Serum samples from 313 sheep and 95 goats were collected during November 1993 in 26 localities in Alto Adige–SouthTyrol and tested by microscopic agglutination test for antibodies to 28 serovars of the genus Leptospira. At the time of blood collection all the animals appeared healthy with no clinical sign suggestive of leptospirosis. The observed seroprevalence in sheep was 6.1 %, whereas the seropositivity rate for goat serum samples was 2.1 %. The highest serological prevalence in sheep was recorded for serovar castellonis, followed by poi, sejroe, hardjo subtype hardjobovis, copenhageni, and cynopteri. Titres to poi were the only ones found in goats. These findings, which are proof of Leptospira infection in Alto Adige–South Tyrol, indicate that foci of several serovars exist in this region.  相似文献

A total of 1527 serum samples from pigs, goats, sheep, cattle and dogs in Greece were examined by the microscopic agglutination test and 11-8 per cent of them had antibodies against one or more Leptospira serovars at titres of 1/100 or more. The predominant serovar affecting farm animal species was Bratislava, and Copenhageni was common among dogs and the second most important serovar when all animals were considered together. Another prevalent serovar was Australis, but antibodies to Pomona were detected only in goats and cattle.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to determine the occurrence, distribution and antimicrobial resistance pattern of Salmonella serovars in apparently healthy slaughtered sheep and goats in central Ethiopia. A total 1224 samples consisting of faeces, mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and abdominal and diaphragmatic muscle samples were collected from 104 sheep and 100 goats. Salmonella was isolated from 12 of 104 (11.5%) sheep and 3 of 100 (3%) goats. Of the total 624 and 600 samples examined from sheep and goats, 18 (2.9%) and 4 (0.7%), respectively, were Salmonella positive. The 22 Salmonella isolates belonged to 9 different serovars. The common serovars isolated were S. typhimurium, followed by S. heidelberg, S. reading, S. give, and S. poona. Seven of the 22 isolates (31.8%) were multidrug-resistant to various antimicrobials.  相似文献

In 2007, a survey was conducted on the prevalence of antibodies to 19 Leptospira serovars in goats in Poland . Sera were collected from adult females of all 49 breeding goat herds in Poland by applying simple random sampling. In total, 736 sera were tested by the microscopic agglutination test. A herd was considered seropositive if at least one goat with a titre of 100 or more was detected. Herd-level seroprevalence of Leptospira was 89.8 per cent and individual-level seroprevalence varied from less than 1.0 to 85.0 per cent among the herds. Antibodies to Leptospira serovars Zanoni, Bratislava, Autumnalis, Australis and Javanica were most frequently detected. Although 40.3 per cent of seropositive goats had high antibody titres (≥ 400), suggesting recent infection, no relationship with abortions or other clinical manifestation of leptospirosis in goats was detected.  相似文献

