, from the relatively prostrate, highly tillered Glen to the more‐erect AberExcel and there were differences between them in the vertical distribution of leaves within the sward canopy. The leaves of AberExcel weighed 3·6 mg DM cm?2 leaf area in contrast to the other varieties (4·3–5·3 mg DM cm?2 leaf area) resulting in a high leaf area index (LAI) in relation to the green leaf mass. Intake rate was not significantly correlated with extended tiller and sheath tube lengths, partition of herbage mass, number of tillers per square metre or LAI. However, canonical variates analysis showed that there were significant differences between the varieties for the morphological and chemical factors examined. Other factors also need to be explored to explain these differences in ingestive behaviour in order to identify plant traits that are correlated with herbage intake rate. These are needed for varieties destined for grazing use, both during the breeding programme and their subsequent evaluation.  相似文献

Over a 24-week period, three groups of dairy cows were continuously stocked at 8, 10 or 12 cows ha-1 between morning and afternoon milkings, and overnight were housed and offered grass silage ad libitum. Due to a prolonged drought, sward heights only averaged 4·1 cm.
The increase in daytime stocking rate led to a decline in herbage intake, and increases in silage intake. At the highest stocking rate (12 cows ha-1), the silage intake failed to compensate for the reduced herbage intake. Consequently the total dry matter and estimated metabolizable energy intakes were lower than for the 8 and 10 cows ha-1 treatments. Milk yields and milk composition were not significantly affected by treatment but the 12 cows ha-1 stocking rate gave the lowest milk and milk solids yields.
The utilized metabolizable energy (UME) on the grazed swards was greatest for the 10 cows ha-1 treatment. The sward cut to provide the silage had a UME level (GJ ha-1) 32% greater on average than the grazed swards during the same growth period. The total areas utilized for grazing and silage production for 8, 10 and 12 cows ha-1 were 0·240, 0·224 and 0·215 ha respectively. Fat and protein yields per unit area were greatest for the 10 cows ha-1 group.  相似文献

Four groups of ewes grazed swards of red clover (Trifolium pratense cv. Hungaropoly) for 28-day periods ending 28, 14 or 0 (two groups) days before mating. One of the groups on red clover for the period immediately before mating continued on red clover during mating. At all other times before mating and for 7–8 weeks after mating commenced these ewes were grazed on a predominantly perennial ryegrass-white clover sward. A fifth (control) group was on the ryegrass sward throughout. There was no apparent adverse effect of red clover on ovulation rate, conception rate or embryo mortality.  相似文献

The insecticide dimethoate was applied to a sward of S23 perennial ryegrass over a period of 2 years at three dose rates and at five frequencies of application. The dry matter and crude protein production of the perennial ryegrass varieties S24, S23, Premo, Houba, Barlenna, Melle and Sceempter Pasture at annual nitrogen application rates of 212, 425, 637 and 1062 kg ha?1 were studied for the years 1972–74 inclusive. The DM and CP response curves for the variety Melle were steeper than those for other varieties tested and levelled off at a higher N application rate. The results suggest that Melle is a variety with a genotype capahle of utilizing N more efficiently at higher rates than the other varieties tested.  相似文献

The distribution of length, diameter, surface area and volume of roots was measured in northern New South Wales, Australia, under temperate pasture that had been previously grazed at low and high stocking rates for 30 years; these root characteristics were compared with those of roots under ungrazed pasture. The ungrazed pasture was dominated by Phalaris (Phalaris Aquatica), whereas annual grasses and dicotyledons were a large component of the pasture at low and high stocking rates. A fine-meshed (0.250 mm) sieve was used for separating the roots from the soil, and the root characteristics were measured using image analysis techniques. With this sieve size, root length densities were many times higher than published data for astures where a larger mesh sieve had been used for sample preparation. The lengths of root per unit of soil volume (root length densities) were high for all stocking rates and averaged 91 cm cm?3 near the soil surface (0 – 5 cm) declining to 4.0 cm cm?3 at the deepest depth measured (65–75 cm). There was a greater proportion of roots near the soil surface at the higher stocking rates. A greater proportion of fine roots occurred at the higher stocking rates, which was probably due to the differences in botanical composition. Reciprocal, power and logarithmic functions best described the distribution of root length density, root surface area density and root volume density, root surface area density and root volume desnity with depth.  相似文献

