Summary Retention of pollen grains following natural self-pollination was evaluated in 15 cultivars (cvs.) of almond, 4 peach and 2 nectarine cvs., and 37 interspecific peach × almond hybrids compared to 7 almond seedlings. The level of pollen retention was presumed to reflect and integrate the degree of homogamy, the amount of pollen produced by the flower, the extent of anther-stigma contact during anthesis, and the level of pollen germination. Pollen retention averaged 5 times greater in the peach and nectarine cvs. than in the almond cvs. The greater pollen retention, characteristic of the peach, was dominant in expression in the interspecific F1 hybrids over the lower levels of pollen retention, characteristic of the almond. Thus, gametophytic self-incompatibility is not the only trait supporting outcrossing in the almond. Our data are consistent with the concept of co-evolution of floral traits relating to different breeding strategies. The level of pollen retention could often be anticipated at anthesis on the basis of blossom phenotype. That is, stigma-anther contact was observed frequently in the blossoms of peach, nectarine, and the peach × almond F1 hybrids, but only infrequently in almond.  相似文献

Summary The almond of commerce (Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A. Webb) is self-incompatible (SI) and requires honey-bees to effect the transfer of pollen among cultivars that flower simultaneously. Four year old trees from the F2 generation of several peach x almond hybrids were studied to determine whether self-compatibility (SC) and the potentiality for natural, i.e., abiotic, self pollination (NSP) are genetically related or are inherited independently. Both SC and the high potentiality for NSP are characteristic of peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) but not almond. Forty percent of SC genotypes exhibited adequate NSP (SC, +NSP) for good fertility i.e., without insect-mediated pollination. The remaining 60% of SC genotypes (SC,-NSP) exhibited an average 61% reduction in fruit set on limbs bagged to exclude honeybees during anthesis relative to fruit set on open pollinated limbs. Our data are consistent with the concept that fertility is dependent upon the load of compatible pollen deposited on the stigma. Fruit set reduction on bagged limbs, compared with bagged and self-pollinated limbs, was presumably due to a) lack of/insufficient pollination for fertilization and/or b) post-zygotic abortion of genetically inferior recombinants. Selection following manual self-pollination may result in SC genotypes with or without the capacity for NSP. In contrast, significant fruit set on limbs enclosed during pistil receptivity necessitates that the genotype selected express both SC and the potentiality for NSP.  相似文献

Genetic diversity, as revealed by eighteenSimple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers inthirty almond [P. dulcis (Mill.) D.A.Webb], twenty fresh-market peach [Prunus persica (L.), Basch], fifteenprocessing clingstone peach cultivars, andten rootstocks, established the geneticrelatedness among cultivars andcharacterized the variation within andbetween species. One accession each of thewild Prunus species, P.davidiana [(Carriere) Franch] and P.webbii [(Spach.) Vieh.], was included inthe analysis. The number of presumedalleles revealed by the SSR analysis rangedfrom one to six in peach whereas almondcultivars showed a range of three to nine.Peach cultivars clustered into ten groups, which are in general agreement withdocumented origin. Most processingclingstone peach cultivars clusteredseparately from fresh-market freestonecultivars supporting a distinct origin. Twomajor clusters were observed in almond withone containing California cultivars and theother containing European cultivars and theimportant California cultivar Mission. Results establish the value of SSR markersfor distinguishing different geneticlineages and characterize an extensive andlargely unexploited inter-species gene poolavailable to peach and almond breedingprograms.  相似文献

Summary Genetic parameters were estimated in trials planted in connection with a reciprocal recurrent selection programme applied to Coffea canephora in Côte d'Ivoire. Narrow sense heritability values, estimated from a breakdown of the analysis of variance, were high for architectural characters (0.22 to 0.78) and medium for tree vigour (0.13 to 0.40) and for bean weight (0.15 to 0.28). Calculated heritability values for the first two harvests were high (h2>0.7), but much lower for the following harvests (less than 0.2). Heritability estimates by parent-offspring regressions gave variable results, though they were often similar to those obtained by variance analysis, especially for bean weight. Phenotypic and genetic correlations between tree vigour traits and productivity were high. Bean weight was not correlated with vigour or production. Canopy diameter of 4 year-old trees was closely correlated with cumulated productivity from 2 to 5 years in the absence of development competition between trees, but the correlation was low if trees were in competition with each other. The consequences of the results for the choice of characters to be selected among intergroup hybrids or the parents of both populations are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Pollen grain germination inside anthers has so far been known in only eleven chasmogamous angiospermous species. The discovery of this phenomenon in some varieties of Prunus amygdalus (almond) and Malus pumila (apple) is therefore significant. The anomaly appears to be genetically controlled, the gene expression occurring under specific environmental conditions.  相似文献

