Records of 594 calving dates and 493 calving intervals collected from a herd of Retinta beef cows in southwest Spain were studied. Their efficacy as reproductive measures were compared when a long breeding season was utilized. Variables used were date of present calving (DOC), date of subsequent calving (DOSC), time from start of breeding season to calving (TBSC), interval to next calving (CI), two adjustments of calving interval by subtracting the time that bulls were not available to the cow from actual CI (ACI1 and ACI2), and three scores. Period score (SCOR) measured the 20-d increment of the 220-d calving season in which the cow calved. Pair score (PAIR) was computed by subtracting the deviation of calving interval from 365 d from the average SCOR of the two calvings involved. Adjusted pair score (APAIR) was calculated in the same way as PAIR, but using ACI1 instead of CI. Heritability estimates for DOC, SCOR, and DOSC and CI were .16, .14, .13 and 0, respectively. Heritabilities of all other measures ranged from .01 to .06. Repeatability estimates for DOC, SCOR, DOSC and CI were .29, .28, .34 and .14, respectively. Repeatability values were .28, .18, .18, .23 and .32 for TBSC, ACI1, ACI2, PAIR and APAIR, respectively. Three hundred pregnant beef cows between 35 and 125 days of gestation were scanned ultrasonically and their calving dates were predicted from measurements of fetal parts. The mean difference between the actual and predicted calving dates was 0.9 day with a standard deviation of 9.0 days. The accuracy and precision of the prediction of calving date were sufficient to be of benefit in the management of cows in late pregnancy and at calving.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to estimate direct and maternal genetic parameters for calving ease (CE), birth weight (BrW), weaning weight (WW), and calving interval (CI) to assess the possibility of including this information in beef cattle improvement programs. Field data, including a total of 59,813 animals (1,390 sires and 1,147 maternal grand sires) from the Asturiana de los Valles beef cattle breed, were analyzed with a multivariate linear model. Estimates of heritability for direct genetic effects (CED, CID, BrWD, and WWD) were 0.191 +/- 0.019, 0.121 +/- 0.013, 0.390 +/- 0.030, and 0.453 +/- 0.035, respectively, whereas those for maternal genetic effects (CEM, BrWM, and WWM) were 0.140 +/- 0.015, 0.208 +/- 0.020, and 0.138 +/- 0.022, respectively. Genetic correlations between direct or maternal genetic effects across traits were, in general, positive and moderate to low. However, genetic correlation for the pair CED-BrWD was positive and high (0.604 +/- 0.064). Genetic correlations between the direct and maternal genetic effects within a trait were negative and moderate (-0.219 +/- 0.097 for CE, -0.337 +/- 0.080 for BrW, and -0.440 +/- 0.102 for WW). Genetic correlations for CED-BrWM and CED-WWM were -0.121 +/- 0.090 and -0.097 +/- 0.113, respectively. The genetic correlation for CEM-CID was unfavorable (0.485 +/- 0.078), and those for CEM-BrWD (-0.094 +/- 0.079) and CEM-WWD (-0.125 +/- 0.082) were low and negative. The genetic correlation between CID and WWM was favorable (-0.148 +/- 0.106). Overall, the data presented here support the hypothesis that maternal effects for CE and BrW are not the same and that the genetic relationships between CI and maternal effects for WW in beef cattle follow a similar pattern to that reported between CI and milk yield in dairy cattle. Moreover, the need to include direct and maternal breeding values in beef cattle selection programs is suggested.  相似文献

The low fertility and offspring survival indicators in alpacas can be partially due to their particularity seasonal reproduction that reduces the opportunities of the females to become pregnant within a season, with the survival of the offspring concerned by the availability of food and exposure to diseases that depends on the calving date. Optimizing the date of delivery and reducing its variability are shown as eligible criteria that could be used as selection criteria within the genetic improvement programmes in alpacas, the calving date being a much more appropriate trait to measure and optimize fertility unlike of age at first calving and the calving interval, this due to the reproductive seasonality in camelids. For this study, 6,533 birth date records were taken between 2001 and 2018 of Peruvian alpacas, to estimate the genetic parameters. Models assuming heterogeneity in the residuals were fitted besides classical homogeneous models to address, not only the possibility of forwarding or delaying the calving date, but also the trend to have parturitions in similar dates. The heritability and repeatability ranged from 0.07 to 0.20 for a homogeneity model and from 0.08 to 0.23 for a heterogeneity model, and suggest the possibility of advancing or delaying the calving date. It should be taken into account that the gestation length of camelids makes it difficult to adapt many reproductive traits, and trying to centre the calving date could delay it. It was concluded the feasibility to genetically select the calving date, also in the production of camels and dromedaries, which have the same reproductive characteristics as alpacas. This selection can be combined with other traits. The heterogeneity model was shown to provide a better fit.  相似文献

