380 whitefish (Coregonus sp.) and 260 vendace (Coregonus albula L.) were studied from Lake Yli-Kitka in northeastern Finland during 1980-1982. 33% of the whitefish and 38.5% of the vendace were infected with Phyllodistomum umblae (Fabricius, 1780), the average intensity of infection being 4.2 and 2.3 per infected fish, respectively. No clear seasonality was observed in either the prevalence and intensity of infection or in the level of maturation and the length of P. umblae in both fish species, which points to a continuous invasion and maturation of these trematodes. The prevalence and intensity of P. umblae infection was highest in the middle-sized whitefish. Similar results were obtained when the mean number of worms per fish and the level of overdispersion (S2/x) are plotted against the length of the fish. With regard to vendace the prevalence and intensity of infection per infected fish and per fish studied increased as the fish length increased: only the variance-to-mean ratio remained constantly low. Overdispersion indices (S2/x) revealed that in the whitefish P. umblae is more overdispersed than in vendace when studied using data from seasonal periods with size-groups as homogenously infected as possible. The negative binomial distribution gave a good fit in the case of vendace and with one exception also for whitefish, and the values of parameter k are well within the limits most often found in parasitological studies.  相似文献

From May 1993 to April 1995, the seasonal occurrence of metacestodes of Neogryporhynchus cheilancristrotus (Wedl, 1855) (Cyclophyllidea: Dilepididae) in its second intermediate host, the blue bream Abramis ballerus (L.) was studied monthly in the Oder River on the borders of Germany and Poland. Based on the parasite specimens found, detailed data on their morphometrics are presented. The metacestodes occurred in the blue bream intestine throughout the year (overall prevalence 27% and intensity 1-56 (mean 4.8) metacestodes per infected fish). Increased prevalences and mean intensities of infection were noted from March to June and November to December indicating that spring, late autumn and early winter are the main periods of new infections.  相似文献

The extent of pesticide contamination of sport fish from lakes and reservoirs in Indiana is described. Environmental and water quality factors significantly influenced the concentration of pesticides in fish. The influence of these factors was different between natural lakes and humanmade reservoirs. Largmouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), sunfish (Lepomis sp), and bullheads (Ictalurus sp.) were collected and analyzed for dieldrin, aldrin, DDT, DDE, heptachlor, and heptachlor epoxide. The collections and concurrent lake surveys were made during 1972-73. Soil and decaying plant particles appeared to influence the levels of dieldrin and sigma DDT taken up by largemouth bass. Strong correlations were observed between lake turbidity and true color and residue levels in the fish. Residue concentrations were also observed to vary between fish species, the seasons of the year, and watershed land uses.  相似文献

Two squirrels aged 16 weeks and three muskrats aged 24 weeks were subcutaneously infected with a dose of 400 SMicLD50 of the extraneurally passaged "236" strain of Tahyna virus. Viremia was detected in one squirrel (48 and 96 hours post infection) and in two muskrats (24 and 48 hours p.i.). Seroconversion was demonstrated by plaque-reduction neutralization test (PRNT) 21 days p.i. in all animals.  相似文献

A part of the life cycle of Proteocephalus neglectus La Rue, 1911, a parasite of trout, starting from release of eggs from mature parasites into water, to the early phase of development in the definitive host, was studied under experimental conditions. Special regard has been paid to development in the intermediate host, copepod Cyclops strenuus. Some oncospheres in eggs kept in water at 5 and 10 degrees C remained infective for 20-25 days. The percentage of infected copepods depended on the length of their contact with parasite eggs. Cestode larvae (cercoscoleces) were formed in the intermediate host on days 8-10 p.i. at the temperatures of 21-22 degrees C, on days 18-21 at 15 degrees C, on days 24-28 at 10 degrees C, and on days 59-65 at 6 degrees C. Most larvae, including infective cercoscoleces, were localized in the cephalothorax of the intermediate host, particularly in its first segment. This localization did not change during their development. The infectivity of cercoscoleces was verified by experimental infection of Salmo gairdneri fry. The development of the cestode in this definitive host was observed for 17 days after infection at 10 degrees C. The finding of P. neglectus cereoscoleces in fish of the families Cottidae and Cyprinidae on day 2 after experimental infection indicates that these larvae can survive for a short time in atypical fish hosts.  相似文献

