Crossbred wether lambs were used to assess the effect of altered forage:concentrate ratio and metabolizable energy intake on metabolism of substrates by ruminal epithelium using an isolated cell system. Lambs (n = 28; 20.1 +/- 3 kg BW) were assigned randomly to a factorial arrangement of dietary treatments consisting of either 75% forage or 75% concentrate fed once daily at either .099 or .181 Mcal ME x(kg BW(.75))(-1) x d(-1) for 52 d. After a 52-d feeding period, isolated rumen epithelial cells (IREC) were incubated in the presence of an oxidizable substrate with a single 14C label (acetate, propionate, butyrate, glucose, glutamate, and glutamine) at concentrations ranging from .1 to 50 mM, and substrate oxidation to 14CO2 or metabolism to beta-hydroxybutyrate (beta-HBA), acetoacetate, pyruvate, and lactate was determined. For all substrates, oxidation to CO2 was concentration-dependent and saturable within the physiological range. Differences in substrate oxidation to CO2 by IREC at specific substrate concentrations did not affect Vmax (maximal rate of substrate oxidation, nmol oxidized to CO2 x 1 x 10(6) cells(-1) x 90 min(-1)) and K(ox) (concentration of substrate at which half Vmax oxidation rate is achieved, mmoles/L) estimates for the dietary treatments. Production of beta-HBA from butyrate by IREC from the lambs fed 75% forage was not affected by ME intake; however, production was elevated by high ME intake of the 75% concentrate diet (diet x intake interaction; P < .02). Acetoacetate production from butyrate by IREC from lambs fed at high ME intake was greater (P = .001) than from those fed at low ME intake. Lactate and pyruvate production from glucose, glutamate, and propionate were generally unaffected by dietary treatment; however, rate of glutamine metabolism to lactate and pyruvate by IREC was increased with increased ME intake. The observed changes in metabolite production rates across groups did not affect the predicted Vmax and K(ox) parameter estimates. The estimated K(ox) values corroborate that VFA are the primary oxidizable fuels used by ruminal epithelial cells while illustrating that other substrates such as glucose, glutamate, and glutamine would not be expected to be oxidized extensively in vivo due to the high K(ox) relative to substrate concentrations in vivo. In conclusion, the capacity of isolated ruminal epithelial cells to oxidize substrates was largely unaffected by ME intake or dietary forage:concentrate ratio of the diet.  相似文献

To evaluate the influence of mass of ruminal contents on voluntary intake and ruminal function, five ruminally cannulated steers (550 kg) were fed an orchard grass hay diet ad libitum in a 5 x 5 Latin square experiment. The mass of ruminal contents was altered by adding varying weights of modified tennis balls to the rumen before the initiation of each 15-d experimental period. Treatments consisted of 50 balls with a specific gravity of 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4; the total weight of the balls was 7.45, 8.50, 9.25, 10.55, and 11.55 kg, respectively. Increasing the specific gravity of the balls added to the rumen decreased DMI and particle passage rate (P < 0.05) in a linear manner. A second experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of mass of ruminal contents on voluntary intake and ruminal function of both forage and concentrate diets. Five ruminally cannulated steers (580 kg) were fed a 70% concentrate (DM basis) or an orchardgrass hay diet ad libitum in a 5 x 5 Latin square experiment. The mass of ruminal contents was altered as in the first experiment. Treatments consisted of 0 balls added to the rumen of steers fed concentrate diet (control), 75 balls with a specific gravity of 1.1 given to steers fed a concentrate diet, 75 balls with a specific gravity of 1.4 given to steers fed a concentrate diet, 75 balls with a specific gravity of 1.1 given to steers fed a hay diet, and 75 balls with a specific gravity of 1.4 given to steers fed hay diet. The addition of balls to the rumen of steers fed the concentrate diet decreased DMI (P < 0.05) compared with the 0-ball treatment, and increasing specific gravity of balls also decreased DMI (P < 0.01) for both concentrate and hay diets. Adding balls to the rumen of steers fed the concentrate diet decreased particle passage rate (P < 0.05), whereas increasing specific gravity of balls decreased particle passage rate for both concentrate and hay diet. The results of this study suggest that the density of ruminal digesta can have an influence on voluntary intake of both forage and concentrate diets.  相似文献

