Thirty-two crossbred wether lambs were assigned to a feed intake level of either ad libitum (ADLIB) for maximum rate of growth or restricted to maintain body weight (MAINT) throughout a 21-d period. At 7-d intervals (d 0.7, 14, and 21), four lambs per treatment were slaughtered to obtain measurements of visceral organ protein synthetic capacity and tissue composition. Protein synthetic capacity was assessed by in vitro [14C]valine incorporation and tissue RNA, DNA, and protein contents. Concentrations of protein and RNA were not significantly affected in most tissues measured. However, for liver, duodenal, and jejunal tissue, DNA concentrations in ADLIB lambs were lower (P less than .05) than in MAINT lambs. Ratios of protein:DNA in most organs were higher (P less than .05) in ADLIB than in MAINT lambs. During the 21-d period, liver and small intestinal protein and RNA mass were higher (P less than .10) in ADLIB than in MAINT lambs, and DNA mass was unaffected. Also during the 21-d period, the average total mass of ruminal protein, RNA, and DNA in ADLIB lambs was higher (P less than .05) than in MAINT lambs. Estimates of valine incorporation and ratios of RNA:protein seemed to reflect protein synthetic capacity of the visceral tissues measured; however, the effect of level of feed intake on these measurements was equivocal. These data suggest that the level of feed intake affected visceral organ mass through changes in cellular hypertrophy.  相似文献

Two hundred ninety-eight Rambouillet ewe and wether lambs approximately 9 mo old from Texas were allotted to pens (29 to 30 lambs/pen). Two replicate pens were fed each of five diets. Two methods of restricting energy intake were evaluated: altering nutrient density (55% vs 72.5% vs 90% concentrate levels) and restricting intake of the 90% concentrate pelleted diet (92.5% or 85% ad libitum intake). Daily gains were highest with the 72.5% concentrate level and feed efficiency was poorest with the 55% concentrate diet fed ad libitum. Altering nutrient density did not reduce energy intake because lambs compensated by increasing feed intake at the lower nutrient densities. Actual feed intake was 89.5% of ad libitum for the 92.5% of ad libitum intake level and 84% of ad libitum at the 85% of ad libitum intake level due to refusal to consume some fines from the 90% concentrate diet. Feed refusal was greatest for lambs with ad libitum access to feed. Average daily gain was depressed by 8% at the 85% intake level. However, feed efficiency was improved (P less than .01) by 20% when intake was restricted to 92.5% of the ad libitum intake level. Differences in carcass traits were small, but consistent; carcass fat content was reduced slightly by restricting feed intake at constant slaughter weight.  相似文献

A trial was conducted in 1983 and repeated in 1984 to measure effects of restricted feed intake and realimentation on weights of organs and on carcass and noncarcass composition. A total of one hundred six weaned lambs from two breeds (Timahdit and D'man) and a breed cross (Ile de France x D'man) were used in both years. Lambs were allotted to one of six feed intake regimens: HH (ad libitum access to feed from 21 to 30 kg); HM (ad libitum access to feed from 21 to 26 kg then 70% ad libitum to 30 kg); MH (70% ad libitum from 21 to 26 kg then ad libitum to 30 kg); MM (70% ad libitum from 21 to 30 kg); LH (restricted to lose weight from 21 to 17 kg then ad libitum to 30 kg); and LM (restricted to lose weight from 21 to 17 kg then 70% ad libitum to 30 kg). Weights of visceral organs and mesenteric and kidney fat showed dramatic responses to alteration of feed allowances. After recovery from 20% live weight loss, weight of liver equaled or exceeded that of both the ad libitum and 70% refed lambs. Mesenteric and kidney fat did not. Refeeding was accompanied by an increase in water (P less than .05) and a decrease in fat (P less than .01) of both carcass and noncarcass components. These results indicate that weight loss of lambs incurred during feed shortage was largely in internal organ weights, and that these lambs can recover these losses during realimentation and undergo compensatory growth with better feed efficiency and lean carcasses.  相似文献

