The effects of a single artificial infestation with sarcoptic mite (Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis DeGeer) on weight gain and lymphocyte blastogenic responses were studied in untreated and fenvalerate-treated pigs. Average daily feed intake, average daily gain and feed efficiency were monitored for 5 weeks in 32 infested and 16 uninfested pigs. Total and differential leukocyte counts were determined and lymphocyte proliferative responses, using a mitogen-stimulated lymphocyte blastogenesis assay, were evaluated in 24 pigs. Sarcoptic mite infestation or treatment for sarcoptic mange did not affect total or differential leukocyte counts (P greater than 0.10). Differences were not observed in weight gain or lymphocyte blastogenic responses between infested and uninfested pigs.  相似文献

Six hundred forty growing-finishing pigs (initial BW = 23.2 +/- 4.8 kg) were used in a 12-wk study (final BW = 95.5 +/- 10.2 kg) to quantify the effects of group size (10, 20, 40, and 80 pigs/pen) on performance, tail biting, and use of widely distributed feed resources. One single-space wet/dry feeder was provided for every 10 pigs, and floor allowance was 0.76 m2/pig in all treatment groups. Weight gain and feed intake were measured every 2 wk. At weighing, a tail-biting injury score was given to each pig. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio before regrouping at the beginning of the experiment, 24 to 48 h after regrouping, and on the last day of each trial. The use of feeders by individual pigs was assessed by behavioral observations. Average daily gain for the entire 12-wk trial did not differ among group sizes (861, 873, 854, and 845 g/d for groups of 10, 20, 40, and 80, respectively; P > 0.10). During the first 2 wk, ADG was lower for pigs in groups of 40 (554 g/d) than pigs in groups of 10 (632 g/d; P < 0.05), but not pigs in groups of 20 or 80 (602 and 605 g/d, respectively). Average daily feed intake, feed efficiency, and variability in final BW within a pen also did not differ among group sizes. Tail-biting injury scores increased throughout the study, but did not differ among group sizes. Similar proportions of pigs were removed from the trial for health reasons, primarily due to tail biting, in all treatments. Individual pigs in each group size ate from most, if not all, of the feeders in the pen. There was no evidence of spatial subgrouping within the larger groups. The results suggest that housing growing-finishing pigs in groups of up to 80 pigs is not detrimental to productivity and health if space allowance is adequate and feed resources are evenly distributed.  相似文献

Effects of restricted feeding (80% ad libitum), feeding a low-energy diet containing 84% DE (2.95 Mcal/kg) of the control diet, and implantation of Revalor H (140 mg trenbolone acetate plus 14 mg estradiol-17beta) on growth, carcass traits, and serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and IGFbinding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) were studied in crossbred finishing barrows beginning from 59 +/- 0.9 kg of body weight. Blood samples were taken every 3 wk and the animals were slaughtered at approximately 105 kg body weight. Restricted feeding caused a decrease (P < 0.01) in ADG; feeding the low-energy diet was effective in reducing backfat thickness but decreased gain:feed; the implantation caused a decrease in ADG, feed intake, and backfat thickness and increased gain:feed. Overall pork quality based on pH, drip loss, and the lightness in color of longissimus muscle was not affected by any of the treatments. Serum IGF-I concentration increased following the implantation but did not change (P > 0.05) due to other treatments. Immunoreactive IGFBP-3 concentration was not changed by any of the treatments. Overall ADG was positively correlated with early-stage (d 21) IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations only in unimplanted barrows, whereas backfat thickness was negatively correlated with d-42 IGF-I concentration in all but unimplanted barrows with ad libitum intake. A strong positive correlation (P < 0.01) between IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations was apparent with increasing age of the animals. Results suggest that growth rate and backfat thickness are decreased by a moderate restriction of feed or energy intake with no accompanying changes in circulating IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations and that the beneficial effect of Revalor H implantation on feed efficiency may be mediated, in part, by IGF-I. Moreover, both IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations may be useful as growth indices in pigs.  相似文献

