Dysautonomia was diagnosed in 11 young (median age, 14–months), predominantly medium- to large-breed dogs from 1988 to 1995. Clinical signs caused by autonomic dysfunction of the urinary, alimentary, and ocular systems were most common. Dysuria, mydriasis, absence of pupillary light reflexes, decreased tear production, dry mucous membranes, weight loss, and decreased anal tone were present in over 75% of affected dogs. Ocular pharmacological testing with a dilute (0.1%) solution of pilocarpine was used to demonstrate iris sphincter receptor function in all dogs. A low-dose 10.0375 mg/kg SC) bethanechol test and pharmacological testing with phenylephrine and epinephrine also demonstrated cholinergic and adrenergic receptor function in 4 dogs. All dogs died or were euthanized as a result of autonomic dysfunction. Neuronal depletion, with associated gli-osis and minimal inflammation were noted histologically in the autonomic ganglia of each dog. The pelvic, ciliary, celiac, cranial cervical, and cranial and caudal mesenteric ganglia were affected in all dogs. The cause of autonomic failure in these dogs was not determined. Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly of the tongue that is usually characterized by a short and thick lingual frenulum. The genetic mutations such as in TBox genes and other foetal mechanism have still been under investigation as possible causes of ankyloglossia. This study describes morphology of anklyoglossia phenotype found in members of two closely bred Kangal dog families. Morphology of ankyloglossia and immunohistochemical localization of αB-crystallin, an anti-apoptotic protein, in the frenulum tissue collected during frenectomy was described. Grossly, the lingual frenulum was observed as it extended up to the tip or near the tip of the tongue. The tip of the tongue was often notched and appeared in 'W' shape. No other craniofacial anomalies were associated with ankyloglossia. Histologically, the frenulum tissue was covered by stratified squamous epithelia of variable thickness. Skeletal muscle fibres were often scattered in the vicinity of collagen fibres of the lamina propria. αB-crystallin was immunolocalized exclusively in skeletal muscle fibres. In conclusion, ankyloglossia in the dog generally occurs as a sole anomaly. The presence of αB-crystallin immunoreactivity exclusively in skeletal muscle fibres suggests that there may be a connection between occurrences of ankyloglossia in the dog and a delay or interference with apoptosis of the skeletal fibres in the frenulum tissue.  相似文献

Objective— To report revision of cemented total hip arthroplasty failure with cementless components in 3 dogs.
Study Design— Clinical case reports.
Animals— Dogs with total hip arthroplasty failure (n=3).
Methods— Cementless total hip arthroplasty revision was performed in 3 dogs with previously cemented femoral and acetabular components. All dogs required revision of the femoral component and 1 dog also required revision of the acetabular component.
Results— Revisions resulted in a stable functional prosthesis with successful bone integration.
Conclusions— Use of cementless components may be a viable option for revision of loosened cemented prosthesis after explantation of failed cemented canine total hip replacements.
Clinical Relevance— Failed canine-cemented total hip arthroplasties can be successfully revised with cementless components.  相似文献

Background: In people, hypercortisolism (HC) has been associated with acalculous cholecystitis and biliary dyskinesia, which may potentiate ascending biliary infections. In dogs, an association between HC and gallbladder disease recently has been documented, although the role of bacteria remains controversial. Furthermore, there is no information on the gallbladder bile microbial flora in healthy dogs.
Objectives: To investigate the microbial flora in gallbladder bile in healthy dogs, the relationship between iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism and bactibilia and possible changes in biliary microbial flora after cortisol withdrawal in dogs.
Animals: Six control dogs and 6 dogs treated with hydrocortisone.
Methods: Gallbladder bile obtained by percutaneous ultrasound-guided cholecystocentesis was cultured aerobically and anaerobically and examined cytologically before (d0), during (d28, d56, d84), and after (d28p, d56p, d84p) administration of hydrocortisone (8 mg/kg PO q12h).
Results: In the control group, 2/42 bile cultures yielded bacterial growth ( Enterococcus sp.; Escherichia coli on d0) and 1/42 bile smears had cytological evidence of bacteria (d28). In the HC group, 2/42 bile cultures yielded bacterial growth ( Enterococcus sp. on d28; Bacillus sp. on d28p) and 3/42 bile smears had cytological evidence of bacteria (d84, d84, d28p). All dogs remained healthy throughout the study period (168d).
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Based on the results of conventional bacterial culture techniques, gallbladder bile of healthy dogs periodically may harbor bacteria, which do not appear to be clinically relevant. A 3-month period of iatrogenic HC was not associated with bactibilia. A higher prevalence of bactibilia may be detected with micromolecular techniques.  相似文献

