The teats of Brown Swiss and Austrian Simmental cows, divided into two groups, one milked by means of an automatic milking system, the other using a conventional milking parlour, were examined monthly by ultrasonography. Aim of the study was to compare the effects of two different milking machines upon the structures of the bovine teat canal and wall by ultrasonography and thereby evaluate ultrasonography as a research tool for visualisation of different influences on the bovine teat. Length and thickness of the teat canal and teat wall thickness were measured and analysed. During lactation, teat canal length and thickness increased in both groups, teat canal length decreased in conventional milked cows at the end of lactation. Shorter and narrower teat canals were observed in automatic milked cows. Differences between the groups in teat canal length and thickness were determined in early lactation. During lactation teat wall thickness showed a slight increase. Automatic milked cows displayed thinner teat walls than cows milked in the milking parlour. Teat morphology was influenced by the number and duration of lactations, milk yield, quarter of the udder and time and date of examination. It was concluded that the effect of the two different milking machines caused significant differences in bovine teat morphology and that ultrasonography proved to be an appropriate method for visualising influences of the milking technique on the bovine teat.  相似文献

We studied the association of milkers' hands and milking unit liners as fomites, and teat skin as a reservoir, with S. aureus intramammary infections (IMI). Samples were collected from 40 commercial herds and S. aureus isolates were phage typed. Only 10 of 257 isolates were not typable. Of the milk samples, 8.4% had typable S. aureus; 4.5% and 9.2% of the skin and liner swabbings had typable S. aureus. Twenty-three different phage types were identified, 1 type was found in nearly 75% of the herds. Herds in which milking unit backflush was used were less likely to have the same phage type on the liners and the teat skin, and on the liners and milk samples, than herds that did not backflush. A greater percentage of liners had S. aureus of the same type as those causing S. aureus IMI, than skin swabbing solutions with the same type as that associated with IMI. Herds which did not use post-milking teat asepsis (teat dip) did not have a greater percentage of S. aureus isolates on the teat skin, nor were the S. aureus test skin isolates more likely to be of the same type as those causing intramammary infection. Results would suggest that the liner appears to be a significant fomite, that backflushing reduces its significance, and that teat skin is a less significant reservoir for S. aureus intramammary infection.  相似文献

Biofilm production by 221 Staphylococcus aureus isolates from 45 dairy herds was evaluated. Isolates were from composite milk of 117 cows, from teat skin of 70 cows, and from 34 milking machine unit liners. Of S. aureus from milk samples, 41.4% were biofilm producers, as compared to 24.7 and 14.7% of the isolates collected from skin and liners. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) best categorized S. aureus biofilm producers as compared to phage typing and binary typing. PFGE types that were significantly associated with isolation from milk as opposed to teat skin or liners, had isolates that were more likely to produce biofilm than PFGE types that were isolated from milk, skin and liners at similar frequencies. By contrast, PFGE type A was significantly associated with isolation from teat skin and had few biofilm producers. PFGE type Q, which is exclusively a milk, isolate produced more biofilm as evidenced by absorbance values. Given S. aureus that are associated with milk are more likely to produce biofilm as compared to extramammary sources (teat skin and milking unit liners), suggests that biofilm production is a risk factor for infection.  相似文献

A zero-grazed herd of approximately 400 cows had a significant mastitis problem associated with Escherichia coli and Streptococcus uberis during a study over three and a half years. Dry cow therapy and post-milk teat dipping effectively controlled staphylococci and the bulk milk cell count averaged less than 400 X 10(3) cells/ml, but over 1800 clinical cases of mastitis occurred over this period, 32 per cent of which were associated with E coli and 25 per cent with Str uberis. Only 8 per cent of the cases associated with E coli showed obvious systemic disturbance and 75 per cent were cured following penicillin and streptomycin treatment. The incidence was highest during spring and summer when the housed cows were dirtiest. Gross teat-end contamination came mainly from sources other than cubicle bedding, and changing the bedding from sawdust to sand did not alter the incidence of clinical mastitis. It was not possible to maintain adequate cleanliness either inside or outside the parlour, nor maintain a trouble-free milking apparatus. The costs of mastitis in this herd during one year are calculated.  相似文献

