In Europe a heterotic pattern commonly used in maize breeding is “American Dent × European Flint”. Maize breeding programs generally use only a small portion of the useful genetic variability present in the local open-pollinated varieties which, otherwise, have a poor performance that hampers their use. Two maize composites, EZS33 formed by open-pollinated flint varieties from dry or Mediterranean Spain, and EZS34 from USA dent populations, were developed in Zaragoza (Spain). Both were subjected to three cycles of full-sib reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS) for yield. The objective of our study was to evaluate after three cycles of selection the effect of RRS. The selection significantly increased yield in the population crosses (3.0 % per cycle) and in the crosses of the populations with testers of different origin. The correlated responses for the population crosses in other agronomic traits like flowering and early vigor were in the desired direction, but plant height was reduced. We propose that stover yield or related traits could be included in selection programs as selection criteria to prevent their decline. The adapted population increased the frequency of favorable alleles for yield, but the inbreeding depression counteracted their effect on the mean. RRS had a positive effect on other traits. According to our data, RRS can be useful to develop improved populations from which it would be possible to develop lines with improved both specific and general combining ability with different heterotic groups. We conclude that the heterotic pattern “Mediterranean Spain × US Dent” is potentially very useful for maize breeding for adaptation to Mediterranean conditions and an interesting source of cultivars for low-input agriculture.  相似文献

Identification of drought‐tolerant and ‐resistant varieties of cassava is of paramount importance for the maximization of productivity potential in drought‐prone areas. Nine improved cassava varieties developed in humid and subhumid agro‐ecologies were evaluated for their growth responses and adaptability in the dry savannas of Nigeria. Field trials were set up in two cropping seasons at three different locations. Parameters evaluated included fresh root yield (FRY), fresh shoot yield (FSY), cumulative leaves formed (CLF), cumulative leaf scars (CLS), root dry‐matter content (DMC), harvest index (HI), and root cyanogenic potential (CNp). Results demonstrated that varietal response differed with water table site, implying different adaptation responses of varieties to the water regime. Variations in all characters studied were significantly (P<0.05) influenced by genotype, suggesting a strong genetic basis for the phenotypic differences amongst varieties. Compared with variation attributable to location, the genotypic components were strong for FRY, FSY, CLF, CLS, HI and DMC. HI and DMC were not significantly affected by location. CNp tended to increase with increasing drought stress. The significance of genotype × environment effects for FRY suggested that genotypes may be selected for specific adaptation for drought‐prone environments. The poor adaptability responses of the majority of the varieties implied that an agro‐ecologically targeted breeding scheme for the dry savanna would be a more appropriate approach for the development of drought‐tolerant varieties.  相似文献

Sixty varieties of kale (Brassica oleracea acephala group) from Galicia (northwestern Spain) were evaluated in two locations along with four commercial kale varieties. Data on 26 agronomic and morphological traits and five nutritional traits (crude fibre, acid detergent fibre, crude protein, calcium and potassium) were recorded. The objectives of this work were (i) to know the potential ability of kale as an horticultural crop, (ii) to assess the characteristics of local varieties of Galician kale in order to select those with the highest yield and a good adaptation to obtain improved varieties. In most traits, significant differences between locations were found, while varieties × location interaction was not significant for most of them. Significant differences were found among varieties and a high intravarietal variability was noticed in some traits. Galician kale germplasm displayed variability in the most important agronomic traits. They are characterized by their long cycles, their susceptibility to Lepidoptera pests, their good yield and adaptation to Galician conditions and their high calcium content. Four local varieties (MBG-BRS0468, MBG-BRS0476, MBG-BRS0477 and MBG-BRS0494) were the most promising for vegetal and fodder use. One of them showed the best early vigor (MBG-BRS0366) and two of them were the most resistant to Lepidoptera pest (MBG-BRS0060 and MBG-BRS0223). Kale varieties showed a high crude fibre content, and also a high acid detergent fibre, crude protein and calcium content. The varieties MBG-BRS0106, MBG-BRS0281, MBG-BRS0335 and MBG-BRS0464 could be candidates for future breeding programs since they had a good agronomic performance and a high calcium content.  相似文献

