Young (16- to 30-month-old) beef bulls of 6 different genotypes were assessed for production and reproduction traits at different ages and intervals from single-sire mating. Fertility indices, in the form of multiple regression equations using pregnancy rate as the dependent variable, were derived from these assessments using non-orthogonal analyses of variance and covariance. "Among" and "within" genotype fertility indices showed significant correlations with pregnancy rate. "Within" genotype fertility indices showing significant multiple correlations (p less than 0.01) at 11 (r = 0.75), 8 (r = 0.89), 6 (r = 0.86) and 2 (r = 0.80) months prior to mating. It was found that the most important traits to include in the fertility indices were peripheral LH levels following GnRH stimulation, testicular volume, libido and body weight. In general, the fertility indices showed good correlations with bull reproductive performance and were not significantly affected by bull genotype.  相似文献

The knobbed acrosome defect was found at levels of 25 to 100 percent of spermatozoa from 16 of 2054 beef bulls. The incidence of this defect appeared to be particularly high in the Charolais breed. Pedigree analysis of some of the affected Charolais bulls indicated there may be a genetic predisposition for this sperm defect. In eosin-nigrosin stained semen smears the most common form of the abnormality was a flattened or indented apex of the sperm head. A refractile bead at the apex of the sperm head was seen less commonly. Electron microscopy of the spermatozoa from one bull showed that the abnormality was similar to the knobbed sperm defect previously described in Friesian bulls. A breeding trial confirmed that bulls producing spermatozoa with a high incidence of knobbed acrosomes are infertile.  相似文献

Efficacy of ipronidazole against trichomoniasis in beef bulls   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Preputial smegma samples from 195 beef bulls were collected repeatedly and cultured for Tritrichomonas foetus. Seventy-five (38.5%) of these bulls were positive for trichomonads on at least 1 culture. Sensitivity of the culture procedure (number of positive cultures/number of total cultures from known-positive bulls) was 81.6%. Storage of preputial smegma in lactated Ringer's solution at 5 C for 24 hours resulted in a 14% loss of sensitivity. Seventy-three of the 75 infected bulls were available for treatment and were alloted randomly to 2 groups. Bulls in both groups were treated with procaine penicillin (7,000 IU/kg, IM) for 2 days before ipronidazole treatment. Thirty grams of ipronidazole powder was dissolved in 60 ml of sterile water, and was given IM to group 1 bulls. Group 2 bulls were given a similar 30-g ipronidazole solution IM on day 1, and were given 15 g of ipronidazole dissolved in 30 ml of sterile water on days 2 and 3. Efficacy of treatment (ie, negative cultures of preputial smegma for trichomonads for 6 consecutive weeks after treatment) was 92.8% for the 42 bulls treated once and 100% for the 31 bulls treated 3 times.  相似文献

