Ammonia-N (NH4+ + NH3) and total nitrogen (TN) efflux rates of Macrobrachium rosenbergii were measured during stepwise temperature changes (26 °C → 22 °C → 18 °C → 22 °C → 26 °C) at different rates. Sudden temperature reductions did not affect efflux rates, but sudden temperature rises evoked rapid and high increases in the efflux rates. A direct relationship between ammonia-N excretion and water temperature was observed when gradual temperature changes were effected over a 5 h period. When the animals were acclimated to a new temperature for 72 h, no clear effects of temperature on the efflux rates were found. Sudden temperature changes resulted in an increased proportion of ammonia-N in the total nitrogen excreted. It is suggested that temperature changes during the shipment of M. rosenbergii should be avoided or made gradually.  相似文献

First-feeding chinook salmon were fed either live adult Artemia franciscana or commercial feed over a 15-week period. Unexplained mortality began occurring in the Artemia-fed fish after 35 days on the diets, with cumulative mortality reaching 34.5% in the Artemia-fed fish compared with 4.3% in feed-fed fish. Necropsy examinations revealed systemic fungal yeast infections and the causative agent was cultured from kidneys. Fungal cells were observed in the transport water of Artemia shipments and within the Artemia. The Artemia were purchased from a retail supplier, and originated from salt ponds in San Francisco Bay (SFB), California. Artemia infection rates ranged from 0.5% to 37.5% (mean 16.5±3.59%) in shipments received over a 5-week period. The fungus was characterized by morphological and physiological properties and was identified as Metschnikowia sp., a pathogenic yeast of aquatic invertebrates. The yeast grew at 9–27 °C, and 0–180 ppt NaCl, and could tolerate salinity of at least 270 ppt. Sequence analysis of the divergent D1/D2 domain of ascomycetous yeast 26S ribosomal DNA identified the organism as Metschnikowia bicuspidata var. bicuspidata. The organism was found in water from the salt ponds and probably entered from the bay. Mortality due to the fungal infection stopped after changes were made in the handling of incoming Artemia shipments.  相似文献

The first larval feeding in Crassostrea gigas, detected by epifluorescence microscope, occurred 24 h after fertilization at 24°C and 30 h at 21°C. The amount of algal cells (Pavlova lutheri and Isochrysis galbana) necessary to have larvae with filled stomachs was estimated to be 800 cells per day at 24°C and 400 cells per day at 21°C.  相似文献

Caligus rogercresseyi, [Contrib. Zool. 69 (2000) 137] is the only caligid known to affect the salmon industry in Southern Chile. Economic losses due to reduced fish quality, cost of chemical treatment and outbreaks of other diseases such as the Piscirickettsiosis occur. The life cycle of C. rogercresseyi is described in rainbow trout reared in seawater tanks from observations made under natural conditions of light and temperature between January 1997 and April 1998. Fish were infected with laboratory-cultured larvae obtained from ovigerous females. Rainbow trout were periodically slaughtered for parasite collection and identification. C. rogercresseyi life cycle includes the following stages: two nauplius, one copepodid, four chalimus and the adult. No preadult stage was observed. Timing of the different stages of development was directly dependent on water temperature. The maturation of the eggs or the time for a complete life cycle took place at 45 days in July at 10.3 °C, 31–32 days in April at 12.4 and 12.8 °C, respectively, and at 26 days in November at 15.2 °C. In January, at 16.7 °C, only the appearance of first eggs were observed at 18 days. A simple degree–day (dd) model is proposed for each developmental stage between 4 and 17 °C, where the development rate is a linear function of the average temperature of water. Using this degree–day model, the proportion of fourth stage chalimus was maximum at 172 dd of effective temperature, adult males at 193 degree–days, adult females at 208 dd. The minimum temperature threshold is at 4.2 °C where there is no development of the parasite. The appearance of first eggs occurred at 231 dd and the first pigmented eggs at 277 dd. The temperature-independent degree–days value allowed to predict the timing of C. rogercresseyi life cycle at any temperature within the evaluated range.  相似文献

