The literature available on the agouti (Dasyprocta leporina) is very limited. The agouti is a Neotropical rodent found in Trinidad and Tobago, Central and South America. This study focuses on one of the many unexplored areas relating to the species, the male reproductive system. The results showed that the mean testicular length, diameter and weight was 3.67 +/- 0.12 cm, 1.67 +/- 0.04 cm and 5.03 +/- 0.52 g respectively. The paired testes and epididymis were found in contact with the abdominal muscles within scrotal pouches, which are evaginations of the caudoventral abdominal wall. The caput epididymis is enclosed by a fat body. The ductus deferens has a mean length and diameter of 10.98 +/- 0.40 cm and 0.14 +/- 0.01 cm respectively. At the urethral end of the ductus deferens the diameter of each duct expends to form the ampulla. The mean diameter of each of the ampulla was 0.25 cm. The accessory sex organs of the male agouti (D. leporina) include the vesicular glands, the coagulating glands, the prostate glands and the bulbourethral glands. The penis of the agouti is U-shaped with a mean length of 9.90 +/- 0.43 cm. The glans penis contains an os penis, a pair of lateral penile cartilages and paired ventral keratinaceous styles.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the value of ultrasonographic characterization of the adrenal glands in dogs with hypoadrenocorticism. Measurements of adrenal glands were obtained in six dogs with hypoadrenocorticism. The adrenal glands on both sides were shorter (range: left adrenal gland length, 10.0 to 19.7 mm; right adrenal gland length, 9.5 to 18.8 mm) and thinner (range: left adrenal gland thickness, 2.2 to 3.0 mm; right adrenal gland thickness, 2.2 to 3.4 mm) than in normal dogs (range: left adrenal gland length, 13.2 to 26.3 mm; right adrenal gland length, 12.4 to 22.6 mm; left adrenal gland thickness, 3.0 to 5.2 mm; right adrenal gland thickness, 3.1 to 6.0 mm). Statistical analysis revealed a significant reduction in size of the left adrenal gland (p less than 0.05) in dogs with hypoadrenocorticism compared to the left adrenal gland in normal dogs. The results of this study show that atrophy of the adrenal glands in dogs with hypoadrenocorticism seems to lead to an ultrasonographic-measurable reduction in size of the adrenal glands.  相似文献

The peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique was used to identify cytoplasmic immunoglobulins in the accessory sex glands of 15 normal bulls and 13 bulls with inflammation of the ASG. Immunoglobulin containing cells (ICC) of the types IgA, IgM, total IgG, IgG1 and IgG2 were measured and their percentages expressed. In accessory sex glands from normal bulls, IgA containing cells were the most frequent in prostate and bulbourethral glands (86.7% and 86.1%, respectively of all ICC present) whereas in the ampulla, IgG containing cells comprised 78.6% of the ICC. IgG1 and IgG2 containing cells were present in all the accessory sex glands in approximately equal numbers. Frequencies of IgM containing cells in the ampulla, prostate and bulbourethral glands were 6.3%, 4.0% and 3.7%, respectively. Although all isotypes of ICC were present in the seminal vesicle, the very low number precluded accurate quantification. In inflamed ampulla, seminal vesicle, bulbourethral gland and colliculus seminalis, IgG containing cells were the most frequent ICC with values of 66.2%, 83.0%, 69.0% and 53.5%, respectively; IgA containing cells were the second in prevalence with values of 21.5%, 10.3% 19.3% and 40.5%, respectively. The contribution of ICC to the locally protective immunoglobulins in accessory sex gland secretions is discussed.  相似文献

The macroscopic and light microscopic structure of the vesicular and bulbourethral glands was investigated in male pigs, which were castrated early in life and examined at slaughter weight. The vesicular glands showed a constant morphological pattern while in the bulbourethral glands an individual variation was observed in the number of mucous acini and the amount of interstitial tissue. In spite of this variation in the normal structure, the latter gland as well as the vesicular gland showed reliable changes after treatment with diethylstilboestrol.  相似文献