Eight Danish Holstein cows were milked with a 1-mm thick specially designed soft liner on their right rear teat and a standard liner mounted under extra high tension on their left rear teat. Four of the animals were overmilked for 5 min. Rear teats were subjected to ultrasound examination on the first day and to infrared thermography on the second day. Teats were submersed in ethanol 20 min post-milking on the second day. Ultrasonography measurements showed that teat canal length increased by 30-41% during milking. Twenty minutes after milking, teats milked with modified standard liners still had elongated teat canals while teats milked with the soft liner were normalized. Overmilking tended to increase teat wall thickness. Approximately 80% of variability in teat canal length, from before teat preparation to after milking, could be explained by changes during teat preparation. Thermography indicated a general drop in teat temperature during teat preparation. Teat temperature increased during milking and continued to increase until the ethanol challenge induced a significant drop. Temperatures approached pre-challenge rather than pre-milking temperatures within 10 minutes after challenge. Teat temperatures were dependent on type of liner. Mid-teat temperatures post-challenge relative to pre-teat preparation were dependent on overmilking. Thermography and ultrasound were considered useful methods to indirectly and non invasively evaluate teat tissue integrity.  相似文献

: Friesian-type dairy cows were milked with different machine settings to determine the effect of these settings on teat tissue reaction and on milking characteristics. Three teat-cup liner designs were used with varying upper barrel dimensions (wide-bore WB = 31.6 mm; narrow-bore NB = 21.0 mm; narrow-bore NB1 = 25.0 mm). These liners were tested with alternate and simultaneous pulsation patterns, pulsator ratios (60:40 and 67:33) and three system vacuum levels (40, 44 and 50 kPa). Teat tissue was measured using ultrasonography, before milking and directly after milking. The measurements recorded were teat canal length (TCL), teat diameter (TD), cistern diameter (CD) and teat wall thickness (TWT).Teat tissue changes were similar with a system vacuum level of either 50 kPa (mid-level) or 40 kPa (low-level). Widening the liner upper barrel bore dimension from 21.0 mm (P < 0.01) or 25.0 mm (P < 0.001) to 31.6 mm increased the magnitude of changes in TD and TWT after machine milking. Milk yield per cow was significantly (P < 0.05) higher and cluster-on time was reduced (P < 0.01) with the WB cluster as compared to the NB1 cluster. Minimum changes in teat tissue parameters were achieved with system vacuum level of 40 kPa and 50 kPa using NB and WB clusters, respectively. Similar changes in teat tissue and milk yield per cow were observed with alternate and simultaneous pulsation patterns. Widening pulsator ratio from 60:40 to 67:33 did not have negative effects on changes in teat tissue and had a positive effect on milk yield and milking time. Milk liner design had a bigger effect on teat tissue changes and milking characteristics than pulsation settings.  相似文献

Sawdust was aspirated into one of the teatcups of the milking unit by induced liner slip during milking of 10 cows, which were then slaughtered. Sawdust particles were recovered from the interior of the quarters, the teat skin and the inside of the liners corresponding to both treated and untreated teats, and from the milk claw and the bucket as well. Sterile sawdust was introduced into the teat cisterns of three quarters of one cow. Clinical mastitis developed. The investigation was initiated by an outbreak of Serratia-mastitis in a dairy herd and supports the view that the outbreak was caused by contaminated sawdust used as litter in combination with improper detachment of the milking units. Widening of the impact concept is propsosed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the influences of different milking practices on cow udder health in 80 large dairy herds (range 100-1100 cows) in Brandenburg, Germany. Milking practices were evaluated during one complete milking using a standardized data capture form. The somatic cell count (SCC) of all lactating cows on each farm was determined monthly by the local milk recording association 'Landeskontrollverband Brandenburg'. Factor analysis was used to investigate the relationship between the different aspects of the milking practices. The components extracted by the factor analysis were examined for their influence on the SCC of the current month (CMSCC) and the year before the visit (YASCC) using univariate analysis of variance. Three components were extracted from the milking practices. 'Reasonable use of water' was significantly related to CMSCC (P = 0.019) and YASCC (P = 0.003). It included information on the use of a hose to clean udders before milking, cleaning of the floor between groups and use of water to clean teats. 'Attention of the milkers' was also significantly associated with CMSCC (P = 0.012) and YASCC (P = 0.014). It included information on the accuracy of mastitis detection by foremilk screening and the regular use of post-milking teat and cluster disinfection. The component 'preparation routines' (method of udder cleaning and forestripping) did not significantly influence CMSCC and YASCC. These results indicate that excessive use of water in the parlour during milking time is harmful to udder health and that the consistency of procedures in the milking parlour presents significant room for improvement in large dairy herds in Brandenburg.  相似文献

