Three experiments were done to determine the influence of supplementary feeding with crushed whole cotton seed and weaning on the productivity of breeding female cattle under range conditions in the Kimberley region, north-western Australia. In the first experiment, supplementary feeding cut losses of breeding cows from 47% to nil, and increased calf turn-off from 18% to 58%, in a sample of cattle from Argyle Downs cattle station during a severe dry season. In the second experiment, weaning calves at 4–6 months of age reduced weight loss in supplemented cows, from 21 to 8% over the last 100 days of the dry season, although the subsequent growth of supplemented weaned calves was inferior to that of non-weaned calves. In the third experiment, weaning of calves had no effect on body weight changes in supplemented cows, although non-weaned calves gained significantly faster than weaned supplemented calves. Control of cattle tick infestation by spraying increased blood haematocrit and haemoglobin values, but had no effect on total plasma proteins. A survey of feral cattle in the Kimberley area showed depressed blood haeboglobin, haematocrit and plasma protein values in breeding cows compared with other classes of cattle.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine monthly changes in body condition scores, body weights and on the prevalence of internal parasites in Nguni, Bonsmara and Angus steers raised on sweetveld. Body condition scores (BCS), body weights (BW), packed cell volume (PCV) and monthly faecal egg counts (FEC) were determined in 25 Nguni, 15 Bonsmara and 15 Angus steers. Nguni and Bonsmara steers maintained their body condition throughout the study, while the Angus lost condition. The Nguni had the highest PCV levels. The PCV levels tended to decline during the rainy season for all the breeds. The FEC were generally low. Fasciola spp. and strongyle eggs were found in 16.3 and 54.6% of the collected faecal samples, respectively. Of the three breeds, Nguni steers had the lowest parasite infestation levels, with the Bonsmara being more susceptible than the other two breeds. Because of the high variability of cattle infestation, selective breeding has been proposed to control three-host ticks in Africa in the same way as it has been implemented to control the one-host tick Boophilus microplus in Australia. Interbreeding (divergent selection experiment) between Gudali zebu cattle was performed at the Wakwa Research Centre, Adamawa, Cameroon to assess the feasibility and impact of such a selective breeding programme. Fifty cows (chosen out of 129) and 2 bulls (chosen out of 10) were selected according to their greater or lesser attractiveness for the tick Amblyomma variegatum, assessed by their infestation degree (ID, ratio between individual animal infestation and mean herd infestation). Half of the animals displayed a high ID (H) and the remainder a low ID (L). The presence of a suckling calf had a significant effect on the infestation of its dam, the udder of lactating cows being significantly less infested (P<0.001) because of a tick removal effect by the calves. Observed infestation data were therefore corrected to allow comparison between lactating and non-lactating cows. The ID of the cows was assessed on five occasions from 1992 to 1994: the consistency of the infestation hierarchy was good overall (P<0.001) despite high variability seen in some animals which would complicate the selection of cattle with low infestation. Four breeding groups were set up (LxL, LxH, HxL, HxH) and 40 calves were born in 1993 and 1994. There was a correlation (P<0.02-0.001) between liveweight (or age) and ID when the younger calves of the groups were 6 months old, but the correlation disappeared by the time the calves were all older than 1 year. There was no difference between the average ID of the calves from the four breeding groups, and no correlation was observed between dam ID and calf ID. The average ID of the 10 calves born of the dams with the lowest ID was however significantly lower than that of the 10 calves born of the dams with the highest ID (0.82 versus 1.15, P=0.03), but the difference was much less than that observed between the dams (0.35 versus 2.30, P=7x10(-9)). A positive correlation between dam ID and calf ID was found when only these 20 cows were taken into consideration (r=0.57, P<0.01). These results indicate that selective breeding of Gudali zebu cattle to produce animals with low infestation by the tick A. variegatum would be uncertain but that a more drastic selection of the breeders than that implemented in the present study may perhaps have some positive impact.  相似文献

