The effects of sheep grazing, with or without a 7-week rest period before ear emergence, on species balance in four perennial ryegrass/white clover swards were assessed.
Swards of an early (Aurora) or a late (Melle) flowering ryegrass were grown with either a small-leaved (Kent) or a medium-leaved (Milkanova) clover.
The clover lamina, expressed as a proportion of the total lamina mass, was greater with Kent than Milkanova. This proportion was not changed by resting the Aurora (earlier rest) swards, but was increased by resting the Melle (later rest) swards. A greater proportion of the clover lamina mass was near the top of the canopy in the Milkanova than in the Kent swards, and during the summer than in spring or autumn. The densities of clover growing points were greater in the Kent than the Milkanova swards and were increased by the late rest period. This effect persisted over the winter.
Stocking density was higher on the Kent than the Milkanova swards. The effects of the two rest periods, and the variety combinations, on pasture composition are interpreted as being principally a result of the differences in temperature between the earlier and later rest periods and of the different relationships between temperature and the growth of ryegrass and clover. Varietal characteristics, such as the vertical distribution of laminae, were also shown to be important.  相似文献

Microswards of white clover and perennial ryegrass were subjected to one of four treatments: weekly cutting to 3·5 cm, weekly cutting incorporating a period of no cutting for 6 weeks starting 27 April (early rest), weekly cutting incorporating a period of no cutting for 6 weeks starting 8 June (late rest), or cutting every 3 weeks. Two sward types were used: a mixture of white clover cv. Milkanova with perennial ryegrass cv. Melle, and white clover cv. Kent with perennial ryegrass cv. Melle. Growth measurements (leaf appearance, branching/tillering and stolon internode length) were confined to the first three treatments with records collected during contiguous 21-d measurement periods. Vertical height increments of clover and grass and red:far-red light ratios at the sward bases were also recorded at frequent intervals. At the end of the experiment population densities and unit weights were recorded for all treatments. Significant treatment effects on the rate processes were largely confined to the 21-d period immediately after weekly cutting of rested swards had resumed. On previously rested compared with weekly cut swards, clover leaf appearance rates were increased by 40% and branching rates by 164%. During the same period, grass leaf appearance rates were reduced by 50% and net tillering changed from positive to negative values. Though the rate responses were transient, effects were still apparent at harvest in September, when population density and content (proportion by population density and weight) of clover were significantly higher in the late rest treatment. The variety Kent showed a consistent, though usually nonsignificant, higher leaf appearance and branching rate compared with Milkanova, and in September was characterized by a higher population (7400 m?2 compared to 3200 m?2) of smaller units (27 compared to 46 mg/apical meristem) than Milkanova. The results are discussed in relation to defoliation effects and the role of light quantity and quality as they influence the component growth processes. Attention is drawn to the importance of canopy structure and the climatic and/or phenological differences in the relative seasonal behaviour of clover and grass, together with varietal variation within species in influencing responses to management manipulations.  相似文献

The effects of the imposition and timing of a rest period from continuous sheep stocking, for a conservation cut, on white clover presence in forty perennial ryegrass/white clover associations were studied over two full grazing seasons. Each association consisted of one grass variety along with one white clover variety, the grasses being diploid and tetraploid ryegrasses from each of five maturity groups and the white clovers from each of four leaf size categories. The presence of white clover within each association was assessed at the beginning and end of both seasons by means of a 0–64-m2 quadrat subdivided into 100 squares, each 80 mm × 80 mm, the number of squares in which any part of a white clover plant was visible being recorded. Complementary point quadrat data were also collected. Although continuous sheep stocking did not necessarily have an adverse effect on white clover presence, a July to mid-August rest period increased white clover proportions in the swards (means: unrested, 48–1; April to late May rest, 32.7; July to mid-August rest, 67.3 - s.e.d. 7.59; P < 0.05) the benefit increasing with increasing white clover leaf size. The early rest period (April to late May) reduced white clover presence and the late rest period (July to mid-August) increased white clover presence, these effects being intensified with increasing white clover leaf size (very large-leaved clover: unrested, 20.6; April to late May rest, 8.3; July to mid-August rest, 41.1 and small-leaved clover: unrested, 96.3; April to late May rest, 84.8; July to mid-August rest, 97 - s.e.d. 9.2; P <0001). Tetraploid ryegrass/white clover associations had consistently and significantly more white clover than diploid ryegrass/white clover associations of similar ryegrass maturity group (tetraploid, 53.4; diploid 44.8 - s.e.d. 2.12; P <0.001) and associations with early maturing ryegrass contained more white clover than those with late maturing ryegrasses, the effect of maturity group being greater than that of ploidy. Overall, white clover presence increased with increasing openness of grass growth habit.  相似文献

