The position, size and connections of all the macroscopically visible foramina of Cervical vertebrae 3–7 in 20 oxen are described. The nomen-clature of various structures is discussed. A definite pattern evolves, indicating vascular pathways, regions where bloodvessels can be expected to enter or leave, the size of vessels involved and age differences. In regard to the latter there seems to be two opposing patterns: on the external surface foramina seem to increase in size and distribution with increasing age; on the internal surface (including that of the “transverse canal”) the opposite pattern prevails.  相似文献

Computed tomography (CT) scans can be acquired with the transverse images aligned either parallel to the endplates or perpendicular to the vertebral canal. The purpose of this prospective cross‐sectional study was to determine the effect of angle acquisition on CT morphometric evaluation of the cervical vertebral column of Great Danes with and without cervical spondylomyelopathy. Twenty‐eight Great Danes (13 normal, 15 affected) were sampled. For each dog, a set of CT images was acquired with the transverse slices aligned parallel to the endplates and another one with the transverse images aligned perpendicular to the vertebral canal. For each different set, transverse slices from the cranial, middle, and caudal aspects of the individual vertebral bodies C2‐C7 were measured. Height, width, transverse area, right dorsal to left ventral height (RDLV), and left dorsal to right ventral height (LDRV) were recorded by a single observer at each location. For both affected and control dogs, significant differences between the measurements obtained from the two sets of transverse images were found only at the cranial aspect of the vertebrae (P = 0.005, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, P = 0.005, and P = 0.010 for height, width, area, RDLV, and LDRV, respectively). Measurements for the middle and caudal aspects did not differ. The funnel‐shape morphology of the cervical vertebral foramina in Great Danes with stenosis of their cranial aspect may be responsible for the significant differences found. Considering that the morphometric parameters were significantly affected by CT slice angle in the current study, authors recommend that a standardized scanning protocol be followed when morphometric evaluations using CT are planned.  相似文献

The external anatomical differences between the skulls and mandibles of 10 mountain zebras Equus zebra and 10 plains zebras E. burchelli of both sexes were studied. The nomenclature used conforms to Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (1983). Eleven structural differences are described for the first time and illustrated, viz., outline of the foramen magnum; length of the alar canal; comparative presence of the For. alare parvum; proportions of the mastoid process of the temporal bone; shape and development of the pterygoid crest; notch at the rostral end of the facial crest in E. burchelli; different inclination of the caudal end of the zygomatic arch; shape and length of the retroarticular process; relative size of the supraorbital foramina; presence of incisive canals in E. zebra; difference in the junction of the interalveolar border of the mandible with the alveolar border of the first cheek tooth. If three or more differences are used for identification, it should be possible to train any worker to distinguish between the skulls of these two species.  相似文献

Absence of the transverse ligament of the atlas was diagnosed at necropsy in an 8-month-old Shih Tzu with radiographic signs of atlantoaxial subluxation. Symmetric ataxia, tetraparesis, and signs of pain in the vertebral canal suggested a lesion in the cervical portion of the spinal cord. Necropsy revealed absence of the transverse ligament of the atlas and malformation of dens and atlas. In addition, the alar ligaments were distinct and thick, and the atlanto-occipital and atlantoaxial joint capsules were markedly thicker than normal. Histologic examination revealed focal compressive myelopathy of the spinal cord at the level of the atlantoaxial joint.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To apply a novel technique and use the number and size (diameter and mean area) of vascular foramina to estimate potential blood supply in the metacarpophalangeal bones of dogs. ANIMALS: 28 Greyhounds. PROCEDURES: The forelimb sesamoid bones of 23 dogs were obtained after dogs were euthanized. Bones were isolated and examined by scanning electron microscopy. The number, diameter, and area of vascular foramina were determined by image analysis. Arterial distribution was assessed by use of resin injection in the sesamoid bones of 5 additional dogs. RESULTS: Sesamoids 2 and 7 had significantly fewer foramina (mean +/- SE, 38.9+/-2.5) and lower total foramen area (0.55+/-0.04 mm(2)), compared with values for other sesamoids (70.4+/-3.3 foramina and 1.43+/-0.06 mm(2), respectively). Mean area and diameter of foramina of sesamoids 2 and 7 were also smaller in some regions. Comparison of the foramen distribution in dogs with sesamoid disease and clinically normal dogs revealed that for sesamoids 2 and 7, intact sesamoids from dogs with sesamoid disease had a significantly lower total foramen area (20 sesamoids from 9 dogs, 0.45+/-0.04 mm(2)), compared with sesamoids in clinically normal dogs (59 sesamoids from 14 dogs, 0.58+/-0.03 mm(2)). However, for sesamoids other than 2 and 7, dogs with sesamoid disease had a significantly greater foramen area. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The restriction of vascular foramina in sesamoids 2 and 7 appeared to mirror the disease distribution and disease risk for specific dogs.  相似文献