Calving difficulty was analyzed under threshold and linear models considering either a fixed or random herd-year effect. The aim of the study was to compare models for predicting breeding values according to the size of herd-year groups. When simulating data sets with small herds, in order to obtain an unbiased evaluation under a nonrandom and negative association of sire and herd effects, the best model for a practical evaluation was the fixed linear model. Field data included 246,576 records of the largest Charolais herds in France. Models were compared using the correlations of estimated breeding values between the different models. Although the best model from a theoretical point of view was a threshold model with a fixed herd-year effect, a linear model with a fixed herd-year effect was the best choice from a practical point of view for predicting direct effects for calving difficulty in beef cattle and was a sufficient choice for predicting the associated maternal effects for data set with large herds. Correlations between direct estimated breeding values under the reference model and the fixed linear model and the random threshold model were 0.94 and 0.91, respectively. Correlations between the corresponding maternal estimated breeding values were 0.94 and 0.98. Heritabilities of direct effects were 0.27 and 0.14 under fixed threshold and fixed linear models, respectively. The corresponding heritabilities of maternal effects were 0.18 and 0.13, and the genetic correlation between direct and maternal effects were -0.36 and -0.34, respectively.  相似文献

Relative date of first calving of beef heifers was studied in relation to production efficiency and subsequent reproductive performance. Crossbred heifers were managed in a drylot environment for 1 yr with feed intake measured through weaning of the first calf. Mean heifer age at entry into drylot was 572 d. Production traits were evaluated by calving group (CG), where CG1 included records of heifers calving (and calves born) in the first 21 d of the calving season for a particular year, CG2 included those calving from 22 through 42 d and CG3 included those calving after 42 d. Calving groups did not differ significantly for preweaning calf ADG, but weaning age differences resulted in heavier weaning weights for CG1 compared with CG2 and CG3. An earlier relative calving date was associated with increased cumulative feed energy intake of heifers and their calves during the 1-yr test period. In terms of production efficiency, the weaning weight advantage of earlier calving was offset only partly by the increased feed energy intake of the dam-calf unit, resulting in 6.3 Mcal (12.4%) less ME per kg calf weaning weight for CG1 vs CG3 for the 1-yr period. Within a limited calving season, earlier calving dams tended to be biologically and economically more efficient because a greater proportion of their annual production cycle was in a productive (lactating) mode, diluting maintenance costs as a fraction of all costs. Heifers in CG1 also tended to calve earlier than CG3 heifers for the second calf. Calving interval was a biased measure under the management conditions of a limited breeding season and culling of open cows.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to develop a system for the monitoring of calving to both reduce perinatal morta1ity and improve dairy cow fertility by preventing the majority of post-partum reproductive pathologies. Eighty dairy cows were assigned to the protocol of calving monitoring using GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology. The application of GSM technology and the proper management of calving facilities comprise reliable approaches for calving assistance and improvements in reproductive efficiency and neonata1 viability. Based on the results of this study, we advocate the use of GSM technology on large farms for intensive mi1k production.  相似文献

Computer simulation was used to evaluate four selection strategies for reproductive success in beef cattle. The strategies were no culling; culling of nonpregnant heifers; culling of nonpregnant heifers and cows nonpregnant twice; culling all nonpregnant females. In addition, simulations were conducted utilizing method four for 20 yr, then changed to method three for an additional 20 yr. Cows were removed from the herd at age 10 if not previously culled. Because reproduction is a threshold character, an underlying normally distributed liability that influences whether or not a cow will produce a calf was assumed with a heritability estimate of .2, a mean of zero and a standard deviation of one. Regressions of breeding value for reproduction and calving rate on year of selection were calculated assuming initial calving rates of 80 and 90%. Linear and quadratic effects for breeding value were present for all selection methods at both initial rates. All primary breeding value regressions were different than that for no culling. At the 90% initial calving rate, methods three and four were different from method two. There were no differences among any regressions for calving rate. Progress for breeding value was more regular than for calving rate; maximum progress for breeding value in 40 yr was approximately .32 standard deviations for selection method four. Calving rate was more erratic, although calving rate increased approximately 7% as a result of 40 yr of selection using method four at the 80% initial calving rate. The aim of the study was to obtain estimates of genetic correlations between direct and maternal calving performance of heifers and cows and beef production traits in Piemontese cattle. Beef production traits were daily gain, live fleshiness, and bone thinness measured on 1,602 young bulls tested at a central station. Live fleshiness (six traits) and bone thinness were subjectively scored by classifiers using a nine-point linear grid. Data on calving performance were calving difficulty scores (five classes from unassisted to embryotomy) routinely recorded in the farms. Calving performance of heifers and cows were considered different traits. A total of 30,763 and 80,474 calving scores in first and later parities, respectively, were used to estimate covariance components with beef traits. Data were analyzed using bivariate linear animal models, including direct genetic effects for calving performance and beef traits and maternal genetic effects only for calving performance. Due to the nature of the data structure, which involved traits measured in different environments and on different animals, covariances were estimated mostly through pedigree information. Genetic correlations of daily gain were positive with direct calving performance (0.43 in heifers and 0.50 in cows) and negative with maternal calving performance (-0.23 and -0.28 for heifers and cows, respectively). Live fleshiness traits were moderately correlated with maternal calving performance in both parities, ranging from 0.06 to 0.33. Correlations between live fleshiness traits and direct calving performance were low to moderate and positive in the first parity, but trivial in later parities. Bone thinness was negatively correlated with direct calving performance (-0.17 and -0.38 in heifers and cows, respectively), but it was positively correlated to maternal calving performance (0.31 and 0.40). Estimated residual correlations were close to zero. Results indicate that, due to the existence of antagonistic relationships between the investigated traits, specific selection strategies need to be studied.  相似文献

