An observational technique for measuring pasture palatability is described in which a palatability index is constructed to indicate the species selected by stock under specified conditions of choice. The index differentiates these species from others that stock are prepared to eat when opportunities for selection are more limited. The potential usefulness of this index in the initial testing of tropical pasture species is discussed.
Results are reported from two 3-year experiments where the method was used. Coefficients of variationin individualgrazingsranged from 13·5 to 22·2% with experimental meansof 19·2 and 18·3%. Hyparrhenia rufa and Cenchrus ciliaris were found to be the m6st consistently palatable of the grasses offered.  相似文献

The effects of variety, date of cutting flush growth and level of nitrogenous manuring on the crude-protein content of Italian ryegrass were studied on plots cut five times in 1958.
Raising the level of nitrogenous fertilizer from 174 lb. to 348 1b. N/acre reduced the percentage of dry matter from 0·5 to 2·0 and increased the percentage of crude protein in the dry matter from 0·9 to 5·1, with net increases in crude protein/fresh material of from 0·06 to 0·57%. Varieties showed consistent differences, the three Westcrwolth types, New Zealand H.I and New Zealand Italian being higher in percentage crude protein than Ayrshire, Irish, Danish and S22.
Culling the flush growth earlier resulted in an increased percentage of crude protein for that particular cut, but no overall increase in mean crude-protein percentage.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as a rapid and reliable method for estimating quality parameters in white clover ( Trifolium repens ). NIRS calibrations were derived for ash, crude protein (CP), crude fibre (CF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) acid detergent lignin (ADL). To maximize variability, the set of samples for analysis was selected from field plots, harvested in two contrasting environmental locations over a period of 5 years. The samples were scanned using a NIR-Systems model 5000 monochromator. A total of 145 samples was used to calibrate and cross-validate the equations derived. A separate independent set (sixty-five samples) was used for testing the predictions. Standard errors of calibration and cross-validation, expressed as percentages of the mean, were 3·5 and 5·5 for ash, 3·0 and 4·2 for CP, 4·4 and 5·0 for CF, 3·7 and 4·7 for NDF, 3·3 and 4·2 for ADF and 14 and 16 for ADL respectively. The NIRS calibrations obtained from this study have the potential to be used in breeding programmes to assess the quality of white clover and for agronomic evaluations.  相似文献

Irrigated plots of a mixed sward of four grasses and white clover were cut to a height of 3 cm in either June, August, October, December or February. The plots cut at each commencement date were harvested when the height of growth of the pasture was either 10, 18, 25, 32, 40, 48 or 55 cm. At each harvest, the pasture was cut at 7 to 8 cm intervals down to a height of 3 cm. DM production, botanical composition, in vitro digestibility (DOM) and CP of each layer was determined. DM production declined from the lower to the upper layers for pastures shorter than 32 cm. For pastures taller than 32 cm, DM production declined from the lower to the middle layers, then increased in the upper layers, due mainly to the presence of seed heads. Maximum percentages of DOM and CP were observed for the middle layers of the pastures taller than 25 cm. For pastures shorter than 25 cm, DOM and CP percentages increased from the lower to the upper layers, for all commencement dates. The percentages of DOM and CP of each layer decreased as the height of growth increased. The percentage of DOM showed a positive correlation with the percentages of Lolium perenne, Bromus unioloides and Trifolium repens, and a negative correlation with the percentages of Paspalum dilatatum and chlorotic material. The percentage of CP showed a positive correlation with the percentages of Paspalum dilatatum, Dactylis glomerata and Trifolium repens and a negative correlation with the percentages of chlorotic material and the total of the four grasses within the pasture layers. The lower layers of the pasture produced large quantities of DM and, despite the lower in vitro digestibility of these layers, they produced more DOM than the other pasture layers. The DOM production of the pasture increased with increasing height of growth, but decreased as the commencement date was altered from winter through to the end of summer.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out in Guadeloupe to estimate the organic matter intake (OMI) and digestibility (OMD) of a Dichanthium spp. sward, grazed by tethered Creole heifers [mean live weight (LW) 202 ± 2·0 kg], at three daily herbage allowances. Experiment 1 examined herbage allowances of 16, 25 and 31 kg of dry matter (DM) d–1 on a fertilized sward at 21 days of regrowth whereas, in experiment 2, lower allowances of 11, 15 and 19 kg DM d–1 were examined on the same sward, which was unfertilized and grazed at 14 days of regrowth. In each experiment, the herbage was grazed with three groups of two heifers in a 3 × 3 Latin square design. Sward characteristics were described before grazing. OMI was calculated from total faecal output, and OMD was predicted from the crude protein (CP) content of the faeces. The amount of herbage defoliated by the heifers was also estimated on tillers selected at random.
Organic matter intakes were on average 26 g and 19 g OM kg–1 LW, and OMD values were 0·740 and 0·665 for Experiments 1 and 2, respectively, and were not affected by allowance. In Experiment 1, the herbage quality was high [0·50 of leaf and 116 g CP kg–1 organic matter (OM)] for a tropical forage, whereas in Experiment 2, the quality of the herbage (0·27 of leaf and 73 g CP kg–1 OM) was lower. These differences were reflected in differences in intake and digestibility in the two experiments.
The experimental tropical Dichanthium spp. swards can have intake characteristics similar to those of a temperate sward.  相似文献