We used multiple-regression analysis of field data to quantify the marginal impacts of various mastitis-control procedures on bulk-tank somatic-cell count (BTSCC). Estimates of milk-yield depression and the probability of herds paying a BTSCC penalty due to the presence of subclinical mastitis were made. An assessment of the economic efficiency of mastitis control by high BTSCC producers was also made using a loss-expenditure frontier. Significant interactions were detected between premilking udder-preparation methods (UP) and post-milking teat disinfection (PMTD), and also between the milking system of the herds and both the use of dry-cow therapy (DCT) and a regular milking-machine test (MMT). Udder preparation involving washing was associated with a higher SCC and had a detrimental effect on the efficacy of PMTD. Amongst herds facing a high-BTSCC problem (BTSCC >400,000 cells/ml), herds using PMTD without UP (regardless of the type of milking system), those using DCT (in parlour systems), and those with a parlour system having their milking machines tested obtained returns of Pound Sterling 1.4, Pound Sterling 3.9 and Pound Sterling 1.1, respectively, per Pound Sterling 1 investment in each of these procedures as a result of reductions in milk-yield losses and BTSCC penalties. The minimum total cost of disease within these herds was Pound Sterling 65.50/cow/year (due to Pound Sterling 41.40 revenue losses plus Pound Sterling 24.10 mastitis-control expenditure) attained by herds which had a parlour system and used DCT, MMT and PMTD (without UP). However, the average cost of subclinical mastitis for all high-BTSCC farms was Pound Sterling 100/cow/yr; hence, the difference (pound Sterling 34.50) could be saved by the more-efficient application of mastitis-control procedures.  相似文献

AIM: To assess a novel method for automatic in-line detection of clinical mastitis.

METHODS: For a brief period at the start of milking for each cow, electrical conductivity of foremilk was measured for each quarter in turn, using a single sensor installed in the long milk tube (LMT) about 1.5 m downstream from the milking-machine claw. Sequential separation of flow between udder quarters was achieved by control of pulsation to individual teatcups within a conventional cluster. The ratio of conductivity values between quarters was used as an indicator of mastitis status. The concept was evaluated initially in a pilot trial in a 200-cow herd milked in a 23-stall swing-over herringbone milking parlour. It was then tested rigorously in a field trial in a 640-cow herd milked in a 50-stall rotary milking parlour. Both trials were conducted in the Waikato region of New Zealand. In the latter trial, sensor results were compared with visual inspection of a commercial in-line mastitis filter fitted to each milking unit. These filters were inspected for clots immediately after every cow's milking, for 3 weeks. The dataset of approximately 27,000 individual milkings was tested against several published or potential alter- native ‘gold standards’ for diagnosing clinical mastitis.

RESULTS: In the pilot trial, 12–14 clinical events were detected out of 19 true clinical quarters, with a false-alert rate of between three and five false electrical-conductivity alerts per 1,000 individual milkings. In the more rigorous field trial, sensitivity ranged from 68 to 88%, and the false-alert rate (false-alert episodes per 1,000 individual milkings) ranged from 2.3 to 7.0.

CONCLUSION: The novel clinical mastitis detection system, based on separation of the flow and measurement of electrical conductivity from foremilk of individual udder quarters, has the potential to provide a new tool for helping farmers to monitor clinical mastitis in herds milked with conventional clusters.  相似文献

An on-farm experiment was performed to investigate the effects of two milking systems on teat condition. An auto-tandem milking parlor made by GEA® with a conventional milking cluster (CON) and a single tube milking system called MultiLactor® (MULTI) from Siliconform GmbH were tested. For both milking system, in total 73 animals were milked over a period of seven months. To assess the effect of milking on teat condition, each teat was scored according to teat-condition evaluation systems. To evaluate teat condition, the teat color, ring formation at the teat base and formation of teat hyperkeratosis were assessed. The evaluation was conducted once a month after milking. The collected data were then statistically analyzed with generalized linear mixed models. The only differences found between the two milking systems occurred with respect to their effect on teat color. MULTI showed significantly better scores compared to CON. There were no significant differences between the milking systems with regard to teat-end hyperkeratosis and ring formation at the teat base.  相似文献

