A dead tree of Pinus armandii Franch. var. amamiana (Koidz.) Hatusima (abbreviated to PAAm) was obtained from a natural habitat on Tanega-shima Island and various properties of its wood were investigated. Grain angle was measured and soft X-ray analysis was undertaken to obtain the density in each annual ring. Unit shrinkage and dynamic properties were measured by shrinkage, bending, and compression tests. Variations of wood properties in the radial direction, relationships of wood properties to density, and annual ring width were examined. Roughly speaking, variations in the radial direction of the grain angle, twist angle by drying, Young’s modulus and strength in static bending, absorbed energy in impact bending, compressive Young’s modulus, compressive strength, and compressive proportional limit corresponded to the variation of annual ring width. As a result, it was determined that if PAAm is afforested artificially for the purposes of lumber production and conservation, the annual rings of logs should not be too widely spaced. Wood properties of PAAm were similar to those of Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii Parl.), which is another representative pine on Tanegashima Island. To evaluate the effect of adjacent tree species on the susceptibility of Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii) to pine wilt disease, an inoculation experiment was conducted usingP. thunbergii seedlings potted with seedlings of six tree species,i. e. Alnus sieboldiana, Eurya japonica, Lespedeza bicolor formacutifolia, Pinus thumbergii, Robinia pseudo-acacia andSarothamus scoparius. About ten months after planting, they were inoculated with the pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) in early July 1992. After that, the proportion of pine seedlings with completely discolored foliage increased more quickly when the seedlings were potted withR. pseudo-acacia, S. scoparius orA. sieboldiana than when potted withP. thunbergii, L. bicolor orE. japonica. At the end of the study period, 17 weeks after inoculation, it reached 90.6%, 90.0%, 87.5%, 72.7%, 63.3%, and 59.4% when the pine seedlings were potted withR. pseudo-acacia, S. scoparius, A. sieboldiana, P. thunbergii, L. bicolor andE. japonica, respectively. This indicated that the susceptibility ofP. thunbergii seedlings to pine wilt disease was influence by the species of adjacent trees.  相似文献

Seventy‐four half‐sib families of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta ssp. latifolia Engelm.) plus trees were measured for vigour, height growth, stem diameter, wood density and ring width in two Swedish field trials at age 9. Height growth, wood density and ring width differed between families within provenances with variance components of 3–8 %. Coefficients of variation were highest for height growth and lowest for ring width. Heritabilities were similar for height growth and wood density but lower for ring width. These genetic parameters seemed to be equal for all provenances. Indirect selection for high dry stem biomass was more effective using height growth than wood density, and a correlated response in wood density of 2.1 % of mean by selecting the 15 highest parent trees was indicated. Juvenile wood density looks uncertain as a selection criterion for mature wood density.  相似文献

This study considered the effects of thinning on the development of compression wood in stems of 35-year-old stand of Corsican pine (Pinus nigra L.). Part of the stand had been thinned at 5-yearly intervals and part left unthinned. Twenty trees each from the thinned and unthinned stands were randomly selected and felled. Measurements were made on tree height, stem diameter, stem slenderness and canopy depth. Wood samples were removed from the central part of the main log and cross-sectional measurements made on ring width, basic density and compression wood content. Cross-sectional area of compression wood was found to be three time higher in stems from the unthinned trees in comparison with those from the thinned trees. No significant differences in mean radial ring width or basic density were found between treatments. Correlations indicated that, with increasing in stem diameter, compression wood content increased in the unthinned trees, while a decline in compression was observed in the thinned trees. Tree height was also positively correlated with compression wood content in unthinned trees, while no equivalent relationship was observed in thinned trees. Observations from this study, while not conclusive, suggest that phototropic stimulus may be producing stem inclinations in the unthinned stand as trees compete for space in the canopy, whereas crown competition has been largely eliminated in the thinned stand; and that this is responsible for compression wood levels recorded in this study.  相似文献

