Injuries and blemishes in a semi-feral herd of ponies 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
With the goal of characterizing the type and degree of injuries and blemishes incurred by horses living under natural social conditions, all members of a semi-feral herd of ponies were inspected on 4 occasions over a period of 28 months. Two occasions were during breeding/foaling season and 2 during non–breeding/foaling season months. On each occasion, each animal was examined (N = 47-65) and all injuries or blemish marks were recorded. Based on the types and number of injuries or blemishes, an injury/blemish grade was assigned for each inspection, ranging from 1 for no blemishes to 6 for more than 1 open wound. Almost all injuries and blemishes recorded were extremely mild. Only 12 of the 213 inspections and 14 of the 858 total injuries and blemishes involved wounds affecting tissues other than hair and skin.Males had significantly greater mean injury/blemish grade than females (P < .0001). For all social categories and ages, the mean injury/blemish grade was significantly greater in the breeding/foaling season months than during the non–breeding/foaling season (P < .0001).All foals were blemish-free at the non–breeding/foaling season inspections (n = 24) and relatively blemish-free (9 of 14) at the breeding/foaling season inspections. The rump and the barrel areas were the most common site of injuries or blemishes, both as a percentage of the total injury count and as a percentage of inspections involving those areas. These findings are consistent with the seasonal and gender patterns of aggressive behavior seen in this herd. Compared with reports of truly feral horse populations, it appears that injuries are fewer and less severe in this semi-feral herd. In addition, there appear to be fewer leg injuries in this semi-feral herd than has been described for truly feral horse populations. 相似文献

Objective To characterize the ocular anomalies, determine their recurrence in families and assess the mode of inheritance of the most prevalent anomalies through pedigree analysis in a herd of Exmoor ponies. Animals studied Thirty Exmoor ponies residing in south‐western Ontario, Canada. Procedures Ophthalmic examination was performed using direct ophthalmoscopy, slit‐lamp biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy, pre‐ and post‐pupillary dilation. Following compilation of ocular findings, pedigree analysis was conducted to assess the recurrence pattern of specific anomalies in families and the data were tested for significance for breed prevalence and gender dependence, using Fisher’s exact test. Results Twenty‐eight purebred ponies and two cross‐breds, ranging from 14 days to 31 years were examined. A prominent brow above the eyes characteristic of this breed was a consistent periocular feature of adult ponies. In nine ponies, eyelid sarcoid, iris nevus, Mittendorf’s dot, hyaloid artery remnant, and hyper‐reflective vitreal strands were detected while the lesions recorded in the remaining 21 included macroblepharon, persistent pupillary membranes, iris hypoplasia, cataracts, focal choroidal or retinal pigment epithelium hypoplasia and optic nerve head coloboma. The most common ocular finding was cataracts seen mainly in females. Statistical tests on prevalence data confirmed a significant breed and sex association. Pedigree analysis favored a sex‐linked mode of inheritance for cataracts in this line of Exmoor ponies. Conclusions Although the ocular anomalies detected in this group have been previously reported in other breeds of horses, this is the first report of equine cataracts showing a familial trend suggestive of a sex‐linked genetic defect. 相似文献

This case report describes two full sibling gelding American Quarter Horses that presented separately for evaluation of an external mass (Case 1) and signs of colic and epistaxis (Case 2). The horses had the same owner and resided on the same property for the majority of their lives. Both horses were definitively or presumptively diagnosed antemortem with haemangiosarcoma, and on necropsy, multicentric (Case 1) and primary renal (Case 2) haemangiosarcoma were confirmed. A unique finding on necropsy was extensive bilateral renal involvement. Due to the low incidence of haemangiosarcoma in horses, the unique organ involvement and common ancestry of these two horses, a genetic cause is suspected. 相似文献

One case of caecocaecal intussusception (case 1) and one case of caecocolic intussusception (case 2) in ponies are described. Case 1 showed mild abdominal discomfort for seven days followed by sudden death whereas case 2 showed continuous moderate pain for three weeks. At post mortem examination, case 1 showed intussusception of the base of the caecum into the body whereas in case 2, the entire caecum had invaginated into the right ventral colon. Histopathological examination showed that the lesions in both animals had been present for a long time. 相似文献