Catalase activity in equine semen   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the activity of catalase in equine semen. ANIMALS: 15 stallions of known and unknown reproductive history. PROCEDURE: Seminal plasma was collected from raw equine semen by centrifugation, and samples of seminal plasma were frozen prior to assay for catalase activity. Tissue samples (n = 3 stallions) from the bulbourethral gland, prostate gland, vesicular gland, and testis were homogenized, and cauda epididymal fluid was collected for determination of catalase activity. Catalase activity was determined as an enzyme kinetic assay by the disappearance of H2O2 as measured by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. RESULTS: Catalase activity in equine seminal plasma was 989.3 +/- 1678 U/ml (mean +/- SEM), and the specific activity of catalase in equine seminal plasma was 98.7 +/- 29.2 U/mg of protein. Specific activity of catalase in tissue homogenates was significantly higher in the prostate gland (954 +/- 270 U/mg of protein) than in the ampulla (59 +/- 5 U/mg of protein), bulbourethral gland (54 +/- 11 U/mg of protein), vesicular gland (39 +/- 3 U/mg of protein), cauda epididymal fluid (11 +/- 3 U/mg protein), or testis (54 +/- 6 U/mg of protein). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Equine seminal plasma contains a high activity of catalase that is derived primarily from prostatic secretions. Procedures such as semen cryopreservation that remove most seminal plasma from semen may reduce the ability to scavenge H2O2 and thereby increase the susceptibility of spermatozoa to oxidative stress.  相似文献

The ultrasonographic measurements of the adrenal glands of 24 diseased cats without a clinically or laboratory identifiable endocrinopathy were evaluated retrospectively. The mean (sd) thickness of the left adrenal glands was 3.8 (0.8) mm and their mean length was 11.3 (2.8) mm; the thickness of the right glands was 4.5 (1.0) mm and their length was 9.8 (2.4) mm. The products of thickness and length were 43.9 (20.2) mm(2) for the left gland and 45.7 (19.7) mm(2) for the right gland. There were no significant correlations between the bodyweight, body surface area or body condition scores of the cats and the thickness, length or the product of thickness and length of either gland.  相似文献

This study compares morphological changes, performed with real-time transrectal ultrasonography, of testis and accessory glands and seasonal endocrine changes in a wild (Mouflon) and a domesticated (Spanish Merino) breed of sheep. In Mouflons, the maximum plasma testosterone concentrations, testicular diameter and vesicular gland size occurred synchronously during autumn (P < 0.001). In Merino rams the highest circulating levels of testosterone (P < 0.05) and maximum testicular diameter (P < 0.001) occurred during summer, with no seasonal variations in vesicular and bulbourethral glands. The seasonal changes in plasma concentrations of prolactin were not correlated with annual variations in testicular and glandular size in neither wild nor domestic species. No differences were observed between both species for the seasonal pattern of prolactin secretion and mean amplitude of melatonin. Wide differences in reproductive patterns between wild and domestic types of rams do not appear to be attributed to seasonal changes in prolactin and melatonin secretion.  相似文献

