This study was undertaken to evaluate the use of brewers yeast and nucleotides as a growth promoter and to provide vibriosis resistance for the juveniles of gastropod spotted babylon (Babylonia areolata). Juvenile spotted babylon (0.3 g initial weight) were randomly distributed at a density of 50 snails in 45-L aquaria and fed a basic diet (40% crude protein) containing two incremental levels of 1 and 2% brewers yeast and nucleotides singularly for 4 months. After the feeding trial, snails from each treatment were challenged by pathogenic bacteria Vibrio alginolyticus given by intramuscular injection and kept under observation for 5 days to record clinical signs and daily mortality rates. Results indicated that the snails fed with diets supplemented with brewers yeast or nucleotides exhibited significantly greater growth than those fed the basic diet (P < 0.05) and significantly better food conversion ratios compared to snails fed the basic diet (P < 0.05). These results indicated that dietary supplementation of brewers yeast or nucleotides, at least at the tested dosages, enhanced spotted babylon growth. Supplementing the diet with 1% brewers yeast promises to provide appropriate resistance to V. alginolyticus.  相似文献

A 120-day feeding trial was designed to determine the effects of different dietary protein and lipid levels and protein to energy ratio (P:E) on growth performance and feed utilization of hatchery-reared juvenile spotted babylon, Babylonia areolata, cultured under a flow-through seawater system. Six diets were formulated to contain three protein levels (18, 28, and 36%) and two lipid levels (10 and 15%) in a 3 × 2 factorial design with three replicates to provide six different dietary P:E ratios (50.17, 49.09, 68.50, 65.85, 88.66, and 85.36 mg protein/kcal). Each replicate was stocked with 50 snails (0.12 + 0.01 g, initial weight) and fed to satiation once daily. The results showed that survival was above 96% at the end of the feeding trial in all groups and was not affected by either dietary protein level or dietary lipid level. The highest significant (P < 0.05) growth and feed utilization were observed for juveniles fed diet with a P:E ratio of 88.66 kcal g−1 diet. With respect to dietary protein and lipid levels, the highest (P < 0.05) values for growth and feed efficiency were observed for snails fed a diet containing 36% protein level and the same trend was observed for snails fed a diet with 10% lipid level. This results indicated that the diet containing 36% protein and 10% lipid level with a dietary P:E ratio of 88.66 mg protein/kcal would be suitable for optimum growth and feed utilization of B. areolata juveniles.  相似文献

A growth trial was conducted to determine the effects of dietary carbohydrate level on growth performance, feed utilization and metabolism of juvenile spotted babylon. Six isonitrogenous and isoenergetic experimental diets (48% crude protein and 15 MJ kg− 1 diet) using wheat starch as the carbohydrate source, were formulated to contain six carbohydrate levels. Triplicate groups of 45 animals (initial average weight, 168.39 ± 0.69 mg) were stocked in 120-l tanks and fed to apparent satiation twice daily for 10 weeks. Growth performance and feed utilization were significantly affected by dietary carbohydrate level. Maximum weight gain and specific growth rate occurred at 20% dietary starch inclusion, survival and soft body to shell ratios were not significantly different among diets. There were significant differences in protein, lipid, moisture and glycogen content in soft body. Glycogen content in soft body was positively correlated with dietary starch level. The activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase were significantly affected by dietary starch level, with both peaking in the 20% treatment; however, there were no significant differences in 6-phosphofructokinase activity in any treatment. Quadratic regression analysis of weight gain against dietary starch level indicated that the optimal dietary carbohydrate level for maximum weight gain of juvenile spotted babylon is 27.1% of dry diet.  相似文献

Juvenile spotted babylon (Babylonia areolata) and sea bass (Lates calcarifer) were cultured in 11.5‐m3 indoor rearing tanks supplied with flow‐through of ambient natural sea water over a 120‐day experiment. Each species, stocked at the following densities for the following treatments, was tested with three replicates per treatment: 5000 B. areolata per tank (Treatment 1); 200 L. calcarifer per tank (Treatment 2); and 5000 B. areolata plus 200 L. calcarifer per tank (Treatment 3),. The average growth (length and weight), feed conversion ratio and total production of spotted babylon and sea bass from Treatment 3 were not significantly different from those of Treatment 1 and 2 (P > 0.05). Average survival rates for both spotted babylon and sea bass exceeded 95% for all treatments.  相似文献