Summary As the seed market for forage grasses in France is rather limited, proposed varieties should have a broad adaptation to a range of different environment. Therefore a comprehensive strategy of multisite recurrent selection has been devised for perennial reyegrass. It is based on an experimental cooperative network between National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) and private companies. A pragmatic approach has been retained that gives a compromise between theoretical and practical considerations. The method is illustrated by results from a breeding population consisting of 33 half-sib families derived from a local germplasm. Family selection with an intensity of 30% was applied to yield and persistence data from sward plot trials. The strategy was based on a multisite index where trait x location combinations are considered as different traits and given equal economic weights. Improvements of 10–15% were expected for summer-autumn production and persistence. For spaced plant nursery traits, a subset of locations was chosen according to a multiplicative model decomposition of G x E interaction, where a 10% mass selection was practised. This leads to interesting progress on crown rust tolerance, growth scores, leafiness and persistence. Moreover, the expected indirect responses from selection on spaced plant traits to sward traits and vice-versa are almost all favourable. As significant improvements are expected for most traits in all locations, this programme should allow to increase the general adaptation of ryegrass varieties for France.  相似文献

Differences among open-pollinated tropical maize ( Zea mays L.) varieties in seedling development and establishment on compacted soils were studied. Soil dry density was used as an index of compaction. Three soil compaction levels and 12 traits associated with development and establishment of maize seedlings were investigated. A control (without compaction) was also included. Varietal differences were observed for most traits measured. Genetic differences for seedling development on compacted soil were detected. Varietal differences contributed about three times the contribution of compaction to total variability in the traits. Better seedling development and performance were obtained in moderately compacted soil than in the control. Shoot length, shoot dry weight and per cent dry matter in roots were good indicators of the tolerance of maize seedlings to compaction. A physiological strategy for maize seedling establishment on compacted soil was proposed. The implications of the results for seed testing were also highlighted. It was concluded that consideration should be given to the genotype of maize destined for use in ecologies prone to high soil densities. All varieties of maize grown in an agroecological zone could be screened to identify genotypes tolerant of higher soil densities. The seeds could then be multiplied and distributed to farmers.  相似文献

Cocoyam (Xanthosoma spp.), the third most important starch food crop in Nicaragua, can be cultivated countrywide. However, very little information about the field performance and genetic background of the different genotypes is available. In this study, the agronomic performance of three purple genotypes established in four locations with different climatic conditions, were evaluated during 2 years. Phenotypic characteristics, yield, and virus incidence were assessed and the time at which the different genotypes reached their physiological maturity was estimated. The trials were based on randomized complete block design with three or four blocks. Genotype × location interaction was found both for phenotypic and yield traits. A differential response of the genotypes to the varying climatic conditions at the locations is suggested to be one of the causes to the interaction. The unpredictable and variable climate in the area where cocoyam traditionally has been grown is one possible explanation to the frequent genotype × year interaction at that location. Other locations with more stable climate only showed an interaction between genotype and year in a few traits. The genotypic differences regarding the time when the area of the largest leaf reached its maximum and the variation in presence of sprouts and roots on the cormels at harvest, indicate differences in optimal harvest time between genotypes. The percentage of plants infected with dasheen mosaic virus (DMV) differed across locations but not between genotypes.  相似文献

Glucosinolate levels in leaves were determined in a collection of 36 varieties of nabicol (Brassica napus pabularia group) from northwestern Spain grown at two locations. Crude protein, acid detergent fibre, and sensory traits were also assessed by a consumer panel. The objectives were to determine the diversity among varieties in total glucosinolate content and glucosinolate profile and to evaluate their sensory attributes in relation to glucosinolate content for breeding purposes. Eight glucosinolates were identified, being the aliphatic glucosinolates, glucobrassicanapin, progoitrin, and gluconapin the most abundant. Glucosinolate composition varied between locations although the glucosinolate pattern was not significantly influenced. Differences in total glucosinolate content, glucosinolate profile, protein, acid detergent fibre, and flavour were found among varieties. The total glucosinolate content ranged from 1.4 μmol g−1 to 41.0 μmol g−1 dw at one location and from 1.2 μmol g−1 to 7.6 μmol g−1 dw at the other location. Sensory analysis comparing bitterness and flavour with variation in glucosinolate, gluconapin, progoitrin, and glucobrassicanapin concentrations suggested that other phytochemicals are probably involved on the characteristic flavour. The variety MBG-BRS0035 had high total glucosinolate, glucobrassicanapin, and gluconapin contents at both locations and could be included in breeding programs to improve the nutritional value of this vegetable crop.  相似文献