The effects of severity of grazing on the herbage intake and milk production of continuously stocked British Friesian cows calving in February–March were examined in three experiments conducted in the years 1976–78 (experiments 1–3 respectively) using a put-and-take technique. In experiment 1 four grazing severities were imposed by maintaining swards with different herbage masses (2500, 3000, 3500, 4000 kg OM ha-1); in experiments 2 and 3 there were two severities of grazing maintained by keeping swards canopies at constant heights of 5 and 7 cm (experiment 2) and 5 and 7·2 cm (experiment 3). Cows were reallocated to treatment every 8 weeks in experiments 1 and 2 and there were three periods, whereas they all grazed throughout a 23-week period on the same treatment in the final trial.
A decrease in the quantity of herbage on offer or in sward height reduced herbage intake and milk production in all experiments. Mean daily herbage OM intakes were 11·2, 12·2, 12·2 and 12·2 kg respectively in experiment 1, 12·2 and 13·2 kg respectively in experiment 2 and 12·2 and 152 kg respectively in experiment 3. Mean daily solids–corrected milk yields were 14·2, 15·2, 15·2 and 16·2 kg respectively in experiment 1, 14·2 and 16·2 kg respectively in experiment 2 and 12·2 and 17·2 kg respectively in experiment 3. It was apparent from the data obtained in the first two trials that grazing at a sward canopy height of 7 rather than 9 cm had little effect, but that at 5 cm there were significant depressions in both herbage intake and milk production. Milk yield was depressed to a greater extent when cows were kept on the same treatment for the whole season.  相似文献

The combined benefits of a high crude protein concentration, and possible protein protection and growth‐promoting properties, make forage legumes potentially attractive as a natural means of increasing liveweight gain and time to slaughter of lambs in lamb finishing systems. An experiment was conducted to compare the production performance and meat quality of grazing lambs finished on red clover (Trifolium pratense), lucerne (Medicago sativa) or perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) swards. Replicate (n = 2) swards of red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass were rotationally grazed by ten ram lambs and ten ewe lambs from weaning until selection for slaughter at UK fat class 3L. Lambs grazing the red clover sward had a significantly higher liveweight gain and required significantly fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the lucerne sward (305 g d?1 vs. 243 g d?1; 38 d vs. 50 d), which in turn had a higher liveweight gain and required fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (184 g d?1; 66 d). Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards had significantly higher herbage intakes than those grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (2·06, 1·72 and 1·16 kg DM d?1 respectively), but in vivo digestibility of herbage was similar. Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards also had significantly higher serum urea concentrations than those grazing ryegrass (12·5, 11·1 and 6·2 mmol L?1 respectively). Killing‐out percentage was significantly higher for lambs grazing the red clover sward than for lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (48% vs. 46%). There were no significant effects of finishing system on meat flavour, but meat from lambs finished on the lucerne sward was oxidatively less stable than that from lambs finished on the perennial ryegrass sward. Grazing the forage legume swards significantly increased the proportion of linoleic and linolenic acid in muscle tissue, and therefore the proportion of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids (0·19, 0·16 and 0·12 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). However, the n?6/n?3 ratio was significantly lower for the muscle of lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward compared with those grazing the forage legume swards (1·13, 1·08 and 0·98 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). The results indicate that by grazing lambs on forage legume swards it is possible to increase individual lamb performance without compromising meat quality.  相似文献

Abstract Four sward height treatments were imposed by continuous variable stocking using at least ten Suffolk × Greyface lambs per plot from late July to late August: constant 3·5 cm. constant 6·0 cm. 3·5cm increasing to 6·0 cm and 6·0 cm decreasing to 3·5 cm. The treatments were established on two swards given fertilizer N applications over the season of 97 and 160 kg N ha?1 respectively. Animal density was greater on the high fertilizer treatment, at the lower sward height and especially on the decreasing height treatments. Liveweight change of lambs was higher (P <0·001) on the 6-cm than on the 3·5-cm treatments (+159 vs-13g d?1 and was also higher (P <0·001) on the increasing than on the decreasing sward height treatments (+92 vs-26 g d?1). Herbage organic matter intake (OMI), measured on two occasions in the experiment, was greater (P <0·001) on the 6·0 cm than on the 3·5-cm sward heights whereas values for the increasing sward height treatments were much greater than those for the decreasing sward height treatments. There was little difference in the organic matter digestibility of the diet between treatments. Diets were composed largely of lamina, although there was more pseudostem and dead herbage in the diets of Iambs grazing the decreasing than the increasing sward height treatments at the end of the experiment. Bite mass was closely related to OMI but the treatment and period differences were relatively greater than for OMI. Bite mass was more closely related to the depth of the lamina layer (sward height-pseudostem height) than it was to sward height. There was evidence that pseudostem acted as a barrier to defoliation on these short swards and also that the proportion of youngest leaf in the diet was positively related to sward height and to increases in sward height. Sward height and especially the direction of change in sward height, together with associated stock density, were potent influences on lamb growth rate. This was a consequence of differences in herbage intake, which was strongly influenced by bite mass.  相似文献