Using an in vivo test on teat skin the disinfectant activity of a teat dip containing chlorhexidine and cetrimide was compared with two iodophor solutions, one containing the recommended concentration of 0.5 per cent available iodine and the other a 10-fold dilution of this (0.05 per cent iodine). The test organisms used were Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and for both species the 0.5 per cent iodophor was significantly more bactericidal than either the diluted iodophor or the chlorhexidine/cetrimide teat dip (P less than 0.01). In the test against S aureus, chlorhexidine/cetrimide and the 0.05 per cent iodophor showed similar bactericidal activity, but the iodophor was significantly more bactericidal against E coli (P less than 0.01). It is argued that due to its low bactericidal activity this formulation of chlorhexidine/cetrimide is likely to be inferior to 0.5 per cent iodophor solution as a disinfectant teat dip.  相似文献

The occurrence of self-suckling was recorded in 21 dairy goats during periods of 20 minutes at three different times per day (immediately after milking and the first feed, immediately after the second feed and in the afternoon) for 27 days (divided into three experimental periods of nine days). As expected, negative associations between milk yield and the frequency of self-suckling were observed (P<0.05). Goats suckled on their own right teat more frequently than on the left teat. The width of the right teat (measured at the middle of the teat) was positively associated with the frequency of self-suckling after controlling for the width of the left teat. A higher self-suckling frequency was observed immediately after milking than in the other two periods of the day. The frequency of self-suckling by each goat was reduced when animals were supplemented ad libitum with wheat straw in addition to their ordinary feed.  相似文献

An iodophor teat disinfectant was applied before milking by dip or spray to 50 cows and 50 cows were left untreated in each of three commercial herds. The mean incidence of clinical mastitis was reduced by 57 per cent, the total bacterial count by 70 per cent and the count of thermoduric organisms by 32 per cent. These results were not statistically significant, except that one herd showed a significant decrease in total bacterial count. There was no effect on somatic cell count, milk production or milk iodine residues. Atmospheric iodine concentrations increased in the two herds which applied the treatment as a spray, but the levels attained were not likely to be detrimental to human health.  相似文献

An acute outbreak of mastitis and arthritis in a herd of 700 goats required the destruction of all but the few animals that were held for observation. The milk of nearly all of about 400 lactating does contained almost pure cultures of Mycoplasma putrefaciens with counts in 150 samples up to 1 X 10(9) colony forming units/ml. At post mortem examination the joints of both the adults and kids contained a fibrinopurulent discharge. M putrefaciens was isolated in pure cultures and large numbers from joints, tissues and fluid not previously known to harbour this mycoplasma: brain, kidneys, lungs, lymph nodes, uterus and urine. The outbreak was milkborne and initiated by infusion of the pathogen into the teat canal by poor hygiene in the milking parlour and by feeding raw colostrum to kids. All but 12 of the herd of 700 goats were killed or sold for slaughter.  相似文献

Four procedures were compared for isolation of Staphylococcus aureus from swabbing solutions of teat skin and milking unit liners from commercial dairies. In 2 procedures, 0.1 ml of swabbing solutions were added to either 5 ml Vogel-Johnson or Baird Parker broth media and enriched at 37 degrees C, 4 h. Following enrichment, 0.1 ml culture was transferred to modified Baird-Parker agar and incubated at 37 degrees C, 48 h. In the other 2 procedures, 0.1 ml of swabbing solution was directly placed on either blood or modified Baird-Parker agar plates and incubated at 37 degrees C 48 h. Combining results from all methods, Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from 72 of 913 (7.9%) skin samples, and 34 of 268 liners (12.6%). On average, 43.1% (31/72) of the S. aureus isolates were found by the enrichment in liquid Vogel-Johnson procedure. The average isolation percentage for other methods ranged from 19.4% to 25.0%. Isolation of S. aureus from milking unit liner or teat skin swabbing solutions was approximately twice as likely after enrichment in Vogel-Johnson liquid media as opposed to other methods of isolation. This indicates that enrichment in Vogel-Johnson liquid media improved recovery of S. aureus from swabbing solutions.  相似文献

: Factors relating to the occurrence of mastitis were studied on 12 Irish dairy herds with histories of elevated somatic cell count (SCC) and/or increased incidence of clinical mastitis cases. Milk recording data were analysed, housing conditions and calving areas were examined; dry cow therapy, clinical mastitis records, milking technique and aspects of milking machine function were assessed.Herds with a ratio of less than 110 cubicles per 100 cows were more likely to experience environmental mastitis. Herds with inadequate calving facilities, where cows spent prolonged periods on straw bedding, were likely to acquire environmental mastitis. In the majority of the herds, the selection of dry cow therapy lacked adequate planning. The majority of farmers took no action to reduce pain experienced by cows suffering mastitis. Deficiencies in parlour hygiene were evident in all herds experiencing elevation in SCC.  相似文献

