During 1969 to 1971, 78 preconditioned (PC) and 79 non-preconditioned (NPC) beef calves were purchased at the same auction and mixed in a feedlot. Preconditioned calves were weaned 30 days before the sale, used to drinking from a tank, and vaccinated against blackleg, malignant edema, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), parainfluenza-3 (PI3) and bovine virus diarrhea (BVD) in 1970 and 1971, and Pasteurella hemolytica and multocida in 1971. All vaccinations were completed two to three weeks before the sale. PC calves were given thiabenzadole. PC calves had significantly less shrink after shipment and in 1971 significantly more rapid daily gain during the first weeks of the feeding period. In 1969 more PC calves were treated for acute respiratory disease than NPC calves during an outbreak of PI3 and BVD infection. In 1970 and 1971 fewer PC than NPC calves were treated for acute respiratory tract disease during outbreaks of PI3 infection. The differences in clinical respiratory disease were significant in 1971. Inclusion of two doses of P. hemolytica and P. multocida bacterin before the sale in 1971 and use of an intranasal PI3 vaccine was considered to improve the PC program. Fecal egg counts for gastrointestinal nematodes were much lower in PC calves treated with thiabenzadole than untreated NPC calves.  相似文献

Data from the Alberta Certified Preconditioned Feeder Program (1980-1987) were reviewed retrospectively. Numbers of calves sold, price premiums realized, pre-and postsale performance, production and health performance of preconditioned and regular calves were examined. During the study period, the program showed marked expansion and consistently resulted in substantial premiums for preconditioned calves. Real net returns from efficient rates of gain, increased sale weights, better calf quality and improved health status (disease resistance) were realized at sale time. Feedlot data indicated that postsale morbidity and mortality were markedly reduced in groups of preconditioned calves.  相似文献

A field-trial evaluation confirmed the efficacy of a pasteurella vaccine as a means of preventing bovine pneumonia. The vaccine was comprised of streptomycin-dependent Pasteurella multocida (type A:3) and Pasteurella haemolytica (type 1). Vaccinal efficacy was defined in terms of greater body weight gains, less severe clinical signs of pneumonia, and smaller death rates as compared with the same factors in nonvaccinated calves. During the 50-day trial, vaccinated calves gained weight faster than did nonvaccinated calves (P = 0.05). Economic advantage was not found for administering a booster dose of the vaccine (P = 0.25). Nonpreconditioned nonvaccinated calves made greater dollar profits than did preconditioned nonvaccinated calves (P = 0.16). A comparison of all preconditioned calves with all nonpreconditioned calves revealed that illness and death losses were less in the preconditioned calves (P = 0.07). An evaluation of the cost vs benefit factors revealed significant advantages for administering 1 dose of vaccine of $19.08 for a preconditioned calf (P = 0.006) and of $11.39 for a nonpreconditioned calf (P = 0.05). The data indicated that there was no economic advantage for preconditioning and that the greatest economic gain was made by the vaccinated nonpreconditioned calves.  相似文献