Ultrasonographic images of the accessory sex glands of 8 stallions were recorded immediately prior to sexual preparation, immediately after sexual preparation, and immediately after ejaculation. Relative size changes, determined by measurements of ultrasonograms of accessory sex gland, were contrasted. Length and width of the bulbourethral glands increased significantly (P less than 0.05) after sexual preparation and decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) after ejaculation. The increase in bulbourethral gland volume following sexual preparation was correlated significantly (P less than 0.01) with the number of false mounts attempted by stallions during sexual preparation. Diameter of the pelvic portion of the urethra did not change significantly (P greater than 0.05) after sexual preparation or after ejaculation. Prostate gland lobular and isthmic thickness increased significantly (P less than 0.05) after sexual preparation and decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) after ejaculation. Total and lumenal diameter of the ampullae increased significantly (P less than 0.05) after sexual preparation and decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) after ejaculation. Diameter of the ampulla wall did not change significantly (P greater than 0.05) after sexual preparation or ejaculation. Reduction of the lumenal area of the ampullae after ejaculation was not correlated (P greater than 0.05) to concentration of spermatozoa or total spermatozoa per ejaculate. Total and lumenal diameters of the vesicular glands increased significantly (P less than 0.05) after sexual preparation and decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) after ejaculation. Diameter of the vesicular gland wall did not change significantly (P greater than 0.05) after sexual preparation or ejaculation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The accessory sex glands of 521 slaughtered bulls were examined for lesions; normal anatomical observations were also made.
The average weights and measurements (length and width) of the seminal vesicles and bulbourethral glands of 110 bulls were 34.1 g and 9.1 × 2.5 cm, and 4.6 g and 2.9 × 1.9 cm, respectively. Weights of both glands were correlated to age, but bulbourethral gland weight was more closely correlated to bodyweight than age. The average length and diameter of the ampulla was 11.1 and 1.0 cm, respectively.
Seminal vesiculitis and ampullitis were found in 9.0% and 3.8% of bulls respectively. The incidence of both conditions was highest in old bulls. Mesonephric duct anomalies (observed in 1.7% of bulls) and other congenital and inflammatory lesions of the accessory sex glands were also recorded.
Macroscopically normal accessory sex glands of 86 bulls were studied histologically and a high percentage of all glands showed inflammatory changes.
Attempts to isolate viral agents, Mycoplasma, and Chlamydia from accessory sex glands were unsuccessful. Corynebacterium pyogenes was isolated from two cases of seminal vesiculitis. IBR-IPV virus, Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis and Tritrichomonas foetus were frequently isolated from the prepuce of bulls, many of which also had positive serological titres to Leptospira pomona and Leptospira hardjo.
No one factor capable of causing bull infertility was consistently identified, and the incidence figures for observed conditions of the accessory sex glands were generally comparable to those found in bull populations elsewhere.  相似文献

Heads of ten healthy adult ostrich obtained from slaughter house were the constituted materials of the study. The Harderian gland (HG) was dissected out, and all of the gross morphometrical parameters including length, width and thickness as well as weight of left and right glands were recorded. Tissue sections were stained, using haematoxylin and eosin, Masson trichrome, periodic acid‐Schiff and Alcian blue (pH 2.5) techniques. In ostrich, HG was an orbital organ located ventromedially around the posterior part of the eyeball. It was an oval flatted shape, light pink colour with irregular outline and was pointed in the dorsal end. Its mean length was 35.30 ± 2.84 mm and 35.55 ± 3.58 mm in left and right sides, respectively, and mean width 15.30 ± 1.20 mm and 15.65 ± 1.18 mm in left and right sides, respectively. There was no significant difference between length, thickness, weight and width of left and right glands. Histological results showed that the glandular epithelium was multilobular and compound tubuloalveolar. The gland was surrounded by a connective tissue capsule, and the epithelium was lined by simple columnar epithelial cells of varying height. The secretion of HG was mucous and the secretion type was apocrine. Mucosubstance analysis revealed that secretory units contained acidic and neutral glycoproteins. The granules within the epithelial cells lining the intralobular and inter‐lobular excretory ducts of the gland were positive for periodic acid‐Schiff and Alcian blue (pH 2.5).  相似文献

