Holstein male calves were maintained on conventional (milk to 6 wk of age, fed grain and hay after weaning) and veal (milk replacer only) diets to 16 wk of age. Within each of these 2 physiological states (ruminating or non-ruminating), calves were fed low or high fat diets (ruminating: 3 and 10%; veal: 10 and 18%). Glucose tolerance tests were undertaken at 8 and 16 wk of age in each group. Basal concentrations (4 hr postfeeding) and areas under the response curves for plasma glucose and insulin were higher in veal calves (P < .0001). Ruminating calves fed higher fat utilized glucose more readily (smaller areas under the curves for both glucose and insulin, P < .10) than those fed lower fat. Age did not influence basal glucose concentrations (P > .10), but older calves had higher basal insulin (P < .0001) and greater areas under the curves (P < .0005) for both glucose and insulin after a glucose challenge. Rate of clearance (k) was greater in ruminating calves (P < .001). Though rate of clearance in veal calves was slower, larger plasma pool size caused veal calves on average to utilize glucose at a 15% greater rate per kg body weight than ruminating calves. Whereas fat concentration in the diets did not influence glucose metabolism in veal calves, the high lactose content (> 50% of diet dry matter) of veal diets induced severe insulin resistance in these calves.  相似文献

The present study examined, at identical daily nutrient intakes, the impact of separating protein and lactose intakes across two daily meals on the metabolic and endocrine status in heavy veal calves. Calves were assigned to one of six degrees of separating protein and lactose over the two meals (termed nutrient synchrony, SYN 1-6; 6 calves/treatment). They were fed the protein-rich (P-)meal and the lactose-rich (L-)meal at 06:00 and 18:00h, respectively, or vice versa. At SYN 1, calves were fed with 50% of the daily protein and 50% of the daily lactose intake in each meal. Protein and lactose were iso-energetically exchanged between the two daily meals from SYN 1 to 6. At SYN 6, 85% of the daily protein and 20% of the daily lactose was fed in the P-meal and the remainder in the L-meal. Blood samples were collected hourly during 24h. Mean 24h glucose concentrations increased and insulin concentrations decreased from SYN 1 to 6. Postprandial 5h areas under concentration curves (AUC(0-5h)) of glucose increased with increasing meal lactose content. AUC(0-5h) of non-esterified fatty acids increased after P- and L-meals from SYN 1 to 6. Urea concentrations increased after L-meals from SYN 1 to 6, but decreased after P-meals from SYN 1 to 6. Insulin AUC(0-5h) decreased after L-meals and after P-meals from SYN 1 to 6. Nutrient asynchrony did not affect insulin-like growth factor-1, glucagon, growth hormone, leptin, 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine and thyroxine. In conclusion, separation of protein and lactose intake over meals inhibited insulin responses to a lactose-rich meal in heavy veal calves despite high plasma glucose concentrations.  相似文献

In neonatal calves besides adaptations in organ function there are marked metabolic and endocrine changes. The growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis is basically functioning, but needs maturation. Various metabolic and endocrine traits do not exhibit marked ontogenetic changes after the first week of life, but others remain different from the adult stage. Thus, plasma oxytocin or an oxytocin-like substance and nitrate concentrations are elevated for months. The ability to digest colostrum (C) and milk involves great alterations in structure and function of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. C intake is important for passive immunity, provision of nutrients, minerals and vitamins, and contains biologically active substances. IGF-I, present in C in high amounts, appears to enhance GI tract development and function. For sufficient absorption not only of immunoglobulins, but also of fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins, C should be ingested immediately after birth. The amino acid pattern and the glutamine/glutamate ratio depends greatly on whether C is fed or not. Effects on insulin, IGF-I, and IGF binding proteins depend on time-point and amounts of C fed. After the colostral period calves are almost exclusively fed milk and milk substitutes or weaned. Low iron intake, required for the production of pale meat, besides anemia causes metabolic and endocrine adaptations, such as enhanced insulin-dependent glucose utilization and appears to reduce IGF-I responses to GH. Metabolic and endocrine changes, such as insulin resistance and disturbed glucose metabolism, can be observed in part in association with high feeding intensity in veal calves.  相似文献