Breeding soundness examination of yearling beef bulls   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Yearling beef bulls were subjected to a breeding soundness examination (BSE) at completion of performance testing programs at 4 locations over 5 years. Of 862 bulls, 80.1% were classified as satisfactory potential breeders, 7.3% as questionable potential breeders, and 12.7% as unsatisfactory potential breeders. Year (P less than 0.01), location (P less than 0.01), and breed (P less than 0.01) affected the percentage of bulls classified as satisfactory; age of the bulls did not affect this percentage. Adjusted mean scrotal circumference (SC) measurements were 31, 33.2, and 34.8 cm for bulls classified as unsatisfactory, questionable, and satisfactory (P less than 0.01), respectively. Of 109 bulls classified as unsatisfactory, 2.8% were so classified because of poor semen quality alone; 41.3% had no ejaculate in 4 separate electroejaculation attempts. Other abnormalities in these 109 bulls included reproductive tract infections (22%), persistent penile frenulum (16.5%), testicular abnormalities (8.3%), fibropapilloma (1.8%), hernia (1.8%), aplastic epididymis (1.8%), penile abnormalities (1.8%), pendulous sheath (0.9%), and eye abnormalities (0.9%). Age had a significant effect on SC in bulls at 3 locations and on percentage of normal cells, primary abnormalities, and secondary abnormalities as well as BSE score at 1 location. Percentage of primary and secondary abnormalities as well as SC were different across years at 2 locations, and percentage of normal and motile cells as well as BSE score were different across years at 1 location. Breed effects were significant for SC, percentage of primary abnormalities, and BSE score at 3 locations and for percentage of normal and motile cells at 1 location.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to study the effect of zeranol implants on growth and sexual development of bull calves. Trial 1 compared the effects of implanting with 72 mg of zeranol at 48 d of age (branding), at 215 d of age, or at both times with nonimplanted control bulls. Implanting at branding resulted in decreased scrotal circumference, testicle weight and proportion of bulls that could produce an ejaculate at 14 mo of age (P less than .01). Implanting at 215 d of age had no effect on any of these traits. Growth rate was not increased by implanting at either time but was decreased (P less than .02) in animals implanted at both times when compared with control bulls. In trial 2, both bulls and steers were implanted with zeranol and compared with nonimplanted control bulls and steers. Thirty-six-milligram implants were given at 21, 103, 260 and 343 d of age. Scrotal circumference, testicle weight and serum testosterone concentrations decreased (P less than .01) and the occurrence of penis abnormalities increased (P less than .01) in implanted bulls compared with control bulls. By the time of slaughter, however, testosterone concentrations were equal in control and implanted bulls; and the difference in scrotal circumference was diminishing. This is interpreted as evidence that as the bulls get older, they can overcome the effect of the implants. Carcass weights were heavier in implanted steers than in control steers but were lighter in implanted bulls than in control bulls (P less than .02). Carcasses of implanted bulls had higher quality scores and more marbling than control bulls, but carcasses of implanted steers had lower quality scores and less marbling than control steers (both interactions, P less than .01). Implanting bulls with zeranol at an early age resulted in restricted sexual development but not in total sterility. Repeated zeranol implants throughout the growing and finishing phase enhanced carcass quality in bulls slaughtered at 14 to 16 mo of age.  相似文献

Premature spiral deviation of the penis was investigated in 1083 British breed beef bulls in 42 herds in Victoria (35) and Western Australia (7) by means of the serving capacity test. The herd prevalence was 60%. The prevalence of the defect at the initial test for all bulls was 10%. The prevalence in 635 polled bulls was 16% compared to a prevalence of 1 % in 448 horned bulls. The breed prevalence and the number of bulls tested per breed was Red Poll 27% (15), Murray Grey 25% (4), Poll Shorthorn 21 % (34), Angus 17% (415), Poll Hereford 10% (167) and Hereford 1 % (448). The difference between the last 2 breed types was highly significant (P<0.001). The prevalence of the defect increased from 0 to 30% over 9 years in one Victorian herd. The age of affected bulls varied from 2 to 11 years with most affected bulls aged from 3 to 6 years. Common ancestry was found between affected bulls in Western Australia, providing circumstantial evidence that it may be an inherited defect. None of the 103 affected bulls examined in this study had suffered obvious injury to the penis or prepuce. Eighty per cent of 56 affected bulls from Victoria had low serving capacity. Four bulls (2 from each state) with moderate to severe spiral deviation of the penis attained pregnancy rates of 43%, 33%, 3% and 3% respectively, in single sire mating trials. Recommendations for culling defective bulls are presented, based on the herd prevalence and severity of the defect in individual bulls.
It is concluded that bulls with moderate to severe spiral deviation of the penis have reduced fertility and remain permanently affected. The serving capacity test is a valuable diagnostic test for this serving defect in unhandled beef bulls. It is a common, although frequently undiagnosed disorder of polled beef breed bulls in Australia.  相似文献

