- 1.In attempts to intercross Lolium perenne and L. multiflorum with Festuca pratensis in a glasshouse, 13,284 emasculated flowers of diploid, triploid and tetraploid Lolium plants were provided with pollen of diploid and tetraploid Festuca plants. Only the combinations 2n\sx4n and 3n\sx4n produced hybrids, viz. on average 5.3 and 1.0 mature hybrid plants per 100 pollinated flowers. In crosses performed in winter these averages were 12.0 and 4.9 respectively. 相似文献

Summary The drought resistance of 25 accessions of meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.) from seven countries was investigated in four experiments: two in the glasshouse using pot-grown plants from which water was withheld for various periods, and two in controlled environments under osmotic stress.There were significant differences between populations (broad-sense heritabilities or repeatabilities) in all four experiments. In the glasshouse there was a large residual effect of yield potential on production during and after slight-to-moderate drought, and different susceptibilities appeared only after very severe drought. The most consistently high-yielding accessions were from the Bergamo alps in Italy. Recovery after drought was strongly correlated with tiller survival. Continued production under moderate drought was considered important in wetter climates, whereas survival and recovery under severe drought was often associated with low production or flowering in the seeding year, and more typical of summer-drought climates.Leaf growth rates of plants subjected to zero or moderate osmotic stress were correlated with yields of irrigated or moderately-stressed plants in the glasshouse, although there was no differential susceptibility to mild stress. Under severe osmotic stress there were very large differences in survival between populations, but there was no relationship with survival under glasshouse conditions.The inconsistency of population rankings across experiments shows that no one technique gives a full evaluation of drought resistance, and emphasizes the complex nature of the phenomenon. It was possible, however, to identify (a) regions meriting further collections, and (b) ecotypes that had desirable responses in all experiments and could contribute to variety improvement. 相似文献

Phenotypic and genotypic variation in seed production traits within a full-sib family of meadow fescue 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Phenotypic and genotypic variation for seed yield and associated traits (heading date, plant height, number of fertile tillers, 1000‐seed weight, panicle length, seed weight per panicle, fertility, flag‐leaf length and flag‐leaf width) were studied in a full‐sib family of meadow fescue using replicated clonal trials at two locations in Norway. Genotypic variances were highly significant for all traits and genotype × location interactions were significant for heading date, number of fertile tillers and seed yield. Seed yield and other seed component traits exhibited the largest genotypic variations. Heading date showed large genotype × location interaction, probably because of the very diverse origin of the two parents of the full‐sib family. Path coefficient analysis showed that panicle fertility, measured as seed weight per unit length of panicles, was by far the most important component trait contributing to seed yield, followed by the number of fertile tillers, plant height and flag‐leaf width. Flag‐leaf width and plant height had sizeable indirect effects on seed yield via panicle fertility. This is the first time that the importance of the size of the flag leaf for seed yield in herbage grasses has been demonstrated. 相似文献

The utilization of gene bank accessions for breeding purposes is generally hampered by a lack of sufficient genetic and phenotypic characterization. Results are given here of a phenotypic analysis of 30 Norwegian local populations and 10 Nordic cultivars of meadow fescue, and a combined analysis of phenotypic data with previously published molecular data based on 95 amplified fragment length polymorphic markers. Seventeen phenological and morphological, and two derived characters, were assessed on 2264 individual plants. Previous molecular diversity analyses have shown that the Norwegian local populations can be divided into three groups based on a likely history of the introduction of the species into Norway. A similar pattern was evident from relationships between the mean phenotypic values of populations and cultivars. Such a combined phenotypic and genetic characterization of germplasm can facilitate the use of gene bank material in breeding, as breeders can use these data to select populations with extreme values of a field trait, along with markers which represent potential predictors of phenotypic value. 相似文献