In bread wheat, in spite of the upward trend of grain yield, the Italian average production remains far below that of Central or Northern Europe. Recognized constraints are water availability to plants and the increase of air temperature during the grain filling period. To quantify these aspects, three varieties remarkably different in several morphophysiological traits were grown for three years under different water regimes in two locations of North and Central Italy.
The grain yield potential of the two locations was similar although if in the Southern location the plants were taller, with a denser canopy and a greater number of smaller seeds. Irrigation after flowering increased yield and yield stability; however, at high air temperatures, dry matter accumulation ceased even though water in the soil was abundantly available. These results suggest the possibility of applying irrigation during grain filling, but a more realistic approach seems to be selection of new varieties characterized by moderate carliness and capacity to sustain kernel growth for a longer period even in the presence of high air temperatures.  相似文献

A sample of 58 natural ryegrass populations (Lolium perenne L.) from the French and Spanish oceanic coast was evaluated for three seasonal growth traits (i.e. spring, autumn and winter vigour traits) in 5 evaluation sites (three in France and two in Spain). This sample showed a high level of genotype (population) × environment (evaluation sites) interactions for the three agronomic traits. A factor regression analysis, using both isozyme frequencies of populations and climatic factors of evaluation sites as covariates, was carried out on a sub-sample of 30 populations in order to explain these interactions. This method succeeded in explaining most population × location interactions by the product of two covariates. For instance, for spring vigour trait, 72.8% of the interaction term could be explained by the use of two covariates: the PGI2-20 allelic frequency of populations and the minimum temperature of the coldest month of evaluation sites. This study shows the advantage of such a method for plant breeders who need to identify promising ryegrass populations for their breeding objectives. Retrospective analyses may provide an understanding of unexploited genetic potential and indicate possible pathways for future yield improvement. The objectives of this study were to present maize(Zea mays L.)yield trends and plant traits changes for maize cultivars from the 1950s to the 2000s in China. Trials were conducted at three locations in 2007 and 2008, and at four locations in 2009. Twenty-seven single hybrids, four double-cross hybrids, and four open-pollinated varieties, were grown at three densities at each location each year. 56% of total yield gain was contributed to breeding from 1950 to 2000. New hybrids had more resistance to compound stress. Levels of response of all hybrids to higher-yielding environments were similar, and greater than that of OPVs. All maize cultivars showed morphological changes for all characteristics tested in a volatile manner from 1950 to 2000, except for relatively stable leaf number. ASI decreased and tolerance to root lodging improved, which were enhanced at higher plant densities. There were no trends for other characteristics at higher densities. Shorter maturity, smaller plant size and more tolerance to root and stalk lodging will be required for further yield improvement. Chinese maize yield improvement can benefit from agronomic strategies at higher plant densities.  相似文献

This study was carried out in order to determine the effect of seed size on the growth and yield of durum wheat. Four field experiments, composed of six durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) varieties and three seeding sizes were conducted in north‐east Spain in 2000 and 2001 in randomized complete block designs. The growth of seedlings was dramatically affected by seed size. Large seeds produced greater plot stands, but the plants had fewer tillers, leaves and spikes and less green area and dry weight than plots from small seeds. Grain yield was 16 % greater in plots from large seeds, which resulted in greater biomass, green area index, spikes per m2 and heavier kernels than in plots from small seeds. Kernel weight was the yield component most related to grain yield in the three seed sizes. The percentage of yield variation explained by kernel weight increased as the weight of kernels increased. This was a consequence of the use of larger seeds, the same effect being observed when the comparison was made between varieties with different kernel weights. Selection for heavy kernel varieties may help to improve the yield of durum wheat in Mediterranean environments similar to that prevailing in north‐east Spain.  相似文献