Summary Pollen grains from selected cutivars of almond [Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D. A. Webb] and peach (Prunus persica Batsch L.) were exposed to a range of temperatures between 1°C and 34°C on a thermogradient plate. Pollen germination at temperatures below 9°C was conspicuously greater in almond than peach. Miximal germination percentages were attained at about 16°C (almond) and 23°C (peach). The two species did not differ in their capacity for pollen tube elongation over a broad range of temperatures. Maximal pollen tube elongation occurred at temperatures 5°C to 8°C higher than maximal pollen germination. Species affiliation appeared to be of much greater consequence than chilling requirement or bloom date of the sporophyte in predicting gametophytic response to temperature.  相似文献

Summary The coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is an ancient cultivated plant, which has been selected to a certain extent in the course of ages, by using the fruits of high yielding trees for propagation. Two aggregate varieties can be distinguished, viz. the ordinary coconut (the tall type) and the dwarf coconut (the dwarf type). Apart from the height, there are differences in flower biology and earliness. The ordinary coconut is a cross pollinator because the male and the female flowers of a palm bloom at different times; the dwarf coconut, contrarily, is a self pollinator. The latter also distinguishes itself by early fertility and small fruits, while it proved to be too weak for planting on a commercial scale in Indonesia. The breeding of the ordinary coconut in Indonesia is based on the selection of good mother trees and the artificial crossing of high yielders. The progeny of these crosses form the so-called primary seed gardens. After thinning, the most productive trees will produce the fruits which will be used for the raising of secondary seed gardens. Attention should be paid to ensure that a fruit variety of different types is included in order to prevent inbreeding. The tall type can be crossed with the dwarf type. The F1 generation shows a difference in flowering time between the male and the female flowers, an early fertility and fruits of intermediate size. It does not show the weakness of the dwarfs. The hybrid can be used for circumstances which requite early fruit bearing, for instance in new settlements. The hybrids can be obtained by regularly cutting away all male flowers of the dwarf trees standing near the tall ones, before the flowers open.  相似文献

Summary Eight controlled crosses were made between seven different sweet-kerneled almond cultivars (Prunus dulcis [Mill.] D. A. Webb), and five crosses were made between sweet x highly floriferous bitter almond clones. Sweet x bitter progenies out-yielded the sweet x sweet matings by more than three to one in the first year of production. This was attributable to greater cropping efficiency rather than to tree size or precocity. There was no pleiotropic association or association due to linkage between bitterness and yield. The selected Alnem (bitter) clones appear to be potentially useful progenitors for increasing almond yield capacity by conventional breeding methodology.  相似文献

Summary Cultivated almonds (Prunus dulcis (Miller) D.A. Webb) in Morocco are still propagated from seeds by farmers to overcome transplant failure of grafted trees. Almond collections in southern Morocco conducted since 1975 have resulted in the selection of clones planted at 3 experimental stations. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to compare kernel, nut, leaf, and growth habit characteristics among 67 selected Moroccan clones and 14 introduced cultivars. Clustering of clones from similar countries and collection areas would suggest the existence of different almond populations. The Moroccan clones did not cluster separately from the foreign cultivars. Three Moroccan clones had exceptionally large nuts and kernels while 7 selections had high yield potential due to high spur density. Moroccan selections tended to be characterized by small leaves in comparison to foreign cultivars. No evidence was found to suggest the existence of separate populations within the Moroccan almond germplasm.  相似文献

