Two experiments were carried out in Guadeloupe to estimate the organic matter intake (OMI) and digestibility (OMD) of a Dichanthium spp. sward, grazed by tethered Creole heifers [mean live weight (LW) 202 ± 2·0 kg], at three daily herbage allowances. Experiment 1 examined herbage allowances of 16, 25 and 31 kg of dry matter (DM) d–1 on a fertilized sward at 21 days of regrowth whereas, in experiment 2, lower allowances of 11, 15 and 19 kg DM d–1 were examined on the same sward, which was unfertilized and grazed at 14 days of regrowth. In each experiment, the herbage was grazed with three groups of two heifers in a 3 × 3 Latin square design. Sward characteristics were described before grazing. OMI was calculated from total faecal output, and OMD was predicted from the crude protein (CP) content of the faeces. The amount of herbage defoliated by the heifers was also estimated on tillers selected at random.
Organic matter intakes were on average 26 g and 19 g OM kg–1 LW, and OMD values were 0·740 and 0·665 for Experiments 1 and 2, respectively, and were not affected by allowance. In Experiment 1, the herbage quality was high [0·50 of leaf and 116 g CP kg–1 organic matter (OM)] for a tropical forage, whereas in Experiment 2, the quality of the herbage (0·27 of leaf and 73 g CP kg–1 OM) was lower. These differences were reflected in differences in intake and digestibility in the two experiments.
The experimental tropical Dichanthium spp. swards can have intake characteristics similar to those of a temperate sward.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate whether bovine faeces could replace rumen liquor collected from fistulated sheep in the determination of organic matter digestibility (OMD) of forages in vitro . The first experiment compared two inocula that had been prepared by mixing 83 and 333 g of cattle faeces with 1 litre of artificial saliva according to the first stage of the in vitro technique of Tilley and Terry ( Journal of the British Grassland Society, 18, 104–111, 1963). Inocula made from 333 g of faeces gave higher values of OMD than that prepared from 83 g of faeces and was used in subsequent studies. When a 48-h acid pepsin digestion, the second stage of the Tilley and Terry (1963 ) technique, was included, the OMD values and the ease of filtering of undigested residues were increased. The second experiment compared digestibility determined with inocula produced from faeces with that produced from rumen liquor. The OMD of a ryegrass hay determined with an inoculum prepared from faeces was 0·468 compared with 0·528 when using an inoculum prepared from rumen liquor. The third experiment investigated the accuracy of estimating the OMD of eight contrasting forages determined using rumen liquor from three sheep ( y ) and faeces from two cows ( x ). All regressions were significant ( P  < 0·001) and had residual standard deviations (r.s.d.) of between ±0·019 and ±0·022. The final study compared faeces collected from cattle fed with either hay or concentrates. The OMD of forage was higher from the hay-fed animals, but the r.s.d. values of the regressions were similar. It was concluded that cattle faeces shows potential as an alternative to rumen liquor collected from rumen-fistulated sheep for use in the in vitro digestibility assay of forages.  相似文献

Herbage characteristics were monitored over 3 years (1985–1987) in three perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties as grass/only (200 kg N ha−1) and grass/clover ( Trifolium repens L.) (75 kg N ha−1) swards when continuously stocked with sheep. Although mean total annual herbage production was similar from the grass varieties, growth of Aurora, a very early-flowering variety, was higher than that of Aberystwyth S23 and Meltra (tetraploid) late-flowering types in spring. Herbage production from grass-only swards was 15% higher than from grass/clover swards.
In vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) of Aurora and Meltra was 34 g kg −1 and 26 g kg −1 higher ( P < 0·01) than that of S23. Averaged over varieties, the OMD of grass/clover was 25 g kg −1 higher ( P < 0·05) than grass-only during the post-weaning period. Individual lamb digestible organic matter intake (DOMI) was 22% higher ( P < 0·05) on grass/clover than on grass-only during this period. Water-soluble carbohydrates content of Aurora was 42% higher ( P < 0·001) than that of both Meltra and S23.
Herbage characteristics were related to lamb performance reported previously. Lamb production was positively correlated with DOMI. However, the magnitude of differences in lamb performance between treatments was much greater than the extent of differences detected in herbage characteristics.  相似文献