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) persistently infected (PI) calves represent significant sources of infection to susceptible cattle. The objectives of this study were to determine if PI calves transmitted infection to vaccinated and unvaccinated calves, to determine if BVDV vaccine strains could be differentiated from the PI field strains by subtyping molecular techniques, and if there were different rates of recovery from peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) versus serums for acutely infected calves. Calves PI with BVDV1b were placed in pens with nonvaccinated and vaccinated calves for 35 d. Peripheral blood leukocytes, serums, and nasal swabs were collected for viral isolation and serology. In addition, transmission of Bovine herpes virus 1 (BHV-1), Parainfluenza-3 virus (PI-3V), and Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) was monitored during the 35 d observation period. Bovine viral diarrhea virus subtype 1b was transmitted to both vaccinated and nonvaccinated calves, including BVDV1b seronegative and seropositive calves, after exposure to PI calves. There was evidence of transmission by viral isolation from PBL, nasal swabs, or both, and seroconversions to BVDV1b. For the unvaccinated calves, 83.2% seroconverted to BVDV1b. The high level of transmission by PI calves is illustrated by seroconversion rates of nonvaccinated calves in individual pens: 70% to 100% seroconversion to the BVDV1b. Bovine viral diarrhea virus was isolated from 45 out of 202 calves in this study. These included BVDV1b in ranch and order buyer (OB) calves, plus BVDV strains identified as vaccinal strains that were in modified live virus (MLV) vaccines given to half the OB calves 3 d prior to the study. The BVDV1b isolates in exposed calves were detected between collection days 7 and 21 after exposure to PI calves. Bovine viral diarrhea virus was recovered more frequently from PBL than serum in acutely infected calves. Bovine viral diarrhea virus was also isolated from the lungs of 2 of 7 calves that were dying with pulmonary lesions. Two of the calves dying with pneumonic lesions in the study had been BVDV1b viremic prior to death. Bovine viral diarrhea virus 1b was isolated from both calves that received the killed or MLV vaccines. There were cytopathic (CP) strains isolated from MLV vaccinated calves during the same time frame as the BVDV1b isolations. These viruses were typed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and genetic sequencing, and most CP were confirmed as vaccinal origin. A BVDV2 NCP strain was found in only 1 OB calf, on multiple collections, and the calf seroconverted to BVDV2. This virus was not identical to the BVDV2 CP 296 vaccine strain. The use of subtyping is required to differentiate vaccinal strains from the field strains. This study detected 2 different vaccine strains, the BVDV1b in PI calves and infected contact calves, and a heterologous BVDV2 subtype brought in as an acutely infected calf. The MLV vaccination, with BVDV1a and BVDV2 components, administered 3 d prior to exposure to PI calves did not protect 100% against BVDV1b viremias or nasal shedding. There were other agents associated with the bovine respiratory disease signs and lesions in this study including Mannheimia haemolytica, Mycoplasma spp., PI-3V, BRSV, and BHV-1.  相似文献

Exposure to animals persistently infected (PI) with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) results in immunomodulation of cohorts that may have health and growth consequences; however, effects may differ in low-risk, preconditioned (PC) vs. high-risk, auction market (AM) beef cattle. Our objective was to compare health and performance of PC or AM management systems with (PI) or without (CON) presence of a PI-BVDV pen mate using a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Four shipment blocks of crossbred PC steers (n = 236) from 3 ranch-origins were weaned, dewormed, vaccinated, tested for PI-BVDV, and kept on the ranch for ≥42 d. Subsequently, PC steers were transported to a stocker receiving unit (RU), weighed (251 ± 2 kg), blood sampled, stratified by d -1 BW, and assigned randomly to treatment (PCPI or PCCON) with no additional processing. Simultaneously, 4 blocks of crossbred AM calves (n = 292) were assembled from regional auction markets and transported to the RU ± 36 h from PC arrival. The AM calves were weighed (245 ± 1.3 kg), stratified by gender and d -1 BW, processed under the same regimen used for PC steers at their origin ranch except bull calves were castrated, and then assigned randomly to treatment (AMPI or AMCON). Treatment pens (0.45 ha) were arranged spatially such that PI did not have fence-line or water source contact with CON. Calves were fed identically and followed the same antibiotic treatment protocol. Daily BW gain for the entire 42-d receiving trial was greater (P < 0.001) for PC (1.2 kg) compared with AM (0.85 kg). There was an exposure effect (P = 0.002) on ADG from d 28 to 42; CON gained 1.12 kg vs. 0.90 kg BW for PI cohort. Morbidity was markedly greater (P < 0.001) in AM (70%) vs. PC (7%), resulting in (P < 0.001) an antibiotic treatment cost of $20.52 and $2.48/animal, respectively. Treatment with a third antibiotic occurred more often (P = 0.04) for PI cohort, and the percentage of chronically ill cattle was greatest (P = 0.06) for AMPI. Upon arrival, BVDV type 1a, 1b, and 2a titers were greater for PC (treatment × day, P < 0.001), and the percentage seropositive to BVDV type 1a on d 0 was 100% for PC vs. 23% in AM. Platelets increased transiently (P < 0.001) with greater platelets observed in AM (P < 0.001). Results indicate that PC calves gain faster and require fewer antibiotic treatments during the receiving period. Exposure to PI reduced BW gain from d 28 to 42, increased the number of calves treated thrice, and increased chronically ill cattle for AM.  相似文献