Collagenase, a proteolytic enzyme, was injected intradiscally in nine clinically normal, middle-aged beagles. Calcium chloride diluent solution (control), 100 ABC units of collagenase, and 250 ABC units of collagenase, were injected in randomly selected intervertebral discs (T13-L1 to L5-L6). On day 11, the discs injected with collagenase were narrowed radiographically, but there was no significant change in myelograms. Grossly and histologically, there was dissolution of the intervertebral discs, mainly nucleus pulposus, and protrusion of nucleus material in the vertebral body through bony end-plates in discs injected with collagenase. Collagenase chemonucleolysis may be an alternative to spinal surgery for intervertebral disc protrusion in dogs.  相似文献

Abstract— Five normal greyhounds were evaluated for hypersensitivity to various grasses, weeds, trees and fungi with both an intradermal allergy test and a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All dogs were hyposensitized for 6 months with the same mixture of 14 allergens, according to the treatment schedule recommended by the commercial laboratory that provided the ELISA allergy test. Following hyposensitization with irrelevant antigens at a concentration of 1:200 w/v, dogs were reevaluated for hypersensitivity with the intradermal allergy test. No significant increase in intradermal reactions was found after 6 months of hyposensitization, and all dogs remained asymptomatic during the study period. Hyposensitization of normal greyhounds with irrelevant aqueous antigens, administered according to one treatment schedule recommended following ELISA allergy testing, did not appear to cause false positive reactions on subsequent intradermal allergy tests or to induce clinical hypersensitivity. Further studies are required to determine if hypersensitivity to irrelevant antigens is induced in atopic dogs following hyposensitization with nonaqueous extracts or higher concentrations of aqueous antigens. Résumé— Cinq Greyhound sains ont été utilisés pour étudier l'hypersensibilitéà des pollens, des moisissures des arbres et des herbacées en utilisant des intradermoréactions et des tests ELISA du commerce. Tous les animaux ont été désensibilisés pendant 6 mois avec le même mélange de 14 allergènes, en suivant le protocole recommandé par le laboratoire qui commercialise le test ELISA. Après hyposensibilisation à ces antigènes à une concentration de 1/200 p/v, les chiens ont été réévalués par des intradermoréactions. Aucune différence signifaicative avant et après traitement n'a été notée et tous les chiens sont restés asymptomatiques durant la période de l'essai. L'hyposensibilisation chez des Greyhounds sains avec des antigènes auxquels ils ne sont pas sensibles, en suivant le protocole recommandé par la laboratoire producteur, ne semble pas entrainer de fausses réactions intradermiques positives ni une hypersensibilité clinique. D'autres études sont nécessaires pour savour si cette sensibilisation peut être induite chez des animaux atopiques, avec des extraits non aqueux et à de plus fortes concentrations. Zusammenfassung— Fünf gesunde Greyhounds wurden uaf allergische Reaktionen gegenüber verschiedenen Gräsern, Unkräutern, Bäumen und Pilzen sowohl mit einem Intradermaltest als auch mit einem kommerziellen ELISA-Test getestet. Alle Hunde wurden über 6 Monate mit derselben Mischung aus 14 Allergenen “desensibilisiert”. Hierzu wurde ein Therapieschema verwendet, das von dem Labor, das den ELISA-Test durchgeführt hatte, empfohlen worden war. Nach der “Desensibilisierung” mit nicht relevanten Allergenen in einer Konzentration von 1:200 w/v wurden die Hunde erneut mit einem Intradermaltest getestet. Nach der “Desensibilisierung”über sechs Monate gab es keinen signifikanten Anstieg bei den intradermalen Reaktionen. Alle Hunde blieben währen der Untersuchungszeit symptomfrie. “Desensibilisierung” von gesunden Greyhounds mit nicht relevanten wäßrigen Antigenen, die nach dem empfohlenen Therapieschema nach einem ELISA-Allergietest angewendet worden waren, schienen keine falsch-positiven Reaktionen im nachfolgenden Intradermaltest hervorzurufen und keine klinische Allergie auszulösen. Weitere Untersuchungen sind erforderlich, urn zu klären, ob eine Allergie gegenüber nicht relevanten Antigenen bei atopischen Hunden nach Desensibilisierung mit wäßrigen Extrakten order mit höheren Konzentrationen von wäßrigen Allergenen induziert werden kann. Resumen Cinco perros galgos de apariencia clínica normal, se evaluaron con tests de alergia a varias hierbas, árboles y hongos, por medio de inyecciones intradérmicas y también con ensayos comerciales de enzima de inmunoabsorbencia ligada (ELISA). A todos los perros se les admistró tratamiento de hiposensitización por un curso de 6 meses con una mezcla de 14 alergenos, según el protocolo recomendado por el laboratorio comercial proveedores del test ELISA. Después del tratamiento inmunosupresivo con una concentración de antígenos irrelevantes de 1:200 w/v, los animales se volvieron a evaluar por medio del test de inyecciones intradérmicas. Después de 6 meses de terapia inmunosupresiva no se observaron cambios significativos en las reacciones cutáneas, y todos los animales permanecieron asintomaticos durante el periodo de estudio. El tratamiento inmunosupresivo de perros galgos con antígenos en solución acuosa administrados de acuerdo con el protocolo recomendado después del test ELISA, no produjo reacciones falsas positivas en tests intradérmicos posteriores, o reacciones de hipersensitividad alguna. Para determinar si la posibilidad de hipersensitividad con antígenos irrelevantes es inducida en perros que padecen atopia después del tratamiento inmunosupresivo con extractos antigénicos de tipo no acuoso, o mayores concentraciones de antígenos acuosos, más investigaciones son necesarias.  相似文献