Changes in the crude protein (CP) concentration of white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage from a mixed sward were determined on six sampling dates from May to October in each of 2 years. The swards were grown without fertilizer N in an organic farming system and continuously grazed by dairy cows during the grazing season. The annual mean contents of white clover in the dry matter (DM) of the sward were 272·3 and 307·0 g kg−1 in Years 1 and 2. The mean CP concentrations of the white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage were 251·6 and 151·9 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and 271·9 and 174·0 g kg−1 DM in Year 2 respectively. The CP concentration of the white clover increased significantly during the grazing season from 220·0 to 284·1 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 269·0 to 315·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. In the perennial ryegrass herbage the CP concentration increased from 112·2 to 172·6 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 142·7 to 239·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. The rate of increase during the season in the CP concentration of the perennial ryegrass herbage was similar to the rate of increase recorded in the white clover herbage.  相似文献

Sorghum almum, Digitaria decumbens and Panicum maximum were fed in fresh, frozen (−20 C) or dried (85° C) form to 21 wethers in metabolism cages. Neither freezing nor drying had a significant (P>0·05) effect on voluntary intake, dry-matter digestibility or organic-matter digestibility. Drying depressed the apparent digestibility of the nitrogen in all grasses but only in the case of D. decumbens was this significant (P<0·05). Freezing also depressed the apparent digestibility of N while both freezing and drying reduced N retention, compared with the fresh feed. None of these differences was significant.
Freezing and drying are thus methods of pasture preservation that can be used to study the intake and dry-matter digestibility of tropical pastures, but both methods may introduce bias into the measurement of N digestibility and retention.  相似文献

Procedures used to determine chemical composition and digestible organic matter in dry matter (DOMD) are slow and expensive. The possibility of using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as an alternative procedure was investigated with annual legumes. Material from cultivars of Medicago murex, Trifolium balansae, T. resupinatum and T. subterraneum was harvested soon after plants had matured. Samples were sorted into stem, leaf and burr fractions and analysed chemically and by NIRS. Data were then sorted into two similar sets, one of which was for calibration and the other for validation. Data for each chemical fraction, in samples used for calibration, were regressed sequentially against the corresponding reflectance spectral data, the log of there reciprocal of which was transformed to first or second derivatives. Equations of best fit were then used to predict the composition of samples in the validation set.
Standard errors of calibration and validation respectively, expressed as percentages of the mean, were 0·5 and 0·6 for dry matter (DM), 2·0 and 2·6 for organic matter (OM), 4·8 and 4·3 for DOMD, 6·0 and 7·2 for crude protein, 4·1 and 4·4 for acid-detergent fibre (ADF), 2·5 and 3·1 for neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) and 8·9 and 10·9 for lignin.  相似文献

