Summary Leaf proline accumulation, leaf chlorophyll stability, and germination at low osmotic potentials have previously been suggested as possible selection criteria for drought resistance in turnip rape (Brassica campestris) and rapeseed (B. napus) (Richards, 1978a). The feasibility of using these characters in a breeding program is reported. These characters were under significant genetic control and were responsive to selection. Broad sense heritabilities ranged from 40% for proline accumulation in both species to 55% for germination rate in B. campestris and 64% for chlorophyll stability in B. napus, however, narrow sense heritabilities for proline and germination were substantially lower. Their use as selection criteria for yield in a Mediteranean drought would be restricted since in B. campestris these characters were not related to yield while in B. napus only a weak association was observed between yield under drought and proline accumulation.  相似文献

Summary F1 behaviour and F2 variation in disease reaction were studied in the interspecific cross Brassica juncea x B. napus. Gene(s) for adult resistance to blackleg (Leptosphaeria maculans) were found to be present in the A genome of B. juncea and could be transferred to B. napus. Gene(s) for complete (seedling plus adult) resistance in B. juncea appeared to be located in the B genome. The chance of their transfer to the oilseed rapes (B. napus or B. campestris) would therefore seem to be remote.  相似文献

Summary Seed colour inheritance was studied in five yellow-seeded and one black-seeded B. campestris accessions. Diallel crosses between the yellow-seeded types indicated that the four var. yellow sarson accessions of Indian origin had the same genotype for seed colour but were different from the Swedish yellow-seeded breeding line. Black seed colour was dominant over yellow. The segregation patterns for seed colour in F2 (Including reciprocals) and BC1 (backcross of F1 to the yellow-seeded parent) indicated that the black seed colour was conditioned by a single dominant gene. Seed colour was mainly controlled by the maternal genotype but influenced by the interplay between the maternal and endosperm and/or embryonic genotypes. For developing yellow-seeded B. napus genotypes, resynthesized B. napus lines containing genes for yellow seed (Chen et al., 1988) were crossed with B. napus of yellow/brown seeds, or with yellow-seeded B. carinata. Yellow-seeded F2 plants were found in the crosses that involved the B. napus breeding line. However, this yellow-seeded character did not breed true up to F4. Crosses between a yellow-seeded F3 plant and a monogenomically controlled black-seeded B. napus line of resynthesized origin revealed that the black-seeded trait in the B. alboglabra genome was possibly governed by two independently dominant genes with duplicated effect. Crossability between the resynthesized B. napus lines as female and B. carinata as male was fairly high. The sterility of the F1 plants prevented further breeding progress for developing yellow-seeded B. napus by this strategy.  相似文献

Summary The expected improvement in grain yield if selection was made for plant characters measured between flowering and maturity was evaluated in populations of rapeseed (Brassica campestris and B. napus) grown in a droughted environment. Drought was commenced at flowering in each species and measurements were made on plants at the commencement of the drought stress, during the stress treatment and at crop maturity.Substantial genetic and phenotypic variation was observed in yield as well as the different morphophysiological determinants of yield. In B. campestris no single parameter was found to be a suitable alternative selection criterion to yield since the correlated responses in yield if selection was for another character was lower than if selection was for yield alone. By the use of a selection index however, joint selection for yield, as well as harvest index, 1000 seed weight and seeds per pod, was expected to be 20% more effective than direct selection for yield under drought. In the B. napus population direct selection for flowering time or for harvest index was predicted to result in a genetic advance in yield equal to or greater than that obtained by direct selection for yield, whereas joint selection for flowering time and yield should result in a 16% greater yield increase. Selection for increased yield in these populations grown in droughted conditions is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Forage rape. B. napus, is self-compatible, the work described illustrates the introgression of functional incompatibility alleles into B. napus from turnips, B. campestris, in two generations. By grading seed, produced by backcrossing turnip/rape hybrids to rape, the frequency of 2n=38 semi articial B. napus recovered, amply justifies the cytological screening involved in such breeding programmes.  相似文献