Objective- To determine whether intertrochanteric osteotomy (ITO) can prevent the progression of degenerative joint disease (DJD) in dysplastic hip joints.
Study Design- The results of ITO were assessed retrospectively by using owner questionnaires, physical examination, and radiographic evaluation.
Animals- Eighteen client-owned dogs (29 coxofemoral joints were evaluated).
Methods- Lameness was scored according to a grading system. A scoring system was also developed to assess radiographically evident osteoarthritis on a ventrodorsal projection of the coxofemoral joints in extension.
Results- Twenty-nine ITO were performed in 18 dogs with varying degrees of hip dysplasia. The dogs were lame on 19 of 29 rear limbs on physical examination before surgery. In 22 of the 29 hip joints, palpation caused signs of pain. The median age at the first and second surgical procedure was 14.5 months and 18 months, respectively. Follow-up evaluation was performed on average at 9.77 (FU I), 22.52 (FU II), and 47.50 months (FU in) after surgery. Based on the owners' evaluation, there was a tendency toward improvement after surgery. The results of the physical examination at the preoperative examination and at the three follow-up examinations did not differ significantly. The follow-up radiographic scores showed significantly worse DJD than the preoperative scores.
Conclusions- ITO does not prevent progression of DJD in the dysplastic hip.
Clinical Relevance- Knowledge of the long-term effects of ITO is essential for surgeons trying to achieve improvement in dogs with hip dysplasia.  相似文献