Taking Chinese pine in Qianshan Mountains as a sample, the tree ring width chronology including Standard, Residual, and Arstan chronologies was established. The results show that the tree ring width of Chinese pine is highly correlated with the temperatures from May to July and from September to November. Statistically significant positive correlations were observed between tree ring width and the extreme minimum temperatures in July and mean minimum temperatures in September. The chronology was significantly or very significantly correlated with extreme minimum temperatures in December and the following January, with mean minimum temperatures in January, with annual precipitation and with precipitation in April, May and the following December. The Chinese pine responded strongly to the monthly/yearly water vapor pressure and relative humidity. Annual and largely monthly evaporation in April–July had a negative effect on tree growth, and was particularly striking for evaporation in April–July. The narrow tree rings recorded by the chronology demonstrated the 30 occasions of extreme drought since 1800. The growth of Chinese pine in the Qianshan mountains were also affected by climate changes on a hemispheric and global scale. There were 11-, 23-and 50-year-common periodicities between the chronology and solar activity and 10-, 20-and 45-year-common periodicities between the chronology and geomagnetic activity. __________ Translated from Chinese Journal of Applied Ecology, 2007, 18(10): 2191–2201 [译自: 应用生态学报]  相似文献

Ring characteristics of pine trees grown in polluted air showed up distinctly as a decrease in newly devised synthetic indicators such as product of W (relative ring width) and DD (relative difference between maximum and minimum density within a ring) or product of W and MD (relative mean density). Intensity of combined air pollution was estimated by the total of daily maximum concentration of SO2, ozone, NO2, and NO2. Since synthetic indicators show a significant correlation, at the over 98% confidence level, with the intensity of combined air pollution, phytotoxicity of air to pine growth must be attributable at least in part to combined effect of air pollutants.  相似文献

The biomass and the spatial distribution of fine and small roots were studied in two Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii Parl.) stands growing on a sandy soil. More biomass of fine and small roots was found in the 17-year-old than in the 40-year-old stand. There were 62 g m−2 of fine roots and 56 g m−2 of small roots in the older stand, which represented mean values of 608 g for fine and 552 g for small roots per tree, respectively. In the younger stand, a total of 85 g m−2 of fine roots and 66 g m−2 of small roots were determined, representing a mean of 238 g for fine and 186 g for small roots per tree, respectively. Fine and small root biomasses decreased linearly with a soil depth of 0–50 cm in the older stand. In the younger stand, the fine and small roots developed only up to a depth of 30 cm. Horizontal distributions (with regard to distance from a tree) of both root groups were homogeneous. A positive correlation in the amount of biomass of fine and small roots per m2 relative to tree size was found. Fine and small root biomasses increased consistently from April to July in both stands. The results also indicated earlier growth activity of the fine roots than small roots at the beginning of the growing season. The seasonal increases in fine and small root biomasses were slightly higher in the younger stand than the older stand.  相似文献

• Introduction

The objective of this work was to study how spacing and genetic entry and/or origin group affect radial growth (ring width and cumulative diameter development) and ring density from pith to bark in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and in what sense their annual variability could be explained by the climatic variables. The spacing trial was located in central Finland, with current stand density range of 2,000–4,000 trees per hectare. All the six genetic entries had Kanerva pine (plus tree S1101) as a father tree, whereas the mother tree represented Finnish plus trees from southern, central and northern Finland.  相似文献

Adult trees of Pinus armandii var. amamiana (PAAm) and P. thunbergii grown in the field were inoculated with 100000 or 1000 of the nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus to evaluate their susceptibility to pine wilt disease. PAAm trees inoculated with 100000 nematodes started to show disease symptoms 2 weeks after inoculation, and all died within 29 weeks. Although the PAAm trees inoculated with 1000 nematodes tended to show delayed disease symptoms compared with those inoculated with 100000 nematodes, all of them died within 33 weeks after inoculation. All P. thunbergii trees inoculated with 1000 nematodes had died 6 weeks after inoculation. In the nematode-inoculated PAAm trees, death of branches distal to the nematode inoculation site was the first visible symptom, followed by the systemic discoloration of needles, whereas the whole tree wilted simultaneously in P. thunbergii trees. In nematode-inoculated PAAm trees, the period from inoculation to death was longer than that in P. thunbergii. These results suggest that adult PAAm trees are susceptible to pine wilt disease, but are less vulnerable than P. thunbergii.  相似文献

