The present study was conducted in the 1993 grazing season with yearling calves exposed to a pasture with a natural mixed trichostrongyle larval infection. It was shown that daily feeding with the microfungus Duddingtonia flagrans during the first 2 months of the season led to a lowered herbage infectivity and a reduced acquisition of Ostertagia sp. and Cooperia sp. later in the season. In addition, the procedure delayed the onset of clinical disease. This was due to the nematode-destroying effects of the fungi in the dung excreted by the fungus-treated calves, as evidenced by results from a parallel in vitro assay on faecal larval cultures. The paper discusses future research needs before practical biological control can be implemented. 相似文献

The present study was designed to assess the persistent efficacy of ivermectin against gastrointestinal trichostrongyles and lungworm (Dictyocaulus viviparus) when given late in the season to young calves naturally exposed to infection on permanent pasture. The results suggest that ivermectin prevents the re-establishment of Ostertagia spp. for 2 to 3 weeks, but Cooperia spp. for only 1 to 2 weeks. Re-establishment of lungworm is prevented for a period of at least 3 weeks. The results are discussed in the light of recent studies on the ivermectin effects on experimental or early-season natural infections. 相似文献

The prophylactic effect of ivermectin treatment of calves, three weeks after turnout, on gastro-intestinal helminthiasis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
M Eysker 《Veterinary parasitology》1986,22(1-2):95-103
In two grazing experiments carried out in 1982 and 1983 the prophylactic effect on gastro-intestinal helminthiasis of a single ivermectin treatment of calves 3 weeks after turnout was studied in animals which were turned out early on contaminated pasture and in calves which were turned out late on mown pasture. A single ivermectin treatment 3 weeks after early turnout did not prevent heavy helminth infections. However, such single treatment of calves 3 weeks after a late turnout on mown pasture appears to be a promising way of preventing heavy infections. Late turnout on mown pasture without anthelmintic treatment was not enough to prevent heavy infections. Ivermectin treatment was more effective against Ostertagia spp. than against Cooperia spp. There was no effect on the faecal egg output of Nematodirus helvetianus. Predominantly due to the dry summer, infections were lighter in 1983 than in 1982. These lower infections, and possibly also a delay in the onset of inhibition and differences in helminth strains, may explain the lower proportion of inhibited development in Ostertagia spp. in 1983 than in the comparable groups in 1982. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to measure the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of subcutaneously injected 40 IU/ml porcine lente insulin preparation (Caninsulin, Intervet BV, The Netherlands) in diabetic cats. The pharmacological properties of the insulin in poorly controlled or untreated cats were compared with those after several weeks of treatment, to determine if improved diabetic stability altered the pharmacology of this insulin. In addition, the pharmacological properties of intravenously injected 100 IU/ml regular porcine insulin (Actrapid MC, NovoNordisk, Denmark) were measured. Serial plasma samples were collected after subcutaneous injection of porcine lente insulin from 25 diabetic cats in the first week of admission to a 12-month diabetic treatment trial. Samples were also collected after 4 or 8 weeks of treatment, in those cats which had not achieved diabetic remission by this time. At this time, serial plasma samples were also collected from these cats after intravenous injection of porcine regular insulin. Plasma samples were assayed for glucose, anti-insulin antibodies were extracted using a PEG technique, and samples were assayed for insulin using an RIA kit with low sensitivity for endogenous feline insulin, but high sensitivity for exogenous porcine insulin in feline plasma. Caninsulin injected subcutaneously in diabetic cats led to a peak insulin concentration in plasma after 1.7+/-0.1 h, and a nadir of blood glucose after 4.1+/-0.3 h. Insulin and glucose concentrations returned to baseline within 12 h. There was no significant change in the onset or duration of Caninsulin action between the first week of treatment and 5 or 9 weeks of treatment. Actrapid MC injected intravenously had a peak insulin at 0.36+/-0.03 h, and a nadir of blood glucose at 1.9+/-0.3 h. Insulin and glucose returned to baseline within 6 h. It was concluded that Caninsulin injected subcutaneously has suitable pharmacological properties for the twice-daily treatment of diabetes mellitus in cats. In addition, Actrapid MC insulin injected intravenously has suitable pharmacological properties for injection every 4-6 h in diabetic cats. 相似文献