Oogenesis of abalone Haliotis discus hannai was examined histologically during a single spawning season using broodstock of various maturation conditions, which were controlled by effective accumulative temperature (EAT). The quality of eggs spawned was determined in relation to oogenesis. For histological examinations, three to five females were sacrificed at 300, 600, 850, 1050, and 1150 °C days EAT, without induction of artificial spawning. Other females were successfully induced to spawn at 700 °C days EAT and were reared following spawning. Three of these females were then sacrificed every 200 °C days EAT until 1300 °C days EAT. Gonad histology showed that two oocyte cohorts matured in H. discus hannai ovaries during a single spawning season. One mature oocyte cohort could be spawned in multiple times. The second oocyte cohort started developing after the first oocyte cohort had been spawned or reabsorbed, and became fully mature 400 °C days EAT after the first cohort was depleted. For egg quality measurements, three to five females were successfully induced to spawn at 850, 1050, 1150, 1900, and 2350 °C days EAT (Experiment 1). Three females were induced to spawn twice, at 700 and 1500 °C days EAT, resulting in two batches of eggs from the same individuals (Experiment 2). Total lipid and protein content of eggs were measured and were greater in eggs from the second cohort than in eggs from the first cohort. No carbohydrates were detected in eggs and there was no difference in cytoplasm volume between the two cohorts. In hatcheries producing H. discus hannai, it is important to increase post-larval starvation tolerance by increasing the quality of eggs, to yield higher and more consistent survival. The results of this study suggest that H. discus hannai hatcheries should use eggs from the second oocyte cohort, which are of higher quality, rather than eggs from the first oocyte cohort.  相似文献

Swimming behaviour of winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus) was recorded near baited hooks on natural fishing grounds using an underwater video camera. Winter flounder were observed to stay on or very close to the seabed, never rising to more than 0.6 m off bottom during 1 month of observation. Winter flounder were recorded to take bait actively at temperatures as low as −1.2 °C. Movement of winter flounder was characterised by a period of swimming off seabed followed by a period of resting on the seabed. The proportion of time swimming off seabed as opposed to resting on the seabed was positively related to water temperature. Flounder spent an average of 32% of time in swimming when at −1.2 °C compared with 67% when at 4.4 °C. Voluntary swimming speed of the flounder during the period of swimming was lower at lower temperatures. An average swimming speed of 0.52 body lengths per second (L s−1) at −1.2 °C was recorded compared with 0.95 L s−1 at 4.4 °C. Overall rate of movement was reduced by three-fold when water temperature fell from 4.4 to −1.2 °C. The reduced rate of movement at lower temperatures is discussed in relation to potential fishing area of fixed fishing gears such as gillnets.  相似文献

Reproductive biology and seasonal distribution of the swordtip squid (Photololigo edulis) in the northeastern waters of Taiwan were studied, based on the samples and fishery data collected from the torch-light fishery between 2003 and 2005. The swordtip squid only occurred in the Kuroshio Current and reached the coastal waters of Taiwan in January and February. From March to June, its distributional range extended to 27°N and 124°E as the front (the Kuroshio Current met the Mainland China Coastal Current) moved northward. The squid moved southwestward as the front retreated to 25°N and 123°E from July to September. After October, it was mainly distributed in the front area which shifted southwestward at this time.

Both percentage of mature individuals and gonado-somatic index (GSI) of the swordtip squid were high in spring and autumn and low in summer, indicating two spawning seasons per year. Comparison of mantle length (ML), body weight (BW) and gonad weight (GW) of mature specimens in spring and autumn indicated that individuals of autumn spawning group were larger and heavier than those of the spring spawning group. The GSI between the two spawning groups was not different in females but different in males. High GSI and high percentage of mature (stage IV) individuals in the area suggest that the inshore water off northern Taiwan between 25.5°N and 26.5°N, 121.5°E and 122.5°E could be a spawning ground for the swordtip squid.  相似文献

Incubation of northern snake-necked turtle (Chelodina rugosa) eggs and subsequent sale of hatchlings for the pet industry has the potential to provide culturally suitable employment for indigenous communities in northern Australia. Developmental arrest in response to egg inundation is unique to C. rugosa. Eggs can be stored under water for up to 10 weeks without appreciable impact on egg or embryo survival, allowing the transport and sale of eggs into niche markets without high levels of mortality, and permitting eggs to accumulate in diapause until there are sufficient numbers to incubate as batches. Eggs that are not inundated or inundated for short periods experience similar survival rates to eggs inundated for lengthy periods. Incubation temperature influences embryo survival and development period in C. rugosa. Embryonic survival is greatest at 26 °C, steadily declining as temperature increases to 32 °C. A similar increase in incubation temperature decreases incubation period by approximately 40 days, however almost half of this variation is attributed to the increase in incubation temperature from 26 to 28 °C. Hatchling growth in C. rugosa is characterized by two phases. There is an initial phase of relatively slow growth under the partial influence of initial egg size and incubation duration, followed by a second phase of relatively rapid growth under the partial influence of water temperature and mass at hatching. Post-hatching survival is negatively correlated with duration of egg inundation and water temperature. Evidence suggests that inundation of C. rugosa eggs for 6 weeks, incubation of embryos at 28 °C and raising hatchlings in 28 °C water will yield the best overall outcomes.  相似文献