Nutritive value and voluntary intake of legumes are generally considered to be higher than those of grasses when ensiled at similar digestibility, although high levels of soluble protein can result in low N utilization by animals and high losses to the environment. The objectives of this experiment were to describe the optimum combination of Westerwolds ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum Lam. cv. Aubade) and lucerne ( Medicago sativa L. cv. AC Caribou) silages to maximize liveweight gain of steers fed silage, determine chemical components that are important and ascertain whether steers selected the optimum mixture when given a choice. Both silages contained similar concentrations of dry matter (DM), acid-detergent fibre (ADF) and organic acids, but lucerne silage had higher concentrations of N, soluble-N and ammonia-N. Westerwolds ryegrass silage contained more neutral-detergent fibre (NDF). In a 12-week experiment, voluntary intake by Hereford steers was not influenced when the proportion of the two silages was changed from 1 to 0 in 0·25 increments. However, liveweight gain and feed efficiency increased linearly ( P  < 0·001) as the proportion of ryegrass silage fed was increased. When preconditioned to either of the two silages, steers showed a significant preference for ryegrass over lucerne ( P  < 0·05). When conditioned to a mixture of both silages, no preference was elicited. It is suggested that extensive solubilization and deamination of protein in the lucerne silage may have caused the preference for Westerwolds ryegrass silage and the higher liveweight gains on diets containing higher proportions of Westerwolds ryegrass silage.  相似文献

Temperate pasture legumes (e.g. Trifolium and Medicago spp.) often have a higher phosphorus (P) requirement for maximum productivity than pasture grasses. This is partly attributed to differences between legumes and grasses in their ability to acquire P from soil. We are the first to report differences in root morphology traits important for soil P acquisition in a range of novel pasture legumes being developed for use in temperate pastures of southern Australia. Up to a 3·6‐fold range in specific root length (SRL) (79–281 m root g?1 root) and 6·1‐fold range in root hair length (RHL) (0·12–0·75 mm) was found between the pasture species. The commonly used Trifolium subterraneum and Medicago sativa had relatively low SRLs and short root hairs, while Ornithopus compressus, O. sativus and Biserrula pelecinus had RHLs and SRLs more similar to those of two grass species that were also assessed. Specific root length was highly correlated with average root diameter, and root traits were relatively stable at different plant ages. We surmise that large differences among pasture legume species in the effective volume of soil explored could translate into significant differences in their critical P requirements (i.e. soil P concentration to achieve 90% of maximum shoot yield).  相似文献

In two experiments, ewes in weeks 1–20 of lactation received either pasture only or pasture plus ad libitum conserved forage. Herbage height was maintained at 3·3–3·4 cm on both treatments by manipulation of stocking rate in the 24 plots (twelve per treatment) used for the experiment with additional ewes and lambs. In experiment 1, silage, which was of lower metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) contents than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 375 g dry matter (DM) ewe−1 d−1. In experiment 2 a strawmix, containing (g kg −1 freshweight) 480 g barley straw, 300 g concentrate and 220 g molasses, again with a lower ME and CP content than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 165 g DM ewe −1 d −1. In both experiments ewes not receiving forage lost weight whereas those with forage gained weight and tended to have increased body condition scores. Offering silage or strawmix did not affect lamb liveweight gain or stocking rate.  相似文献