Four ruminally and duodenally cannulated Suffolk wether lambs (34.5 +/- 2 kg initial BW) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square designed experiment to compare effects of supplemental ruminally degradable protein (RDP) vs. increasing amounts of supplemental ruminally undegradable protein (RUP) on ruminal characteristics and site and extent of digestion in lambs. Lambs were fed a basal diet of crested wheatgrass hay (4.2% CP) for ad libitum consumption, plus 1 of 4 protein supplements: isolated soy protein (RDP source) fed to meet estimated RDP requirements assuming a microbial efficiency of 11% of TDN (CON) or corn gluten meal (RUP source) fed at 50, 100, or 150% of the supplemental N provided by CON (C50, C100, and C150, respectively). Neither NDF nor ADF intake was affected (P >/= 0.18) by protein degradability, but they increased or tended to increase (P /= 0.26) for CON and C100, but increased (P /= 0.33) by protein degradability. However, true ruminal N digestibility was greater (P = 0.03) for CON compared with C100. Ruminal ammonia concentrations were greater (P = 0.002) for CON compared with C100 lambs, and increased (P = 0.001) with increasing RUP. Microbial N flows were not affected (P >/= 0.12) by protein degradability or increasing RUP. Likewise, neither ruminal urease activity (P >/= 0.11) nor microbial efficiency (P >/= 0.50) were affected by protein degradability or level of RUP. Targhee x Hampshire lambs (average BW 24 +/- 1 kg) were used to determine the effect of finishing on concentrate or by grazing ryegrass forage on slaughter weights of 52 kg (N) or 77 kg (H) on tissue accretion and lamb wholesale cutout. When fed to similar slaughter weights, the wholesale cuts of concentrate-fed lambs were heavier (P < 0.05) than the same cuts from forage-fed lambs; however, when expressed as a percentage of side weight, carcasses of forage-fed lambs had a higher (P < 0.001) percentage of leg than concentrate-fed lambs. Increasing slaughter weight from 52 to 77 kg resulted in a 1-kg increase in loin weight for lambs finished on concentrate and a 0.60-kg increase for lambs finished on forage (diet x slaughter weight, P < 0.03); however, the increased loin weight for lambs finished on concentrate was due largely to increased fat deposition. For lambs slaughtered at 77 kg, those finished on forage had more lean mass in the leg, loin, rack, and shoulder than those finished on concentrate, but lean mass in these cuts did not differ between diets for lambs slaughtered at 52 kg (diet x slaughter weight, P < 0.01). At the normal slaughter weight (52 kg), concentrate-fed lambs had 50% more dissectible fat than forage-fed lambs, whereas at the heavy slaughter weight, a 79% greater amount of dissectible fat was observed for concentrate- vs. forage-fed lambs (diet x slaughter weight, P < 0.001). Lean and fat accretion rates were higher (P < 0.001) for concentrate-fed lambs than for forage-fed lambs. The lean-to-fat ratio of forage-fed lambs was higher (P < 0.001) than that of concentrate-fed lambs; however, forage finishing decreased accretion rates of all tissues compared with concentrate feeding, and these differences between forage and concentrate feeding were magnified at heavier slaughter weights.  相似文献