Summary Five botanical varieties of Brassica oleracea were grown in isolated groups of three plants. The sets of three varieties were chosen in such a way that the male parents of single plant progenies could be identified. Identification of hybrids and selfs in the progenies proved to be easy and accurate.The mean levels of cross-pollination were: sprouting broccoli 95%, kohl-rabi 91%, kale 83%, cabbage 73% and Brussels sprout 72%. There was little relationship between the self-compatibility of plants and their degree of cross-fertilisation as any natural tendency towards self-pollination appeared to be swamped by the presence of abundant foreign pollen. 相似文献

Summary The occurrence of natural triploid hybrids between tetraploid Solanum acauleBitter subsp. acaule and diploid S. infundibuliformePhilippi both tuber-bearing Solanums, in the Puna region of Jujuy, is reported. The natural hybrids, which are morphologically intermediate between their putative parents and completely male sterile, have a somatic chromosome number of 36. The artificial hybrids, obtained by crossing both parental species, closely resemble the natural ones thereby confirming their parentage. The genetic control of tall fescue forage yield has been poorly investigated. Full‐sib families from diallel crosses of Mediterranean germplasm were evaluated for forage yield over 34 months in a Mediterranean environment with severe drought stress (diallel 1, with 20 parents) and over 16 months under irrigation in a heated greenhouse simulating the Mediterranean temperature pattern (diallel 2, with 15 parents). Genetic parameters were estimated for fresh biomass in diallel 1 and dry‐matter yield in diallel 2. Additive genetic variance was always larger than non‐additive (dominance) variance. Narrow‐sense heritability was fairly high (h2 = 0.61) in diallel 1 and moderate (h2 = 0.45) in diallel 2. Predicted yield gains from one selection cycle were larger in the former diallel (23.9%) than in the latter (10.5%), suggesting that gains can be enhanced by selection under severe drought stress and over a time span sufficient to allow the variation in persistence to fully emerge. General combining ability effects of eight parents that were common to both diallel crosses were highly correlated (r = 0.94) across the contrasting evaluation environments. The extent and consistency of additive genetic effects across environments suggest that rapid improvement of forage yield is possible. 相似文献

Summary Chromosome associations of 44 tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea
Schreb., 2n=6x=42) plants derived from anther-panicle culture of Kentucky 31 were evaluated to determine if new genetic stocks could be identified. Seventeen of the plants were euploids (21 II), two were monosomic (20II+1I), 22 were double monosomic (19II+2I) and three were triple monosomic (18II+3I). Zymograms were obtained for phosphoglucoisomerase (PGI), glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), acid phosphatase (ACPH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD). The zymograms were identical for GOT, ACPH, and 6-PGD but different patterns were found for MDH and PGI in some of the double monosomics and euploids from a different piece of callus than the majority of the plants.Contribution of the USDA-ARS in cooperation with the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station. Summary The use of isoelectric focusing for the isozymic identification of cultivars and wild forms in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea
Schreb.) and determination of ploidy effects was investigated. Peroxidase zymograms from allopolyploid accessions (4x, 6x, 8x, and 10x, x=7) and randomly sampled plants of the cultivars Kenhy, Kentucky 31, and Missouri 96, were compared for band number, position, and staining intensity. There was little isozymic variation among plants in the tetraploid and hexaploid, but considerably more in the octoploid and decaploid members of the series. Yet no significant effects of ploidy on isozyme complexity or band number were observed. There were no consistent differences in band number, position, or frequencies among the three cultivars in spite of their diverse parentage. Isoclectric focusing can be used successfully in tall fescue, but the limited variability of the peroxidases encourages investigation of other isozyme systems in the future.Contribution from the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station. Manipulating apomixis for fixing tetraploid bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flüggé) hybrids exhibiting superior agronomic characteristics would be a valuable tool for the genetic improvement of this
species. The objectives were to create a second generation of hybrids by crossing sexual first-generation tetraploid hybrids
(FGTH) and unrelated apomictic FGTH or ecotypes, determine the segregation for mode of reproduction, and estimate the resulting
genetic variation and heterosis for several agronomic characteristics. The segregation for mode of reproduction was analyzed
using mature embryo sac observations. Field measurements and visual ratings were used to evaluate the growth habit, production
of inflorescences, cool-season growth and freeze resistance of hybrids. A ratio of 4.6:1 between sexual and apomictic hybrids
was observed. Only 3% of the progeny was classified as highly apomictic. The low proportion of highly apomictic progeny restricts
the feasibility of this breeding approach. Large genetic variation was observed among hybrids for growth habit, cool-season
growth and freeze resistance. The proportion of hybrids exhibiting heterosis was high for plant height, cool-season growth,
and freeze resistance. The tetraploid bahiagrass germplasm contains a large diversity for traits of agronomic importance that