Over a 24-week period during the 1986 summer, three groups of January- to March-calving dairy cows were either grazed conventionally (G) or grazed between morning and afternoon milkings and housed overnight and offered grass silage (Si) or a straw/concentrate mixture (St) ad libitum. The straw/concentrate mixture contained proportionately, 0-33 long barley straw, 0·28 ground barley, 0·12 soya bean meal, 0·25 molaferm and 0·22 minerals. The metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) contents of the silage fed in weeks 1-8 and weeks 9-24 were 9-5 and 10−6 MJ kg MD−1 and 160 and 191 g kg DM−1 respectively. The straw mix had an ME content of 10−1 MJ kg DM−1 and CP content of 134 g kg DM−1. Partial storage feeding with silage or a straw/concentrate mixture led to a decrease in estimated herbage DM intake. The feeding of the straw/concentrate mixture increased total DM intake, but the estimated total ME intake was similar for treatments G and St. The intakes (kg DM d−1) for treatments G, Si and St were respectively, herbage 11·7,6·8,4·1; total l3·5,13·6,15·0; total ME intake (MJd−1) 163, 155, 163.
Animal performance was, for treatments G, Si and St respectively: milk yield (kg d−1) 19·2, 17·5, 19·1 (s.e.d. 0-87); milk fat content (g kg−1) 36·9, 37·6, 37.1 (s.e.d. 1.22); milk protein content (g kg−1) 35·3, 32·9, 33·4 (s.e.d. 0·76).  相似文献

In two experiments weaned entire ram lambs were offered either pasture alone or pasture plus ad libitum conserved forage for 7–12 weeks during the finishing period. Herbage height was maintained at 3·2 cm on both treatments by manipulation of stocking rate in the twenty-four plots (twelve per treatment) used for the experiment. In experiment 1 silage, which was of lower metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) content than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 194 g DM head−1 d−1, providing approximately 40% of total DM intake requirements. In experiment 2 a strawmix, containing (g k g −1 freshweight) 450 g barley straw, 300 g concentrate and 250 g molasses and again with a lower ME and CP content than the grazed herbage, was consumed at an average of 57 g DM head−1 d−1, providing approximately 11% of total DM intake requirements. In both experiments stocking rate was increased by 20–25% by providing forage, but lamb growth rate was not affected.  相似文献

The development of efficient forage management and utilization is facilitated by a knowledge of the changes in nutritive value and patterns of dry matter (DM) distribution within plants. The objectives of this experiment were to determine the patterns of DM accumulation and the change in nutritive value during maturation of crimson clover ( Trifolium incarnatum L.), a cool-season annual forage legume adapted to mild winter areas and acid soils. Crimson clover was established on a Dystric Eurocrept soil with pH 5·4 in Galicia, north-western Spain, during three consecutive years (1990–92). Shoot samples were taken at approximately biweekly intervals in the spring and summer after autumn sowing, and were separated into stems, leaves and seed pods. DM accumulation, crude protein (CP) and acid-detergent fibre (ADF) concentrations and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) were determined for each plant part at each stage. Average annual DM production at initial flowering was 4·2 t ha–1, whereas the CP and ADF concentrations and IVOMD values were 134 g kg–1 DM, 302 g kg–1 DM and 0·720 respectively. The nutritive value declined with age, coinciding with a reduction in leaf:stem ratio (from 0·53 at the vegetative stage to 0·13 at the ripe seed stage). This decline was more rapid than that reported for other legumes, possibly because of the low leaf:stem ratio of crimson clover. However, as it is used in the Atlantic coastal areas of north-western Spain, where it is harvested around initial flowering, it can provide forage of good quality.  相似文献