A 120-day feeding trial was conducted to determine growth, feeding efficiency, and biochemical composition of juvenile spotted babylon Babylonia areolata (initial mean weight of 1.48 ± 0.06 g) fed on conventional trash fish and a formulated moist diet in a flow-through grow-out system. The snails readily accepted the formulated moist diet and showed good growth and survival during the trial. There were no significant differences in specific growth rate, feeding efficiency, and survival between the snails fed on trash fish or the formulated moist diet. At the end of the experiment, biochemical analysis of the snail flesh showed significant differences in flesh quality, with the snails fed on trash fish having a significantly higher crude protein compared to those fed on the formulated diet, but there was little difference in crude lipid content. Whole body tissue of snails fed on trash fish had significantly higher total amino acid, essential amino acid, and non-essential amino acid levels compared to those fed the formulated diet. This study showed that the formulated moist diet can be readily used for B. areolata growout for maximizing growth, survival, and feeding efficiency; however, further research is needed to improve the flesh quality particularly amino acid and fatty acid levels before its suitability for B. areolata is assured.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using seaweeds as biofilters in a hatchery scale recirculating aquaculture system for juvenile spotted babylons (Babylonia areolata). Two seaweeds Gracilaria salicornia and Caulerpa lentillifera were used with three initial biomass levels of each species (280, 560 and 840 g wet weight m−3). Spotted babylon with an average initial shell length of 1.32 ± 0.01 cm and body weight of 0.37 ± 0.01 g was used with a stocking density of 300 snails m−2. The experiment was carried out in triplicate over a period of 120 days. Results showed that seawater quality (water temperature, conductivity, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and total suspended solids) gradually changed with no significant differences between treatments throughout the experimental period, except alkalinity, total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite–nitrogen, nitrate–nitrogen and phosphate. Growth rates in weight and shell length of the spotted babylon cultured in all seaweed treatments used were not significantly different between seaweeds and density treatments, but significant differences in final survival rate of the spotted babylon were found between seaweed and density treatments. Growth rate and biomass gain of C. lentillifera were significantly higher than those of G. salicornia for all stocking density treatments. This study shows that Gracilaria salicornia and Caulerpa lentillifera can be used as biofilters for regulating water quality in a recirculating culture system for spotted babylons.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of growing out hatchery‐reared spotted babylon juvenile (Babylonia areolata) in earthen ponds. The growth, survival and water quality for monoculture of spotted babylon were compared with the two polyculture trials with sea bass (Lates calcarifer) or milkfish (Chanos chanos). This study provided good results for growth and survival of spotted babylon in earthen ponds. The mean body weight gain of snails held in the monoculture was 5.39±0.08 g, and 4.07±0.16 and 4.25±0.11 g for those held in the polyculture with sea bass or milkfish respectively. Food conversion ratios (FCR) were 2.69, 2.96 and 2.71 for snails held in the monoculture and polyculture with sea bass and milkfish, respectively, and the final survival rates were 84.94%, 74.30% and 81.20% respectively. There were no significant differences in each parameter of water quality among the treatments but significant differences among the culture period were present (P<0.05). Salinity and total alkalinity showed the greatest changes during the culture period for all treatments. Seawater temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrite–nitrogen and ammonia–nitrogen gradually changed over the culture period for all the treatments. The present study indicated the technical feasibility for monoculture and polyculture of B. areolata to marketable sizes in earthen ponds.  相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects of dietary Schizochytrium meal supplementation on survival, growth performance, activities of digestive enzymes and fatty acid composition in Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) larvae (initial body weight 4.21 ± 0.10 mg). Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated to contain graded levels of Schizochytrium meal: 0% (S0, the control diet), 2% (S2), 4% (S4) and 6% dry matter (S6). Results showed that there was no significant difference in survival of shrimps among dietary treatments (> 0.05). Shrimps fed diets with 2% and 4% microalgae meal had significantly higher specific growth rate (SGR) than that of shrimps fed diets with 0% and 6% microalgae meal, and no significant differences were observed between shrimps fed diets with 2% and 4% microalgae meal (> 0.05). Activity of trypsin in the pancreatic and intestinal segments, and activity of amylase in the pancreatic segments were not significantly affected by dietary microalgae meal levels (> 0.05). Specific activities of both alkaline phosphatase and leucine‐aminopeptidase in intestine and purified brush border membrane of intestine were significantly higher in shrimps fed diet with 2% microalgae meal (< 0.05). There were no significant differences in C18:2n‐6, n‐3 fatty acids, n‐6fatty acids, PUFA and n‐3/n‐6 in muscle samples among dietary treatments. C16:1n‐7, C18:1n‐9, MUFA, C18:3n‐3 and C20:5n‐3 decreased, however, C20:4n‐6 increased in the muscle as dietary microalgae meal level increased. In conclusion, 4% Schizochytrium meal in microdiets of shrimps can improve growth performance and may be a valuable additive in the microdiets of shrimps.  相似文献