Trace mineral status was evaluated in a 2 x 3 factorial treatment array with a total of 34 barrows growing from 25 to 55 kg live weight. Treatments included three levels of feed intake (100, 80 and 60% of ad libitum intake) and exogenous pituitary growth hormone (pGH) therapy (0 and 100 micrograms/kg BW daily). Blood was collected prior to slaughter for the determination of hematocrit and serum trace metal concentrations; tissues (liver, heart, kidney, bone and muscle) were obtained when pigs were slaughtered at 55 kg. Hematocrits and serum Fe were lower in pGH-treated pigs than in controls at all levels of feed intake. Serum Cu was increased by feed restriction but was not altered by pGH therapy. The concentration of serum Zn was not affected by either treatment. Concentrations of hepatic Fe and Cu were lower in pGH-treated pigs than in controls but were higher in feed-restricted pigs than in ad libitum-fed pigs. However, the total amounts of hepatic Fe and Cu were similar in pGH-treated pigs to concentrations in controls. The concentration of hepatic Zn was not influenced by either pGH treatment or feed intake. Femur weights were marginally greater in pGH-treated pigs, probably due to elevated water content. Iron concentration in bone was higher in pGH-treated pigs than in control pigs, whereas Ca, Cu and Zn were not influenced by pGH treatment or feed restriction. Feed intake and pGH treatment did not influence the concentrations of Fe, Cu or Zn in muscle. These findings indicate that pGH therapy affects the metabolism of Fe but has little impact on the overall composition of body ash.  相似文献

The efficacy of recombinantly derived porcine somatotropin (rpST) in improving the performance and carcass characteristics of heavyweight finishing pigs was determined. In Study 1, 36 pigs were killed for determination of initial carcass composition at 102 kg, and 36 pigs each were given 0, 1.5, 3, 6, or 9 mg of rpST/d from 102 to 136 kg live weight. Corn-soybean meal diets fed contained 19.8% CP and greater than 1% lysine. Study 2 tested the effects of 3 mg/d on pigs for 4 wk from 84 kg BW fed a corn-soybean meal or a triticale-barley-peas diet. Performance variables (ADG, average daily feed intake [ADFI], and feed efficiency [FE]) were measured weekly. Treatment with rpST increased (P less than .01) ADG and FE and decreased (P less than .01) ADFI in both studies. In Study 1, leaf fat, backfat thickness, belly thickness, and carcass fat were all decreased (P less than .01) linearly by rpST. Loin eye area (LEA), total trimmed lean, and total protein content were increased quadratically (P less than .01). At the 3-mg dose, ADFI, ADG, and FE were 87, 130, and 137% of control, and LEA, backfat, total protein gain, and total fat gain were 107, 80, 136, and 52% of control. Loin eye area was not increased (P greater than .05) in the pigs in Study 2; however, backfat thickness was reduced 16% by rpST (P less than .01). The effects of rpST were the same on both dietary regimens (P greater than .05). These studies demonstrate the effectiveness of rpST in increasing ADG and carcass leanness and improving FE in heavyweight pigs and in pigs fed alternative feedstuffs.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of eating space and availability of water within feeders on the productivity and behavior of growing/finishing pigs. In Exp. 1, 12 commercial feeders were classified as being either single-space (SS) or multiple-space (MS), and either as dry (D) or wet/dry (WD), resulting in two SS-D, four MS-D, three SS-WD and three MS-WD models. Each model was evaluated using four pens of 12 pigs, which were fed a mash diet throughout the growing/finishing period (25 to 106 kg). Pigs were videotaped when they were approximately 40 and 80 kg in weight to determine eating behavior. The number of feeding spaces did not affect the productivity of the pigs, but the presence of water within the feeder resulted in increases in ADFI (P < .05) and ADG (P < .05) and a reduction in carcass lean (P < .05). Pigs eating from SS feeders spent 15% less time eating than those fed from two-space feeders (P < .05), and occupancy rate for feeding spaces was increased by 75% (P < .05). The WD feeders also resulted in a reduction (17%) in eatingtime compared to D models (P < .01), and occupancy rate for WD feeders was similarly reduced (P < .05). Pigs spent 16% less time eating when they weighed approximately 80 kg than when they weighed 40 kg (P < .01). In Exp. 2, rate of eating was determined during a short test on the same 12 feeder models for both small (48 kg) and large (90 kg) pigs. Large pigs ate faster than small pigs, but eating rate was not affected by feeding space or presence of water in the feeder. In Exp. 3, eating rate was determined for small amounts of dry or wet feed. Premixing water with the feed (1:1 ratio by weight) increased eating speed (P < .01). We concluded that 12 pigs can be fed from a single-space feeder without affecting productivity. The inclusion of water within a feeder decreases time spent eating, but it increases ADFI and ADG. When pigs are small, they spend more time eating, and feeder occupancy rates are higher than when they are large.  相似文献

