There is inadequate information available to ascertain the length of time seed pieces contribute to the yield and agronomic characteristics of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) under field conditions. Previous studies have not accounted for root system disturbance during seed piece removal. In 1994, 1995, and 1997 a field study was conducted using Russet Burbank to determine whether seed piece removal at each of three growth stages affects yield and agronomic characteristics. A trowel was used to tunnel into the side of potato hills to remove seed pieces by hand either at emergence, at 20- cm plant height, or at first bloom. Control plots consisted of plants with root systems disturbed on the same date as seed removal (disturbed control) or not treated (non-disturbed control). Seed pieces were analyzed for solids, sucrose, and reducing sugars before planting and after removal at each growth stage in 1997. Removing seed pieces or disturbing roots at all growth stages significantly decreased total and U.S. No. 1 yields compared with non- disturbed control. Total yield from plots disturbed at emergence was 37.8 Mg ha-1 compared to 22.1 Mg ha-1 when the seed pieces were removed. Disturbing seed pieces at emergence resulted in U.S. No. 1 yield of 21.2 Mg ha-1 compared with 10.6 Mg ha-1 when seed pieces were removed at the same growth stage. For U.S. No. 1 yield, a difference between removing the seed pieces and disturbing the root systems was still evident at the 20-cm plant height growth stage (15.4 Mg ha-1 vs 20.3 Mg ha-1, respectively). Disturbing plants at emergence or at 20-cm plant height growth stage reduced the number of tubers per plant to 8.8 for both treatments compared to 9.7 for the non-disturbed control. Removing seed pieces at these same growth stages further reduced tubers per plant to 6.9 and 7.6, respectively. Vines of plants with seed pieces removed at emergence were shorter and remained green later into the season compared with disturbed and non-disturbed control treatments. Percent solids in seed pieces decreased from 20.68 at planting to 5.03 at first bloom. Seed piece percent sucrose remained constant from planting through the 20-cm plant height growth stage and then fell to nearly zero at first bloom. Reducing sugar in the seed pieces atplanting and emergence was 0.67%, rose to 1.08% at the 20-cm plant height growth stage, and then decreased to 0.89% at first bloom.  相似文献

The yield and quality response of Russet Burbank potatoes to simulated hail damage was dependent upon the amount of damage and on the growth stage at which the damage occurred. Plots of Russet Burbank potato plants were subjected to 0%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% defoliation at 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, or 14 weeks after emergence. A motorized flail was used to simulate the complex damage that occurs during a natural hail storm. Early season simulated hail damage, when the plants were mainly vegetative, caused yield losses proportional to the degree of damage. Simulated hail damage during the early phases of tuber growth caused minor yield losses (< 5%) at low defoliation levels but severe losses at the higher levels with proportional loss of tuber quality. Defoliation later in the season resulted in progressively less reduction of both yield and quality. At or near maturity, late season simulated hail damage caused insignificant losses unless the stems were damaged enough to prevent nutrition and carbohydrate translocation into the tubers.  相似文献

Adequate soil water is needed for satisfactory yield and quality of potato tubers. With sprinkler irrigation systems it is common practice to apply more water than the crop uses in order to maintain high soil water levels. A study was initiated to evaluate the response of Russet Burbank potatoes to a wide range of daily sprinkler irrigation rates when grown on two soilsa loam and a sand—differing in water holding capacity. The results from the two soils were very different. On the loam soil, yields generally increased with increased applications of water, up to the equivalent of 40 to 50% estimated Et. Irrigation treatment effect on percent No. 1 tubers was inconclusive. In 1978, percent No. 1 tubers increased with water applied up to about 70% estimated Et. In 1980, irrigation rates between the equivalent of about 20 and 80% estimated Et had little effect on tuber grade. Yields and percent No. 1 tubers were depressed at irrigation rates greater than about 80% estimated Et. On the sand, yields and percent No. 1 tubers increased with increased irrigation rates up to about 100% and 80% estimated Et, respectively. Tuber specific gravity was not affected to an important degree by irrigation treatment on either soil. These results indicate that a good crop of potatoes can be grown on a loam soil at daily irrigation rates considerably less than estimated Et rates, while such reductions will decrease yields and grade on a sandy soil.  相似文献

