1. Dried poultry manure (DPM) collected from 1‐d to 3‐week‐old chicks, reared in electrical battery brooders, incorporated at a level of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% in a chick starter diet, was recycled four times.

2. There was a linear decrease in body weight and efficiency of food utilisation with each percentage increase in DPM.

3. The amount of dried droppings recovered as a percentage of food consumed was proportional to the amount of DPM included in the diet and remained fairly constant during the recycling.

4. Body weights and efficiency of food utilisation were substantially the same during the first three recycling periods but declined significantly during the fourth period.

5. Mortality was negligible and all chicks appeared healthy and vigorous.

6. Chicks fed on 10% DPM in an isocaloric and isonitrogenous (protein‐N) diet grew and utilised food as well as those fed on the basal diet; chicks fed on 20% DPM did not consume enough to meet their requirements.  相似文献

1. About 3000 medium‐weight hybrid chicks were used in a factorial experiment involving two “chick” treatments: diets containing 0 and 50 g dried poultry manure (DPM)/kg; three “grower” treatments, diets with and without 50 g DPM/kg given ad libitum and regulated amounts of the diet with DPM; five “layer” treatments: diets with 0, 100 or 200 g DPM/kg given ad libitum and regulated amounts of diets containing 110 and 220 g DPM/kg and two shapes of layer cages: deep (conventional) and shallow.

2. Chick diets had no significant effects on rearing or subsequent laying performance.

3. Food‐regulated pullets were 7% lighter than pullets given the DPM diet ad libitum at 18 weeks but consumed 12.5% less food; growing treatments had no significant effect on subsequent egg production.

4. Hens housed in shallow cages laid 10.3 eggs/bird‐housed more than those in deep cages, produced 3.8% greater egg mass, consumed 2.7% less food and produced fewer damaged (cracked, broken and hair‐cracked) eggs (P< 0.001).

5. DPM‐containing layer diets had no adverse effects on egg production, or mortality; with 100 g DPM/kg efficiency of food conversion (EFC) was better than with 0 or 200 g/kg (P< 0.001).

6. Reduction of the energy intake of L110R and L220R hens with diets containing 110 and 220 g DPM/kg by 8.2 and 9.0% respectively, reduced the number of eggs laid/hen‐housed by 6 and 10.7 but improved the EFG (P< 0.001); there was no significant interaction between cage shape and energy regulation.  相似文献

1. Dried poultry manure (DPM) has been tested as a replacement for groundnut cake in poultry diets.

2. Body weight gain, and the efficiency of food conversion were improved when the diet contained 50 g DPM/kg but higher rates of inclusion (100 or 150 g/kg) depressed growth.

3. Birds fed on diets containing 50 g DPM/kg yielded meat of comparable quality to those fed on the control diet whereas those fed on diets containing more DPM yielded meat containing more fat and less water.

4. The percentage moisture in the meat was inversely related to the lipid content.

5. Nitrogen retention was comparable in all groups.  相似文献

1. Three methods of restricting the growth rate of pullets from 8 to 20 weeks of age were compared. They were: quantitative food restriction, a diet low in lysine and arginine and a low protein diet.

2. Food consumption up to 20 weeks of age was significantly reduced by all three treatments; mortality was increased and sexual maturity was delayed.

3. Greatest uniformity was observed amongst pullets fed on the low protein and the low lysine diets

4. By 70 weeks there were no significant differences in food conversion based on food consumed between 20 and 70 weeks of age, but based on consumption between 8 and 70 weeks the quantitatively restricted birds converted food most efficiently.

5. The most favourable method of restriction appeared to be the feeding of a low lysine or low protein diet, since rearing costs were low, and the performance of the pullets on these treatments was high.  相似文献

1. Three degrees of quantitative food restriction producing body weights 88, 76 or 64% of controls at 20 weeks and three times of starting restriction 3, 6 or 9 weeks of age were compared with ad libitum‐fed pullets in a factorial experiment with 1800 light‐hybrid hens. Restrictions were applied such that the target weights were produced irrespective of time of starting.

2. Food intake was least when restrictions were started at 3 weeks.

3. Sexual maturity was delayed in proportion to the severity of restriction and resulted in lower percentages of small eggs.

4. Egg numbers decreased as restriction increased.

5. Mortality in restricted groups during rearing and laying was higher.

6. Optimal restriction was apparently intermediate between treatments producing 88 or 76% of ad libitum‐fed body weight. Body weight was so excessively affected by the most severe restriction that total production was adversely affected.

