We tested the effects of species and spacing of nurse trees on the growth of Hopea odorata, a dipterocarp tree indigenous to Southeast Asia, in a two-storied forest management system in northeast Thailand. Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Acacia auriculiformis, and Senna siamea were planted as nurse trees in 1987 at spacings of 4 m × 8 m, 2 m × 8 m, 4 m × 4 m, and 2 m × 4 m in the Sakaerat Silvicultural Research Station of the Royal Forest Department, Thailand. Seedlings of H. odorata were planted in the nurse tree stands at a uniform spacing of 4 m × 4 m and in control plots (no nurse trees) in 1990. Stem numbers of some nurse trees were thinned by half in 1994. The stem diameter and height of all trees were measured annually until 1995 and again in 2007. The mean annual increment (MAI) in volume was estimated as 8.2–10.1 m3 ha−1 year−1 for E. camaldulensis and 0.9–1.2 m3 ha−1 year−1 for S. siamea, smaller than reported elsewhere. This suggests that the site properties were not suitable for them. The MAI of A. auriculiformis was 7.9–9.8 m3 ha−1 year−1, within the reported range. Survival rates of H. odorata in the S. siamea stands and the control plots decreased rapidly during the first 2 years but then stayed constant from 1992. In contrast, survival rates of H. odorata in the E. camaldulensis and A. auriculiformis stands were initially high (>70%), but then decreased after 1995. Stem diameter, tree height, and stand basal area of H. odorata were large in both the S. siamea stands and the control plots from then. The growth of H. odorata was largest in the 2 m × 8 m S. siamea stands. In contrast, it was restricted in the E. camaldulensis and A. auriculiformis stands owing to strong shading by their canopies. Thinning by 50% tended to facilitate the growth of H. odorata temporarily in the E. camaldulensis and A. auriculiformis stands. The stand basal areas of nurse trees and of H. odorata showed a trade-off. These results suggest that the growth of H. odorata was maximized in the S. siamea stands. We assume, however, that the growth of H. odorata could be improved even in the E. camaldulensis and A. auriculiformis stands by frequent or heavy thinning.  相似文献

Overexploitation of the African mahoganies, Khaya anthotheca and K. ivorensis, could lead to their commercial extinction in the near future. Efforts to establish plantations to sustain supply have been discouraged by the shoot borer Hypsipyla robusta Moore. We hypothesized that there is a shade level at which Hypsipyla attack and branching are reduced, but height growth is adequate. We report on the growth of these African mahoganies and Hypsipyla attack under three different forest canopy shade levels: open (55% open sky), medium shade (26% open), and deep shade (11% open). Hypsipyla attack on K. anthotheca was 85%, 11%, and 0% attack in the open, medium, and deep shade treatments, respectively. However, growth in medium and deep shade was slow. Mean tree height for K. anthotheca was 413.8, 126.2, and 54.5 cm in the open, medium and deep shade treatments, respectively. K. ivorensis showed similar trends. The reduced growth under these shade levels limit the use of this strategy for controlling Hypsipyla attack.  相似文献

Attempts at natural forest management of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) have so far met with limited success, whilst many plantations are beset by the shoot borer Hypsipyla spp. In this paper we present preliminary results of an approach to enrichment planting that aims to balance economic returns (rapid growth and good silvicultural form) with intervention costs and changes to forest structure. Mahogany seedlings were planted in gaps created by selective timber harvesting and that ranged in vertical projected area from 91 to 542 m2 (mean = 257 m2). Seedlings grew within the matrix of gap regrowth, with limited control of competing vegetation. Sixty-one percent of seedlings had survived by 4.4 years (equivalent to an annual mortality rate of 10.5% year−1), and had reached a mean height of 4.5 m. Stocking levels of mahogany were similar to that of naturally regenerated commercial species in unplanted gaps of the same age, but mahogany seedlings were significantly taller. The incidence of shoot borer attack on mahogany stems was relatively low (54.7%), but, more importantly, most damaged stems (58%) responded by producing a single replacement leader. The cost of the proposed methodology (US$ 94 per gap over 4.4 years) was low compared to the high value of mahogany timber relative to other species in the forest. The implications of planting mahogany in gaps for forest management and the potential benefits to conservation of the species are considered.  相似文献