Calves persistently infected (PI) with Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) represent an important source of infection for susceptible cattle. We evaluated vaccine efficacy using calves PI with noncytopathic BVDV2a for the challenge and compared tests to detect BVDV in acutely or transiently infected calves versus PI calves. Vaccination with 2 doses of modified live virus vaccine containing BVDV1a and BVDV2a protected the calves exposed to the PI calves: neither viremia nor nasal shedding occurred. An immunohistochemistry test on formalin-fixed ear notches and an antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay on fresh notches in phosphate-buffered saline did not detect BVDV antigen in any of the acutely or transiently infected calves, whereas both tests had positive results in all the PI calves.  相似文献

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) caused a large epizootic of acute respiratory disease in Japan in 1968—69 (Inaba et al. 1970, Inaba et al. 1972). A much smaller outbreak occurred in Switzerland (Paccaud & Jacquier 1970). In Belgium the virus has been isolated from an outbreak of respiratory disease (Wellemans et al. 1970). BRSV has later been proved an important causal agent of respiratory disorders in the same country (Wellemans & Leiinen 1975). In England and USA the virus has caused and been isolated from outbreaks of acute respiratory disease in calves (Jacobs & Edington 1971, Rosenquist 1974, Smith et al. 1974). Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most costly disease of beef cattle in North America. It is multi-factorial, with a variety of physical and physiological stressors combining to predispose cattle to pneumonia. However, efforts to discern which factors are most important have frequently failed to establish definitive answers. Calves are at highest risk shortly after transport. Risk factors include purchasing from sale barns and commingling. It is unclear whether or not these practices increase susceptibility, increase exposure, or are proxies for poor management. Lighter-weight calves appear to be at greater risk, although this has not been consistent. Persistent infection (PI) with bovine virus diarrhea virus increases BRD occurrence, but it is unclear if PI calves affect other cattle in the feedlot. The complexity of BRD has made it difficult to define involvement of individual factors. Stressors may play a role as "necessary but not sufficient" components, requiring additive effects to cause disease.  相似文献

Data were collected from 17 Arkansas livestock auctions to determine factors affecting selling price. Data included how calves were sold (single or groups), gender, breed or breed type, color, muscle thickness, horn status, frame score, fill, body condition, age, health, BW, price, and when during the sale the calf was sold. Data were randomly collected on 81,703 calves. The selling prices for steers ($99.70 ± $0.07), bulls ($95.07 ± $0.08), and heifers ($88.75 ± $0.06) were different from each other (P<0.001). Charolais x Limousin feeder cattle sold for the highest price $97.96 ± $0.22), and Longhorns sold for the lowest price ($74.52 ± $0.46). selling prices of Hereford x Charolais, Hereford x Brahman x Angus, Charolais, and Angus x Brahman feeder cattle were greater than the overall mean and were not different from each other. selling prices of 1/4 Brahman x other crosses, Simmental, Hereford, Brahman, and Longhorn were less than the overall mean and were different (P<0.01) from each other and all other breeds or breed types. Yellow feeder cattle received the highest selling price ($96.47 ± $0.12), and spotted or striped feeder cattle received the lowest ($83.84 ± $0.23). selling in groups, muscle score, horn status, frame score, fill, and body condition impacted selling price (P<0.001). Selling prices differed across livestock auctions (P < 0.001). A positive relationship existed between livestock auction volume and selling price (P < 0.05), and a quadratic relationship existed between the number of different buyers and selling price (P < 0.01). A number of management and genetic factors affected the selling price of feeder cattle.  相似文献