A multicenter field efficacy study was performed in six farms located in Belgium, France and Germany with a history of suspected coccidiosis outbreaks and the proven presence of Eimeria bovis and/or Eimeria zuernii. At each of these trial sites the calves were randomly allocated to two groups (T, treated; C, control) of similar size. In total, 231 calves were included in the study. Group T calves (n=116) were drenched with a single dose of diclazuril (Vecoxan, 1mg/kg body weight) close to the time of expected outbreak of coccidiosis (day 1 of the study period), group C calves (n=115) served as placebo-treated controls. Although E. bovis and/or E. zuernii were identified at all trial sites, clinical coccidiosis was only noted in 16% of the group C calves. At day 5 of the study period (4 days after treatment), faecal oocyst counts (opg, oocysts per gram) were substantially lower in group T ("short-term effect") compared to group C. At four trial sites, the respective values of groups T and C were significantly different (P=0.0132 to P=0.0001) in favour of group T. For the pooled data of all trial sites, this effect was highly significant (P<0.0001). The overall faecal oocyst counts from day 3 until day 21 of the study period ("Area Under the Curve") was significantly reduced in group T by 87.2-99.5% ("long-term effect") at five trial sites (P=0.0139 to P<0.0001). The pooled data revealed a highly significant effect of treatment on oocyst excretion over the observation period (P<0.0001). On five of the six trial sites, the average weight gain was higher in group T than in group C. On those trial sites, the average weight gain of group T calves exceeded that of the controls by 95-268g/day and by 2.0-6.0kg over the study period. This effect was statistically significant (P<0.01) at one trial site. Altogether the calves of group T gained on average 129g more weight daily than the controls (+2.7kg over the study period). For these pooled data, statistical analysis confirmed the positive effect of treatment of calves exposed to coccidiosis on growth performance (P=0.003). In conclusion, metaphylactic treatment with diclazuril efficiently controls coccidiosis in calves thus reducing environmental contamination with oocysts and preventing negative effects of natural exposure to coccidiosis on growth performance of calves. 相似文献

A previous study demonstrated that a dietary treatment of young geese with cholesterol and cholic acid raises lipid concentrations in the liver. The present study was carried out to investigate whether such a lipid accumulation caused by those hyperlipidemic compounds can be intensified by low dietary choline concentrations. Therefore, 38 eight-week old geese were divided into four groups of 9 or 10 animals each and received a basal diet poor in choline which consisted predominately of maize and soy protein isolate over a period of 8 weeks. Treatment factors were supplementation of diets with cholesterol and cholic acid (0 vs. 5 g of cholesterol and cholic acid each per kg) and supplementation of choline chloride (0 vs. 1.5 g/kg). Final body weights as well as carcass weights were neither influenced significantly by dietary treatment with cholesterol and cholic acid nor by low dietary choline concentrations. However, feeding diets supplemented with cholesterol and cholic acid markedly increased liver weights (two-fold), hepatic triglyceride (3.7-fold) and cholesterol (12-fold) concentrations and percentages of monounsaturated fatty acids at the expense of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in the liver. In geese fed diets with cholesterol and cholic acid, insufficient choline supply did not intensify, but even slightly reduced hepatic lipid accumulation. Geese fed diets with cholesterol and cholic acid exhibited markedly increased levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids in plasma and very low-density lipoproteins, regardless of the choline supply. Muscle tissue of geese fed diets supplemented with cholesterol and cholic acid exhibited also increased concentrations of triglycerides and cholesterol whereas the fatty acid composition of muscle lipids remained unchanged. Among geese without hyperlipidemic treatment, concentrations of triglycerides in plasma and very low-density lipoproteins as well as the concentrations of phosphatidylcholine in liver and muscle tissue were not reduced by low dietary choline concentrations. Therefore, it is suggested that those animals were able to synthesize endogenous sufficient choline. 相似文献

Twenty four, 21-d-old female pigs were fed diets containing either skim milk powder (CON+), spray-dried bovine colostrum (7.5%, BC+) or spray-dried bovine plasma (7.5%, BP+) and were dosed orally with 1 × 109 CFU of E. coli O149:K88. Another group of 8 unchallenged pigs was fed the skim milk powder diet (CON−). On d 19 of the experiment all piglets were euthanased. Adverse effects of the E. coli challenge were observed variously throughout the small intestine in pigs consuming either the BC+ or BP+ diets. In this experiment, similar responses to the E. coli challenge were observed in both plasma and colostrum fed pigs, which suggests that spray-dried bovine colostrum may be a potential alternative to spray-dried bovine plasma. 相似文献

The effect of route and dosage of immunization on the serological response to a Pasteurella haemolytica and Haemophilus somnus vaccine in feedlot calves 总被引:1,自引:2,他引:1 下载免费PDF全文

The effect of route and dosage of administration on the serological response to a vaccine containing genetically attenuated leukotoxin of Pasteurella haemolytica combined with bacterial extracts of P. haemolytica and Haemophilus somnus (Somnu-Star Ph, Biostar Inc., Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) was evaluated in a controlled field trial in 301 feedlot calves. Vaccination of calves on arrival at the feedlot with Somnu-Star Ph significantly (p < 0.05) increased P. haemolytica and H. somnus serum antibody titers and reduced bovine respiratory disease (BRD) morbidity. A single subcutaneous vaccination with Somnu-Star Ph was as effective in stimulating a humoral antibody response and in reducing BRD morbidity as double vaccination by the intramuscular or the subcutaneous route. Furthermore, there were no swellings or adverse reactions observed with either subcutaneous or intramuscular administration of Somnu-Star Ph.
These results suggest that feedlot calves can be immunized subcutaneously once on arrival with Somnu-Star Ph. Double vaccination was of no added value in this trial, because the majority of BRD morbidity occurred prior to revaccination fourteen days postarrival. Additional larger-sized field trials are needed to monitor the duration of immunity following vaccination and to test the effect of route and dosage of vaccination on mortality.