To investigate variations in atlas shape in dogs the image archives of the Department for Small Animals and Horses, University of Vienna, and The Royal Veterinary College, University of London were searched for radiographs and CT images of the canine atlas. 32 radiographic and 78 CT studies, including 51 toy and 54 large breed dogs, were retrieved and analysed. Five dogs had both radiographs and CT scans. Patients with pathologic alterations, such as fractures and incomplete ossification of the atlas, as well as oblique projections were excluded. Compared to large breed dogs (body weight more than 30 kg) the atlas of toy breed dogs (body weight less than 10 kg) had a reduced craniocaudal and an increased dorsoventral diameter. The vertebral longitudinal axis appeared to be dorsorotated, resulting in a steeper rise of the atlas wings and a more dorsally located lateral vertebral foramen. When comparing the atlas of toy and large breed dogs, the distribution of three morphologic parameters was statistically different: Ratio length to height (toy breeds > 1, large breeds < or = 1), shape of the vertebral chanal (toy breeds: vertically oval, large breeds: round resp. cross-oval, or vertically oval) and trabecular bone of the dorsal arch (toy breeds: absent, large breeds: present). There was no significant difference in the morphology of the ventral arch. Differences in atlas morphology could contribute to the predisposition of toy breed dogs to atlanto-axial instability; however, further studies are necessary to test this hypothesis.  相似文献

SUMMARY Three years after the start of an experiment to assess the merits of thiabendazole (TBZ) treatment of trichostrongylid parasites in weaner sheep, field isolates of Ostertagia spp and Trichostrongylus spp were made from weaner sheep treated under one of three treatment schemes. Treatment frequencies were “nil”, “planned” (5 or 6/year) and “regular” (every 3 weeks). In addition an isolate was taken from a group of “tracer” sheep drenched with TBZ every 10 days. Resistance to TBZ was assessed using an in vitro egg hatch assay, pre- and post-treatment faecal egg counts and a controlled anthelmintic efficiency test. Pre- and post-treatment egg counts revealed the presence of TBZ-resistance in field isolates of mixed species. Egg hatch assays indicated a level of resistance for Ostertagia spp which was proportional to the frequency of TBZ treatment. The “planned”, “regular” and “tracer” strains of Ostertagia spp had resistance ratios for eggs of 4, 13 and 15 respectively when compared to the “nil” strain. In the anthelmintic efficiency assay treatment with 44 mg kg-1 and 88 mg kg-1 of TBZ removed 82 and 96% respectively of the total Ostertagia burden (adults and larvae) from the “nil” strain and 30 and 75% respectively from the “planned” strain. The same dose rates against the “regular” and “tracer” strains and additional rates of 132 or 176 mg kg-1 against the “tracer” strain failed to reduce the Ostertagia burden significantly. Intestinal Trichostrongylus spp from all isolates were fully susceptible to TBZ at 44 mg kg-1. Levamisole at 7.0 mg kg-1 was highly effective (99% reduction) against the “tracer” strain of Ostertagia.  相似文献

Tamandua mexicana is a mammal of the superorder Xenarthra geographically located between Mexico and Peru that remains insufficiently studied. These species are characterized by their movement, resting, and eating of termites and ants in arboreal and terrestrial environments, and therefore, their thoracic limbs have been adapted morphologically to move in these environments. Tamandua mexicana is a species constantly threatened by different causes, and their thoracic limbs can be affected in the scapular and shoulder regions as a result; therefore, specific anatomical knowledge of the scapula allows for better clinical procedures, surgical approaches, radiological diagnosis and muscular reconstructions in extinct species of anteaters. The main objective of this study was to report the anatomical and radiographic features of the scapula in juvenile and adult specimens of T. mexicana. Gross dissections and radiographic study were performed in six cadavers. The scapula had large differences compared with other mammals, such as two spines, a foramen for the suprascapular nerve, a long acromion, a cranial transverse scapular ligament and caudolateral fossa for the origin of the muscles teres major, tensor fasciae antebrachii and subscapular. In juvenile specimens, a scapular cartilage, an acromial cartilage, craniomedial and caudolateral coracoscapular ligaments forming the foramen for the suprascapular nerve, and progressive ossification of those ligaments and the cranial transverse scapular ligament were observed. These findings were corroborated by radiography; therefore, these characteristics change with age. The bony reliefs of the scapula of T. mexicana corroborate the specialization of the shoulder in this species.  相似文献