Level of nutrition and splanchnic metabolite flux in young lambs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Splanchnic metabolite flux was measured in young lambs given access to a high-concentrate diet either ad libitum (ADLIB) or at a maintenance level (MAINT) for 21 d. Net fluxes of urea N (UN), ammonia N (NH3 N), alpha-amino N (AAN), amino acids, glucose (G), and lactate (L) across the liver and portal-drained viscera (PDV) were measured in 11 crossbred ram lambs (35 kg) surgically fitted with indwelling catheters in the portal, hepatic, and mesenteric veins and mesenteric artery. During the 21-d period, daily N and ME intakes were 24.6 and 10.7 g N/d and 3.02 and 1.28 Mcal/d, respectively, for ADLIB and MAINT lambs. Intakes, thus, were 42% lower for MAINT than for ADLIB lambs. Net portal fluxes of UN, NH3 N, AAN, and L in MAINT lambs were 46%, 84%, 50%, and 74%, respectively, of that in ADLIB lambs. Expressed as a percentage of N intake, the proportion of AAN absorbed by the PDV was higher in MAINT lambs (P less than .05) than in ADLIB lambs. There was no net portal glucose absorption in either group of lambs; however, net hepatic glucose production in MAINT lambs was 48% of that in ADLIB lambs. There was net utilization of glutamine by the PDV; net glutamine flux in MAINT lambs was 49% of that in ADLIB lambs. The liver utilized AAN and NH3 N and produced UN. Splanchnic tissues modulate metabolite flux following changes in feed intake in young ruminants.  相似文献

本文旨在研究不同饲喂水平对20~35 kg杜寒杂交公羔的生长性能、屠宰性能和器官指数的影响.采用单因素完全随机区组试验设计,将21只平均体重为(19.14±2.37)kg公羔随机分为3组,按照自由采食(AL组)、自由采食量的70%(IR70组)和自由采食量的40%(IR40组)3个水平饲喂,每组7只羊,每只羊为1个重复.当AL组的试验羊体重达到35 kg时进行屠宰试验,测定生长性能、屠宰性能及重要内脏器官的重量和发育情况.试验期66 d.结果表明:不同的饲喂水平对净增重、平均日增重和干物质采食量有显著的影响(P<0.05),生长性能和部分屠宰指标表现为相同的变化规律,即AL组>IR70组>IR40组,3组之间差异显著(P<0.05);屠宰率、净肉率和胴体净肉率组间无显著性差异(P>0.05);AL组瘤胃重占复胃总重比例最高,为67.08%,与IR70组差异不显著(P>0.05);肝脏重占宰前活重比例以AL组最高,显著高于IR70和IR40组(P<0.05).结果提示,饲喂水平对肉用绵羊生长性能、复胃的重量与发育、主要生理器官的发育具有不同程度的影响;本试验结果与NRC( 2007)肉羊的饲养标准有一定的差距.  相似文献

Phospholipids (soy lecithin) are important in the emulsification of lipids and may be able to escape the rumen and influence the absorption of fatty acids in the small intestine. The objectives of this study were to determine the influence of dietary canola seed (high in unsaturated fatty acids) and soy lecithin in high-forage diets on performance, serum lipid metabolites, and carcass characteristics of growing ram lambs. Forty-three Hampshire- or Suffolk-sired ram lambs were weaned at 60 d of age (average 23.6 kg BW) and assigned to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of the following treatments (% of DM): 1) basal diet (control = BAS); 2) BAS with 6% whole canola seed (CS); 3) BAS with 4.9% deoiled soy lecithin (SL); and 4) BAS with 6% CS and 4.8% SL (CSSL). The BAS diet consisted of 70% forage and 30% concentrate and contained 15% CP and 2.2 Mcal of ME/kg. Lambs had ad libitum access to their diet to an average final BW of 52.1 kg. Lambs were bled by jugular venipuncture on d 0, at 4-wk intervals, and 1 d before slaughter. Dry matter intake was not affected by treatment; however, energy intake (Mcal of ME/d) was greater (P less than .01) for lambs fed SL. Feeding SL and(or) CS to growing ram lambs increased (P less than .02) serum lipid concentrations. Carcasses from lambs fed SL were fatter, as evidenced by greater dressing percentage and subcutaneous fat thickness. Feeding CS to growing lambs had little effect on performance and carcass characteristics compared with feeding SL, which resulted in greater energy intake and fatter carcasses.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Three groups of eight-four-month-old worm-free lambs were used to investigate the effect of Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection on growth rate, food intake, and concentration of plasma constituents. Groups ALC and ALI were fed ad libitum, the latter being dosed daily with 2500 infective larvae for 14 weeks. Lambs in group PF were paired to individuals in group ALI and offered the same quantity of food as the infected pair consumed. Hypophosphataemia and hypoalbuminaemia developed in ALI at week 3 and hyperglobulinaemia was present from week 6. There was no significant difference in plasma calcium, protein, urea or glucose concentration between the three groups at any stage. No clinical signs of parasitism were seen in