A 5-year-old male neutered ferret (Mustela putorius) and a 2-year-old male neutered ferret were evaluated for fast growing immobile swellings involving the left hock and the right scapula, respectively. In both cases, serum chemistry was unremarkable and a complete blood count demonstrated mild anemia. In case 1, radiographic evaluation demonstrated increased soft tissue density in the region of the distal tibia and fibular tarsal bone. A fine-needle aspirate demonstrated atypical mesenchymal cells, and an incisional biopsy revealed irregular partly mineralized proliferations of cartilage consistent with chondrosarcoma. Computed tomography was performed, demonstrating attachment of the mass to the distolateral tibial epiphysis. A limb-sparing surgery was performed; however, 5 months following resection local reoccurrence was noted. At 18 months, the ferret underwent a left hind limb amputation. No sign of metastatic disease was reported at 27 months. In case 2, radiographic evaluation demonstrated a poorly organized mineralized soft tissue mass extending from the right acromion to the area surrounding the neck of the scapula. Microscopic evaluation of an incisional biopsy revealed a chondrosarcoma. A forequarter amputation was performed. The ferret died 4 years later with no evidence of local recurrence or the development of metastatic disease. These 2 cases represent the first reports of chondrosarcoma in the appendicular skeleton of 2 ferrets. Based on these 2 cases, local recurrence may be expected unless adequate surgical margins are achieved. The metastatic potential of chondrosarcoma in this species appears to be low.  相似文献

The medical records of six dogs treated by sub-total scapulectomy for tumours involving the scapula were reviewed. The mean age of dogs in this study was 8 years and 4 months. Clinical signs on presentation included lameness of the affected forelimb and a palpable mass over the scapular area on physical examination. Pre-operative chest and affected forelimb radiographs were taken in most cases in addition to a biopsy. Subtotal scapulectomy was performed, ensuring margins clear of neoplastic tissue of at least 2 cm, preservation of the glenoid cavity and thus retention of the scapulo-humeral joint. On histopathological examination the tumours where diagnosed as chondrosarcoma (one), haemangiosarcoma (two), anaplastic malignant neoplasia (one) and osteosarcoma (one). Limb function was found to be good in all cases postoperatively. Prognosis was related to histopathological diagnosis of the tumour, favourable with chondrosarcoma and poor with the other tumour types.  相似文献

A 6‐year‐old castrated Goldendoodle dog was presented for left‐sided lameness of 3 weeks’ duration. Focal, moderate to marked increased 99mTc‐methylene diphosphonate (99mTc‐MDP) uptake was detected in the right caudal lung lobe, caudal angle of the left scapula, and the distal aspect of the left femur with whole body bone phase scintigraphy. Radiographs identified a well‐circumscribed, oval‐shaped soft tissue opaque mass in the right caudal lung lobe; a suspect oval‐shaped osteolytic lesion in the proximal third of the left scapula; and an osteolytic lesion in the distal aspect of the left femur. Metastatic pilomatricoma was confirmed histologically at all three sites.  相似文献

No case series exists in the literature describing scapula stress fractures. The purpose of this study was to review the clinical findings, diagnostic images and outcome of 8 horses diagnosed with scapula stress fractures. Scapula stress fractures were seen in Thoroughbred racehorses displaying acute moderate forelimb lameness. Nuclear scintigraphy identified the mid‐distal scapula spine and/or scapula supraspinous fossa as predilection sites. Conservative management resulted in a good prognosis for return to racing, but stress fracture recurrence may be seen.  相似文献

Objective To determine if anthropometric measurements of the Labrador scapula, humerus, ulna and radius, or their ratios, are related to the presence of elbow dysplasia (ED). Methods Digital calliper measurements of the lengths of the left scapula, humerus, radius and ulna, and their ratios, were analysed by gender in 103 volunteer Labradors (41 dogs, 62 bitches) against the ED radiological scores derived by the International Elbow Working Group (IEWG). The IEWG score is an umbrella score used to classify for ED and includes fragmented coronoid process, osteochondritis dessicans, incongruity and ununited anconeal process, the last of which occurs rarely in Labradors. Results Of the 103 Labradors studied, 31 were diagnosed radiographically with ED (20 bitches (32%), 11 (27%) dogs). Scapula length was significantly shorter for bitches with ED (P = 0.02), but not for dogs with ED. However, dogs showed a trend for a difference in the ulna:radius ratio (P = 0.06), which bitches did not. Although a greater percentage of bitches than dogs had ED in this study, the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions Labrador bitches diagnosed with ED have a shorter scapula, which is a new finding associated with this condition. The difference in presentation associated with gender is unexpected and further research is recommended.  相似文献

This report describes the successful surgical repair of a transverse, displaced scapula fracture in a foal. A 3.5 mm locking compression plate (LCP) was used on either side of the spine of the scapula. The suprascapular nerve was apparent upon dissection as it passed directly over the fracture line and care was taken to leave it intact, although the fracture line itself caused some irritation. The foal recovered without long‐term nerve damage and is sound at 1.5 years post surgery.  相似文献