Records of 2,449 births and 2,120 weanings of terminal-cross calves were used to characterize maternal productivity of first- and second-generation cows from a diallel of Angus, Brahman, Hereford, Holstein and Jersey when mated to third-breed sires. Third- and later-parity cows were randomly assigned after each parturition to Charolais and Red Poll bulls in multiple-sire pastures. Calves were weaned at approximately 7 mo of age; males were not castrated. A mixed model was assumed for data analysis. Effects included in the model were breed-type of dam, cow within breed-type of dam (random), breed of sire of calf, season of record, year of record, age of dam group, sex of calf and age of calf (covariate). Age of dam groups were 4- and 5-yr-olds, 6- and 7-yr-olds, 8-, 9- and 10-yr-olds, and those greater than 10 yr of age. Dependent variables were calf weight, shoulder width and hip width at birth, weaning weight, weaning height and survival to weaning. Holstein and Holstein crosses tended to produce the largest calves at birth and weaning. Among straightbred dams, the smallest calves were born to Brahman, whereas Hereford weaned the smallest calves. Brahman-Jersey dams produced the smallest calves at birth among crossbreds; Angus-Hereford cows weaned the smallest calves. Average maternal heterosis estimates for birth weight were small and non-significant. Productivity of 3-, 4-, and 5-yr-old crossbred cows containing various proportions (0, 1/4, or 1/2) of Brahman breeding out of Angus or Hereford dams was evaluated using 489 spring-calving and 427 fall-calving records collected over a 4-yr period. Cows were bred to Limousin sires for the first 3 yr and to Limousin and Salers sires the 4th yr. Interactions between crossbred cow group and season of calving were not significant. Percentage of cows exposed to breeding that weaned a calf increased (P less than .01) as proportion Brahman breeding increased, was higher (P less than .01) for cows out of Angus dams than for cows out of Hereford dams, and was higher (P less than .01) for spring-calving cows. As the proportion Brahman increased, the percentage requiring assistance at birth decreased, and cows out of Angus dams required less (P less than .05) assistance than those out of Hereford dams. Preweaning ADG, adjusted weaning weight, weaning conformation, weaning condition, and adjusted weaning hip height increased a proportion Brahman breeding increased. Spring-born calves gained .12 kg/d faster (P less than .01) than fall-born calves. However, weight at weaning was similar for the two groups; spring-born calves were weaned at an average age of 205 d, and fall-born calves were weaned at an average age of 240 d. Fall-calving cows were heavier (P less than .05) than spring-calving cows, and 0 and 1/2 Brahman cows were heavier (P less than .01) than 1/4 Brahman cows. Mature dams representing Hereford, Red Poll, F1 Hereford x Red Poll, F1 Red Poll x Hereford, F1 Angus x Hereford, F1 Angus x Charolais, F1 Brahman x Hereford and F1 Brahman x Angus breed types were evaluated. All cows were bred to Limousin sires to produce two-way or three-way-cross progeny. Mature Brahman x Hereford dams produced a higher (P less than .05) percentage of live calves than Herefords, but dam breed differences in percentage of calves weaned relative to the number of cows exposed for mating were not statistically significant. Progeny of Angus x Charolais and Red Poll dams were outstanding in weaning weight, but Hereford and Brahman-cross calves were below average. Planned comparisons showed that Angus x Charolais calves were heavier (P less than .01) at weaning than Hereford (23.0 +/- 3.8 kg) or Angus x Hereford (9.6 +/- 3.2 kg) progeny. Mature Angus x Hereford mothers weaned heavier calves than did Brahman x Herefords (7.4 +/- 3.2 kg, P less than .05) or Brahman x Angus (10.9 +/- 3.0 kg, P less than .01). OBJECTIVE: To determine effects of breed and oral vitamin E supplementation during late gestation on serum vitamin E and IgG concentrations in beef cows that calved in late winter and late summer and in neonatal calves. ANIMALS: 73 Angus and 43 Hereford primiparous and multiparous cows and their calves. PROCEDURE: Cows in groups that were homogeneous regarding breed and age distribution were randomly allotted to groups that were orally supplemented (n = 59) or not supplemented (57) with vitamin E beginning 30 days prior to onset of 65-day calving seasons. Supplemental vitamin E was provided in a vitamin-mineral mix offered free-choice until parturition. RESULTS: Cows that calved in late winter and were supplemented orally with vitamin E had higher serum vitamin E concentrations at calving and after calving than did unsupplemented cows; differences between groups before calving were not significant. Calves from supplemented multiparous cows had higher vitamin E concentrations than did calves from unsupplemented cows. Winter-born calves from supplemented Hereford cows had heavier 205-day adjusted weaning weights than did winter-born calves from unsupplemented Hereford cows. Supplementation did not affect vitamin E or IgG concentrations in the herd that calved in late summer and did not affect calf growth. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Oral vitamin E supplementation during late gestation may be economically beneficial in certain cow-calf operations in which late-gestation cows are consuming stored forages.  相似文献