Heat inactivation of sheep serum samples resulted in the detection of an additional 9% reactors to Leptospira hardjo that were negative on the initial test of fresh samples. Treatment with EDTA gave results generally similar to heat inactivation suggesting that complement was responsible for the inhibition of agglutination. Tests on heat inactivated serum from experimentally infected sheep and goats revealed enhanced titers or reactions which were not detected in fresh serum.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the prevalence of the two most commonly diagnosed pathogenic Leptospira spp. serovars, Hardjobovis and Pomona, in sheep in a sheep-only abattoir in New Zealand, and to determine the prevalence of kidneys which were leptospire culture-positive collected from sheep seropositive or seronegative to the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional observational study was conducted of serological and kidney culture prevalences of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjobovis and Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona. Lines of sheep and individual sheep were systematically randomly selected at a sheep-only abattoir during 18 May 2004 to November 2004 and 06 December 2004 to 14 June 2005. Additionally, a cross-sectional study examined prevalences in a purposively selected line of sheep from a flock with clinical evidence of an outbreak of leptospirosis. RESULTS: In the study population of 15,855 sheep of which 2,758 were sampled, 5.7 (95% CI=4.9-6.7)% were seropositive to one or both serovars; 44.2 (95% CI=34.6-54.2)% of 95 lines of sheep and 44.9 (95% CI=35.0-55.3)% of 89 farms showed serological evidence of infection. The serological prevalence of serovar Hardjobovis was significantly higher than that of serovar Pomona both at line (33% and 4%, respectively) and individual (5% and 1%, respectively) levels. A low but persistent seroprevalence of Hardjobovis throughout both years suggested low-level endemicity to this serovar, whereas Pomona infections appeared to be sporadic. Leptospires were isolated from kidneys of 8/37 (22%) Hardjobovis- and 1/6 (17%) Pomona-seropositive, and 5/499 (1%) seronegative animals. Of the animals purposively sampled from a farm with a clinical outbreak of leptospirosis, all kidneys from the 13 seropositive animals were culture-positive, indicating a high risk of exposure of meat workers in outbreak situations. Kidneys of MAT-seropositive sheep were 21.7 (95% CI=7.6-61.9) times more likely to test culture-positive than kidneys from animals with negative MAT titres. In general, the results indicated that 13/1,000 sheep slaughtered were potentially shedding leptospires. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated the presence of a definite risk of occupational exposure of meat workers in a sheep-only slaughterhouse to the two most commonly diagnosed pathogenic Leptospira spp. serovars in New Zealand.  相似文献

The prevalence of Leptospira interrogans serovars in dairy cattle was determined by analyzing 464 serum samples from cows on 15 properties in Garanhuns municipal district, Pernambuco State, Brazil. A microscopic seroagglutination test including 12 serovars of Leptospira interrogans as antigens was used. Samples with titres 100 were considered positive. Two hundred and twenty-one (47.63%) of the samples were positive to one or more serovars. The prevalence of the serovars was hardjo (21.98%), bratislava (15.73%), castellonis (11.64%), tarassovi (10.56%), pyrogenes (1.72%), icterohaemorrhagiae (1.08%), pomona (0.86%), wolffi (0.86%), grippotyphosa (0.86%), djasiman (0.43%), canicola (0.21 %), and copenhageni (0.21%).  相似文献

Serum samples from 248 adult dairy goats from 13 flocks with lowered fertility farmed in the Rio de Janeiro region of Brazil were examined for Leptospira antibodies by MAT with 24 serovars, cut off 100. A questionnaire was completed for each herd. Antibodies were detected in 20.8% of these goats, mainly to serovar Hardjo. Risk factors associated with seroprevalence to leptospirosis were the frequency of professional veterinary supervision (OR = 2.35), climate (OR = 2.63) and grazing for more than 2h a day. Flock factors as size, type of milking and offering of food supplementation, as well as the location and topography, the type of animal housing or the presence of silos did not significantly affect seroprevalence. We suggest that a successful control program for goat leptospirosis should include a complete investigation of herd management practices, which could influence in the occurrence of the infection.  相似文献

A serological survey of goats in St Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica, comprising the breeding herd at the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) facility at Hounslow, five commercial herds and 21 family herds was carried out in 1985-1986. The Leptospira microscopic agglutination test indicated that one or more serovars in the Canicola serogroup were the most prevalent. Repeated samplings of goats at ADC, Hounslow demonstrated an increase in portlandvere and canicola seropositive animals following the onset of warmer weather and of icterohaemorrhagiae seropositive animals following the autumn rains and cooler weather. Apart from a cluster of family goats seropositive to pomona there was no geographical separation of reactors to the other serovars tested in the parish.  相似文献