Nabicol (B. napus L. var. pabularia) is a traditional crop in the Northwest of Iberian Peninsula (South of Galicia and North of Portugal) where it is grown during the winter season on small farms and gardens using traditional varieties. A collection of 36 populations of nabicol from Galicia (northwestern Spain) was evaluated during 2002 and 2003 in two locations and two growing seasons (spring/summer and autumn/spring) for 28 agronomic and morphological traits. The objectives of this study were to: (i) evaluate a collection of nabicol landraces from northwestern Spain, (ii) determine the suitability of this germplasm as a summer crop and (iii) study the genetic diversity among local populations. Significant differences were observed among populations for most traits. Genotype × environment interaction was significant for most of them. Spring/summer growing season could be recommended for growing nabicol but resistance to Lepidoptera pests attacking Brassica crops should be improved. Most populations had an agronomic value similar to the commercial variety. The most promising variety for horticultural use was MBG-BRS0063, which showed the highest yield. Morphological and agronomic data were subjected to cluster analysis and four groups were defined with a group clustering most populations. The low genetic diversity could be explained because populations were collected in close geographical areas and the selection made by farmers was always for a horticultural use. These results give information about the diversity and breeding value of the nabicol Spanish germplasm, which could be useful in breeding programs.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to investigate the genotype × environment interaction for in vivo digestibility of organic matter and of crude fibre in silage maize evaluated with standard sheep experiments. In order to test the genotype × year interaction, the first experiment consisted of taking data subsets out of a 26-year experiment and evaluating in vivo digestibility traits at Lusignan (France) on numerous maize genotypes. In order to test the genotype × location interaction, the second experiment was a specific one whereby five hybrids were cropped in diverse locations and then evaluated from experiments with sheep, at Lusignan. The variation attributed to genotype × environment (either a year or a location) interaction for in vivo digestibility traits was distinctly lower than the variation due to the main genotypic effect. Therefore, the in vivo digestibility of organic matter and of crude fibre in maize genotypes could be accurately assessed from silages cropped in a simple experimental design, which included replicates, but only a small number of years or locations. This also confirmed the results obtained with in vitro digestibility traits from large multi-environmental designs which highlighted the low importance of genotype × environment interactions and contributed to the validation of in vitro criteria.  相似文献

Málaga is a province of Spain where olive-trees are cultivated in a large range of environments, climates and soils. We have developed a reliable and reproducible method to detect RAPD and AP-PCR polymorphisms, using DNA from olive-tree (Olea europaea L.) leaves. Starting from their natural orchards, fifty-six olive-tree cultivars throughout Málaga province, including oil and table olive cultivars, were screened and grouped into 22 varieties. A total of 62 informative polymorphic loci that provide 601 conspicuous bands were enough to differentiate the varieties. Clustering analyses managing 3 different pairwise distances, as well as phylogenetic analyses, led to the same result: olive-trees in Málaga can be divided into three main groups. Group I (90% of certainty) contains wild type and two introduced varieties, group II (83% of certainty) covers some native olive-trees, and group III (58% of certainty) is an heterogeneous cluster that includes varieties originating and cultivated in a number of Andalusian locations. Geographic location seems to be the first responsible of this classification, and morphological traits are needed to justify the group III subclustering. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of autochthonic origin of most olive-tree cultivars, and have been used to support a Label of Origin for the olive oil produced by the varieties included in group II. To study the genetic structure of open-pollinated faba bean varieties, three sets of genotypes were generated from each of the varieties ‘Minica’, ‘Kristall’, and ‘Deiniol’: (1) inbred lines developed by single-seed descent in bee-proof isolation cages, (2) intravanetal and (3) intervarietal F1-hybrids produced by controlled hand crossing. In 1989 and 1990, a total of 144 entries, including the three open-pollinated source varieties, were grown in single-row plots with two replications at two locations in Western Germany. Performance data of the inbred lines revealed relatively large genotypic variability within each variety, for all the characters studied, which was greater in ‘Deiniol’ and ‘Kristall’ than in ‘Minica’. An average yield heterosis of 20 %, 39 % and 57 %, respectively, was found for the intravarietal hybrids, whereas that of the intervarietal hybrids varied between 70 and 73 %. Compared to the mean yield of the inbred lines the superiority of the open-pollinated source variety was small and not significant in ‘Minica’ (6 %), but it was large and highly significant in ‘Kristall’ (22 %) and ‘Deiniol’ (37 %). The present investigation revealed in faba bean that similar performance levels of open-pollinated varieties may result from either high per se performance under inbreeding with low heterosis values or from lower per se performance but with high heterosis values.  相似文献

