In three experiments a solution of formic acid (Bioadd) was added to feed 'naturally' contaminated with salmonellas. In two of them no salmonella infections were demonstrated in broiler chickens given feed containing 0.6 per cent (w/w) of the formic acid solution for seven weeks and in the third the infection rate was reduced considerably. In four other experiments the feed was contaminated artificially with between 1 and 47 Salmonella kedougou/g and a second product (BPO12), consisting of a mixture of formic acid and propionic acid, was evaluated. When it was added at 0.5 to 0.68 per cent (w/w) only one of 30 groups of 10 to 12 birds became infected with S kedougou by two weeks of age, compared with 22 of 27 control groups. The treatment of the feed with BPO12 one week before the addition of the salmonellas prevented the establishment of infection in chicks given the treated feed, indicating that acid treatment will provide protection against subsequent recontamination of the feed with the organisms. The isolation rate of S kedougou from artificially contaminated feed treated with BPO12 was reduced only slightly but the feed was apparently 'safe' for the birds which consumed it. 相似文献

The incidence and severity of tibial dyschondroplasia in broiler chickens were increased by feeding rations containing high levels of phosphorus relative to the level of calcium. Tibial dyschondroplasia was not eliminated by feeding a ration containing 1.5% calcium and 0.5% available phosphorus. Before typical dyschondroplasia developed, chickens fed a high level of phosphorus had uniformly thickened growth plates at 2 weeks of age. The majority of this thickening was due to an increase in the zone of proliferation, identical to that which occurs in calcium-deficiency rickets. 相似文献

The influence of Lactobacillus acidophilus and zinc bacitracin alone, or in combination, on the growth of broiler chickens was monitored over a period of 8 weeks. 2. The maximum improvement in body weight over the controls was 10.8% with both additives in the diet but the use of bacitracin alone induced a 9.1% improvement. 3. Food conversion was reduced by zinc bacitracin alone but was improved by the use of L. acidophilus and bacitracin in combination. 4. 1. Various theories have been proposed to explain the reduced performance of broilers when given feeds excessively high in protein, but a satisfactory solution to this problem had, up to now, not been found. Three experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that the efficiency of utilisation of protein ( ep) is a linear–plateau function of the ratio between the feed apparent metabolisable energy and digestible crude protein contents (AMEn:DCP) and that dietary protein quality, feed allocation and sex do not influence this relationship. 2. A ‘linear–plateau’ model successfully described the efficiency of protein utilisation (ep) as a function of AMEn:DCP in all three experiments. In Experiment 1, with both sexes being both ad libitum and control fed, the breakpoint was at 58.6 MJ AMEn/kg DCP. In Experiment 2, both sexes were fed balanced and unbalanced protein series, and at different rates, the slopes of the ascending part of the linear–plateau relationships for the different treatments were the same for all treatments (0.0204), and the inflection point was at 71 MJ AMEn/kg DCP. Using similar treatments in Experiment 3, the breakpoint for the balanced protein was 72 MJ/kg and for the unbalanced, 64, with a combined slope of 68 MJ AMEn/kg DCP. 3. The three experiments provide adequate evidence that ep is a linear–plateau function of the dietary AMEn:DCP ratio with a breakpoint of around 66.2 ± 1.98 MJ AMEn/kg DCP. Below this critical ratio, food intake declines as does protein and lipid retention. 4. That broilers, like pigs, exhibit an energy-dependent phase when high-protein feeds are offered is of practical importance when formulating pre-starter feeds for broilers and starter feeds for turkey poults as the ep of such feeds may well fall below the maximum due to the lack of dietary energy required to process the high dietary protein contained in such feeds resulting in poorer performance than expected. 相似文献