Guinea pigs infested with Glossina morsitans weekly for 5 weeks exhibited marked peripheral blood basophil and eosinophil responses to each infestation, with a dominant cutaneous basophil response to challenge infestation. G. morsitans feeding was completed within 3--10 min, depending upon prior exposure, and flies were reluctant to feed and probed longer on hyperexposed animals. Blood basophil responses exhibited the greatest increases over controls (up to 12-fold) compared to eosinophils (up to 3-fold). After the first and third infestations, both basophil and eosinophil levels increased, whereas after the second and fourth infestations both cell types declined. Greatest blood basophil responses developed after the first infestation with levels ranging from 0 to 14 +/- 9 cells/mm3 in infested animals to 0 and 2 +/- 2 cells/mm3 in uninfested controls. Eosinophilia increased with each infestation where levels ranged from 57 +/- 23 cells/mm3 after the first tsetse feeding to 110 +/- 20 cells/mm3 after the fourth infestation; compared to 11 +/- 11 to 50 +/- 12 cells/mm3 in uninfested controls. Fly-feeding sites were marked by hemorrhages, and probing behavior resulted in a line of small hemorrhages when the underside of the skin was examined. Histologically, G. morsitans feeding sites in naive guinea pigs 24 h post-infestation were dominated by mononuclear cells (93% of the infiltrate) with a weak granulocyte component, of which eosinophils were dominant (1.3%). Tsetse feeding sites in guinea pigs exposed 3 times previously were again dominated by mononuclear cells (57% of the infiltrate), but granulocytes comprised a significant part of the response (43% of the infiltrate) where basophils were dominant (25%).  相似文献

A study on the development and effect of experimental Sarcoptes scabiei var suis infestations in growing pigs is described. Pigs were infested at either weekly or fortnightly intervals throughout each experimental and individual growth rates and feed conversion ratios were determined. The animals were fed diets which contained either optimal or sub-optimal levels of protein. They were housed either intensively or extensively. In all experiments the majority of infested animals developed a generalised hypersensitivity to sarcoptes mites and performed significantly less efficiently than non-infested littermates. Mean growth rates were depressed from 9.2 to 12.5 per cent and feed conversion efficiencies by a similar margin. Well fed, intensively housed pigs developed a more severe hypersensitivity reaction than poorly fed, extensively housed pigs.  相似文献

A randomised block design study was conducted to evaluate the effects of mange on cattle. Twenty-four Simmentaler Fleckvieh bulls were formed into eight replicates of three bulls based on Day -56 body weight (288-414 kg). Within replicates bulls were randomly allocated to groups G1: uninfested control, G2: infested control or G3: infested, treated with 0.2mg ivermectin/kg (1% ivermectin injection; IVOMEC, Merial) on Day 0. The G2 and G3 bulls were infested with Sarcoptes/Chorioptes mites on Days -56 and -49. Feed consumption was recorded daily throughout the study (Days -56 to 56). Body weights were measured and serum samples collected. Mites were counted at bi-weekly intervals from Day -14 on. The carcasses of the bulls and the leather produced from their hides were evaluated. Differences between variables were declared significant if P相似文献