The present investigation discusses the scope for transferring of resistance to leaf spot disease incited by Alternaria helianthi from two hexaploid wild species (H. tuberosus and H. resinosus) to diploid cultivated sunflower. Interspecific hybrids produced between sunflower and these two hexaploid species were partially fertile with tetraploid chromosome status. Backcrosses of these interspecific hybrids with cultivated sunflower resulted in the formation of sterile triploid plants. To overcome the problem of sterility and facilitate backcrosses with cultivated sunflower, anther culture of the tetraploid interspecific hybrids was carried out to bring down their chromosome number to diploid status. Anthers from both interspecific hybrids were cultured on basal Murashige and Skoog media supplemented with varying concentrations of organics and the growth regulators benzyladenine and naphthaleneacetic acid. Anthers of interspecific hybrids involving H. resinosus responded well and regenerated through an embryogenic route at a frequency of 98.7%. But in interspecific hybrids with H. tuberosus, anthers formed callus and subsequently regenerated shoots through an organogenic pathway. DNA ploidy analysis of anther culture plants of interspecific hybrids derived from H. tuberosus crosses was carried out to identify plants with desired diploid status. In vitro screening of parents, interspecific hybrids and anther culture plantlets against A. helianthi showed resistance in 68.5% of the anther culture plants of interspecific hybrids from H. tuberosus and in 24.3% of the plants derived from interspecific hybrids involving H. resinosus.  相似文献

Summary Several hybrids between Oryza sativa and O. glaberrima and their backcrosses with O. sativa were studied. Their seed sterility was very different; large differences were also observed in the level of pollen sterility and in the earliness of microspore failure. The proportion of aborted embryo sacs was much lower than the rate of sterile male gametophytes. The backcross populations were much more sterile than the corresponding F1 hybrids. On the base of our observations and according to the literature, we may conclude that genic unbalance is the main cause of sterility of these hybrids, but that physiological factors may also be involved. Thus a restoration of fertility is generally possible by selection. On the other hand, male-sterile lines could be bred from some of these hybrids.  相似文献

Summary The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) is a serious pest of the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). Trichome-based host plant resistance of wild Lycopersicon species may offer an alternative to pesticides for management of this pest. Two wild species, Lycopersicon cheesmanii f. minor and L. pennellii, were crossed with L. esculentum and the types and densities of trichomes possessed by the F1 hybrids measured. The effects of these trichomes on M. persicae were assessed by placing nymphs on leaves and, 96 hr later, designating each nymph as either dead, alive, emigrating off the leaf or unaccounted for. A generalised linear model was used to detect relationships between the numbers of nymphs in each designation and the densities of trichomes and leaf area. Mortality of nymphs on L. pennellii hybrids was associated with high densities of type IV and low densities of type I trichomes. Mortality of nymphs on L. cheesmanii f. minor hybrids was associated with high densities of type III trichomes. An increase in the densities of type III trichomes on L. pennellii hybrids was associated with greater numbers of nymphs emigrating off the leaf whilst unaccounted nymphs on L. pennellii hybrids were associated with increased densities of type VII and type I trichomes. Further experimentation using excised leaflets found mortality on L. pennellii hybrids may be due to nymphs being hindered by type I trichomes and increased densities of type V trichomes were associated with greater numbers of unhindered nymphs. Implications of results are discussed in the context of introducing trichome-based host plant resistance into L. esculentum.  相似文献

Summary Application of 200 to 800 mg/l silver nitrate (AgNO3) to the female kakrol or teasle gourd (Momordica dioica Roxb.) plant was effective for inducing hermaphrodite flowers. Pollen grain viability of the hermaphrodite flowers was as high as that of normal male flowers. Crossing among female genotypes of different fruit morphotypes, taking pollen from the induced hermaphrodite flowers, produced fruits and seeds. Sex of hybrids between female and normal male segregated into male and female in equal proportion, while the hybrids from female homo-sexual crosses produced only female plants. This indicated that sex of kakrol is controlled by a single factor; male being heterozygous and the female is homozygous recessive. The possibility to evaluate both parents for fruit characteristics should facilitate breeding.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this study was to determine at what stage of seedling development the flowering attributes in winterhardy R. rugosa hybrids could be assessed and if these attributes could be improved through breeding. The analysis of flowering was based on the duration of the flowering period and on amount of flowers produced. Most seedlings from rugosa hybrids could be assessed at an age of 3 years. The duration of the flowering period and flower productivity were not correlated. Several seedlings were improved in both attributes over the longer flowering and more floriferous parent.  相似文献