To investigate the relations between growth and the wood properties of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi), six sample trees of varied ages and radial growth were felled and the ring width, ring density, percentage of latewood, and some other factors were determined. There were significant differences in ring density and percentage of latewood between sample trees with vigorous growth and those with poor growth. In corewood the ring density decreased with increasing ring width for all sample trees, whereas in outerwood this trend did not appear. Moreover, the latewood width increased with the increment of ring width only in outerwood, whereas there was almost no change in the corewood. The variation in patterns of ring width, ring density, and percentage of latewood in the radial direction and the relation with height was also studied.Part of this report was presented at the 47th annual meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Kochi, April 1997  相似文献

The transverse shrinkage variation within trees was examined for five sugi cultivars. The within-tree trends of tangential shrinkage (α T) were different by cultivar, whereas radial shrinkage (α R) increased from pith to bark in most cultivars. The tangential/radial shrinkage ratio (α T/α R) decreased from pith to bark in most cultivars, because the radial variation of α R was larger than that of α T. The cultivars showed significant differences among cultivars in α T, α R, and α T/α R, but the difference among cultivars for α T/α R was smaller. The relationships between transverse shrinkage and microfi bril angle (MFA), basic density (BD), tree ring parameters, and modulus of elasticity were examined. The α T and α R showed positive relationships with BD, latewood percentage, latewood density, and modulus of elasticity, and negative relationships with MFA and ring width. The relationships with earlywood density were weak. Sugi exhibited variation in transverse shrinkage within stem and among cultivars, with the variation affected by MFA, density, and tree ring parameters. The total area ofPinus densiflora andP. thunbergii forests in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1978 was 65,200 ha, which decreased to 30,300 ha by 1985 mainly due to pine wilt mortality caused byBursaphelenchus xylophilus. This damage has also continued thereafter. To estimate the survivability of pine trees in Ibaraki Prefecture, pine tree mortality has been studied in eight experimental forests for over 20 years, and ground surveys throughout the Prefecture were also conducted in 1995. Survival in the experimental forests corresponded well to the results of ground surveys. Pine forests remained as pure stands if control measures were undertaken or if they were located in cool areas. In warm areas where no control was undertaken, most of the pine forests disappeared and only a few pine trees remained in mixed forests, while on dry soils no mature or old pine trees survived. Since surviving pine forests are often cut for wood utilization,P. densiflora andP. thunbergii may decrease in area to become rare species in the future unless controls are applied and/or reforestation with resistant pines is carried out. A part of this paper was orally presented at the 108th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Forestry Society (1997).  相似文献

Summary Variations and correlations of various ring width and ring density features were analyzed in 18 European oak (Quercus petraea andQuercus robur) trees from northeastern France. In light of these analyses, the goodness of various tree-ring features as a climatic parameter was discussed. In general, ring density features (viz. earlywood density, latewood density, average ring density, minimum density and maximum density) show a stronger response to calendar year, a comprehensive climatic variable, than ring width features (viz. earlywood width, latewood width, total ring width and latewood percent). The response of latewood features (viz. latewood width, latewood density and maximum latewood density) is stronger than that of earlywood features (viz. earlywood width, earlywood density and minimum earlywood density). Average ring density seems to be the most sensible tree-ring feature in European oak in terms of the response to calendar year. Moreover, total ring width as a climatic parameter is not as good as latewood width, and maximum (latewood) density and minimum (earlywood) density appears not to contain as much climatic information as (average) latewood density and (average) earlywood density, respectively. This project was supported by the institut National de la Recherche Agromonique (INRA). The ring characteristics and screw withdrawal resistance (SWR) of naturally regenerated Taiwan yellow cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana) trees were explored. Significant differences in average ring width (RW), earlywood width, latewood width, ring density (RD), earlywood density (ED), latewood density (LD), highest density (Dmax), lowest density (Dmin), latewood percentage (LWP), and SWR were observed between trees, rings (SWR excluded), and tree height positions. The RW components in the radial direction increased from the pith outward to about the 3rd to 5th ring and then decreased to about the 25th ring; it was almost constantly sustained toward the bark side. The RD in the radial direction slowly decreased from the pith outward to the bark side. Average ring width and ring density were significantly affected by the various tree growth rates, radial ring numbers, and tree height positions. ED, LD, Dmax, Dmin, and LWP were the most important factors determining the overall RD. RW did not correlate with tree RD. SWR is correlated with ED, RD, Dmin, LWP, and intra-ring density variation (IDV). Thus, the SWR can be used to predict wood density and in nondestructive evaluation of a living tree.  相似文献

