This article evaluates the effects of extensive media coverage of a study published in 2004 regarding the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other organic contaminates in farmed salmon on U.S. import demand for fresh farmed salmon. The study indicated that levels of PCBs differed according to source, with highest PCB levels found in salmon from Northern Europe and lowest in those from Chile. Using a newspaper article index as a proxy for information, a two-stage demand model is estimated. In the first stage, total U.S. import demand for fresh farmed salmon is estimated to determine the overall effect of the information, while the second stage determines if there were any significant changes in market shares of source countries. Results indicate that imports declined by approximately one-third of what would have been in the absence of the PCB media stories during 2004–2006, and that some changes in exporters’ market shares occurred. Health implications for U.S. seafood consumers are discussed.  相似文献

The Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) is estimated to examine the responses for salmon promotion conducted by the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) in the EU Atlantic salmon market. The model allows advertising to shift and rotate the demand curve simultaneously. EU demand is segmented by supply sources of the salmon, namely Norway, the United Kingdom, Chile, Canada, and the Rest of World. Results suggest that a 10% increase in advertising expenditure sponsored by the NSC makes the demand curve of Norwegian salmon and Canadian salmon rotate counterclockwise by 0.54% and 10.3%, respectively, and the curve for the Rest-of-World salmon rotate clockwise by 4.09%. In our empirical case of salmon demand, the impact of advertising-induced rotation on the optimal spending level and the change in producer surplus is significant when the advertising expenditure is greatly intensified, the export volume is huge and the supply is less elastic.  相似文献

The cross-commodity price transmission is an approach to derive meaningful results from the price information, and is mostly influenced by the substitutability and complementary relations among products. Using time series data collected from the National Marine Fisheries Statistics, the present study specified and estimated cross-commodity price transmission models for 13 salmon products imported in the U.S. market. The salmon products are differentiated by form, cut, source/origin, and production environment. The estimated cross-product price transmission elasticity and degree of substitutability among them varied considerably. Whole fresh farmed Canadian and Norwegian Atlantic salmon did not have any close import substitutes in the U.S. market among the salmon products considered in the study. A reduced pricing strategy would result in an increase in U.S. salmon import market share of Chilean and U.K. Atlantic fillet fresh, if the U.S. import demand for it is relatively own-price elastic.  相似文献

The recent glut of both wild and farmed salmon in world markets has forced producers to become aware of the need to expand their marketing efforts to ensure that demand is not outpaced by supply resulting in a further decline in prices. Japan has been a major market for wild salmon, particularly sockeye salmon from North America, since the introduction of the 200 mile Exclusive Economic Zone. As farmed supplies have continued to increase, exporters such as Norway and Chile have turned their attention to this market as well. Up until now, most of the farmed salmon exported to Japan has been targeted to the restaurant market. If exporters wish to expand their market in Japan, they may focus also on the retail market. Prior to any assessment of the potential of the retail market for fresh farmed salmon, it is useful to understand the role that salmon plays in Japanese household seafood consumption.
This paper examines household consumption patterns of salmon in Japan. An econometric model is presented which estimates household demand for fresh and salted salmon focusing specifically on the effects of seasonality, regional location, and prices of other seafood products. Two systems of demand equations, one for each of two regions of Japan, are specified and estimated using monthly data on prices and expenditures to capture the effects on household demand for 12 seafood products. Results indicate that seasonality plays a significant role in the demand for many seafood products, particularly fresh and salted salmon. In addition, these seasonal effects are not necessarily the same between regions of Japan. Salmon competes with different seafood products during different times of the year. A rich variety of factors should be considered when marketing fresh aquacultured salmon in the Japanese retail market.  相似文献

This paper investigates how pricing efficiency of Norwegian salmon exports varies across destination market characteristics. Efficiency is defined as the rate at which individual transaction prices adjust to common market information, and is estimated by dynamic fixed effects panel models with parameters conditional on trade attributes using micro-level trade data. Our results show that contract type (Incoterms) used in transactions can be used to segment the Norwegian export markets into three types: (1) high-value trade to large distant markets, (2) medium-value trade to close high-income markets, and (3) lower-value large bulk trades to lower-income close markets. We find that pricing efficiency is lowest for committed trades over long distance using planes, and highest for less committed large bulk trades to close markets. Despite significant heterogeneity, the majority of salmon price variation (around ¾) is common, providing a clear justification for the representativeness of a salmon price index.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Few studies have investigated salmon consumption and trade in unconventional emerging markets. Using import data, we calculate average per capita monthly salmon consumption in Taiwan, where all supply is imported, and use weighted least squares regression to relate it to economic variables, such as price, income, product types, and the exchange rate. By doing so, we interpret importers’ willingness to import and the features of salmon consumption. Results show complementarity between frozen and fresh salmon import quantities, insignificant exchange rate pass-through effects, and strong seasonal factors affecting salmon import quantity. In addition, the import price elasticity of fresh salmon is slightly larger than one, and the income elasticity is 1.33. We conclude that salmon has already become an important item for Taiwanese consumers, representing a case of globalization and liberalization. By explicating attributes of emerging seafood markets, this analysis will support stakeholders to formulate seafood trade policies and marketing strategies.  相似文献