Computed tomography images of 120 dogs were reviewed to characterize variations in atlas morphology, and to identify breed‐specific morphologic features. The neural arch of the atlas was thicker in large dogs and male dogs than in small dogs, having a layer of trabecular bone between the inner and outer layers of compact bone. The transverse processes of the atlas were relatively longer in large dogs than in small dogs. Twelve (10%) dogs had incomplete ossification of the atlas. Incomplete ossification of the atlas was associated with gun dogs. Eight dogs had atlantoaxial subluxation. All eight dogs with atlantoaxial subluxation had cervical signs, whereas none of the seven dogs with incomplete ossification of the atlas unaccompanied by atlantoaxial subluxation had clinical signs referable to that area. Of five dogs with both atlantoaxial subluxation and incomplete ossification of the atlas, four had osseous defects affecting both the intercentrum and neural arch, and one had only an osseous defect affecting the neural arch. There was a strong association between incomplete ossification of the atlas and atlantoaxial subluxation (odds ratio 35.0, 95% CI 7.0–175, P=0.00002), which supports the hypothesis that incomplete ossification of the atlas predisposes dogs to atlantoaxial subluxation.  相似文献

An unusual occipitoatlantoaxial malformation is described in a 2-week-old male part Arabian foal that was unable to stand at birth and showed signs of spastic tetraparesis due to a cervical spinal cord compression. There were 2 atlases present. One was fused to the occipital bones. The other articulated with the first atlas and an axis which had a long dens that projected into the vertebral canal. Examination of the ossification centers of the axis indicated partial duplication of that bone.  相似文献

This retrospective study describes the clinical and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features of chronic orbital inflammation with intracranial extension in four dogs (two Dachshunds, one Labrador, one Swiss Mountain). Intracranial extension was observed through the optic canal (n=1), the orbital fissure (n=4), and the alar canal (n=1). On T1-weighted images structures within the affected skull foramina could not be clearly differentiated, but were all collectively isointense to hypointense compared with the contralateral, unaffected side, or compared with gray matter. On T2-, short tau inversion recovery (STIR)-, or fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR)-weighted images structures within the affected skull foramina appeared hyperintense compared with gray matter, and extended with increased signal into the rostral cranial fossa (n=1) and middle cranial fossa (n=4). Contrast enhancement at the level of the affected skul foramina as well as at the skull base in continuity with the orbital fissure was observed in all patients. Brain edema or definite meningeal enhancement could not be observed, but a close anatomic relationship of the abnormal tissue to the cavernous sinus was seen in two patients. Diagnosis was confirmed in three dogs (one cytology, two biopsy, one necropsy) and was presumptive in one based on clinical improvement after treatment. This study is limited by its small sample size, but provides evidence for a potential risk of intracranial extension of chronic orbital inflammation. This condition can be identified best by abnormal signal increase at the orbital fissure on transverse T2-weighted images, on dorsal STIR images, or on postcontrast transverse or dorsal images.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used to diagnose degenerative lumbosacral stenosis; however, studies show limited correlation between imaging and clinical signs. The purpose of this prospective observer agreement study was to use dynamic MRI of the lumbosacral (LS) spine of healthy dogs to determine reliable reference ranges. Twenty‐two healthy large breed dogs were prospectively enrolled. MRI of the LS spine was performed in T2‐weighted, T1‐weighted, and T2‐weighted SPACE sequences in neutral, flexed, and extended positions. Four observers performed image analyses. Measurements included LS angle, vertebral canal height and area, and LS foraminal areas. Ordinal categorical assessment of loss of fat signal in the foramina, LS compression, intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration, spondylosis, and IVD protrusion was also performed. The majority of values were significantly larger in flexion versus neutral position, and significantly smaller in extension versus neutral position (P < .05). Subclinical compression and IVD protrusion was noted in a neutral position in 45% and 55% of dogs and in an extended position in 85% and 73% of dogs, respectively. Interobserver agreement was strong (intracluster correlation coefficient [ICC] > .5) except for the L7:LS vertebral canal area ratio (ICC ≤ .03). Intraobserver agreement was high (rho > .5) for all measurements except for the mid‐L6:LS vertebral canal height ratio (rho = .38). There was poor interobserver agreement for loss of fat signal in the foramina and evidence of compression. This study provides the groundwork for future studies using dynamic MRI to evaluate dogs with signs of clinical LS disease.  相似文献