Summary The possibilities to transfer important traits and in particular resistance to the beet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii, abbrev. BCN) from Raphanus sativus to Brassica napus were investigated. For these studies B. napus, R. sativus, the bridging hybrid ×Brassicoraphanus (Raparadish) as well as offspring of the cross ×Brassicoraphanus (Raparadish) ×B. napus were used. Reciprocal crosses between B. napus and R. sativus were unsuccessful, also with the use of embryo rescue. Crosses between ×Brassicoraphanus as female parent and B. napus resulted in a large number of F1 hybrids, whereas the reciprocal cross yielded mainly matromorphic plants. BC1, BC2 and BC3 plants were obtained from backcrosses with B. napus, which was used as the male parent. F1 hybrids and BC plants showed a large variation for morphology and male and female fertility. Cuttings of some F1 and BC1 plants, obtained from crosses involving resistant plants of ×Brassicoraphanus, were found to possess a level of resistance similar to that of the resistant parent. These results and indications for meiotic pairing between chromosomes of genome R with those of the genomes A and/or C suggest that introgression of the BCN-resistance of Raphanus into B. napus may be achieved.  相似文献

Interspecific hybridisation with Trifolium nigrescens Viv. is a possible strategy to improve the reproductive potential of white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Following the development of a fertile F1 hybrid, three generations of backcrossing have been carried out usingT. repens as the recurrent parent. Vegetative characteristics, stolon growth and seed yield components of the backcross (BC) 2 and 3 generations, as well as the parental species were measured on spaced plants grown in the field. Leaf size and plant spread of the BC2 and BC3 generations were less than T. repens but there was no difference in plant fresh weight. Numbers of inflorescences per plant and florets per inflorescence of the backcrosses were greater than T. repens however this was not reflected indifferences in seed yield per plant asT. repens had more seeds per floret and per plant than the backcrosses. Differences in stolon length, the proportion of flowering nodes and the pattern of axillary bud development were observed between T. repens and the backcrosses. Significant variation among the BC 3 generation for vegetative and reproductive traits was observed. Individual plants among the BC 3 generation were identified that combine high forage yield, substantial inflorescence production and good fertility, and these will form the basis of further selection. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

For decades, seedling peaches have been used as the standard rootstock in California almond orchards. Vigorous, deep rooted trees are needed in almond orchards for maximum yields and to withstand the annual tree-shaking at harvest. Currently, researchers are actively evaluating rootstocks for almonds in field trials and in various screening protocols. In this study, seedling rootstocks, obtained from male-sterile advanced generation peach-almond (PEAL) hybrid mother trees, were compared with ‘Nemaguard’ peach seedlings for emergence in the nursery row, trunk caliper at propagation time, and end of season dormant above ground tree weight. Seedling emergence was affected significantly (P ≤ 0.05) by seed source, as was trunk caliper and end of season dormant above ground tree weight. Trunk caliper and dormant above ground tree weight were also affected significantly (P ≤ 0.05) by planting year. Results obtained in this study demonstrate the enhanced first year growth from seedlings of advanced generation PEAL hybrids, as compared to ‘Nemaguard’ seedlings. Seedling emergence in the rootstock bed was not affected significantly by planting year. Advanced generation PEAL hybrid seedlings were ready for June-budding at an earlier date compared to ‘Nemaguard’ seedlings, providing the potential for larger-sized finished nursery stock by the end of the growing season. Due to the male-sterile status of the advanced generation PEAL mother trees, bloom periods of several root-knot nematode resistant rootstock cultivars were examined for their degree of synchronicity with the mother trees. The examined rootstocks and mother trees varied in both chill hour and post-chill heat requirements necessary to effect bloom. ‘Flordaguard’ peach rootstock began bloom in advance of the male-sterile mother trees, whereas the bloom period of ‘Tsukuba No. 4’ occurred well after, suggesting they would not be effective synchronous pollenizers for consistent hybrid seed production. Based on more limited flowering period data, better bloom synchronicity was achieved with a Tsukuba No. 4 X Flordaguard hybrid.  相似文献