Cutaneous Hemangiosarcoma in 25 Dogs: A Retrospective Study   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1  
Hemangiosarcomas confined to the skin and underlying muscle were surgically excised in 25 dogs. Tumors were staged based on their histological location (ie, dermal, hypodermal, and deep). Dermal (stage I) hemangiosarcomas were small, most commonly ventral-abdominal or preputial in location, and were associated with prolonged survival times (median survival, 780 days). Tumors with hypodermal (stage II) and underlying muscular involvement (stage III) were grouped together because of their larger size, bruise-like appearance, lack of anatomic predilection, biological behavior, and shorter survival times (median survival of 172 and 307 days for dogs with stages II and III, respectively). We conclude that dermal hemangiosarcomas may be effectively treated with surgery alone, whereas hemangiosarcomas located within the hypodermal tissues bear a poor prognosis and warrant wide surgical excision with adjuvant chemotherapy.  相似文献

Splenic Infarction in 16 Dogs: A Retrospective Study   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Sixteen dogs with splenic infarction due to causes other than splenic torsion were identified. Dogs with splenic infarction often had multiple concurrent diseases, and surgical management of splenic infarction was associated with high mortality. Splenic infarction occurred in dogs with hypercoagulable conditions associated with liver disease, renal disease, and hyperadrenocorticism, or as a consequence of uniform splenomegaly, neoplasia, or thrombosis associated with cardiovascular disease. Clinical signs and common laboratory findings generally reflected the underlying disease process. A variety of splenic abnormalities were detected by abdominal ultrasound in 15 dogs, with the ventral extremity of the spleen being most often abnormal. Four dogs were euthanized or died because of the presence of severe systemic disease, whereas 12 dogs underwent laparotomy. Complete splenectomy was performed in 9 dogs and partial splenectomy was performed in 2 dogs. Seven dogs died in the immediate postoperative period, 3 required chronic veterinary care, and 2 had uncomplicated long-term recoveries. Splenic infarction should be regarded as a sign of altered blood flow and coagulation, rather than as a primary disease, and surgical management should be reserved for patients with life-threatening complications such as hemoabdomen or sepsis.  相似文献

Objectives— To compare esophageal function in dogs with idiopathic laryngeal paralysis (ILP) to age and breed matched controls; to determine if dysfunction is associated with aspiration pneumonia over 1 year; and to compare clinical neurologic examination of dogs with ILP at enrollment and at 1 year. Study Design— Prospective controlled cohort study. Animals— Dogs with ILP (n=32) and 34 age and breed matched healthy dogs. Methods— Mean esophageal score was determined for each phase of 3 phase esophagrams, analyzed blindly. After unilateral cricoarytenoid laryngoplasty, dogs with ILP were reexamined (including thoracic radiography) at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Neurologic status was recorded at enrollment, 6 and 12 months. Results— Esophagram scores in dogs with ILP were significantly higher in each phase compared with controls, most notably with liquid (P<.0001). Dysfunction was more pronounced in the cervical and cranial thoracic esophagus. Five dogs that had aspiration pneumonia during the study had significantly higher esophagram scores than dogs that did not develop aspiration pneumonia (P<.02). Ten (31%) ILP dogs had generalized neurologic signs on enrollment and all ILP dogs developed neurologic signs by 1 year (P<.0001). Conclusions— Dogs with ILP also have esophageal dysfunction. Postoperative aspiration pneumonia is more likely in dogs with higher esophagram scores. Dogs with ILP will most likely develop generalized neuropathy over the course of 1 year. Clinical Relevance— Esophagrams and neurologic examinations should be performed on all dogs with ILP.  相似文献

Background

Published information describing the clinical features and outcome for dogs with epiglottic retroversion (ER) is limited.

Hypothesis/Objectives

To describe clinical features, comorbidities, outcome of surgical versus medical treatment and long‐term follow‐up for dogs with ER. We hypothesized that dogs with ER would have upper airway comorbidities and that surgical management (epiglottopexy or subtotal epiglottectomy) would improve long‐term outcome compared to medical management alone.

Animals

Twenty‐four client‐owned dogs.

Methods

Retrospective review of medical records to identify dogs with ER that underwent surgical or medical management of ER.