seven of eight ALI lambs and egg counts were generally less than 2000 epg. Worm burdens of 1500-82,900 were found at slaughter. Group weight gain was only 50 per cent of PF lambs which received the same digestible energy intake. Group ALI consumed 15-5 kg dry matter per kg gain in bodyweight compared with 8-6 kg/kg and 9-8 kg/kg for ALC and PF respectively. The infections resulted in extensive villous atrophy and flattening of the intestinal mucosa. Bone growth was arrested and osteoporosis present in five group ALI lambs. The possible use of plasma constituents, particularly phosphorus, as aids for the diagnosis of the early stages of trichostrongylosis in the field is assessed.  相似文献

Variation in nutrition is a key determinant of growth, body composition, and the ability of animals to perform to their genetic potential. Depending on the quality of feed available, animals may be able to overcome negative effects of prior nutritional restriction, increasing intake and rates of tissue gain, but full compensation may not occur. A 2 × 3 × 4 factorial serial slaughter study was conducted to examine the effects of prior nutritional restriction, dietary energy density, and supplemental rumen undegradable protein (RUP) on intake, growth, and body composition of lambs. After an initial slaughter (n = 8), 124 4-mo-old Merino cross wethers (28.4 ± 1.8 kg) were assigned to either restricted (LO, 500 g/d) or unrestricted (HI, 1500 g/d) intake of lucerne and oat pellets. After 8 wk, eight lambs/group were slaughtered and tissue weights and chemical composition were measured. Remaining lambs were randomly assigned to a factorial combination of dietary energy density (7.8, 9.2, and 10.7 MJ/kg DM) and supplemental RUP (0, 30, 60, and 90 g/d) and fed ad libitum for a 12- to 13-wk experimental period before slaughter and analysis. By week 3 of the experimental period, lambs fed the same level of energy had similar DMI (g/d) and MEI (MJ/d) (P > 0.05), regardless of prior level of nutrition. Restricted-refed (LO) lambs had higher rates of fat and protein gain than HI lambs (P < 0.05) but had similar visceral masses (P > 0.05). However, LO lambs were lighter and leaner at slaughter, with proportionally larger rumens and livers (P < 0.05). Tissue masses increased with increasing dietary energy density, as did DMI, energy and nitrogen (N) retention (% intake), and rates of protein and fat gain (P < 0.05). The liver increased proportionally with increasing dietary energy density and RUP (P < 0.05), but rumen size decreased relative to the empty body as dietary energy density increased (P < 0.05) and did not respond to RUP (P > 0.05). Fat deposition was greatest in lambs fed 60 g/d supplemental RUP (P < 0.05). However, lambs fed 90 g/d were as lean as lambs that did not receive supplement (P0, P > 0.05), with poorer nitrogen retention and proportionally heavier livers than P0 lambs (P < 0.05). In general, visceral protein was the first tissue to respond to increased intake during refeeding, followed by non-visceral protein and fat, highlighting the influence of differences in tissue response over time on animal performance and body composition.  相似文献

This study was conducted to describe the dose-response curve relating the concentration of carotenoid pigments in plasma and reflectance spectrum characteristics of fat to the carotenoid intake level in sheep, and to investigate the extent to which incorporation of dehydrated alfalfa in the diet affects the reliability of the discrimination between concentrate-fed and pasture-fed lambs based on these measurements. In Exp. 1, 6 treatments were compared in individually penned lambs: feeding 0, 250, 500, 750, 1,000, or 1,250 g/d of dehydrated alfalfa for 60 d before slaughter. Each treatment (T0 to T1,250) consisted of 8 male Romanov x Berrichon lambs with an initial average BW of 24.8 kg (SD 2.6). All lambs received straw for ad libitum intake and T0 to T1,000 lambs received a concentrate free of green vegetative matter in amounts to produce similar ADG in all treatments. In Exp. 2, 33 male Romanov x Berrichon lambs grazed a natural pasture maintained in a leafy green vegetative stage for at least 59 d before slaughter. Initial BW when turning out to pasture was 14.2 kg (SD 2.3). Plasma carotenoid concentration was measured at