Matching phenology with prevalent abiotic and biotic conditions is a prerequisite for varietal adaptation to the environment. That is particularly important in the context of climate change because an increase in temperature is most likely to modify the precocity of the varieties. The forecast of flowering time in photoperiod‐sensitive sorghum is complex as flowering depends on temperature, day length and soil fertility. The objectives of this work were to quantify effects of latitude on the development of selected sorghum varieties and to verify the precision of our models to predict sorghum maturity. A field experiment at three locations along the latitudinal gradient in Mali with staggered sowing dates (SDs) was conducted. Seven sorghum cultivars covering a wide range of the diversity of cultivated sorghums in Mali were sown on the 10 of June, July and August in 2009 and 2010. Duration of the vegetative phase strongly decreased with latitude. Although the maximum day length difference between locations was < 8 min, for some varieties, we observed a reduction in crop duration of up to 3 weeks. Some varieties were photoperiod insensitive at one location but became photoperiod sensitive at another. The effect of latitude on the phenology is underestimated by the existing models. To determine the optimal areas for the varieties in West Africa and to forecast the effects of climate change, a correction of the simulation coefficients taking account of latitude is proposed. But, in the end, it will be necessary to develop a new model that will be able to predict the effects of both SD and latitude. More research is needed to understand physiological response mechanisms of the pronounced latitude effects on sorghum phenology.  相似文献

The dry matter accumulation and photosynthetic traits of upper leaves were studied twice weekly in 1983, under field conditions, for two early maturing maize cultivars. Analysis of correlation between climatic data and those traits were based on four week periods. Seasonal patterns of correlation coefficients were drawn by shifting the beginning of these four week periods from one sampling data to the next until four weeks before the end of the sampling period. Most traits were significantly correlated with climatic factors at one time or another; only those correlations which were of longer duration will be mentioned here. Net assimilation rate was positively correlated with maximum temperature during intensive leaf growth. The relative growth rate was closely correlated with photosynthetic photon irradiance (PPI) during the second half of June and with phosphofructokinase activity during the second part of July. The chlorophyll content showed a close and positive relationship with minimum temperature until the end of June and with PPI during most of August. The content of carotenoids was, for the most part, negatively correlated with climatic factors, the closest relationship existing with the PPI at the previous sampling date until the beginning of July. The activity of photosynthetic enzymes such as RuBP carboxylase, NADP malate dehydrogenase and PEP carboxylase was generally less closely correlated with climatic factors over longer periods. Patterns of correlation were remarkably similar for the two cultivars.  相似文献

Seed fatty acid (FA) composition, oil and protein (meal) was assessed on five canola ( Brassica napus ) varieties in 14 cropping environments in southern Australia, including several low rainfall drought-stressed environments. We modelled the relationship between seed quality attributes and growing season rainfall and temperature using a linear mixed model. Variance components for variety and years within locations were relatively large, but variance components for variety × environment interaction were small or insignificant for most seed quality traits. Mean oleic acid content varied from 57% in 'Surpass 300TT' to 62% in 'ATR-Beacon'. As growing season rainfall decreased from 300 mm (moderate) to 150 mm (severe drought stress), mean oleic acid decreased by 3.8%, linoleic acid increased by 2.0%, linolenic acid increased by 1.7%, and saturated FA decreased by 0.4%. Seed oil (% dry weight) decreased by 3.2% and protein in meal (% dry weight) increased by 3.9% across the same rainfall range. High oleic acid composition was associated with higher rainfall and cooler average minimum and maximum temperatures during the growing season.  相似文献

Breeding for resistant genotypes is the best strategy to offset the destructive effects of cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and cassava bacterial blight (CBB). Two sets of diallel parents were selected for the forest and the savannah ecological zones in Ghana based on good levels of resistance to CMD and CBB. Both sets were crossed in a half-diallel design. The first set of seven progenitors and their 21 F1 progenies were planted in a randomised complete block design (RCBD) with three replications in two different locations for two seasons in the forest ecology. The second set of five progenitors and their 10 F1 progenies were planted in a RCBD with three replications in two locations in the coastal savannah ecological zone of Ghana. Both experiments were evaluated for CMD and CBB resistance, fresh root yield, dry root yield, root number, harvest index, dry matter content, plant height at maturity and height at first branching, levels of branching and plant vigour. Results of the combined analysis of variance revealed that the environment effect was significant for all the traits. General combining ability and specific combining ability effects were significant for most of the traits. Narrow sense heritability was significant for plant vigour, root number, CMD and CBB in both the zones. CMD and root number also had a predictability ratio of close to one, indicating the importance of additive gene effects.  相似文献