Effects of temperature and salinity on eggs and yolksac larvae of Polydactylus sexfilis (Cuvier and Valenciennes) were examined in laboratory experiments. Data on developmental rates as influenced by temperature are presented. Larval length at 95% yolksac absorption was maximized between 23.8 and 28.6°C. Based on the development of functional eyes and jaws, larvae were judged capable of feeding before the yolk was completely absorbed. Larvae incubated at intermediate temperatures also had larger amounts of yolk remaining when eyes and jaws were judged functional. Temperature and salinity effects on hatching success, survival at the end of the yolksac stage, and morphological abnormalities were studied in a 10 × 5 (temperature × salinity) array of treatments. In 34‰ sea water, normalized larval survival at the end of the yolksac stage was greater than 50% between temperatures of 21.9 and 28.0°C. Larval survival decreased at lower temperatures and salinities. Proportions of abnormal larvae increased at temperature and salinity extremes, and normal development was maximized between 26 and 34‰. Larvae (74 h after fertilization) were more tolerant to extreme high temperatures than were newly fertilized eggs. Upper salinity tolerance limits of 42-h larvae were greater at 26.2°C than at 23.5 or 29.2°C, and lower salinity was less tolerated at the two extreme temperatures. Based on the results, recommended temperatures and salinities for rearing P. sexfilis eggs and early larvae are 24–28°C and 26–34‰.  相似文献

Certain physiological responses of two groups of rainbow trout acclimated at 10 and 17°C to a sudden change in salinity were investigated in order to determine the most appropriate temperature for direct transfer in salt water. Plasma osmolarities of fish acclimated at 17°C increased at a much faster rate following transfer and approached a much higher value than that reached by the fish acclimated at 10°C. The same was apparent for body tissue dehydration. Haematocrit values, the number of red blood cells, as well as red cell volume showed no significant difference between the two groups of fish for most of the experimental period. The larger increases in plasma osmotic pressure and tissue dehydration observed at 17°C are discussed in connection with the physiological adjustments accompanying higher temperature acclimation.  相似文献

The effects of six storage temperatures (5°C, 10°C, 15°C, 20°C, 25°C and room temperature) and six storage durations (6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h) on pre-settlement larvae of Crassostrea iredalei indicated that settlement rate deteriorated with time for all temperatures. The highest settlement rate (40.1%) was attained at a storage temperature of 20°C for 6 h. This was followed by 10°C and 15°C for 6 h, with mean percent sets of 35.4% and 33.5%, respectively. An above-average set of 29.5% was obtained for the control larvae (larvae directly from the rearing tanks) compared to larvae stored between 10°C and 20°C for 12 to 24 h (21.1–28.2%). Average sets obtained for storage between 10°C and 20°C was 16.6–19.7% for up to 48 h, and sets for room temperature (ca. 30°C) and 5°C for 12 h were 11.9% and 16.9%, respectively; whereas at 25°C the set rate was 10.7% for 6 h. Storage at all other levels of temperature and duration resulted in poor set rates of less than 8%. All successfully set larvae from this experiment were further kept in the hatchery for three weeks to observe their short-term post-settlement survival. Survival rates were closely related to the setting rates, whereby higher sets contributed to better survival rates. The highest survival rates, 61.3–84.8%, were recorded for larvae set at temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C with a storage time of up to 48 h. These levels were comparable to the control (68.0%) and 5°C for up to 12 h (68.9%). Storage at 72 h resulted in total mortality at all temperatures, except for those stored at of 10°C (51.5% survival) and 20°C (14.7%).  相似文献

The aim of this trial was to study the utilization of dietary protein by seabass juveniles with 5.5 g mean body weight, at two water temperatures: 18°C and 25°C. For that purpose, the fish were fed for 12 weeks, four isoenergetic diets with different protein levels (36, 42, 48, and 56%). At the end of the trial, growth rate and feed utilization were significantly better at the higher water temperature. Within each temperature, specific growth rate and feed efficiency were significantly higher with the 48 and 56% protein diets than with the other diets. At 25°C, feed efficiency was also significantly better with the 56% than with the 48% protein diet. N retention (g kg average body weight−1 day−1) was higher at 25°C than at 18°C but, as a % N intake the inverse was true. Although at 25°C N retention (% N intake) was not different among groups, retention in g kg ABW−1 day−1 was significantly higher with the 56% protein diet than with 36 and 42% protein diets. On the contrary, at 18°C N retention (g kg ABW−1 day−1) was similar among groups while as a percentage of N intake it was inversely related to the dietary protein level. Regarding energy utilization, at each temperature, there were no differences among dietary treatments on energy retention (g kg ABW−1 day−1). As a % of energy intake, energy retention significantly increased with the increase of dietary protein level at 25°C, while at 18°C, there were no significant differences among groups. Within each temperature, at the end of the trial, there were no differences among groups in proximate composition of whole fish. Apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, protein and energy significantly improved with the increase of water temperature but, within each temperature, there were no significant differences among groups. The results of this study indicate that, regardless of water temperature, the dietary protein requirement for growth seems to be satisfied with a diet containing 48% protein. Growth and feed efficiency were significantly higher at the higher temperature, however, protein utilization was more efficient at the lower temperature.  相似文献