In this study, the rate of S. scabiei var. suis transmission among finishing pigs was quantified in a contact transmission experiment. Forty piglets originating from a mange free farrow-to-finish herd were randomly allocated to three groups and one S. scabiei var. suis infested finishing pig was subsequently added to each of these groups. After 35 days, the three seeder pigs were removed from the groups and the remaining 40 pigs were re-allocated to five pens. Ear scrapings, to be examined for mites, were collected from each pig on days 1, 14, 28, 42, 56, and 84 of the experiment. Blood samples, to be tested for antibodies against S. scabiei, were collected from each pig on days 0, 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84 and 112 after the introduction of the seeder pigs. From the results of the ear scrapings and the blood samples the number of susceptible (not infested) and infested pigs was derived at the time of each sample collection and the number of new infestations in the intervals between the sample collections. From these data the infestation rate parameter beta (average number of new infestations per infested pig per day) was estimated by use of a Generalised Linear Model (GLM) and accordingly, beta was estimated at 0.056 (95% CI: 0.037-0.085) infestations per infested pig per day.Next, by use of beta, the transmission of S. scabiei was simulated in a population of 100 finishing pigs for 100 days after the introduction of a single infested pig. For this purpose, 500 simulations were done. The 90% confidence interval of the number of infested pigs at day 100 ranged from 12 to 88 (median: 63). It was concluded that transmission of S. scabiei among finishing pigs is slow. Due to the presumed lower contact rate between sows as compared to finishing pigs, it is anticipated that transmission of S. scabiei among sows will even be slower than among finishers These findings are of particular interest for the development of surveillance programmes for S. scabiei free herds.  相似文献

This study evaluated the influence of concomitant infections with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae on growth performance, serum metabolite concentrations, and serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in growing pigs. Twenty-two barrows (10 weeks of age) were treated with either an intranasal administration of PRRSV and an intratracheal infusion of M. hyopneumoniae (treatment; n = 8) or a sham inoculation with medium (sham; n = 8), or were not treated (control; n = 6). The sham pigs were matched by body weight and pair-wise fed with treatment pigs. Pigs were weighed on the day of inoculation (day 0) and at 4 weeks postinoculation (day 28). Blood samples were collected prior to inoculation and at weekly intervals for 4 weeks. Pigs in the treatment group exhibited clinical signs consistent with PRRSV infection and M. hyopneumoniae pneumonia. Diagnostic procedures confirmed that treatment pigs were inoculated with PRRSV and M. hyopneumoniae and that sham and control pigs remained free of both pathogens. Average daily gain and feed conversion did not differ among the 3 groups. The IGF-I levels differed (P < 0.05) between control and treatment pigs, even after feed intake returned to similar levels among groups. At day 7, IGF-I concentrations were greater in sham pigs compared with treatment pigs, despite similar feed intake. Sham inoculation and decreased feed intake in sham pigs did not alter serum IGF-I concentrations. Evidently, IGF-I status of pigs affected with disease is influenced by nutritional and nonnutritional factors during the disease process.  相似文献

Twelve replications of four littermate pigs from a porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) naive herd were weaned (11 +/- 2 d of age) and penned individually in isolation rooms. Pigs were randomly allotted within litter to one of four dietary soy daidzein concentrations (0, 200, 400, or 800 ppm) to quantify the effect of daidzein on growth and immune response during a PRRS challenge. Daidzein was provided as the soy aglycone. At 27 +/- 2 d of age (4.9 +/- 1.4 kg BW), pigs were oronasally inoculated with 10(4.3) PRRS virus/mL from strain JA142 in a 2-mL dose. Blood was collected every 4 d from d 0 to 24 after inoculation and analyzed for serum PRRS virus, interferon, and alpha-1-acylglycoprotein (AGP) concentrations. Serum virus and interferon peaked at 10(5.3) virus/mL and 79% protection, respectively, at 4 d after inoculation and then declined steadily. Serum AGP concentration peaked at 12 d after inoculation. Each log increase in serum virus was associated with an increase in serum interferon, which resulted in a decrease of pig ADG and daily feed intake of 0.019 kg and 0.023 kg, respectively, in 5.8-kg pigs and a feed intake reduction of 0.024 kg in 12.5-kg pigs. Dietary daidzein additions did not (P > 0.3) alter the serum concentration after inoculation of PRRS virus (10(1.79), 10(1.94), 10(1.86), 10(1.93) virus/mL of serum) or AGP. Serum concentrations of interferon responded cubically (30.3, 28.9, 29.4, and 31.1% protection) as dietary daidzein concentrations increased; however, the magnitude of the response decreased over time. Dietary daidzein additions resulted in improvements in daily pig gain, daily feed intake, and gain/feed during periods of peak viremia (d 4 to 16 after inoculation), but not in periods when systemic virus concentrations were minimized (d 16 to 24 after inoculation), resulting in a daidzein x days after inoculation interaction. Based on these data, the magnitude of the growth responses that occur in pigs infected with a virus is quantitatively related to the animal's serum concentration of the virus and interferon, and dietary soy daidzein at 200 or 400 ppm is a weak enhancer of body growth in virally challenged pigs.  相似文献