Summary Four cycles of divergent full-sib recurrent selection for the ability to germinate at low temperature were conducted in a maize (Zea mays L.) F2 population. The selection criterion was the high (H) or the low (L) value in algebraic terms of the difference (DG) between germination percentage at 9.5°C (G9.5) detected 19 days after sowing and germination percentage at 25°C (G 25) seven days after sowing; both traits were evaluated in a controlled environment (germinator). Direct and correlated responses estimated during the course of selection were in accordance with those evaluated at the end. Selection for H led to populations with higher DG values, while the reverse was noted for L; differences between H and L populations increased in successive selection cycles, though divergence tended to level off. Selection for H also resulted in higher G 9.5 (day 19), shorter germination time and more flinty kernels, while selection for L led to responses in the opposite direction as well as to a lower G 9.5 detected 37 days after sowing (i.e. at the end of germination). In contrast, responses were negligible for G 25 and varied erratically from one cycle to another for kernel weight.Abbreviations DG (G 9.5–G 25) - FS full sib - GI germination index - G 9.5 germination percentage at 9.5°C - G 25 germination percentage at 25°C - H high DG value in algebraic terms - KT kernel type - KW kernel weight - L low DG value in algebraic terms  相似文献

Summary Crossability and cytology were examined in F1, F2, B1 and hybridsplants of F1 hybrids of Brassica campestris and three wild relatives of B. oleracea, B. bourgeaui, B. cretica and B. montana, respectively. The F2 plants were obtained after self-and open pollination of the F1 hybrids. The B1 and hybrid plants were produced after the F1 hybrids backcrosses with B. campestris and crossed with B. napus, respectively. After crossing the F1 hybrids, many seeds of the F2, B1 and hybrid plants were harvested. Multivalent formation was high in the chromsome configuration for the PMCs of F2, B1 and hybrid plants, suggesting that crossing over might occur between them. Many different types of aneuploids were obtained in the progenies of the F2, B1 and hybrid plants. It is suggested that different types of normal egg cells may be produced by one-by-one or little-by-little chromosome addition. The possibility is discussed of gene transfer from B. bourgeaui, B. cretica and B. montana, to cultivated plants, B. campestris and B. napus.  相似文献

Summary Effects of temperature and daylength on the bolting of a number of B. campestris accessions were investigated both in the open and in the IVT phytotron. From the results it was concluded that low temperature and genotype are the predominant factors with respect to bolting. Daylength has rather limited influence. One cultivar bolted more than 12 weeks earlier at 10 and 14°C than at 18°C. On the other hand some cultivars did not require vernalization at all.At 14°C and short daylength, depending on genotype, the period of time between sowing and 50% bolting ranged from 8 to 30 weeks. At this temperature the stimulating effect of long day (24 h), depending again on the genotype, ranged from 0 to 4 weeks. The genotypes most resistant to bolting appeared to be the stubble turnips (B. campestris ssp. rapa). In terms of seed(ling) vernalization at 5°C the cold requirement ranged from 0 to more than 3 weeks, depending on the genotype. The required vernalization periods at 5°C can be used as a criterion in screening for resistance to bolting.  相似文献

Fusion experiments between B. napus and X-ray-treated B. tournefortii protoplasts were carried out to develop cytoplasmic male sterility (ems) in B. napus. From the regenerants, six lines containing male sterile plants were selected; five lines segregated for male sterility, but one line (25–143) was completely male-sterile from the beginning. Molecular analyses of mitochondrial (mt) and chloroplast (cp) DNA of B. napus, B. tournefortii, B. juncea and cms juncea indicated that the original cytoplasmic donor of the cms juncea-system in B. napus was a B. tournefortii form, while the B. napus genotype used for the fusion experiments had a B. campestris cytoplasm. By analysis (it regenerated plants, line 25–143 was identified as possessing mt-DNA recombined between B. campestris and B. tournefortii. with the major part derived from B. campestris. No differences were detected between epDNAs from H. campestris and from line 25—143. The other five lines were similar to B. campestris with all the probes used. The low frequency of sterile lines from the fusion experiments and the inheritance of the cms in segregating progenies are both discussed.  相似文献