The intake and performance of cashmere goats grazing sown swards   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
An experiment was conducted to examine the relationships between sward surface height and the intake and liveweight gain of lactating female goats and their single kids and of 12-month-old castrated male goats continuously grazing grass pasture. Herbage intake was measured using the n -alkane marker technique. Goats grazed the experimental area from May to August at nominal sward heights of 3–4, 5–6, 7–8 and 9–10 cm. Sward heights achieved were variable but were consistently ranked in treatment order.
The herbage intake of females [57-140 g DM (kg LW0.75)−1 d−1] and castrates [26-88 g DM (kg LW0.75)−1 d−1] increased linearly with sward height over the range 3.2-11.0 cm. The liveweight change of females and castrates reflected the pattern of change in sward height.
The herbage intake of kids [17-41 g DM (kg LW0·75)−1 d−1] was not related to sward height, but there was a consistent increase in liveweight gain with sward height from 98 to 129 g d−1. The herbage intake of kids did not increase with age with means of 25–29 g DM (kg LW 0·75 d−1 for kids aged 9–17 weeks.
There was evidence that all classes of goat selected green leafy material of high digestibility.  相似文献

Two experiments are reported. In the first experiment the amino acid compositions of rumen bacteria and protozoa isolated from sheep given a diet of grass silage were compared with those taken from sheep given a diet of hay and barley; four sheep were assigned to each diet. There were no significant differences (P<0·05) between diets in the amino acid compositions of the microbial fractions and bacterial contents of α-ɛ-diaminopimelic acid were also similar for both diets.
In the second experiment the digestion of a grass silage and barley diet (65:35; 135 g CP (kg DM)-1) was studied using four non-lactating Ayrshire cows fitted with cannulae in the rumen and in the proximal duodenum. The mean N intake was 154 g d-1 and the corresponding duodenal flow was 126 ± 10 g d-1 indicating that 0·21±0·07 of the N intake was absorbed between the mouth and the duodenum. The mean rumen NH3-N concentration was high, 297 g litre-1, and the mean rate of microbial protein synthesis in the rumen was low, 17 g microbial N (kg OM apparently digested in the rumen)-1. There was a low content of bacterial N in the non-ammonia N at the duodenum (mean proportion 0·52±005) and low concentrations of methionine and lysine in the duodenal digesta protein. The results are discussed in relation to previously published data on the digestion of silage diets in sheep and to the utilization of silage diets for milk production in the cow.
It is concluded that with silage diets the supply of methionine and lysine to the duodenum is likely to be low because of the low rates of microbial protein synthesis in the rumen and that in cows those two amino acids may be limiting for milk production.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the relationship between sward surface height, herbage intake and liveweight gain in beef cattle grazed on pasture. In Experiment 1, two 'animal types' (18 Charolais × Angus steers and 18 Friesian bulls) were continuously grazed for 22 days during the late autumn on replicated swards maintained at sward surface heights of 6, 10 and 15 cm. Herbage intakes, assessed from the faecal concentration of chromium delivered from an intraruminal controlled release capsule and the in vitro digestibility of hand-plucked herbage samples, were curvilinearly related to sward height (r = 0·76, p <0·0·01). Average liveweight gains were 0·02, 0·61 and 1·31 kg d-1 ( P <0·05) and increased linearly ( r = 0·84, P <0·001) with sward height. The maintenance organic matter intakes of the steers and bulls, with initial mean (± s.e.) live weights of 225 ± 15 kg and 172 ± 15 kg respectively, were estimated to be 3·6 and 3·5 kg d-1 respectively. In Experiment 2 (spring) 36 cattle, including 35 of those used in Experiment 1, were reallocated to sward heights of 5, 10 and 15 cm using the same design as for Experiment 1. Average liveweight gains were 0·94, 1·57 and 1·68kg d-1 ( p 0·05) and were curvilinearly related to sward height ( r = 0·093, p <0·05). Maintenance intakes could not be reliably extimated for the cattle in Experiment 2 because few animals had liveweight gains close to zero. These trials confirm that liveweight gain in continuously grazed finishing steers and bulls increases with sward surface height to maximum of 8–10cm with spring ryegrass/white clover pastures while, in autumn, swards of 12–15cm height are required to achieve maximum performance.  相似文献