In ruminal drinkers (RD) ingested milk is transported into the rumen and not into the abomasum. Because this is followed by changes in digestibility and absorption, we have tested whether this is associated with postprandial metabolic and endocrine changes. Unweaned, bucket-fed calves (one RD, two controls) were studied on seven farms. On d 1, after metabolic and endocrine 12-h profiles were studied, RD and one control calf were fed for 10 d by nipple, whereas the other control calf was fed by bucket. On d 11, metabolic and endocrine 12-h profiles were again studied. On d 1, mean plasma concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, urea, insulin, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and leptin were significantly different between RD and controls, whereas mean concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), total protein, albumin, and glucagon did not differ significantly among groups. In RD concentrations of glucose, NEFA, insulin, growth hormone, IGF-1, and T4 were higher, and of urea were lower on d 11 than on d 1. Glucose and insulin concentrations increased postprandially in healthy calves on d 1, but barely in RD and remained lower than in controls, and there was no rise of NEFA and triglyceride concentrations on d 1 after the initial postprandial decrease in RD, in contrast to controls. But on d 11 postprandial responses of these four traits were similar in RD and controls and urea and T4 concentrations on d 11 became normalized. However, glucose and T3 concentrations in RD on d 11 were still lower than in one or both control groups. In conclusion, various metabolic and endocrine traits in RD differed from healthy controls. Drinking by floating nipple instead of drinking from bucket for 10 d normalized several metabolic and endocrine traits in RD.  相似文献

Colostrum intake influences growth and development of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) in several species and colostral insulin-like growth factors I and II (IGF-I and IGF-II), and insulin are involved in neonatal intestinal tissue growth. We have studied IGF type 1, IGF type 2, and insulin receptors in the intestine of 8-day-old calves fed different amounts of colostrum or only milk replacer. Calves were fed colostrum of the first six milkings on the first 3 days and then milk replacer (GrC(6)) or colostrum only once and then milk replacer (GrC(1)) or they were fed only milk replacer from the beginning, i.e., no colostrum (GrM). Competitive binding studies and ligand blots confirmed the presence of IGF type 1, IGF type 2, and insulin receptors in mucosal cell membranes of duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and colon. The IGF type 1 receptor number in ileum and total intestine in GrC(6) was greater (P<0.05) than in GrC(1) and in GrM, and IGF type 2 receptor number in total intestine was greater (P<0.05) in GrC(6) than in GrM. Insulin binding was best fitted by a model with two binding sites. High affinity insulin receptor numbers in duodenum, ileum, and total intestine were greater (P<0.05) in GrC(6) than in GrM. The data demonstrate that IGF type 1, IGF type 2, and insulin receptors in intestinal mucosa of neonatal calves are influenced by feeding.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that delaying first colostrum feeding of calves after birth exerts long-lasting effects on haematological, metabolic and endocrine traits and on growth performance, neonatal calves were fed first colostrum at 0–2 and 24–25 h after birth. Delayed feeding of first colostrum for 24–25 h after birth caused reduced plasma levels of total protein and globulin for up to 30 days and of insulin-like growth factor-I for up to 7 days, whereas concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids were elevated during the first day of life. There were no significant effects of delaying feeding for 24–25 h on leucocyte and erythrocyte number, packed cell volume and on haemoglobin levels and on plasma concentrations of albumin, urea, glucose, triglycerides, phospholipids, cholesterol, insulin, growth hormone, 3.5.3'-triiodothyronine and thyroxine and on growth performance. Thus, calves fed first colostrum with a delay of 24–25 h after birth were able to compensate rapidly for nutritional deficiencies on day 1 of life, i.e. there was no evidence for permanent imprinting of haematological, metabolic and of endocrine traits by starvation on the first day of life.  相似文献

Colostrum (CO) contains high amounts, whereas whole milk and milk replacer (MR) contain small amounts, of bioactive and growth-promoting substances, such as IGF-I. An experiment was designed to study the effects of feeding CO or MR on the first 3 d to neonatal calves, followed by whole milk up to d 7, at low and high density. Intestinal absorptive capacity, plasma metabolite and hormone concentrations, and growth performance were measured during the 1st wk of life. Body weight increased (P < .05) similarly in calves fed low or high amounts of CO but did not rise in MR-fed calves. Loose feces were more frequent (P < .05) and absorption of xylose on d 5 was lower (P < .01) in MR- than in CO-fed calves, but there were no effects of feeding density within CO-fed or within MR-fed groups. However, high feeding density within CO-fed groups enhanced (P < .05) total protein, globulin, triglyceride, cholesterol, and insulin concentrations, whereas in the initially high and low MR-fed groups only plasma glucose and insulin after the first meal and plasma NEFA on d 2 were modified (P < .05) by different feeding density. Thus, feeding different amounts of CO partly influenced protein and fat metabolism in calves during the 1st wk of life, but it did not measurably affect intestinal function. However, feeding different amounts of MR, in the absence of CO, barely affected metabolic and endocrine traits and absorptive capacity. Thus, high density CO feeding, and therefore a high supply of nutrients, together with greater amounts of bioactive and growth-promoting substances influenced neonatal metabolism and growth more than a high density of MR feeding containing only small amounts of bioactive and growth-promoting substances. Factors in addition to nutrient density seem to be important for the development of neonatal calves.  相似文献