The effect of herbage allowance on the herbage intake and performance of ewes and their twin lambs at pasture was investigated. Daily herbage allowances of 40,80.120 and 160 g organic matter (OM) kg-1 ewe live weight, based on herbage mass measured to ground level, were offered during the first 12 weeks of lactation.
The sheep were grazed rotationally around four paddocks of a perennial ryegrass pasture for 7-day periods and herbage mass, extended tiller length and digestibility of the herbage consumed by the animals were estimated. Herbage intake by the ewes was estimated during weeks two to twelve and live weights were recorded weekly: during the last two weeks of the experiment grazing behaviour of one ewe on each treatment was recorded continuously.
Herbage intakes by the ewes (164, 1–81, 2–42 and 268 ± 0153 kg d-1) and live weight gains of the lambs (202, 245, 274 and 300 ± 7–3 g d-1) increased with increasing herbage allowances. Herbage intakes by the ewes and growth rates of their lambs increased up to a herbage allowance which was over five times the amount of herbage eaten by the ewes.
As the animals reduced herbage mass and sward height, biting rates by the ewes during grazing increased by 4 (± 0·08) bites min-1 cm-1 and masticating rates decreased. Mastications reached a maximum of 90 (± 3·5) min-1 at a sward surface height of 9 cm.  相似文献

Masham ewes were stocked at 12(L), 16(M) or 20 (H) ewes ha−1, with 1·8 lambs per ewe on average, on two blocks (A and B) in both 1976 and 1977. Silage was offered at pasture to the ewes in early lactation and as stocking rate increased from 12 to 16 and then 20 ewes ha−1, 47, 73 and 100 kg DM per ewe was consumed respectively. Silage was cut mainly in the autumn and 179, 100 and 9 kg per ewe was made for L, M and H respectively. More variation between treatments was measured in net herbage accumulation in summer than spring and 11·4, 10·0 and 9·7t DM ha −1 was grown over the whole season for L, M and H respectively as a mean of both years.
High intakes of herbage OM were measured with values up to 40 g per kg live weight for BL lambs in 1976. Rapid lamb growth was achieved. There were effects of stocking rate on lamb performance and for L, M and H the respective growth rates to 4 weeks were 266, 248 and 247 g d−1; growth rates to sale were 274, 263 and 252 g d−1; days to sale were 124, 126 and 129; mean carcass weights were 17·7, 17·1 and 16·7 kg. Most ewes lost weight in early lactation, especially AH and BH in 1976, but there were no stocking rate effects on ewe weight change in 1977.  相似文献

An early-heading variety of perennial ryegrass (Ramore) bred for high magnesium (Mg) content was compared with an early control variety (Frances) for its ability to increase Mg intake, Mg utilization and blood Mg concentration in sheep, and so reduce the incidence of hypomagnesaemic tetany. Swards of the two varieties were established and each was grazed by ewes suckling twin lambs from turn-out to weaning and thereafter by dry ewes. In early and late season herbage from a proportion of each sward was cut daily and fed fresh to ewes housed indoors in metabolism crates. Under grazing conditions herbage from Ramore swards had, over the 1992 and 1993 grazing seasons, a higher Mg concentration than Frances (2.35 g kg?1 vs. 2.18 g kg?1; s.e.m. 0.019, P< 0.001). During the spring period there was a higher (P 0.001, s.e.m. 0.0074) Mg concentration in the blood of ewes grazing Ramore (0.854 m mol 1?l) swards compared with those grazing Frances (0.793 m mol 1 ?1) whereas during the autumn period blood Mg concentrations were higher in ewes grazing Frances. Ewe and lamb liveweight gains, recorded in 1992 only, were higher on Ramore swards than on Frances swards, although the difference was not significant. Indoor feeding studies showed that Mg intake was significantly higher (P< 0.001, s.e.m. 0.026) in ewes offered Ramore (1.98 g d?1) herbage compared with those offered Frances (1.74 g d?1) herbage with no significant difference in dry-matter intake between the two varieties. Apparent availability and retention of Mg were higher for animals fed Ramore during the spring feeding periods than those fed Frances, but during the autumn feeding periods the reverse was true. Under indoor feeding conditions, variety had no significant effect on blood Mg concentrations. It was concluded that under grazing conditions a high Mg variety could provide an effective means of reducing the incidence of hypomagnesaemic tetany.  相似文献