Continuous stocking with sheep at high stocking rates may reduce the content of white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixed grass-clover swards. The present experiment was carried out to investigate the effects on sward production and composition of resting a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)- white clover sward from grazing and taking a cut for conservation. Swards were set-stocked with 25 and 45 yearling wethers ha?1 either throughout a grazing season, or on swards that were rested for a 6-week period and then cut in early, mid- or late season. In an additional treatment swards were cut only and not grazed. Net herbage accumulation was higher at the lower of the two stocking rates and was marginally increased by the inclusion of a rest period at the high but not the low stocking rate. Clover content was higher at the lower stocking rate and was increased by the inclusion of a rest period by 30% at 45 sheep ha?1and by 11% at 25 sheep ha?1 The effect was most marked at the end of the rest period before cutting. When rested from grazing the tiller density of ryegrass decreased although tiller length increased, and clover stolon length, petiole length and leaflet diameter increased though leaf and node number per unit length of stolon decreased; the reverse applied when the sward was returned to grazing after cutting. At the high stocking rate, rest periods in mid-season or later maintained the greatest clover content and marginally increased total net herbage accumulation. At the low stocking rate the timing of the rest period had no significant effect on total net herbage accumulation or on clover content. These results show that the combination of grazing and cutting is of benefit where the stocking rate is high enough to threaten clover survival and limit sheep performance. However, at such a stocking rate, feed reserves are at a minimum throughout the grazing season and so opportunities for resting the sward are probably low.  相似文献

In a range of perennial ryegrass/white clover swards, variation in the surface heights of the grass and clover components, the rates of increase of these surface heights and the specific leaf areas (SLAs) of ryegrass and white clover were described for 1 year. The swards were of an early- or late-flowering (Aurora or Melle respectively) perennial ryegrass variety growing with either a small- or a medium-leaved (Kent or Milkanova) white clover and were either continuously stocked by sheep or continuously stocked apart from a rest period in April-May (Aurora) or May-June (Melle).
The surface heights of grass and clover were not affected by the variety of their companion species, and the surface heights of the two clover varieties were similar. The grass was always taller than the clover, although the magnitude of the difference between the species varied with time of year and the timing of the rest period.
Before the summer solstice the rate of increase in height of grass was greater than that of clover except at cool temperatures (5°C) and warm temperatures (16°C), and in the unrested Melle sward. After the solstice the rates of increase in height, particularly of clover, were lower than the rates seen at similar temperatures before the solstice.
Overall, the SLAs of both clover varieties were greater than those of ryegrass when grown with Aurora but not when grown with Melle, and the SLAs of both species increased during the year. By October the SLAs of both grass varieties were less than those of their companion clovers.
The results are discussed in relation to their implications for the species composition of the swards.  相似文献

During an experiment in which the height of mixed perennial ryegrass/while clover swards was maintained throughout the season at 3 or 7 cm (S and T, respectively), or were maintained al those heights until 30 June then changed (ST and TS), a limited study was made of the effects on the population densities and masses of the two species. During the earlier part of the season the short swards (S and ST) developed higher tiller and stolon growing point (sgp) densities, but with a reduced mass of ryegrass, principally of the pseudostem fraction, than the tail swards (T and TS). Thiere was little effect of sward height on the mass of clover. Whilst there was a general tendency for tiller and sgp densities to increase during the latter part of the season, tiller density increased greatly where sward height was reduced (TS) and both tiller and sgp densities were reduced where sward height was allowed to increase (ST). Changing sward height, whilst limiting the accumulation of dead grass material (TS), allowed grass leaf and dead masses to increase (ST), and adversely affected the increase in the clover component, principally of stolon material, in both ST and TS.  相似文献