Lambs (29 +/- 2.5 kg) were fed three diets at various intakes to determine whether diet composition or level of intake was reflected in changes in diet digestibility or ruminal fluid characteristics. In Exp. 1, a 90% concentrated, pelleted diet or a whole shelled corn diet with a pelleted protein supplement was fed at three levels of intake: ad libitum and 92.5 and 85% of ad libitum (n = 15). Exp. 2 compared the 90% concentrate diet with diets in which the energy density was diluted to 55 or 72.5% concentrate by including alfalfa hay as a possible method of restricting energy intake (n = 6). Lambs were adapted to diets for 13 d; feces were collected for 6 d and ruminal fluid was collected 0, 3, and 6 h after feeding on the day following fecal collection. Restricting intake in Exp. 1 did not affect DM digestibility or digestibility of CP or starch. Digestibility of ADF was increased (P less than .10) by restricting intake. Ruminal fluid pH, ammonia concentration and VFA concentrations were affected little by either restricted intake level. Digestibility of DM was 4% higher (P less than .001) and starch 5% higher (P less than .001) for the whole shelled corn diet than for the pelleted, high-concentrate diet. Ruminal pH of lambs fed the whole shelled corn diet was higher and fluctuated less than the ruminal pH of lambs fed the high-concentrate, pelleted diet. In Exp. 2, diet digestibility was reduced (P less than .01) and ruminal pH was increased (P less than .002) by addition of hay. Restricted feeding of lambs did not seem to increase diet digestibility or alter ruminal conditions.  相似文献

Phospholipids (soy lecithin) are important in the emulsification of lipids and may be able to escape the rumen and influence the absorption of fatty acids in the small intestine. The objectives of this study were to determine the influence of dietary canola seed (high in unsaturated fatty acids) and soy lecithin in high-forage diets on performance, serum lipid metabolites, and carcass characteristics of growing ram lambs. Forty-three Hampshire- or Suffolk-sired ram lambs were weaned at 60 d of age (average 23.6 kg BW) and assigned to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of the following treatments (% of DM): 1) basal diet (control = BAS); 2) BAS with 6% whole canola seed (CS); 3) BAS with 4.9% deoiled soy lecithin (SL); and 4) BAS with 6% CS and 4.8% SL (CSSL). The BAS diet consisted of 70% forage and 30% concentrate and contained 15% CP and 2.2 Mcal of ME/kg. Lambs had ad libitum access to their diet to an average final BW of 52.1 kg. Lambs were bled by jugular venipuncture on d 0, at 4-wk intervals, and 1 d before slaughter. Dry matter intake was not affected by treatment; however, energy intake (Mcal of ME/d) was greater (P less than .01) for lambs fed SL. Feeding SL and(or) CS to growing ram lambs increased (P less than .02) serum lipid concentrations. Carcasses from lambs fed SL were fatter, as evidenced by greater dressing percentage and subcutaneous fat thickness. Chopped hay supplemented with a volatile fatty acid salt mixture at 20% of metabolizable energy (ME) was fed to 30 Suffolk X Corriedale lambs (mean wt 29.6 kg) to determine the effects of dietary propionate on weight gain, body composition and plasma metabolites. Propionate accounted for 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100% of the salt mixture energy, and acetate accounted for the remainder. Each diet was fed at two levels of daily intake (158.7 and 130.6 kcal ME/W.75). Lambs on the high level of intake lost more (P less than .05) energy in feces, lost less (P less than .05) energy in CH4 and had carcasses with more (P less than .10) water and fat than lambs on the low intake level. Percentage of propionate in the salt mixture had no effect on ME or body composition of lambs. Increasing the percentage of propionate in the salt mixture increased plasma propionate in blood samples taken at 1 and 2 h after feeding (linear, P less than .05). Empty body weight gain per megacalorie of ME above maintenance increased as the percentage of propionate in the salt mixture increased, but not until propionate reached 75% of the salt mixture (linear, P less than .05; cubic, P less than .05). These results show that propionate in the blood has a positive, but nonlinear, effect on weight gain, even when energy intake is held constant.