The structure and possible functions of respiratory secretions are reviewed. In the equine, goblet (mucus producing) cells are the main source but little information is available on the volume or composition of equine respiratory secretions. Airway mucus has complex and incompletely understood physical characteristics which can be partially assessed by a wide range of in vitro and biological techniques. The complex relationship between mucus structure and its propulsion by the airway cilia are discussed, both in health and with pulmonary disease. Mucokinesis in the horse has been assessed visually, by bronchoscopically observing intratracheal markers and also by the use of radiographic and radioactive markers. All techniques indicate a tracheal mucus velocity of approximately 20 mm/min. A large number of mucokinetic agents have been claimed therapeutically to increase mucokinesis, using a range of mechanisms. These include mucus diluents, surface acting agents, mucolytics, bronchomucotropic agents, ciliary augmentors and broncho-dilators. A critical review of the literature shows that the bronchodilator clenbuterol is the most effective mucokinetic agent assessed to date in the equine.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the major salivary glands in the southern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor) histologically and histochemically. Five adult males were included in this study. The results showed that anatomically the shape of the parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands of the Erinaceus concolor was respectively almost pear, elliptical to pyramidal and oval. Histologically, the parotid gland had serous acini and secretory cells showed negative reaction to alcian blue (AB) (pH = 2.5) and negative response to aldehyde fuchsin (AF), methylene blue (MB) and PAS stains. The submandibular gland was a mixed gland of mucous and serous acini. The mucous acini were strongly positive for PAS, AB, MB and AF. However, serous acini were week for PAS and negative against AB, MB and AF stains. The sublingual gland was purely composed of mucous acini. The mucous acini of the sublingual gland were strongly positives for PAS, AB and MB methods. While their reaction to the AF staining was negative. In conclusion, the histological and histochemical observations of the major salivary glands of the southern white-breasted hedgehog (E. concolor) indicated that these glands shown similarities and some special different histochemical features as compared to other mammalian species.  相似文献

The prenatal development of the cat's mandibular and parotid gland was examined by means of serial section of 36 cat embryos at 14–62 days of development. Both glands were excised from the epithelium of the primitive oral cavity and branched up to day 36 of the branching phase into a specific connective tissue. This tissue contained besides fine collagenous fibres, a high amount of proteoglycans. In the subsequent separation phase, ducts and acini differentiated themselves in primitive lobules which were separated by connective tissue. In the prenatal differentiation phase, from about day 50 up to birth, intercalated ducts and striated ducts were formed. In the acini, mucous and serous cells contained different amounts of complex carbohydrates. This secretory component changed shortly before birth.  相似文献

One-day-old turkeys were infected intranasally with Bordetella avium, and tracheas were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy at 1 to 5 weeks post-inoculation (PI). The predominant ultrastructural lesions were progressive loss of ciliated epithelium with replacement by nonciliated cells, bacterial colonization of ciliated cells, membrane-bound crystalline inclusions in cytoplasma of epithelial cells, depletion of mucous granules, and distortion of tracheal rings and the mucosal surface. Tracheal surface exudates consisted of mucus, necrotic cells, heterophils, and fibrin. Ciliated cells were replaced by immature cuboidal cells characterized by abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum with small numbers of electron-dense mucous granules in the apical cytoplasm. Bacterial surfaces were rough and contained numerous pleomorphic, knob-like structures, 20-50 nm in diameter. Other changes included enlarged mucosal gland openings, cell extrusion marks, pleomorphic microvilli, and cells with small numbers of short cilia.  相似文献

Complex carbohydrates were examined in glandular cells of the horse duodenal gland by using lectin histochemical techniques. In the horse, the duodenal gland was distributed in the area from the uppermost part of the small intestine to a point about 6m caudal to the pylorus. It consisted of two types of cells, mucous and serous cells. The former was found in glands distributed almost all over this part, but the latter was present in glands distributed restrictedly to the uppermost part of the small intestine at a point about 10 cm caudal to the pylorus. The cytoplasm of the mucous cell contained neutral glycoproteins with different saccharide residues as alpha-D-mannose, N-acetyl-beta (1----4)-D-glucosamine, galactose, alpha-galactose, alpha-N-acetylglucosamine, beta-D-Gal (1----3)-D-GalNAc, alpha-L-fucose and sialic acid. On the other hand, the serous cell contained neutral and acid glycoproteins with different residues such as alpha-D-mannose, alpha-D-glucose, beta-D-galactose(1----3)-D-N-acetylgalactose, alpha-L-fucose, N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosamine, N-acetyl-beta (1----4)-D-glucosamine, galactose, alpha-galactose, alpha-N-acetylglucosamine and sialic acid. It is also elucidated in the present study that lipase, an enzyme for digestion, is contained in the serous cell of the equine duodenal gland.  相似文献