Morbidity and mortality of preterm neonatal calves are higher than of calves born at normal term, possibly and in part due to immaturity of physiological functions. Physiological parameters were therefore studied during the first week of life in seven preterm calves, born on day 277 of gestation after dams were injected prostaglandin F2alpha and flumethason. Calves were fed colostrum of the first milking for the first 3 days and from day 4 to day 7 the same colostrum diluted with milk replacer. Body weight increased during the first week of life by 2.2 kg. Heart rate and respiratory rate were always relatively high, whereas values of rectal temperature, blood gases, haematological, metabolic and endocrine traits were in the range and behaved similarly as is the experience in full-term neonatal calves. Major exceptions were glucose and insulin, the concentrations of which barely rose postprandially, and growth hormone, the responses of which to growth hormone releasing factor analogue 1-29 were extremely variable and in part very small. In conclusion, calves born 2 week before normal term that survived the first week of life, although physiologically immature, were well able to handle ingested nutrients and to control their metabolism.  相似文献

Effects of different feeding frequencies on growth performance, preprandial metabolic parameters, and endocrine traits were studied in calves up to 28 d after birth and respective postprandial changes were investigated on d 3 and 7. Calves were fed with a computer-programmed automate that allowed frequent daily intakes (GrA; n = 7) or were fed twice daily by bucket (GrB; n = 7) the same daily amounts (pair-feeding) of colostrum and milk. Weight gains did not differ significantly between groups. Plasma protein was higher (P < 0.01) from d 14 to 28 in GrB than in GrA. Plasma glucose increased postprandially in GrB on d 3 and 7 but in GrA only on d 3, and there was a significant treatment x time interaction on d 3 and 7 after feed intake. For plasma triglycerides there was a significant postprandial treatment x time interaction on d 3, and triglycerides were higher (P < 0.05) in GrA than in GrB before feed intake on d 7. For insulin concentrations on d 7 the treatment x time interaction was significant and concentrations 8 h after feed intake were higher (P < 0.05) in GrA than GrB. For concentrations of growth hormone on d 7 during an 8-h period the treatment x time interaction was significant and concentrations from 320 to 340 min after feed intake were higher (P < 0.05) in GrB than in GrA. Plasma IGF-I concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) in GrA than in GrB on d 7. The hematocrit and concentrations of immunoglobulin G, albumin, urea, creatinine, L-lactate, nonesterified fatty acids, cholesterol, glucagon, and thyroxine did not differ between groups. In conclusion, feed intake at high frequency by an automate transiently changed some metabolic and endocrine traits (glucose, triglyceride, insulin, and IGF-I) but had no significant effects on growth performance during the first 4 wk of life.  相似文献

Ten calves which had contracted acute diarrhoea caused by rotavirus, coronavirus and Cryptosporidium were used to test the hypothesis that feeding lactose-hydrolysed cow's milk instead of unprocessed cow's milk improves sugar absorption in diarrhoeic calves. The animals were rehydrated with an orally administered solution containing electrolytes and glucose. Thereafter the calves received one test meal of whole fresh cow's milk whose lactose had been hydrolysed by added lactase and one test meal of unprocessed cow's milk at an interval of 24 h in a cross-over design trial. In comparison with unprocessed milk, the intake of milk containing hydrolysed lactose resulted in a slight decrease of mean breath hydrogen concentration (P = 0.18), but also a slight decrease of mean blood galactose concentration (P = 0.14). There was no treatment effect on mean plasma glucose concentration. Peak plasma glucose and blood galactose concentration tended to be delayed after the intake of lactose-hydrolysed milk, which implies that gastric emptying was probably delayed. The results show that feeding milk which contains hydrolysed lactose does not significantly improve lactose utilization in calves that are suffering from benign infectious diarrhoea.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal microflora of veal calves reared on different diets was studied because the nature of this microflora affects the quality of veal as a result of contamination of carcass surfaces with intestinal contents during slaughter. Diet A consisted of a milk substitute, diet B of milk substitute + straw pellets and diet C of milk substitute + straw pellets + concentrates. In the rumen fluid of calves reared on diet A significantly higher counts of Gram-negative bacteria but lower counts of thermotrophic enterobacteriaceae were found than in calves reared on diets B or C. As for the faecal flora, diets B and C seem to result in significantly lower counts of Gram-negative bacteria and thermotrophic enterobacteriaceae. In 46% of the faecal specimens and 62% of the specimens of rumen fluid from calves fed on milk substitute only, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated in mean counts of 4.1 log cfu/g and 5.2 log cfu/g respectively. P. aeruginosa could not be isolated from any specimen from calves receiving straw pellets. These results indicate that the inclusion of straw pellets in the diet of veal calves may increase the bacteriological safety and keeping quality of veal.  相似文献