An experimental infection with the microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi Levaditi, Nicolau et Schoen, 1923 was studied using a model of immunocompetent BALB/c mice and immunodeficient SCID mice. The course of infection after intraperitoneal inoculation of E. cuniculi spores was evaluated using the presence of spores in peritoneal macrophages as a criterion. First significant decrease in the proportion of infected cells was recorded on day 9 post infection (p.i.) in BALB/c mice. From day 14 p.i. no spores were observed in macrophages from BALB/c mice, while the number of infected macrophages from SCID mice increased until the death of the mice. The natural killer (NK) cell activity of mouse splenocytes was compared with the production of interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) by these cells. While in BALB/c mice NK activity peaked on days 9 and 14 p.i., in SCID mice the marked increase of NK activity was recorded close before death of mice, on day 21 p.i. in correlation with the production of IFN-gamma. Production of specific antibodies was demonstrated from day 9 p.i. in sera from BALB/c mice. It is concluded that intraperitoneal infection of SCID mice with spores of E. cuniculi results in the marked increase in the number of peritoneal exudate cells and in the percentage of infected cells close before death of mice. Neither high activity of NK cells nor increased production of IFN-gamma are sufficient for the recovery of SCID mice from an E. cuniculi infection.  相似文献

Caryospora duszynskii Upton, Current et Barnard, 1984 was successfully transmitted to snakes of the genus Elaphe by feeding them previously infected mice. Fifty thousand oocysts were orally administered to two mouse strains, BALB/c and Crl:CD-1(ICR)BR, which were subsequently fed to captive-born coccidia-free Elaphe guttata (L.) in two respective independent experiments. Both E. guttata expelled C. duszynskii oocysts in their faeces, beginning on day 18 and 26 post infection (p.i.) and shed oocysts continuously through the end of the experiment, day 230 and 135 p.i., respectively. There were no parasitic stages or lesions in mice, as revealed by histological examination. Experiments proved that rodents serve as paratenic hosts for C. duszynskii. In summary we discuss the life-cycle strategies of Caryospora spp. in reptiles and present three general modes of their development.  相似文献

The infection with Myxobolus intimus Zaika, 1965 in the gills of the roach Rutilus rutilus (L.) from Lake Balaton was recorded in 28 out of the 39 fish examined. Developing and mature plasmodia were detected on the gills exclusively in the spring. The Myxobolus intimus infection was found only in 2- to 3-year-old fish. In histological sections, young plasmodia were found in capillaries of the secondary lamellae. More mature, round plasmodia 0.4-0.6 mm in diameter, deformed the respiratory lamellae. The intraoligochaete development of M. intimus was studied in experimentally infected oligochaetes. In two experiments, uninfected Tubifex tubifex Müller and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Claparède) were exposed to mature myxospores of M. intimus. In both experiments, typical triactinospores developed in T. tubifex specimens but no infection was found in L. hoffmeisteri. In semithin sections, developmental stages, pansporocysts and actinospores, were found within the proliferated gut epithelium of T. tubifex. Triactinospores were first released from oligochaetes 37 and 58 days after initial exposure in the two experiments, respectively. Each triactinospore had three pyriform polar capsules and a cylindrical sporoplasm with 32 secondary cells. The spore body joined the 3 caudal projections with a moderately long style.  相似文献

Immune response of rabbits experimentally infected with Ascaris suum was studied by indirect haemagglutination method. The animals were infected with the doses of 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 infective eggs per animal. Positive reactions were observed from days 5-11 p.i., maximum reactions on days 11-19 p.i. A reinfection with the same doses (1x or 2x after 35 and 65 days) increased the antibody titre. The strongest individual reaction was recorded on day 19 p.i. in the group infected with the highest dose (titre 1 : 4096). The increased antibody titres persisted til the end of the experiment (82th day p.i.) in all groups.  相似文献