slaughter by spectrophotometry. Reflectance spectrum, lightness, redness, and yellowness were measured after 24 h of shrinkage in subcutaneous caudal and perirenal fat. The spectra were translated to 0 reflectance at 510 nm, and the integral of the translated spectrum was calculated between 450 and 510 nm (i.e., the range of light absorption by carotenoids). Reflectance measurement was replicated 5 times, from which we calculated the absolute value of the mean integral (AVMI). In Exp. 1, plasma carotenoid concentration at slaughter (PCCS) increased linearly with mean daily carotenoid intake (P < 0.01). Both subcutaneous caudal and perirenal fat AVMI increased linearly (P < 0.01) with mean daily carotenoid intake and PCCS, the slopes of the regressions being greater for perirenal than for subcutaneous caudal fat. The mean PCCS was greater for lambs of Exp. 2 than for lambs on any treatment of Exp. 1 (P < 0.01). We established the dose-response curves relating PCCS and AVMI of subcutaneous and perirenal fat to carotenoid intake level. The combined use of PCCS and of perirenal fat AVMI enabled discrimination of pasture-fed lambs of Exp. 2 from the lambs of Exp. 1 that received up to 500 g/d of dehydrated alfalfa.  相似文献

This study was carried out to evaluate the immune response and the impact of Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections on the performance of growing Santa Ines lambs. Thirty male lambs, 3-4 months of age, were maintained in individual pens and restrictively randomised by weight into 3 treatment groups: (1) infected group, artificially infected with 2500 T. colubriformis larvae, three times a week, for 13 weeks, and fed ad libitum; (2) Pair-Fed Group, non-infected and fed with the same amount of food consumed by the infected animal of the same class on the previous day; and (3) control group, non-infected and fed ad libitum. Refused feed was weighed daily to assess the food intake of each lamb. Animals were weighed weekly and blood and fecal samples were collected. At the end of the trial, all lambs were euthanized to determine worm burden and collect intestinal tissues and mucus samples for histological and immunological analysis. The infected group presented eosinophilia, increased number of inflammatory cells in the mucosa, in addition to an increased production of specific immunoglobulins against T. colubriformis, which partially prevented the establishment of infective larvae. As a consequence of parasitism, the infected lambs presented reduced serum albumin concentrations and demonstrated severe small intestine lesions, such as villous atrophy and epithelial erosion, which impaired the digestion and absorption of nutrients, causing a significant loss in performance. The infected group presented a 37% reduction in daily weight gain (107.26 ± 10.8 g/day), when compared with the control group (171.07 ± 7.15 g/day). The infected lambs also demonstrated the worst food conversion, i.e., each animal needed to consume on average 10.05 ± 0.52 kg of food to gain 1 kg live weight. The voluntary hay intake depression in infected animals was small, and statistical difference (P<0.01) was seen only on two occasions (ninth and 12th weeks), in comparison with the control group. In conclusion, Santa Ines lambs infected with T. colubriformis demonstrated a reduction in performance, caused by the damages produced by the adult nematodes in intestinal mucosa, and also by the immunopathological changes associated with the infection.  相似文献

Three types of ceramic mini-boluses, B1 [13.8 g; 10.5 x 51.0 mm (o.d. x length)], B2 (16.2 g; 12.2 x 42.2 mm), and B3 (20.1 g; 11.2 x 56.4 mm), were used to electronically identify as soon as possible after birth a total of 545 lambs of 3 breeds: Ripollesa (meat breed, n = 274), Manchega (dairy breed, n = 129), and Lacaune (dairy breed, n = 142). Boluses were administered by a trained operator using a balling gun or directly by hand. Lambs were also identified with 2 types of plastic ear tags in the left (temporary, 1.5 g) and the right (permanent, 4.1 g) ears. Lamb and identification device performances were checked during suckling (to wk 5 or 7) and fattening. At 24 kg of BW, lambs were slaughtered (n = 385) or kept for breeding (n = 144). No differences in performance were observed between the 2 dairy