Colostrum intake is important for health and postnatal development of neonatal calves. We studied the effects of enhanced first colostrum feeding on growth, health status, and metabolic and endocrine traits in calves during their 1st wk of life. Calves of group CL (GrCL; n = 7) were fed colostrum of milkings 1 to 6 twice daily during the first 3 d of life, followed by milk replacer (MR) up to d 7. Calves of group CH (GrCH; n = 7) were fed colostrum of the first milking during the first 3 d and then colostrum (of the first milking) twice daily, which on d 4, 5, 6, and 7 was diluted with 25, 50, 75, and 75 parts of MR, respectively. Pre- and postprandial blood samples were taken on d 1, 2, 3, and 7 for the determination of various metabolic and endocrine traits, and on d 5 intestinal absorption capacity was measured using the xylose absorption test. Rectal temperatures and fecal scores were higher (P < .05) in GrCH than in GrCL. Plasma concentrations of total protein and albumin were higher (P < .05) on d 7, IgG on d 2 and 3, and urea on d 2, 3, and 7 in GrCH than in GrCL. Plasma concentrations of triglycerides were higher (P < .05) on d 2 and of phospholipids and cholesterol were higher (P < .01) on d 7 in GrCH than in GrCL. Plasma insulin and glucagon concentrations were higher (P < .05) in GrCH than in GrCL, whereas prolactin and growth hormone concentrations were higher (P < .05) in GrCL than in GrCH. Enhanced colostrum intake had no effects on xylose absorption on d 5. Higher plasma protein, urea, and lipid concentrations in GrCH partly mirrored higher protein and fat intake but additionally pointed to higher protein synthesis and lipid turnover.  相似文献

Abomasal ulceration was found in 264 of 304 commercially reared veal calves at slaughter. The incidence and severity of lesions were greatest in loose housed calves with access to straw and fed milk substitute ad libitum. The majority of lesions were located in the distal pylorus. There was no evidence that the abomasal erosions and ulcers found in the majority of veal calves affected their growth rate or were deleterious to their welfare. It is suggested that pyloric ulceration may be related to the diet of veal calves.  相似文献

Twenty-one Holstein bull calves were randomly assigned at birth to 3 groups. Two groups (each of 7 calves) were raised as follows: fed a milk diet alone or fed milk with grain supplementation after 2 weeks of age; studies were done when calves reached 4 weeks of age. The 3rd group was fed on milk with grain supplementation until weaning after which the calves were maintained on grain and pasture. These calves (older calves) were studied at 12 weeks of age. Either propionate (0.28 mmol/kg) or glucose (0.56 mmol/kg) was injected IV in a random order. Samples of blood were obtained from the calves before and immediately after injections were done and at 2, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes after secretagogue injection. Plasma was examined for glucose by a glucose oxidase procedure and for immunoreactive insulin (IRI) and glucagon (IRG) by radioimmunoassay. The IRI response to the injection of glucose was greater in older calves (P less than 0.02). Patterns of IRI secretion, as determined by heterogeneity of regression, showed age differences for both secretagogues (P less than 0.05). Base-line IRG was greater in milk/grain-fed calves than in milk-fed calves (P less than 0.05). Mean IRG response to propionate injection was higher (P less than 0.05) in milk/grain-fed calves than in milk-fed calves. Plasma glucose concentration increased in older calves, but decreased in milk-fed calves after propionate injection. In 1983 a field trial was conducted to rear progeny of performance tested Black and White bulls with 0–100% Holstein Friesian (HF) genes as veal calves. The purpose was to establish the relationship between performance test traits of sires and veal production traits of their progeny, to estimate genetic parameters for veal production and to study the possibilities of selection for veal production.In total 1060 progeny of 55 performance tested bulls were reared, in a specialised rearing unit, to an average live weight of 208 kg with about 300 kg milk replacer per head. Heritabilities were estimated after correction for month of supply and proportion of HF genes of sires and dams. Heritabilities for weight, type score and price at the start were 0.34, 0.29 and 0.19, respectively. Estimates for daily gain, feed conversion and carcass traits varied between 0.45 and 0.62. The net value of the calves, which was calculated as carcass value minus costs during rearing, showed a heritability of 0.44 and a genetic variation of Dfl. 71.00. This indicates that selection for veal production might be effective.No significant relationship could be detected between the performance test in Black and Whites on a roughage diet, and the progeny test for daily gain and feed conversion on a milk replacer diet. This implies that present methods of performance testing are not effective in improving veal production. Index calculations demonstrated that recording the pedigree on the farm at birth and sampling slaughter data, i.e. carcass weight and score for fleshiness of 50 progeny per sire, may be an effective procedure to obtain a reliable breeding value estimate or sires for veal production.  相似文献