A growth experiment was conducted to determine the effect of supplementing dietary calcium in fish meal‐based diets on the growth of cultured soft‐shelled turtle Pelodiscus sinensis. Juvenile soft‐shelled turtles of 4.1 g mean body weight were fed nine diets containing two levels of phosphorus (2.7% or 3.0%) and analysed calcium levels ranging from 4.7% to 6.6% for 10 weeks. The growth of the turtles was enhanced when inorganic calcium was added to the diets. The weight gain of the turtles fed the control diet containing calcium solely from fish meal was the lowest among the test groups, and was significantly lower than those fed the diet containing 5.7% calcium at the 3.0% phosphorus level (P<0.05). Feed conversion and protein efficiency ratios were not affected by different dietary treatments. Whole‐body moisture and crude protein contents of turtles were not affected by different dietary treatments. The body ash of turtles fed 3.0% phosphorus diets tended to be higher than turtles fed 2.7% phosphorus diets. The body calcium to phosphorus ratio of turtles fed 3.0% phosphorus diets was greater than that of turtles fed diets containing 2.7% phosphorus. Supplementation of Ca in a fish meal‐based practical diet is required for the optimum growth of soft‐shelled turtles.  相似文献

An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the potential of partial replacement of fish meal with rendered animal protein blend (APB) [meat and bone meal (MBM): expanding blood meal (EBM) = 4 : 1] in the diet of juvenile Chinese soft‐shelled turtle Pelodiscus sinensis. Seven isonitrogenous and isoenergetic practical diets replacing 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% fish meal protein by APB were formulated. Weight gain, feed efficiency, protein efficiency and the apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of dry matter and gross energy in the experimental diets all exhibited no significant difference (> 0.05) when dietary fish meal was replaced for 0–40%, but decreased significantly (< 0.05) with further increasing substitution levels. However, relative feed intake, ADC of lipid as well as the contents of whole‐body moisture, protein, lipid and ash all showed little differences (> 0.05) among all the treatments. Nitrogen retention and the ADCs of protein and most amino acids all decreased significantly (< 0.05) when fish meal was substituted by more than 30%. The results indicated that fish meal in the practical diet of juvenile Chinese soft‐shelled turtle could be replaced by 30–40% using a combination of MBM and EBM without negative effects on growth performance, nutrients digestibility and body composition.  相似文献

Yeast fermentation integrated with water soaking was applied as a method to reduce the levels of some anti‐nutritional factors in canola meal. The procedure completely eliminated glucosinolates and it reduced phytic acid content by 18%. It also led to increase of 9% of crude protein and 8–32% of some minerals in the meal. A 60‐day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate replacement of dietary soybean meal protein with yeast‐fermented canola meal for Nile tilapia at ratios of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% respectively. Three groups of fish with an initial weight of 10 g were fed with each diet twice a day to an apparent satiation. The results showed that there were non‐significant differences (P > 0.05) in growth, survival rate, feed intake and feed conversion ratio for all fish fed with the test diets. However, replacement with 75 and 100% levels significantly reduced (P < 0.05) protein efficiency ratio and nutrient digestibility of protein, lipid, ash, Ca, Mg and P of fish compared with the lower levels. The low retention of protein, lipid, ash, Ca, Mg and P were also observed. These effects seemed to be related to an increased dietary phytic acid.  相似文献

This article examines the economic considerations involved in the production of spotted babylon (Babylonia areolata) in Thailand. A financial analysis of the construction and operating costs of a pilot commercial production of spotted babylon of marketable sizes is provided, based upon proven practical techniques and production data for a flow‐through growout system. The investment required for a spotted babylon growout hatchery producing 990 kg per year is estimated to be US$4528.8. The annual cost of operating such a hatchery is estimated to be US$4624.1. The cost of producing 990 kg of marketable‐size spotted bablyon with a survival rate of 95% is estimated to be US$4.91 per kg of snails produced. Cash flow analysis showed that a constant selling price of US$5.8 kg?1 results in positive cash flow by year 4. The proposed enterprise is marginally feasible if cost can be considerably reduced by targeting production and integrating hatchery and growout operations.  相似文献

The effects of feeding regimes on the growth, survival and feed conversion of hatchery-reared juvenile spotted babylon Babylonia areolata (Link) were assessed. Six continuous and discontinuous feeding regimes were fed at satiation to triplicate groups of snails in 200-L flowthrough (3.0 L h–1) indoor rectangular tanks for 180 days. Shell length growth rates of juvenile B. areolata did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) between the various feeding treatments. Body weight gain and feed conversion of snails were not significantly different between various feeding treatments, nor were there significant differences in mean survival between any of the feeding treatments.  相似文献