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of forage concentration on sorting, nutrient intake and feeding behaviour of growing lambs. Twelve weaned lambs were exposed, in a crossover design with 7‐day periods, to each of two treatment diets: (i) lower‐concentrate diet (LC; 40.0% concentrate) and (ii) a higher‐concentrate diet (HC; 60.0% concentrate). Alfalfa hay was used as forage source. Sorting was determined by subjecting fresh feed and ort samples to particle separation and expressing the actual intake of each particle fraction as a percentage of the predicted intake of that fraction. Lambs sorted against long particles (>19 mm) on both treatments. On the LC diet, lambs sorted for medium particles, whereas animals fed the HC diet did not sort for or against medium particles. Lambs sorted for fine particles (<1.18 mm) on both treatments (p < .05). The extent of sorting for the fine particles was greater on the LC diet compared with the HC diet (p < .05). Dry matter intake was increased by increasing the concentrate content of the diet. Intake per visit and eating rate increased, and total chewing time was decreased in lambs fed HC diet. In conclusion, lambs sorted most against the longest particles and for the fine particles. Furthermore, feed sorting behaviour is affected by the forage level, and lambs sorted more for the fine particles in the LC diet.  相似文献

Four Simmental steers with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulas were used to examine effects of dietary forage: concentrate ratio and supply of ruminally degradable true protein on site of nutrient digestion and net ruminal microbial protein synthesis. Steers (345 kg) were fed ammoniated corn cob (high forage; HF)- or corn cob/ground corn/cornstarch (low forage; LF)-based diets supplemented with soybean meal (SBM) or a combination of corn gluten meal and blood meal (CB). Diets were fed at 2-h intervals with average DM intake equal to 2.2% of BW. Feeding LF vs HF increased (P less than .05) OM digestion (percentage of intake) in the stomach, small intestine, and total tract. Efficiency of microbial CP synthesis (EMCP; g of N/kg of OM truly fermented) decreased (P less than .05) for LF vs HF (24.1 vs 26.8), but microbial N and total N flows to the small intestine were similar (P greater than .05) between energy levels (average 112 and 209 g/d, respectively). Total N flows to the small intestine were 13.1% greater (P less than .05) for CB than for SBM because of increased (P less than .05) passage of nonmicrobial N. Feeding SBM vs CB increased (P less than .05) EMCP (27.3 vs 23.3) and microbial N flow to the small intestine (127.5 vs 112.5 g/d), but these increases were not likely due to increased ruminal concentrations of ammonia N (NH3 N). Decreased (P less than .05) incorporation of NH3 N into bacterial N and slower turnover rates of ruminal NH3 N for SBM vs CB suggest that direct incorporation of preformed diet components into cell mass increased when SBM was fed. Results of this study suggest that the inclusion of ruminally degradable protein in the diet may increase the supply of products from proteolysis and that this can increase EMCP and microbial protein flow to the small intestine.  相似文献

Twenty-four Merino lambs (mean BW 15.4 ± 0.13 kg, 6 to 7 wk old) were used to study the effects of the addition of 0 (control), 100 (V10), and 200 (V20) g of vinasse per kilgram of concentrate on intake, animal performance, biochemical blood profile, and carcass and meat characteristics. Lambs were assigned to 1 of 3 experimental diets and fed barley straw and the corresponding concentrate ad libitum. When the animals reached 25 kg of BW, a sample of blood was taken and the lambs were slaughtered. Feed intake, growth rate, biochemical blood profile, and carcass and meat characteristics were assessed. Lambs that received the concentrates with vinasse showed a reduced concentrate intake (linear contrast, P = 0.029) and ADG (linear contrast, P = 0.004) and an increased length of fattening period (linear contrast, P = 0.002) as well as feed:gain ratio (linear contrast P = 0.011). Vinasse enhanced ruminal pH (orthogonal contrast control vs. V10 + V20; P = 0.007). Plasma glucose concentrations declined in lambs fed vinasse (linear contrast, P = 0.003), whereas plasma urea concentration increased in animals fed vinasse (linear contrast, P = 0.036). The plasma concentrations of creatinine, triglycerides, and lactate and the enzyme profile studied (alkaline phosphate, alanine transaminase, glutamate oxal-acetate transaminase, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, and