A rapid extraction procedure and a HPLC method for quantitative measurements of the concentration of rotenone in oysters (Ostrea edulis) and in seawater is presented. The absorption rate of rotenone by oysters was rapid. With an average rotenone concentration in the seawater of 26 ppb, the concentration in the oysters reached 4.6 ppm after 4 days of exposure. The t1/2 of the excretion of rotenone was 40 h at 10°C. The absorption rate was highly affected by both the rotenone concentration in the seawater and the seawater temperature. Rotenone was quite stable in seawater at low temperatures. At an average temperature close to 0°C, 18% of the rotenone added was still present 45 days after preparing the solution (1 ppm Gullviks rotenone mixture) in seawater. The acute mortality observed was closely related to the measured concentration of rotenone in the oysters.  相似文献

Sperm physiology, in vivo artificial insemination and spawning of the ocean pout (Macrozoarces americanus L.), a marine bottom fish, were studied. Milt was collected from the reproductive tract of mature males by suction using a catheter. The uncontaminated milt, having a very low sperm concentration, contains highly motile spermatozoa and sperm motility was retained in vitro at 4 °C for at least 24 h in both seminal plasma and ovarian slime collected from the oviduct of pre-spawning females. Instead of activating sperm, dilution in sea water instantly immobilized the spermatozoa of ocean pout. Osmolarity and pH of ocean pout seminal plasma were in the ranges 365–406 mOsM and 7.2–7.5, respectively. A study of the ionic composition of ocean pout seminal plasma demonstrated the presence of various ions including Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Cl, with a remarkably lower K+ concentration compared to that from other fish species. Since injections of milt containing motile sperm into the ovaries of pre-spawning females, which spawned in the absence of males, yielded fertilized ocean pout eggs, it is concluded that the ocean pout exhibits internal fertilization. The larvae hatched after 3 months of egg incubation in ambient sea water (9–10 °C). With proper timing of in vivo artificial insemination of mature females, fertilized ocean pout eggs can be obtained from fish reared in captivity.  相似文献

The self-feeding pattern of yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, maintained in floating net cages was examined throughout a year, and the influence of seasonal changes of the photoperiod and water temperature on the feeding pattern was investigated. Two groups of 50 yellowtail (initial mean body weight about 50 and 80 g, respectively) were kept in two experimental net cages (2×3×4 m deep), with a self-feeding device installed on each. It was possible to maintain yellowtail in net cages using a self-feeder throughout almost a year. The number of daily food demands was greatly affected by the seasonal changes in water temperature. Yellowtail showed high self-feeding activity, above 18 °C; depressing water temperatures did not influence the activity when the water temperature was over 18 °C. However, the activity decreased when the water temperature fell below 18 °C. The feeding pattern in a 24-h period was greatly affected by the temporal changes in light intensity. Annual observations revealed that yellowtail showed generally crepuscular plus nocturnal feeding behavior and had two peaks of feeding activity a day. These peaks appeared at dawn and dusk; moreover, a clear association between the most active time of self-feeding and the period of the greatest change in light intensity was observed. The results suggest that a change in light intensity might stimulate the appetite of yellowtail or that there is a light level at which yellowtail prefer to eat.  相似文献