Studies were conducted in 1970 and 1971 to determine the relationships among seed size, spacing, stem numbers and yield of Russet Burbank potatoes. Cut seed sizes of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2 oz whole and a treatment consisting of 14% 0.5 oz seed, 62% 1 oz and 24% 1.5 oz seed were used in combination with seed spacings of 6, 9 and 12 inches. As seed became larger the average number of stems per seed piece increased. Percent stand and plant size rating also increased with larger seed. Total yields increased with an increase of seed size. The highest U.S. No. 1 yield was obtained with 2 oz whole seed spaced 6 inches apart with cut seed of the same size yielding slightly less. Within each spacing, the greater stem numbers per plot resulted in higher yields. However, when combinations of seed size and spacings were used to obtain a given stem number per plot, the higher stem numbers did not result in higher yields. A positive correlation coefficient of +0.982 was obtained between weight of seed piece/stem and total yield.  相似文献

Russet Burbank potatoes were chilled at 25 F (?3.8 C), 27.5 F (?2.5 C), or 30 F (?1.1 C) for various periods of time and were then held at 45 F (7.2 C) for one or four weeks before testing. Susceptibility to injury was quite variable between the two crops and among tubers of the same lot exposed to the same treatment. The greatest amount of low temperature breakdown occurred in tubers chilled at 27.5 F (?2.5 C) for 10 hours. Flesh color, reducing sugar content, mealiness, and amount of sloughing in tubers that survived chilling were not markedly different from those in control samples although certain trends were observed indicating that the quality of chilled tubers was beginning to deteriorate. Chilling increased yellowness of flesh color in most treatments and darkness in several. Chilled tubers had a reducing sugar content slightly to moderately higher than the controls. A three-year study in central Wisconsin with timed foliar applications of maleic hydrazide at 3 lb/A (3.36 kg/ha) resulted in an improvement in quality and a favorable alteration in the shape of tubers of the Russet Burbank potato variety. Application in early and mid-July resulted in an increase in yield of U.S. 1 tubers and reduced yield of malformed tubers. Over 40 percent fewer misshapen tubers were produced when applications of maleic hydrazide were made during July when compared with tubers from untreated plants. Applications made in midor late July resulted in tuber development with a more favorable length to diameter ratio of U. S. 1 tubers, again compared with tubers from untreated plants. Maleic hydrazide applied in early or mid-June resulted in severely reduced yield and increased incidence of misshapen tubers. When applied in July or early August, no effect on tuber specific gravity was found. Maleic hydrazide functioned as an effective sprout inhibitor on tubers from all treatment dates except when applied in early June.  相似文献

Potato seed pieces were hand planted with different spacings in the row and percentages of doubles to determine the effects on total yield and tuber size distribution. The objective was to determine acceptable performance levels for commercial potato planters. Average tuber size increased as the percentage of double seed pieces decreased or as the in-row spacing between single seed pieces increased. Yield of tubers smaller than 113 g was the most sensitive parameter and they increased as in-row spacing decreased and as the percentage of double seed pieces increased. Yield of tubers larger than 283 g increased as in-row spacing increased but only for the first year. Total yield was not affected by the change of in-row spacing or the percentage of doubles.  相似文献

A three-year study of three planting dates and four harvest dates of Russet Burbank seed potatoes was made to determine their effect on plant vigor, virus leaf roll infection, yield, size distribution and quality. Yields decreased significantly with delayed harvest of the seed crop. The incidence of late season virus leaf roll based on visual symptoms increased significantly with delayed harvests. The risk of a late season virus leaf roll infection increased when a later harvest was combined with a late planting. Seed taken from the earlier harvested plots consistently had earlier and more uniform emergence, the greatest vigor and the highest yields. The effect of planting date and harvest date had little effect on size distribution and no effect on specific gravity.  相似文献

Variability in specific gravity of Russet Burbank potatoes was documented in a single 32 hectare field. Maximum variation was 40 units among individual tubers within hills (one unit equals one part in 1000th of specific gravity measurement) and 15 units among hills. Field site variability of 10–15 units was common between sampled grid lines in the field; but bulked samples (truckloads) reduced the sampled variability to 8–10 units. When the samples were taken from bulked lots as opposed to single hill samples, the variability decreased. Grower lots, which were pooled samples from several truckloads, showed specific gravity differences of 2–7 units even though all lots were from the same field. These variations among specific gravity samples should be taken into account when considering total solids content in any lot of potatoes. Degree of russetting of the skin and hollow heart also influenced specific gravity measurements. Measured differences between peeled and unpeeled lots of 10 units in specific gravity corresponded to 2% difference in total solids content. Statistically, the variance of the peeled lot was one half that of the unpeeled lot, therefore, to minimize the measured differences due to skin type, peeled potatoes could be used for the specific gravity measurements.  相似文献