lactate dehydrogenase) were not modified in response to vinasse inclusion. Lambs in the vinasse groups had less Na(+) and nitrate and greater K(+) and nitrite plasma concentrations (linear contrasts, P < 0.05). None of the carcass characteristics studied was affected by vinasse (P > 0.10). Meat chemical composition and characteristics were unaffected (P > 0.10), but shear force was greater for lambs that received vinasse (orthogonal contrast, control vs. V10 + V20, P = 0.007). The addition of 100 or 200 g vinasse/kg of concentrate for fattening lambs reduced feed intake and growth rate and increased the feed:gain ratio and meat toughness without affecting any other carcass and meat characteristics.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine effects of feeding corncobs of various mean particle size (MPS) on ruminal, digestive and metabolic characteristics of early-weaned lambs fed pelleted 74.9% concentrate:25.1% corncob diets. The MPS of corncobs in diets was 6.5, 5.4, 1.4 and .8 mm, respectively. As particle size decreased, percentage starch decreased and percentage neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and cellulose increased. In Exp. 1, 28 crossbred rams (seven/treatment, avg initial wt, 15.3 kg) were used in a randomized complete-block design. In Exp. 2, lambs from Exp. 1 were re-weighed (avg initial wt, 16.8 kg) and fed the same diets as in Exp. 1. In Exp. 1 and 2, lambs ingested dry matter (DM) equal to 2.68 and 3.74% of body weight, respectively. In Exp. 1, apparent DM digestibility was unaffected by corncob MPS; however, in Exp. 2, DM digestibility was highest (68.8%) for lambs fed the 6.5-mm diet and lowest (63.8%) for those fed the .8-mm diet. Apparent starch digestibility was high (greater than 98.8%) in both experiments. Neutral detergent fiber and ADF digestibilities were highest for lambs fed the 1.4-mm diet (50.5 and 43.6%, Exp. 1; 39.6 and 28.9%, Exp. 2). A dramatic increase (6.8 to 39.1%) in acid detergent lignin (ADL) digestibility was observed in Exp. 1 as corncob MPS decreased. In Exp. 2, ADL digestibilities were similar for lambs fed the 6.5-, 5.4- or 1.4-mm diets (avg value, 5.9%) and highest for those fed the .8-mm diet (29.7%). Nitrogen metabolism was unaffected by corncob MPS. In Exp. 1, digestible energy intake, corrected for urinary losses, did not differ among treatments but in Exp. 2, lambs consuming the 6.5-mm diet had higher corrected digestibility energy intakes (1,926.6 kcal/d) than did those fed other diets (avg, 1,832.4 kcal/d). Ruminal pH sampled 4 h post-feeding was highest for lambs consuming the 6.5-mm diet (6.25) in Exp. 1 and the 1.4-mm diet (5.89) in Exp. 2. Lowest ruminal pH (5.30 and 5.36, respectively) was for lambs consuming the .8-mm diet in Exp. 1 and the 5.4-mm diet in Exp. 2. Ruminal lactate concentrations were variable within and among treatments. Six growing lambs were used to evaluate the feeding value of two forage‐based diets in a long‐term feeding period by measuring body weight (BW) gain, digestibility, nitrogen (N) retention and microbial N (MBN) yield. The animals were fed imported low‐quality timothy hay (TH) with concentrate diet (THD) or imported low‐quality Italian ryegrass straw (IR) with concentrate diet (IRD) for 9 months. The forages were offered at 2% BW, and concentrate was fed at 40% of forage intake. The BW gain averaged 82.6 and 66.2 g/day for THD and IRD, respectively, without showing significant difference. Average forage intake (% BW) was significantly greater for IR than for TH, although it was not affected by feeding periods. The digestibility did not differ between diets or periods. The numerically greater (P = 0.06) ratio of retained N to absorbed N for IRD than that for THD was prominent. Neither diet nor period had significant effect on MBN supply and efficiency of MBN synthesis. The results suggest that the IR‐based diet can be also used for long‐term periods of feeding to growing ruminant animals as a grass hay‐based diet without any detrimental effects on nutrient utilization and growth performance.  相似文献