Interspecific hybrids were produced from reciprocal crosses between Brassica napus (2n = 38, AACC) and B. oleracea var. alboglabra (2n = 18, CC) to introgress the zero-erucic acid alleles from B. napus into B. oleracea. The ovule culture embryo rescue technique was applied for production of F1 plants. The effects of silique age, as measured by days after pollination (DAP), and growth condition (temperature) on the efficiency of this technique was investigated. The greatest numbers of hybrids per pollination were produced under 20°/15°C (day/night) at 16 DAP for B. oleracea (♀) × B. napus crosses, while under 15°/10°C at 14 DAP for B. napus (♀) × B. oleracea crosses. Application of the ovule culture technique also increased the efficiency of BC1 (F1 × B. oleracea) hybrid production by 10-fold over in vivo seed set. The segregation of erucic acid alleles in the self-pollinated backcross generation, i.e. in BC1S1 seeds, revealed that the gametes of the F1 and BC1 plants carrying a greater number of A-genome chromosomes were more viable. This resulted in a significantly greater number of intermediate and a smaller number of high-erucic acid BC1S1 seeds.  相似文献

Summary Meiosis in 14 interspecific F1 hybrids with three chromosomal levels (triploid, tetraploid, hexaploid; 2n=28, 37 and 55) between Brassica napus L. and 2x and 4x cabbage (B. oleracea var. capitata L.) was studied. The oleracea genome from B. napus maintained close homology with the c genome of cabbage while the campestris genome of B. napus showed partial homology with the c genome contained in the hybrids. Genotypic influence on chromosome pairing was indicated. Structural chromosome differences and spontaneous chromosome breakage and reunion were suggested as causes for the abnormalities which related to the unbalance of the genotypes. The divergence of the genomes of B. napus and B. oleracea and the need for the qualification of the term secondary association were discussed.Contribution No. J. 673, Research Station, Agriculture Canada, St. Jean, Québec.  相似文献

Summary Pollen grains from selected cutivars of almond [Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D. A. Webb] and peach (Prunus persica Batsch L.) were exposed to a range of temperatures between 1°C and 34°C on a thermogradient plate. Pollen germination at temperatures below 9°C was conspicuously greater in almond than peach. Miximal germination percentages were attained at about 16°C (almond) and 23°C (peach). The two species did not differ in their capacity for pollen tube elongation over a broad range of temperatures. Maximal pollen tube elongation occurred at temperatures 5°C to 8°C higher than maximal pollen germination. Species affiliation appeared to be of much greater consequence than chilling requirement or bloom date of the sporophyte in predicting gametophytic response to temperature.  相似文献

Summary For the production of inbred lines and F1 hybrids in witloof-chicory information is wanted on characteristics such as the incompatibility system. These characteristics can only be studied properly if the influence of temperature and physiological status of the plant on pollen germination and seed production is known. Investigations were carried out with 9 self-incompatible (SI) and 6 self-compatible (SC) clones in glasshouses of the IVT phytotron at constant temperatures of 10, 14, 17, 20, 23 and 26°C. In general, in vivo pollen germination percentages were rather low after self pollination with an optimum for germination around 17–20°C. No seeds were formed at the lowest temperature (10°C) while seed production for SC clones was usually (rather) good at higher temperatures. At 26°C seed production in some clones decreased. Both pollen germination and seed production decreased at the end of the flowering period. There was a rather positive relationship at e.g. 17 and 20°C between pollen germination after selfing and seed production. When no pollen germination was observed, no seed formation occurred. When pollen grains did germinate, seed development would not necessarily occur in all cases. So this relationship only enables negative mass selection for SC.  相似文献