Transformed Russet Burbank and Lemhi Russet clones which contained three different transgene constructs were evaluated for performance under field conditions in Idaho. The transgenic lines were characterized over two growing seasons, using plants grown from both greenhouse produced minitubers (first year) and field grown seed (second year). Individual clones were evaluated for a variety of agronomic and quality properties. Many of the transformed clones showed reduced yield and increases in percent malformed and undersized tubers. Other characteristics, such as specific gravity and fry color, showed less variability. The variation observed in non-transgenic clones regenerated from tissue culture was less than that of the transformed lines. Out of an original population of 57 transgenic lines in tissue culture, maintenance of key agronomic and quality properties of the parental material was observed in only four clones. These results suggest that experiments designed to generate transgenic lines for the marketplace should be initiated with a large number of transgenic clones.  相似文献

The nitroguanidines are a new family of plant growth regulators with cytokinin-like activity. AC 243,654, l-(m)-methoxybenzyl)-3-nitroguanidine, is a member of this family, and has caused morphological and yield changes on several crops. Greenhouse-grown potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.), cultivar Russet Burbank were exposed at 15 days after emergence (DAE) to AC 243,654 at 0.5 and 1 kg/ha. The effects of AC 243,654 on plant growth and tuber yields were determined at 7, 14, 28, 42, 56, and 70 days after treatment (DAT). At 14 to 42 DAT, AC 243,654 increased the number of branches. Stolon length was increased at 7 and 14 DAT, and root length was decreased at 7 DAT. Stem length was not affected. Plant weight was higher in treated plants than in checks at 14 DAT but not at 28 DAT. At 42 DAT, the check weight was decreasing while the weight of the treated plants was maintained. The slower weight loss in treated plants is attributed to the anti-senescence effect of AC 243,654. Treated plants had greater tuber yield and number than the checks at tuber initiation, 7 DAT. From 14 DAT to the final harvest at 70 DAT, the treated plants produced higher yields than the checks of tubers over 25.4 mm. This resulted in higher total yields at 42, 56 and 70 DAT, but not at 14 and 28 DAT due to the proportionately lower yield of tubers less than 25.4 mm  相似文献

Studies were made to determine factors which influence reconditioning of Russet Burbank tubers. Tubers from plants grown under low fertility were more difficult to recondition than tubers from plants adequately fertilized. Low specific gravity potatoes were also more difficult to recondition than high specific gravity potatoes even though the initial sugar content was approximately equal. The stem portion of Russet Burbank tubers lost considerably less sugars than the bud portion during the reconditioning process. It appears that factors which are responsible for high sugar development are also responsible for difficulty in sugar loss. Results also indicate greater difficulty in reconditioning early in the storage period with the loss of sugars becoming easier as the storage season progressed into spring.  相似文献

Five storage temperatures and three planting dates were used to obtain differences in seed performance. As seed storage temperature increased, average stem number per seed piece significantly increased. Stem number also increased with later planting dates. Germination tests, conducted under controlled temperatures, resulted in a curvilinear response with the least stems per seed piece at 10°C. a maximum stem number at 16°C and a slight decline in number at 21°C. The major effect of planting date was manifested through differences in germinating temperatures which resulted in increased stem number with later plantings. Yield of U.S. No. 1 tubers (5cm or 112 gm minimum) declined significantly as stem number increased. In the first planting, the correlation coefficient between stem number per seed piece and yield was r = ?0.95. Increased stem number and declining yield were attributed to advanced physiological age resulting from exposure to higher temperatures in storage and in the field. As stem number increased with planting date, tuber number also increased. The correlation coefficient between stem and tuber number for the first planting date was r = 0.92. The relationship declined significantly on the third planting date to r = 0.46. From these results it was concluded that economic yields are influenced by stem and tuber number which in turn can be manipulated by control of seed storage temperatures and planting dates.  相似文献

Small seed pieces decreased yield and number of tubers. Both seed tuber and seed piece size affected the percentage of tubers with hollow heart. Hollow heart increased from 14 to 22% as the seed tuber size increased from 57 to 228 g and decreased from 27 to 19% as the seed piece size increased from 28 to 57 g. The least hollow heart (11%) occurred in tubers of plants grown from 57 g whole seed pieces and the most (26%) in tubers of plants grown from 228 g seed tubers cut into 28 g seed pieces. Hollow heart was positively correlated with the mean tuber size and negatively correlated with the number of mainstems per hill, total yield, and total number of tubers.  相似文献