7. Restriction from 3 weeks was more profitable than restriction from 6 or 9 weeks, resulting in lower food cost during rearing and higher total egg production.  相似文献

1. The amino acid requirements of laying type pullets during the growing period can be estimated by measuring the growth of different components of the body and making use of nutritional constants that define the amount of each amino acid that is required for the production of the tissues being formed.

2. In this experiment, carcase analyses of each of three breeds of pullets were conducted at weekly intervals throughout the growth of the pullets, to 18 weeks of age. Measurements were made of body weight, gut‐fill and feather weight, and chemical analyses consisted of water, protein, lipid and ash measurements of both the body and the feathers. Each age group comprised 10 birds of each breed.

3. Gompertz functions accurately estimated the growth of both body protein and feather protein, to 18 weeks of age, from which the rate of growth of these two components of the body could be estimated. The mature weight of pullets was overestimated by the Gompertz growth curve, which may indicate that a pullet ceases to increase in body protein content once sexual maturity has been reached.

4. Using allometric relationships between the chemical components of the body and of feathers, all the components of growth could be estimated from the growth of body protein and feather protein. These components were then added together to determine the growth rate of the body as a whole.

5. The daily amino acid requirements for 4 functions were calculated, namely, those for the maintenance of body protein and feather protein, and for the gain in body protein and feather protein. These requirements were then summed to determine the requirement of pullets on each day of the growing period.

6. Using the ‘effective energy’ system, the amount of energy required by these pullets was calculated for each day of the growing period, from which the desired daily food intake of the pullets could be predicted. By dividing the amino acid requirement by this daily food intake it was possible to determine the concentration of amino acids that would be needed in the diet in order to meet the requirements of a pullet.

7. The results indicate that the ratio between the requirement for lysine and for methionine and cysteine changes dramatically during the growing period, negating the concept of a fixed ratio between all the amino acids during growth.

8. The above process is the first step in determining the optimal feeding programme for a population of pullets of a given genotype. The constraining effects, of the diet being offered and of the environment in which the pullets are housed, on the food intake and growth rate of each pullet have to be estimated, and such a theory can then be expanded to include all the individuals in the population. Only by the use: of simulation models can all these constraining effects be considered simultaneously.  相似文献

1. Chicks of a light‐bodied strain were deprived of food on alternate days from 15 to 46 d of age.

2. Hyperphagia, amounting to twice the intake of control birds early in the experiment, occurred on the repletion day.

3. Final body weight attained 80% of that of the controls.

4. Body fat concentration decreased at first but returned to that of controls after 3 weeks.

5. A consistent hyperlipaemia was observed after food deprivation or restoration.

6. There was a marked increase in the digestive enzymes found in the small intestine, but not in the pancreas during the repletion day.

7. These responses may be considered as mechanisms to reduce the physiological manifestations of starvation.  相似文献

1. Specific legal requirements for keeping pullets are not available in the European Union. However, two of the most important rearing factors for pullets are sufficient perching and feeder space. Both factors represent horizontal space dimensions which derive from the body width of the birds.

2. The body width of two strains of layer pullets (brown (BL) and white (WL) layer pullets) based on the measurement of distances in digital images was conducted on front-view digital photographs of BL and WL pullets taken at 8, 12 and 19 weeks of life.

3. Depending on live weight, age and body position, BL pullets measured an average body width between 10.70 ± 1.10 and 13.96 ± 1.11 cm. The width of WL pullets ranged from 10.30 ± 0.86 to 13.00 ± 1.14 cm.

4. Compared with WL, BL pullets occupied more horizontal space during rearing. Age influenced the body width of BL and WL pullets at the end of rearing. The tested body positions of the pullets did not affect the measured body width.

5. The biometric data obtained in this study are a useful basis for developing legal requirements for pullets, especially for defining minimum perch width and feeder space allowances.  相似文献

1. The laying responses of pullets fed from 8 weeks of age on a 12.5% protein grower diet and subsequently subjected to food restriction commencing at various times between 20 and 40 weeks of age were compared with those of pullets reared on diets containing 12.5 or 16% protein and given access to food throughout lay.

2. Restricted feeding during lay of pullets reared on the low‐protein diet substantially improved laying performance, the best results being obtained from pullets fed the low‐protein grower diet and restricted from 20 weeks. The laying responses of pullets restricted after peak‐lay at 40 weeks of age were not significantly different from those of birds restricted prior to peak‐lay.