Eight pairs of pony mares were observed. Members of a pair were housed in adjacent stalls and fed hay ad libitum. The behavior of both ponies was recorded simultaneously in the morning (1000 to 1200 h) and afternoon (1400 to 1600 h) for a total of 117 h. The time budget was: 70.1 +/- 8.6% eating; 17.8 +/- 7.4% standing (including stand rest, stand alert and stand nonalert); 5.2 +/- 7.0% pushing hay; 2.9 +/- 1.2% walking; 1.9 +/- 2.9% drinking; 1.3 +/- 1.1% self-grooming; .2 +/- .3% defecating; .06 +/- .1% chewing nonfood items; .06 +/- .03% urination; .06 +/- .1% licking salt; .07 +/- .1% pawing hay; .6 +/- .7% lying and .07 +/- .08% stretching the neck over the stall wall dividing the ponies. While eating, the ponies lifted their heads 25.4 +/- 11.0 times/h. In less than one-half of the occasions when urination or defecation was observed, the ponies walked away from the spot where they had been eating to eliminate. During one-half of the observations, visual contact between the ponies was prevented by a solid partition between the stalls. The ponies spent significantly more time standing nonalert when the partition prevented visual contact (12 +/- 7%) than when visual contact could take place (6 +/- 3%, P less than .05). When fresh hay was supplied in the mornings, the ponies spent similar amounts of time eating whether visual contact was allowed or not, but in the afternoon significantly more time was spent feeding when visual contact was allowed (73 +/- 4%) than when it was not (60 +/- 7%).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The myoelectric activity of the cecum and right ventral colon (RVC) was studied in 4 female ponies. Eight, bipolar Ag-AgCl electrodes were sequentially placed on the seromuscular layer of the cecum (6 electrodes) and RVC (2 electrodes), and recordings were begun 14 days after surgery. The myoelectric activity for each pony was recorded during 12, 60-minute recording sessions done during the interdigestive period (3 to 7 hours after the morning feeding). Coordinated series of spike bursts were recognized as independent motility patterns in the cecum and in the RVC. Local haustra-haustra myoelectric activity involving approximately 40 cm of the cecal body (0.45 +/- 0.03 spike bursts/min) were detected. A series of spike bursts started at the cecal apex and progressed to, but stopped at, the caudal cecal base (0.40 +/- 0.03 spike bursts/min). Infrequently, a series of spike bursts started at the apex and progressed to the cranial cecal base (0.09 +/- 0.01 spike bursts/min). More commonly, a series of spike bursts with a conduction velocity of 3.8 +/- 0.07 cm/s, began in the cranial base and progressed orally to the cecal apex (0.46 +/- 0.03 spike bursts/min). Spike bursts conducted aborally (propulsion) beginning at the origin of the RVC (0.05 +/- 0.007 spike bursts/min) and spike bursts conducted orally (retropulsion; 0.15 +/- 0.02 spike bursts/min) were seen independent of cecal myoelectric activity. A progressive series of coordinated spike bursts, which began at the cecal apex, were conducted through the cecolic orifice and continued into the RVC (0.42 +/- 0.02 spike bursts/min), representing the only pattern common to the cecum and RVC.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Respiratory dead-space, tidal volume, respiratory rate, blood gases, cardiac output, heart rate and arterial and pulmonary arterial blood pressures were measured in two conscious, trained ponies in the standing position and in left lateral recumbency. The ponies were reluctant to remain lying down for more than about 20 mins but the reason for this did not become apparent. Tidal volume was reduced during recumbency but the respiratory rate increased, tending to maintain the minute volume at about that of the standing animal. Arterial carbon dioxide tension did not change significantly from standing values but the mean arterial oxygen tension values tended to decrease in both ponies during recumbency because of a slight increase in pulmonary venous admixture. Venous admixture in these two laterally recumbent conscious animals was considerably less than previously reported for anaesthetised subjects. 相似文献

Summary Two cases of severe scapulohumeral osteoarthritis in Miniature ponies are described, one bilateral and the other unilateral. The condition is thought to occur in miniature breeds as a result of scapulohumeral dysplasia. The presentation in one of the ponies was unusal: it refused to pick up either fore limb, with progression to a uniquely bizarre gait with narrow forelimb placement, an arched back and widely placed hindlimbs camped well forward under the body. The other pony was presented for an acute unilateral non-weight bearing forelimb lameness. Response to analgesia in both cases was poor and both ponies were euthanased. A pathological fracture was evident in one affected glenoid cavity. 相似文献

