Complications of renal biopsies are well documented except for the change in renal function after a biopsy. Eighteen healthy, adult cats were divided into two groups (n = 9 cats/group). For the measurement of global and split renal function, Group 1 used the renal uptake of 99mTc-DTPA and Group 2 used the renal uptake of 99mTc-MAG3. Scintigraphic data were collected on days (-4), (-3), 0, 1, 2, and 4 post renal biopsy. Using ultrasound guidance, biopsies were taken from the right renal cortex on dO, before acquiring scintigraphic images. P - values less than 0.10 were considered significant due to the limited number of observations. The only statistically significant change (p = 0.08) in global renal function detected was by day following a unilateral renal biopsy. Cats imaged using 99mTc-MAG3 had discernible liver activity. A unilateral, ultrasound guided renal biopsy has minimal effect on renal function in normal, healthy sedated cats. 相似文献

Diagnosing right-to-left congenital cardiac shunts can be difficult. Cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography represent the traditional gold standard for diagnosis, but they are invasive. Nuclear scintigraphy using 99mTc-macroaggregated albumin (MAA) has been employed in humans as an alternate method of diagnosis. This study reviews eight dogs presented for evaluation of a suspect right-to-left cardiac shunt that were examined using 99mTc-MAA. In all, 2-4 mCi (74-148 MBq) of reduced particle 99mTc-MAA were injected IV in a cephalic vein and static images of the whole body, including right and left lateral, dorsal, and ventral views, were acquired for 60 s and stored into a 256 x 256 x 16 matrix. Shunt fractions were calculated. One dog with radiopharmaceutical distribution limited to the lungs did not have a shunt. Seven dogs had distribution of the radiopharmaceutical outside the pulmonary capillary bed, indicating bypassing of the pulmonary capillary circulation due to a right-to-left shunt. Four dogs had 99mTc-MAA within the brain. Three dogs that did not have brain uptake, but instead had a sharp cutoff of radioactivity at the level of the front limbs and neck, were diagnosed with reverse patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). The asymmetric distribution of the radiopharmaceutical is due to the location of the shunt, distal to the brachiocephalic trunk and left subclavian artery. Shunt fractions of dogs with extrapulmonary radioactivity ranged from 40% to 59%. Nuclear scintigraphy with 99mTc-MAA is a quick alternative method of diagnosing right-to-left cardiac shunts that permits quantification of shunt fraction. Distinguishing between reverse PDA and other right-to-left shunts may be possible based on the radiopharmaceutical distribution. 相似文献

Contrast‐enhanced ultrasound may be helpful for detecting early renal microvascular damage and dysfunction in dogs. However, before this noninvasive imaging method can be tested as an early‐stage screening tool in clinical patients, an improved understanding of long‐term variation in healthy animals is needed. In this prospective, secondary, longitudinal, serial measurements study, variability of contrast‐enhanced ultrasound renal perfusion parameters was described for eight healthy dogs, using seven time points and a period of 83 weeks. Dogs were sedated with butorphanol (0.4 mg/kg), and contrast‐enhanced ultrasound of each kidney was performed after an intravenous bolus injection of a microbubble contrast agent (0.04 mL/kg). Time‐intensity curves were created from regions‐of‐interest drawn in the renal cortex and medulla. Intensity‐related parameters representing blood volume and time‐related parameters representing blood velocity were determined. A random‐effects model using restricted maximum likelihood was used to estimate variance components. Within‐dog coefficient of variation was defined as the ratio of the standard deviation over the mean. Time‐related parameters such as time‐to‐peak, rise and fall time had lowest within‐dog variability. Intensity‐related parameters such as peak enhancement, wash‐in and wash‐out area under the curve, total area under the curve, and wash‐in and washout rates had high within‐dog variability (coefficient of variation > 45%). Authors therefore recommend the use of time‐related parameters for future studies of renal perfusion. Within‐dog variability for bilateral kidney measurements was extremely low, therefore contrast‐enhanced ultrasound may be particularly useful for detecting unilateral changes in renal perfusion. Future studies are needed to compare contrast‐enhanced ultrasound findings in healthy dogs versus dogs with renal disease. 相似文献