In a two-year experiment, three silages were prepared from herbage treated either with an inoculant at 1·25 × 105 organisms (g fresh material (FM))−1. formic acid (850 g kg−1) at 4 1 (t FM)−1, or no additive (untreated). In Experiment 1, unwilted and in Experiment 2, wilted silages were investigated and had mean dry matter (DM) and water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentrations at ensiling of 171 g kg−1 and 17·6 g (kg FM)−1 and 263 g kg−1 and 25·1 g (kg FM)−1, respectively. In Experiment 1, 45 and in Experiment 2, 54 individually fed cows were used to evaluate the silages in three-treatment, randomized-block design experiments. During weeks 4-12 of lactation the cows were offered silages ad libitum and during weeks 15-26 a constant amount of silage was fed. There were few major differences in chemical composition of the resulting silages. Formic acid had no effect on silage digestibility. Inoculant treatment increased digestibility when the grass had been wilted. The use of formic acid resulted in increased silage DM intake of 9% during weeks 4-12 of lactation in Experiment 1 but not in Experiment 2. The inoculant gave no increase in silage DM intake over the control in Experiment 1 but increased silage DM intake by 7% in Experiment 2. There was no significant response in milk yield to formic acid. In Experiment 2 the response in milk yield to inoculant treatment was significant both in weeks 4-12 of lactation (4%) and in weeks 15-26 of lactation (5%). It is concluded that the response in milk yield to the use of a specific inoculant appears to be mediated through increased intake of metabolizable energy (ME).  相似文献

Voluntary intake and in vivo digestibility of herbage harvested from five indigenous communities– Agrostis-Festuca, Nardus and Molinia grasslands and Eriophorum vaginatum- and Trichophorum caespitosum -dominated varieties of blanket bog–and also from sown Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens swards were measured over two years. First growths of each sward were harvested at three stages of maturity and stored at — 20°C before feeding. Voluntary intake was measured while feeding ad libitum to 15% excess of the intake on the previous day and digestibility when feeding at 80% of voluntary intake.
There was a common positive relationship (r2= 0·86***) between intake (adjusted for year of feeding, range 72·8–16·7 g organic matter (kg LW)0·75 d-1) and organic matter digestibility (range 0·796–0·371), covering Lolium perenne and most of the indigenous communities. However, there were significant differences between the regressions of intake on the concentration of neutral detergent fibre for ryegrass and the indigenous communities, and also between the regressions for individual communities.
The results demonstrated the general value of organic matter digestibility as a predictor of intake potential, and the high digestibility and intake potential of immature vegetation from the grass and grass heath communities.  相似文献

Field-wilted lucerne was chopped with a forage harvester at 33 ± 1·5, 43 ± 2·0 and 54 ± 1·8% dry matter, treated and ensiled in laboratory silos during four cuttings in each of two years. Treatments were control (C), sugar addition at 2% of fresh weight (S), inoculum applied at 3 × 105 bacteria g−1 herbage (I), and sugar and inoculum combined (IS). Duplicate silos were opened and analysed after 1, 2, 3, (4 or 5), 7, 14 and 60 d of fermentation. The initial rate of proteolysis of lucerne protein decreased with increasing dry matter (DM) content of the lucerne, and was not influenced by the year, cutting or silage treatment. Inoculation increased ( P <0·05) the rate of pH decline for all silage dry matters, and shortened the lag time prior to pH decline with 33 and 43% dry matter silages. Sugar addition had no effect on rate of pH decline or lag time. Inoculation and sugar addition both lowered final pH, acetic acid, ammonia (NH3), free amino acids (FAA) and soluble non-protein N (NPN) in silages ( P <0·01) and increased lactic acid content with 33 and 43% dry matter silages. Only inoculation was beneficial at 54% DM with no difference between I and IS. The influence of forage characteristics (epiphytic lactic acid bacteria, buffer capacity and sugar:buffer capacity ratio) on treatment effectiveness varied with dry matter content.  相似文献

The effect of herbage allowance on the herbage intake and performance of ewes and their twin lambs at pasture was investigated. Daily herbage allowances of 40,80.120 and 160 g organic matter (OM) kg-1 ewe live weight, based on herbage mass measured to ground level, were offered during the first 12 weeks of lactation.
The sheep were grazed rotationally around four paddocks of a perennial ryegrass pasture for 7-day periods and herbage mass, extended tiller length and digestibility of the herbage consumed by the animals were estimated. Herbage intake by the ewes was estimated during weeks two to twelve and live weights were recorded weekly: during the last two weeks of the experiment grazing behaviour of one ewe on each treatment was recorded continuously.
Herbage intakes by the ewes (164, 1–81, 2–42 and 268 ± 0153 kg d-1) and live weight gains of the lambs (202, 245, 274 and 300 ± 7–3 g d-1) increased with increasing herbage allowances. Herbage intakes by the ewes and growth rates of their lambs increased up to a herbage allowance which was over five times the amount of herbage eaten by the ewes.
As the animals reduced herbage mass and sward height, biting rates by the ewes during grazing increased by 4 (± 0·08) bites min-1 cm-1 and masticating rates decreased. Mastications reached a maximum of 90 (± 3·5) min-1 at a sward surface height of 9 cm.  相似文献