Crepidostomum spp. were studied from 417 whitefish (Coregonus acronius Rapp, 1854), 220 vendace (Coregonus albula L.) and 38 brown trout (Salmo trutta m. lacustris (L.)) from Lake Yli-Kitka in northeastern Finland during 1980-1983.12.7% of the whitefish were infected with Crepidostomum with a mean intensity of 4.6 worms per infected fish. The species involvedare C. farionis (Müller, 1784) and Crepidostomum wikgreni Gibson et Valtonen, 1988, which differed from C. farionis in the number and size of the eggs. Both types were encountered in the gall-bladder and intestine, but were unable to be distinguished as immature stages. 21% of the brown trout harboured C. farionis in the intestine with a mean number of 1.5 worms per infected fish. Two C. farionis specimens occurred also in the intestine of one vendace. Whitefish smaller than 150 mm did not harbour Crepidostomum specimens, but in bigger fish the prevalence and the mean intensity of infection increased to a certain limit as the fish got larger. The prevalence of Crepidostomum infection also clearly increased during the three seasons in the three size-groups studied. The seasonal pattern of Crepidostomum in whitefish of the size greater than or equal to 150 mm was variable in that the lowest values, both in the prevalence and mean intensity of infection, occurred between September and December in 1980 and between April and August in 1982. Reinvasion was found throughout the year, although the main recruitment occurred during autumn and early winter. Eggs matured between late spring and early autumn. The smallest worms occurred mainly in the gall-bladder, and most of the gravid specimens were located in the intestine. Both the variance-to-mean ratio and the low values of the parameter k of the fitted negative binomial distribution reveal the Crepidostomum specimens are overdispersed in the whitefish of Lake Yli-Kitka.  相似文献

This study elucidates the activity of certain plants’ methanol extract: Anagallis arvensis, Solanum nigrum (green fruits), Chenopodium ambrosioides, Calendula officinalis and Sesbania sesban, on the infectivity of S. mansoni cercariae to albino mice. Then, some parasitological parameters, e.g. the worm load/mouse, number of ova/g tissue in liver and intestine and the developmental stages of ova in the small intestinal wall (Oogram) of infected mice were determined. In addition, certain biochemical parameters of serum from infected mice (total protein, albumin, the activities of AlT, AsT, AcP and AkP enzymes) were, also, recorded.The results showed that exposure of S. mansoni cercariae for 30 min to the tested plants’ methanol extract before mice infection has a higher suppressive effect on their infectivity to albino mice then those exposed to this extract during mice infection. The number of worms recovered/infected mouse and the number of ova/g tissue from liver and intestine of mice groups infected with cercariae exposed to the tested plants’ methanol extract either pre- or during mice infection were less than those of infected control groups (e.g. the reduction rates of worm load/mouse and number of ova/g tissue in the intestine were 46.1% and 76.8%, respectively, for mice infected with cercariae exposed to 5 ppm of A. arvensis during mice infection).The results, also, indicated that exposing S. mansoni cercariae to methanol extract of the experimental plants either pre- or during mice infection reduced the activities of the enzymes AlT, AsT, AcP and AkP that were elevated in mice infected with untreated cercariae, meanwhile, the concentrations of total protein and albumin were increased in the serum of mice infected with these treated cercariae in comparison with those of mice group infected with untreated cercariae.  相似文献

The terminal phase of the migration of Trichobilharzia regenti Horák, Kolárová et Dvorák, 1998 in the definitive host (Anas platyrhynchos f. domestica) was studied 12-27 days post infection (p.i.). Brain meninges were the last part of the nervous system where the worms were detected before their occurrence in the nasal cavity. In meninges, the parasites started to feed on red blood cells. Then the worms occurred in the nasal mucosa 14-25 days p.i. and the first immature eggs appeared 15 days p.i. The fully developed miracidia were recorded in the eggs from 17 days p.i. and freely in the nasal mucosa 19 days p.i. Infiltrates of lymphocytes, later also eosinophils and heterophils around the eggs and free miracidia, were observed from 15 and 19 days p.i., respectively. The haemorrhages occurring from 17 days p.i., and the granulomas with lymphocytes, eosinophils and heterophils forming around the eggs from 22 days p.i. were the most apparent pathological changes of nasal tissue.  相似文献