Objective
To compare the effects of thiopentone, propofol and alfaxalone on arytenoid cartilage motion and establish the dose rates to achieve a consistent oral laryngoscopy examination.Study design
Randomised crossover study.Animals
Six healthy adult Beagle dogs.Methods
Each dog was randomly administered three induction agents with a 1-week washout period between treatments. Thiopentone (7.5 mg kg?1), propofol (3 mg kg?1) or alfaxalone (1.5 mg kg?1) was administered over 1 minute for induction of anaesthesia. If the dog was deemed inadequately anaesthetised, then supplemental boluses of 1.8, 0.75 and 0.4 mg kg?1 were administered, respectively. Continual examination of the larynx, using a laryngoscope, commenced once an adequate anaesthetic depth was reached until examination end point. The number of arytenoid motions and vital breaths were counted during three time periods and compared over time and among treatments. Data were analysed using Friedman and Mann–Whitney U tests, Spearman rho and a linear mixed model with post hoc pairwise comparison with Tukey correction. Results
The median (range) induction and examination times were 2.8 (2.0–3.0), 2.7 (2.0–3.3) and 2.5 (1.7–3.3) minutes (p = 0.727); and 14.1 (8.0–41.8), 5.4 (3.3–14.8) and 8.5 (3.8–31.6) minutes (p = 0.016) for thiopentone, propofol and alfaxalone, respectively. The median dose rates required to achieve an adequate anaesthetic depth were 6.3 (6.0–6.6), 2.4 (2.4–2.4) and 1.2 (1.2–1.2) mg kg?1 minute?1, respectively. There was no significant difference for the total number of arytenoid motions (p = 0.662) or vital breaths (p = 0.789) among induction agents. Conclusion and clinical relevance
The number of arytenoid motions were similar among the induction agents. However, at the dose rates used in this study, propofol provided adequate conditions for evaluation of the larynx with a shorter examination time which may be advantageous during laryngoscopy in dogs. 相似文献7.

ObjectiveTo determine the effects of intravenous (IV) premedication with acepromazine, butorphanol or their combination, on the propofol anesthetic induction dosage in dogs.Study designProspective, blinded, Latin square design.AnimalsA total of three male and three female, healthy Beagle dogs, aged 3.79 ± 0.02 years, weighing 10.6 ± 1.1 kg, mean ± standard deviation.MethodsEach dog was assigned to one of six IV treatments weekly: 0.9% saline (treatment SAL), low-dose acepromazine (0.02 mg kg–1; treatment LDA), high-dose acepromazine (0.04 mg kg–1; treatment HDA), low-dose butorphanol (0.2 mg kg–1; treatment LDB), high-dose butorphanol (0.4 mg kg–1; treatment HDB); and a combination of acepromazine (0.02 mg kg–1) with butorphanol (0.2 mg kg–1; treatment ABC). Physiologic variables and sedation scores were collected at baseline and 10 minutes after premedication. Then propofol was administered at 1 mg kg–1 IV over 15 seconds, followed by boluses (0.5 mg kg–1 over 5 seconds) every 15 seconds until intubation. Propofol dose, physiologic variables, recovery time, recovery score and adverse effects were monitored and recorded. Data were analyzed using mixed-effects anova (p < 0.05).ResultsPropofol dosage was lower in all treatments than in treatment SAL (4.4 ± 0.5 mg kg–1); the largest decrease was recorded in treatment ABC (1.7 ± 0.3 mg kg–1). Post induction mean arterial pressures (MAPs) were lower than baseline values of treatments LDA, HDA and ABC. Apnea and hypotension (MAP < 60 mmHg) developed in some dogs in all treatments with the greatest incidence of hypotension in treatment ABC (4/6 dogs). Conclusions and clinical relevanceAlthough the largest decrease in propofol dosage required for intubation was after IV premedication with acepromazine and butorphanol, hypotension and apnea still occurred. 相似文献

