Ten cases of bacterial endocarditis in the dog were studied by retrospective analysis of case records. Diagnosis of bacterial endocarditis was based on either strict clinical criteria or post mortem examination. A wide spectrum of presenting signs was seen including pyrexia, lameness, epistaxis, haemoptysis and dyspnoea. Haematological and biochemical abnormalities were non-specific and were attributed to the effects of septicaemia, embolism or chronic inflammation. Haemostatic abnormalities and, or, severe dysrhythmias appeared to be associated with a significantly poorer prognosis. Blood cultures were positive in four cases of eight that were cultured. Lesions compatible with bacterial endocarditis were detected in all eight cases that underwent echocardiographic examination. Right-sided vegetations present in two dogs were not detected by echocardiography. Two-dimensional echocardiography is a useful technique for the detection of vegetative endocarditis in the dog and allows rapid therapeutic intervention while blood culture results are pending.  相似文献

Hypothyroidism was believed responsible for peripheral and central neurologic abnormalities in 4 dogs. Clinical signs consisted of abnormalities of gait and postural reactions and dysfunction of multiple cranial nerves in all 4 dogs. Circling, hypermetria, and spontaneous verticle nystagmus were observed in some of the dogs. Hypothyroidism was diagnosed in all 4 dogs on the basis of low resting serum thyroxine concentration and inadequate response to thyroid stimulating hormone. After thyroid hormone supplementation, resolution of neurologic abnormalities was complete in 2 dogs and partial in the other 2 dogs.  相似文献

Over a two-year period, three hundred and forty-five consecutive canine patients of a Cardiology Specialty Clinic were screened for signs of bacterial endocarditis. Ten dogs were identified to have echocardio-graphical signs suggestive of this disease. Their clinical and haematologic data are presented in tables, and the clinical diagnoses were confirmed by necropsies. The echocardiographic signs of bacterial endocarditis and the usefulness of this new technique are discussed.  相似文献

Background: Identification of the bacterial organism in dogs with endocarditis is challenging. Human studies have reported the utility of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify and identify bacterial nucleic acid from infected valvular tissue and blood. Hypothesis/Objectives: We hypothesized that PCR using primers designed to amplify the bacterial 16s gene would identify circulating bacteria in dogs with suspected bacterial endocarditis more consistently than standard blood culture techniques. Animals: Eighteen dogs with suspected bacterial endocarditis based upon clinical and echocardiographic findings. Fifteen clinically normal dogs served as negative controls. Methods: Prospective study of dogs evaluated for suspect endocarditis at 6 veterinary hospitals. A blood sample was drawn from all dogs and evaluated with both a single‐sample PCR and standard 3‐sample blood culture techniques. Results: Blood culture identified noncontaminant bacteria in 6/18 study animals (33%) and 1 control dog; PCR identified noncontaminant bacteria in 7/18 study animals (39%). There were no study animals in which the 2 tests identified different bacteria (κ= 1.0). However, bacteria were identified by both techniques in only 2/18 study animals. When results from both PCR and blood culture were considered together, a noncontaminant bacterial organism was identified in 11/18 study animals (61%). Conclusion and Clinical Importance: The results of this study suggest that although single sample PCR with 16s primers was not more sensitive than blood culture for detection of bacteremia in dogs with suspect endocarditis, performing both techniques simultaneously did increase the likelihood of identification of bacteria in blood.  相似文献

Two dogs with idiopathic chylothorax and 2 dogs with experimentally induced (ie, ligation of the cranial vena cava) chylothorax were treated by intermittent thoracic drainage. Of these 4 dogs, 3 that did not have evidence of renal failure had normal or near-normal serum sodium and potassium concentrations before thoracic drainage began, and all 3 developed repeatedly marked hyponatremia and hyperkalemia during thoracic drainage. Another dog became weak and depressed, ostensibly because of hyperkalemia. Serum sodium and potassium concentrations in 1 dog with spontaneous chylothorax returned to normal after chylothorax resolved and thoracic drainage was stopped. The other 3 dogs died or were euthanatized, and the effect of stopping thoracic drainage could not be evaluated. In 3 dogs in which it was measured, normal-to-high plasma cortisol concentration was observed before and after adrenocorticotropin administration, and 2 dogs also had hyperaldosteronemia. Hyponatremia was hypothesized to be caused by sodium loss via thoracic drainage whereas hyperkalemia may have been multifactorial in origin, but probably was attributable, at least, in part to decreased renal potassium clearance.  相似文献