An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing fish meal with soybean meal (SBM) on growth, feed utilization, and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) excretion of juvenile Pseudobagrus ussuriensis (initial average weight 0.50 ± 0.00 g). Seven isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated to contain SBM to replace fish meal protein at 0% (S0), 10% (S10), 20% (S20), 30% (S30), 40% (S40), 50% (S50) and 60% (S60) respectively. To investigate the effects of supplementation with crystalline amino acid to balance diet S60, one diet was formulated to add 0.30% methionine (SM60). The results showed that there was no significant difference in weight gain among fish fed S0, S10, S20, S30 and S40 diets, however, a significant reduction in this variable occurred when 50% and 60% of fish meal protein was replaced by SBM (P < 0.05). Apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, crude protein and phosphorus of diets were affected by dietary SBM levels. N and P excretion indicate that fish meal replacement by SBM led to an increase in N excretion, but led to a reduction in P excretion. No differences were detected in growth, feed utilization and N and P excretion between fish feed diets S60 and SM60. The results of this study show that 40% of fish meal protein could be replaced by SBM in diets of juvenile P. ussuriensis without having a significant negative effect on growth or feed efficiency, but that higher dietary SBM levels reduce fish performance.  相似文献

To determine a suitable culture environment to maximize growth and survival, the hatchery‐reared juvenile spotted babylon, Babylonia areolata, were held in plastic rearing tanks at four calcium carbonate additions of 0, 100 and 300 g tonne?1, and four water exchange regimes of 0‐, 15‐, 30‐ and 60‐day intervals in a recirculating grow‐out system for 120 days. The results clearly showed that growth was greatest between water exchange regimes of 15‐ and 30‐day intervals and all calcium carbonate additions, with water exchange regimes of 0‐ and 60‐day intervals resulting in poor growth. Final survival was highest between water exchange regimes of 15‐ and 30‐day intervals, and all calcium carbonate additions, with water exchange regimes of 0‐day intervals and all calcium carbonate additions resulting in high mortalities. This study showed that water exchange regimes had a stronger influence on the growth of juvenile B. areolata than calcium carbonate additions. It is recommended that B. areolata juveniles be maintained within the water exchange regimes range of 15–30‐day intervals and at calcium carbonate additions between 0 and 500 g tonne?1, providing optimum conditions for production of this species in a recirculating grow‐out system.  相似文献

An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted to quantify the dietary l ‐lysine requirement of juvenile Chinese sucker with an initial weight of 1.81 ± 0.04 g reared in indoor flow‐through and aerated tanks. Six isonitrogenous and isoenergetic practical diets were formulated to contain graded levels of lysine (1.23%, 1.80%, 2.39%, 2.98%, 3.56% and 4.18% dry matter) at 0.6% increments from dietary ingredients and crystalline l ‐lysine. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 30 fish each and was fed to apparent satiation by hand three times a day (09:00, 13:00 and 17:00 hours) for 8 weeks. There were significant differences in growth performance and feed utilization among the treatments. Weight gain (WG), specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio (PER) significantly increased with increasing lysine levels up to 2.39% of diet (< 0.05) and remained nearly the same thereafter (> 0.05). Feed efficiency was the poorest for fish fed the lowest lysine diet (< 0.05) and showed no significant differences when dietary lysine level increased from 2.39% to 4.18%. The N retention (% N intake) significantly increased with dietary lysine level but did not attain a plateau (< 0.05). Survival could not be related to dietary treatments. Whole body protein increased (< 0.05) and whole body lipid decreased (< 0.05) with increasing dietary lysine level. The condition factor and hepatosomatic index were significantly affected by dietary lysine levels, however, viscersomatic index, whole body moisture and ash did not differ significantly among dietary treatments. Broken‐line analysis on the basis of WG and PER showed that dietary lysine requirements of juvenile Chinese sucker were 2.43% and 2.40% dry diet (5.52% and 5.45% dietary protein) respectively. Based on the ideal protein approach and the A/E ratios determined from muscle amino acid profile an estimation of the EAA requirements of Chinese sucker juveniles were calculated.  相似文献