ADRENAL ULTRASONOGRAPHY CORRELATED WITH HISTOPATHOLOGY IN FERRETS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The adrenal glands of twenty-six, 12-to 53-month-old, ferrets without clinical signs of adrenal disease were examined and measured by ultrasonography and the findings compared with those from gross examination and histopathology. Of 51 adrenal glands examined, 27 were normal, 23 had either nodular or diffuse cortical hyperplasia and 1 had an adenocarcinoma. There was no statistically significant difference between the sonographic nor gross size of normal adrenal glands and those with hyperplasia. Moderate correlation was found between gross and sonographic measurements of length for both right (r=0.783; p<0.0001) and left (r=0.609; p<0.001) adrenal glands; however, the sonographic measurements were less than the gross measurements. Correlation was found between the sex and weight of the ferret and adrenal gland length (p<0.01) and width (p<0.02). In female ferrets, the length, width, and depth of the right adrenal gland sonographically measured (mean±sd) 7.5±1.2 mm, 3.7±0.6 mm, 2.8±0.4 mm, respectively, and the left measured 7.4±1.0 mm, 3.7±0.4 mm, 2.8±0.4 mm; in males, the right adrenal measured 8.9±1.6 mm, 3.8±0.6 mm, 3.0±0.8 mm and the left measured 8.6±1.2 mm, 4.2±0.6 mm, 3.0±0.6 mm. Accessory adrenal tissue was not identified during the sonographic examination but was grossly found in 10 of the ferrets. It was associated with either the right, left or both adrenal glands.  相似文献

Light and electron microscopical study of the vesicular gland of the bull
The vesicular glands of six adult bulls were studied grossly and with the microscope. Corrosion casts (of the duct system) examined with the dissecting microscope and the SEM clearly showed that the gland was tubulo-alveolar.
The light microscope showed two rows of tall glandular cells. The basal epithelial cells (termed "dwarf lipid-cells") contained uni- as well as plurivacuolar lipid droplets. In the tall glandular cells fine lipid droplets were seen mainly in the supranuclear cytoplasm.
Electron microscopical examinations permit division of the tall glandular cells into three compartments, shown in a semischematic drawing. The results of this study allow the conclusion that the basal "fat cells" and the peroxysomes of the tall glandular cells are related to the formation of prostaglandins.  相似文献

The adrenal glands of 20 normal ferrets were imaged with ultrasound. Of the forty glands, only 4 (three right and one left) could not be clearly identified. Mean (±standard deviation) dimensions of the right (7.6 ± 1.8 mm length by 2.6 ± 0.4 mm width) and left (7.2 ± 1.8 mm length by 2.8 ± 0.5 mm width) glands were similar. Both adrenal glands were wider (p<0.05) sonographically in males than females. Measured length and width of the right gland positively correlated (p<0.05) with body weight. The glands had a hypoechoic outer zone and hyperechoic central region, were elongate to avoid in shape and located medial and, variably, at the level of the cranial pole of the ipsilateral kidney. This study demonstrates that normal adrenal glands can be imaged in ferrets.  相似文献

Immunohistochemistry was applied to determine the distribution patterns of nerve fibres containing tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DbetaH), neuropeptide Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) in the prostate, seminal vesicle (SV) and bulbourethral glands (BU) of male sheep. In all organs studied, cholinergic innervation was more developed than noradrenergic innervation. Numerous VAChT-immunoreactive (IR) nerve fibres were found in the muscular layer and mucosa of the SV and BU as well as in the prostate. A similar abundance of noradrenergic nerve fibres (showing immunoreactivity both to TH and DbetaH) was also found in both layers of the SV and BU (but not in the prostate). In the prostate a moderate density of VIP-IR nerve fibres was present but only very scarce NPY-IR nerve fibres were shown. All the studied accessory sexual glands (ASG) of male sheep contained VIP-IR nerve fibres in a similar frequency. Double immunohistochemistry revealed that the vast majority of noradrenergic nerve fibres also contained NPY. None of the noradrenergic nerve fibres showed the presence of VAChT or VIP. The possible functional significance of these findings is discussed.  相似文献