Seeds of mahogany and Spanish cedar were planted in gaps created by harvesting railroad ties at two locations in the Yucatan Peninsula. Gaps averaged 40 m2 in area. Germination after 2 months was very low (2%) for Spanish cedar and moderately low (29%) for mahogany at the one location where it was measured, probably due to predation and fungal damage. Annual seedling mortality was 25–40%, and height growth was moderate to normal, with average height equal to 45 cm after 3 or 4 years, depending upon the location. We conclude that gaps from railroad tie harvesting are not adequate for the establishment of either species from seed. If, however, gaps created by harvesting could be concentrated into at least moderately open areas 400 m2 in area or larger, they may be useful as sites for regenerating both species.  相似文献

We examined the relative susceptibility of four mahogany species, Khaya ivorensis, Khaya anthotheca, Entandrophragma angolense, and E. utile, to Hypsipyla robusta attack. Seeds were obtained from one to three parent trees for each species. The research was conducted in the moist semideciduous forest zone in Ghana and used a randomized complete block design. Tree height and diameter and height to first branch were measured until 24 months after out-planting in the field. H. robusta damage was assessed by counting the numbers of shoots attacked, branches, and dead shoots. Khaya spp. grew better but experienced more attack than Entandrophragma spp. The relative susceptibility to H. robusta attack, from most to least, of the four species was: K. anthotheca > K. ivorensis > E. angolense > E. utile. At 24 months, the mean number of shoots attacked per tree ranged from 1.0 for an E. utile seed source to 3.6 on for a K. anthotheca seed source. At 15 months, K. anthotheca and K. ivorensis started branching at about 1.5 m, but height of clear trunk increased over time due to self-pruning. As K. anthotheca grew taller, the number of H. robusta attacks per tree declined. This suggested that selection of genotypes and species that are tolerant of H. robusta attack based on infestation of young plants may not be appropriate. Genetic factors more completely reflecting the response of different species and genotypes to H. robusta attack may manifest themselves at later growth stages.  相似文献

Tropical montane cloud forest has been undergoing a drastic reduction because of its widespread conversion to pastures. Once these forests have been cleared exotic grasses are deliberately introduced for forage production. Exotic grass species commonly form monodominant stands and produce more biomass than native grass species, resulting in the inhibition of secondary succession and tree regeneration. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of native vs. exotic grass species on the early establishment of two native tree seedlings (Mexican alder, Alnus acuminata and Jalapa oak, Quercus xalapensis) on an abandoned farm in central Veracruz, Mexico. Seedling survival and growth were monitored (over 46 weeks) in relation to grass cover and height, and available photosynthetic active radiation (PAR). More seedlings survived in the presence of the native grass Panicum glutinosum than those growing with the exotic grass Cynodon plectostachyus (92% vs. 48%). The causes of seedling mortality varied between species; Q. xalapensis was affected by herbivory by voles but mainly in the exotic grass-dominated stands, whereas A. acuminata seedlings died due to competition with the exotic grass. A. acuminata seedlings increased more in height in the exotic grass-dominated stands (102 ± 7.8 cm) compared to native grass-dominated stands (51 ± 4.7 cm). Grass layer height, cover and available PAR were correlated (Pearson; p < 0.05). In the exotic grass dominated plots, grass layer height was correlated with the relative height growth rates of Q. xalapensis (Pearson; p < 0.05). These results indicate that the exotic grass may be affecting tree regeneration directly (grass competition) and indirectly (higher herbivory). Passive restoration may occur once P. glutinosum dominated pastures are abandoned. However, when C. plectostachyus dominates, introduction of early and mid successional tree seedlings protected against vole damage is needed.  相似文献