Economic benefits from the use of expected progeny of a sample of beef bulls with genetic evaluations were calculated over an integrated supply chain for combinations of price discounts for intramuscular fat and LM area. Fixed backfat finish and marketing at the point of optimized gross margins were considered. An economic model was used to calculate average expected gross margins for a sample of bulls. Across-breed, age-constant genetic evaluations were used to predict carcass characteristics of progeny including weight, retail yield, intramuscular fat, and LM area, as well as input requirements including feed and housing as a function of time on feed. Proportion of retail cuts affected by price discounts was included in the calculations. Optimizing endpoints did not affect rankings to any extent relative to a fixed end point in this sample of bulls, as a result of fixed endpoints being similar to optimized endpoints for the economic situation considered. However, rank correlations were only 0.63 and 0.71 between rankings for no discount being applied and rankings with discounts for intramuscular fat and LM area, for fixed and optimized endpoints, respectively. We conclude that market prices are necessary considerations in choices of bulls to use in commercial beef production.  相似文献

In the present study, right hind limb bones from 46 12-month-old bulls with no clinical signs were examined to identify and describe lesions that could predispose the stifle and tarsal joints to osteoarthritis. The bulls came from a performance testing station and were slaughtered due to a low index at the end of the testing period 1996-97. Differences in frequency of lesions among breeds as well as the relationship between lesions and growth rate were evaluated. Forty-five (97.8%) of the 46 bulls had lesions in the joints and/or growth plates. Prevalence of lesions was 100% in the Charolais (22/22), the Hereford (8/8), and the Limousin (4/4) breeds, and 85.7% (6/7) in the Simmental breed. The stifle was affected in 37, the tarsus in 33, and the growth plates in 34, of the 46 bulls. Lesions found in the stifle joint were: osteochondrosis of the articular-epiphysical cartilage complex (AECC) (25), subchondral bone cyst of the distal femur (1), fragmentation of the medial intercondylar eminence of the tibia (20), cleft in the distal part of the patellar groove (28), and an avulsion fracture of the lateral condyle together with a partial tear of the cranial cruciate ligament (1). Lesions found in the tarsal joint were: osteochondrosis of the AECC (23), ulcerative lesions of the articular cartilage of the talus (25), and fracture of the medial malleolus (4). Twenty-eight bulls had lesions of osteochondrosis at the AECC and 37 at the growth plates. When osteochondrosis at the AECC and thickening of the growth plates were combined, 44 of the 46 bulls had at least one lesion at the AECC and/or the growth plate. Prevalence of bulls with at least one lesion was similar between breeds, but the number of lesions per bull was significantly higher in Charolais followed by Simmental, Hereford, and Limousin. Number of lesions per bull was significantly correlated with daily weight gain, carcase weight, and the width of the proximal tibial epiphysis. Lesions were statistically independent, indicating that local biomechanical factors within the joints are important in the pathogenesis. In conclusion, we suggest that the high incidence of hind limb osteoarthritis reported in the Swedish beef bull population can be explained by the high prevalence of skeletal lesions found in the present material. The lesions appeared to be related to high growth rate and to the breed.  相似文献

Blood samples were taken from bull calves at two Meat and Livestock Commission performance testing centres, just after weaning at six months of age and at six weekly intervals until the end of the performance test seven months later. Sera were assayed by specific ELISAS for antibodies to bovine herpes virus 1 (BHV1), respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza 3 (Pi3) and adenoviruses A and B. Seroconversions between each sampling were related to the occurrence of clinical respiratory disease using chi-squared (chi 2) and relative risk (RR) analyses. In 294 bulls there were 123 cases of respiratory disease. Seroconversion to bovine respiratory syncytial virus (RR = 4.7, chi 2 = 96.3, P less than 0.001) and adenovirus A (RR = 1.8, chi 2 = 8.9, P less than 0.001) and adenovirus B (RR = 1.9, chi 2 = 5.6, P less than 0.05) were significantly associated with clinical respiratory disease. There was evidence that prior exposure to respiratory syncytial virus (RR = 0.4, chi 2 = 9.8, P less than 0.01) Pi3 (RR = 0.4, chi 2 = 12.8, P less than 0.01) and adenovirus A (RR = 0.7, chi 2 = 7.5, P less than 0.01) conferred some protection against respiratory disease after arrival at the centre. It is concluded that vaccination before weaning, at least against bovine respiratory syncytial virus, would be beneficial.  相似文献