breeds, and their data were pooled. Minimum BW for bolus administration was lower in dairy than in meat lambs (P < 0.001). Across breeds, B1 and B3 did not differ in lamb age (27 d) and weight (9.2 kg) at administration, but B2 required older and heavier lambs (33 d and 11.1 kg; P < 0.01). Boluses did not affect lamb performance, but final readability at slaughter differed between B1 and B2 (97.7 and 95.2%, respectively) and B3 (100%), and between ear tags (temporary, 98.1; permanent, 100%). Bolus recovery was 100% in all cases, but the proportion of boluses found in the reticulum varied among bolus type (83.3 to 93.8%; P < 0.05). Three B1 (2%) were recovered from the abomasum. In a second experiment, effects of the intermediate mini-bolus (B2) on diet digestibility were evaluated. Digestibility of control and bolus-administered, Manchega ram lambs (14.9 kg of BW; n = 8) fed ad libitum with 2 pelleted concentrates and barley straw was assessed in digestibility crates. Feed intake and nutrient digestibility were measured in four 21-d periods, during which lambs received the 2 diets consecutively. No differences in intake, growth performance, or nutrient digestibility were observed between control and bolused lambs. In conclusion, the B3 mini-bolus proved to be an efficient device for identification of lambs before weaning (recommended age, >4 wk; recommended BW, >10 kg), allowing a reliable traceability of dairy and meat lambs until slaughter.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of a long and severe period of underfeeding, followed by a rapid refeeding with a high-concentrate diet, on weight, protein mass, and cellularity of the splanchnic organs in adult ewes. Twenty-four ewes, allocated to four groups of six, were fed a forage diet (50% regrowth of natural grassland hay and 50% wheat straw) either at maintenance (groups M and MO) or at 40% maintenance (groups U and UO) for 78 d. Groups M and U were then slaughtered, and groups MO and UO were subsequently overfed a high-concentrate diet (52% hay, 20% barley, 16% rapeseed meal, 4% fish meal, and 8% Megalac) at 236% maintenance for 26 d before being slaughtered. During the experiment, feed was adjusted to maintain feed supply at a constant percentage of animal requirements. After slaughter, fresh weight, dry weight, and protein mass of the reticulorumen, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, large intestine, and liver were measured. Cellularity was assessed from nucleic acids and protein contents for both ruminal mucosa and muscular-serosa layers, jejunum, and liver. The concentrations of ubiquitin and cathepsin D mRNA were measured in ruminal mucosa and muscular-serosa layers and in jejunum. Underfeeding decreased protein mass of splanchnic organs, especially in liver (-29%) and reticulorumen (-39%). Refeeding previously underfed animals increased protein mass of liver (+102%) and small intestine (+59%). No carry-over effect of the previous level of intake (UO vs. MO) was observed on the protein mass of splanchnic tissues after 26 d of refeeding. Variations in liver mass were mainly due to hypertrophy, as determined by the protein:DNA ratio, whereas variations in small intestinal mass were mainly due to hyperplasia, as determined by the amount of DNA. By contrast, changes in rumen mass associated with increasing ME intake seemed to be related to hypertrophy in the muscular-serosal component and hyperplasia in the epithelial component. The concentrations of ubiquitin and cathepsin D mRNA in the rumen and jejunum were not modified by feeding level, demonstrating that the expression of these genes for proteolytic enzymes was unchanged under these conditions.  相似文献