In order to evaluate the potential prebiotic effects of cellobiose, 10 healthy adult research beagle dogs received a complete diet containing 0, 0.5 and 1 g cellobiose/kg bodyweight (BW)/day. At the end of each feeding period, faeces, urine and blood of the dogs were collected. The results demonstrated a significant increase of faecal lactate concentrations, indicating a bacterial fermentation of cellobiose in the canine intestine. Along with this, a dose-dependent linear increase of the relative abundance of Lactobacillaceae in the faeces of the dogs was observed (p = 0.014). In addition, a dose-dependent increase (p < 0.05) of Alloprevotella, Bacteroides and Prevotella, and a linear decrease for unidentified Lachnospiraceae (p = 0.011) was observed when cellobiose was added to the diet, although the relative abundance of these genera was low (<1%) among all groups. The faecal pH was not affected by dietary cellobiose. Cellobiose seemed to modulate the excretion of nitrogen metabolites, as lower concentrations of phenol (p = 0.034) and 4-ethylphenol (p = 0.002) in the plasma of the dogs were measured during the supplementation periods. Urinary phenols and indoles, however, were not affected by the dietary supplementation of cellobiose. In conclusion, cellobiose seems to be fermented by the intestinal microbiota of dogs. Although no effect on the faecal pH was detected, the observed increase of microbial lactate production might lower the pH in the large intestine and consecutively modulate the intestinal absorption of nitrogen metabolites. Also, the observed changes of some bacterial genera might have been mediated by increased intestinal lactate concentrations or a higher relative abundance of lactobacilli. Whether these results could be considered as a prebiotic effect and used as a dietetic strategy in diseased animals to improve gut function or hepatic and renal nitrogen metabolism should be evaluated in future studies. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate renal function in healthy dogs undergoing general anesthesia and ovariohysterectomy without concurrent IV administration of fluids. ANIMALS: 35 healthy client-owned dogs. PROCEDURE: Dogs were medicated with promazine hydrochloride (0.05 mg/kg of body weight, SC) approximately 45 minutes before induction of anesthesia with thiopental sodium (10 to 15 mg/kg, IV). Anesthesia was maintained with 2% halothane in oxygen. Ovariohysterectomies were performed by senior veterinary students under the direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon. Renal function was assessed (serum urea and creatinine concentrations, fractional clearance of sodium, urine alkaline phosphatase [ALP] and gamma-glutamyltransferase [GGT] activities, urine specific gravity, and enumeration of renal tubular epithelial cells in urine sediment) prior to and 24 and 48 hours after surgery. RESULTS: Duration of general anesthesia ranged from 80 to 310 minutes. Urine specific gravity and ALP activity and serum urea and creatinine concentrations did not change over time. Fractional clearance of sodium decreased 24 and 48 hours after surgery, whereas urine GGT activity and the ratio of urine GGT activity to urine creatinine concentration increased 24 hours after surgery, compared with presurgery values. Renal tubular epithelial cells increased in number in urine sediment from 11 of 35 (31.4%) dogs and 5 of 35 (14.3%) dogs 24 and 48 hours after surgery, respectively. However, this increase was not clinically relevant. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Intravenous administration of fluids to healthy dogs undergoing general anesthesia and elective surgery may not be necessary for maintenance of renal homeostasis. 相似文献