Herbage characteristics were studied over years 4–6 (1988–90) in three perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties as grass-only (200 kg N ha-1) and grass/clover ( Trifolium repens L.) swards which received 75kg N ha-1 in 1988 and 0kg N ha-1 in 1989 and 1990 when continuously stocked with sheep. Mean total annual herbage production of Aurora, a very early flowering variety, was 11% more than that of late-flowering Aberystwyth S23 due to 21% higher growth as grass/clover pasture. The grass/clover sward of Meltra, a tetraploid late-flowering variety, out-yielded S23/clover by 17%. Herbage production of grass/clover was 86% of that of grass only in 1988 but only 54% of the grass-only swards averaged for 1989 and 1990.
In vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) of Meltra was 38g kg-1 OM and 27g kg-1 OM higher than that of S23 and Aurora respectively. OMD of grass/clover was 15g kg-1 OM higher than that of grass only during the post-weaning period. Herbage intake was positively correlated with OMD of herbage.
The herbage attributes were related to lamb performance reported previously. Lamb output was positively correlated with intake of digestible organic matter.
Differences between the three varieties in herbage characteristics were greater as grass/clover than as grass-only swards, reflecting their compatibility with white clover. In this respect Meltra was the best and S23 the poorest variety.  相似文献

This paper gives details of a study which has examined the effect of herbage growth type and season on the relationships of digestible organic matter in the dry matter (DOMD) and metabolizable energy (ME) contents measured in vivo to various laboratory measurements including three in vitro estimates of DOMD based on rumen fluid pepsin (RFP), pepsin cellulase (PC) or neutral detergent cellulase (NCD). Seventy herbages harvested over two years and comprising 32 spring primary growths, 14 summer regrowths and 24 autumn growths were used.
For DOMD in vivo , significantly different regression relationships were required for spring and autumn-harvested herbage. Equations based on PC were:
Spring herbage: DOMD (g kg-1 DM) = 436 + 0·501 PC (g kg-1 DM) 2= 76·7%; r.s.d. = 25·4
Autumn herbage: DOMD (g kg-1 DM) = 594 + 0·195 PC (g kg-1 DM) 2= 15·5%; r.s.d. = 23·1
For autumn herbages there were no significant relationships with ME. As with DOMD in vivo the PC method was shown to provide the most accurate relationship with ME concentration of spring herbage. The relationship was:
ME (MJ kg-1 DM) = 6·16 + 0·0094 PC (g kg-1 DM) 2= 69·8%; r.s.d. = 0·57
For both DOMD and ME the relationships for spring herbage based on PC were the only ones which did not differ significantly from those of an earlier study.
It is concluded that even where significant relationships for summer and autumn herbages were developed, the predictors accounted for substantially less of the variability than in spring herbages. This appeared to be largely due to reduced range in the DOMD and ME content in summer and autumn herbages.  相似文献

The herbage intake and performance of set-stocked suckler cows and calves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Groups of eight Hereford × Friesian cows and their South Devon cross calves were set stocked over a 24-week grazing season at 3·23 (low), 3·21 (medium) or 4·24 (high) cows ha-1 together with their calves. For the first 8 weeks only two-thirds of the total area was grazed. Increasing the stocking rate from low to medium reduced daily milk yield and cow and calf liveweight gains by 1·2, 0·24 and 0·29 kg d-1 respectively, and from medium to high by 1·2, 0·24 and 0·23 kg d-1. The main sward factor influencing faecal output and herbage intake was the quantity of organic matter on the pastures but the digestibility of the herbage selected also exerted a significant effect on the intake of cows. Major depressions in the herbage intake of cows occurred once the average sward height fell below 7 cm. Output of calf live weight was 628, 658 and 743 kg ha-1 for the 3 stocking rates from low to high, and for cows 246, 179 and 30 kg ha-1. It was concluded that decisions on pasture management should be taken in relation to the cow rather than the calf on set-stocked swards.  相似文献