Results

Dogs with ER commonly were middle‐aged to older, small breed, spayed females with body condition score (BCS) ≥6/9. Stridor and dyspnea were the most common presenting signs. Concurrent or historical upper airway disorders were documented in 79.1% of cases. At last evaluation, 52.6% of dogs that underwent surgical management, and 60% of dogs that received medical management alone, had decreased severity of presenting clinical signs. In dogs that underwent surgical management for ER, the incidence of respiratory crisis decreased from 62.5% before surgery to 25% after surgical treatment. The overall calculated Kaplan–Meier median survival time was 875 days.

Conclusion and clinical importance

Our study indicated that a long‐term survival of at least 2 years can be expected in dogs diagnosed with epiglottic retroversion. The necessity of surgical management cannot be determined based on this data, but dogs with no concurrent upper airway disorders may benefit from a permanent epiglottopexy to alleviate negative inspiratory pressures.  相似文献

Magnesium is a divalent cation involved in more than 300 metabolic processes. Magnesium acts as an intracellular regulator of most energy-demanding pathways. Clinical investigation in the human medical field has determined risk factors for hypomagnesemia and its relationship to a number of disease processes. Experimental studies have established the effects of hypomagnesemia in dogs, but little is known of its prevalence, risk factors, or clinical associations in a hospital population of dogs. To study the prevalence, risk factors, and clinical associations of hypomagnesemia in dogs, a retrospective cross-sectional study of dogs admitted to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Teaching Hospital over a 2.5-year period was undertaken. The prevalence of hypomagnesemia in the study population was 6.1% (188 of 3,102 dogs). Using both categorical and continuous variables in a univariate analysis, significant associations with hypomagnesemia were identified and used to construct a multivariate analysis of the relative risk of hypomagnesemia. Results from evaluation of 3,102 dogs indicate that the most significant predictors of hypomagnesemia were albumin ( P ≤ .0001; odds ratio [OR] = 0.2), potassium ( P ≤ .0001; OR = 0.5), total CO2 ( P ≤.05; OR = 0.9), and blood urea nitrogen concentrations ( P < .0001; OR = 0.9), a diagnosis of cardiovascular disease ( P < .02; OR = 1.9); and being a Collie ( P < .02; OR = 3.9) or German Shepherd Dog ( P < .002; OR = 2.2). These results can be used to better understand and predict hypomagnesemia in dogs.  相似文献

Incessant supraventricular tachyarrhythmias are known to result in myocardial dysfunction indistinguishable from idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy by current testing methods. This tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy (TICM), however, is uniquely reversible with adequate rhythm control. Two dogs were presented to The Ohio State University for incessant supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and echocardiographic signs of dilated cardiomyopathy, later proven to be TICM. A 3rd dog presented for frequent paroxysms of SVT and syncope had echocardiographic signs of mild myocardial systolic dysfunction. All 3 dogs had inadequate rhythm control with multiple antiarrhythmic agents, and 1 dog suffered from recurrent left-sided congestive heart failure. Generalized cardiomegaly was found in 1 dog and left-sided dilatation without concurrent right-sided enlargement in 1 dog. Mild-to-severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction was confirmed echocardiographically in all dogs. A total of 4 atrioventricular accessory pathways (APs) were found during invasive electrophysiologic studies in these 3 dogs. All APs were successfully ablated with radiofrequency energy delivered through a thermistor-tipped catheter. Elimination of AP conduction, and thus orthodromic atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia, resulted in resolution of all clinical and echocardiographic evidence of TICM in these dogs. This result confirms that the cardiomyopathy was, in fact, reversible TICM. All cardiovascular medications were discontinued, and no complications occurred during a 15-25-month follow-up period.  相似文献