The three‐dimensionally real position and movement of the scapula in the lateral side of the ribcage could not be clarified in the horse, since the body size of the horse is too large to apply the CT scanning and image analysis methods. In this study, therefore, we examined the position and the movability of scapula using a carcass of the Falabella which is one of the smallest breeds of the horse. The whole skeletal system in thoracic part of the Falabella could be three‐dimensionally observed by CT scanning method. The three‐dimensional images show that the scapula cranially slides and the ventral part of the scapula dorso‐cranially rotates, when the shoulder joint moves to the most cranial position as simulation. The three‐dimensional rotation angle was approximately 10 degrees. As a result of comparative osteology of the scapula between Falabella and the large draft horse, the infraspinous fossa was caudally enlarged in the larger draft horse, whereas the Falabella had narrower infraspinous fossa. We suggest that it may be due to the adaptational morphological change in the scapula bearing various body weights among breeds. The three‐dimensional CT image analysis and the simulation in carcass contribute to the analysis of the bone movements of the horse during walking and running locomotion as well as the motion analysis from external functional‐morphological data.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To report malignant transformation of an aneurysmal bone cyst in a dog. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. SAMPLE POPULATION: Client-owned dog. RESULTS: A 5-year-old male Labrador retriever was diagnosed with an aneurysmal bone cyst of the distal aspect of the right ulna. Surgical curettage resulted in remission of clinical signs for 33 months. Because of recurrence of clinical signs, a distal ulnar ostectomy was performed. Histopathologic examination of the excised specimen revealed a moderately differentiated chondrosarcoma at the level of the bone cyst. Limb function was normal for 17 months until a subcutaneous mass, determined to be a chondrosarcoma, occurred at the level of the shoulder. A right forequarter amputation was performed. CONCLUSIONS: Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign but may be transformed into a malignancy after surgical manipulation. Complete surgical excision should be attempted where possible. In this case, distal ulnar ostectomy was an effective means of preserving limb function and preventing local recurrence of chondrosarcoma.  相似文献

A 5-year-old cross-bred dog was examined with an 8-week history of coughing and a 3-week history of collapsing during exercise. Thoracic radiography revealed moderate right-sided cardiomegaly and a partially mineralized area over the dorsocranial heart base. Echocardiography demonstrated moderate eccentric and concentric right ventricular hypertrophy and a hypoechoic mass in the main pulmonary artery. The owners declined further investigations and the dog died at home 4 days later. Postmortem revealed a primary pulmonary artery chondrosarcoma. This is the first case report of a pulmonary artery chondrosarcoma in a dog and presents another differential diagnosis of syncope in the dog.  相似文献

A 6-year-old male Saint Bernard dog was examined because of a firm nonpainful tail-base mass. Radiographs revealed an expansile heterogeneous bony mass of the sixth coccygeal vertebra. The tail was amputated. The histologic diagnosis was coccygeal vertebral chondrosarcoma. Chondrosarcomas account for ten to eleven percent of all skeletal tumors and occur commonly in the flat bones in large-breed dogs. Radiographically chondrosarcomas appear predominantly osteolytic but may contain mottled mineralized densities. In the dog described here the radiographic signs were typical of a malignant cartilaginous tumor: cortical destruction, mottled mineralized densities, ill-defined margins, and continued but relatively slow growth. However, there was no periosteal reaction and the chondrosarcoma was at an unusual site.  相似文献

A 12-year-old Haflinger gelding with a history of a persistent cough was referred for evaluation of a severe lameness of the left forelimb. An excision of the right nictitans had been performed 2 years prior to presentation, and a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with embolic neoplastic cells in several blood vessels had been confirmed by histopathology. The origin of the lameness could not be localised with regional analgesia; therefore, a nuclear scintigraphic examination was performed. This revealed an area of marked increased radiopharmaceutical uptake at the level of the caudodorsal border of the left scapula. Further examination, including ultrasound-guided biopsy of the suspect region, confirmed the presence of SCC invading the scapula. Due to poor a prognosis, the horse was subjected to euthanasia. Prior to euthanasia, the gelding was tested homozygous for the missense variant in the damage-specific DNA-binding protein 2 (DDB2) gene, which is reported as a risk factor for the development of nictitans SCC in Haflinger horses. Post-mortem evaluation revealed multiple SCC metastasis, affecting the scapula, the liver and the lungs. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of bone metastasis following a primary periocular SCC in a horse.  相似文献

The purpose in this study was to determine whether there was a significance difference between conservative management and plating of scapular body fractures. Bilateral scapular body fractures were created in 10 dogs. The left scapula in each dog was treated by open reduction and plating of the scapular spine. The right scapula was not treated. Plating enhanced healing and early return of function, but there was no significant difference in the long-term results.  相似文献