Incidence of abortions caused by leptospirosis in sheep and goats in Spain   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
From 1970 to 1985, 973 outbreaks of abortion in sheep and 262 outbreaks of abortion in goats from southern Spain were studied. Of these, 1.7 and 2.6% respectively were caused by leptospiras, chiefly by the serovar pomona (11 flocks of sheep, 64.7%, and six herds of goats, 75.0%) and in a lower proportion the serovars sejroe (three flocks of sheep 17.6%, and one herd of goats, 12.5%), icterohaemorrhagiae (two and one outbreaks respectively) and grippotyphosa in one ovine flock (5.8%). The mean rates of attach (X + SD) of abortions by leptospirosis have been estimated as 16.9 + 6.5% in ovine outbreaks and 20.7 + 8.3% among goats.  相似文献

A survey of 930 ovine sera and kidneys from 33 sheep was conducted to assess the rate of leptospiral infection in sheep slaughtered in Alberta. Sera were tested for the presence of agglutinins to indigenous serovars of Leptospira interrogans. Kidneys with gross lesions were examined for the presence of leptospires by means of an indirect fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and by culture. Antibodies to serovars pomona and hardjo were present at rates of 1.0% and 0.4%, respectively, in sheep from Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Sera from 120 feedlot lambs shipped from Oregon reacted to serovars pomona, hardjo and grippotyphosa at rates of 1.7%, 61.7% and 59.1%, respectively. Fluorescent antibody test detected serovars (presumptively) hardjo in 52% of Oregon feedlot lambs and grippotyphosa in 32% of the same group, a finding supported by the isolation of both these serovars from a pool of two fluorescent antibody test-positive kidneys. The grippotyphosa strain was highly virulent for hamsters, producing intense icterus and death. Leptospires, presumptively serovar grippotyphosa were demonstrated by fluorescent antibody test in one Alberta lamb kidney. The possibility of spreading leptospirosis by movement of breeding stock through public facilities and by assembling lambs in feedlots is discussed.  相似文献

Serum samples from Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in the Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai and Lampang provinces of Thailand were tested using the microscopic agglutination test against 22 serovars of Leptospira interrogans. A titre of more than 1:100 was used as evidence of infection. In northern Thailand, the seroprevalence was 58 per cent and the prevalent serovars were Leptospira interrogans serovar Sejroe, Leptospira interrogans serovar Tarassovi, Leptospira interrogans serovar Ranarum and Leptospira interrogans serovar Shermani. In western Thailand, the seroprevalence was 57 per cent and the prevalent serovars were L Tarassovi, L Sejroe, L Ranarum, Leptospira interrogans serovar Bataviae and L Shermani. These results were similar to studies in domestic livestock and stray dogs in the Bangkok district. Among the elephants from Kanchanaburi there were significant associations between seropositivity and between the camp and between the prevalent serovars and the camp.  相似文献

A multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method using primer sets of G1/G2 and B64-I/B64-II was validated to detect pathogenic leptospira serovars from canine urine samples. The PCR method was found to be specific and sensitive with a detection limit of 100 cells of Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae per milliliter of urine. The primer set previously designated and erroneously transcribed B64-I/B64-II amplified a DNA fragment of 352 base pairs from Leptospira grippotyphosa and Leptospira sejroe but not from Leptospira autumnalis, Leptospira bratislava, Leptospira canicola, Leptospira hardjo, Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae, and Leptospira pomona. From 100 diagnostic canine urine samples, 5 were found positive for Leptospira grippotyphosalsejroe with a PCR product of 352 base pairs and 6 were positive for other pathogenic leptospira serovars with a PCR product of 285 base pairs. One 285-base pair product was sequenced and found to be 99.3% homologous to the G1/G2 PCR fragment sequence reported previously. All 352-base pair PCR products of clinical samples and pure cultures of L. grippotyphosa and L. sejroe were sequenced. The 352-base pair fragment sequences of L. grippotyphosa and L sejroe were identical. Only 2 base pairs were found different between the sequences from pure cultures and those from clinical samples. Serum samples from 3 positive cases that generated a PCR product of 352 base pairs were tested by the microscopic agglutination test, and 2 were found to be positive for L. grippotyphosa (1:10,240 and 1:5,120), 1 was positive for L. grippotyphosa (1:320) or L. icterohaemorrhagiae (1:320). The results of this study suggest that the multiplex PCR with the primer set G1/G2 and the erroneously transcribed B64-I/B64-II may be able to differentiate L. grippotyphosa or L. sejroe from other pathogenic leptospira serovars commonly tested for in Canadian diagnostic laboratories.  相似文献