The study was designed to test the hypothesis that grazing management in early season could alter sward structure to facilitate greater animal performance during critical periods. The effects of grazing a mixed perennial ryegrass/white clover sward at different sward surface heights, by cattle or sheep, in early season on sward composition and structure, and on the performance of weaned lambs when they subsequently grazed these swards in late season were determined. In two consecutive years, from mid‐May until mid‐July, replicate plots (three plots per treatment) were grazed by either suckler cows and calves or ewes and lambs at 4 or 8 cm sward surface heights (Phase 1). From mid‐August (Year 1) or early August (Year 2), weaned lambs continuously grazed, for a period of 36 d (Year 1) or 43 d (Year 2) (Phase 2), the same swards maintained at 4 cm (treatment 4–4), 8 cm (treatment 8–8) or swards which had been allowed to increase from 4 to 8 cm (treatment 4–8). Grazing by both cattle and sheep at a sward surface height of 4 cm compared with 8 cm in Phase 1 resulted in a higher (P < 0·001) number of vegetative grass tillers per m2 in Phase 2, although the effect was more pronounced after grazing by sheep. Sheep grazing at 8 cm in Phase 1 produced a higher number of reproductive tillers per m2 and a greater mass of reproductive stem (P < 0·001) than the other treatment combinations. The mass of white clover lamina was higher under cattle grazing (P < 0·05), especially on the 8‐cm treatment, and white clover accounted for a greater proportion of the herbage mass. These effects had mainly disappeared by the end of Phase 2. On the 4–4 and 8–8 sward height treatments the liveweight gain of the weaned lambs was higher (P < 0·05) on the swards previously grazed by cattle than those grazed by sheep. The proportion of white clover in the diet and the herbage intake also tended to be higher when the weaned lambs followed cattle. However, there was no difference in liveweight gain, proportion of white clover in the diet or herbage intake between swards previously grazed by cattle or sheep on the 4–8 sward height treatment. It is concluded that grazing grass/white clover swards by cattle compared with sheep for the first half of the grazing season resulted in less reproductive grass stem and a slightly higher white clover content in the sward, but these effects are transient and disappear from the sward by the end of the grazing season. They can also be eliminated by a short period of rest from grazing in mid‐season. Nevertheless these changes in sward structure can increase the performance of weaned lambs when they graze these swards in late season.  相似文献

Twelve plots were laid down on an existing perennial ryegrass/white clover sward, one plot in each of six replicated blocks receiving 100 kg  N ha−1 (100N) and one plot receiving no N (0N). Biomass, canopy development (stratified cuts and point quadrat records at 2–4-week intervals) and changes in stolon population density were recorded during one 8-week regrowth period (25 July–23 September) to investigate the likely causes of N effects on white clover in mixed swards.
Over the period, N fertilizer resulted in an increase of 74% in perennial ryegrass biomass and a reduction of 24% in white clover biomass. There was also a reduction of 44% in stolon growing point density, mainly due to lower density of younger stolon branches. White clover's contribution to the upper three leaf area index (LAI) units (taken as an estimate of the proportion of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intercepted) was, on average, 70% at 0N producing 74% of the sward biomass, compared with 46% contribution to interception and 37% contribution to biomass at 100N.
While there was no evidence of overtopping, it is concluded that N fertilizer application increased the LAI of perennial ryegrass in the upper layers of the canopy thereby reducing the share of available PAR to white clover. This, coupled with a lower radiation use efficiency at high N and lower population density, results in white clover's reduced performance in mixed swards receiving N fertilizer.  相似文献