Summary Two crosses between Rosa hybrida L. cultivars, that fail to produce progenies by conventional means, were carried out. In one of them, total hip abscision occured seven weeks after pollination; in the other one, only 2% of the fertilized hips remained on the plants after eleven weeks. Four- and five-week-old fertilized ovules were isolated in the first cross and six-week-old embryos in the second. The ovules were cultured on six media which differed in their mineral salt and sucrose concentrations while the embryos were cultured on only one of these media and eventually cold treated for one month at 4° C before being placed in a culture room set at 23° C. The embryos that had been isolated in ovulo when they were still not visible under a binocular lens developed atypically. The embryos isolated in ovulo when they were heart-shaped and on average 0.27 mm long performed in ovulo germination on some media and/or enlargement on all of them after two weeks; after another two week culture, once isolated from the ovule, all of them germinated. The cultured isolated embryos, that were exposed to cold, enlarged and germinated more rapidly when placed at 23° C than those not exposed to cold. Furthermore, the plantlets resulting from untreated embryo germination were characterized by large cotyledons which were only partially green. These results are discussed in regard to embryogenesis, precocious germination and dormancy.  相似文献

Brassica napus L. was resynthesized through interspecific hybridization between B. alboglabra Bailey and B campestris L. with the objective or developing yellow-seeded forms of this species. For hybridization, one black-seeded form and one light brown-seeded form of B. alboglabra (a subordinate of B. oleracea) and one brown and ten yellow-seeded forms of B. campestris were chosen as parents. Crosses with B. alboglabra as the female parent were more successful than crushes with B. campestris as female. The use of the embryo rescue culture technique greatly increased the number of surviving hybrid embryos. Colchicine treatment was required for doubling the chromosome number of the amphihaploid hybrid plants. In the newly-resynthesized rape forms, the white petal of B. alboglabra was partially epistatic over the yellow petal of B. campestris. The self compatibility of B. alboglabra was hypostatic to the self incompatibility of B. campestris. The black-seeded character of B. alboglabra and the brown-seeded character of B. campestris were completely eptstatic over the yellow-seeded character of B. campestris and the light brown-seeded character of B. alboglabra. Implications of the results from this study in breeding yellow-seeded B. napus are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Fifty-six landraces of Portuguese coles (Brassica oleracea l.), representing fourteen morphotypes, were screened for resistance to Leptosphaeria maculans at the cotyledon stage. Three isolates of the pathogen belonging to three pathogenicity groups were used in the screening. The mean disease interaction phenotype of the B. oleracea landraces with the L. maculans isolates confirmed their differences in pathogenicity. When compared to pathogenicity grouping using a B. napus differential set, a different classification was observed on B. oleracea for the three L. maculans isolates, suggesting possible differences in the genetic interaction between the two plant species and the pathogen. Most of the Portuguese cole landraces were found to be susceptible to all three isolates of L. maculans, although a few have shown intermediate interaction phenotype. Some accessions, on the other hand, elicit a differential reaction with the three isolates tested, and can be further selected to be used in host differential sets or in breeding for resistance to black leg.Fifty-four landraces of Portuguese coles, representing eleven morphotypes, were also screened in the field for resistance to Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris. A good level of resistance to the bacterium was found in several of the morphotypes.Accessions of the Penca type, particularly, were identified as highly resistant. Landraces belonging to the same Portuguese cole group presented a similar range of mean interaction phenotype with the bacterium. Some Portuguese landraces of B. oleracea are potential sources for use in breeding programs for black rot resistance.  相似文献