The macroscopic and light microscopic structure of the vesicular and bulbourethral glands was investigated in male pigs, which were castrated early in life and examined at slaughter weight. The vesicular glands showed a constant morphological pattern while in the bulbourethral glands an individual variation was observed in the number of mucous acini and the amount of interstitial tissue. In spite of this variation in the normal structure, the latter gland as well as the vesicular gland showed reliable changes after treatment with diethylstilboestrol.  相似文献

Equine tracheal lesions have been associated with the orotracheal intubation procedure. These lesions may occur because of differences in the dimensions of the endotracheal tube and the trachea. The importance of the dimensions of the trachea for studies on respiratory mechanics and the lesions produced by the endotracheal tubes encouraged us to determine the size of trachea of the Thoroughbred horse. This study determined and compared the length and internal diameters of the tracheas from 59 Thoroughbred horses, 35 males and 34 females, weighing between 400 kg and 500 kg, and free of signs of respiratory or cardiopulmonary diseases. The tracheas were removed from the horses between 2 and 12 hours after death. The internal diameters were measured in tracheal rings one, twenty, forty and the last before the carina. The length of each trachea was measured in both the normal and extended state. The number of tracheal rings was also determined. In the unstretched trachea, the width of the last tracheal ring and the number of tracheal rings were significantly greater in males than females. The results of this study provide information for better design and manufacturing of endotracheal tubes and as basic information for further studies on equine respiratory mechanics.  相似文献

Between 1981 and 1986, permanent tracheostomy was performed in 46 ponies and 1 adult Quarter Horse. Tracheostomies of 19 ponies and the horse were examined in June 1986 and evaluated for vertical length of stomal orifice (mean = 25.0 +/- 4.7 mm in the ponies and 55 mm in the horse), degree of tracheal obstruction (0/20), regrowth and apposition of epidermis (3/20), and whether or not stomal airflow occurred with nasal occlusion (20/20). In addition, the animals were evaluated to determine whether dyspnea developed during exercise. Records of 27 ponies were evaluated. Six of the 27 were not dyspneic with exercise at their last routine physical examination. Twenty-one ponies had died or had been euthanatized, but only 5 of these deaths were attributed to complications associated with the respiratory tract; 3 ponies had collapsing tracheas and 2 had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The permanent tracheostomy technique provided a functional and cosmetic airway and was associated with a low rate of complications.  相似文献

Two rare equine cutaneous neoplasms, an apocrine gland adenocarcinoma and a carcinosarcoma were diagnosed in a 17-year-old pony and a 14-year-old mare, respectively. The apocrine gland adenocarcinoma was present on the prepuce. Histologically, papillary projections of low cuboidal to columnar epithelial cells were generally well differentiated, and surrounded dilated acini. Stromal invasion was present, but vascular and lymphatic invasion was not seen. The carcinosarcoma was present in the right flank of the mare. Two discrete cell populations were characterized histologically. One portion of the mass was composed of elongated, loosely arranged mesenchymatous cells; the second population consisted of dense sheets of pleomorphic, basophilic cells forming irregular acini.  相似文献

The autonomic innervation of the mammalian respiratory system is complex, and involves a wide variety of peptide and non-peptide neurotransmitters which will have an important role in normal laryngeal function and the response to disease. This innervation has been partially described in the horse airway and lung, but there is no information on the equine larynx. This paper describes the expression and distribution of nerve fibres immunoreactive for vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), substance P (SP) and the adrenergic enzymatic marker dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBetaH) in the mucosa of the equine larynx. The overall relative density of nerve fibres immunoreactive for the different antigens was VIP>CGRP>SP>DBetaH. There were differences in the distribution of nerve fibre types, although each antigen was found in nerve fibres adjacent to blood vessels and mucous glands. VIP -like immunoreactivity (VIP -Li) was particularly extensive in association with mucous glands. SP - and CGRP -like immunoreactivity (SP -Li, CGRP -Li) were also seen close to the epithelium, with occasional nerve fibres coursing beneath and between the epithelial cells. Fragments of SP -Li and CGRP -Li fibres were also present in large nerve fibre bundles and ganglionic cell clusters, but not in the neurons themselves. The density of nerve fibres immunoreactive for DBetaH was very low and restricted to blood vessels and mucous glands. There was marked variation in the density of nerve fibres at the different sites, with the greatest density, particularly for VIP, over the arytenoid cartilage. Immunoreactive nerve fibres were less plentiful over the epiglottis, and the density of all types of nerve fibres was low over the cricoid cartilage. Overall VIP -Li nerve fibres were the most plentiful.  相似文献