Two novel indole C-glycosides, which were the first reported alkaloids C-glycosides from Isatis indigotica, together with five known alkaloids were isolated. The novel alkaloids were elucidated to be indole-3-acetonitrile-4-methoxy-2-C-β-D-glucopyranoside (1) and N-methoxy-indole-3-acetonitrile-2-C-β-D-glucopyranoside (2) on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. 1 exhibited significant cytotoxic activities against human myeloid leukemia HL-60 and human liver cancer HepG2 cells with the IC50 of 1.3 ± 0.1 and 2.1 ± 0.3 μM, respectively. 2 showed potential cytotoxic activities against HL-60 and human myeloid leukemia Mata cells with the IC50 of 5.1 ± 0.4 and 12.1 ± 0.8 μM, respectively.  相似文献

Species richness and species composition of ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi were compared among rehabilitated mine sites and unmined jarrah forest in southwest Western Australia. Species richness, measured in 50 m × 50 m plots, was high. In the wetter, western region, mean species richness per plot in 16-year-old rehabilitated mine sites (63.7 ± 2.5, n = 3) was similar to that of unmined jarrah forest (63.6 ± 9.6, n = 9). In the drier, eastern region, species richness in 12-year-old rehabilitated mine sites (40.3 ± 2.1, n = 3) approached that of nearby forest (52.4 ± 9.3, n = 9). Species composition was analysed by detrended correspondence analysis. Rehabilitated sites of similar age clustered together in the analysis and species composition was closer to the native jarrah forest in the older rehabilitated plots. In unmined forest, species composition of fungal communities in the wetter, western region was different from communities in the drier, eastern region.  相似文献

A new oxysporidinone analogue (1) and a new 3-hydroxyl-2-piperidinone derivative (2), along with the known compounds (−)-4,6′-anhydrooxysporidinone (3), (+)-fusarinolic acid (4), gibepyrone D (5), beauvercin (6),cerevisterol (7), fusaruside (8), and (2S,2′R,3R,3′E,4E,8E)-1-O-D-glucopyranosyl-2-N-(2′-hydroxy-3′-octadecenoyl)-3-hydroxy-9-methyl-4,8-sphingadienine (9) were isolated from Fusarium oxysporum. Compounds 1-9 were evaluated for cytotoxicity using the MTT method against cancer cell lines, PC-3, PANC-1, and A549. Beauvericin showed cytotoxicity against PC-3, PANC-1, and A549 with IC50 value of 49.5 ± 3.8, 47.2 ± 2.9, and 10.4 ± 1.6 μM, respectively. Beauvericin also exhibited anti-bacterial activity towards methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 3.125 μg/mL) and Bacillus subtilis (MIC = 3.125 μg/mL).  相似文献

Liana-dominated forest patches constitute 15–20% of old-growth forests in the Eastern Amazon but are generally excluded from management for timber production. Here we ask if liana-dominated patches may be brought into production by clearing lianas and conducting enrichment planting (EP) of native timber species. We present growth results from 8 years of such EP trials. Rapid growth and low mortality of all species in this study suggest that EP in cleared liana patches can contribute to timber stocks in second and third harvests of managed forests. The most vigorous individuals of Parkiagigantocarpa and Schizolobium amazonicum in each enrichment site grew more than 1 cm diameter per year (rates were initially >2 cm yr−1), and attained dominant canopy positions and diameters equal to those of small canopy trees in the surrounding forest within 8 years of planting (mean dbh ∼18 cm and ∼20 cm, respectively, at year 8). Limited data on Ceiba pentandra plantings indicate a similar trajectory for this species (dbh ∼40 cm in 8 years). The most vigorous Swietenia macrophylla grew at least 1 cm per year in enrichment plots (mean dbh ∼10 cm in 8 years), but take longer to attain dominant positions. Tabebuia serratifolia may take much longer to reach the canopy than other species tested (rates <1 m yr−1). We attribute the excellent performance to light availability; planting in intact soil with minimal compaction and abundant organic material; and low competition rates maintained by periodic thinning of competing vegetation.  相似文献