A sample of dairy farms in Great Britain with a monthly bulk milk somatic cell count of less than 150,000 cells/ml was enrolled into a 12-month prospective study. At the end of the study, a questionnaire on milking practice and other farm management practices was sent to the 482 farmers who had collected data on the occurrence of mastitis throughout the 12 months. The response rate was 93 per cent. The reported mean incidence of clinical mastitis was 36.9 cases per 100 cow-years. Factors associated with an increase in the incidence of clinical mastitis were cleaning out the straw yard less frequently than every six weeks, more than 5 per cent of cows leaking milk outside the parlour, checking the foremilk, wearing gloves during milking, an average annual milk yield of more than 7000 litres per cow, dipping or spraying teats before milking and keeping milk with a high somatic cell count out of the bulk tank. Factors associated with a decrease in the incidence of clinical mastitis were using a cloth to dry the teats after washing them as part of premilking preparation, using calving boxes for less than 40 per cent of calvings, and using both cubicles and straw yards to house dry cows, as opposed to other housing.  相似文献

This study aimed to examine the teat characteristics in relation to the animal temperament during milking in the Anatolian buffaloes using ultrasonographic, histomorphological and immunohistochemical methods. The teat canal length (TCL), teat wall thickness (TWT), teat cisternal diameter (TCD), teat diameter (TD), teat length (TL), and teat circumference (TC) values in docile (n = 5) and nervous (n = 7) buffaloes were measured at the 0th, 3rd and 6th minute of stimulation. In additional experiments, comparative histomorphology and immunohistochemical examinations of buffalo (n = 7) and cow teats (n = 8) were performed. It was determined that post-stimulation mean TCL values were significantly higher in nervous buffaloes than those of teats in docile buffaloes (< .05). A significant positive correlation between TCD and TD, TL and TC in both docile and nervous buffaloes was noted (< .05). Unlike nervous buffaloes where only 3/14 teat canals were open by 3rd minute of milking stimulation, almost all (9/10) teat canals were observed opened in docile buffaloes. There were fewer muscle but more collagen bundles in buffalo teats compared with cow teats. It seems that temperament of animal during milking effects the milking efficiency, and in nervous buffaloes, probably the stimulation alone may not be sufficient for opening of the teat canal and hence achieve complete milking.  相似文献

AIM: To evaluate the benefit of blanket treatment of all milking cows at drying-off and all replacement heifers one month prior to the planned start of mating with an internal teat sealant on the incidence of mastitis, and somatic cell counts (SCC), postpartum in a 650-cow herd with a mastitis incidence in early lactation of 15% in cows and 26% in heifers. METHODS: Prior to drying-off, lactating cattle were divided on the basis of SCC and mastitis history. Cattle with records of individual SCC >150,000 cells/ml or mastitis in the previous lactation were treated with a cloxacillin-based dry-cow therapy (DCT), while the remaining cattle received no antibiotics. Cattle in each of the two groups were then randomly assigned to receive either an internal teat sealant or no further treatment. Additionally, one month prior to the planned start of calving the rising 2-year-old heifers were also randomly assigned to receive either an internal teat sealant or no treatment. All clinical mastitis cases were recorded for the first 10 weeks after the start of calving, while SCC were measured on three occasions during the subsequent lactation. RESULTS: Data were available from 466 cows and 206 heifers; treatment with the internal teat sealant significantly reduced the incidence of mastitis in both groups. For cows, the reduced risk of mastitis due to treatment with the teat sealant was not significantly different between cows, which, based on their mastitis history, required dry-cow antibiotics and those which did not. There was no effect of teat sealant on the mean SCC of any group at any time-point. CONCLUSIONS: On this farm, treatment of all cows and heifers prior to parturition with an internal teat sealant significantly reduced the risk of clinical mastitis. The benefits of an internal teat sealant were the same when used in combination with antibiotics in cows with a history of mastitis as when used alone in cows with no such history. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These data support the proposition that blanket treatment with an internal teat sealant of all cows due to enter the milking herd can be a useful method of mastitis control. They also suggest that combined therapy with dry-cow antibiotics and internal teat sealants can be beneficial under New Zealand conditions. More detailed research on more farms in more areas of New Zealand is required to confirm these suggestions.  相似文献
