Renal dual‐phase computed tomograpic angiography (CTA) is used to assess suitability of feline donors prior to transplantation. A prerequisite for successful CTA is optimal synchronization between the arterial passage of contrast material and CT data acquisition. This retrospective study was conducted to compare quality of renal vascular enhancement at dual‐phase CTA in normal cats between two techniques of timing of data acquisition: the timing‐bolus and the bolus tracking method. Nine cats were scanned using the timing‐bolus technique and 14 with the bolus tracking technique using otherwise similar scanning parameters in a 16‐slice multidetector row CT scanner. The quality of enhancement of the renal vessels at the scanned arterial phase and venous phase was assessed both subjectively and objectively by three board‐certified radiologists. Arterial enhancement was not observed at the scanned arterial phase in three of the nine cats with the timing‐bolus technique but only 1 of the 14 cats with the bolus tracking technique. Early venous enhancement at the scanned arterial phase was common with the bolus tracking technique. Data acquisition was significantly faster with the bolus tracking technique. We conclude that the bolus tracking technique is a valid technique that could be integrated into the routine protocol for 16‐detector row CT renal angiography in cats.  相似文献

Dynamic helical computed tomography (CT) of the pituitary gland can be used to image the three-dimensional shape and dimensions of abnormalities within the pituitary gland. The aim of this study was to develop a protocol for dynamic helical CT of the pituitary gland in healthy dogs as a future reference study for patients with pituitary disease. Dynamic helical series of nine scans of the pituitary gland during and following contrast medium injection were performed in six healthy dogs using the following protocols: a series with 1 mm collimation and a table feed per X-ray tube rotation of 2 mm (pitch of 2) in six dogs, a series with 2 mm collimation and pitch of 2 in three dogs, and a series with 1 mm collimation and pitch of 1 in three other dogs. Multiplanar reconstructions of the images were made using a reconstruction index of 0.5. Images of all series were assessed visually for enhancement of the arteries, the neurohypophysis, and the adenohypophysis. The enhancement pattern of the neurohypophysis was distinguished adequately from that of the adenohypophysis in five dogs that were scanned with 1 mm collimation and pitch of 2, but the difference was less discernable when the other protocols were used. The carotid artery, its trifurcation, and the arterial cerebral circle were best visualized in dorsal reconstructions. Dynamic helical CT of the pituitary gland in healthy dogs can be performed with 1 mm collimation and pitch of 2, and a scan length that includes the entire pituitary region. Using this protocol, with the specific scanner used, the neurohypophysis, the adenohypophysis, and the surrounding vascular structures are adequately visualized.  相似文献

Helical computed tomography angiography was used to evaluate the renal vascular anatomy of potential feline renal donors. One hundred and fourteen computed tomography angiograms were reviewed. The vessels were characterized as single without bifurcation, single with bifurcation, double, or triple. Multiplicity was most commonly seen for the right renal vein (45/114 vs. 3/114 multiple left renal veins, 0/114 multiple right renal arteries, and 8/114 multiple left renal arteries). The right kidney was 13.3 times more likely than the left to have multiple renal veins. Additional vascular variants included double caudal vena cava and an accessory renal artery. For the left kidney, surgery and computed tomography angiography findings were in agreement in 92% of 74 cats. For the right kidney, surgery and computed tomography angiography findings were in agreement in 6/6 cats. Our findings of renal vascular anatomy variations in cats were similar to previous reports in humans. Identifying and recognizing the pattern of distribution of these vessels is important when performing renal transplantation.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance images of two adult domestic short-haired cats were obtained with a whole body scanner. Images of the abdomen were compared with cross-sectional anatomy cadaver specimens from the same two cats. Anatomic structures were first identified on the cadaver specimens with the aid of anatomy texts and references and were then identified and labeled on the magnetic resonance images. Results from this project provide an atlas of normal cross-sectional MRI anatomy of the feline abdomen.  相似文献