Feeding sheep concentrate-based diets increases the oleic acid content of their tissues, whereas the cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) content is increased by feeding forage diets. Both these metabolic transformations could be attributable to increased activity of stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD). Therefore, the effect of forage or concentrate feeding regimens on the fatty acid composition of sheep tissues were investigated to determine whether any changes are related to an alteration of SCD mRNA levels. Twenty-four ewe lambs were randomly allotted to one of three dietary treatment groups: 1) dehydrated grass pellets, 2) concentrate diet fed to achieve a growth rate similar to that of the dehydrated grass pellets, and 3) the same concentrate diet approaching ad libitum intake. As expected, animals fed ad libitum concentrates grew at a greater (P = 0.001) rate (280 g/d) than those fed either of the other two diets (180 g/d), which were similar. In samples of liver and the three adipose tissue depots studied, the concentration of oleic acid from sheep fed either level of the concentrate diet was greater (P < 0.001) than from animals fed forage. This was associated with an increase (P < 0.05) in the ratio of SCD to acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA in adipose tissue and liver. Compared with concentrate-fed, the forage-fed lambs had increased (P < 0.05) levels of the cis-9, trans-11 isomer of CLA and C18:1, trans-11 in all their tissues, although the levels of SCD mRNA were lower. It therefore seems that the increased oleic acid content of sheep tissues in response to concentrate-rich diets is associated with an increase in SCD gene expression. By contrast, the increased concentration of CLA in animals fed forage-based diets is associated with an increase in substrate (C18:1 trans-11) availability.  相似文献

Four beef steers (avg wt 300 kg) fitted with duodenal re-entrant cannulae were used to study the effect of dietary concentrate to forage ratio on bacterial and nonbacterial N flow in the duodenum. According to a change-over design, the steers were designated to receive an all forage (83% alfalfa hay and 17% wheat straw) and an 80% sorghum grain diet. Lignin (ADL) and chromium oxide (Cr2O3) ratio techniques were compared with automated total collection (ATC) of digesta for quantitating duodenal protein flow and efficiency of bacterial N yield in the rumen. Estimates of bacterial protein synthesis and ruminal escape of feed protein based on Cr2O3 and lignin tended to be higher by 8 to 16% than those obtained by ATC. Efficiency of ruminal bacterial protein yield estimated by these two markers tended to be greater than that based on ATC (16 vs 12 g of bacterial protein/100 g ruminal true digestion of dry matter corrected for bacterial cell synthesis). Efficiency values did not differ between diets. Crude protein flow into the duodenum was about 33% greater (P less than .01) for the grain than the forage diet, although protein intake was about 10% less on the grain diet. Duodenal bacterial protein, rather than feed protein escaping ruminal degradation, accounted for most of this difference. In Exp. 1, 72 Targhee lambs (initial BW 22.1+/-.3 kg) were used to determine the effects of energy source (alfalfa pasture vs limit-fed, all-concentrate) and ionophore addition on performance, visceral organ mass, and carcass characteristics. There were no differences (P > . 10) in ADG or gain/ feed due to ionophore supplementation. Lambs that grazed alfalfa had greater (P < .05) liver, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, cecum, and large intestine weights than did lambs fed the concentrate diet. Lambs fed the concentrate diet had greater (P < .01) hot carcass weights, larger (P < .01) loin eye areas, and greater (P < .001) dressing percentages than lambs that grazed alfalfa. In Exp. 2, lambs offered the concentrate diet had greater (P < .001) DM and OM digestibilities than lambs offered alfalfa (89.5 and 91.1 vs 72.4 and 74.2%, respectively). Apparent and true N digestibilities were greater (P < .001) for the concentrate diet than for alfalfa (90.9 and 101.7 vs 77.7 and 91.9%, respectively). Likewise, grams of N retained per day were twice as great (P < .001) with the concentrate diet than with alfalfa (14.9 vs 6.0 g/ d). The greater visceral organ mass and resulting increases in energy and protein requirements in lambs that grazed alfalfa were probably responsible for the lesser hot carcass weight and dressing percentage compared with lambs fed 100% concentrate.