The aim of the experiment was to study the effect of dietary organic acids, fumaric and sorbic, on nitrogen corrected apparent metabolisable energy (AME(N)), metabolisability of nutrients, endogenous losses and performance on young broiler chickens. A total of 56 male Ross broilers were used in a growing experiment from 14 to 30d age. Seven experimental wheat-based (655g/kg) diets were formulated. The control diet did not contain organic acids. The other six diets were produced with the addition of fumaric or sorbic acids, replacing 0.5% , 1.0% or 1.5% of the wheat. The organic acid supplemented diets contained higher levels of AME(N) compared to the control diet. Overall, birds offered organic acids had lower feed intake. Dietary organic acids did not significantly affect weight gain or feed efficiency, however, birds offered supplemented diets had lower numbers of Lactic acid bacteria and Coliforms in the ileum and caeca. Birds offered organic acids had lower levels of endogenous losses compared to control fed birds. There was a negative relationship between AME(N) of the diets and excreted endogenous losses, measured as sialic acid. It can be concluded that the decrease in secretions from the gastrointestinal tract in the presence of fumaric and sorbic acids may be a mechanism involved in the mode of action of dietary organic acids. 相似文献

1. A study was conducted with modern broiler chicks to test the effects of early life protein nutrition and sex on responses in growth and body composition to dietary protein at a later age. Effects on the incidence of metabolic disorders were also evaluated. 2. From 11 to 26 d of age (EXP1), birds were given 8 diets varying in balanced protein to energy ratio (BPE ratio) between 0.575 and 1.100 g digestible lysine per MJ AMEn. Birds from two treatment groups in EXP1 (BPE ratio of 0.725 and 1.025 g/MJ, respectively) were subsequently used in a test from 26 to 41 d of age (EXP2). In EXP2, 8 diets were used, varying in BPE ratio between 0.500 and 1.025 g/MJ. 3. Responses in weight gain and feed conversion to BPE ratio in EXP2 changed considerably when BPE ratio in EXP1 was modified, irrespective of sex. Up to 10% improvement in both weight gain and feed conversion in EXP2 was observed if BPE ratio in EXP1 was 0.725 compared with 1.025 g/MJ. With males, however, the effect of treatment in EXP1 on weight gain in EXP2 was present only at high BPE ratios. 4. For the relative gain of breast meat and abdominal fat, but not for carcase, the responses of male broilers to BPE ratio in EXP2 were altered by the BPE ratio in EXP1. With females, responses in composition of the gain to diet in EXP2 were independent of BPE ratio in EXP1. 5. The incidence of metabolic disorders was low, irrespective of treatment in EXP1. The lower BPE ratio in EXP1 increased mortality in EXP2 from 0.8 to 3.6%. 6. Our findings show that broiler responses to dietary protein depend on previous protein nutrition and sex. Effects of early life protein nutrition on incidence of metabolic disorders were not observed. The results strongly suggest that protein levels in grower and finisher diets should not be optimised independently, but simultaneously. 相似文献