Objective-To determine whether administration of 2 doses of a multivalent, modified-live virus vaccine prior to breeding of heifers would provide protection against abortion and fetal infection following exposure of pregnant heifers to cattle persistently infected (PI) with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and cattle with acute bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) infection. Design-Randomized controlled clinical trial. Animals-33 crossbred beef heifers, 3 steers, 6 bulls, and 25 calves. Procedures-20 of 22 vaccinated and 10 of 11 unvaccinated heifers became pregnant and were commingled with 3 steers PI with BVDV type 1a, 1b, or 2 for 56 days beginning 102 days after the second vaccination (administered 30 days after the first vaccination). Eighty days following removal of BVDV-PI steers, heifers were commingled with 3 bulls with acute BHV1 infection for 14 days. Results-After BVDV exposure, 1 fetus (not evaluated) was aborted by a vaccinated heifer; BVDV was detected in 0 of 19 calves from vaccinated heifers and in all 4 fetuses (aborted after BHV1 exposure) and 6 calves from unvaccinated heifers. Bovine herpesvirus 1 was not detected in any fetus or calf and associated fetal membranes in either treatment group. Vaccinated heifers had longer gestation periods and calves with greater birth weights, weaning weights, average daily gains, and market value at weaning, compared with those for calves born to unvaccinated heifers. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Prebreeding administration of a modified-live virus vaccine to heifers resulted in fewer abortions and BVDV-PI offspring and improved growth and increased market value of weaned calves.  相似文献

The acute phase response as indicated by serum haptoglobin and total haemolytic complement activity (CH50) was measured in 72 cross-bred steer calves purchased at sales in Ontario. During the 28 day (d) trial, 18 steers were randomly assigned to each of the following groups: 1) control; 2) vaccinated (Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis, Parainfluenza-3, Bovine Viral Diarrhea, Bovine Respiratory Synctial Virus vaccine plus Pasteurella haemolytica vaccine); 3) supplemental chelated Cr (0.14 mg/kg); and 4) Cr plus vaccines. Haptoglobin concentrations were low at arrival, increased (P < 0.05) on day 7, and returned to near initial levels (P > 0.05) by day 14. Supplemental Cr reduced (P < 0.05) haptoglobin on day 7 when morbidity was highest. Following antibiotic treatment for respiratory disease haptoglobin was lower (P < 0.05) than during morbidity; however, during morbidity, haptoglobin concentrations were not greater in sick calves (P > 0.05) than in healthy calves. Complement activity was lowest on day 7 (P < 0.05) and peaked on day 14 (P < 0.05). Complement activity tended to be lower on day 7 for vaccine, Cr, and Cr+ vaccine groups; however, the difference from controls was not significant (P > 0.10). Complement activity did not increase on day 14 (P > 0.05) with Cr supplementation as in other treatments. Morbid calves had lower (P < 0.05) CH50 activity than healthy calves on day 14. Following antibiotic treatment, the Cr-supplemented group had higher (P < 0.05) CH50 than during morbidity. In general, chromium supplementation reduced the acute phase response in newly arrived feeder calves.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether vaccinated or conditioned feeder calves sold through special auctions in Ontario commanded a premium, compared with feeder calves sold at conventional auctions, and whether various physical characteristics of the calves were associated with the sale price. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. ANIMALS: 14,037 calves sold through conventional and special auctions at the Keady Livestock Market during the fall of 1999 and 2000. PROCEDURE: Calves were observed as they were sold by lot in the auction ring. Lot characteristics and the price received for each lot were recorded. Multivariate analysis was used to estimate the effect of lot characteristics and sale type on price. RESULTS: Information was recorded for 2,601 calf lots. Multivariate analysis indicated that various lot characteristics were associated with sale price, with 68% of the variation explained by the model. Overall, lots sold at special auctions received a premium of 0.06 dollars/lb (Canadian dollars), compared with lots sold at conventional auctions. However, the premium varied with mean body weight of the lot and year. In addition, frame size, breed, body condition score, uniformity of the lot, weaning status, mean body weight, lot size, sex, year, and sale type were significantly related to sale price. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that producers selling calves at special auctions at this market received a premium, compared with producers selling calves at conventional auctions.  相似文献