Results for years 4–8 of a long-term grazing experiment on swards of a diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), var. Contender (D swards), a tetraploid ryegrass, var. Condesa (T swards) and Condesa with S184 white clover (Trifolium repens) (TC swards), direct sown in May 1987, are presented. The swards were continuously stocked with sheep from 1988 to 1990, as previously reported, and for a further 5 years, 1991–95, at a target sward surface height (SSH) of 4–6 cm. Control of sward height was successfully achieved by variable stocking, except in 1993 when paddocks were set stocked and the resulting mean SSH was 9·3 cm. Grass swards received on average 160 kg N ha?1 year?1; grass/clover swards were mainly not fertilized with N with the exception that they were given 30 kg N ha?1 as a remedial mid-summer application during a period of low herbage mass on offer in 1994 and 1995. Mean white clover content of the swards fell from 18·2% of herbage dry-matter (DM) in 1992 to 8·5% in 1993, whereas stolon lengths fell from 120 to 58 m m?2. A return to lower sward heights in 1994–95 resulted in an increase in white clover content to 12·8% by the final sampling in August 1995. Perennial ryegrass content of the grass swards remained high throughout (mean 96·7% in 1995). Perennial ryegrass tiller densities recorded in August 1991, 1993 and 1994 showed consistently significant (P < 0·001) sward differences (3-year mean 16 600, 13 700 and 10 100 perennial ryegrass tillers m?2 for the D, T and TC swards). In 1994, the year after lax grazing, a low perennial ryegrass tiller density (9100 m?2) and low white clover content (mean 4·3%) in the TC swards resulted in a much lower herbage bulk density than in the grass swards (April–July means 72, 94 and 44 kg OM ha?1 cm?1 for the D, T and TC swards). There was a consistent 40 g d?1 increase in lamb liveweight gain on the TC swards over the T swards, except in 1994. In that year there was a reduction in lamb liveweight gain of 33 g d?1 on the TC swards and a significant increase in ewe liveweight loss (117 g d?1) associated with low herbage bulk density despite optimal sward height. Lamb output (kg liveweight ha?1) on TC swards reflected white clover content, falling from a similar output to that produced from grass given 160 kg N ha?1, at 18% white clover DM content, down to 60% of grass + N swards with around 5% clover. A 6% greater output from the T than the D swards was achieved mainly through higher stocking rate. The experiment demonstrated a rapid, loss in white clover under lax grazing, and showed that the relationship between performance and sward height is also dependent on herbage density. High lamb output from a grass/clover sward was only achieved when the clover content was maintained at 15–20% of the herbage DM.  相似文献

Groups of six-month old lambs, which were either experienced or inexperienced grazers, strip-grazed swards of S24 perennial ryegrass or Hungaropoly tetraploid red clover, at daily herbage allowances of 20 or 40 g OM/kg LW, in late August and September. The swards were similar in N content, but the weight of standing crop, and its digestibility, were higher on grass than on clover. Estimates of herbage intake were made in two successive periods of 19 days. Intake (g OM/kg LW) was lower at low than at high allowance (by 22% and 28% in periods I and II). and experienced grazers ate more than inexperienced animals (by 27% and 22%). Intakes on clover were 28% higher than on grass in Period I, but in Period II the difference was not significant.  相似文献

A research programme was undertaken over two consecutive years with the purpose of studying the effect of herb–clover swards on lamb production performance year‐round. The focus of this study was on two consecutive late spring and early summer periods (2011, 2012). In each year, three sward treatments were compared on grazed paddocks with 40 lambs ha?1: (i) grass–clover mixture (perennial ryegrass [Lolium perenne L.] and white clover [Trifolium repens]); (ii) plantain–clover mixture (plantain [Plantago lanceolata], white clover and red clover [Trifolium pratense]); and (iii) chicory–plantain–clover mixture (plantain, chicory [Cichorium intybus L.] and white and red clovers). Lambs were weighed at 2‐week intervals, and carcass weights and GR tissue depth measurements were obtained at slaughter. In both years, lambs on treatments (ii) and (iii) had greater (< 0·05) final live weight, liveweight gain, carcass weight, dressing‐out percentage and GR tissue depth measurements, and lower feed conversion ratio compared to lambs on treatment (i). Lamb production was similar in treatments (ii) and (iii) (> 0·05) in each year. Therefore, during the late spring and early summer period, herb–clover mixture swards were found to be a superior option to perennial ryegrass–white clover for finishing lambs.  相似文献