Our objective was to evaluate differences in lactation traits and calf weights produced by F1 cows under varying daily metabolizable energy availability. Measures of milk yields and calf weight traits were recorded on mature F1 cows. The cows were produced from matings of Angus or Hereford dams with sires representing Angus/Hereford, Shorthorn, Galloway, Longhorn, Nellore, and Salers breeds. The cows' daily DM intakes of a diet composed of a corn silage or alfalfa silage plus corn silage were recorded from approximately 2 wk postpartum until the calves were weaned at an average age of 170 d. Milk yield measurements were recorded when the calves were approximately 14, 28, 56, 84, 112, 140, and 168 d of age. Sources of variation considered for the traits of interest included sire breed of the cow (SBC) and the covariates weaning age of the calf and daily metabolizable energy intake (DMEI) of the cow for lactation and calf weights. The linear and quadratic effects were evaluated for DMEI. The SBC x DMEI (linear) interaction was significant for total milk yield. Sire breed of cow differences (P < .05) were observed for milk yield at time of peak yield, persistency, preweaning ADG, and weaning weight. Salers- and Shorthorn-sired cows had greater (P < .05) peak yield than Galloway, Longhorn, or Nellore cross-bred cows but were not significantly different from the Hereford/Angus. Increasing DMEI linearly increased peak yield and total yield (P < .05). Preweaning ADG of calves from Nellore-sired cows was greater (P < .05) than all SBC. Preweaning ADG of calves from Galloway-sired cows was less than all SBC (P < .05). The linear effect of DMEI was heterogeneous across SBC for total yield. The pooled quadratic effect of DMEI was significant for all traits except birth weight. The DMEI for expression of maximum weaning weight was estimated to be 29 Mcal. Feed efficiency ratios for the test period were 28, 27, 30, 25, 28, 32, and 30 g calf weight:Mcal DMEI for reference and 1980s Angus/Hereford-, Shorthorn-, Galloway-, Longhorn-, Nellore-, and Salers-sired cows, respectively, at the DMEI level of 29 Mcal.  相似文献

Adult females of the tick Boophilus decoloratus were removed from 6 breeds of cattle on 2 farms in the Northern Transvaal. Highest numbers of female ticks were collected from Simmentaler, followed by Santa Gertrudis, Bonsmara, Afrikaner, Brahman and Nguni. Resistance levels of each breed to B. decoloratus was positively correlated with the amount of Bos indicus genes in the breed, with the exception of Nguni, which is a sanga type but not pure B. indicus.  相似文献

A 2-yr study was conducted to compare the subsequent cow breeding and calf performance of cows that were nonpregnant with cows that were pregnant at the time calves were weaned. Cows were Angus (A), Polled Hereford (PH), Santa Gertrudis (SG) straightbreds and crossbreds of these breeds. Nonpregnant cows (G1) were 4- to 9-yr-olds that had a calf the previous year and appeared to be physically sound with no detection (by rectal palpation) of an abnormal reproductive tract due to disease, abnormal growth or calving difficulties. Pregnant cows (G2) were of similar age and breed composition to G1 cows. The 93 G1 and the 193 G2 cows were assigned within age and breed composition to sire breeding groups on pasture in an approximate 1:2 ratio, respectively, per sire. There were six A, three PH and one SG sires. The year prior to G1 cows being nonpregnant, G1 cows calved 11 d later (P less than .01) than G2 cows. Subsequent to their being nonpregnant, G1 cows gained 27 kg more (P less than .001) weight during the breeding period, had 5.4 percentage units more (P less than .29) calves born, had calves 17 d earlier (P less than .001) in the calving period, had calves that gained at a similar rate to weaning and had calves that were 14 kg heavier (P less than .01) at weaning (due to their being 17 d older) compared with G2 cows and calves.  相似文献

High blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration decreases fertility in ruminants. Nguni cattle are reported to maintain BUN concentration more efficiently than other beef breeds. Our objectives were to determine if BUN concentration differed between Nguni and Hereford cows exposed to a high protein ration, and if breed or BUN and serum protein concentrations at the time of oocyte pick-up affected oocyte quantity, quality, and viability. Twelve Nguni and 10 Hereford cows were randomized into high or normal BUN-inducing diets in a crossover design. Ultrasound-guided oocyte pick-up was performed twice weekly; oocytes were counted, visually graded and the viable oocytes were pooled by treatment and breed for in vitro maturation, fertilization, and culture. Nguni cows on the highest protein ration achieved lower mean BUN concentration than Herefords (P < 0.05), and Nguni cows reached BUN concentrations above 20 mg/dL less frequently than Herefords (P = 0.03). Donor BUN concentration above 20 mg/dL at the time of oocyte pick-up, but not breed, independently decreased the number of good quality oocytes harvested. Increasing weighted mean serum albumin of donor cows was independently associated with the number of oocytes that cleaved by day 2 and that reached morula stage by day 7 (P = 0.01). In conclusion, Nguni cows reached the critical threshold of 20 mg/dL BUN less frequently than Herefords; BUN of donor cows above 20 mg/dL negatively affected visual oocyte quality independent of breed, and increasing serum albumin of donor cows improved viability of bovine oocytes.