Three first-harvest grass silages made from S23 perennial ryegrass cut on 25 May, 13 June and 25 June, and termed early, medium and late silages respectively, were compared in a 16-week feeding experiment with fourteen Ayrshire cows. The early, medium and late silages had D-values of 71·2, 65·0 and 62·5 respectively. The early silage was offered alone, whereas the medium and late silages were supplemented with a concentrate containing 208 g crude protein per kg DM at rates of 2, 3 and 4 kg per 10 kg milk. Silage DM intake was 12·8 kg per cow per d on the early silage treatment, and decreased progressively as concentrate intake increased on the other silage treatments. The mean daily milk yields were 16·0 kg per cow in the early silage treatment, 17·0, 18·4 and 20·4 kg per cow in the medium silage treatments, and 16·8, 18·1 and 20·2 kg per cow in the late silage treatments on the 2-, 3- and 4-kg concentrate treatments respectively. Fat concentration in the milk was not affected significantly by treatment, whereas the CP and SNF concentrations increased progressively and significantly as supplementary feeding increased. From the relationship between milk yield and concentrate intake it was calculated that the medium and late silages required a daily concentrate supplement of 2·1 kg DM per cow to give the same daily milk yields as the early silage.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to examine the effect of supplementation on the performance of spring-calving dairy cows grazing swards of differing perennial ryegrass and white clover content. Seventeen heifers and sixty-four Friesian cows in their third to ninth week of lactation were turned out onto one of three pastures with different proportions of perennial ryegrass and white clover. Nine animals on each pasture received either 0, 2 or 4 kg d−1 of a concentrate with a crude protein concentration of 180 g kg−1 dry matter (DM). Prior to grazing, swards contained proportionately 0·01 (L), 0·15 (M) and 0·20 (H) of total DM as clover. During the experiment, grazing pressures were adjusted by movement of buffer fences to maintain compressed sward heights at 6 cm. Samples taken 26 and 68 d after the start of grazing showed little change in the proportion of clover in sward L (< 0·01 and 0·02 respectively), but convergence in the proportion of clover in swards M and L (0·08-0·16 and 0·10-0·15 respectively). Mean daily yields of milk, fat, protein and lactose increased significantly with increased clover content and, even without supplementation, daily yields were 25·4, 0·98, 0·73 and 1·09 kg respectively on sward H. Of the milk components, only protein was significantly increased by increasing sward clover content. The response in milk yield to supplementation was greater on sward L than on swards M and H.  相似文献

An account is given of the climate, vegetation and native pastures of the beef-cattle regions of Argentina. Though some of these native pastures have a satisfactory carrying capacity, most of them are defective in quality or low in productivity; there is considerable scope for increasing production through the establishment of sown pastures. Trials have been made with a wide range of grasses and legumes, principally of African and European origin. Though the pattern of species to be used in these regions is imperfectly resolved, the authors present a map showing tentative boundaries for temperate, sub-tropical and tropical species. Work to date suggests that pasture development can probably proceed over great areas without the use of fertilizers, and this adds to the attractiveness of pasture programmes. A problem of no less importance than the technical aspects of pasture improvement is that of gaining a greater investment of capital into the development of cattle estancias.  相似文献

Changes in livestock production systems have led to land‐use changes and abandonment, especially of semi‐natural grassland in agriculturally less favoured regions. The generation of energy from biomass of extensive, high‐diversity grasslands can be an alternative to their abandonment, and anaerobic digestion is one possible method for converting grassland biomass into energy. However, little is known about the effects of species richness (SR) and functional groups on chemical constituents relevant for anaerobic digestion and the resulting energy potential. In this study, changes in the herbage chemical constituents that are relevant for forage quality were studied along a well‐defined diversity gradient (one to sixty species) and across different combinations of functional groups (legumes, small herbs, tall herbs and grasses). Substrate‐specific methane yield (CH4 sub) was estimated through the concentrations of forage‐quality parameters such as crude fibre (CF), crude protein (CP), crude lipid, nitrogen‐free extract and their documented digestibility values, as well as the respective methane yields. Results show that with increasing SR, the CF increased and CP decreased, even though these effects could not be fully disentangled from the presence of grasses. These trends led to a negative effect of SR on CH4 sub, while the area‐specific methane yield (CH4 area = CH4 sub × biomass yield) increased due to a strong increase in biomass with increasing SR. The CH4 sub was increased when legumes were present, and it declined with the presence of grasses. Generally, CH4 sub and CH4 area varied between functional‐group monocultures and all functional‐group mixtures.  相似文献