Nine combinations of dosages and concentrations of D-xylose were given orally to eight clinically normal, immature dogs. The concentrations and dosages of D-xylose consisted of 5%, 10%, and 20% at 250 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg, and 750 mg/kg. Serum samples were collected at 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 180 minutes. Serum xylose was quantitated using the phloroglucinol microassay technique. A peak in serum xylose concentration was seen for each treatment combination at 60 or 90 minutes after dosing. The dosage effect was important in influencing serum xylose values (P < 0.0001). As the test solution dosages increased from 250 mg/kg to 500 mg/kg and 750 mg/kg, serum xylose values (when dosage was analyzed over the length of the entire test) rose linearly (R(2) = 0.98). The treatment combinations of 5% and 20% xylose solutions dosed at 750 mg/kg produced the highest serum xylose values at the 60- and 90-minute peak intervals. The independent effect of concentration was significant (p < 0.001) but was overridden by the stronger dosage effect. Serum xylose concentrations varied little statistically (p > 0.05) when the 5%, 10%, and 20% solutions were compared at a specific dosage. 相似文献

A prospective, cross-sectional study was performed to qualitatively and quantitatively compare the echogenicity of the renal cortex relative to the liver in healthy dogs. Twenty-five normal adult dogs were examined ultrasonographically. Three standard B-mode images (8.0 MHz) and three tissue harmonic images of the cranial pole of the right kidney adjacent to the caudate lobe of the liver were obtained. Renal and hepatic echogenicities were qualitatively compared by two observers. Subsequently, regions of interest (ROIs) were drawn in the renal cortex and the adjacent liver parenchyma at equal depths on each image, using two different ROI geometries: deep adjacent half-annular ROIs centered at the focal zone and small superficial adjacent squares placed in the near field. Renal and hepatic mean pixel intensities were quantified and averaged for individual subjects. Qualitatively, the right renal cortex was more commonly hyperechoic to liver. Quantitatively, the renal cortical mean pixel intensity was significantly higher than that of liver using deep half-annular ROIs, but not superficial square ROIs, for both standard (P = 0.0007) and harmonic (P = 0.0107) tissue imaging. These findings suggest that the renal cortex can be slightly hyperechoic to adjacent liver. The framework within which the canine renal cortical parenchyma is routinely evaluated in abdominal ultrasonography should be reconsidered, and mild hyperechogenicity relative to the liver (at 8.0 MHz) interpreted as a normal finding. 相似文献

Objective
To evaluate the dose-sparing effect of midazolam or diazepam on the dose of alfaxalone required to achieve endotracheal intubation in premedicated dogs.Study design
Prospective, randomized, ‘blinded’, controlled clinical trial.Animals
Ninety healthy dogs anaesthetized for elective surgery or diagnostic procedures. Methods
Saline (0.1 mL kg–1), or midazolam or diazepam (0.2, 0.3, 0.4 or 0.5 mg kg–1) intravenously (IV) was randomly assigned; investigators were unaware of group designation. After premedication with IV acepromazine 0.01 mg kg–1 and methadone 0.2 mg kg–1, the degree of sedation was assessed. Alfaxalone (0.5 mg kg–1) was administered IV, followed by the assigned treatment. Further alfaxalone was administered until endotracheal intubation could be performed. Ease of endotracheal intubation, pulse rate and arterial blood pressure were assessed. General linear models were used to examine the effect of treatment drug and dose on induction dose of alfaxalone with Tukey’s post hoc tests. Incidence of adverse reactions was assessed with chi-square tests. Results
There were no significant differences between groups with regard to demographic data or sedation. Median (range) induction dose of alfaxalone in the saline group was 0.74 (0.43–1.26) mg kg–1 compared with 0.5 (0.46–0.75) mg kg–1 and 0.5 (0.42–1.2) mg kg–1 for the midazolam and diazepam groups, respectively. Midazolam 0.3 and 0.5 mg kg–1 (p = 0.005 and 0.044, respectively) and diazepam 0.4 mg kg–1 (p = 0.032) reduced the alfaxalone dose compared with saline. Adverse effects were not significantly different between groups. Midazolam 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mg kg–1 (p < 0.044, p = 0.001, p = 0.007, p = 0.044, respectively) and diazepam 0.2 and 0.5 mg kg–1 (p = 0.025 and p = 0.025) improved intubation score compared with saline. Conclusion and clinical relevance
Midazolam 0.3 and 0.5 mg kg–1 and diazepam 0.4 mg kg–1 coadministered at anaesthetic induction allow alfaxalone dose reduction in healthy dogs. Use of benzodiazepines improved the ease of endotracheal intubation. 相似文献15.