Purebred Angus (n = 96) and Polled Hereford (n = 96) bull calves sired by bulls of either low or high yearling weight performance lines were assigned to either creep-fed or non-creep-fed treatment before weaning for four calf crops. For each breed, after weaning in the fall, half of the calves within each of the four groups were fed a high concentrate diet for 189 d after weaning in a feedlot and the remainder were put on winter temporary pastures (rye or ryegrass) followed by summer grazing on pearl millet and bermudagrass pastures for 329 d after weaning. Dependent variables were ADG for various intervals and the complete test period, weight, height and scrotal circumference at periodic intervals, and weight per day of age at regular intervals during the test. The model included breed, performance line, sire nested within breed and line, year, age of dam, preweaning treatment, postweaning treatment, and two- and three-factor interactions. Age of calf was included as a covariate for weight, height, and scrotal circumference measurements. Line and breed differences generally were significant for weight but not for height. The interaction of primary interest (line by preweaning treatment by postweaning treatment) was not significant. The high growth performance line gained faster than low growth performance line for all intervals and were 45 kg heavier by 189 d after weaning. Preweaning treatment did not affect postweaning ADG but did affect weight per day of age. Creep-fed calves were heavier than non-creep-fed calves and maintained this advantage during the postweaning treatment periods in both the feedlot and pasture. Both preweaning treatment groups had similar ADG after weaning. Angus were 23 kg heavier at weaning than Polled Herefords; however, breed weight means were similar by 16 mo of age. In summary, bulls from different selection lines for growth were identified in feedlot and pasture when adjustments were made for prior management effects. The lack of significant interactions in these data indicates that central test station data, appropriately adjusted, are useful for ranking bulls on genetic merit for growth in feedlot and on pasture.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to determine, at the lung level, whether single or multiple clones of Mannheimia haemolytica are present within a pen during a bovine respiratory disease (BRD) episode. A secondary objective was to assess whether M. haemolytica isolates obtained from nasal swabs (NS) are identical to those isolated deeper within the respiratory tract. Sixteen BRD episodes that naturally occurred in 12 pens of eight to 12 bulls (n = 112) newly-received at three fattening operations were investigated. One hundred and seventy five M. haemolytica isolates were collected from 239 pairs of trans-tracheal aspirations (TTA) and NS performed during these 16 BRD episodes. M. haemolytica isolates were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). PFGE types obtained from NS and TTA were then compared. M. haemolytica was isolated during 14 BRD episodes. Two to three different clones of M. haemolytica were recovered during 10 episodes whereas only one clone was recovered in four episodes. A moderate agreement (kappa = 0.50) between NS and TTA for M. haemolytica isolation was observed. Identical PFGE types were only observed in 77% of matched NS-TTA pairs. The significant within-pen diversity of M. haemolytica during BRD episodes indicates that the disease is not primarily due to the spread of a single virulent clone among cattle and highlights the importance of predisposing factors that enable the resident flora to overcome the cattle's immune system. The results also demonstrate that isolates recovered from NS are not always representative of the isolates present deeper within the respiratory tract.  相似文献