Histology of trachea of camel (Camelus dromedarius) was studied using light, scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Tissue samples taken from the trachea (proximal, middle and distal part) were routinely prepared for histology (LM, EM) and stained with haematoxylin and eosin, Van Giesson (VG), Alcian blue, Periodic acid schiff (PAS), Masson's trichrome (MT), Verhof, PAS-VG and PAS-MT. The trachea of camel consists of 66-75 incomplete cartilaginous rings of hyaline. The lamina epithelium is composed of pseudostratified-ciliated columnar epithelium with many goblet cells. Submucosal layers were loose connective tissue with many elastic fibres. The mucosal and submucosal layers were 517.2 +/- 61.6 microm (n = 20) thick. Submucosal glands were tubuloalveolar with mucous (acidic and neutral) secretions. Trachealis muscle was attached to the inside sheet of tracheal cartilage. Ultrastructural studies showed that surface epithelium is pseudostratified with mucus-producing goblet cells, ciliated and basal cells, similar to other mammals. The ciliated cells contained many mitochondria, oval nucleus and many big granules. In scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies, viscoelastic layers were observed on the epithelial surface of trachea, and there were highly condensed cilia under this layer.  相似文献

Tracheal mucociliary clearance was determined in horses by measuring the rostrad transport of the radiopharmaceutical 99mtechnetium-sulphur colloid following deposition on the tracheal epithelium by intratracheal injection. The effects of head position (head elevated to normal standing position vs head lowered) and of accumulated purulent secretions on tracheal mucociliary clearance were evaluated for the first time in the horse. In normal horses tracheal mucociliary clearance was greatly accelerated by lowering the head so that the cranial trachea was lower than the caudal trachea. Horses confined with their heads elevated for 24 hours developed an accumulation of purulent airway secretions (and associated increased numbers of bacteria) in the lower respiratory tract and showed a decrease in tracheal mucociliary clearance when compared with their previously measured rate when the lower airway contained only normal secretions. These findings have implications for management practices where horses are prevented from lowering their heads, such as transportation and cross-tying, which may therefore contribute to lower respiratory tract disease in horses.  相似文献

Antibodies in sera and respiratory secretions from chickens infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Chickens intratracheally inoculated with 10(5) cells of MG showed a correlation between severity of tracheal lesions and extent of MG colonization in the tracheas in the first 3 weeks postinoculation. Antibody titers in tracheal washings (TWs) of the infected chickens increased during this phase. Thereafter, isolation of MG from the trachea decreased sharply, and there was a concomitant decrease in tracheal lesion scores. At 5 weeks postinfection, the chickens that recovered from the infection exhibited a consistent presence of antibodies in TWs. Chickens reexposed had a faster rate of MG elimination and substantially less severe inflammatory lesions in the tracheas than chickens observed after the first exposure. These findings suggest a possible role of antibodies of the respiratory secretions in resistance to MG. The ELISA was a sensitive and reliable test to detect a minute amount of antibodies in the secretions.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy, light microscopy, and morphometric analyses were used to examine the morphology of the tunica mucosa-tela submucosa of the cervical, thoracic, and abdominal parts of the esophagus of healthy dogs from birth to 337 days of age from 3 litters of dogs whelped and reared under controlled conditions. Apart from the absence of a lamina muscularis mucosae from the cervical part of the esophagus of all dogs examined, little regional variation was detected. However, morphologic variation associated with age was observed. The number and complexity of microplicae on surface epithelial cells, as observed with the scanning electron microscope, increased with age, particularly between 1-day-old and 21-day-old dogs. Although scanning electron microscopy revealed typical duct openings from the submucosal glands in 1-day-old dogs, light microscopy revealed few functional glands. These glands gradually developed into a complex strata of tubules and acini during the time that secretory activity and the volume fraction of the tunica mucosa-tela submucosa occupied by glands increased with age. The presence of ciliated cells in the esophagus of 1-day-old dogs was apparent with scanning electron and light microscopes. Ciliated cells were always most abundant in the abdominal part of the esophagus. Finally, morphometric analyses revealed a significant increase in epithelial and connective tissue compartment thicknesses, as well as a marked increase in the volume fraction occupied by glands between 1 day and 161 days after dogs were whelped. A smaller decrease in all 3 measures occurred between 161 and 337 days after the dogs were whelped.  相似文献