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) grown in mixtures with grasses often constitutes a lower proportion of total yield in spring than in summer growth. A more even red clover proportion between the harvests would benefit forage quality and management at feeding. We investigated whether inclusion of early versus late‐maturing red clover varieties could reduce this disproportionality. In a two‐year field trial harvested three times per season, each of six red clover varieties was grown in two grass mixtures. Rate of phenological development did not differ during spring growth, but did so in regrowth after first and second cuts. Here, the earliest varieties constituted the highest proportion. At all harvests, the early varieties had lower crude protein concentrations and a higher content of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and indigestible NDF than the late varieties. Clover proportion was higher in swards with a mixture of timothy and meadow fescue than in swards with perennial ryegrass during the first year and lower in the second year. It is concluded that developmental rate should be explored further as a key character for red clover competiveness in spring growth of rapidly elongating grasses.  相似文献

The use of sward height as a criterion for determining the time and extent of stocking-rate changes on continuously grazed swards was investigated over a 2-year period (1985–86) in a sheep production experiment. Swards of three contrasting perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties were established with and without Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) at an upland site (310–363 m) in mid-Wales. From spring (late April) until weaning (mid-July) the pastures were continuously stocked with Beulah Speckled Face ewes and Suffolk cross lambs. During this period sward heights of 4 ± 0.5 cm were obtained and maintained by regular adjustment of animal number on individual paddocks. Grass-only swards received 160 and 200 kg N ha−1 and the grass clover swards were given 80 and 75 kg N ha−1 in 1985 and 1986 respectively.
Differences were observed between the treatments in sward height profiles over the season necessitating contrasting adjustments to stocking rates. Mean stocking rate necessary on early flowering Aurora (22 6 ewes ha−1) was respectively 27% and 17% higher than on late-flowering Aberystwyth S23 and Meltra (tetraploid) ryegrasses; mean stocking rate on grass-only swards was 19% higher than on the grass-clover pastures.
It is concluded that sward height is a useful criterion on which to make adjustments to stocking rates to compare the potential performance of contrasting swards, under continuous grazing. The infrequent adjustments required to maintain a constant sward height, especially on the late flowering diploid perennial ryegrass variety on which many upland pastures are based, suggest that the criterion of sward height could be successfully employed on farms as an aid to efficient grazing management.  相似文献

Two 1·0 ha plots of a late-heading diploid perennial ryegrass (var. Contender) and a late-heading tetraploid ryegrass (var. Condesa), and two 1·4 ha plots of the tetraploid with Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved white clover, were direct sown in May 1987. Over the three years 1988–90 they were continuously stocked by Mule ewes with Suffolk-cross twin lambs, from early April to the end of August, at a target sward surface height (SSH) of 4–6 cm on one set of plots (constant swards) and, on the other set, al 4–6 cm rising after June to a target 6–8 cm (rising swards). The heights were achieved by variable stocking. Fertilizer N was applied only to the grass plots at the rate of 150- 180kgN ha-1 annually.
SSH was mainly within the target 4–6 cm, after higher initial heights at turnout in 1988and 1990. Mean heights of the constant swards (April- August) averaged 5·53, 4·43 and 5·04cm in the three years. The rising swards (July-August) increased in height over the constant swards by an average of 0·88, 0·48 and 0·55 cm, in successive years.
Clover content of the herbage mass dry matter in the grass/clover swards increased over each grazing season to average 13·0, 26·5 and 21·2% in the three years, with a high mean stolon density of 130 in m-2 in August 1990. Ryegrass tiller densities in year 3 were 23% higher in the diploid than in the tetraploid swards, which had 43% more than the 10000 tillers m-2 of the tetraploid ryegrass/clover swards.
It is concluded that the combination of a densely stoloniferous small-leaved clover with the open growth habit of a tetraploid ryegrass can achieve swards of high clover content under continuous sheep stocking.  相似文献