The natural forests of Laricio Pine (Pinus nigra Subsp. salzmannii) cover in Spain an area of 353,000 ha, producing annually 310,000 m3 of roundwood. This species is considered as the fourth, most important Spanish conifer, being its timber frequently used in construction. The natural area of distribution of Laricio pine in Spain is officially divided into ten different regions of provenance, being only four of them considered as productive. The present study on the influence of growth conditions on extracted wood basic density (EBD) is carried out on 89 P. nigra trees, sampled from the two most productive Spanish regions of provenance (R.7 and R.8) in seven different sites. Cross-sectional disks were cut at 3 m (in 89 trees) and every 3 m height (in 18 trees) from the butt up to 15 m. For assessing the pattern of radial variation of the properties, 20×20×20 mm3 wood samples were taken radially from every cross-sectional disk. In every 20×20×20 mm3 wood sample, age and distance to the pith of the central annual ring was recorded, together with the average growth rate. Extractive content and EBD were measured in every sample. The results lead to the conclusion that there is not a significant relationship between EBD and provenance or growth rate. On the contrary, a significant relationship has been found between EBD and site quality or cambial age. The results also demonstrate that in a tree EBD tends to diminish from the base to the top and from the pith outwards. The main result of the present study is related with the observation that for the same cambial age, annual ring width has no significant influence on EBD, confirming that its utility as a predictor of the quality of timber is highly questionable, at least if the ring curvature is not considered.

To demonstrate the effect of excess soil moisture on the decline of a coastal Pinus thunbergii stand in Oshamanbe, southwestern Hokkaido, Japan, soil moisture content was monitored for 4 years. The saturated hydraulic conductivities (K S) of different soil types (coastal sand, supplied topsoil, and buried concreted andosol) and the distribution of the buried concreted andosol layer were investigated. We also examined needle length to verify the real-time response of P. thunbergii to excess soil moisture. Soil moisture content at the heavily damaged site was more heterogeneous than that at the slightly damaged site, and a sensor near the ground always reported a higher soil moisture content at the heavily damaged site than at the slightly damaged site. The buried concreted andosol layer was always found at the heavily damaged site. The K S of the andosol layer was 10−5, suggesting that this layer is less permeable to water, leading to excess soil moisture at this site. P. thunbergii needles from the heavily damaged site were shorter than those from the slightly damaged site, possibly because of water stress. Together with other symptoms observed at the study sites, i.e., crown dieback and intense lateral growth, this information leads us to conclude that the decline of P. thunbergii stands at the heavily damaged site in Oshamanbe was caused by excess soil moisture due to the less permeable buried concreted andosol layer.  相似文献

We studied the effect of six tree species planted at six different densities on pasture production seven years after establishment. Annual and seasonal pasture production was studied every six months, over three years. Pasture production was lower under conifer trees (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, Pinus pinaster Aiton, Pinus radiata D. Don) than under broadleaved trees (Betula alba L., Quercus rubra L. and Castanea sativa Mill.). Annual pasture production under Pseudotsuga menziesii and Pinus pinaster decreased progressively starting from 952 trees ha−1, while decline in herbage production under Pinus radiata began to occur at 427 trees ha−1. Tree density effect on pasture production was detected at 2,000 trees ha−1 for all of the deciduous species studied. This effect on pasture production was more important in the first six months of the year (June sampling), while from June to December herbage production was less affected by tree density. The tree effect became more noticeable over time, with the last sampling showing the inverse relationship between tree density and herbage production most clearly. Seven years after tree establishment, pasture production was quite consistent under tree densities between 190 trees ha−1 and 556 trees ha−1 and declined remarkably from 556 trees ha−1 to 2,500 trees ha−1. The study also indicated that by the sixth growing season, annual pasture production under different tree species is inversely correlated with tree leaf area index.  相似文献