The development of the nematode Spinitectus inermis (Zeder, 1800), a parasite of the stomach of eels, Anguilla anguilla (L.) in Europe, was experimentally studied. Mayfly nymphs Caenis macrura, Ecdyonurus dispar, Heptagenia sulphurea, Potamanthus luteus and Seratella ignita from Portugal and the Czech Republic were found to serve as experimental intermediate hosts. After ingestion of the nematode eggs by the mayfly nymphs, the toothed first-stage larvae were released and penetrated into the body cavity of the intermediate host. There they moulted twice (on day 4 and 6 post infection [p.i.] at water temperatures of 20-25 degrees C), attaining the third infective stage. The definitive host, A. anguilla, undoubtedly acquires infection by feeding on mayfly nymphs harbouring infective-stage larvae. In an experimentally infected eel, the fourth-stage larva undergoing the third moult was observed 28 days p.i. at water temperature of 20 degrees C. The larval stages, including moulting forms, are described and illustrated. The prepatent period of S. inermis is estimated to be about two months.  相似文献

Two wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were subcutaneously infected with a dose of 2.6 dex. i.c. LD50/0.02 ml of extraneurally passaged Tahyna virus strain "236". During the 24-72 hours interval p.i. viremia was demonstrated in both animals ranging from 1.0 to 3.42 dex. i.e. LD50/0.02. Mosquitoes Aedes vexans, which had fed on them, transmitted the virus to one of three other rabbits. During 24-96 hours interval after terminated feeding of infectious mosquitoes viremia was detected in this animal ranging from 0.49 to 4.08 dex i.c. LD50/0.02 ml. Seroconversion was revealed by means of plaque reduction neutralization test 11 days after infection.  相似文献

The occurrence of two palearctic Proteocephalus species, P. percae and P. cernuae, in the perch and ruff, respectively, was studied in two areas of northern Finland in 1977-1983. In the Bothnian Bay, 243 perch (Perca fluviatilis) and 406 ruff (Gymnocephalus cernuus) were studied, of which 60% and 40%, respectively, were infected, while in Lake Yli-Kitka the prevalences were 10% in 213 perch and 24% in 307 ruff. Higher mean intensities of infection were found in the Bothnian Bay fish than in those from the lake, but no infected fish had as many as 10 worms. Proteocephalus infection in the perch and ruff did not vary significantly according to the length of the fish in either area, except that no P. percae were found in perch smaller than 70 mm in the lake. There was a prominent seasonal variation in the occurrence of P. cernuae in the ruff in both areas, but especially in the lake, where no proteocephalids were found in the ruff in July-October. Overlapping of generations was evident in P. percae in the sea perch, although only by virtue of the lack of mature worms at the end of the summer. Some mature proteocephalids were also found in winter in both fish species in the sea and in the ruff of the lake. The higher mean intensity values in winter, especially in P. cernuae infection in the sea ruff, may be explained partly by the active feeding of the ruff at this time in spite of very low water temperatures. Feeding activity in the perch is lower in the winter, and hence a lower mean intensity of P. percae infection was seen especially in the lake material at that time.  相似文献

Clearcutting and deforestation lead to increased erosion, increased water temperature, altered water chemistry, and modified watershed hydrology in aquatic systems. Effects on biological organisms have been documented for phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, and fish. In this study, parasites of the northern redbelly dace, Phoxinus eos (Cope), were examined from an experimental area consisting of headwater lakes and their watersheds in the boreal forest of Ontario, Canada prior to and after clearcutting around the lakes. Catchments of two lakes were heavily, and one lake partially, clearcut in 1996, and that of a fourth lake was untouched. In 1993, three years prior to clearcutting, five taxa of parasites, including the monogeneans Dactylogyrus sp. and Gyrodactylus sp., metacercaria of the digenean Clinostomum complanatum (Rudolphi, 1819), the nematode Rhabdochona canadensis Moravec et Arai, 1971 and the myxozoan Myxobolus sp. were found in or on northern redbelly dace. In 1998, two years after clearcutting, eight taxa were found on northern redbelly dace, including all of the above plus the digeneans Allocreadium sp. and Ornithodiplostomum ptychocheilus (Faust, 1917) and the copepod Ergasilus lizae Kr?yer, 1863. Mean infracommunity species richness and the maximum number of species per fish were higher in the control and partially cut lake than in the heavily logged lakes. Uninfected fish were found in the heavily cut lakes, but not in the other lakes. Thus, disturbance may reduce parasite infracommunity complexity. Among individual parasite species, R. canadensis was absent from the two most heavily clearcut lakes and abundant in the two other lakes in 1998. Clearcutting may have affected the abundance of certain invertebrates in these lakes, in particular the mayflies that serve as intermediate hosts for R. canadensis. The parasites Allocreadium sp., O. ptychocheilus, and E. lizae have not been previously reported in or on northern redbelly dace.  相似文献