Ghrelin action, which stimulates growth hormone (GH) secretion, may alter during the weaning period in calves. Our objective was to compare the effects of intravenous ghrelin injection on plasma GH, insulin and glucose concentrations in calves around the weaning period. Four Holstein bull calves were fed whole milk and allowed free access to solid feeds, and weaned at 7 weeks of age. Measurements were performed at weeks 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 13, when calves were intravenously injected with ghrelin (1.0 μg/kg body weight (BW)) through a catheter, and jugular blood samples were obtained temporally relative to the injection time. Estimated digestible energy intake per metabolic BW transiently decreased at week 7 because of low solid intake immediately after weaning, and thereafter gradually increased. Plasma insulin and glucose concentrations were not affected by ghrelin injection at all ages. In contrast, plasma GH concentrations increased with ghrelin injection at all ages. The incremental area of GH at week 7 was greatest and significantly higher compared with weeks 2, 4, 6 and 9. This result suggests that nutrient insufficiency immediately after weaning enhances GH responsiveness to ghrelin.  相似文献

The effect of clenbuterol on the incidence of abomasal lesions in veal calves was studied in two fattening units. Some of the calves in each unit were treated with 1.6 micrograms clenbuterol/kg bodyweight/day from the seventh until the 23rd week of the fattening period. In one unit the calves were fed milk replacer only and 176 of the 236 calves were treated with clenbuterol. In the other unit the calves were fed roughage pellets in addition to milk replacer and 92 of the 194 calves were treated with clenbuterol. Only in the second unit did the calves treated with clenbuterol have significantly fewer abomasal lesions.  相似文献

In veal calf production plant-based proteins are frequently included in milk replacer fed to the animals. Since soy products, which are mostly used, are known for their high levels of phyto-oestrogens, the effects of these feeds on the veal calf prostate were examined. Goal was to determine whether these compounds could interfere with histological screening for oestrogenic growth promoters. In a feeding experiment, four groups of veal calves fed plant-based protein-supplemented milk replacer (PBM), containing 5% soy concentrate, 5% soy isolate, 5% wheat gluten and 2% potato protein, for 4 weeks were compared to animals fed dairy-based control feed (DBM); animals treated with estradiol benzoate, diethylstilbestrol and ethinylestradiol served as positive controls. Daidzein and genistein levels measured in feed and urine showed high levels of genistein and daidzein in the soy isolate and soy concentrate supplemented feeds. Genistein and daidzein were also found in the urine of the animals that were fed these feeds. Haematoxylin–eosin-stained prostate sections of PBM-fed animals showed slight hyperplasia and some dilated tubules as compared to the DBM-fed group, but no metaplasia, which is used for screening for oestrogenic hormones. The positive controls showed extensive squamous metaplasia. Immunohistochemical staining for cytokeratin 5 (using RCK 103 monoclonal antibody) in basal cells showed a normal staining pattern of basal cells in the DBM-fed calves and extensive basal cell proliferation and squamous metaplasia in the oestrogen-treated positive control animals. PBM-fed calves showed no increase of basal cell staining but showed elongations of the basal cells in most animals, sometimes resulting in circular figures. It is concluded that the feeds examined in this study did not interfere with histological screening for oestrogens in male veal calves.  相似文献