This study was a follow up to the study on the gross anatomy of the male agouti ( Dasyprocta leporina ) reproductive system. The seminal vesicles of the agouti are lobulated structures. The mean diameter of the large lumen is 883.6 ± 76.83 μm. The mucosa (24.1 ± 0.92 μm), which is lined by pseudo-stratified columnar epithelium is thrown into folds, which often branch. The lamina muscularis mucosa is thin and is made of loose connective tissue containing blood vessels. The mucosa of the leaf-like coagulating glands of the agouti is folded. The mean diameter of the lumen is 488.3 ± 41.96 μm. The mucosa contains tubuloalveolar glands, which have a mean length of 199.5 ± 28.83 μm. The thin epithelium, 15.0 ± 1.25-μm wide, consists mostly of pseudo-stratified columnar cells. The epithelium also has surface modifications in the form of apical blebs and cilia. The epithelium of the agouti's lobulated prostate gland is also folded creating a large lumen with a mean diameter of 995.5 ± 55.70 μm. The mucosa contains tubular and tubuloalveolar glands, each having a mean length of 134.4 ± 13.59 μm. The epithelium (13.9 ± 1.16 μm) consists of pseudo-stratified columnar cells. The pea-shaped bulbourethral gland (BG) of the agouti consists of convoluted tubular, mucous secretory units, which are irregularly shaped each with a mean length of 177.9 ± 7.10 μm and a mean width of 63.5 ± 3.97 μm. The BG of the agouti are ventro-lateral to the rectum and dorsally positioned to the pubic symphysis, and connected to the urethra by short ducts.  相似文献

Effects of zeranol on scrotal circumference, serving ability, semen characteristics, and postmortem measurements of the genital organs were determined in beef bulls from 9 to 20 months of age. Group 1 (n = 5) served as a nonimplanted control group. Group 2A (n = 5) was implanted with 36 mg of zeranol at birth and at 3 and 6 months of age. Group 2B (n = 5) was implanted with 36 mg of zeranol every 3 months from birth through 18 months of age. Scrotal circumference was adversely affected by zeranol in groups 2A and 2B, but values approached those of group 1 with increasing age. Serving ability was also affected adversely but tended to recover with increasing age. Semen quality was low in groups 2A and 2B and did not improve with increasing age. There was no difference in testicular weight, vesicular gland weight, and penis length among groups when bulls were slaughtered at 20 months of age. Epididymal weight was greater in group-2B bulls and was most likely a consequence of epididymal lesions. Histologic examination of the genital organs revealed that zeranol induced adenomyosis and sperm granulomas in the caudae epididymidis and markedly altered the structure of the sexual accessory glands of bulls in groups 2A and 2B. Alterations in the vesicular glands were characterized by reduced alveolar development and an increase in connective tissue. Low epithelium associated with focal areas of squamous metaplasia were common in the prostate of groups 2A and 2B bulls. Lesions in the bulbourethral glands were characterized by low glandular epithelium, focal areas of squamous metaplasia, cystic collecting ducts, and an increase in connective tissue. Groups 2A and 2B had more abnormal seminiferous tubules than did group 1. Lesions in groups 2A and 2B may have been direct effects of zeranol or may have resulted from reduced testosterone secretion.  相似文献

We conducted a retrospective study to determine whether multidetector computed tomography (CT) could be of value for adrenal gland assessment in dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. Adrenal gland attenuation and volume values of 49 dogs with hyperadrenocorticism were recorded and age, body weight, and gender were examined to determine if a relationship existed between these variables and adrenal gland morphology. There was not a statistically significant difference in mean X-ray attenuation of the left vs. right adrenal gland in normal dogs (35.3 +/- 6.1 HU), or in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism. The mean adrenal X-ray attenuation (+/- standard deviation [SD]) in dogs with microadenoma was 33.1 +/- 6.8 vs. 31.8 +/- 12.7 HU for dogs with macroadenoma, and these values were not statistically different. The mean volume of the left adrenal gland in normal dogs (0.59 +/- 0.17 cm3) was greater than that of the right adrenal gland (0.54 +/- 0.19 cm3) (P < 0.05). The mean CT volume (+/- SD) of the adrenal glands in dogs with microadenoma vs. macroadenoma were 1.60 +/- 1.25 vs. 2.88 +/- 1.60 cm3, respectively. There was no effect of age or gender on adrenal gland morphology or X-ray attenuation. The weight effect was the most important source of variation for the volume measurement in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism.  相似文献