Summary This study was conducted using the isozymes ACP-1, ADH-1, GOT-2, GOT-3, MDH, 6-PGD-1 and PGI-2 to: a) compare isozyme banding patterns of tall fescue somaclones with parents and b) correlate tissue culture-induced chromosome abnormalities with variant banding patterns. The 174 somaclones were grouped into seven categories based on their meiotic analyses and time of regeneration from culture. Differences in isozyme frequency between categories compared by chi-square tests were greatest for MDH, 6-PGD-1 and PGI-2, and least for ACP-1. The most significant differences in frequency were found between somaclones and parents. In comparisons of somaclone categories, the most different isozyme distributions were between the early vs. late regenerated somaclones. No significant differences in isozyme frequencies were found between all 42-chromosome somaclones vs. aneuploid somaclones and the three somaclone groups (42-normal, 42-abnormal, aneuploid) compared to each other. This study suggests that culture-induced isozyme variation alters the distribution of the isozyme phenotypes, but is not directly correlated with chromosome abnormalities. 相似文献

Improved maize (Zea mays L.) populations and population hybrids can both be profitable alternatives to commercial single-cross hybrids as well as good elite sources of diverse inbred lines. The objective of this research was to compare grain yield and agronomic performance between early maturing maize population hybrids and current early maturing commercial single-cross hybrids. This is a consequence of our research program targeted at identifying alternative heterotic patterns for the northern Corn Belt. Improved maize populations and population hybrids (S0 generations) were evaluated in experiments arranged in randomized complete block and partially balanced lattice designs across 29 environments. Grain yield potential of population hybrids was optimally expressed under irrigated conditions. Data across environments showed that 20% of the population hybrids evaluated were not different (P 0.05) from at least one of the commercial single-cross hybrids for grain yield performance, root lodging, and stalk lodging percentages. The average mid-parent heterosis value across population hybrids from different geographic regions was 20.4% with negative estimates observed in only two population hybrids. Breeding efforts toward elite populations and population hybrids have demonstrated that germplasm improvement is extremely valuable and deserves public funding. These efforts should be supported in order to enable the development of elite sources of diverse inbred lines and the development of improved population hybrids for specific markets (e.g., organic) to increase producer options. Public maize breeding programs utilizing recurrent selection methods for germplasm improvement could address the need. These programs, however, should incorporate extensive testing of population hybrids. 相似文献

Polyploid induction represents a useful tool for breeders of floral crops as larger flowers, longer flowering period and deeper
colors can be achieved through chromosome doubling. This study aimed at testing the efficiency of colchicine and oryzalin
in inducing polyploidy in three Rhododendroncultivars grown in vitro. The chemicals were used in two concentrations with 24 h and 48 h treatment durations. The survival of the plants was better
in colchicine than in oryzalin solutions. The higher concentration of both chemical skilled more plantlets. The treatment
duration in oryzalin did not affect the survival, but 48 h in colchicine was more destructive than 24 h. The low survival
rate may not be a disadvantage, if the treatment induces desired ploidy. The ploidy levels were screened with flow cytometry.
Oryzalin was more efficient than cochicine in inducing polyploidy, the treatment duration and the concentration did not have
significant effects as main factors. The biggest proportion of solid tetraploids (18.2% of the survived plants) was obtained
from the 24 h treatment in 0.005% oryzalin. Immediately after the treatment the polyploids grew very slowly, whereas most
of the unaffected diploids were vigorous from the very beginning. More mixoploids than solid tetraploids were obtained in
all treatments. Most of the mixoploids retained their chimerism, one third shifted todiploidy and one single plant to tetraploidy.

