The effects of two levels of concentrate and ruminally undegradable protein (RUP) on performance, intake, digestibility, carcass
characteristics, meat quality traits, and commercial cuts yield were assessed. Twenty crossbred heifers (240 kg average body
weight) were used. At the beginning of the trial, four animals were slaughtered as reference group and the 16 remaining animals
were randomly assigned to four treatments, in a 2 × 2 factorial design: two levels of concentrate (40% and 80%, dry matter
(DM) basis) and two levels of RUP (48.79% and 27.19% of CP). At the end of the trial, all the animals were slaughtered. There
was no interaction ( P > 0.05) between concentrate and RUP levels. Dry matter intake and nutrients digestibility was not affected ( P > 0.05) by RUP level. Heifers fed the highest RUP level had greater ( P < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG). Concentrate level did not affect ( P > 0.05) DMI and ADG. Heifers fed diets with 80% concentrate had greater intake of TDN and EE, and lower intake of NDF ( P < 0.05). The digestibilities of all nutrients, except the NDF, were greater ( P < 0.05) for the 80% concentrate diets. The RUP levels did not affect ( P > 0.05) the carcass characteristics and carcass gain composition. Heifers fed 80% concentrate diets had larger ( P < 0.05) longissimus muscle area and lower gain of bones ( P < 0.05). Concentrate level did not affect ( P > 0.05) the composition of carcass gain. There was no effect ( P > 0.05) of RUP and concentrate levels on meat quality traits and commercial cut yields. 相似文献

The effect of implants of estradiol on initiation of ovarian cycles postpartum was studied in 201 anestrous beef cows. Cows from four farms were used over a 2-yr period in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement of treatments with estradiol implants and stage postpartum as main effects. Cows were assigned at random within date of calving within farm to receive an ear implant containing estradiol-17 beta (24 mg) for 21 d or to serve as controls. Stages postpartum at implantation were divided into less than or equal to 25, 26 to 39, and greater than or equal to 40 d, three stages that should reflect potential changes in hypothalmic-hypophysial sensitivity to estradiol. Blood samples for determination of progesterone were obtained and rectal examinations of the ovaries performed at implant insertion, 14 d after insertion, at implant removal (d 21), and 14 d after removal (d 35) to assess ovulatory response to treatment. Circulating concentrations of estradiol on d 14 of treatment averaged 3.2 +/- 1.0 and 23.1 +/- 4.7 pg/ml for control and estradiol-treated cows, respectively. Compared with control cows, treatment with estradiol initiated after d 26 postpartum increased the proportion of cows that ovulated during the experimental period. No differences were seen in the average days postpartum when cows were first determined to have ovulated. 相似文献

Ovarian and gonadotropin responses to insulin and energy restriction were investigated in a 2 X 2 factorial experiment using 2-yr-old Brangus heifers. Thirty heifers were paired by weight and body condition, then assigned to treatment groups receiving 75 (LE) or 180% (HE) of NRC recommendations for dietary energy for maintenance. Diets were adjusted weekly to maintain daily .25 to .5 kg weight loss or 0 to .25 kg weight gain, respectively. On d 10 of the first estrous cycle subsequent to the initial 45 d of feeding, heifers within each dietary group were allocated to receive twice daily infusions of either 40 U insulin (I) or saline (C). Infusions began at 5 and 10 h postprandial and were given in six boluses, 20 min apart. Infusions continued daily until d 20 or estrus, whichever occurred first. On d 11, blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals for 12 h to determine luteinizing hormone (LH) and insulin concentrations. On d 16 to 20, twice daily im injections of 1 mg follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were administered. Heifers were ovariectomized on d 11 after estrus. Number of corpora lutea (CL) in LE-I heifers was greater (P less than .05) in LE-C, HE-C or HE-I. Total CL weight (g) per heifer was greater (P less than .05) in HE-C and LE-I heifers than in LE-C. Individual CL wt was heavier in HE than in LE heifers (P less than .05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The objective was