Over a 24-week period during the 1986 summer, three groups of January- to March-calving dairy cows were either grazed conventionally (G) or grazed between morning and afternoon milkings and housed overnight and offered grass silage (Si) or a straw/concentrate mixture (St) ad libitum. The straw/concentrate mixture contained proportionately, 0-33 long barley straw, 0·28 ground barley, 0·12 soya bean meal, 0·25 molaferm and 0·22 minerals. The metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) contents of the silage fed in weeks 1-8 and weeks 9-24 were 9-5 and 10−6 MJ kg MD−1 and 160 and 191 g kg DM−1 respectively. The straw mix had an ME content of 10−1 MJ kg DM−1 and CP content of 134 g kg DM−1. Partial storage feeding with silage or a straw/concentrate mixture led to a decrease in estimated herbage DM intake. The feeding of the straw/concentrate mixture increased total DM intake, but the estimated total ME intake was similar for treatments G and St. The intakes (kg DM d−1) for treatments G, Si and St were respectively, herbage 11·7,6·8,4·1; total l3·5,13·6,15·0; total ME intake (MJd−1) 163, 155, 163.
Animal performance was, for treatments G, Si and St respectively: milk yield (kg d−1) 19·2, 17·5, 19·1 (s.e.d. 0-87); milk fat content (g kg−1) 36·9, 37·6, 37.1 (s.e.d. 1.22); milk protein content (g kg−1) 35·3, 32·9, 33·4 (s.e.d. 0·76).  相似文献

A study was conducted to explore the possibility of a synergistic effect of an inoculum of lactic acid bacteria and sodium bicarbonate in improving the nutritive value of lucerne silage. Twenty Holstein heifers (live weight 183 ± 9·4 kg) were assigned to four dietary treatments consisting of: lucerne uninoculated or inoculated prior to ensilage and then either unsupplemented or supplemented with NaHCO3 (40 g kg−1 dry matter (DM)). The lucerne silage contained 320 g kg−1 DM and constituted 600 kg−1 diet DM. The animals were fed once daily for 90 d and samples of jugular blood were analysed for plasma ammonia and indices of blood acid-base status. Inoculation of Lucerne reduced ( P <0·01) silage pH but had no other effect on silage composition. In the absence of NaHCO3, liveweight gain and organic matter intake were improved by inoculating lucerne prior to ensilage; however, in the presence of NaHCO3, inoculation reduced growth rate but had no major effect on intake. Dietary treatment did not (P>0·05) affect the concentration of plasma ammonia or measures bf blood acid-base status. The results suggest that NaHCO3 may have nullifled any potential benefit of inoculating lucerne silage to improve its nutritive value for heifers.  相似文献

Comparisons between some aspects of grazing and ruminating behaviour by sheep recorded automatically and by manual observation are reported.
Behaviour was recorded manually and automatically on four swards with surface heights of 3, 6, 9 and 12 cm. The automatic recording method gave significantly higher biting rates (78 v 67 ± 2·4 bites min−1) than manual recording. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. For recordings during ruminating there was no significant difference between the two recording methods.
As sward surface height increased biting rate decreased by 4·6 (± 0.65) and 2·9 (± 0·87) bites min−1 cm−1, and masticating rate increased by 4·5 (± 1·13) and 3·7 (± 0·95) chews min−1 cm−1 for the manual and automatic recording methods respectively.
It is concluded that the automatic recording system gives higher rates for jaw movements during grazing than manual recording but there is little difference between the two methods for activities recorded during ruminating.  相似文献

The fermentation characteristics and chemical composition of 57 first-cut and 30 second-cut samples of grass silages, made in bunker silos on commercial dairy farms in Wales in 1990, and treated with a nominal 61 t−1 of an acid salt-type additive at ensilage, is described. Typical chemical composition of grass cut for ensilage was 156 g kg−1 dry matter (DM) and 28 g kg−1 water soluble carbohydrate (WSC), with 181 g (kg DM) −1 crude protein (CP) and 232 g (kg DM) −1 modified acid detergent fibre (MADF). The effect of additive use was to produce silages with DM 230 g kg−1 pH 3·93, ammonia N 70 g kg−1 total N, with residual WSC 35 g (kg DM) −1, lactic acid 83 g (kg DM) −1, total acids 118 g (kg DM) −1 and butyric acid 0·7 g (kg DM) −1. No significant differences were found between first- and second-cut silages. Silage fermentation was restricted (i.e. lactic acid less than 60 g kg DM−1) in only 20% of the samples.
It is suggested that on commercial farms the application rate achieved may be insufficient to produce a restricted fermentation.  相似文献