The objective of this study, which was part of a larger grazing‐systems experiment, was to investigate the cumulative impact of three levels of grazing intensity on sward production, utilization and structural characteristics. Pastures were grazed by rotational stocking with Holstein–Friesian dairy cows from 10 February to 18 November 2009. Target post‐grazing heights were 4·5 to 5 cm (high; H), 4 to 4·5 cm (intermediate; I) and 3·5 to 4 cm (low; L). Detailed sward measurement were undertaken on 0·08 of each farmlet area. There were no significant treatment differences in herbage accumulated or in herbage harvested [mean 11·3 and 11·2 t dry matter (DM) ha?1 respectively]. Above the 3·5 cm horizon, H, I and L swards had 0·56, 0·62 and 0·67 of DM as leaf and 0·30, 0·23 and 0·21 of DM as stem respectively. As grazing severity increased, tiller density of grass species other than perennial ryegrass (PRG) decreased (from 3,350 to 2,780 and to 1771 tillers m?2 for H, I and L paddocks respectively) and the rejected area decreased (from 0·27 to 0·20 and to 0·10 for H, I and L paddocks respectively). These results indicate the importance of grazing management practice on sward structure and quality and endorse the concept of increased grazing severity as a strategy to maintain high‐quality grass throughout the grazing season. The findings are presented in the context of the need for intensive dairy production systems to provide greater quantities of high‐quality pasture over an extended grazing season, in response to policy changes with the abolition of EU milk quotas.  相似文献

An experiment was designed to examine the changes in clover content of three mixed perennial ryegrass/white cover swards of differing initial clover contents subjected to different grazing height management regimes and their effect on lactation performance of 48 Friesian dairy cows and heifers. Two paddocks were established for each treatment and grazed on alternate days. Treatments T17 and Tl3 consisted of swards with initial clover contents of 0·17 and 0·13 of the dry matter (DM) mass, respectively, grazed to maintain compressed sward heights of 6 cm throughout the season. A third treatment, SI5, consisted of a sward with an initial clover content of 0·15 grazed to maintain a compressed sward height of 4·5 cm for the first 78 days of the grazing season (period 1). Throughout period 1, half the animals on each treatment each received 4 kg of a concentrate supplement daily, while the others remained unsupplemented. From days 79 to 90, the cattle on treatment S15 grazed a similar sward, while the compressed sward height of the S15 paddocks was allowed to increase to 6 cm before re introduction of the animals. The three swards were then grazed for a further 47 days (period 2) before the animals were housed and milk yield recorded for a further 63 days (period 3). While sward T17 showed little change in clover content over the first 29 days of grazing, remaining at just below 0·18 of DM mass, swards T13 and S15 showed a marked decline in clover content to 0·05 and 0·07 of DM mass respectively. However, by the end of period 1 the clover content of all three swards had increased markedly (0·25, 0·15 and 0·15 of DM mass respectively). By the end of period 2, clover proportions were slightly higher than initial values (0·19. 0·15 and 0·15 of DM mass for treatments T17, T13 and S15, respectively). Owing to the relatively small differences in clover content of swards TI7 and T13, there were no significant effects of these two treatments on milk yield or composition in any period. Supplementation had no effect on milk composition and had little effect on milk yield, except when sward height was maintained at 4·5 cm. There was no carryover effect of supplementation on milk yield or composition in periods 2 or 3.  相似文献

A ryegrass-white clover sward was grazed by Welsh Mountain ewes with single lambs at a stocking rate of nineteen ewes per ha from April until October. Rotational grazing was practised and the treatments compared were rest periods of 3, 4 or 5 weeks. The percentage of ground covered by clover was estimated visually and quadrats were also cut to ground level to estimate the amount of clover dry matter present. A good correlation was obtained between these two estimates. Although the sward contained about 20% clover on visual assessment, the dry matter contribution was small. The amount of clover increased slightly over the season on all treatments, but the different rest periods of 21, 28 and 35 d made no significant difference to the amount of clover present. The growth rate of the lambs was also not significantly different between treatments.  相似文献