A clinical dose rate (4.4 mg/kg bodyweight) of phenylbutazone was administered intravenously and orally to six Welsh mountain ponies to provide data on the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of the drug. In three, three-year-old ponies, clearance of the drug from plasma after intravenous administration was almost twice as rapid as in three ponies aged eight to 10 years. After oral administration, plasma phenylbutazone levels were greater in the older ponies, the area under the plasma concentration time curve being almost twice as high. This did not result from more efficient absorption but from slower plasma clearance. The fractional absorption of phenylbutazone was similar in young and older ponies, 0.78 and 0.75, respectively. The 24 hour urinary excretion of phenylbutazone and its hydroxylated metabolites, oxyphenbutazone and gamma-hydroxyphenylbutazone, accounted for approximately 25 per cent of the administered intravenous dose in both young and older ponies. OBJECTIVE: To compare the healing and mechanical strength of a multiple split autologous tendon graft (MG) to a whole autologous tendon graft (WG) in the deep digital flexor tendon of ponies. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro evaluation of two different tendon-grafting techniques. ANIMALS OR SAMPLE POPULATION: Six ponies of mixed gender and age. METHODS: Tenotomies performed in forelimb deep digital flexor tendons (DDFT) distal to the insertion of the accessory ligament (AL-DDFT) were repaired with free autologous grafts from the hindlimb lateral digital extensor tendon (LDET). Grafts were either whole (WG) or split into three longitudinal strips (multiple graft, MG). Tendons and graft sites were collected and loaded (2.54 cm/s) to failure at either 4 or 8 weeks after surgery. Cross-sectional area was determined by both impression cast (IC) and an inkblot (IB) method. Tissue maturity and inflammation were evaluated by microscopy. RESULTS: Gap formation was a consistent finding in all repair sites. No statistical differences were found in healing or mechanical variables between MG and WG techniques. The failure stress for the 8-week repairs (15.51 +/- 3.1 MPa IB and 11.73 +/- .77 MPa IC, 16.13 +/- 2.2 MPa IB and 10.22 +/- .76 MPa IC for MG and WG, respectively) were significantly greater (P <.0005) than for 4-week repairs (3.71 +/- 1.7 MPa IB and 2.68 +/- 1.44 MPa IC, 2.81 +/- 1.46 MPa IB and 2.3 +/- 1.7 MPa IC for MG and WG, respectively). The repair tissue was more mature (P <.05) at 8 weeks than at 4 weeks, but there was no significant difference in inflammatory responses at 4 and 8 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: There was a sixfold increase in strength between 4 and 8 weeks of healing, but no significant difference in healing or strength between the MG and WG techniques. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In ponies, autologous tendon grafting contributes to a strong repair during the early convalescent period, but splitting a tendon graft seemingly offers no appreciable advantage over use of a whole graft. 相似文献

During a two year period the spread of bovine syncytial virus was monitored in a closed herd of 50 to 100 milking cows. Out of a nucleus of 49 nonpregnant and pregnant heifers, six were found to be infected with bovine syncytial virus. Virus was detected only in the progeny of infected cows and not in the progeny of uninfected animals. Nineteen progeny of the bovine syncytial virus infected cows were studied in detail and virus was isolated from only four. Horizontal spread of the virus did not occur. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate behavioral compliance of horses and ponies with simulated intranasal vaccination and assess development of generalized aversion to veterinary manipulations. DESIGN: Clinical trial. ANIMALS: 28 light horse mares, 3 pony geldings, 2 light horse stallions, and 3 pony stallions that had a history of compliance with veterinary procedures. PROCEDURE: Behavioral compliance with 2 intranasal vaccine applicators was assessed. Compliance with standard physical examination procedures was assessed before and after a single experience with either of the applicators or a control manipulation to evaluate development of generalized aversion to veterinary manipulation. RESULTS: In all 30 horses, simulated intranasal vaccination or the control manipulation could be performed without problematic avoidance behavior, and simulated intranasal vaccination did not have any significant effect on duration of or compliance with a standardized physical examination that included manipulation of the ears, nose, and mouth. Results were similar for the 2 intranasal vaccine applicators, and no difference in compliance was seen between horses in which warm versus cold applicators were used. For 3 of the 6 ponies, substantial avoidance behavior was observed in association with simulated intranasal vaccination, and compliance with physical examination procedures decreased after simulated intranasal vaccination. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although some compliance problems were seen with ponies, neither problems with compliance with simulated intranasal vaccination nor adverse effects on subsequent physical examination were identified in any of the horses. Further study is needed to understand factors involved in practitioner reports of aversion developing in association with intranasal vaccination. 相似文献