Multifocal haemorrhages associated with Angiostrongylus vasorum infection were observed in the central nervous system of four dogs with neurological signs including depression, seizures, spinal pain and paresis. In magnetic resonance images the majority of the lesions were isointense or slightly hyperintense in T1-weighted images, hyperintense in T2-weighted images and hypointense in T2*-weighted (gradient echo) images, compatible with haemorrhages more than seven days old. Lesions were found in the brain of three of the dogs and in the spinal cord of two. The cerebrospinal fluid contained high concentrations of protein and evidence of erythrophagia. All the dogs had coagulopathy and pulmonary haemorrhage of varying severity. A vasorum larvae were detected in the faeces of each of the dogs. Neural A vasorum was confirmed at postmortem examination in two dogs.  相似文献

Facial dermatosis in four dogs with hyperadrenocorticism   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In hyperadrenocorticism in the dog, cutaneous lesions may include alopecia, thin, hypotonic skin, hyperpigmentation, comedones, calcinosis cutis, secondary bacterial and fungal infections, and demodicosis. Skin lesions affecting only the face have not been reported in reviews of hyperadrenocorticism, nor has the disease been included in the differential diagnoses of facial dermatoses. This report involves 4 dogs with hyperadrenocorticism in which cutaneous signs were limited to the face.  相似文献

The clinical, haematological and pathological features of a case of chronic granulocytic leukaemia (CGL) associated with valvular bacterial endocarditis are described in a nine-year-old male Springer Spaniel. The disease was characterized clinically by lethargy, weight loss, hepatosplenomegaly, anaemia and leucocytosis. Severe thrombocytopenia resulted in preretinal and retinal haemorrhages. A diagnosis of CGL was based on the finding of a hypercellular bone marrow with increased M: E ratio and morphologically abnormal myeloid precursors. The dog terminally became leucopenic and bacteraemic. Necropsy revealed invasion of liver, spleen and bone marrow with a pleiomorphic population of myeloid blast cells, consistent with transition to a blast cell crisis.  相似文献

In a 5-year retrospective study of dogs presenting to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis, there were 31 histologic diagnoses of valvular endocarditis. By polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of embedded valvular tissue, Bartonella organisms were exclusively associated with 6 out of 31 cases (19%). Confirmed Bartonella cases involved the aortic valve alone (five out of six) or in combination with the mitral valve (one of six). Microscopic features of Bartonella endocarditis were compared with valves from non-Bartonella endocarditis and with valvular change unrelated to infectious agents (endocardiosis). Features of Bartonella endocarditis included a combination of fibrosis, mineralization, endothelial proliferation, and neovascularization with variable inflammation. None of these features is specific; however, the combination is distinct both from endocarditis caused by culturable bacteria and from endocardiosis. Ultrastructural analyses revealed both extracellular and intraendothelial bacteria. Clinical history, serology, and PCR are currently necessary to establish an etiologic diagnosis of Bartonella endocarditis.  相似文献

Granulomatous lymphadenopathy, associated with the presence of needle-like refractile particles, was recognised in two dogs. The material was detected in macrophages, either free within the cytoplasm or in membrane-bound lysosomes. By mineral analysis under direct vision in an electron microscope microanalyser (EMMA 4) the particles were found to contain aluminosilicate.  相似文献

Hypercalcemia associated with blastomycosis in dogs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Hypercalcemia that could not be explained by previously recognized causes was detected in 4 dogs with systemic blastomycosis. A variety of malignancies and certain endocrine, metabolic, and renal disorders may cause hypercalcemia, but to our knowledge, no infectious diseases have been associated with hypercalcemia in dogs. Increased production of calcitriol by mononuclear cells was thought to be the mechanism of hypercalcemia in granulomatous disease.  相似文献