SUMMARY The effect of Tritrichomonas foetus var. brisbane infection on calf production by Hereford cows was determined. The mean number of calves produced by cows that were kept continuously with bulls infected with T. foetus for 3 years was 17.6% less than the mean number produced by cows kept with a non-infected bull. Losses in production due to trichomoniasis occurred each year, but were greatest in the first 2 years in cows experiencing infection for the first time.  相似文献

Field records from the American Angus Association were used to study the associations of sire marbling score EPD and sire weaning weight maternal (milk) EPD with age at first calving (AFC) and calving interval (CI). Cows were selected based on the accuracy of their sire's milk (> or =.7) or marbling (> or =.6) EPD. The data were screened using biological constraints, and regression models were used to identify records that were greater than 5 SD from the mean. The AFC was modeled for both milk and marbling data sets to account for effects of year, sire EPD, and their interaction. The CI was subdivided into first, second, and mature calving interval traits and modeled to account for state, year, calf sex, calf birth weight (BW), calf weaning weight (WW), sire EPD, and interactions of EPD with year and state. Derivative-free REML was used to estimate heritability and genetic correlations for AFC and CI. Sire milk EPD and marbling EPD were predictors of AFC (P < .001); however, pooled estimates were unreliable because of state x EPD interactions (P < .001). Increases in sire milk EPD resulted in reductions in AFC; however, there was no consistent pattern to effects of marbling EPD increases. Models accounted for < 8% of variation in AFC. Sire milk EPD was not a predictor of first, second, or mature CI (P > .1). Sire marbling score EPD was not a predictor of second, or mature CI (P > .1); however, it was associated (P = .059) with first CI, although regression estimates varied across states and prevented pooling. The BW, sex, and WW were predictors of CI (P < .001). Increases in BW resulted in longer mature CI, and mature CI decreased as WW increased. The AFC was heritable (.22), and CI traits had heritabilities ranging from .01 to .03. The AFC was genetically correlated with first CI (-.6) and mature CI (-.93). Genetic correlations between CI traits were uninterpretable because of low additive genetic variances. In conclusion, sire marbling score and milk EPD do not seem to be reliable predictors of AFC or CI. The BW and WW have significant but small effects on AFC and CI. Selection for AFC is possible, but earlier calving heifers may have longer calving intervals.  相似文献

In certain production environments, beef cows are mated during a breeding season that starts in early summer. Cows found not to be pregnant at the end of the breeding season could either be culled or retained and remated the following summer. Alternatively, nonpregnant cows could be mated in the winter. This option would result in having both a spring and a fall calving herd. The purpose of our study was to determine the optimal replacement policy (maximizing long-run average net returns) for a specific production environment by determining for each age of cow, reproductive status (nonpregnant or pregnant), and season of pregnancy checking (spring or fall) whether the cow should be retained to the next breeding season (summer or winter) or be replaced by a pregnant heifer. The problem was formulated as a Markovian decision process and the optimal policy was found by linear programming. The optimal policy was one in which nonpregnant cows were always culled and replaced by heifers in the summer breeding herd, resulting in spring calving only.  相似文献

Data for gestation length, birth weight, calving difficulty (percent assisted) and survival from birth to weaning were analyzed from 4,639 calves by 290 sires of 14 Bos taurus breeds (Hereford, Angus, Jersey, South Devon, Limousin, Simmental, Charolais, Red Poll, Brown Swiss, Gelbvieh, Maine Anjou, Chianina, Pinzgauer and Tarentaise) mated to Hereford and Angus cows. The calves were produced over a 7-yr period in a germ plasm evaluation program. Variance components were estimated for breed of sire (sigma 2b), sire within breed of sire (sigma 2s) and progeny within sire (sigma 2w) random effects. Estimates of sigma 2b and sigma 2s direct genetic variance were similar for gestation length and calf survival. Estimates of sigma 2b genetic variance were greater than for sigma 2s for birth weight and calving difficulty. Estimates of total heritability [h2t = 4(sigma 2b + sigma 2s)/(4 sigma 2b + sigma 2s + sigma 2w)] and within-breed heritability (h2w = 4 sigma 2s/sigma 2s + sigma 2w) indicated that gestation length (h2t = .77, h2w = 64) and birth weight (h2t = .79, h2w = .46) are under a high degree of direct genetic control, calving difficulty (h2t = .42, h2w = .21) is under a moderate degree of direct genetic control and calf survival (h2t = .11, h2w = .07) is under a low degree of direct genetic control. Estimates of genetic correlation for between (rb) - and within-breed (rg) sources of genetic variation were comparable in direction, but tended to be stronger between than within breeds.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