3. Maximal egg production of 81 % over the 48weeks of the experiment was attained on an average daily ME intake of 270 kcal (1130 kJ) and a FCR of 2.06 : 1.

4. It is suggested that food restriction of laying pullets previously reared on low‐protein diets may be successfully utilised prior to peak‐lay provided such restriction is not so severe as to retard the rate of attainment of mature weight and a continued slight gain in weight thereafter.  相似文献

Small eggs constitute a high proportion of the eggs laid by pullets. The literature shows that chick hatching weight is strongly correlated with egg weight, but evidence on the influence of egg weight on hatchability and subsequent performance of chicks is less certain.

The aim of this experiment was to determine the profit returned at 12 weeks by broiler chickens hatched from eggs ranging in weight from 44 g. to 58 g. at one gram intervals and to determine how competitive and separate rearing might modify the relationship.

A total of 6000 eggs were collected during 10 days from a 28‐week‐old, broiler breeding flock and graded into the above mentioned egg weight classes. From these, a total of 3480 day‐old broilers were housed. Each egg weight class was equally represented and balanced for sex.

Hatchability and fertility showed no consistent trend with egg weight for eggs above 46 g., but below the 47 g. level there was a trend of declining fertility and hatchability.

A strong positive relationship was found between the weight of the chick at 1 day of age and egg weight for both males and females with no significant difference overall in body weight between the two sexes.

Body weight to 12 weeks was found to be strongly related to egg weight, in a linear fashion, though this influence declined with age.

There was a greater influence of egg weight on body weight at all ages in the separate rearing treatment compared with competitive rearing but this was not significant after 10 weeks.

Egg weight had an important bearing on body weight and profit at 12 weeks, but no effect on food conversion or mortality.

The increased profit over food costs per 100 day‐old chicks was found to be 52.75 cents for the separately reared birds respectively for each 3 g. increase in egg weight.  相似文献

1. Heritability estimates were higher for 8‐week body weight in dwarf than in normal broiler populations due to the maternal effects of dwarf dams.

2. The dwarfing gene dw did not induce new genetic variability for egg weight, 30‐week body weight and age at sexual maturation.

3. Genetic correlation estimates showed that the selection for 8‐week body weight will increase egg weight in dwarf pullets more than in normals.

4. Within a dwarf population it should be possible to increase 8‐week body weight without influencing the mature size of pullets.  相似文献

1. The influences of genotype, age and sex on droppings digestibility coefficients of a compound food were studied using male and female broiler chickens of three different genotypes at 2, 4 and 6 weeks of age.

2. Because the traditional method of determination of droppings digestibility coefficients of nitrogen may lead to systematic errors in estimating the feeding value of foodstuffs, a method is proposed to determine the ileal digestibility coefficients. The ileal method is compared with the droppings method for a mixed food and for two foodstuffs: wheat and solvent‐extracted soyabean meal.

3. Birds selected for efficient food conversion showed distinctly higher digestibility coefficients for all nutrients than birds selected for high growth potential or birds from a commercial strain.

4. The influence of age on digestibility coefficients was not consistent.

5. Female birds showed digestibility coefficients which were, in general, 3% higher than those of male chickens.

6. Interactions between genotype and sex and between genotype and age for energy metabolisability were the only interactions observed for digestibility measurements.

7. The method of determination influenced the amino acid digestibility coefficients of the mixed food and the relative feeding values of wheat and soyabean meal.

8. It is important to use well defined animals (genotype, sex, age) in evaluating foodstuffs.

9. The preferred method for determination of digestibility coefficients of nitrogen and amino acids is based on ileal sampling, although the differences in amino acid digestibility coefficients were small between methods.  相似文献

1. The housing system, age of pullets and their interaction had a significant effect on plasma 5'‐nucleotidase and alkaline phosphatase activities.

2. Activities were higher in birds in cages than in those on the floor, reflecting perhaps the stress of caging. Activities increased with age.

3. Activities were higher in pullets selected for higher production.

4. The type of housing had no effect on egg production, but age at first egg, egg weight and 40‐week body weight were found to be affected significantly.  相似文献

1. A low‐calcium diet (0.5 g calcium/kg) was used to prevent the onset of laying in young pullets.

2. It was fed at 16 weeks of age to five separate groups (groups 2 to 6) each of 50 to 60 birds.

3. Group 2 was fed on a normal layers’ diet at 23 weeks of age, group 3 at 27 weeks, group 4 at 31 weeks, group 5 at 35 weeks and group 6 at 55 weeks while the control group (group 1) of similar size to groups 2 to 6 was subjected to a normal commercial treatment for laying stock.