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of dietary concentrate level and iv lactate infusion on the urinary excretion and balance of Ca, Mg and P in lambs. In Exp. 1, six ruminal fistulated, crossbred wethers (25 kg) were fed diets of 0, 50 and 70% concentrate for 5-d periods (periods 1, 2 and 3, respectively) followed by 25 d on a 90% concentrate diet (periods 4, 5 and 6, respectively). Collections were made for all days except 6 to 10 and 16 to 20 on the 90% concentrate diet. Dry matter intakes increased with each increase in dietary concentrate until the initial period of 90% concentrate (period 4) when intakes were lowest. Intakes increased (P less than .05) during the latter two periods of 90% concentrate feeding compared with period 4. Rumen fluid pH decreased and rumen L (+) lactate increased with increasing concentrate intake. Blood pH and bicarbonate both decreased with increasing concentrate intake indicating a mild disturbance in acid-base balance. Plasma concentrations of Ca, Mg and P decreased with increased concentrate intake and were elevated (P less than .05) for periods 5 and 6 compared with period 4. Plasma alkaline phosphatase activity and urinary hydroxyproline excretion both increased (P less than .05) for periods 5 and 6. Four of the six animals were in negative Ca balance for the initial period of 90% concentrate feeding, but showed highest Ca retentions for periods 5 and 6. Magnesium and P balance appeared unaffected by increased concentrate intake. Disturbances in Ca metabolism appeared to be short-term and nondetrimental; the animals responded with increased growth and Ca retentions once adjusted to the high concentrate diet. In Exp. 2, four Hampshire ewes (32 kg) were used in a 4 X 4 Latin square design with treatments being saline (.9% NaCl, w/v), L (+) lactate, D (-) lactate and D, L-lactate infused iv in a saline solution to supply .6 mM/kg body weight of each isomer in 15 min. Plasma and urine samples were taken 0, .5, 1, 1.5, 3, 6 and 12 h from the start of infusion. Total urinary excretion of Ca (P less than .04) and Mg (P less than .02) were elevated for all lactate infusions as compared with saline. The effect of ruminal degradable protein source in roughage diets on nutrient digestibility and animal growth was evaluated in two trials using lambs. In trial 1, two qualities of alfalfa and smooth brome hays replaced 0, 15, 30 or 100% of an ammonia (NH3)-treated corn cob negative control diet in a digestion trial using 26 mixed breed wethers (31.8 kg). Fifteen or 30% inclusion of hay increased (P less than .01) dry matter (DM) intake, regardless of hay type or quality. Cell wall intake was highest for 100% high quality brome hay. Positive associative action on digestibility of DM and cell walls occurred with 30% of each hay tested when diets were fed ad libitum. Measured at equal intakes, DM and cell wall digestibilities were affected by forage type X level and forage quality X level interactions (P less than .01), which showed that the magnitude of associative action was greater for 30% of high vs low quality and alfalfa vs brome hay, respectively. Magnitude of associative response on cell wall digestibility was more highly correlated to degradable N (r = .88) than cell solubles (r = .64) content of hay. In trial 2, 72 young growing lambs were allotted to three sources of supplemental ruminal degradable N (NH3, casein, corn steep liquor) superimposed upon two levels of alfalfa hay (0 or 30% of diet DM). Twenty-five wether lambs (34 +/- 0.9 kg) fitted with ruminal and abomasal infusion catheters were used in a completely randomized design to determine the effects of differing proportions of ruminal and abomasal casein infusion on N balance in lambs fed a high-concentrate diet (85% corn grain, 1.6% N; DM basis) for ad libitum intake. Wethers were infused with 0 (control) or 10.4 g/d of N from casein with ruminal:abomasal infusion ratios of 100:0, 67:33, 33:67, or 