Intake and digestibility trials were conducted with sheep to evaluate the effect of adding various levels of a typical fibrous grass forage (neutral detergent fiber, NDF = 68%) to a high quality, low fiber (NDF = 22%) brassica forage. Four forage rape:orchardgrass hay diets (0, 40, 70, 100% rape content on a dry matter basis) were fed to groups of six Polled-Dorset crossbred growing wether lambs (39.6 kg) individually housed in metabolism crates. After a 7-d ad libitum intake period, a 7-d digestibility trial was conducted at 90% of the observed ad libitum intake level. Digestible dry matter intake (DDMI) per unit metabolic body weight increased as rape in the diet was increased from 0 to 70%, with increases in both dry matter intake and dry matter digestibility (DMD). However, DDMI was similar for lambs fed the 70 and 100% rape diets, with DMI decreasing to the same relative extent as DMD increased. Digestibility of the cell wall fraction of the two intermediate diets (40% rape and 70% rape) was lower than predicted from component forage digestibilities. This observation suggests the existence of an associative effect similar to that often reported when forage and concentrates are fed in various ratios. Forage brassicas appear to be utilized in the ruminant in a manner more typically resembling a concentrate than a forage.  相似文献

Twenty-five wether lambs (34 +/- 0.9 kg) fitted with ruminal and abomasal infusion catheters were used in a completely randomized design to determine the effects of differing proportions of ruminal and abomasal casein infusion on N balance in lambs fed a high-concentrate diet (85% corn grain, 1.6% N; DM basis) for ad libitum intake. Wethers were infused with 0 (control) or 10.4 g/d of N from casein with ruminal:abomasal infusion ratios of 100:0, 67:33, 33:67, or 0:100% over a 14-d period. Feed, orts, feces, and urine were collected over the last 5 d. Total N intake and excretion were greater (P < 0.01) in lambs infused with casein than in controls; however, N retention did not differ in lambs infused with casein compared with controls, suggesting that N requirements were met without casein supplementation. Total N intake and total N excretion did not differ among casein infusion treatments. Urinary N excretion decreased linearly (P = 0.07) with decreasing ruminal infusion of casein. Site of casein infusion quadratically (P = 0.06) influenced N retained (g/d), with the greatest retention observed in the 33:67 ruminal:abomasal infusion treatment. Dry matter intake from feed decreased from 1,183 to 945 g/d (P = 0.02) in lambs infused with casein compared with controls, but apparently digested DM did not differ among treatments. These data indicate that decreasing the ruminal degradability of supplemental protein above that required to maximize N retention results in decreased urinary excretion of N without greatly affecting apparent diet digestion.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to determine the energy requirements of feedlot Texel crossbred lambs. In a comparative slaughter trial, thirty 11/16 Texel x 5/16 Ile de France crossbred noncastrated male lambs, weaned at 42 d of age (16.2 +/- 2.1 kg of shrunk BW; SBW), were used. Five lambs were randomly chosen and slaughtered after 10 d of experimental management and diet adaptation (baseline group). Fifteen lambs then were fed for ad libitum intake and slaughtered at 25, 30, or 35 kg of SBW. The remaining 10 lambs were randomly assigned to 2 levels of DMI, either 70 or 55% of the ad libitum intake, and were slaughtered concomitantly with lambs of the 35 kg of SBW group. Total body N, fat, and energy contents were determined. In a digestibility trial, 6 Texel x Ile de France crossbred lambs (30.4 +/- 2.6 kg of SBW) were housed in metabolic cages and used in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square experiment to evaluate the energetic value of the diet at different feed intake levels. Net and ME requirements for maintenance were 58.6 and 91 kcal/kg(0.75) of SBW, respectively. Consequently, partial efficiency of energy use for maintenance was 0.64. Body fat content varied from 72.7 to 125.9 g/kg of empty BW, respectively, for 13.1 and 28.2 kg of empty BW. Net energy requirements for growth of lambs at 15 and 35 kg of SBW at an ADG of 250 g were 424 and 553 kcal/d, respectively. Partial efficiency of energy use for growth was 0.47. Texel x Ile de France crossbred growing lambs used in this study showed decreased nutritional requirements than those reported by most nutritional systems.