Data are presented on the current geographic distribution of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in freshwater bodies of Europe. They dwell in 14 hydrological systems, including basins of U lakes and three rivers. Nine of the lakes (Ladoga, Onega, Kuito and others) arc located in Russia, one in Finland (Saimaa) and one in Sweden (Vänern). All the rivers inhabited by freshwater salmon flow within Norwegian borders. Most of the lakes and rivers have good connection with the Baltic, White or Norwegian Seas. Over the past 20 years the freshwater salmon stock in Lake Imandra (the Kola Peninsula) has completely disappeared as a result of heavy human impact. The situation with such non-migratory salmon, which used to be important to fishing and trade, is also critical in all other water bodies. It is necessary, therefore, to elaborate effective measures for protecting and restoring freshwater salmon in the lakes and rivers of Europe.  相似文献

Abstract

In contrast to the stabilization or decline of wild fishery harvests, aquaculture's contribution to the world fish supply is steadily increasing. Aquaculture has begun to have a major influence on the trade of export‐orientated species such as salmon and shrimp. This paper reviews the role of aquaculture in international trade and the research which has been conducted to examine its influence. Despite the growing significance of aquaculture on international trade, especially for shrimp and salmon, formal analysis of the shrimp trade is sparse, only moderate for salmon, and essentially nonexistent for other species. This paper also presents specific examples of how aquaculture has played an important role in international trade. These include an examination of: (1) the influence of shrimp aquaculture and trade on the development of a shrimp futures contract; and (2) the countervailing duty and antidumping case against the Norwegian farmed salmon industry.  相似文献

Abstract

Land-based farming of salmon is emerging for a number of reasons. The demand for salmon is increasing in many parts of the world. In recent years there has been limited growth in production due to binding government regulations and environmental challenges in sea-based salmon aquaculture. This is true both for Norway (sea lice, salmon escapes) and Chile (sea lice, disease problems), the two largest producers of salmon. Growing demand and limited expansion in production have made for a very profitable industry. At the same time, there have been technological developments when it comes to land-based farming (a technology used for smolt production and species such as sole and turbot), and cost of production has changed. Currently, land-based salmon farming is in operation or in development in several countries including the USA, Denmark, and Norway. In this paper, the economics of land-based salmon farming in a Norwegian context is presented, with an emphasis on the relative competitiveness of this vis-à-vis sea-based farming. If successful, land-based farming could potentially have an important impact on the dynamics of the salmon market.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., stocks are decreasing worldwide, and major efforts are underway to conserve populations that are threatened. In a recent effort to conserve the Norwegian salmon, the Norwegian government implemented in 2007 a scheme called National Atlantic Salmon Watercourses and Fjords (NASW), where 52 rivers were given special protection. Here, the scheme is described and it is evaluated if and to what extent the scheme has led to changes in management practice. After the implementation of the NASW scheme, fewer plans for development (e.g. hydropower plants, water abstraction, flood and erosion control) at the within‐river level were accepted for NASW‐rivers than for rivers not in the scheme. However, at the same time, there was a tendency for fewer plans overall being sanctioned in all types of rivers probably due to overall changes in management practices not related to the NASW scheme. In total, these changes could lead to increased protection of Norwegian Atlantic salmon populations.  相似文献

Abstract. This paper describes tests which were made to determine if smolt age at release influences the migratory pattern of three different stocks of salmon, Salmo salar L. The fish were hatchery-reared and released in two different rivers, the River Imsa and the River Akerselv. Based on the tag returns we found that Baltic salmon from the River Neva, USSR differed in migratory pattern from two Norwegian stocks from the River Lone and the River Imsa. A large proportion of the 2+ River Neva smolts stayed in the fjord during the summer and autumn after release. On the other hand, 2+ smolts of the Norwegian stocks left the fjord and migrated to the feeding areas in the Norwegian Sea within a short time after release. The 1+ smolts of all stocks showed the same migratory pattern as the 2+ smolts of Norwegian origin. We propose that the observed differences in migratory pattern are influenced by the developmental rate of the smolts. The effect of developmental rate on the migration may differ among stocks. Our results show that it is possible to develop a fjord fishery by releases of 2+ smolts of Neva salmon. However, such releases must be carried out with the utmost caution, preferably in fjords with no salmon rivers, so that the possibility of gene flow between populations is minimized.  相似文献