Mass mortalities of cultured zhikong scallops (Chlamys farreri) have occurred each summer in most culture areas of northern China since 1996. Among the hypothesized causes are high culture density, infectious disease and genetic inbreeding. To investigate these potential agents, C. farreri were deployed at three densities (low, medium and high) at three sites (Jiaonan, Penglai and Yantai) in the summer of 2000. Scallops were sampled for survival, growth and histopathology before, during and after a mortality episode. Most of the mortality occurred in July and August, during and toward the later part of the spawning season, when water temperature reached 23–26 °C. Final cumulative mortalities reached 85% to 90% at all three sites. Scallops in the medium and high densities had higher initial death rates than did those at the low density. High densities also inhibited growth. Ciliates from the genus Trichodina, larvae of various organisms and anomalous secretions were observed in sections of the gill cavity, with highest prevalence during and at the end of the mortality period. Prokaryotic inclusion bodies were found in the soft tissues, but their prevalence was low and apparently without correlation with mortalities. Genetic analysis with random amplified polymorphic DNA markers showed slightly lower heterozygosity in the cultured stocks (0.301) than in the wild stocks (0.331). It is possible that the mortalities are caused by a combination of several factors such as stress associated with reproduction, high temperature, overcrowding and poor circulation in the growout cages, opportunistic invaders or pathogens, and possibly inbreeding.  相似文献

Seasonal levels of serum vitellogenin (VG) were measured in adult and juvenile (10–30 months old) female channel catfish using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In adults sampled during a 2-year period, the highest mean (±s.e.) VG level was 30.21 ± 5.36 mg/ml in May before spawning and declined to 3.79 ± 0.89 mg/ml in June after the fish had spawned. Oocyte diameter increased from September to November, remained the same until February, then increased again until maximum mean diameter of 2356 ± 49 μm was measured in May. Vitellogenin was detected in the serum of juvenile fish that were 12 months old, but yolk granules were not visible in hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of oocytes until the fish were 18 months old. Mean serum VG levels of juvenile fish were lower than the adults, and no VG peak was observed in the juvenile fish. Vitellogenin was present in the serum throughout the year in adult fish and in juveniles older than 12 months.  相似文献

Abstract. In Kuwait, the culture of tilapia, Oreochromis spilurus (Günther), in sea cages is limited by water temperature for mid-April to mid-November only. Using fry spawned in April, one production cycle is passible, but marketing time is limited to less than 20 days. With a market capacity of 1 tonne/day, the production of 100 tonnes/year planned for a commercial farm requires 100 marketing days. It is therefore necessary to shorten production time by stocking larger fingerlings to extend the marketing period. Four fingerling production schedules were tested, using fry spawned (1) in May, grown normally; (2) in May, stunted; (3) in August; and (4) in December. The fish were initially stocked and overwintered in fibreglass tanks. On 19 April, the fish were transferred to 1-m3 net cages at 150 fish/cage and grown to marketable size (<300g). Results showed that fish spawned in May (normal and stunted), August and December were harvested in July, August and October and can be marketed for 125, 100 and 60 days, respectively. It is apparent that the production of 100 tonnes of tilapia to be marketed over a period of 100 days is possible using fry produced in August; the profit, however, is marginal. Fry spawned in December gave the highest profit.  相似文献

Eggs of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, were treated with cytochalasin B (1 mg/l, 20°C, 20 min), at different time intervals after in vitro fertilization. Ploidy levels were assessed by chromosome counting on 1- and 54-day-old specimens. Evidence for bimodal distribution was found to separate meiotic I and meiotic II triploids. Peaks were located at 30–35 min and 90–100 min post-fertilization, triploid rates reaching 70% and 68% respectively. Tetraploid embryos were induced in two major groups. The effective shocks were those applied at 5–25 min and 260–280 min after fertilization (respectively 40% and 53% tetraploid metaphases). Karyological examinations of embryos and spat, carried out 20 h and 54 days after fertilization, showed a differential mortality among triploids and diploids in all treated groups and no tetraploids among the spat.  相似文献

The influence of water temperature (17 and 25 °C) and a period of fasting on the self-selection of macronutrients were examined in common carp held on a 12:12-h light/dark cycle. Eight replicate groups of juvenile carp (ca. 15 g body weight at 17 °C and 25 g at 25 °C) were fed with three test diets [high-protein (HP), high-fat (HF) and high-carbohydrate (HC) diets] by individual self-feeders for 3 weeks, followed by a 2-week period of fasting and then 3 weeks of refeeding. At 17 °C, the carp initially selected the HP and HF diets [HP/HF/HC (%)=38:40:22], whereas at 25 °C, the carp selected the HP diet over the others (55:21:24). After fasting, the carp tended to increase their demand for the HF diet at 17 °C and for the HC diet at 25 °C, but the overall self-selection of the test diets did not differ markedly from that prior to fasting. Carp held at 17 °C had higher relative whole body fat content and plasma triglyceride concentration; the latter decreased markedly during fasting. These results suggest that water temperature influences the macronutrient selection by carp: a relatively high demand for both protein and fat at 17 °C and for protein at 25 °C. Two weeks of fasting, however, did not markedly alter their macronutrient selection.  相似文献