From 2002 to 2005, we collected 118 serum samples from 34 species belonging to 13 families of zoo animals in Korea and determined the prevalence of antibodies for 18 serovars of Leptospira spp. using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Twenty-nine (25%) of the serum samples tested were positive for one or more of the serovars. There were no significant differences in relation to genders: 23% and 26% of positives occurring in male and female animals, respectively (P>0.05). However, the seroprevalence for the Leptospira spp. was significantly higher (P<0.05) in herbivores (45%) than in either carnivores (17%) or omnivores (17%). Among the 5 serovars detected in this study, the most common was sejroe (n=27; 87% of all positive reactions). All positive reactions showed low titers (< or = 1:200) and the positives were most frequently detected in 1:25 (58%) and 1:50 (23%) serum dilutions. The highest antibody titer (1:200) was observed for the serovars sejroe (n=1) and bratislava (n=1). We conclude that the exposure of zoo animals to Leptospira spp. is relatively common in Korea and produces low MAT titers, with sejroe being the most commonly encountered serovar.  相似文献

Pathogenesis of 2 Leptospira serovars, hardjo and szwajizak, was studied in pregnant and lactating goats. Although clinical signs of leptospiral infection were minimal, cultural isolations were made from the mammary gland of 2 goats and the kidney of 1 goat inoculated with serovar hardjo (C846). The isolations were made only on solid bovine albumin polysorbate-80 medium supplemented either with rabbit serum or sodium pyruvate. Cultural isolations of serovar szwajizak were made from kidney, liver, brain, urine, and mammary gland samples of 1 goat and the liver and kidney samples of its kids. These isolations were made in only the solid bovine albumin polysorbate-80 medium which had been supplemented with normal goat serum.  相似文献

During 1975 to 1977, serum samples were collected from 101 adult coyotes (Canis latrans) captured in northcentral Kansas. Ten samples were seropositive by microagglutination testing and six of those samples were seropositive for multiple serovars. Our aim in this cross-sectional study was to investigate the seroprevalence of Leptospira spp. infection in herds and cattle and the relationships between seroprevalence and beef versus dairy, size, replacement policy and grazing management in a representative area of beef- and dairy-cattle production in Spain. Herds were the initial sampling unit. Blood samples were collected from 762 dairy cattle belonging to 81 herds and 1238 beef cattle from 134 herds; sera were tested for antibodies against 11 serovars of Leptospira (autumnalis, ballum, bratislava, canicola, castellonis, copenhagheni, grippotyphosa, hardjo, louisiana, pomona and tarassovi) using the microagglutination test. Forty-three percent (36.2-49.5%) of the herds and 8% (6.4-8.8%) of the individuals were seropositive against one or more of the serovars studied. Bratislava was the most-prevalent serovar (24% of the herds and 4% of the individuals) followed by hardjo (11 and 1%, respectively). Grippotyphosa, copenhagheni and tarassovi were more prevalent in dairy than in beef herds (P<0.001, P<0.05, P<0.05, respectively) -- but no significant association was found between herd-size and Leptospira seroprevalence for any of the serovars considered.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of leptospirosis and infecting serovars across livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs) in Trinidad using the microscopic agglutination test with an international panel of 23 serovars. Of a total of 590 cattle tested, 21.5% were seropositive with agglutinations to 13 of the 23 antigens used in the panel. Icterohaemorrhagiae (9.3%), Sejroe (4.1%), Ballum (4.1%), and Autumnalis (1.9%) were the predominant serogroups detected in the cattle sampled (n = 590). Of 222 sheep tested, 5.0% were seropositive with agglutinations to five serovars belonging to two serogroups. These serogroups were Autumnalis at 2.7%, and Icterohaemorrhagiae at 2.3% of all sheep tested (n = 222). Of a total of 180 goats tested, 3.3% were seropositive, all agglutinating to the Icterohaemorrhagiae serogroup, 1.7% to serovar Copenhageni, 1.1% to serovar Mankarso, and 0.6% to serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae. Among pigs (n = 200), 5.0% were seropositive for five serovars belonging to three serogroups. These serogroups were Icterohaemorrhagiae at 2.5%, Australis at 2%, and Ballum at 0.5%. Overall, age and sex of animals were not significantly associated with leptospirosis with the exception of cattle where age was a significant factor for seropositivity. It was concluded that for livestock, leptospirosis may be an important zoonotic and economic disease, particularly in the case of cattle. It is imperative that the impact of leptospirosis on abortion, stillbirths, and decreased milk production in livestock in the country be assessed.  相似文献