Porcine infectious anemia is a well-known disease that occurs worldwide and is caused by the unculturable hemotrophic bacterium Mycoplasma suis. The actual prevalence and impact of M. suis infections, however, remain fairly unknown. This study examined the prevalence of M. suis in post-weaning pigs by employing a quantitative real-time LightCycler PCR. M. suis infections were detected in 164 out of 1176 feeder pigs (20-30 kg; 13.9%) as well as on 79 out of 196 pig farms (40.3%). The comparison of PCR results with microscopic investigation of acridine-orange-stained blood smears revealed a considerably lower sensitivity of the microscopic method: only 35 out of 1176 blood smears were microscopically positive. The microscopic detection of M. suis was shown to be closely linked to the bacterial load in the blood. M. suis infection is associated with significantly decreased hematocrit, erythrocyte counts and hemoglobin concentrations as well as significantly higher bilirubin concentrations. Furthermore, M. suis blood loads were significantly associated with erythrocyte count, hematocrit, hemoglobin, glucose and iron concentrations indicating that high M. suis loads are connected with clinical anemia. In conclusion, this study has shown, that M. suis infections are often under-diagnosed in pig husbandry and can therefore lead to considerable economic profit losses in pig husbandry. Furthermore, our study has shown that the LightCycler PCR could be an appropriate tool for a sufficiently coherent identification of M. suis in latent carrier animals in view of introducing effective treatment and disease control measures.  相似文献

In this study, the performance of male pigs immunized against GnRH was determined in relation to the onset of their biological response to the immunization. Pigs were immunized at 9 and 17 wk of age and were housed in a pen together with both a surgically castrated and an intact boar littermate. Feed intake was restricted to 2.8 to 3.2 times maintenance requirement for energy. Animals were weighed weekly and slaughtered at 108 kg BW. Depending on the time of onset of the response after immunization in terms of biological effects, immunized pigs were retrospectively grouped into two categories. One category consisted of the immunized pigs, which had undetectable or low levels of LH and testosterone at the time of booster immunization-known as "early" responding immunocastrates (E-IM, n = 8), whereas the "late" responding immunocastrates (L-IM, n = 7) had substantial LH and testosterone levels at that time. This dichotomy of the response to immunization also was reflected in testis weight, with 17 g and 40 g for E-IM and L-IM pigs, respectively. At slaughter, testis size and weight were reduced (P < 0.001) in the immunocastrated pigs as compared to the intact boars. Androstenone concentrations in backfat of all immunocastrated pigs were undetectable. Growth performance (i.e., ADG and feed efficiency [FE, g gain/kg feed]), was better in boars and L-IM pigs than in surgical castrates and E-IM pigs (P < 0.05). Average daily gain and FE did not differ between E-IM pigs and the surgical castrates, but intact boars performed better than L-IM (P < 0.02). There were no significant differences in carcass quality (backfat thickness and meat percentage) between boars and surgical castrates at slaughter. However, for both characteristics L-IM pigs and intact boars performed better (P < 0.03) than E-IM pigs. Thus, growth performance in L-IM is better than in either E-IM or surgical castrates.  相似文献