A randomized block experiment was conducted to compare unwilted and wilted grass silages and the effects of the feed additive monensin sodium on the silage intake and performance of finishing beef cattle. Two regrowths from a predominantly perennial ryegrass (cv. S24) sward were ensiled either without wilting or after field wilting for 3 d (dry matter (DM) concentrations 161 and 266 g kg−1 respectively). Both silages were treated with formic acid (2·6 and 30 litre t−1 respectively) and were well preserved. The silages were offered ad libitum to forty-eight Charolais-cross cattle (thirty-two steers and sixteen heifers, mean initial live weight 351 kg) for 145 d. All animals received 2·2 kg concentrates per head daily and half of those on each silage treatment received in addition 200 mg monensin sodium per head daily. Silage DM intake was 5.04, 504. 5·48, 5·63 ± 0.134 kg d−l; fasted liveweight gain was 0·69, 0·77. 0·64 and 0·73 ± 0.033 kg d−l and carcass gain was 0·47, 0·50, 0·40 and 0·45 ± 0·020 kg d−1 for the unwilted silage without and with monensin and the wilted silage without and with monensin respectively. It is concluded that wilting grass of low DM concentration for 3 d prior to ensiling reduced the performance of finishing beef cattle below that obtained from well-preserved unwilted silage in spite of a higher DM intake being achieved with the wilted silage. The inclusion of monensin sodium in a silage-based diet increased performance without significantly affecting feed intake.  相似文献

A study is reported on the voluntary intake and digestibility by sheep of five lines of Cenchrus ciliaris when grown as swards and cut at six different stages of growth. Previous studies with C. ciliaris grown in small rows had shown large differences between these lines in grazing preference by cattle. The ranking order for preference wasline31>10 = 23>30 = 36.
When offered singly to sheep in pens the five lines could be divided into three groups according to their voluntary intakes. Lines 10 and 30 had the highest mean daily intakes of 56·1 and 57·6 g (kg W)-0·75 compared with lines 23 and 36 with low mean intakes of 48·5 and 48·6 g (kg W)-0·75. Line 31 was intermediate with a mean intake of 543 g (kg W)-0·.
Mean dry matter digestibility of the five lines ranged from 0·577 to 0·597%. Lines 10 and 30 had the lowest digestibility. The difference in intake between the five lines was positively correlated with their proportion of leaf ( r = 0·97). Low-intake lines (23 and 36) also had the highest proportion of seed head.
It was concluded that selection of C. ciliaris on the basis of preference by cattle in a cafeteria study provided no useful guide to voluntary intake when the different lines were grown, cut, dried, chopped and fed separately to sheep.  相似文献

A second cut of lucerne was wilted to 500 g DM kg−1 and either left untreated (control) or treated with formic acid (4.5 1 fresh forage t−1) or with a commercial inoculum of lactic acid bacteria (105 colony forming units (cfu) g forage−1). The forages were ensiled in 2-t capacity silos for 8 months, and later fed to six lambs (mean initial weight 27.7 ±1.60 kg) in a 3x3 duplicated Latin square with 27-d periods. Portions of the untreated and additive-treated forages were also ensiled in laboratory silos at 25 ° C for intervals up to 42 d. Results from the laboratory silos showed that the major increase in ammonia-N in silage occurred between 40 h and 7 d of fermentation; during this period, both formic acid and the inoculant produced a smaller increase in ammonia-N, than did the control. The pH of inoculated silage declined from 5.74 to 4.57 in 7 d, but it took 14 d for the pH of the control silage to fall below 5.0. Formic acid treatment immediately reduced the silage pH from 5.74 to 5.10 ( P < 0·01); the pH then remained unchanged until 21 d, after which it decreased slightly. When compared with control, lambs fed formic acid-treated silage consumed more ( P < 0·05) digestible organic matter; the response was associated with a trend towards decreased concentration of ammonia in plasma. Inoculation of lucerne silage did not ( P < 0·05) affect voluntary intake but increased ( P <0.05) apparent digestibility of fibre and tended to increase N retention.  相似文献