Data were collected from 15 Arkansas livestock auctions to determine factors affecting selling price. Data included how calves were sold (single or groups), sex, breed or breed type, color, muscle thickness, horn status, frame score, fill, body condition, age, health, BW, and price. Data were randomly collected on 52,401 lots consisting of 105,542 calves. Selling prices for steers ($124.20 +/- 0.07), bulls ($117.93 +/- 0.12), and heifers ($112.81 +/- 0.07) were different from each other (P <0.001). Hereford x Charolais feeder calves sold for the highest price ($122.66 +/- 0.14) and Longhorns sold for the lowest price ($74.52 +/- 0.46). Yellow feeder cattle received the highest selling price ($96.47 +/- 0.12), and spotted or striped feeder cattle received the lowest price ($83.84 +/- 0.23). The selling price of singles was lower than the price for calves sold in groups of 6 or more ($117.26 +/- 0.06 vs. $122.61 +/- 0.21; P <0.001). For cattle classified as having muscle scores of 1, 2, 3, and 4, selling prices were $120.45 +/- 0.05, $111.31 +/- 0.09, $96.28 +/- 0.44, and $82.21 +/- 1.87, respectively. Polled feeder cattle sold for $118.57 +/- 0.05, and horned feeder cattle sold for $114.87 +/- 0.14 (P <0.001). Interactions (P <0.001) were detected between frame score and BW groups, and muscle score and BW groups on the selling price of cattle. A number of management and genetic factors affected the selling price of feeder cattle.  相似文献

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infections resulting in clinical disease developed in calves, despite vaccination of dams and high maternal BVDV antibody titers in calves. Eight persistently infected (PI) calves born to immunocompetent dams were identified in the herd. Neutralizing BVDV antibody titers of PI calves had decreased greatly by the time the calves were 1 to 2 months old. Antibody titers of PI calves decreased more rapidly than antibody titers of calves that were not PI. Reduced antibody titers in PI calves allowed detection of BVDV in serum specimens of all PI calves by the time they were 8 weeks old. Persistent infection in suspect calves was detectable serologically and was confirmed by virologic examination of serum specimens 4 months after weaning, when the calves were 9 months old. Growth rates were reduced in viremic calves.  相似文献

Five field trials evaluated whether immunization of beef cattle prior to weaning, at weaning, or immediately upon arrival at the feedlot with a commercial bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) vaccine would reduce subsequent treatment for respiratory disease.

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus vaccination was associated with a significant (p<0.05) reduction in treatment rate in one of three groups of calves immunized prior to weaning (−12%) and in calves immunized upon arrival at the feedlot (−4%).

There was no significant (p>0.05) effect of the BRSV vaccine on treatment rate in calves immunized at weaning, in calves immunized upon arrival at the Saskatoon bull test station, or in yearlings immunized upon arrival at the feedlot.

Although the trend in these field trials was to a sparing effect of the BRSV vaccine, the small reduction in treatment rate may not justify the cost of the vaccination program.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a widespread bovine pathogen capable of causing disease affecting multiple body systems. Previous studies have shown 2-(2-benzimidazolyl)-5-[4-(2-imidazolino)phenyl]furan dihydrochloride (DB772) effectively prevents BVDV infection in cell culture. The aim of this project was to assess the efficacy of DB772 for the prevention of acute BVDV infection. Four calves seronegative to BVDV were treated with DB772 and another 4 calves were treated with diluent only on the same dosing schedule. Each calf was subsequently challenged intranasally with BVDV. Virus was isolated consistently from untreated calves on days 4 to 8, while treated calves remained negative by virus isolation during this period. Azotemia was exhibited by all treated calves on day 4 resulting in the euthanasia of 1 calf on day 10 and the death of another on day 13. Virus was isolated from the 2 remaining treated calves on day 14 or 21. On day 21, both remaining treated calves and all 4 untreated calves had anti-BVDV antibody titers > 1:2048. This pilot study indicates that DB772 temporarily prevented acute disease due to BVDV, but carries a significant concern of renal toxicity.  相似文献