Leptospirosis is an endemic disease in Latin America, caused by pathogenic bacteria of the genus Leptospira. It is considered one of the main causes responsible for the negative economic impact on global livestock by causing reproductive problems. The research aimed to determine the prevalence of leptospirosis in cattle, sheep, and goats at consorted rearing in the micro-region of Teresina, Piauí state, northeastern Brazil, as well as to identify prevalent serovars and risk factors associated with seroprevalence. Serum samples were analyzed in 336 sheep, 292 goats, and 253 cattle using microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Overall, 378 samples were positive to MAT, with seroprevalence of 42.9%. The prevalences in cattle, sheep, and goats were 50.5, 40.5, and 34.6%, respectively. All herds presented at least one seropositive animal; the Hardjo/Wolffi serovar association was the most common in cattle and Icterohaemorrhagiae in goats and sheep. Beef production (OR?=?4.9), cattle herd over 35 animals (OR?=?4.0), feeding on pasture (OR?=?6.4), weir and/or stream as water source (OR?=?2.1), and no veterinary services (OR?=?2.9) were risk factors for cattle infection. For sheep, intensive management system (OR?=?5.3), suspended slatted facilities (OR?=?2.2), more than 20 sheep in reproductive age (OR?=?1.9), and absence of deworming (OR?=?3.5) were the risk factors, while for goats, the identified risk factors were sheep herd over 52 animals (OR?=?1.9) and no veterinary services (OR?=?1.8). We conclude that the infection was spreading in consorted herds in this region. Thus, it would be interesting and important to conduct educative activities to farmers on the economic impacts of this disease and the need of preventive and control strategies mainly focused on sanitary measures and animal handling.  相似文献

AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of antibodies to endemic and exotic Leptospira serovars in samples from a serum bank, collected from dogs in the lower North Island of New Zealand. METHODS: Sera (n=466), which had been collected from apparently healthy dogs, were screened using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for antibodies to serovars L. borgpeterseni serovar hardjo, L. interrogans serovars pomona, copenhageni and canicola, and L. kirschneri serovar grippotyphosa. RESULTS: Antibody to Leptospiral antigen was found in 14.2% of dogs tested. The highest level of reactivity was with serovar copenhageni, to which 9.5% (41/433) of sera were positive. Antibodies to serovars grippotyphosa and canicola were not detected in this population of dogs. CONCLUSIONS: Leptospira infection is relatively common in dogs in the lower North Island . CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Vaccination of dogs against leptospirosis should be considered using vaccine containing antigen to serovars hardjo, pomona and copenhageni. The presence of moderate levels of copenhageni antibody in dogs in the lower North Island raises the possibility that this serovar has become established in rodent populations in this region.  相似文献