4. In all the experimental groups the onset of sexual maturity occurred normally, but only one or two eggs were laid before laying ceased under the influence of the treatment.

5. Laying re‐started when the hens were fed on a normal diet and production rapidly rose to a high level.

6. Groups 1, 2 and 3 differed little in the total number of eggs produced up to 72 weeks of age.

7. In all experimental groups there were fewer very small, small and medium eggs than in the control group.

8. It is suggested that the use of a low‐calcium diet before the onset of lay may have advantages which could be exploited on a commercial scale.  相似文献

1. The influence of photoperiod and time of year on the growth of hen turkeys was investigated.

2. Photoperiod treatments consisted of computer simulations of day lengths which occur naturally in the spring and autumn of the year. Both photoperiod treatments were given to hens in the autumn and spring.

3. Data were collected for growth evaluations at 2‐ to 4‐week intervals to 16 weeks of age. No significant season × photoperiod interactions occurred.

4. The spring trial resulted in greater body weights and better food conversions (food/gain) than the autumn trial.

5. Simulated autumn daylengths resulted in greater body weights and improved food efficiency at 16 weeks of age compared with simulated spring daylengths.

6. The pattern of growth (period changes) was influenced by season, but not photoperiod.

7. Season and photoperiod both have important and independent influences on the growth of the turkey hen.  相似文献

1. Automatic equipment for estimating mean body weight was tested on layer replacement pullets on litter and in a cage.

2. The automatic method gave as good a record as manual weighing for the purpose of controlling food intake.

3. The results suggest that care has to be taken regarding the time period over which the weighing equipment is used.

4. It is important that as many records as possible are obtained during a period of the day when body weight is not varying substantially.  相似文献

1. The incidence of defective eggs during the first 60 weeks of age increased with time due to significant increases in broken and membranous eggs in a population of dwarf White Leghorn hens.

2. The production of double‐yolked eggs/100 hen d, high during the initial weeks of lay, rapidly declined and disappeared by 30 weeks of age.

3. The frequencies of broken, membranous and soft‐shelled eggs were significantly correlated with each other and with the frequency of multiple daily ovulations indicating a common aetiology for these defective egg types.

4. Double‐yolked eggs were produced by the heavier, earlier‐maturing pullets in the population.

5. Normal egg production in dwarf White Leghorns may be enhanced by reducing the incidence of defective eggs.  相似文献

1. The significance of fat accumulation during physiological development of layers was studied using White Leghorn x Australorp pullets from 12 weeks of age.

2. Liver fat, carcass fat, liver weight and body weight increased markedly at the onset of sexual maturity.

3. Within the liver, the protein to DNA ratio did not alter significantly during development; glycogen was not consistently depleted by egg production.

4. Liver fat content was significantly correlated with carcass fat, liver weight and DNA concentration, and plasma total lipid and cholesterol, independent of stage of development; with body weight, liver protein, moisture, and protein to DNA ratio, excluding the period prior to commencement of sexual maturation; and with plasma phospholipid during lay.

5. Obesity was a feature of faster growing fowls which matured earlier, consumed more, utilised food less efficiently for egg production and produced fewer saleable eggs.  相似文献

1. Differences were found among eight populations of White Plymouth Rock pullets in the frequency of broken eggs.

2. The shells of such eggs were thinner than those of intact eggs in seven of the populations.

3. The number of defective eggs, the specific gravity of the eggs, and the percentage hen‐day egg production of normal eggs were significantly correlated within populations with the incidence of broken eggs.

4. No significant correlations were found within populations between the incidence of egg breakage and either egg weight, body weight, or shank length.  相似文献

Pullets reared to 18 weeks of age on diets containing no feeding stuffs of animal origin and without phosphorus supplementation showed no significant difference in egg yield compared with similar pullets fed rearing diets containing animal protein and added phosphorus.

During the laying stage, diets in commercial use at this centre gave significantly higher egg yields, better average egg prices due to superior grading results and a higher margin over food cost than the same diets modified to conform with the nutrient recommendations of the National Research Council of America (1960).

Where the supplementary protein in both types of layers' diet was of vegetable origin, egg yield, food cost and margin of income over food cost were all significantly inferior to groups fed comparable diets containing supplementary protein of both vegetable and animal origin.

Soyabean meal and sunflower seed meal gave significantly poorer results when used in combination as the sole protein supplement compared with soyabean meal plus methionine.  相似文献