Angus bulls and heifers from lines divergently selected for serum IGF-I concentration were used to evaluate the effects of IGF-I selection line on growth performance and feed efficiency in 2 studies. In study 1, bulls (low line, n = 9; high line, n = 8; initial BW = 367.1 +/- 22.9 kg) and heifers (low line, n = 9; high line, n = 13; initial BW = 286.4 +/- 28.6 kg) were adapted to a roughage-based diet (ME = 1.95 Mcal/kg of DM) for 24 d and fed individually for 77 d by using Calan gate feeders. In study 2, bulls (low line, n = 15; high line, n = 12; initial BW = 297.5 +/- 34.4 kg) and heifers (low line, n = 9; high line, n = 20; initial BW = 256.0 +/- 25.1 kg) were adapted to a grain-based diet (ME = 2.85 Mcal/kg of DM) for 32 d and fed individually for 70 d by using Calan gate feeders. Blood samples were collected at weaning and at the start and end of each study, and serum IGF-I concentration was determined. Residual feed intake (RFI) was calculated, within study, as the residual from the linear regression of DMI on midtest BW(0.75), ADG, sex, sex by midtest BW(0.75) and sex by ADG. In study 1, calves from the low IGF-I selection line had similar initial and final BW and ADG, compared with calves from the high IGF-I selection line. In addition, DMI and feed conversion ratio were similar between IGF-I selection lines; however, calves from the low IGF-I selection line tended (P < 0.10) to have lesser RFI than calves from the high IGF-I selection line (-0.26 vs. 0.24 +/- 0.31 kg/d). In study 2, IGF-I selection line had no influence on performance or feed efficiency traits. However, there was a tendency (P = 0.15) for an IGF-I selection line x sex interaction for RFI. Bulls from the low IGF-I selection line had numerically lesser RFI than those from the high IGF-I selection line, whereas in heifers, the IGF-I selection line had no effect on RFI. In studies 1 and 2, weaning and initial IGF-I concentrations were not correlated with either feed conversion ratio or RFI. However, regression analysis revealed a sex x IGF-I concentration interaction for initial IGF-I concentration in study 1 and weaning IGF-I concentration in study 2 such that the regression coefficient was positive for bulls and negative for heifers. These data suggest that genetic selection for postweaning serum IGF-I concentration had a minimal effect on RFI in beef cattle.  相似文献

Lice may serve as biological or mechanical vectors for various infectious agents. To investigate louse infestation of ruminants and pigs, and pathogens potentially transmitted by them, anopluran lice (n=1182) were collected in Hungary, and evaluated for the presence of anaplasma, rickettsia and haemotropic mycoplasma DNA. On cattle the following species were found: Linognathus vituli (57%), Haematopinus eurysternus (38%) and Solenopotes capillatus (5%). L. vituli had a lower mean individual count/host when compared to H. eurysternus. On calves only L. vituli was observed, with a higher louse burden than on full-grown cattle. H. eurysternus and S. capillatus were more likely to occur simultaneously with another species on the same host, than L. vituli. Goats infested with Linognathus stenopsis had the overall highest prevalence (68%), while pigs harbouring Haematopinus suis showed the lowest (<1%). Anaplasma DNA was detected in 50% of pools analysed. In L. vituli Anaplasma ovis (or a closely related novel Anaplasma marginale genotype) was identified. Anaplasma-positivity of H. suis suggests that pigs may extend the reservoir and/or host spectrum of relevant species. Anaplasma-infected L. stenopsis pools show for the first time that caprine anaplasmosis is endemic in Hungary. Rickettsia spp. were demonstrated from Linognathus spp. and H. eurysternus. No haemotropic mycoplasmas were detected in any samples. In conclusion, this is the first molecularly confirmed report of bovine and ovine Anaplasma spp. in L. vituli, L. stenopsis and H. suis. The present results suggest that phthirapterosis of domestic animals deserves more attention, and lice should be evaluated among the broad range of potential vectors of arthropod-borne pathogens.  相似文献

Eighteen 4-week-old pigs were used in a study to evaluate tiamulin in drinking water for control of experimentally induced Streptococcus suis type-2 infection. Pigs in groups A and B (n = 6 pigs/group) were aerosolized with a logarithmic-growth phase culture of S suis type 2, whereas pigs in group C (n = 6 pigs) served as noninfected and nonmedicated controls. After exposure to S suis, pigs in group B were given 180 mg of tiamulin/L of drinking water for 5 days. Pigs in group B consumed more feed (P = 0.009) and gained body weight faster (P = 0.02) than did pigs in group A. Pigs in group A had higher rectal temperature (P = 0.05) for up to 7 days after S suis exposure, higher clinical sign scores (P = 0.008), higher serum cortisol concentration on days 7 and 14, higher gross lesion scores (P = 0.03), and higher microscopic lesion scores (P = 0.01) than did pigs in groups B and C. Gross and microscopic lesions in pigs of groups A and B included meningitis, pneumonia, pleuritis, pericarditis, peritonitis, and synovitis of variable severity. Streptococcus suis type 2 was recovered from tissue specimens of 2 group-A pigs and 1 group-B pig. Data indicated that tiamulin administered via drinking water significantly reduced the effects of S suis type-2 infection.  相似文献