Computed tomographic images of two adult domestic short-haired cats were obtained with a whole body scanner. Images of the thorax and abdomen were compared with cross-sectional anatomy cadaver specimens from the same two cats. Anatomic structures were first identified on the cadaver specimens with the aid of numerous anatomy texts and references and were then identified and labeled on the computed tomographic images. Results from this project provide an atlas of normal cross-sectional gross and CT anatomy of the feline thorax and abdomen that can be used in the interpretation of any cross-sectional imaging modality.  相似文献

Accurate interpretation of thoracic magnetic resonance images requires a thorough knowledge of anatomy of this region. The purpose of this communication is to describe the normal cross sectional anatomy of the thoracic cavity of the cat, using MR images, dissections and macroscopic sections. In this study, three cats were used. The animals were anesthetized and positioned in sternal recumbency in the MR scanner. MR imaging was performed at the Special Diagnostic Service of San Roque Clinic of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with a superconducting magnet operating at a field strength of 1.5 Tesla and a human body coil. Spin echo pulse sequences were used to obtain T1-weighted images in tranverse and sagittal planes. At the conclusion of imaging, the cats were euthanatized for medical reasons unrelated to disease of thorax. The cats were frozen and then sectioned using an electric band saw. The cuts were matched as closely as possible to the MR images for identifying the normal planimetric anatomy of the thoracic structures. MR T1-weighted spin echo images provided excellent anatomic appearance of the thorax structures. In MR images the grey scale is directly related to the signal intensity of the thoracic cavity structures. Thus, fat and nerves had higher signal intensity compared with the lower signal intensity of the respiratory system. Bone marrow and muscles had a intermediate signal intensity and appeared gray. The intensity signal of the articular fluid permits a good differentiation of the opposing cartilage surfaces on all MR images. The planimetric or sectional anatomy of the thoracic cavity in the cat allows a correct morphologic and topographic evaluation of the anatomic structures, being helpful tool for the identification of the MR images. The information presented should serve as an initial reference to evaluate MR images of the feline thorax and to assist interpretation of lesions of this region.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to provide an atlas of the normal anatomy of the canine abdomen using helical computed tomographic (CT) images of the abdomen in four mature cross-breed dogs. The dogs were supported in sternal recumbency under general anaesthesia and scans were performed with 5 mm collimation and a pitch of 1. All sections were imaged with soft-tissue window settings and the cranial abdomen was also imaged with mediastinum-vascular window settings. CT scans were performed immediately after iodinated contrast medium was injected into the cephalic vein at 2 mL/kg. Iodinated contrast medium (10 mL/kg) was administered orally 2 h before the scan with a further 3 mL/kg administered immediately prior to scanning. A cross-sectional anatomy atlas was used to identify the structures of the abdominal cavity. Clinically relevant anatomical structures were identified and labelled in the CT images.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine changes in resistive index (RI) and renal size that occur in normal feline kidney autografts in the immediate post-transplant period. Qualitative changes in renal parenchymal echogenicity and pelvic dilation were also noted, although this was not a major focus of the study. Fourteen domestic short-haired cats underwent bilateral nephrectomies followed by an autograft of the right kidney to either the aorta or external iliac artery. Due to post-operative complications, only nine of these cats completed the study. Ultrasonographic determination of the RI and renal size was made before transplantation and on days 1, 4, 7, 10, and 13 following transplantation. No significant changes in renal RI were identified during the study. Renal size increased significantly, peaking at 63% above baseline on day 7, and stayed elevated at 50% above baseline on day 13. There was no evidence of rejection or other abnormalities found on histologic evaluation of the transplanted kidneys. It was concluded that the RI of normal feline renal autografts does not significantly change in the immediate post-operative period. However, significant renal enlargement, likely due to a combination of post-operative edema and hypertrophy, does occur. This study provides baseline information for comparison with feline allografts in the immediate post-transplant period.  相似文献