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with second-parity sows fed either 5 or 50% alfalfa meal diets (Exp. 1) or 5, 50 or 95% alfalfa meal diets (Exp. 2) beginning 30 d after breeding and continuing through lactation, 21 d postpartum. Diets in both experiments were calculated to be equal in crude protein, but different in metabolizable energy content. Feed intake was restricted to 2 kg/d during gestation and ad libitum during lactation. Sows were tethered in metabolism crates 45 d after breeding. Total feces were collected during two 5-d collection periods, 60 and 100 d after breeding. Digestibilities of dry matter, fiber components (neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, hemicellulose and cellulose), protein and energy were determined in both experiments for all diets and periods of gestation. In both experiments, there was a reduction (P less than .05) in digestibility of dry matter, fiber components, protein and energy with increasing fiber levels for both periods of gestation. In Exp. 1, the decrease in digestibility of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, cellulose and energy was greater at 100 d gestation than at 60 d in sows fed 50% alfalfa. In Exp. 2, 50 and 95% dietary alfalfa reduced 60-d digestibilities of dry matter, all fiber constituents, energy and protein; these digestibilities were further reduced (P less than .05) at 100 d of gestation. We used 28 crossbred wether lambs to determine the effects of dietary forage:concentrate ratio and metabolizable energy intake on visceral organ growth and oxidative capacity of gut tissues in lambs. Lambs were assigned randomly to a factorial arrangement of dietary treatments consisting of pelleted diets containing either 75% orchardgrass or 75% concentrate fed once daily at either .099 or .181 Mcal ME x (kg BW(.75))(-1) x d(-1). After a 52-d feeding period, lambs were slaughtered to obtain measurements of visceral organ mass and composition and oxidative capacity of isolated epithelial cells. Lamb performance, as measured by DMI, ADG, and efficiency of gain, was greater (P = .0001) for both diets at high ME intake. Likewise, lambs fed 75% concentrate gained faster and more (P < or = .01) efficiently than lambs fed 75% forage. Total digestive tract (TDT; includes rumen, reticulum, omasum, abomasum, and intestines) weight increased (P = .0001) with ME intake and was greater (P = .03) in lambs fed 75% forage than in those fed 75% concentrate. As a percentage of empty body weight (EBW), TDT weight increased with ME intake in lambs fed 75% forage, but it was unaffected by ME intake in lambs fed 75% concentrate (diet x intake, P = .03). Liver weight increased (P = .0001) with ME intake and was greater (P = .005) in lambs fed 75% concentrate vs 75% forage; however, liver weight as a percentage of EBW was increased (P = .0002) with ME intake but was unaffected by diet. Greater ME intake increased (P < or = .02) small intestinal (SI) epithelial and muscle mass of 15-cm sections, whereas jejunal epithelial mass was greater (P = .01) for lambs fed 75% forage vs 75% concentrate. Rumen epithelial concentrations of DNA and RNA increased (P < or = .02) with greater ME intake, whereas SI concentrations of DNA and RNA were largely unaffected by diet or ME intake. The activity of Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase increased in ileal epithelium (P < or = .02) with ME intake and concentrate in the diet, but activity in ruminal epithelium increased (P = .05) with concentrate. Total oxygen consumption by isolated ruminal and intestinal epithelial cells was unaffected by treatment. These data suggest that ME intake and level of dietary forage affect ruminal and intestinal growth via changes in cellular hyperplasia. Additionally, this study supports the concept that ME intake and diet composition alter gut energy expenditure, at least in part, through changes in mass rather than mass specific metabolism.  相似文献

Two digestion trials were conducted with seven crossbred, abomasally cannulated yearling steers (400 kg) to study the effect of level of feed intake on the site and extent of feed and microbial protein digestion. Steers, in a crossover design experiment, were fed an 81.5% steam-processed flaked (SPF) sorghum grain diet at either 95% (four steers) or 75% (three steers) of their ad libitum intakes. At the end of the first trial, steers were switched to the opposite treatment. Dysprosium (31 to 32 micrograms/g) was used as an external marker. Feed, abomasal contents and fecal grab samples were taken at 12-h intervals advancing by 2 h each day over a 6-d total fecal collection period. Organic matter (OM) intakes were 6,102 