Autoradiography with [125I]-Bolton Hunter substance P ([I]-BHSP) was used to detect substance P binding sites in the equine lung. Specific [I]-BHSP binding sites were very dense over small bronchial vessels, tracheobronchial glands and airway epithelium in large and small airways. The density of [I]-BHSP binding sites over airway smooth muscle was much lower than in the preceding tissues. Competition with an excess of either a specific neurokinin 1 receptor agonist, or a specific neurokinin 2 receptor agonist indicated that most specific [I]-BHSP binding sites in the equine lung represent neurokinin 1 receptors. The receptor-mediated effects of substance P in the equine lung are most likely to involve regulation of vascular tone and airway secretions based upon the density of specific [I]-BHSP binding sites in these tissues. Activation of intrapulmonary afferent nerves containing Substance P by noxious stimuli such as inhaled allergens or irritants may lead to increased mucus secretion and decreased airway diameter due to vascular congestion.  相似文献

In this study, the histo-anatomy of the accessory reproductive glands of the Anatolian souslik (Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) is investigated, using 102 males of the vouchers which were captured from central Anatolia and eastern Mediterranean regions. Averages of measurements taken from each part of the accessory reproductive glands were as follows: length of vesicular gland [right: 3.96 (+/-0.48) mm; left: 3.70 (+/-0.55) mm]; prostate gland [length: 2.55 (+/-0.38) mm; width: 2.63 (+/-0.45) mm]; length of bulbourethral gland [right: 2.32 (+/-0.33) mm; left: 2.37 (+/-0.39) mm], and the length of the pars pelvina of the urethra was 12.31 (+/-0.76) mm. Histological sections showed that vesicular gland was composed of typically branched tubulo-alveolar glands. As the fibrous connective tissue that was found among alveoles in the prostate was dense and relatively common, only few tubulo-alveolar glands occurred. The bulbourethral gland (Cowper's gland) was a tubulo-alveolar gland with a large and serrated lumen and septa between the alveoles consisted of dense fibro-muscular fibres.  相似文献

The distribution and relative frequency of six kinds of endocrine cells in the stomach of the Malayan pangolin, Manis javanica were studied immunohistochemically using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method. The stomach of the pangolin has three regions of mucous gland, one oxyntic gland and one pyloric gland. Cells immunoreactive for chromogranin, serotonin, somatostatin, BPP and glucagon were detected in all of the gastric glands, while gastrin-immunoreactive cells were found in the entire gastric gland except for the oxyntic gland. The distribution pattern of endocrine cells in the mucous gland and pyloric gland was mainly from the middle to apical portions of the glands. The endocrine cells were rare or not detected in the basal portion of all of the mucous glands and pyloric gland, but they were also found in the basal portion of the oxyntic gland. The distribution pattern of the endocrine cells in the mucous and pyloric glands suggested that this position facilitates a quick response to the luminal ingesta. The wide distribution of gastrin-immunoreactive cells in all of the mucous glands and pyloric gland was the most remarkable finding. This distribution suggests a major function of gastrin-immunoreactive cells for the digestive process in the Malayan pangolin stomach.  相似文献

The distribution of different carbohydrates in dog major and minor salivary glands was investigated using a peroxidase-labelled avidin-biotin method to demonstrate binding of six lectins (Canavalia ensiformis agglutinin [Con A], Dolichos biflorus agglutinin [DBA], Arachis hypogaea (peanut) agglutinin [PNA], Glycine max agglutinin [SBA], Tetragonolobus purpurea agglutinin [TGP] and wheat germ agglutinin [WGA]). With PNA, there was only weak staining in serous acini of parotid glands. Other lectins bound, to different degrees, to different components of the salivary glands; differences could be detected between glands and between binding of different lectins to serous and mucous acinar cells and to the epithelial cell cytoplasm, luminal surface and contents of ducts. These results provide a basis for the comparison of possible changes in carbohydrates which may occur in salivary gland diseases.  相似文献

通过制作石蜡切片,并利用苏木精—伊红染色法进行染色,对牛蛙不同部位的皮肤进行组织学观察;利用图像处理软件Image J 4.21测量皮肤厚度,运用SPSS 17.0软件对不同部位的皮肤厚度进行单因素方差分析。镜下观察组织切片可见,牛蛙的皮肤分为表皮和真皮,表皮由外向内可分为3层:角质层、颗粒层和生发层,真皮由疏松层和致密层组成。疏松层主要由网状结缔组织构成,也包括一些色素、颗粒腺和黏液腺。色素主要分布于表皮下的结缔组织中,颗粒腺和黏液腺的间隙的结缔组织中也有少量色素。鼓膜皮肤厚度显著小于其他部位皮肤厚度(P〈0.05),前肢、后肢、泄殖孔的皮肤厚度差异不显著(P〉0.05)。不同部位皮肤分布的色素细胞、颗粒腺、黏液腺数量也不同,内侧的黏液腺多于外部,而颗粒腺在表皮分布多,在深层分布少。  相似文献