The vascular anatomy of the reverse saphenous conduit flap in cats was denned by contrast radiography of both hindlimbs of 18 feline cadaver specimens. In all 36 flaps, flow of contrast medium from the femoral artery to the distal end of the flap was documented. Direct anastomosis of the superficial branch of the cranial tibial artery with the cranial branch of the saphenous artery and communication of the caudal branch of the saphenous artery with the perforating metatarsal artery, via the medial and lateral plantar arteries, was documented. The cranial branch of the medial saphenous vein was shown to anastomose with the cranial branch of the lateral saphenous vein. The presence of these anastomoses support the feasibility of the reverse saphenous conduit flap as an option for reconstruction of wounds of the metatarsus in cats.  相似文献

The VetMousetrap?, a novel device that allows computed tomography (CT) of awake cats and provides a clinically supportive environment, is described. Ten normal cats were used to test the device for ambient internal oxygen, carbon dioxide levels, and temperature. Twenty‐two awake normal cats were imaged using a 16‐multi‐slice helical CT unit to evaluate dose‐equivalent protocols. Two different X‐ray tube potentials (kV), 80 and 120, and two different helical pitches, 0.562 and 1.75, were evaluated. The signal intensity of the pulmonary parenchyma (SIlung), signal intensity of background (SIbackgr), contrast, noise, signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR), and contrast‐to‐noise ratio (CNR) were calculated. Three evaluators ranked the images for sharpness of liver margins, motion, helical, and windmill artifacts. CT was successfully completed in 20 of 22 cats. No artifacts directly related to the device were detected. Overall, 75 of 80 (94%) examinations were judged to have absent or minimal motion artifact. A statistically significant difference was found for SNR (P=0.001) and CNR (P=0.001) between all protocols. The higher pitch protocols had significantly lower noise and higher SNR and CNR, lower motion artifact but greater helical artifacts. A protocol using 80 kV, 130 mA, 0.5 s, and 0.562 pitch with 1.25 mm slice thickness, and 0.625 mm slice reconstruction interval is recommended. The VetMousetrap? appears to provide the opportunity for diagnostic CT imaging of the thorax of awake cats.  相似文献

Renal length and width dimensions were determined from survey radiography and excretory urography in 28 cats of various sex and reproductive status. Renal dimensions were expressed as a ratio to the length of the second lumbar vertebra. Renal dimensions were not significantly different when males were compared to females. However, significant differences in renal dimensions between intact and neutered cats were identified. Renal length ratios for neutered cats were: left kidney 2.22 +/- 0.14 (mean +/- standard deviation), right kidney 2.29 +/- 0.14. In intact cats, renal length ratios were: left kidney 2.60 +/- 0.19, right kidney 2.65 +/- 0.24. The mean renal length ratios for neutered cats was smaller than previously reported normal values. Thus, reproductive status should be considered when evaluating feline kidneys for alterations in size. Based on this study, normal feline renal length ratios range from 1.9 to 2.6 for neutered cats and 2.1 to 3.2 for intact cats.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between renal hypoechoic subcapsular thickening observed ultrasonographically and the presence of renal lymphosarcoma in cats. The ultrasonography database was retrospectively searched for cats that underwent ultrasound examination and ultrasound guided needle renal aspirate, renal biopsy, or necropsy. One radiologist unaware of the final diagnosis evaluated the images for the presence of hypoechoic subcapsular thickening and other abnormal findings. Fifty-four cats met the inclusion criteria. Hypoechoic subcapsular thickening was found in 21 cats of which 17 had lymphosarcoma; the remaining four cats had a different diagnosis. Eleven out of 33 cats without hypoechoic subcapsular thickening were positive for lymphosarcoma, and the rest had a different diagnosis. There was a significant association between hypoechoic subcapsular thickening and renal lymphosarcoma (P = 0.001). The positive predictive value of hypoechoic subcapsular thickening for lymphosarcoma was 80.9% and the negative predictive value was 66.7%. The sensitivity and specificity of hypoechoic subcapsular thickening for the diagnosis of renal lymphosarcoma were 60.7% and 84.6%, respectively. The results of this study indicate that the presence of hypoechoic subcapsular thickening in feline kidneys is associated with renal lymphosarcoma.  相似文献