0:100% over a 14-d period. Feed, orts, feces, and urine were collected over the last 5 d. Total N intake and excretion were greater (P < 0.01) in lambs infused with casein than in controls; however, N retention did not differ in lambs infused with casein compared with controls, suggesting that N requirements were met without casein supplementation. Total N intake and total N excretion did not differ among casein infusion treatments. Urinary N excretion decreased linearly (P = 0.07) with decreasing ruminal infusion of casein. Site of casein infusion quadratically (P = 0.06) influenced N retained (g/d), with the greatest retention observed in the 33:67 ruminal:abomasal infusion treatment. Dry matter intake from feed decreased from 1,183 to 945 g/d (P = 0.02) in lambs infused with casein compared with controls, but apparently digested DM did not differ among treatments. These data indicate that decreasing the ruminal degradability of supplemental protein above that required to maximize N retention results in decreased urinary excretion of N without greatly affecting apparent diet digestion.  相似文献

Intake and digestibility trials were conducted with sheep to evaluate the effect of adding various levels of a typical fibrous grass forage (neutral detergent fiber, NDF = 68%) to a high quality, low fiber (NDF = 22%) brassica forage. Four forage rape:orchardgrass hay diets (0, 40, 70, 100% rape content on a dry matter basis) were fed to groups of six Polled-Dorset crossbred growing wether lambs (39.6 kg) individually housed in metabolism crates. After a 7-d ad libitum intake period, a 7-d digestibility trial was conducted at 90% of the observed ad libitum intake level. Digestible dry matter intake (DDMI) per unit metabolic body weight increased as rape in the diet was increased from 0 to 70%, with increases in both dry matter intake and dry matter digestibility (DMD). However, DDMI was similar for lambs fed the 70 and 100% rape diets, with DMI decreasing to the same relative extent as DMD increased. Digestibility of the cell wall fraction of the two intermediate diets (40% rape and 70% rape) was lower than predicted from component forage digestibilities. This observation suggests the existence of an associative effect similar to that often reported when forage and concentrates are fed in various ratios. Forage brassicas appear to be utilized in the ruminant in a manner more typically resembling a concentrate than a forage.  相似文献

Twenty calves (7 mo old) were blocked by breed, sex, and weight into five groups of four calves and randomly assigned to either a 90% forage (alfalfa) or a 90% grain (50% sorghum and 50% wheat) diet fed at one (1M) or two (2M) times NEm for 140 d. Samples of ruminal epithelial tissue were collected from the anterior ventral sac, and papillae were cut free by hand and used for in vitro incubations and acyl-CoA synthetase assays. Substrates were acetate (90 mM), propionate (60 mM), butyrate (30 mM), and glucose (20 mM). Net productions of beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate from acetate were greater (P less than .01) with the 2M feeding; however, 14CO2 production from acetate was greater (P less than .05) with the grain diet. Net production of lactate (P = .09) and pyruvate (P less than .01) from propionate increased with the 2M feeding, whereas net lactate production from glucose decreased (P less than .01). Uptakes of VFA were similar with 1M and 2M feeding and were about 10-fold greater than uptakes of glucose. Production of 14CO2 from propionate was two- to fivefold greater than from acetate, butyrate, or glucose. Oxygen consumption was greater (P less than .01) with 2M feeding and unaffected by substrate. Activities of butyryl-CoA synthetase (nmol.mg of tissue-1.h-1) were greater (P less than .05) for animals consuming the forage diets. Addition of butyrate inhibited acetyl- and propionyl-CoA synthetase activity by 63 and 92%, respectively for all dietary treatments. Overall, metabolism of ruminal epithelial tissue tended to increase with the 2M feeding. Influence of dietary forage content on metabolism and activity of acyl-CoA synthetases was minimal, but the high-forage diet caused slight increases.  相似文献