Feeding trials were conducted to determine the dietary level of yeast extract (YE) for replacing dietary fish meal for evaluating whether yeast extract was superior to intact yeast as an alternative protein source for shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. The basal diet (control, D0, containing 25% fish meal), was compared with five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic experimental diets [replacing 15% (D15), 30% (D30), 45% (D45), 60% (D60) or 100% (D100) of the fish meal in the basal diet with IYE]. The digestibility, growth and muscle composition of the shrimp were measured. The results showed that all replacement treatments displayed higher apparent digestibility of crude protein than did the control. The trypsinase activity in shrimp hepatopancreas increased significantly, whereas lipase activity decreased as the amount of dietary YE increased. The shrimp treated with D30 diet displayed the highest amylase activity in hepatopancreas. There was no significant difference in the weight gain (WG) and survival of shrimp between the control and the YE replacement treatments. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) increased as the dietary YE increased, and the FCRs of the D60 and the D100 treatments were significantly higher than that of the control (< 0.05). The growth performance among the treatments was closely related to the similarity of the essential amino acids in the diets. There was no significant difference in muscle composition of the shrimp between control and other treatments. In conclusion, up to approximately 45% of the fish meal in shrimp diet can be replaced by yeast extract in the presence of supplemental fish oil, phosphorus and calcium.  相似文献

A 9‐week feeding trial was conducted to estimate the dietary requirement of arginine in juvenile cobia in indoor flow‐through and aerated aquaria. Six isonitrogenous and isoenergetic practical diets were formulated to contain graded levels of arginine ranging from 1.76% to 3.75% (dry weight) at about 0.4% increments replaced by equal proportions of glycine. Survival was not significantly different among dietary treatments. Specific growth rate (SGR) and feed efficiency ratio (FER) increased with increasing dietary arginine up to the 2.96% diet (< 0.05), and thereafter declined. The whole body crude protein content was significantly affected by dietary arginine (< 0.05), while moisture, crude lipid and ash showed no significant differences among dietary treatments. The essential amino acid contents of muscle were not significantly affected by dietary arginine. The serum nitric oxide synthase activities in fish fed diets with arginine from 2.18% to 3.75% were significantly higher than activities in fish fed the diet with 1.76% arginine (< 0.05). On the basis of SGR and FER, the optimal dietary arginine requirements of juvenile cobia were estimated to be 2.85% of the diet (6.20% of dietary protein) and 2.82% of the diet (6.13% of dietary protein), respectively, using second‐order polynomial regression analysis.  相似文献

The present experiment was conducted to determine the dietary total phosphorus requirement of juvenile yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco. Six diets with increasing dietary phosphorus concentration (0.43, 0.55, 0.78, 0.90, 1.05 and 1.18% of dry matter, respectively) were fed to triplicate groups of 20 fish each (mean initial body weight, 2.68 ± 0.08 g, mean ± SD) to apparent satiation for 7 weeks. Weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR) increased with increasing dietary phosphorus level from 0.43 to 0.90% and then declined over dietary phosphorus level of 0.90% (P < 0.05). Phosphorus retention increased with increasing dietary phosphorus level from 0.43 to 0.55% and then declined over dietary phosphorus level of 0.55% (P < 0.05). Dietary phosphorus levels significantly influenced whole body crude protein and ash contents (P < 0.05), but not whole body lipid content (P > 0.05). Vertebrae phosphorus content increased with dietary phosphorus level from 0.43 to 0.78% (P < 0.05) and then plateau over the level of 0.78% (P > 0.05). Dietary phosphorus level significantly influenced condition factor, viscerosomatic index and hepatosomatic index (P < 0.05). The relationship between SGR and whole body ash content against dietary phosphorus levels could be expressed as a second-order polynomial equation and the points of 0.89 and 0.85% were considered to be the optimal dietary total phosphorus level, respectively. Based on broken-line analysis of vertebrae phosphorus content, the minimal dietary total phosphorus requirements for maintaining maximum phosphorus storages were estimated to be 0.76% phosphorus.  相似文献

A nutrition trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary lipid levels and supplemental Ulva meal on growth performance, feed efficiency, nutrient utilization, and body composition of juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Four isonitrogenous (CP 40%) diets containing 0% and 5% Ulva meal were formulated to contain 10% (low-lipid; LL) and 20% (high-lipid; HL) crude lipid. Triplicate groups of fish (~10 g) were fed to apparent satiation three times daily for 16 weeks. Fish fed 5% Ulva meal showed an increased growth performance (P < 0.05) compared with fish fed non-Ulva supplemented diets, irrespective of dietary lipid level. In particular, the incorporation of Ulva meal improved specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER). Feeding fish 5% Ulva meal diets resulted in significantly lower carcass lipid content. The results indicate that 5% inclusion of Ulva meal at both dietary lipid levels improves growth performance, feed efficiency, nutrient utilization, and body composition of Nile tilapia.  相似文献