We estimated water use by the two main oak species of the Lower Galilee region of Israel—Tabor (Quercus ithaburensis) and Kermes (Quercus calliprinos)—to develop management options for climate-change scenarios. The trees were studied in their typical phytosociological associations on different bedrock formations at two sites with the same climatic conditions. Using the heat-pulse method, sap flow velocity was measured in eight trunks (trees) of each species during a number of periods in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Hourly sap flux was integrated to daily transpiration per tree and up-scaled to transpiration at the forest canopy level. The annual courses of daytime transpiration rate were estimated using fitted functions, and annual totals were calculated. Sap flow velocity was higher in Tabor than in Kermes oak, and it was highest in the youngest xylem, declining with depth into the older xylem. Average daytime transpiration rate was 67.9 ± 4.9 l tree−1 d−1, or 0.95 ± 0.07 mm d−1, for Tabor oak, and 22.0 ± 1.7 l tree−1d−1, or 0.73 ± 0.05 mm d−1, for Kermes oak. Differences between the two oak species in their forest canopy transpiration rates occurred mainly between the end of April and the beginning of October. Annual daytime transpiration was estimated to be 244 mm year−1 for Tabor oak and 213 mm year−1 for Kermes oak. Adding nocturnal water fluxes, estimated to be 20% of the daytime transpiration, resulted in total annual transpiration of 293 and 256 mm year−1 by Tabor and Kermes oaks, respectively. These amounts constituted 51% and 44%, respectively, of the 578 mm year−1 average annual rainfall in the region. The two species differed in their root morphology. Tabor oak roots did not penetrate the bedrock but were concentrated along the soil–rock interface within soil pockets. In contrast, the root system of Kermes oak grew deeper via fissures and crevices in the bedrock system and achieved direct contact with the deeper bedrock layers. Despite differences between the two sites in soil–bedrock lithological properties, and differences in the woody structure, annual water use by the two forest types was fairly similar. Because stocking density of the Tabor oak forests is strongly related to bedrock characteristics, thinning as a management tool will not change partitioning of the rainfall between different soil pockets, and hence soil water availability to the trees. In contrast, thinning of Kermes oak forests is expected to raise water availability to the remaining trees.  相似文献

Allometric equations have been developed for various different vegetation types but have rarely been validated in the field and never for dry tropical forest such as caatinga. In three areas of semi-arid Brazil, with regenerating caatinga vegetation, we measured and weighed twelve hundred individuals of four tree species and used the data to validate equations previously determined in mature caatinga. They and several other equations developed for tropical vegetations overestimate the biomass (B) of trees from the regeneration areas by more than 20%, possibly because these trees have reduced crowns, with lower branch masses. We then determined new allometric equations for them, validating equations for one site against data of the others and pooling the data if they were cross-validated. The best equations were power ones, based on diameter at breast height (D), with little improvement by including height, crown area and/or wood density (Caesalpinia pyramidalis, B = 0.3129D1.8838; Croton sonderianus, B = 0.4171D1.5601; Mimosa ophthalmocentra, B = 0.4369D1.8493; and Mimosa tenuiflora, B = 0.3344D1.9648 and 0.4138D1.7718).  相似文献

In small-scale plantations (0.5–2 ha) of Swietenia macrophylla King (big-leaf mahogany) and Cedrela odorata L. (Spanish cedar) in the southern Yucatan Peninsula, we evaluated whether the proportion of Hypsipyla grandella (mahogany shoot borer) was affected by the species used in the plantation (S. macrophylla, C. odorata or both) or by the density and height of individuals planted. We found that the proportion of infected individuals did not differ between the species used in plantations, either planted as monocultures or in mixed plantations. The proportion of infected S. macrophylla and C. odorata individuals in plantations differed among locations and was affected by the mean height of planted individuals, but was not affected by the density of individuals planted.  相似文献