and 4,570 g for the two treatments. Higher level of intake increased (P less than .05) quantities of OM, crude protein and trichloroacetic acid precipitable protein entering the small intestine, digested post-ruminally and digested in the total tract. The higher level of intake decreased (P less than .05) the percentage of bacterial protein (BP) present in the abomasum and percent post-ruminal BP digestion; however, the amounts of BP and non-BP entering the small intestine and digested post-ruminally were greater (P less than .05) in steers fed 95% ad libitum. Most of the feed protein was degraded in the rumen with both treatments. The genetic upper limit to daily whole-body protein deposition (Pdmax) is an important constraint on pig growth. The Pdmax was determined for a specified pig genotype using N balance and serial slaughter techniques. A traditional N-balance study, involving 36 and 90 kg of BW Large White x (Landrace x Large White) entire male pigs, was first conducted to demonstrate that a highly digestible, nutrient-dense diet (1.54% Lys; 18 MJ of DE/kg, air-dried basis) was able to support the attainment of Pdmax within the constraints of pig appetite. Animals were allocated to set levels of feed intake [set proportions of ad libitum DE intake (DEi), 50 to 100%]. Nitrogen retention increased linearly with DEi up to 25.3 and 35.2 MJ of DE/d for the 36 and 90 kg of BW pigs, respectively, then showed a departure (P < 0.05) from linearity. For DEi of the experimental diet above the latter intakes, which were approximately 80% of a determined ad libitum DEi, the pigs deposited protein at a rate approaching Pdmax. When a linear plateau response model (accepted a priori) was fitted, Pdmax values of 189.9 g/d at a DEi breakpoint of 28.3 MJ of DE/d at 36 kg of BW and 186.4 g/d at a DEi breakpoint of 37.3 MJ of DE/d at 90 kg of BW were found. In the serial slaughter study, 18 female and 18 entire male pigs were allocated to 5 slaughter BW (25, 45, 65, 85, and 110 kg) such that there were 5, 3, 3, 3, and 4 animals of each sex at each slaughter weight, respectively. Animals were fed the experimental diet ad libitum, and whole-body protein was determined at slaughter. Growth data were analyzed by differentiating and combining continuous mathematical functions for BW and body composition. The ad libitum DEi were 27.4 and 50.7 MJ/d at 36 and 90 kg of BW for the entire males and were assumed, based on the N-balance results, sufficiently high to allow expression of Pdmax. There was an effect (P < 0.05) of sex on Pdmax vs. time (days on trial). Over the BW range of 25 to 85 kg, Pdmax was constant for the entire male and female pigs at 170 and 147 g/d, respectively. A 4?×?3 factorial experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of age at entry to feedlot (AEF) and levels of concentrate feeding (LCF) on body weight gain, feed utilization and killing out characteristics of Tanzanian long-fat-tailed castrate sheep. The AEF points were 9, 12, 15 and 18 months, designated as AEF9, AEF12, AEF15 and AEF18, and the LCF were 50, 75 and 100 % of ad libitum concentrate intake designated as LCF50, LCF75 and LCF100, the last representing ad libitum concentrate intake with 10 % refusal rate. Grass hay as basal diet was offered ad libitum to each sheep. Daily feed intake and weekly live weight were recorded for a period of 84 days. Animals were slaughtered and carcass and non-carcass parameters were recorded. Dry matter intake (DMI) of hay decreased while DMI of concentrate increased (p?<?0.01) with increasing LCF. Daily gain in high level (LCF100) was 93.1 g/day, almost twofold higher than that in low level (LCF50) of feeding (39 g/day). Overall dressing percentage ranged from 40.7 to 46.5 % and increased with increasing AEF. The proportion of carcass bone decreased (p?<?0.05) with increasing AEF while that of fat increased (p?<?0.05) with increasing LCF. Age at entry × level of concentrate feeding interaction was detected for DMI, feed conversion ratio (FCR), slaughter body weight (SBW), muscle/bone ratio and bone (as % cold carcass weight (CCW)), but the effect was not regular. Entering fattening at 18th month seems too late, hence to get in the shortest time the highest output slaughter and carcass weights, fattening should start latest at 15 month.  相似文献