The influence of feed grinding (coarsely or finely ground feed) and feed form (mash or pellets) on the intestinal environment was investigated in a growth experiment with broiler chickens taking the intestinal microflora, intestinal viscosity, and the activities of pancreatic digestive enzymes into consideration. 2. As compared to mash the feeding of pellets was associated with a significantly higher body weight due to increased feed intake and improved feed utilisation. 3. Pellet-fed birds had significantly decreased gizzard weights, a higher gizzard pH and a lower intestinal pH than mash-fed birds. 4. Pellet-fed birds had significantly lower relative pancreas weights and lower activities of pancreatic digestive enzymes (amylase, lipase, chymotrypsin), which indicates the existence of a feedback mechanism, which may have been triggered by the intestinal concentration of enzymatically hydrolysed products or of the respective digestive enzymes. 5. Pellet-fed birds had larger numbers of coliform bacteria and enterococci in the ileum and a reduced number of Clostridium perfringens and lactobacilli in the distal end of the digestive tract (caeca and rectum). 1. Broiler chickens were fed 60–100% of recommended energy intakes to study the effects of energy restriction on protein and fat retention. 2. At an energy retention of 179 kJ/kg W 0·75 d, only protein was retained. At higher energy intakes, each increment in retention had a rather constant composition: about 85% energy in fat and 15% in protein. At lower energy intakes body fat was mobilised whereas protein was deposited. 3. The efficiencies of energy retention in protein and fat were estimated to be 0·66 and 0·86 respectively. 4. 1. Male broilers were reared in individual cages from 23 to 44 d of age. The effect of 2 temperatures (22° and 32°C) and 2 crude protein (CP) levels (160 and 200 g/kg) were studied. The low protein diet was supplemented with lysine, methionine, arginine, threonine and valine in order to meet requirements. 2. At 22°C, a reduced CP content did not affect growth rate and breast muscle but slightly increased adiposity and food to gain ratio (FCR). Water consumption was reduced. 3. High temperature reduced growth rate and absolute and proportional breast muscle weight, and increased adiposity and FCR. These effects were more pronounced with the low CP diet. Water consumption was also reduced. 4. It was concluded that reducing CP content did not seem a good way to help broilers to withstand hot conditions. 1. Broilers were produced from two lines of breeders selected for three generations for fast and slow feather growth. The base population foundation stock originated from a commercial pedigree female line, which carried only the dominant sex‐linked late feathering gene K. Three isoenergetic (12.7 MJ AME/kg) starter and grower diets were formulated to contain 280, 240 and 200, and 260, 220 and 180 g/kg protein, respectively, and fed to 156 broilers of each sex to give three starter‐grower combinations. 2. Broiler performance in terms of growth, food conversion ratio, carcase meat, fat and protein content was optimised on the 240 to 220 g/kg protein starter‐grower series of diets. 3. Birds of the slow line were significantly (P<0.05) heavier at 48 d of age and had the same food intake and food conversion ratio as birds of the fast feathering line. 4. The slow line birds had significantly (P<0.01) shorter feathers and less total plumage weight at 48 d. The slow line birds had significantly (P<0.001) less carcase fat and significantly (P<0.05) more carcase protein than the fast line. 1. The results of 47 experiments with broilers over the period 1974 to 1983 were selected for regression analysis. Included were those dealing with the relationship of growth and food utilisation to content of dietary protein (DP), metabolisable energy (DME) and added fat (DAF) in conventional feedingstuffs. 2. Significant correlations were found between DP and DME (0#lb50; P < 0#lb01), DP and DAF (0#lb61; P < 0#lb01), and DME and DAF (0#lb65; P < 0#lb01) contents. 3. Using multiple regression models, growth and food utilisation efficiency (FUE) were found to be dependent on the linear and quadratic effects of DME (r2 values = 0#lb67 and 0–64 respectively). Growth and FUE were also dependent on the linear and quadratic effects of DP (r2 values = 0#lb70 and 0#lb49 respectively). 4. By including the effects of DME, DP and DAF in the gain and FUE models it was shown that growth and FUE were dependent on DME, DP and DAF (r2 values = 0#lb76 and 0#lb79 respectively). 5. It was concluded that hypotheses concerning the broiler's response to DME and DAF were both correct but incomplete. Necrotic enteritis was reproduced in broiler chickens by mixing cultures of Clostridium perfringens in the feed. Mortality due to necrotic enteritis was higher among chickens fed rations based on wheat, rye, barley, and oat groats than among chickens fed corn-based rations. Addition of pentosanase to a wheat-based diet did not affect the level of mortality due to necrotic enteritis. Addition of pectin and guar gum to different rations severely reduced growth rate and eliminated necrotic enteritis from test birds. ABSTRACT1. This feeding trial investigated the effects of herbal feed additives on performance of broiler chickens, jejunal and caecal microbiota, jejunal morphology, meat chemical composition and oxidative stability during refrigerated storage.2. In a 42 days trial, 320 one-day-old broiler chickens were randomly allocated to 4 groups with 4 replicate pens each containing 20 chicks. The control group was fed maize–soybean-based diets. The diets of the other three groups were supplemented with herbal feed additives: HRB1 with Stresomix TM (0.5 g/kg feed); HRB2 with Ayucee TM (1.0 g/kg feed); HRB3 with Salcochek Pro TM (1.0 g/kg feed). The GC/MS analysis of the feed additives showed that the major components of HRB1 were β-caryophyllene (14.4%) and menthol (9.8%); HRB2 were n-hexadecanoic acid (14.22%) and β-caryophyllene (14.4%); and HRB3 were menthol (69.6%) and clavicol methyl ether (13.9%).3. Intestinal samples were taken at 42 day to determine bacterial populations (total aerobe counts, Lactobacilli, and Escherichia coli) and perform gut morphology analysis. Meat samples were analysed for chemical composition and oxidative stability under storage.4. The HRB1 group had improved ( P < 0.05) body weight gain and tended to have improved (0.05 ≤ P < 0.10) feed conversion ratio, compared to the control group. Jejunum lactic acid bacteria counts were increased ( P < 0.001) in groups HRB1 and HRB3, compared to the control group, whereas caecal lactic acid bacteria counts tended to increase (0.05 ≤ P < 0.10) in group HRB1, compared to the control group. Breast meat fat content tended to be lower (0.05 ≤ P < 0.10) in group HRB1. Meat oxidative stability was improved ( P < 0.001), and jejunum villus height, crypt depth and goblet cells numbers were increased (P < 0.001) in all three herbal supplemented groups, compared to the control.5. In conclusion, herbal feed additives may be able to improve both growth performance and antioxidant activity of broiler chickens, based on their phenolic compound content. 相似文献