Records of Jersey-sired (Jx), Santa Gertrudis-sired (Sx), Charolais-sired (Cx) and straightbred Hereford (H) cows were examined to determine culling rates, birth dates, weaning weights and average daily gains of their first, second and third calves. Culling categories were defined on the basis of number of calves weaned before removal from the herd. Calf performance data were analyzed by cow breed group and cow culling category. A second-degree polynomial model fit the data of all breeds, and accounted for a greater proportion of variation in percentage culled than did the linear model (P less than .05). Total percentage culled through the study were 71, 67, 54 and 53 for the H, Sx, Cx and Jx cows, respectively. Culling rates in the H and Sx cows tended to be higher at earlier ages than in the Cx and Jx cows. Cow-culling category was a significant source of variation only on birth date of first calves. Cows culled after one calf had calves that were born later than cows in the other two categories (P less than .05). Birth date, weaning weight and average daily gain of first calves varied with cow breed in that Jx cows had calves that were born earlier, gained faster and weaned heavier than first calves from the other breed groups (P less than .05). Cow size, reproductive traits and calf performance through weaning were evaluated in a range environment for Simmental (S) x Hereford (H) and Angus (A) x H crosses in two-breed rotations and straightbred H. Data were grouped into seven dam breed categories: straightbred Hereford (H), crossbred F1 S x H cows (SH), S x H cows of low percentage H (SHS), S x H cows of high percentage H (HSH), F1 A x H cows (AH), A x H cows of low percentage H (AHA) and A x H cows of high percentage H (HAH). Straightbred H, SH, AH, SHS and AHA cows were mated to H bulls, HSH cows were mated to S bulls and HAH cows were mated to A bulls. Cows in the SHS and AHA groups ranged from 1/4 to 3/8 H and their calves from 5/8 to 11/16 H. Cows within the HSH and HAH groups ranged from 5/8 to 3/4 H and their calves from 5/16 to 3/8 H. Cow age ranged from 3 to 10 yr. Simmental-cross cows were heavier and taller and produced heavier calves at birth and weaning than A-cross. Pregnancy rate, calf birth date and percentage of difficult births did not vary significantly among dam breed groups. Productivity of 2-yr-old crossbred cows containing various proportions (0, 1/4 or 1/2) of Brahman breeding was evaluated using 203 spring-calving and 171 fall-calving heifers over a 3-yr period. All heifers were mated to Limousin sires. Percentage of cows exposed to breeding that weaned a calf was the only trait for which a significant crossbred cow group x season of calving interaction was found. Preweaning ADG and age-adjusted weaning weight increased as proportion Brahman breeding increased. Age-adjusted weaning weight was similar for the two groups because spring-born calves were weaned at an average age of 205 d and fall-born calves were weaned at an average age of 240 d. For weaning condition scores, an interaction between dam breed and proportion Brahman was detected; scores tended to be greater for calves out of 1/2 Hereford dams than for those out of 1/2 Angus dams, and this difference increased as proportion Brahman increased. Weaning conformation scores were similar for all calves. Age-adjusted weaning hip height increased as proportion Brahman breeding increased. Based on numbers of weaned calves, spring calving was more advantageous than fall calving. A total of 438 calves was produced by 123 sires of Hereford, Simmental, Friesian and Brahman breeds when mated to Hereford cows. Faecal egg counts and larval differentiation of nematode species were undertaken on one or two occasions prior to weaning at 7 to 8 months. Significant breed of sire and sire within breed effects were observed, but heritabilities, repeatabilities and phenotypic correlations were generally low to moderate.  相似文献