The development of the tapeworm Khawia sinensis has been observed up to the stage of sexually mature parasites releasing eggs in an experimentally infected definitive host (Cyprinus carpio) at 15-16 degrees C. Juvenile, maturing, adult and gravid tapeworms were found 2-12, 19-24, 36-62, and 78-91 days post infection, respectively. No apparent size difference between tapeworms from carp kept at 20-22 degrees C, examined 1-16 days post infection, and those from 15-16 degrees C was observed. In naturally infected and fed carp, kept at 21-22 degrees C, some tapeworms survived till the end of experiment (44 days) while in unfed fish they survived only 15 days from the beginning of experiment.  相似文献

In this study we examine differences in the occurrence of life history stages of the destructive fish ectoparasite Argulus foliaceus (L., 1758) on eight fish species (stickleback, rudd, roach, gudgeon, bream, tench, crucian carp and common carp) sampled from a mixed-species recreational fishing lake on nine occasions during late spring and summer. Total numbers ofA. foliaceus, as well as the number of larval, juvenile and adult parasite stages, from each fish were recorded along with the fish species. Lice generally exhibited an aggregated distribution approximating a negative binomial distribution. Significant differences in the prevalence, intensity and intensity frequency distribution were observed between life history stages and between host species. In general, all life history stages of A. foliaceus exhibited an over-dispersed distribution. However, larval lice did show some degree of aggregation particularly within the stickleback samples. Infection data for parasite larval stages suggested that sticklebacks are more likely to be infected than other host species. For adult lice, however, carp appeared to be the main host. We propose that A. foliaceus infection characteristics are predominantly determined by the level of host exposure to the parasite and its life history stages (larval, juvenile and adult) rather than by an innate difference in host susceptibility related to individual host factors such as immune responses. We conclude that host exposure is determined by the parasite-host behavioural interplay related to species-specific ecology and behavioural traits such as microhabitat preference and normal swimming speed.  相似文献

Laboratory and glasshouse experiments demonstrated that priming of carrot seeds infected with Alternaria dauci did not affect the rate of transmission of the pathogen. Iprodione applied as a dust to unprimed, infected seeds at 5 ga.i. per kg seed effectively reduced disease transmission. Iprodione (0.1% a.i.) or thiram (0.1% a.i.) added in polyethylene glycol (PEG; filter paper or bubble-column priming systems) only partially reduced infection. Further dusting of the primed and dried seeds with iprodione, or alternatively application of that fungicide in a polymer film coat as the final stage in the process engineering of carrot seeds, was necessary to achieve complete control. The addition of thiram in the priming fluid, followed by an application of iprodione to the primed and dried seeds, improved the emergence and yield of carrots in the field.  相似文献

Brassica rapa can be infected with Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) as a result of manual inoculation or aphid transmission, but infected plants have not been found in the field. In this study, B. rapa plants grown from seed collected from two field sites in southern England were mechanically inoculated with one of two distinct isolates (pathotypes) of TuMV under glasshouse conditions. These had either been isolated from Brassica oleracea growing wild in Wales, (GBR 83, pathotype 3) or Dorset (GBR 98, pathotype 1). Use of ELISA as an index of infection in manually inoculated B. rapa showed that although seed provenance had a small effect on the proportion of plants infected, the biggest factor was the virus isolate. Both virus isolates infected both lines of B. rapa , but invaded at different rates, although both resulted in easily discernible symptoms. The severity of symptoms was not related to amounts of virus in the infected plants. A significantly greater proportion of plants were infected with GBR 83 at 45 days post-inoculation (d.p.i.) than GBR 98. but GBR 98 caused significantly more severe and obvious symptoms as well as greater mortality at 119 d.p.i., in plants from both sites than GBR 83.  相似文献