A 15-year-old Morgan mare presented with a draining tract associated with osteomyelitis and sequestration of the medullary cancellous bone of the right scapula. Moderate lameness and muscle atrophy were present. Partial resection of the lateral cortex allowed exploration and debridement of the medullary cavity of the scapula. The mare returned to soundness, the muscle mass returned, but a small discharging sinus persisted.  相似文献

A 7‐year‐old neutered female Boerboel cross was examined for progressive left pelvic limb lameness. There was no left patellar reflex but the remaining pelvic limb reflexes were hyperreflexic. Radiographically, there was a poorly mineralized opacity occupying the intervertebral foramen at L4–L5. On computed tomography images there was a hyperattenuating intramedullary lesion at L4–L5 that continued caudally, lateralized to the left and became extramedullary, terminating at L5–L6. In addition, well marginated, hyperattenuating lesions were noted at two muscular sites. The dog underwent euthanasia and a caudal esophageal mass was found at post mortem examination. The tumors in the spinal cord, the esophagus, and the skeletal muscles were diagnosed histologically as low‐grade chondrosarcoma undergoing endochondral ossification. Spirocerca lupi‐induced esophageal chondrosarcoma was believed to be the primary site from which the other, presumably metastatic, lesions originated.  相似文献

Primary bone tumors are only occasionally reported in avian species. This paper presents the cases of an osteosarcoma in a 6-yr-old free-range chicken and a chondrosarcoma in a 3-yr-old barred Plymouth Rock chicken. The well-differentiated, moderately productive osteoblastic osteosarcoma arose from the synsacral vertebrae and had metastasized to the liver. The chondrosarcoma was well differentiated and firmly attached to the left side of the keel. There was no evidence of metastasis.  相似文献

Fractures of the scapula are uncommon and the majority of these involve the supraglenoid tubercle in young horses 2 years of age or less. Scapula fractures of the neck or body are rare. Comminuted scapula fractures have been diagnosed in racing breeds (Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses) and a review of the literature on the different fracture types and their management is presented in this article. The best prognosis for soundness is given for horses treated surgically. The different techniques for surgical management are described here and comments made with reference to nonsurgical management. A residual gait deficit may persist in some horses because of involvement of the suprascapular nerve at the time of injury, during surgery and follow‐up period, the severity of which depends on the degree of nerve trauma.  相似文献

Humeral chondrosarcoma was found in an 18-year-old male Hokkaido brown bear (Ursus arctos yesoensis). Necropsy revealed a large firm mass under the left superficial pectoral muscle at the axillary region. The mass involved the left shoulder joint and peripheral muscles, and connected to the head of the humerus with osteolysis. Histopathologically, the mass was composed of irregularly shaped myxomatous to cartilaginous tumor lobules. The tumor cell showed moderate nuclear atypia with a relatively high mitotic index, especially in the edges of the myxomatous lobules. The tumor cells were positively immunostained with vimentin and S-100 protein. Based on these findings, the tumors were diagnosed as chondrosarcoma. Metastases were found in the left axillary lymph node, lungs, liver and kidney.  相似文献

A 6-mo-old female scarlet macaw (Ara macao) was presented after a 2-mo period of anorexia and weakness. The bird was reluctant to fly 1 wk before referral due to a painful left wing. Physical examination revealed a firm swelling around the left shoulder. On radiographs, the diaphysis and proximal metaphysis of the left scapula were radiolucent. Computer tomography revealed an osteolytic process, suggestive of a bone tumor, affecting the left scapula. Cytology of a fine needle aspiration biopsy of the mass showed erythrocytes, a proliferation of spindle-shaped mesenchymal cells, and multinucleated giant cells (osteoclasts) suggestive of a giant cell tumor. The left wing, including the scapula, was amputated. The bird showed a fast recovery but died 1 hr later. Findings during the pathological examination were compatible with shock due to blood loss. The shoulder process was characterized as a giant cell tumor. To our knowledge, this is the first complete report of a giant cell tumor of the bone in a bird.  相似文献

A seven year old Arabian gelding was presented because of a draining tract cranial to the scapula that developed following puncture with a wooden rail four months previously and drained continuously despite antibiotic treatment.

The full extent of the tract could not be determined with the horse standing but a polyethylene catheter was passed 25 cm down the tract and passed medial to the scapula. With the horse under a general anaesthetic, further probing revealed the tract was much longer. The direction, length and contents of the tract were determined by fistulograph. The tract continued medial to the scapula and terminated with two radiolucent filling defects adjacent the spinous processes of the 5th-11th thoracic vertebrae. The filling defects were located more accurately in a cranial-caudal direction by the use of radiopaque markers, and in a medial-lateral direction by deep needle probing during surgery. Following surgical removal of the foreign bodies the tract healed and the horse returned to his original use. Foreign bodies and the use of fistulography are discussed.