Summary Wide hybridizations between M. arvensis and Brassica amphidiploid species (B. napus and B. juncea) were carried out in order to incorporate desirable traits of M. arvensis into Brassica crops. Crossing barriers between them were present without the use of in vitro techniques. F1 hybrids have been produced through ovary culture, when M. arvensis were used as a female parent. Higher hybrid embryo productivity (3.07 embryos per pollination) was obtained in the cross of M. arvensis x B. napus than in that of M. arvensis x B. juncea (0.79 embryos). The hybridity was confirmed by morphology, cytology, isozyme and Southern analyses. The first backcrossing progenies and open pollinated ones were produced.  相似文献

Summary When a local slow bolting variety Osaka Shirona Bansei (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis, syn. B. campestris L. ssp. pekinensis) was grown in a phytotron (25°C, 16 hours day length without chilling treatment), one third of the plants bolted and flowered. In order to clarify the different flowering responses in the variety, a progeny line (FNC) of the flowering plants was chilled for 4 different periods (0, 22, 36 and 53 days) in a chamber of 2 7°C, then transplanted to three different conditions, i.e. PHY: 25–20°C day and night temperatures, 16 hours day length, GHL: 10 25°C, 16 hours day length with supplementary light and GHN: 10 25°C, natural day length (10 15 hours). In PHY, FNC bolted and flowered with almost the same leaf numbers in all 4 different chilling treatments. This means that FNC has very low sensitivity and no requirement to low temperature for its reproductive growth. In GHN (short day length), FNC bolted very slowly. Then the bolting and flowering of FNC were promoted by both long day length and high temperature. The newly found bolting characteristics of Osaka Shirona Bansei could be applied to breed unique slow bolting Chinese cabbage (B. rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) which might be non-sensitive to low temperature and its bolting and flowering would be induced with the combination of long day length and high temperature. Using the unique variety, it might be also possible to establish a new cropping type of Chinese cabbage (late autumn sowing, spring harvest).Abbreviations PHY Phytotron, long day and high temperature condition - GHL Greenhouse, long day and medium temperature condition - GHN Greenhouse, natural (short) day and medium temperature condition - FNC A progeny line of Osaka Shirona Bansei which flowered with no chilling treatment - FC A progeny line of Osaka Shirona Bansei which flowered with chilling treatment  相似文献

Summary Atrazine resistant Brassica napus × B. oleracea F1 hybrids were backcrossed to both parental species. The backcrosses to B. napus produced seeds in both directions but results were much better when the F1 hybrid was the pollen parent. Backcrosses to B. oleracea failed completely but BC1s were rescued by embryo culture both from a tetraploid hybrid (2n = 4x = 37; A1C1CC) and sesquidiploid hybrids (2n = 3x = 8; A1C1C). Progeny of crosses between the tetraploid hybrid and B. oleracea had between 25 and 28 chromosomes. That of crosses between the sesquidiploid hybrid and B. oleracea had between 21 and 27. A few plants that had chromosome counts outside the expected range may have originated from either diploid parthenogenesis, unreduced gametes or spontaneous chromosome doubling during in vitro culture. Pollen stainability of the BC1s ranged from 0% to 91.5%. All the BC1s to B. oleracea were resistant to atrazine.  相似文献

Summary In vitro pollen germination at 10°C, 14°C and 22°C of four groups of two pure line tomato varieties was compared with their plant growth at 19°C D/10°C N under controlled environmental conditions. Generally, pollen germination was slow at 10°C but after 6 h the percentage of germination was similar to that at 22°C. Maximum germination was obtained at 14°C already after 4 h. The longest pollen tubes occurred at 22°C. The two varieties within each group differed significantly from each other for percentage of pollen germination. For one group, this difference was greater at 10°C than at 22°C. The varieties in two groups also differed significantly for pollen tube growth. These differences in pollen tube growth rate were greater at 22°C than at 10°C. There was no clear relationship between pollen germination, pollen tube growth and plant growth in any of the four pairs of varieties. The results are discussed with regard to the possibility of pollen selection at low temperature in order to improve the efficiency of breeding for growth at low temperature.  相似文献