Ventricular Arrhythmias in Dogs Undergoing Splenectomy: A Prospective Study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Fifty dogs undergoing splenectomy for splenic masses (n = 40), torsion of the splenic pedicle (n = 5), and immune-mediated disease (n = 5) were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively for ventricular arrhythmias and the relationship between ventricular arrythmia and splenic disease. The ability of 1 -minute electrocardiograms recorded every 6 hours (ECGs/q6hr) to detect ventricular arrythmia was compared with continuous 48-hour Holter monitoring. Based on continuous Holter monitoring, splenectomized dogs had a high incidence (22 of 50) of rapid ventricular tachycardia. The incidence of rapid ventricular tachycardia was significantly higher in dogs with ruptured splenic masses (16 of 23) than without rupture (1 of 17) ( P < .001). When the results of ECG/q6hr were compared with the results of continuous Holter monitoring, ECG/q6hr was normal in 29% (4 of 14) of dogs with rapid ventricular tachycardia at > 3,000 ventricular extrasystoles (VE)/hr; 50% (4 of 8) of dogs with rapid ventricular tachycardia at 1,000 to 3,000 VE/hr and 100% (6 of 6) of dogs with 10 to 300 VE/hr without rapid ventricular tachycardia. Although dogs undergoing splenectomy had a high incidence of ventricular arrythmias, one-minute ECGs/q6h were unreliable for detection of ventricular arrythmias even when high-frequency extrasystoles occurred.  相似文献

Background: Antithrombin (AT) is the major inhibitor of coagulation. In people, hypoantithrombinemia is associated with hypercoagulability, thrombosis, and poor prognosis. Veterinary studies, however, have not demonstrated similar prognostic significance. Thus, AT activity (ATA) in dogs currently is interpreted based on human medicine guidelines. Hypothesis: ATA can serve as a prognostic marker in dogs, as has been shown in people. Objectives: (1) To describe the clinical and clinicopathologic findings, diagnoses, and outcome of dogs with decreased versus normal ATA, (2) to identify diseases and mechanisms associated with hypoantithrombinemia, and (3) to assess ATA as a prognostic indicator. Animals and Methods: Retrospective study of 149 dogs with ATA measurement during their disease course. Results: Hypoantithrombinemic dogs had a higher proportion of leukocytosis, hemostatic abnormalities, hypoalbuminemia, and hyperbilirubinemia versus dogs with normal ATA. Hypoantithrombinemia commonly was present in immune‐mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), pancreatitis, hepatopathy, and neoplasia. It was associated with higher risk of mortality in the entire study population and for specific diseases (eg, IMHA, neoplasia). The odds ratio for mortality significantly and progressively increased when ATA was <60 and <30% (9.9, 14.7, respectively). A receiver operating characteristics analysis of ATA as a predictor of mortality showed an area under the curve of 0.7, and an optimal cutoff point of 60% yielded sensitivity and specificity of 58 and 85%, respectively. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: In dogs, ATA <60% indicates increased mortality risk, similarly to human patients, but ATA has limited value as a single discriminating factor in the outcome.  相似文献

Healing of incisions made by sharp blade and of those made by electroincision was compared. The electrosurgical unit used generated a wave form that closely resembled a square wave. Six paired incisions were made in the skin and external abdominal muscle fascia of 8 dogs by sharp blade and electroincision, and were sutured. One pair of incisions was made every other day in each dog; fascia and skin were examined at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 days after incision. The presence of certain microscopic features was graded on an arbitrary scale of 0, 1, 2, and 3 for none, slight, moderate, and heavy, respectively; the grades were then averaged and compared. No differences were observed in the quantity of hemorrhage, capillaries, fibroblasts, and collagen and mature fibroblasts. More fibrin, necrosis, and polymorphonuclear leukocytes were observed following electroincision at 4, 6, 12, and 8 to 10 days, respectively. Considerably more edema was present following sharp incision from 4 to 12 days. The strength of wounds made by sharp incision was greater than the strength of those made by electroincision after day 6, but the two were almost identical by day 12. The data suggest that suture removal should be delayed until the 10th postoperative day, approximately 3 days later than is advised for sharp incision.  相似文献

Abstract— A temporal study of the carriage of Staphylococcus intermedius from the nares, anal ring and ventral midline of 10 normal dogs was compared to that of 19 atopic dogs receiving low dose, alternate-day prednisolone over a period of six months and maintained in clinical remission.
Chi-squared comparison of the two groups revealed no difference between the groups in the recovery rate of S. intermedius at any single site and no significant difference when all sites were pooled.  相似文献