Relative sheep production from Aurora (very early flowering), Mellra (late-flowering tetraploid) and Aberystwyth S23 (late flowering) perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties was compared during harvest years 4-6 (1988-90) as grass only (200 kg N ha−1) and grass/clover (75 kg N ha −1 in 1988, 0 kg N ha−1 in 1989 and 1990) at Bronydd Mawr Research Centre (310-363 m) in mid-Wales. The pastures were continuously stocked with Beulah Speckled Face ewes and their Suffolk cross lambs from spring to mid-July. From late July to early November only the weaned lambs grazed the swards.
Mean (1988-90) total annual lamb production per hectare from Aurora and Meltra was 70% and 16% more than that from S23. However, the difference between both varieties and S23 was much greater as grass/clover (Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved type) than as grass-only swards. Differences between the grasses in individual lamb growth rates were most pronounced during the post-weaning period, when that on Meltra was 38% and 23% more than on Aurora and S23 respectively.
Mean annual lamb output from grass/clover swards was only 70% of that from grass-only swards during the 2 years when the former swards received no fertilizer N. Averaged over the 3 years (1988-90) individual lamb liveweight gain post weaning was 38% higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards.
The results are discussed in relation to those for the first 3 harvest years (1985-87). It is concluded that, although Aurora was less persistent than both late-flowering varieties, its superiority in providing an average of 29% more lamb output than S23 during the critical spring period (up to early June) would be of considerable practical significance in upland sheep systems, as would be the overall superiority of the tetraploid Meltra over S23.  相似文献

White clover content and herbage production in grass/clover swards were studied at contrasting altitudes in Wales. The lowland experiment (1) compared the performance of three clover varieties grown with four diploid perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) varieties with a range of heading dates. In the upland experiment (2) the productivity and persistence of Aberystwyth S184 (small-leaved) clover was studied in association with three perennial ryegrasses.
In experiment I. clover content and dry matter production with Aurora (very early) ryegrass was superior to that with Frances (early), Talbot (intermediate) and Melle (late). Furthermore, the performance of Kent wild white clover (small-leaved) was better than that of medium-leaved Menna and Grasslands Huia. Averaged over two years (1985 and 1986) mean clover content of Kent was 22% compared with 9% and 10% of Menna and Huia.
Performance of S184 clover during the five years (1986–90) of experiment 2 was better with Meltra (late tetraploid) than with Aberystwyth S23 (late diploid) and intermediate with Aurora. Clover stolon length and growing point number declined to a low level in 1988 but increased dramatically in 1989 and 1990 after cessation of applying fertilizer N.
Results from both sites were related to animal performance data previously published. It is concluded that small-leaved clover varieties are needed to ensure a high proportion of clover in sheep pastures and also that choice of companion ryegrass can have a significant effect on the performance of the legume component.  相似文献

A comparison was made of canopy structure, photosynthesis and dry weight production, during growth periods in spring and summer, of a large-leaved and a small-leaved cultivar of white clover (Blanca and S184), grown in mixtures with perennial ryegrass or tall fescue. Both clovers had leaves in the topmost, best-lit layer of the canopies, even when sward surface height reached 40 cm in early June. Except early in the spring growth period, both clovers had a greater proportion of their leaf area near the top of the canopy than did their companion grass. Both clovers had a greater relative growth rate than the grass, increasing their percentage of the total crop dry weight during both spring and summer growth periods. Differences between clover cultivars were relatively minor and did not affect their dry weight in either measurement period. During the first growth period there was more clover dry weight with tall fescue than with ryegrass. There were no effects of clover cultivar on grass dry weights.  相似文献

White clover varieties, potentially suitable for inclusion in seed mixtures for mixed stock-rearing farm systems, were evaluated when growing with S23 perennial ryegrass under rotational sheep grazing with a silage cut in late May or early June, as practiced on farms. Monoculture grass swards were also included to enable the direct and indirect contribution of white clover to total sward production to be evaluated.
White clover increased total sward production during all three years of the trial by an average of 50%. Although clover content of swards were similar, large differences occurred in their grass content, especially in the third year, when difference in total yields of swards based on large–leaved clover varieties was 2 t ha −1 while difference in clover yield was only 0-6 to ha–1 The indirect contribution of white clover, namely the extra grass resulting from N transfer, was greater in the spring than in the autumn. It was also greater for Nesta than for other varieties. and exceptional for this variety in that the increase in grass yield above that of grass monoculture was maintained over three harvest years.  相似文献