to test the efficacy of an intravaginal progesterone insert and injection of PGF2alpha for synchronizing estrus and shortening the interval to pregnancy in cattle. Cattle were assigned to one of three treatments before a 31-d breeding period that employed artificial insemination. Control cattle were not treated, and treated cattle were administered PGF2alpha or an intravaginal progesterone-releasing insert (CIDR) for 7 d and treated with PGF2alpha on d 6. The treatments were applied in one of three experiments that involved postpartum beef cows (Exp. 1; n = 851; 56+/-0.6 d postpartum), beef heifers (Exp. 2; n = 724; 442.5+/-2.8 d of age), and dairy heifers (Exp. 3; n = 260; 443.2+/-4.5 d of age). Luteal activity before treatment was determined for individual cattle based on blood progesterone concentrations. In Exp. 1, there was a greater incidence of estrus during the first 3 d of the breeding period in CIDR+PGF2alpha-treated cows compared with PGF2alpha-treated or control cows (15, 33, and 59% for control, PGF2alpha, and CIDR+PGF2alpha, respectively; P < 0.001). The improved estrous response led to an increase in pregnancy rate during the 3-d period (7, 22, and 36% for control, PGF2alpha, and CIDR+PGF2alpha, respectively; P < 0.001) and tended to improve pregnancy rate for the 31-d breeding period for cows treated with CIDR+PGF2alpha, (50, 55, and 58% for control, PGF2alpha, and CIDR+PGF2alpha, respectively, P = 0.10). Improvements in rates of estrus and pregnancy after CIDR+PGF2alpha, were also observed in beef heifers. Presence of luteal activity before the treatment period affected synchronization and pregnancy rates because anestrous cows (Exp. 1) or prepubertal heifers (Exp. 2) had lesser synchronization rates and pregnancy rates during the first 3 d of the breeding period as well as during the entire 31-d breeding period. The PGF2alpha, and CIDR+PGF2alpha but not the control treatments were evaluated in dairy heifers (Exp. 3). The CIDR+PGF2alpha-treated heifers had a greater incidence of estrus (84%) during the first 3 d of the breeding period compared with the PGF2alpha-treated heifers (57%), but pregnancy rates during the first 3 d or during the 31-d breeding period were not improved for CIDR+PGF2alpha compared with PGF2alpha-treated heifers. In summary, the concurrent treatment of CIDR and PGF2alpha improved synchronization rates relative to PGF2alpha alone or control. Improved estrus synchrony led to greater pregnancy rates for beef cows and beef heifers but failed to improve pregnancy rates for dairy heifers. 相似文献

Two experiments were designed to investigate the administration of intravaginal progesterone in protocols for oestrus and ovulation synchronization in beef heifers. In Experiment 1, cyclic Black Angus heifers (n = 20) received an Ovsynch protocol and were randomly assigned to receive (CIDR‐Ovsynch) or not (Ovsynch) a progesterone device between Days 0 and 7. Treatment with a controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device significantly increased the size of the dominant follicle prior to ovulation (12.8 ± 0.4 CIDR‐Ovsynch vs 11.4 ± 0.4 Ovsynch) (p < 0.02). Plasma progesterone concentrations throughout the experiment were affected by the interaction between group and day effects (p < 0.004). In Experiment 2, cyclic Polled Hereford heifers (n = 382) were randomly assigned to one of the six treatment groups (3 × 2 factorial design) to receive a CIDR, a used bovine intravaginal device (DIB), or a medroxiprogesterone acetate (MAP) sponge and GnRH analogues (lecirelin or buserelin). All heifers received oestradiol benzoate plus one of the devices on Day 0 and PGF on Day 7 pm (device withdrawal). Heifers were detected in oestrus 36 h after PGF and inseminated 8–12 h later, while the remainder received GnRH 48 h after PGF and were inseminated on Day 10 (60 h). The number of heifers detected in oestrus on Day 8 and conception rate to AI on Day 9 were higher (p < 0.01) in the used‐DIB than in the CIDR or MAP groups, while the opposite occurred with the pregnancy rate to FTAI on Day 10 (p < 0.01). There was no effect of progesterone source, GnRH analogue or their interaction on overall pregnancy rates (64.9%). Progesterone treatment of heifers during an Ovsynch protocol resulted in a larger pre‐ovulatory follicle in beef heifers. Progesterone content of intravaginal devices in synchronization protocols is important for the timing of AI, as the use of low‐progesterone devices can shorten the interval to oestrus. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the production, consumption, and energy balance parameters of primiparous 3/4 and 7/8 Holstein × Gir (HG) dairy cows fed two diets of differing energy levels during the postpartum period. At the beginning of the study, 28 days prepartum, the average weight of both genetic groups was 498?±?12 kg and body condition score (BCS) was 3.5?±?0.05. At the end of the study, 61 days postpartum, the 3/4 HG cows had higher weight and body condition scores than the 7/8 HG (456?±?8 and 429?±?8 kg and 3.13?±?0.03 and 2.94?±?0.03 BCS for 3/4 HG and 7/8 HG, respectively). Milk from cows fed the high-energy diet had higher percentages of fat, protein, lactose, and total dry extract than cows fed the low-energy diet. Cows fed the high-energy diet had higher net energy intake (95.3?±?1.9 vs. 88.1?±?2.1 MJ/day) and higher energy balance (3.64?±?2.13 vs ??6.02?±?2.30 MJ/day). The 3/4 HG cows displayed higher energy for maintenance (33.1?±?0.4 MJ/day) than the 7/8 HG (31.5?±?0.5 MJ /day). In conclusion, although the primiparous 3/4 HG were heavier than the 7/8 HG and had a higher body condition score, no differences in milk produced up to 60 days postpartum were observed. The higher energy diet during the postpartum period increased energy balance, resulting in higher production of milk fat, protein, and lactose. 相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine if feeding melatonin alters plasma concentrations of melatonin, growth and carcass composition of postpubertal beef heifers exposed to 16 h light (L):8 h dark (D). In Exp. 1, 16 heifers were blocked by initial body weight (318 +/- 5.6 kg). Four heifers were killed before starting the melatonin treatment to obtain initial carcass composition. Six heifers received vehicle (95% ethanol) and six were fed melatonin (4 mg/100 kg body weight) daily for 58 d at 1330 to coincide with the middle of the 16-h light period. On d 59 heifers were slaughtered. Melatonin feeding increased the percentage of fat in rib (P less than .05) and longissimus muscle (LD; P less than .10) and carcass fat accretion 28% (P less than .09) but reduced the percentage of protein 8% in rib (P less than .05) and carcass protein accretion 30% (P less than .09). Other measures in the carcass and body weight gain were not affected (P greater than .10) by feeding melatonin. Plasma concentrations of melatonin increased (P less than .01) from 10 to 140 pg/ml within 30 min of feeding melatonin. In Exp. 2, 24 heifers were blocked by initial body weight (348 +/- 13.7 kg). Eight heifers were killed initially, eight received vehicle and eight were fed melatonin for 63 d as described in Exp. 1. Melatonin did not influence (P greater than .10) body weight gain or any measure in the carcass; however, these heifers were fatter (40.1%) than those in Exp. 1 (30.9%) at the beginning of the experiment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in consecutive years to determine the effects of prepartum nutrient level and postpartum ruminally undegraded protein intake on nutrient status, milk production, subsequent calf production, and reproductive performance of 126 crossbred, primiparous beef heifers. Prepartum treatments were low nutrient intake (LN) (approximately 2.5 kg of TDN, .5 kg of CP animal-1.d-1 and maintenance nutrient intake (MN) (5 kg of TDN, 1 kg of CP animal-1.d-1), which were fed for 75 d before parturition. Two postpartum protein supplements were formulated to provide 250 g/d of ruminally degradable protein (RD) and one to supply ruminally undegraded protein (UD) at 250 g/d of additional UD CP compared to the RD supplement. Cholesterol was lower (P less than .01) in heifers given UD than in heifers given RD. Blood urea nitrogen was higher (P less than .01) for UD-fed heifers than for RD-fed heifers and was higher in LN heifers (P less than .06) than in MN heifers. Milk production did not differ (P greater than .11) as a result of LN, MN, UD, or RD. Postpartum cow weight gain was greatest (P less than .01) for UD and LN heifers. The percentage of heifers bred during the first estrous cycle of the breeding season was greater (P less than .02) for UD than for RD. Overall, prepartum nutrition did not interact with postpartum protein supplement, nor did it have any effect on postpartum interval, whereas UD increased cow weight gain postpartum and reduced postpartum interval. 相似文献