This study was designed to test the feasibility and utility of computed tomography and radiolabeled granulocytes in evaluating the feline pancreas in six normal cats. Autologous granulocytes were labeled with 99mTc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) and injected into each cat. Whole body scintigraphic images were acquired at 1, 5, 15, and 30 minutes, and 1, 2, and 4 hours following injection. The following day, each cat was anesthetized and computed tomographic images of the abdomen were acquired both pre- and post-contrast. Following CT, a surgical pancreatic biopsy was collected. Feline granulocytes were successfully labeled with 99mTc-HMPAO with a labeling efficiency of 15-42% (average of 27%). An average of 5.42 x 10(7) cells in a 2 mL volume were injected into each cat. Less than 1 minute was required to acquire 500,000 count images. Granulocytes distributed predominantly to the lung, spleen and liver in order of decreasing activity. Only background activity was identified in the region of the pancreas. The pancreas was easily identified on CT images of the abdomen. The pancreas was hypoattenuating relative to both the spleen and liver. The pancreas enhanced with the administration of contrast medium, peaking immediately, then gradually clearing over the 30-minute test period. Following contrast medium administration the pancreas remained hypoattenuating relative to the spleen. All biopsies confirmed the absence of pancreatic inflammation in the study cats and no adverse effects were recognized as a result of pancreatic biopsy. Both computed tomography and radiolabeled granulocytes appear to hold promise as imaging procedures for the detection of feline pancreatitis. We predict that these described normal parameters may be altered in the face of inflammation, facilitating detection of feline pancreatitis. Data from cases of suspect feline pancreatitis are needed to evaluate these methods for clinical utility.  相似文献

This study was performed to provide a detailed atlas of the normal arterial and venous canine vasculature in the cranial abdomen by dual‐phase computed tomographic angiography. Five adult beagles were positioned in dorsal recumbency on a multislice helical CT scanner. An unenhanced survey CT scan from the diaphragm to the pelvic inlet was performed. Bolus‐tracking software was used for the dual‐phase angiogram, and contrast medium was administered in a cephalic vein. The arterial phase was scanned from the mid‐abdomen to the cranial aspect of the diaphragm; the portal phase was scanned a few seconds after the arterial phase in the opposite direction. The DICOM studies from all dogs were analysed. Representative images were selected and anatomic structures labelled. Maximum intensity projections and three‐dimensional images were generated using software techniques. A detailed atlas of the venous and arterial vasculature of the cranial canine abdomen was created with the help of bolus‐tracking dual‐phase computed tomographic angiography (CTA). Practitioners can use this anatomic atlas with its detailed venous and arterial phase CT angiograms of the canine cranial abdomen to compare normal versus abnormal vascular anatomy.  相似文献