Data from cows of a five-breed diallel involving Angus, Brahman, Hereford, Holstein and Jersey were analyzed. Females were used in inter se matings to produce three second-generation parturitions per cow. Crossbred (CB) cows were 43 d younger (P less than .05), 14 kg heavier (P less than .05) and 2 cm taller (P less than .05) at first calving than straightbred (SB) cows; however, no differences were detected (P greater than .10) between the two groups for pelvic measurements. Although large differences among breed types existed for gestation length, crossbreds generally did not differ from straightbreds for this character. Crossbred cows exhibited a 7.5 d shorter (P less than .05) interval from parturition to first service, but did not exhibit a shorter interval from parturition to conception (P greater than .10). The dairy breeds (Holstein and Jersey) and their crosses exhibited similar postpartum and calving intervals as Angus, while Brahman and their crosses had longer intervals. Crossbred calves were 1.3 kg heavier (P less than .01) and had greater (P less than .01) shoulder and hip dimensions at birth than SB calves, but no difference in the amount of calving difficulty was detected (P greater than .10) between the two groups. Higher (P less than .01) rates of survival to 24 h (3.7%) and to weaning (8.7%) were observed for CB calves compared with SB calves. Heterotic effects for weaning weight (15.2 kg), weaning height (2 cm) and preweaning average daily gain (68 g) were large and illustrate the importance of individual and maternal heterosis for these characters. These results suggest that substantial amounts of heterosis may be retained for survival and weaning characters of calves in early generations of inter se mating of CB.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of weaning in small yards, with or without a feed bunk training procedure, on the subsequent behaviour and performance of Bos taurus steers in a feedlot. A reduction in the incidence of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) was the primary objective. In each experiment, about 200 male beef calves (Angus × Hereford and Hereford) were separated from their mothers at 7–9 months of age and allocated to one of three matched weaning treatment groups. The treatments were (1) yard weaning with hay or silage, (2) yard weaning with hay or silage plus a novel handling procedure to train the animals to be able to find a grain ration in a trough, and (3) paddock weaning without supplement or handling according to common industry practice in southeastern Australia. Paddock weaning is the practice of abrupt separation of cows and calves followed by return to separate pasture paddocks, whereas yard weaning involves abrupt separation but the calves remain in the yards for several days. Experimental vaccines against the major BRD pathogens were given to half of each group 1–2 months prior to entry into a commercial feedlot. The yard weaned and yard trained cattle had a significantly greater weight gain in the first month and over the 90-day feeding period than the paddock weaned control groups. There was no difference between the groups in pre-feedlot weight gain. The yard trained groups showed greater feeding activity during the first few days in the feedlot, but were not significantly different in weight gain from yard weaned. The vaccination treatment also significantly improved the weight gain in the first month and over 80 days. The combination of yard weaning and vaccination produced the highest weight gains overall. There was consistently less morbidity in the yard weaned groups compared to paddock weaned controls. The morbidity in yard trained groups was intermediate between these two. Weaning in small yards and the appropriate use of effective BRD vaccines 1–2 months before feedlot entry are recommended for B. taurus feeder steers in southeastern Australia to minimise sickness and improve productivity in the feedlot. Associated benefits are reduced risks of antibiotic residues and of animal welfare problems.  相似文献

Birth, weaning, feedlot and carcass traits were evaluated on 1,181 calves sired by Charolais and Limousin bulls out of eight crossbred dam groups (Hereford X Angus, Angus X Hereford, Simmental X Angus, Simmental X Hereford, Brown Swiss X Angus, Brown Swiss X Hereford, Jersey X Angus, Jersey X Hereford). Calves were born in the spring over a 4-yr period during which dams ranged from 3 to 8 yr of age. Charolais-cross calves were 2.7 kg heavier (P less than .01) at birth and had a 9.9% higher (P less than .01) incidence of difficult calvings and 4.6% greater (P less than .05) preweaning death loss than did Limousin crosses. Charolais-sired calves out-gained Limousin-sired calves by 31 g/d (P less than .01) from birth to