ObjectiveTo determine the effects of intravenous (IV) magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) as a bolus followed by a constant rate infusion (CRI) on anaesthetic requirements, neuroendocrine stress response to surgery, haemostasis and postoperative analgesia in healthy dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy.Study designBlinded randomized clinical trial.AnimalsSixteen female dogs.MethodsAfter intramuscular premedication with acepromazine (0.05 mg kg?1) and morphine (0.3 mg kg?1), anaesthesia was induced with diazepam (0.2 mg kg?1) and propofol (2 mg kg?1) intravenously and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen in all dogs. Dogs were randomly assigned to two groups, M and C. Group M received MgSO4 (50 mg kg?1 over 15 minutes, followed by a 15 mg kg?1 hour?1 CRI). Group C received an equivalent bolus and CRI of lactated Ringer's solution. In addition, all dogs received lactated Ringer's solution (10 mL kg?1 over 15 minutes followed by 10 mL kg?1 hour?1). End-tidal isoflurane and carbon dioxide tensions, cardio-respiratory variables, arterial blood gases, electrolytes, ACTH and cortisol concentrations were measured at different time points. Thromboelastography (TEG) was performed pre- and post-anaesthesia. Postoperative pain was evaluated using the short form of the Glasgow Composite Pain Scale. Data were analysed with repeated measures anova and Mann–Whitney U tests (p< 0.05).ResultsNo statistically significant differences between groups were found in any of the measured variables. However, the alpha angle and maximal amplitude recorded by TEG in group M were significantly increased post-anaesthesia, but remained within the reference interval. One dog in Group M and two in Group C received rescue analgesia during recovery. Conclusions and clinical relevanceAs used in this study, MgSO4 failed to decrease isoflurane requirements, postoperative pain and stress hormone concentrations; however, it did not produce any cardio-respiratory or major haemostatic side effects. Administration of intravenous MgSO4 together with an opioid during ovariohysterectomy in dogs does not seem to provide any clinical advantage. 相似文献

Objective – Investigate the effects of assisted nutritional support on hospital outcome in dogs and cats, and the relationship between hospital outcome and energy intake, body condition score (BCS), physical status score, and type of nutritional support used. Design – Retrospective analysis of hospitalized animals. Setting – Teaching Veterinary Hospital. Animals – Four hundred and sixty‐seven dogs and 55 cats. Interventions – Routine clinical nutritional support. Measurements and Main Results – The following variables were recorded for each animal: energy intake, body weight at admission and discharge, BCS, physical status score, and type of nutritional support used. Disease severity was negatively associated with hospital outcome and energy intake (P=0.009). Energy intake was positively associated with hospital discharge (P<0.001). Outcome may be related to BCS, with discharge rates of 73% for animals with low BCS, and 84.7% for those at an ideal BCS or overweight (P=0.04). Sixty‐four percent of animals showed voluntary food intake (92.9% were discharged), 19.0% received enteral support (71.8% were discharged), 7.0% were forced fed (75.0% were discharged), 6.0% received parenteral support (61.9% were discharged), and 4.0% did not receive calories (38.4% were discharged), suggesting a possible relationship between the type of nutritional support, energy intake, and outcome (P=0.009). Conclusions – Energy supply, even if modest and close to resting energy requirements appears to be positively associated with hospital discharge. However, disease severity was the main negative factor on outcome and also had a negative effect on energy intake, making it difficult to separate the effects of both factors when interpreting hospital discharge. Thin animals with low BCS had greater mortality. 相似文献