Data are presented on the effects of a short-term progesterone treatment for oestrous cycle control in cattle. Progesterone was administered by intravaginal sponge pessaries inserted for a 10-day period. Progesterone pessaries alone did not affect oestrous cycle length or corpus luteum function at either early (day 2) or midluteal (day 12) cycle stages. However, when progesterone (250 mg) and oestradiol benzoate (7-5 mg) were given intramuscularly on the day of pessary insertion corpus luteum development was inhibited in animals treated at day 2 and was regressed in animals at day 12. This combined oestrogen-progesterone treatment efficiently controlled oestrous cycle length. 相似文献

An experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of the side of ovulation with respect to the previously gravid uterine horn on fertility of cows inseminated at one of two periods postpartum. All cows were treated with an intravaginal progesterone insert for 7 d and received estradiol benzoate (2 mg, i.m.) at the time of device insertion, prostaglandin F2alpha (25 mg, i.m.) at the time of device removal, and estradiol benzoate (1 mg, i.m.) 30 h after device removal. All cows were inseminated 28 to 30 h after the second treatment with estradiol benzoate, regardless of observed estrus. Cows treated in Period 1 received inserts at 16 to 20 d postpartum and were inseminated at 25 to 29 d postpartum. Cows treated in Period 2 received inserts at 26 to 30 d postpartum and were inseminated at 35 to 39 d postpartum. Diameter of the largest follicle at insert removal was greater in cows treated in Period 2 (10.1 +/- 0.3; mm +/- SEM) than in cows treated in Period 1 (9.1 +/- 0.3; P < .05). Diameter did not differ with the side of ovulation in respect to the previously gravid uterine horn. Diameter was greater in cows 5 to 9 (10.3 +/- 0.3) than in cows 3 to 4 (9.0 +/- 0.3) or 10 to 13 (9.4 +/- 0.6) yr of age (P < .01). The proportion of cows that ovulated from the ovary contralateral to the previously gravid uterine horn was greater (P < .05) than of those that ovulated from the ipsilateral ovary, and the incidence of ovulation was reduced in cows 3 to 4 yr of age (P < .01). Conception rate tended to be greater for ovulation from the ipsilateral compared with the contralateral ovary, relative to the previously gravid uterine horn (P < .10) and for ovulation from the right than the left ovary (P < .06). Conception rate was less if cows ovulated a follicle that was < 9 mm than a follicle > or = 9 mm in diameter at insert removal (P < .01) and was greater in cows inseminated in June than in April or May (P < .05). In conclusion, in cows in which estrus was synchronized at 25 to 39 d postpartum, ovulation from either the ovary ipsilateral to the previously gravid uterine horn, or the right ovary, tended to increase fertility. 相似文献

Forty-six beef heifers (16 to 23 mo) of two biological types (small = Red Poll-sired, large = Charolais-sired) were individually fed from d 90 of gestation through parturition to evaluate the effects of nutritional restriction on plasma LH and steroid hormone concentrations. Heifers were allotted to one of two nutritional treatments to achieve a BW reduction (loss, fed at 1% of BW/d) or to maintain initial BW (maintenance, fed 1.5% of BW/d) to parturition. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (100 micrograms) was injected i.m. three times during gestation (d 130; d 200; d 270) and twice after parturition (d 1 to 14; d 23 to 36). Blood samples were collected at 20-min intervals after GnRH for 4 h. Maternal BW change from d 90 to parturition differed (P less than .01) between loss and maintenance heifers. Mean plasma progesterone concentrations were greater (P less than .05) at d 130 and 270 of gestation in small than in large heifers and were greater (P less than .01) at d 23 to 36 postpartum in maintenance than in loss heifers. Mean concentrations of estrone and estradiol were greater (P less than .05) in large than in small heifers at d 200 of gestation. Mean plasma LH concentrations following GnRH injection were greater (P less than .01) in loss than in maintenance heifers at 200 and 270 d of gestation. Metabolizable and retained energy were related inversely to LH release during mid and late gestation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献