Blood samples from sarcoptic mite-infested pigs were evaluated for effects of mite infestation and cold and ambient temperatures on lymphocyte blastogenic responses and for effects of mite infestation on serum cortisol concentrations. In experiment 1, sarcoptic mite-infested and noninfested pigs were housed in cold (5 to 15 C fluctuating) and thermoneural (25 C) environmental chambers for 5 weeks. Differences were not observed (P greater than 0.10) in blastogenic responses to phytohemagglutin or pokeweed mitogen between lymphocytes from infested and noninfested pigs on postinfestation days (PID) 7, 21, 28, and 35 in either environmental chamber. When lymphocytes from noninfested pigs were cultured with sera from infested pigs, alterations of blastogenic responses were not detected. Cortisol values were higher (P less than 0.05) in sera from sarcoptic mite-infested pigs, compared with those from noninfested pigs, at 4 PM on PID 14 and 4 AM and 10 AM on PID 15. Cortisol values were higher (P less than 0.05) in sera obtained at 10 AM on PID 14 and at 10 AM on PID 15 from pigs housed in cold chambers, compared with those from pigs housed in thermoneutral chambers. Interactive effects between sarcoptic mite infestation and cold ambient temperatures were not observed. At 4 AM on PID 15 (experiment 2), cortisol values were higher (P less than 0.05) in sera of infested pigs, compared with those in noninfested pigs. Seemingly, sarcoptic mange in pigs did not alter mitogen-induced lymphocyte blastogenic responses, but did increase serum cortisol concentrations, indicating that sarcoptic mange may be a stressor in pigs.  相似文献

Anthelmintic efficacies of dichlorvos, fenbendazole, and ivermectin were compared in specific-pathogen-free crossbred weanling pigs inoculated with Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis, and Oesophagostomum dentatum. On postinoculation day (PID) 50, 24 pigs in each treatment group were treated orally with 43 mg of dichlorvos/kg of body weight, 3 X 3 mg of fenbendazole/kg, or 300 micrograms of ivermectin/kg, SC. Twenty-four pigs were not treated. On posttreatment day 7 (PID 57), 12 pigs from each treatment group (phase I) were slaughtered, and the anthelmintic efficacy of each treatment was determined. Efficacies against A suum, T suis, and O dentatum, respectively, were: dichlorvos, 100%, 99.9%, and 100%; fenbendazole, 100%, 99.8%, and 100%; and ivermectin, 98.7%, 53.9%, and 87.6%. Weight gains and feed conversions of the remaining pigs were monitored until they reached market weight (phase II). The average weight gains (kg) and feed conversions (kg of feed/kg of gain) at posttreatment day 81 (PID 131), respectively, were: 73.6 and 3.44 for nontreated controls, 78.9 and 3.31 for dichlorvos-treated pigs, 72.1 and 3.36 for fenbendazole-treated pigs, and 74 and 3.48 for ivermectin-treated pigs. Differences in average weight gains and feed conversions were not significant (P greater than 0.05).  相似文献

Immunomodulatory feed additives might offer alternatives to anti-microbial growth promoters in swine production. The present study was conducted to assess the effects of beta-1,3/1,6 glucans, i.e. of specific yeast cell wall components, on immune function and growth performance in pigs. After weaning at 4 weeks of age, 75 piglets were allocated to 3 different groups for 4 weeks, the diet was supplemented with 0, 0.015 or 0.03% of beta-glucan, respectively. All animals were vaccinated against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS). After 4 weeks, average daily gains (ADG) of beta-glucan treated pigs were not different from the controls. Feed intake was tendentiously (p < 0.1) increased at 0.03%beta-glucan, without alteration of feed efficiency. Serum haptoglobin concentrations at the end of the 4 week treatment were increased in all groups when compared to the initial levels (p < 0.001), without differences between the groups (p > 0.05). Haptoglobin levels were inversely related to ADG. Lymphocyte proliferation indices were not different in control and treatment groups. Specific vaccination responses, as quantified by the PRRS antibody titres occurred in all animals, but no relation with beta-glucan feeding was observed. Our results indicate marginal benefits of beta-glucan supplements for growth performance and no effect on the immune parameters tested. The observed trend towards increased feed intake needs further elucidation.  相似文献