Schirmer tear tests I and II values for 10 healthy cats were 16.2 +/- 3.8 mm/min and 13.2 +/- 3.4 mm/min, respectively. Surgical removal of the lacrimal gland or the third eyelid gland from the left eye resulted in decreased Schirmer tear test-I values. Clinical signs of keratoconjunctivitis sicca were not seen until the lacrimal and third eyelid glands were removed, at which time the Schirmer tear test-I value was close to 0 mm/min. Conjunctival glands (accessory lacrimal glands of Krause and Wolfring) appeared to contribute little to tear production in these cats.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities in spermatozoa, seminal plasma, and reproductive tissues (ie, testis, epididymis, bulbourethral gland, prostate, vesicular gland, and ampulla) in horses. SAMPLE POPULATION: Seminal plasma from 17 stallions, spermatozoa from 5 stallions, and reproductive tissues from 3 stallions. PROCEDURE: Activity of GPX was determined by use of assays measuring oxidation of NADPH in the presence of exogenous glutathione, cumene hydroperoxide, and glutathione reductase. Activity of SOD-like enzymes was determined by use of the nitroblue tetrazolium assay. RESULTS: Mean GPX and SOD-like activities in seminal plasma were 1.3 +/- 0.1 nmol of NADPH oxidized/min/mg of protein and 29.2 +/- 6.6 U/mg of protein, respectively. Mean GPX activities in spermatozoa separated from seminal plasma by centrifugation and via Percoll gradient were 2.2 +/- 0.3 nmol and 6.1 +/- 1.3 nmol of NADPH oxidized/min/mg of protein, respectively. Mean SOD-like activity of spermatozoa separated by centrifugation was 58.6 +/- 22.3 U/mg of protein; SOD-like activity was not detected in Percoll-separated spermatozoa. Among reproductive tissues, the ampulla and prostate had the highest SOD-like activity, although this was not significantly different from activity in other tissues. Testes and spermatozoa from the cauda epididymis contained significantly more GPX activity than other tissues. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that although equine seminal plasma contains high SOD-like enzyme activity, spermatozoa have limited GPX and SOD-like activity. Enzymatic antioxidant activity in equine spermatozoa appears to be predominantly derived from seminal plasma adsorbed onto the plasma membrane. Removal of seminal plasma during semen processing may increase oxidative stress in equine-spermatozoa.  相似文献

This study examined the morphology and immunohistochemical features of the prostate gland in 15 captive‐reared male greater cane rat of known reproductive and medical history. Samples of the glands were taken after gross examination and routinely prepared for both histological and ultrastructural analysis. Immunohistochemistry was also carried out on paraffin‐embedded sections of the glands using rabbit polyclonal antibodies against oestrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ) and mouse monoclonal antibody for the progesterone receptor (PR). The prostate, which constitutes 0.04% of the body weight, was a paired, lobulated, brownish gland having three left and four right lobes that partly cover the pelvic urethra. Based on the amount and arrangement of the secretory epithelial folding and relative to their distances to the urethra, two histological zones, the central and peripheral, were identified. However, the epithelium of both zones was lined by predominantly simple cuboidal cells with occasional basal cells. The main ultrastructural features of these cuboidal cells were the presence of several nuclear pores on the nucleus, moderately well‐developed, short microvilli and bleb‐like apical projections, as well as inter‐cellular lacunae seen between these cells and the basal cells. The cuboidal epithelial cells also showed positive nuclear staining for ERα and ERβ but not for PR. It is however interesting that the ERα‐positive staining was more at the epithelial cells, which is uncommon. These findings highlight the peculiarities in the structure and ultrastructure as well as the unique expression of the oestrogen receptors in the prostate gland of the greater cane rat.  相似文献