Anatomic and experimental evaluation of the feline latissimus dorsi muscle was performed to assess its potential use as a free muscle flap. In the anatomic study, nonselective angiography of the subscapular artery was performed in nine heparinized feline cadavers. The muscle dimensions and vascular anatomy of the dissected latissimus dorsi muscle were recorded. In the experimental study four cats underwent heterotopic transplantation of a partial latissimus dorsi flap, and three cats underwent orthotopic transplantation of a complete latissimus dorsi flap. The mean length and width of the latissimus dorsi muscle was 19.0 and 5.4 cm, respectively. The dominant vascular pedicle was the thoracodorsal artery and vein. The average length and diameter of the thoracodorsal artery was 2.7 cm and 0.6 mm, respectively. Minor vascular pedicles were provided by branches of the intercostal arteries. Numerous choke anastomoses existed between the two pedicle systems. Viability of muscle flaps based on subjective evaluation, angiography, and histopathology, was 66% and 100% in the heterotopic and orthotopic studies, respectively. Flap failure seemed to be caused by both arterial and venous thrombosis. The latissimus dorsi muscle flap met criteria required for application in microvascular reconstruction. The vascular pattern was appropriate and consistent. Donor site morbidity was low, whereas surgical accessibility was high. The muscle satisfied the physical criteria of a free flap. Long-term anastomotic patency and flap viability was shown.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the dimensions and volume of thyroid tissue in clinically normal cats by use of computed tomography. ANIMALS: 8 cats. PROCEDURE: Helical computed tomography images (2-mm collimation) were acquired from the cranial aspect of the second cervical vertebra through the caudal aspect of the fourth cervical vertebra. Data were acquired before contrast medium administration (n = 7 cats) and immediately after contrast medium enhancement (1 cat). Length, width, and height measurements of each thyroid lobe were made by use of transverse, dorsal, and sagittal plane images. Thyroid lobe volume was estimated by use of 3 methods. RESULTS: All thyroid lobes were histologically normal. Mean dimensions for a thyroid lobe were 16.5 x 2.00 x 4.31 mm (length x width x height) using only data from transverse images. Mean thyroid lobar volume was 113.75 mm(3) using the sum of areas method. Mean total volume of thyroid tissue was 215.25 mm(3) using the sum of areas method. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results may be useful for computed tomography evaluation of abnormal thyroid glands in cats, which warrants investigation.  相似文献

Two dogs (4 and 38 kg) with radiographic evidence of pulmonary nodules were evaluated using single-slice, helical computed tomography (CT). Each thorax was scanned using 12 combinations of examination parameters that included slice collimation width (3 and 5 mm for the small dog and 5 and 7 mm for the large dog), pitch (1, 1.5, and 2), and reconstruction interval (0.5 and 1). Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for nodule detection were evaluated for each protocol by three different observers, their results being compared with a consensus evaluation of images acquired with the protocol providing the best theoretic resolution (narrow collimation, pitch of 1, reconstruction interval of 0.5). For all observers, sensitivity and accuracy were significantly increased when using a protocol with narrow collimation ( P <0.0001–0.005 and P =0.0003–0.005, respectively). Pitch and reconstruction interval did not significantly influence the accuracy, sensitivity, or specificity for at least two of the observers. Additionally, nodule size (<3 mm vs. ≥3 mm) did not significantly affect nodule detection. Interobserver repeatability was variable among protocols (κ=0.32–0.78), highlighting the fact that nodule detection may be more dependent on the observer than on the choice of the CT protocol. For single-slice CT, the results of this study suggest that narrow collimation (3–5 mm, depending on the animal's size), a pitch of 2 and a reconstruction interval of 1 should be used in dogs for the detection of pulmonary nodules.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe normal feline hypophyseal mensuration and contrast enhancement characteristics using dynamic computed tomography (CT) imaging. An intravenous bolus of an ionic iodinated contrast medium was administered to eight cats using a pressure injector while dynamic CT images were obtained every 5 s for five cats and every 7 s for three cats for a total imaging time of 5 min. Each pituitary was measured at its maximum height and width on the peak contrast medium enhancement image. A hand-drawn region of interest was placed around each hypophysis cerebri and time attenuation curves were generated. The specific enhancement pattern of the hypophysis cerebri for each cat was recorded. The mean width and height of the hypophysis cerebri was 5.2 +/- 0.4 (average +/- SD) mm and 3.1 +/- 0.3 mm, respectively. The mean time to maximum contrast enhancement was 28.6 +/- 14.8 s (range 14-50 s) from the onset of contrast medium injection. Four cats had initial dorsal and peripheral contrast enhancement patterns of the hypophysis cerebri, while four cats had an initial central contrast medium enhancement pattern. The hypophysis cerebri had a homogenous appearance in all cats, 28-50 s after contrast medium injection. The average (+/- SD) clearance half-time was 292 (+/- 87) s. Normal hypophysis cerebri mensuration and contrast medium enhancement characteristics will help in clinical evaluation of the feline hypophysis cerebri.  相似文献