The analgesic and spasmolytic effects of dipyrone (Novalgin) (2500 mg/100 kg bodyweight) hyoscine-N-butylbromide (Buscopan) (20 mg/100 kg bodyweight) and a combination of both drugs were evaluated in a balloon-induced model of colic, using five ponies with caecal fistulae. The drugs were given intravenously and 0.9 per cent sodium chloride solution (5 ml/100 kg bodyweight) was used as a control. The physiological saline solution and dipyrone had no effect on caecal contractions. After the injection of hyoscine-N-butylbromide and the drug combination caecal contractions ceased within 30 seconds and for 20 and 24 minutes, respectively (P less than 0.05). The results on pain relief were not statistically significant for any of the drugs. Dipyrone had a good analgesic effect in only two of the ponies, starting after eight to 10 minutes and lasting for 50 minutes. The drug combination relieved pain within 30 seconds after injection and the relief lasted for 50 minutes in three of the ponies and for 20 minutes in the other two. Hyoscine-N-butylbromide alone produced an analgesic effect within 30 seconds after injection which lasted for 20 minutes. 相似文献

The cardiopulmonary effects of an intravenous (iv) medetomidine injection (5 μg/kg) followed 5 min later by its infusion at 3.5 μg/kg/h for 115 rnin were studied in 9 horses and ponies. Five minutes after the end of infusion 60 μg/kg atipamezole were given. Physiological data during infusion were compared with pre-sedation values. Stroke volume was reduced significantly 5 min after initial medetomidine injection. Cardiac index was reduced significantly and systemic vascular resistance increased significantly for the first 20 min, but returned towards pre-sedation values after this time. Arterial blood pressures were reduced significantly from 30 min until the end of the procedure (minimum MAP was 102.4 ± 9.61 mmHg). Mixed venous oxygen tension was reduced significantly during the infusion. Respiratory rate fell and PaCO2- rose significantly from 40 min onward. Other variables showed no significant changes. The horses recovered rapidly after atipamezole was injected. Arterial blood pressures remained significantly lowered, but other cardiovascular variables returned towards pre-sedation values. It is concluded that the infusion of medetomidine at 3.5 μg/kg/h causes minimum cardiopulmonary depression once the effects of an initial 5 μg/kg injection have waned, and so could prove suitable as part of an anaesthetic technique in equidae. 相似文献

To determine resistance of small strongyles to albendazole, 3 female ponies (group 1) were grazed on a pasture from May to November 1985 and were treated with 7.5 mg of albendazole/kg of body weight, PO, 2 days before turnout in May and again in June and in July. Three other female ponies (group 2) grazed on a similar pasture from May to July, were treated with 7.5 mg of albendazole/kg, and were removed to another pasture until November. In December, ponies from both groups were treated with 7.5 mg of albendazole/kg, and 8 days later, they were euthanatized and necropsied for a critical test. Worm egg counts in the ponies' feces revealed that the May treatment of group 1 and the July treatment of group 2 were more effective than were later treatments. Numbers of small strongyles were higher in group 1 than in group 2. Efficacy of treatment against all developmental stages of small strongyles was higher in group 2 than in group 1. Efficacy was low in both groups against parasitic 3rd- and 4th-stage larvae. Fifteen species of small strongyles were identified at necropsy. Efficacy was limited against adult Cyathostomum coronatum, Cya labratum, Cylicostephanus calicatus, and Cyl poculatus in both groups; Cylicocyclus nassatus, Cyl minutus, and Cyl longibursatus in group 1; and Cya labiatum in group 2. Efficacy was 100% against Cya catinatum, Cyl goldi, and 5 other species that were found in low numbers. 相似文献

Genetic parameters and trends for length of productive life (LPL), lifetime number of piglets born alive per year (LBAY), lifetime number of piglets weaned per year (LPWY), lifetime litter birth weight per year (LBWY) and lifetime litter weaning weight per year (LWWY) were estimated using phenotypic records of 3085 sows collected from 1989 to 2013 in a commercial swine farm in Northern Thailand. The five‐trait animal model included the fixed effects of first farrowing year‐season, breed group and age at first farrowing. Random effects were animal and residual. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.04 ± 0.02 for LBWY to 0.17 ± 0.04 for LPL. Genetic correlations ranged from 0.66 ± 0.14 between LPL and LBAY to 0.95 ± 0.02 between LPWY and LWWY. Spearman rank correlations among estimated breeding values for LPL and lifetime production efficiency traits tended to be higher for boars than for sows. Sire genetic trends were negative and significant for all traits, except for LPWY. Dam genetic trends were positive and significant for all traits. Sow genetic trends were mostly positive and significant only for LPWY and LBWY. Improvement of LPL and lifetime production efficiency traits will require these traits to be included in the selection indexes used to choose replacement boars and gilts in this population. 相似文献