1. An experiment was conducted to examine the variability in chemical composition of 16 wheat cultivars and to study how this variability affected the performance of broiler chickens given diets containing 650 or 815 g wheat/kg diet during the first 3 weeks of life. Intestinal viscosity, apparent fat digestibility and apparent metabolisable energy were determined with all diets. Intestinal pH and the relative weight of different parts of the intestine were measured in chickens fed on diets with the high wheat inclusion. 2. The 16 wheat cultivars varied in chemical composition, with protein content ranging from 112 to 127 g/kg dry matter, starch content from 658 to 722 g/kg dry matter and non-starch polysaccharides from 98 to 117 g/kg dry matter. The effect of the different wheat cultivars on the measured parameters was most pronounced in chickens fed on diets with 815 g wheat/kg diet (P<0.001). However, significant (P<0.001) differences between cultivars were still present at the lower wheat content. 3. Milling-quality wheats resulted in better performance (P<0.001) than feeding-quality wheats at the high inclusion, whereas such an effect could not be registered in diets at the lower wheat inclusion. These results indicate that some of the feeding wheats are comparable in quality to milling wheats when included at the concentrations which are more common in practical broiler diets. 4. Decreasing the wheat content in the diets resulted in significantly (P<0.001) better performance and considerably (P<0.001) lower intestinal viscosity (jejunum; 2.4 to 5.9 cps, ileum; 4.6 to 10.9 cps) than in chickens fed on diets with the higher wheat inclusion level (jejunum; 9.1 to 38.4 cps, ileum; 20.8 to 82.0 cps). 5. Diets with 815 g wheat/kg influenced pH in the caeca, but not in the ileum and gizzard. The relative weights of the gizzard and ileum differed significantly (P<0.05) between treatments, whereas those of duodenum, jejunum and caeca were not affected by dietary addition of the different wheat cultivars. 6. The present study demonstrated that the chemical composition and the nutritive value of Danish wheats for broilers vary markedly. The results indicated that the non-starch polysaccharide and especially the arabinoxylan content of wheat are important factors in the discussion of the result obtained. Poor correlations were seen between performance and AMEn and care should be taken when using AMEn values alone to predict the nutritive value of wheat and wheat-based diets. 相似文献

The aim of the study was the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity (in vitro) of lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil (LEO) and the effect of its addition to the drinking water of broiler chickens on their production performance. Antimicrobial activity was determined by establishing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) using a series of microdilutions. Bird experiments were carried out on a commercial farm on 300 Ross 308 broilers. One‐day‐old chicks were randomly assigned to three experimental groups of 100 individuals (five replications of 20 individuals each). In the control group, chickens received drinking water without added essential oil throughout the rearing period. In the LEO 0.2 and LEO 0.4 groups, from 1 to 42 days of bird life, the LEO 0.2 group had 0.2 ml/L of essential lavender oil added to the drinking water, while LEO 0.4 had 0.4 ml/L added. The results of the experiment showed the antimicrobial activity of LEO and its positive effect on the production results of broiler chickens. Application of higher concentration of essential oil (0.4 ml/L) significantly affected production results (BW, FCR, WCR— p < .01). No differences were observed in FI, WI, F:W and mortality ( p > .05). In vitro studies indicate a significant effect of LEO on the inhibition of microbial growth. These results encourage further studies on a larger scale that will confirm antimicrobial efficiency and define the mechanisms of action of Lavandula angustifolia essential oil and its individual components. 相似文献