An intraspecific (Tetir × ILL 323) and an interspecific (Alpo × L. odemensis) lentil hybrid were multiplied in vitro in three consecutive micropropagation cycles to increase the production of F2 seeds. Cloning efficiencies were slightly higher for Tetir × ILL323 (83%) compared to Alpo × L. odemensis (67%). A total of 982 F2 seeds were produced in the experiment with Alpo × L. odemensis, consisting of the 334 F2 seeds of the original hybrid and 648 F2 seeds produced by the 12 plants cloned; consequently, F2 seed production was increased three-fold over the original hybrid (194%). A total of 6050 F2 seeds were produced in the experiment with Tetir × ILL 323, made up of the 483 F2 seeds of the original hybrid and 5567 F2 seeds produced by the 15 plants cloned; therefore, F2 seed production was increased by more than twelve-fold over the original hybrid (1153%). In both hybrids the F2 seed production of cloned plants diminished in the three consecutive multiplication cycles, with the plants having experienced
less vegetative development. In lentil, F2 seed production of cloned plants is related for the first time to the length of their period of vegetative development. In
conclusion, micropropagation of hybrids is an interesting tool to construct from a single individual large F1 populations that enable to increase by a manifold the production of F2 seeds useful for genetic studies and breeding. 相似文献

The wheat progenitors and other wild relatives continue to be important sources of genes for agronomically desirable traits, which can be transferred into durum wheat (Triticum turgidum; 2n = 4x = 28; AABB genomes) cultivars via hybridization. Chromosome pairing in durum × alien species hybrids provides an understanding of genomic relationships, which is useful in planning alien gene introgression strategies. Two durum cultivars, ‘Lloyd’ and ‘Langdon’, were crossed with diploid wheatgrass, Thinopyrum bessarabicum (2n = 2x = 14; JJ), to synthesize F1 hybrids (2n = 3x = 21; ABJ) with Ph1. ‘Langdon’ disomic substitution 5D(5B) was used as a female parent to produce F1 hybrids without Ph1, which resulted in elevation of pairing between durum and grass chromosomes – an important feature from the breeding standpoint. The F1 hybrids were backcrossed to respective parental cultivars and BC1 progenies were raised. ‘Langdon’ 5D(5B) substitution × Th. bessarabicum F1 hybrids were crossed with normal ‘Langdon’ to obtain BC1 progeny. Chromosome pairing relationships were studied in F1 hybrids and BC1 progenies using both conventional staining and fluorescent genomic in situ hybridization (fl‐GISH) techniques. Multicolour fl‐GISH was standardized for characterizing the nature and specificity of chromosome pairing: A–B, A–J and B–J pairing. The A–J and B–J pairing will facilitate gene introgression in durum wheat. Multicolour fl‐GISH will help in characterizing alien chromosome segments captured in the durum complement and in their location in the A and/or B genome, thereby accelerating chromosome engineering research. 相似文献

Intergeneric F1 hybrids between Raphanus sativus (2n = 18, RR) and Moricandia arvensis (2n = 28, MaMa) have been produced through ovary culture followed by embryo culture, when M. arvensis was used as a pistillate parent. Six BC1 plants were also obtained through ovary culture followed by embryo culture in the backcross of an amphidiploid F1 , hybrid with R. sativus cv. 'Pink ball'. Two BC1 plants were ses-quidiploids (2n = 32, MaRR), and the other BC1 , plants were hyperploid with 2n = 55, having MaMaRRR genomes. BC2 , seeds were obtained by conventional pollination in the successive backcross of two sesquidiploid BC1 , plants with R. sativus cv. 'Pink ball'. Their seed set percentages were 12.7% and 17.0%, respectively. These novel hybrid plants and derived progenies may be valuable materials for the genetic investigation and breeding of Brassiceae , including R. sativus. 相似文献