Agave cupreata is harvested from tropical dry forests, oak forests, and other habitats by rural communities in the Chilapa region of Guerrero, Mexico to make mescal, a traditional and culturally important liquor. Local management systems use various techniques to regulate Agave harvest and encourage regeneration, including the exclusion of cattle. This study examines the impacts of cattle exclusion and of the different habitat types on the population structure and density of A. cupreata. Sampling was conducted in pastures, oak forest, tropical dry forest, and mixed oak-tropical dry forest using 54 transects of 1000 m2, where Agave was counted by size-class and measurements were taken of the vegetation and physical environment. Transects were divided between areas with cattle present and cattle excluded in all four habitats except for oak forest, where all areas were open to cattle. Agave density per 1000 m2 was highest in pasture (148 ± 5, mean ± SE), followed by oak forest (100 ± 4), tropical dry forest (88 ± 5) and mixed oak-dry forest (81 ± 2). The size-class structures of Agave populations were also significantly different between vegetation types, with oak forest supporting higher seedling densities but lower numbers of juveniles. A regression subset selection algorithm showed that one of the most important factors influencing Agave populations was the presence of cattle, which can reduce densities by trampling and grazing on seedlings and floral stalks. Cattle presence significantly lowered Agave densities in the smaller size classes in all vegetation types but did not significantly alter size-class structure. Total Agave density per 1000 m2 was significantly higher in transects where cattle were absent (148 ± 4) than where cattle were present (81 ± 1). In all areas sampled, the high number of juveniles relative to other size-classes suggests that Agave populations are successfully regenerating in the Chilapa region, and the higher Agave densities in fenced areas suggest that local management techniques are effectively increasing Agave yields. These results highlight the potential for sustainable management of Agave to conserve forest habitats while also providing important income from mescal to local communities in the region.  相似文献

The selection criteria for the first generations in the Portuguese Pinus pinaster improvement program have been the growth rate and form traits. In this work we study the consequences of this selection on wood quality traits. This study assesses genetic and phenotypic correlation between growth, wood density components, lignin content and mechanical traits (radial modulus of elasticity and radial modulus of rupture) of 46 half sib families from a progeny trail located in Leiria, Portugal, originated from seed collected in a clonal seed orchard. A total of 552 seventeen-years-old trees (about half of full rotation age) were sampled at 2 m height. Height measured at 12 years old presented a higher genetic control (h2 = 0.34) relatively to DBH, measured at 12 and 17 years old respectively (h2 = 0.17 and h2 = 0.15). The results of this study also showed that DBH growth is more dependent on latewood components than earlywood components and that higher growth in Mediterranean regions can be due to an increase of the period of latewood formation. Further, we can conclude genetic selection based on growth will not result in a decrease of wood density, will not affect the occurrence of spiral grain, and is possible to obtain an increase in the radial modulus of elasticity. The present study also showed that it is possible to select for increased growth with lower lignin proportion. Results also suggest that selection for growth at 12 years will probably not affect negatively the wood properties at 17 years.  相似文献

Macrotermes termitaria are conspicuous features of savannah ecosystems in the Sudanian and Sahelian zones of West Africa. The mounds, alive or abandoned, are a major source of heterogeneity in the landscape. The purpose of the present study was to assess the impact of termitaria on tree community in a state forest of the Sudanian regional centre (Tiogo forest, Burkina Faso), under controlled burning and grazing experiments. A comparative inventory was carried out in a split-plot experiment (16 subplots of 2500 m2): 8 subplots where fire regime and grazing were controlled and 8 subplots exposed to grazing and with annual prescribed fire since 1992. All tree individuals (≥1.5 m) were recorded, both on termitaria and outside and their basal area at stump level was measured. A total of 61 observed (or 65.7 ± 2.4 estimated) tree species were recorded on 28 Macrotermes subhyalinus mounds (54 observed species or 60.8 ± 3.3 estimated), the immediate surroundings (44 observed and 59.0 ± 0.0 estimated species) and the rest of subplots (56 observed and 63.6 ± 0.0 estimated). Specific density was higher on mounds in comparison with the surroundings (P < 0.05). Results showed that termitaria played a key role in maintaining higher species diversity as compared to their surroundings (P < 0.05). Differences in species diversity between termitaria and immediate surroundings appeared more pronounced in disturbed plots (submitted to both fire and grazing). Some species, such as Tamarindus indica, Boscia senegalensis, Cadaba farinosa, Capparis sepiaria and Maerua angolensis are found solely on termitaria. Besides, the density of trees was significantly higher on termitaria compared to the surrounding (P < 0.05), as well as total basal area per unit of 100 m2 area (P < 0.05). We concluded that Macrotermes termitaria play an important role as a source of heterogeneity in this Sudanian savannah woodland ecosystem. This role is particularly important in ecosystems under stresses. Termitaria acted as refuge for tree vegetation. The density and dynamics of M. subhyalinus termitaria should, therefore, be taken into account in the global strategy of the forest resources management and conservation.  相似文献