Feeding the expected global population of 9 billion by 2050 is a daunting challenge, which engages researchers, technical experts, and leaders across the globe. Particularly, fish consumption in 2030 is projected to be 20 % higher than in 2016 (30 million tons live weight). Salmon farming is one of the main industries that may help in covering the projected world fish demand. Specifically, the largest worldwide salmon exporters are Norway and Chile, representing around 80 % of the market. Therefore, this study aims to analyze strategies to enhance the cold production performance of a typical Chilean salmon company, by developing a simulation model to analyze different improvement strategies for the productive processes in the plant. For three real scenarios, the cold production line throughput was increased between 6.65%–22.95%, where the best case represented an increase of about 330 tons per month. Additionally, we provide relevant significant insights for both practitioners and researchers, based on implementing our methodology.  相似文献

The proportion of angled Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. being caught and released has increased. If individuals are repeatedly captured, this may have fish welfare consequences. Of 995 Atlantic salmon tagged during catch and release in eight Norwegian rivers, 10% were captured twice, while 3% were captured three times within the same fishing season. The probability that released salmon were captured again decreased with decreasing time left of the fishing season, decreased for larger‐sized fish and varied among rivers/years. Increased exploitation rates within the river, indicating an increased fishing pressure, strongly increased the probability that fish would be recaptured. However, the proportion of salmon caught a second time was much lower than the total exploitation rates in the same rivers (which was on average 46%). For fish tagged in the sea, the likelihood of being angled decreased with time since entering the river, which may explain why the recapture rates of caught and released fish were lower than the total exploitation rates.  相似文献

Abstract

There have been several attempts to distinguish farmed Atlantic salmon by origin using trademarks. Whether there exist different regional markets for salmon, and in particular whether the UK market is separate from the market in continental Europe, is also an issue that has received attention. To address these questions, we investigate the relationship between Norwegian and Scottish salmon both in France and the UK, and between Scottish salmon in France and the UK. The analysis is carried out by investigating how the development of prices is related using co‐integration tests.  相似文献

The survival of two Atlantic salmon stocks that inhabit rivers confluent with the North Sea was examined in respect to historical distributions of sea surface water temperatures. The rivers Figgjo and North Esk are relatively small salmon rivers in southern Norway and eastern Scotland, respectively. Wild salmon smolts have been tagged in these rivers since 1965. Tag returns were used to evaluate the survival of salmon in the North Sea. Survival rates of one-sea-winter (1SW) and 2SW fish were correlated within stocks, as well as between stocks. Survival rates were compared with the areal extent of thermal habitat in the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean. A positive correlation was found between the area of 8–10°C water in May and the survival of salmon. A reciprocal negative correlation was also found between survival and 5–7°C water in the same month. An analysis of sea surface temperature distributions for periods of good vs. poor salmon survival showed that when cool surface waters dominate the Norwegian coast and North Sea during May, salmon survival has been poor. Conversely, when the 8°C isotherm has extended northward along the Norwegian coast during May, survival has been good. The effect of water temperature distributions on the growth of postsmolts and other survival factors are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. To estimate the proportion of escaped fanned Atlantic salmon. Salmo salar L., at the feeding grounds in the north-east Atlantic Ocean, samples of salmon caught with long-lines north of the Faroe Islands were examined. Identification of reared fish was carried out using scale analysis. The proportion of fanned fish was estimated to range from 25 to 48% in the different samples, suggesting that high numbers of escaped farmed salmon occur in the Norwegian Sea. The farmed fish were significantly smaller in size than the wild salmon. Although it is suggested that most of the farmed fish are of Norwegian origin, farmed fish of Scottish, Faroese and Irish origin are also believed to be present. If not accounted for, high numbers of reared salmon in fisheries and stocks will seriously affect the assessments of fisheries and stocks of wild salmon.  相似文献

This article explores to what extent escaped farmed salmon from fish farms affect the willingness-to-pay for recreational fishing of Atlantic salmon in Norwegian rivers. This is a first attempt to explore the economic consequences of escaped farmed species in terms of the anglers’ willingness-to-pay for fishing permits working through the relationship between the price of fishing permits and the share of escaped farmed salmon. The empirical analysis is based on the results from a contingent valuation survey conducted in Norway. It is found that the presence of escaped farmed salmon in Norwegian rivers may have severe economic consequences on the willingness-to-pay for recreational fishing with a reduction of up to 85% compared to a situation with a ‘pure’ wild salmon stock.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Quantitative modeling of fish supply, demand and trade is a useful tool for analyzing recent structural changes, such as the rapid development of aquaculture. Existing models are, however, limited by their use of highly aggregated fish categories and assumed (rather than estimated) elasticities. This paper outlines an estimation strategy and a multiproduct equilibrium model for disaggregated analysis of fish supply, demand, and trade. The model is composed of a producer, consumer and trade core, and is specified to accommodate special features of the fish sector. The estimation and modeling strategy also address common data problems, such as heterogeneity of fish types, diversity of production categories, and so forth. The model has been applied to nine major fish producers in developing Asia.  相似文献