Reproductive efficiency is imperative for the maintenance of profitability in both dairy and cow-calf enterprises. Bovine viral diarrhea virus is an important infectious disease agent of cattle that can potentially have a negative effect on all phases of reproduction. Reduced conception rates,early embryonic deaths, abortions, congenital defects, and weak calves have all been associated BVDV infection of susceptible females. In addition, the birth of calves PI with BVDV as a result of in utero fetal exposure is extremely important in the perpetuation of the virus in an infected herd or spread to other susceptible herds. Bulls acutely or PI with BVDV may bea source of viral spread through either natural service or semen used in artificial insemination. Management practices including elimination of PI cattle, biosecurity measures and strategic use of vaccination can be implemented to reduce the risk of BVDV related reproductive losses.Development of vaccines and vaccine strategies capable of providing better protection against fetal infection would be of benefit.  相似文献

Three experiments have been carried out to verify the effectiveness of an immunomodulator, Baypamun (Bayer AG) in limiting the spread of Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1), the causal agent of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR). In the first experiment, four calves infected with BHV-1 developed severe disease whereas four calves given Baypamun simultaneously with the virus had less severe disease. Four other calves in contact with the infected calves became severely ill but another four given Baypamun were only mildly affected. In the second experiment three calves infected with BHV-1, which reacted with typical disease, were allowed to remain in contact with six calves. All six calves were given Baypamun at various times following the exposure to BHV-1 infection and all showed a much reduced reaction with two treated for 4 days developing no clinical disease. Finally, in the third experiment one calf vaccinated one month before the start of the experiment did not develop any signs of disease when housed together with a calf experimentally infected with BHV-1. Of four other calves, vaccinated when the infected calf showed the first signs of disease, only the two given Baypamun in addition to the vaccine, were protected from clinical disease whereas the two given vaccine only developed classical signs of IBR. In the three experiments the virus shedding by the Baypamun-treated calves resulted to be significantly reduced.  相似文献

Houe, H. and I. Heron: Immune response of calves persistently infected with Bovine Virus Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV) to other agents. Acta vet. scand. 1993, 34, 305-310.– The ability of calves persistently infected (PI) with bovine virus diarrhoea virus BVDV to respond immunologically to defined antigens other than BVDV was studied. Five clinically healthy PI calves were studied together with 5 non-PI calves serving as controls. The humoral immune response was tested by measuring the serum antitoxin titre following immunization against tetanus. The cellular immune response was tested by the ability to develop a positive reaction in a cutaneous tuberculin test performed 1 month after immunization against Johne’s disease (paratuberculosis). Finally, a skin-sensitizing agent, dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), was employed to study whether PI calves would react by hypersensitization following skin exposure to DNCB for 7 consecutive days followed by application of DNCB to a new skin area remote from the area that had first been exposed.The response of PI calves to the various types of antigenic stimuli applied was not significantly different from that of the control calves. Thus, PI calves developed a potent antitoxin response after tetanus immunization, they showed a positive reaction to tuberculin skin test after immunization against paratuberculosis, and were skin sentitized with DNCB.  相似文献

Feline infectious peritonitis was first described as a distinct disease entity in 1966 in the United States (Wolfe and Griesemer, 1966), although it had been observed prior to that date (Holzworth, 1963). The disease is widespread in that country (Disque et al., 1968: Hardy and O'Reilly, 1969; Ward and Pederson, 1969; Colby and Low, 1970; Colgrove and Parker, 1971) and has been recorded in Canada (Stephenson et al., 1971), England (Ingram, 1970), Ireland (Hartigan and Wilson, 1972), Japan (Konishi et at., 1971), the Netherlands (Mieog and Richter, 1971), Switzerland (Stunzi and Grevel, 1973) and most recently in Australia (Watson et al., 1974; Jones and Hogg, 1974). Two cases of feline infectious .peritonitis have, been seen in New Zealand (R. C. Gumbrell, pers. comm.).