Treelines are advancing on a global scale and encroaching upon alpine ecosystems. Browsing by vertebrate herbivores could affect treeline dynamics and forest expansion by limiting growth of trees. However, this has not been experimentally investigated, and due to a combination of herbivore behaviour and plant responses to herbivory, is unlikely to be a simple relationship. A long term (8 years of manipulation), large scale (0.3 km2) sheep enclosure experiment, in the Scandes of Norway, was used to investigate the effect of three densities of sheep (no sheep, low and high densities with respectively 0, 25 and 80 sheep km−2) on tree growth within a mountain birch (Betula pubescens tortuosa) treeline ecotone. Birch trees were most likely to be browsed at intermediate heights of around 100-130 cm and the likelihood of an individual being browsed did not differ between low and high sheep densities. However, when browsed, the intensity of browsing increased with sheep density. High densities of sheep reduced the net annual shoot growth of young mountain birch in comparison to growth in the absence of sheep. The long-term height growth of smaller mountain birch (stem diameter < 15 mm) was also reduced at high densities of sheep, but the height growth of larger birch was resistant to browsing, even though these trees were on average still within browsing height. This study shows that susceptibility to browsing in birch decreases with size, but by restraining the height growth of trees high densities of sheep can keep trees at heights at which they remain susceptible to browsing. Reductions in livestock density over a period as short as 8 years can thus facilitate altitudinal forest expansion.  相似文献

A new secoiridoid named chinensisol (1) along with twenty known compounds were isolated from the 95% ethanol extract of Cortex fraxini. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of NMR, MS, IR and UV spectral evidences. The quinone reductase (QR) inducing activities of the compounds were evaluated and the results showed that compounds 1, 9 and 14 had moderate QR inducing activities with CD values (concentration required to double the specific activity of QR) of 72.4 ± 7.7, 34.3 ± 3.3 and 42.0 ± 0.4 μM respectively.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare carbon sequestration between moso bamboo (Phyllostachys heterocycla) and China fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) forests. The study site was located in the lower mountain area of central Taiwan, where both moso bamboo and China fir were rich. In addition, moso bamboo and China fir forests were surveyed on 12 and 19 plantations, respectively. We predicted carbon sequestration based on the allometric model for moso bamboo and China fir forests and compared the relationships between characteristics of bamboo forests and elevation. The results showed that mean diameter at breast height (DBH), culms per hectare and aboveground biomass were not clearly affected by elevation, whereas a negative correlation (R = −0.600, p = 0.039) between mean DBH and stand density was found for moso bamboo forests. Moreover, the aboveground carbon storage was higher for China fir forests than for moso bamboo (99.5 vs. 40.6 Mg ha−1). However, moso bamboo is an uneven-aged stand which is only composed of 1-5-year-old culms, while China fir is an even-aged stand and the age range is from 15 to 54 years, such that, per year, the mean aboveground carbon sequestration is 8.13 ± 2.15 and 3.35 ± 2.02 Mg ha−1 for moso bamboo and China fir, respectively. On the other hand, the mean carbon sequestration of China fir decreases with increasing the age class. Furthermore, the ratio of moso bamboo to China fir is 2.39 and a T-test showed that the aboveground carbon levels were significantly different between these two species; thus, moso bamboo is a species with high potential for carbon sequestration.  相似文献