Aluminium (Al) tolerance of 11 cultivars, breeding populations and accessions of the perennial grass, phalaris (Phalaris aquatica L.), was investigated in low ionic strength nutrient solutions. The populations were chosen to determine whether a program to improve the tolerance of phalaris to acid soils had resulted in improved Al tolerance. Populations derived by backcrossing genes from a more Al-tolerant species, P. arundinacea L. (AT populations), were significantly more Al tolerant than populations based on pure P. aquatica. Smaller levels of improvement in Al tolerance had also been achieved within P. aquatica through a combination of selection in Al solutions and at acid soil field sites. The response of roots and shoots to Al stress was similar. Some differences in ranking were obtained depending on whether Al tolerance was defined by actual growth in Al solution or growth relative to the zero Al treatment. Performance in nutrient solution containing Al was highly correlated with second year yield and persistence at a field site with acid soil high in Al to depth. Actual root dry weight in nutrient solution containing Al gave a slightly higher correlation with the field data than root weight relative to the zero control. A tendency for root dry weight to segregate in the presence of Al was observed in some P. aquatica populations but not in the AT populations. It was concluded that a significant improvement in the Al tolerance of phalaris has been achieved through a program to introgress genes from P. arundinacea into P. aquatica.  相似文献

Twenty-one (near) pentaploid hybrids between sexually incompatible Solanum commersonii [2x(1EBN)] and cultivated S. tuberosum [4x(4EBN)] were characterized for tuber traits and fertility. A number of genotypes resembled the S. tuberosum type in terms of stolon length and eye depth and produced tubers under long day conditions. Tuber yields were not as high as expected, probably due to lack of adaptation of the S. commersonii genome to the environmental conditions in southern Italy (on average 325 g·pt−1 and 285 g·pt−1 in 2003 and in 2004, respectively). Compared to 2004, in the summer of 2003, characterized by extremely high temperatures, hybrids gave a higher tuber yield than the S. tuberosum control, suggesting that in our environmental conditions the wild S. commersonii genome, rather than resulting in heterosis for tuber yield, provides better adaptation to harsh environments. Although aneuploidy has often been associated with reduced fertility, several hybrids were fertile in crosses with S. tuberosum when used as female parents. In particular, the average berry set and number of seeds per berry were 38.2% and 31.8%, respectively. Based on significant relationships between ploidy levels and all yield and fertility data measured, the presence of extra chromosome affected the parameters considered: tuber yield in 2003 and 2004, percentage of fruit set, number of seeds per berry and number of seeds per pollinated flower. Regression analysis also indicated that “Residuals” were significant for all parameters measured. Therefore, additional factors (e.g. the genetic makeup of hybrids) may be key to fertility and yield.  相似文献

Summary The 6×6×4 analysis of variance of the mean percentage embryo survival for six variegated cultivars of Pelargonium × hortorum Bailey, with mutant plastids in their germ layers, and for their isogenic green (G) clones, shows highly significant differences between females (81 to 91 per cent) and between plastid crosses (83 to 91 per cent). Between cultivar differences are attributed largely to additive effects corresponding to additive gene action, and between plastid differences to a lower survival after crosses with white (W) males than with green males. The relationship between overall fertility (% fertilization × survival) and plastid crosses is a stepwise decline in the order G×G>G×W>W×G>W×W (28 to 19 per cent) in which the white embryos growing in a white mother are approximately 30 per cent less fertile than the green embryos in a green mother. The non-surviving embryos are classified into empty, undeveloped and dwarf embryos and submitted to a 6×4 analysis of variance after summing through males. The significant heterogeneity between females is attributed largely to a difference between one cultivar-with a high frequency of dwarf and a low frequency of undeveloped embryos-and the other five cultivars. The absence of a significant plastid effect upon any stage of embryo breakdown indicates that the depressive effect of white plastids is spread evenly throughout development.  相似文献