Performance testing started after it was recognized that growth traits were heritable. In the early years of performance testing there was a tendency to feed higher levels of energy for longer periods of time. More recently, the trend has been to feed lower levels of energy for shorter periods. There are still differences in opinion as to the appropriate level of energy to use. Although it is important that the level of energy fed is adequate to correctly establish a bull's ability to gain, it is essential to know that it will pose no risk of impaired spermatogenesis or cause any degree of laminitis. Clinical observations and research on overfeeding clearly show that both libido and spermatogenesis can be impaired by excess energy intake. The damage in 2-year-old bulls can be very extensive and in some animals it may not be reversible. The scant amount of research in yearling bulls indicates that there is considerable potential danger from overfeeding energy as well. Test stations are under used in regard to performing research that would help identify heritable defects that would interfere with the productive and reproductive efficiency of beef cattle. The first performance testing programs emphasized average daily gain from weaning to 1 year of age, so "performance" has traditionally meant rate of gain to most cattle raisers. The term "performance" is now starting to acquire a broader and more inclusive definition. For many breeders, it now includes weight per day of age, which is in part a maternal trait, and some kind of male evaluation for reproductive potential that can also be extrapolated to the female side. One of the first breakthroughs in this regard was to recognize the heritability of testicular size, and that testicular size could be fairly accurately determined by scrotal circumference measurement. It was also found that there was a favorable relationship between larger testicle size and the ability to produce high quality semen. As a result, it became a common practice to include scrotal circumference measurements in the published bull test results. However, many test station patrons were, and still are, content to consider the scrotal circumference measurement alone as an evaluation of a bull's breeding potential. Unfortunately, less than half of the bulls finishing a performance test at ages ranging from 11 to 14 months will be able to produce semen of completely acceptable quality.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

To investigate the influence of physical structure on zootechnical performances, four feeding regimens were evaluated with 52 Belgian Blue double-muscled bulls starting from 327 kg until slaughter (646 kg). All diets were fed ad libitum and consisted of concentrates and maize silage in different ratios. The structural value (SV), currently used in Belgium as an evaluator of physical structure in the diet for dairy cows, amounted to 0.95 (control group), 0.74 and 0.52 per kg dry matter for the treatments with a high (HSV), medium (MSV) and low (LSV) SV, respectively. The fourth group (LSVs) received the same diet as group LSV, but additional straw was provided ad libitum, as a possible corrector for a lack of physical structure. No significant differences were found for growth rate, intake and feed conversion data. However, between 600 and 650 kg, growth rate and intake of group LSV and LSVs tended to be reduced. The influences on the carcass quality were of minor importance. Remarkably, meat tenderness of the LSV group was improved (32.3 N) in comparison (p=0.08) with the other groups (42.6 N). The height of the rumen papillae was not affected by the diets. Histological examination of the ruminal epithelium revealed that the LSV group showed the severest morphological changes. Examination of the cross-sections of the digits showed no influence of the diet on the incidence of laminitis. From these results, it is concluded that maize silage-based rations with a SV of 0.74 provide enough structure for optimal zootechnical performances of finishing Belgian Blue double-muscled bulls.  相似文献

For 28 weeks a feeding experiment was conducted to determine the effects of dietary flavomycin on performance of beef bulls. In the first and second half of the trial, 40 animals (average initial weight 352 kg) had free access to corn silage or beet pulp, respectively, both supplemented with an appropriate concentrate containing 0 or 10 mg/kg of the antibiotic. Daily flavomycin intake was 39 to 46 mg when the animals were on the corn silage diet and 51 to 54 mg when they were fed the beet pulp diet. The animals fed the corn silage-based diet supplemented with flavomycin showed a non-significant improvement of daily gain (1.4%) and feed conversion (2.3%). When the beet pulp-based diet was fed, flavomycin significantly increased daily gain (15.2%, P less than 0.002) and feed conversion efficiency (9.1%, P less than 0.03). For the overall feeding experiment the positive effect of flavomycin feeding was 6.7% on body weight gain (P less than 0.09) and 5.2% on feed conversion (P less than 0.13). Flavomycin did not affect carcass yield of beef bulls. Also the effect of flavomycin on diet digestibility was studied in wethers fed a mixture of beet pulp and concentrate, containing 0 or 10 ppm flavomycin. No significant effect from the antibiotic on digestion of dry matter, crude protein, fibre, fat, ash and N-free extract was observed.  相似文献