weaning and were 9 kg heavier (P less than .01) at weaning. After weaning, calves were self-fed a finishing diet and slaughtered as each animal attained an estimated carcass grade of low Choice. Charolais-cross calves gained 60 g/d faster (P less than .01) than Limousin crosses, were fed 6.8 fewer d and were 17.3 kg heavier (P less than .01) at slaughter. Feed efficiency was similar for both sire breeds. On a grade-equivalent basis, Charolais crosses produced 7 kg heavier (P less than .01) carcass and had 22 g more carcass weight per day of age (P less than .01). Charolais crosses had slightly less internal and external fat. Dressing percentage was higher for Limousin cross calves (64.6 vs 63.9%, P less than .01). Maternal performance of 134 Hereford (H), Brangus (B), and reciprocal crossbred (H x B and B x H) cows from 2 to 7 yr of age was evaluated under semidesert conditions in this study. Calves produced by 2- and 3-yr-old cows were sired by Brangus and Hereford bulls. Calves produced by 4- to 7-yr-old cows were sired by Charolais bulls. Breed of sire and breed of dam of cow affected kilograms of weaning weight, 205-d weight, weaning weight as a percentage of cow weight, and 205-d weight as a percentage of cow weight produced annually. Brangus (either as sire or dam of cow) was superior to Hereford in all cases. Observed maternal heterosis on 2- to 3-yr-old cows was 23.0, 20.1, 30.0, 29.1, 23.9, and 23.0% for calf birth date, weaning percentage, weaning weight per year, 205-d weight per year, weaning weight as a percentage of cow weight per year, and 205-d weight as a percentage of cow weight per year, respectively (P less than .01). Observed maternal heterosis from mature cows was 19.8, 12.8, 21.0, 18.7, 17.4, and 15.4% for calf birth date, weaning percentage, weaning weight per year, 205-d weight per year, weaning weight as a percentage of cow weight per year, and 205-d weight as a percentage of cow weight per year, respectively (P less than .01). Results indicate large heterotic effects on annual cow productivity and an adaptive advantage for cows with Brangus sires and(or) dams under semidesert conditions.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to characterize breeds representing diverse biological types for birth and weaning traits in crossbred cattle (Bos taurus). Gestation length, calving difficulty, percentage of unassisted calving, percentage of perinatal survival, percentage of survival from birth to weaning, birth weight, weaning weight, BW at 205 d, and ADG was measured in 1,370 calves born and 1,285 calves weaned. Calves were obtained by mating Hereford, Angus, and MARC III (1/4 Hereford, 1/4 Angus, 1/4 Pinzgauer, and 1/4 Red Poll) mature cows to Hereford or Angus (British breeds), Norwegian Red, Swedish Red and White, Wagyu, and Friesian sires. Calves were born during the spring of 1997 and 1998. Sire breed was significant for gestation length, birth weight, BW at 205 d, and ADG (P < 0.001). Offspring from Swedish Red and White and Friesian had the shortest gestation length (282 d), whereas offspring from Wagyu sires had the longest gestation length (286 d). Progeny from British breeds were the heaviest at birth (40.5 kg) and at 205 d (237 kg), and grew faster (0.97 kg/d) than offspring from other breeds. Offspring from Wagyu sires were the lightest at birth (36.3 kg) and at 205 d (214 kg), and had the slowest growth (0.91 kg/d). Dam breed was significant for gestation length (P < 0.001), birth weight (P = 0.009), BW at 205 d, and ADG (P < 0.001). Offspring from Hereford cows had the longest gestation length (284 d), whereas offspring from Angus cows had the shortest (282 d). Offspring from MARC III cows were the heaviest at birth (39.4 kg) when compared with offspring from Hereford (38.2 kg) and Angus (38.6 kg) cows. Progeny from Angus cows were the heaviest at 205 d (235 kg) and grew faster (0.96 kg/d), whereas offspring from Hereford cows were the lightest at 205 d (219 kg) and were the slowest in growth (0.88 kg/d). Sex was significant for gestation length (P = 0.026), birth weight, BW at 205 d, and ADG (P < 0.001). Male calves had a longer gestation length (284 d) when compared with female calves (283 d). Males were heavier than females at birth and at 205 d, and grew faster. Sire breed effects can be optimized by selection and use of appropriate crossbreeding systems.  相似文献