Five binary perennial grass/white clover (Trifolium repens, cv. Menna) mixtures were evaluated over a 3-year period under continuous sheep stocking together with the imposition of a rest period for either an early or a late conservation cut; the experiment with plot sizes of 0·16 ha was replicated three times. The grass species and cultivars used were Merlinda tetraploid and Magella diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), Prairial cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), Rossa meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) and Goliath timothy (Phleum pratense). The greatest total lengths of white clover stolon developed in the meadow fescue (171·6 m m?2) and timothy (151·9 m m?2) associations compared with those in tetraploid perennial ryegrass (98·6 m m?2), diploid perennial ryegrass (91·9 m m?2) and cocksfoot (74·6 m m?2) (s.e.d. 16·4, P < 0·001). On average, the proportion of white clover stolon that was buried was between 0·86 and 0·89 and this was more abundant in late than early season. Whereas timothy persisted, the persistence of meadow fescue was low under any of the managements tested and this was markedly reduced by the third grazing season. In the diploid perennial ryegrass sward, a late June to early August rest period for conservation enhanced white clover stolon length. An early April to late May rest period greatly reduced total white clover stolon length in both diploid perennial ryegrass and tetraploid perennial ryegrass associations (diploid perennial ryegrass-unrested 89 m m?2, early rest 56·1 m m?2, late rest 130·7 m m?2; tetraploid perennial ryegrass - unrested 125·1 m m?2, early rest 71 m m?2, late rest 99·7 m m?2; s.e.d. 19·19, P < 0·001). The numbers of white clover stolon growing points per unit stolon length were greatest when the sward was rested during late June to early August ?55·9 m?1 stolon length compared with 45·7 m?1 for an April to late May rest and 46 m?1 in the absence of a rest (s.e.d. 2·59, P < 0·001). Likewise, the percentage of stolon above ground was greatest with the late June to early August rest ?15·78% compared with 10·61% for the April to late May rest and 7·69% for no rest (s.e.d. 1·569, P < 0·001). The complementary percentages of buried stolon indicate the important role this fraction has and the need to study stolon behaviour in grazing studies generally. It is concluded that, in relation to perennial ryegrass as a companion grass, meadow fescue and timothy allow better white clover development and cocksfoot less. However, other attributes have to be considered, for example the poor persistence of meadow fescue and the slower regrowth of timothy, both of which allow the invasion of weed grasses, or the lower acceptability of cocksfoot to livestock. The timing of the rest period before the conservation cut can influence white clover development considerably, but the effects differed with different companion grasses.  相似文献

Failure of perennial ryegrass swards to persist is a key issue on dairy farms in many areas of the world. This study describes an experiment conducted to test the hypothesis that high ryegrass seeding rates (>18 kg seed ha?1) reduce plant size and physical survival during the first year after sowing, with negative implications for population persistence. Four cultivars representing four functional types of perennial ryegrass were sown at five seeding rates (equivalent to 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 kg seed ha?1) with white clover in three dairying regions of New Zealand. Plant establishment rates, size and survival were measured for the first 13 months after sowing. Herbage accumulation, botanical composition and perennial ryegrass tiller density were also monitored. Increasing seeding rate reduced plant survival in the seven weeks after sowing, reflecting likely differences in germination and very early mortality of small seedlings. Thereafter, plant survival was relatively high and consistent across seeding rates at two sites but was consistently greater in the 6 kg ha?1 treatment compared with the 24 and 30 kg ha?1 treatments at one site. Higher seeding rates also increased ryegrass tiller density and the contribution of ryegrass towards total herbage biomass but reduced the contribution of white clover. Very few cultivar × seeding rate interactions were detected for any of the measured variables. Many of the seeding rate effects dissipated by the end of the first year after sowing, indicating that high seeding rates did not predispose swards to poor persistence in the longer term, irrespective of ryegrass functional type.  相似文献
