Urinoma (para-ureteral pseudocyst) as a consequence of trauma in a cat

A two-year-old cat was involved in a road traffic accident. Survey abdominal radiographs and urinary function were considered unremarkable. Six weeks later the cat presented with a palpable dorsal abdominal mass. Radiography revealed a soft tissue opacity mass caudal to the right kidney. Ultrasonography revealed a cyst-like structure with moderately echogenic contents, and right-sided hydronephrosis. There was no excretion of contrast medium from the right kidney after intravenous urography. Surgery revealed a disrupted right ureter adherent to the retroperitoneal mass. The mass contained serosanguineous fluid consistent with extravasated urine. Ureteronephrectomy was performed. The majority of the mass was excised and the cavity ablated. Histopathology of the excised tissue revealed a thick fibrous wall with no epithelial lining, consistent with a urinoma, which is thought to have developed as a consequence of ureteral trauma. The cat was clinically well three months postoperatively.     

Alopecia areata (pelade) in a cow

A case of alopecia areata (pelade) is described in a cow. Alopecia areata is a rare idiopathic dermatosis of cattle. It is characterized by asymptomatic, solitary or multiple, annular areas of noninflammatory alopecia. Scrapings and cultures are negative, and the diagnosis is confirmed by skin biopsies taken from early lesions, which reveal accumulations of lymphocytes around the bulbs of anagen hair follicles. There is no known effective and practical treatment for affected cattle. The dermatitis is a cosmetic problem, but does not seem to affect general health and production, and spontaneous remission may occur.     

Orbital (retrobulbar) meningioma in a Simmental cow

A 12-year-old Simmental cow was presented with a moderately firm irregular whitish mass of approximately 5 cm in diameter, occupying the right orbit. Microscopically, a poorly differentiated neoplasm was observed. The immunohistochemical panel included cytokeratins, vimentin, epithelial membrane antigen, Factor VIII, CD34, Mart-1, Melan A, smooth muscle actin, desmin, chromogranin, neuron-specific enolase, S-100 protein, and MIB-1. The neoplasm was negative for all of them, with the exception of vimentin and S-100 protein. Transmission electron microscopy revealed abundant desmosomes. These findings support the diagnosis of orbital (retrobulbar) meningioma.     

Acute lead poisoning in a young cow (case report)

Calves were treated with different doses of lead acetate to investigate the influence of chronic subclinical lead intoxication on the immune system. A seven months old heifer fell ill showing typical signs of acute lead intoxication. This animal had been fed 0.316 mg lead for three months and 5 mg Pb/kg body weight/day for 17 days afterwards. Following symptoms were observed: Derangement of the central nervous system, paresis of the left body side, motor paralysis of the chewing muscles and disturbances of swallowing activity. Furthermore tooth grinding and attempts to push against, or climb walls were seen. After a single dose (2g) Ca-EDTA the heifer recovered progressively in 18 days.     

Ocular lymphangiosarcoma in a cow.

Ocular lymphangiosarcoma was diagnosed in a Holstein cow with a progressively enlarging limbal mass. The cow was treated by exenteration. The cow survived for 2 years without clinical signs of recurrence. Lymphangiosarcoma is a vascular neoplasm that rarely has been reported in domestic animals. In other species, it has a high rate of metastasis and is associated with poor long-term survival.     

Listeriosis in a Holstein cow.

Bovine listeriosis is a sporadie bacterial infection most commonly manifested by encephalitis or meningoencephalitis in adult animals. Cattle fed poorly fermented haylage or corn silage are at increased risk. Mortality is high without early antibiotic and supportive therapy. Listeria monocytogenes can affect many species and is a public health concern.     

Mixed thymoma in a cow.

A neoplastic mass measuring 25 x 8 x 3 cm was found in the mediastinum of a 10-year-old Holstein cow. The neoplasm was encapsulated, multilobulated, and cystic. Several firm adhesions were present between the neoplasm and the right cranial lung lobe and the ipsilateral side of the pericardial sac. Under microscopic examination, the neoplasm was characterized by solid sheets of spindle epithelial cells (pancytokeratin and high molecular weight cytokeratin positive) subdivided by fibrous trabeculae. Numerous individualized or small aggregates of mature T-cell (CD3 positive) lymphocytes were scattered throughout the neoplastic cell population. Based on the gross, histologic, and immunohistochemical findings, the neoplasm was diagnosed as a mixed thymoma.     

Intestinal leiomyoma in a cow.

A 10-year-old white Fulani Bunaji cow with clinical signs of ruminal stasis and melaena, was euthanised following discovery of a neoplasm in the spiral colon. Histopathological examination revealed a leiomyoma.