The study investigated, for cycling sheep, synchronizing protocols simultaneously to the standard “P” protocol using progestogens priming with intravaginal devices and gonadotropin. In November 2014, 90 adult Menz ewes were assigned to either the “P” protocol, “PGF” treatment where oestrus and ovulation were synchronized using two injections of prostaglandin 11 days apart or a “GnRH” treatment where the ewes had their oestrus and ovulation synchronized with GnRH (day 0)–prostaglandin (day 6)–GnRH (day 9) sequence. The ewes were naturally mated at the induced oestrus and the following 36 days. Plasma progesterone revealed that 92% of the ewes were ovulating before synchronization and all, except one, ovulated in response to the applied treatments. All “P” ewes exhibited oestrus during the 96‐hr period after the end of the treatments in comparison with only 79.3% and 73.3% for “PGF” and “GnRH” ewes, respectively (< .05). Onset and duration of oestrus were affected by the hormonal treatment (< .05); “GnRH” ewes showed oestrus earliest and had the shortest oestrous duration. Lambing rate from mating at the induced oestrus was lower for “P” than for “PGF” ewes (55.6% and 79.3%, respectively; < .05). The same trait was also lower for “P” than for “PGF” and “GnRH” ewes (70.4%, 89.7% and 86.7%, respectively; < .05) following the 36‐day mating period. Prostaglandin and GnRH analogue‐based protocols are promising alternatives for both controlled natural mating and fixed insemination of Menz sheep after the rainy season when most animals are spontaneously cycling.  相似文献

To further promote the early development of porcine embryos and capture “naïve” pluripotent state within blastocyst, the experiment explored the effects of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) on the early development of porcine parthenogenetic embryos and the expression of pluripotency relevant genes. The results showed that the addition of 50 μM LPA significantly improved parthenogenetic embryo cleavage rate (82.7% vs. 74.7%, < 0.05), blastocyst rate (24.5% vs. 11.3%, < 0.05) and blastocyst cell count (56 ± 7.9 vs. 42 ± 1.0, < 0.05) than that of the control group. In addition, immunostaining experiment determined that the fluorescence intensity of OCT4 was also significantly higher than that of the control group. The quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (qRT–PCR) test revealed that addition of 50 μM LPA could significantly enhance the expression level of pluripotent gene OCT4 and trophoblast marker genes CDX2, however, decrease the expression of primitive hypoblast marker gene GATA4. The results also indicated that LPA might decrease the expression of GATA4 through the ROCK signalling pathway. For further investigating the effect of the addition of LPA on the expression of “primed” and “naïve” genes, we also detected the expression of those pluripotency‐related genes by qRT–PCR. The results showed addition of LPA had no significant effect on the expression of “naïve” pluripotent genes, but it was able to significantly decrease the expression of “primed” pluripotent genes, NODAL and Activin‐A; furthermore, it also could significantly improve the expression of OCT4 and c‐Myc which act as two important ES cell renewal factors. Above all, the addition of LPA can facilitate the early development of porcine parthenogenetic embryos, which may be able to benefit for capturing “naïve” pluripotency in vitro through inhibiting “primed” pluripotency.  相似文献

Foot muscle antigens of the diploid Bulinus natalensis from Lake Sibayi showed complete immunological correspondence with antiserum prepared from foot muscle tissues of the diploid B. tropicus. On the other hand, strong “non-identity” reactions occurred when B. natalensis antigens were tested with the antiserum prepared from foot muscle of the tetraploid B. coulboisi. It is therefore concluded that B. natalensis is indeed a member of the “tropicusspecies group”, as its chromosome number would imply, and not a diploid member of the more northern polyploid “truncatus species group”, as several morphological characters might suggest.  相似文献

Human–coyote interactions have occurred since the arrival of the species to the island of Newfoundland in 1985. A mail survey (= 786) of Newfoundland residents was conducted in 2008. The survey explored negative feelings toward coyotes. A four stage hierarchical multiple regression model examined how the dependent variable, “feelings,” was influenced by four independent blocks of variables: “existence beliefs,” “impact beliefs,” “fear,” and “experience and demographic characteristics.” Together the predictors explained 50% of the variability, with existence beliefs accounting for most of the variation (ΔR2 = . 45), followed by impact beliefs (ΔR2 = .024) and fear (ΔR2 = .018). The experience-demographic block of variables accounted for minimal influence (ΔR2 = .003) and was not statistically significant. The remaining variability might be explained by emotions. When exploring human–wildlife interactions it is important to understand the role of affect in the formation of attitudes as feelings influence the tolerance and ultimately the willingness to coexist with wildlife.  相似文献

Bilateral metacarpophalangeal radiographs of 100 Thoroughbreds were examined for visualization and location of the major nutrient foramen of the proximal phalanx. The foramina were located on the dorsal or palmar aspects of the cortex or were not visible radiographically. Of the 100 horses, 60 had the same pattern in both forefeet. In the remaining 40 horses, the left and right proximal phalangeal foramina were asymmetric. Of the 200 proximal phalangeal foramina (100 horses), 53 were on the dorsal aspect of the cortex and 101 were on the palmar aspect of the cortex; 46 were not visible radiographically. Significant effect of age or gender could not be determined.  相似文献