Two groups of second grazing season cattle, which had been treated with an ivermectin-sustained-release bolus (ISRB) in their first grazing season, were monitored during consecutive years (1995 and 1996) on the same second grazing season pasture. In the preceding year (1994), this pasture had been grazed by yearlings that had not received chemoprophylaxis in their first grazing season. The objectives of the study were, firstly, to investigate whether the chemoprophylactic-treated yearlings were less resistant to gastrointestinal nematodes upon subsequent exposure, and hence excreted more strongyle eggs compared to the control yearlings; secondly, whether an increased susceptibility of the previously treated animals resulted in a yearly increase of the pasture infestation on the second grazing season pasture; and finally, whether this affected the second year weight gain of the animals. In 1996, the yearlings that had been chemoprophylactic-treated in 1995 excreted higher numbers of nematode eggs, compared to the previously ‘untreated' yearlings. In addition, the proportion of Cooperia larvae was markedly higher in the faecal cultures from the chemoprophylactic treated-animals, suggesting a negative effect of preventive treatment with an ISRB on the acquired resistance of the animals. However, there was no evidence that the slightly higher egg output in the previously treated yearlings had an effect on the larval contamination of the second grazing season pasture. A significant yearly decrease in the second season average daily weight gains was observed, but it could not be inferred from the results of the parasitological parameters that the differences in second year growth were caused by different levels of resilience between chemoprophylactic-treated and -untreated animals. As the study covered three consecutive second grazing seasons, an effect of differences between years (e.g. in weather conditions or grass growth) on the results cannot be excluded. 相似文献

AIMS: The aims of this study were (a) to evaluate the effect of xylazine and tolazoline, with and without lignocaine, on the cortisol response of calves following amputation dehorning and (b) to assess the effect of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (ketoprofen) and local anaesthesia on the cortisol response of calves to amputation dehorning. METHODS: Plasma cortisol concentrations were measured in 100 dehorned or non-dehorned 3-month-old calves over an 8-h period following five different sedative/analgesic or control treatments. Sedative/analgesic treatments were: control (no anaesthesia); local anaesthesia and ketoprofen; local anaesthesia and xylazine; local anaesthesia, xylazine and tolazoline; and xylazine only. Within each sedative/analgesic treatment group, half the calves (n=10 per group) were amputation dehorned and half were not dehorned. RESULTS: The change in plasma cortisol concentrations in calves dehorned after being given ketoprofen and local anaesthesia did not differ significantly from that of non-dehorned control calves for at least 8 h. In contrast, the cortisol response of dehorned calves not given analgesic drugs peaked 30 min after dehorning and lasted >4 h. Xylazine injected before dehorning significantly reduced but did not eliminate the peak of the cortisol response. When both xylazine and local anaesthesia were administered before dehorning the peak in the cortisol response was virtually eliminated. In the dehorned calves that received xylazine with or without local anaesthesia, cortisol concentration increased significantly 3 h after dehorning and did not return to baseline until at least 5 h later. When tolazoline was administered shortly after xylazine, it caused a marked cortisol response, higher than the response to any other treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Combining ketoprofen and local anaesthesia minimised the cortisol response, and by inference the pain- induced distress, following amputation dehorning in calves. Xylazine reduced the initial cortisol response to dehorning but not as much as when local anaesthesia was also given. The increase in cortisol concentration from 3–8 h after dehorning in calves given xylazine alone or in combination with local anaesthesia suggests that calves experienced pain-induced distress during this time and that xylazine had no long-term analgesic effect. Tolazoline, used to reverse the sedative effects of xylazine, caused a marked cortisol response in calves via a mechanism which remains unclear. 相似文献

A study was carried out to investigate whether adding a starter culture or a formic acid containing-product to fermented liquid feed of suboptimal microbial quality could improve the characteristics of the mixture and the gastrointestinal ecology and growth performance of piglets. Four experimental diets were prepared: Feed and water were mixed in the ratio 1:2.5 (w/w) in four closed tanks. Diet 1) Three times daily, 50% of the mixture stored in the tank was removed and then replaced with an equal amount of fresh feed and water, (FLF), positive control; Diet 2) Three times daily, 95% of the mixture stored in the tank was removed and then replaced with an equal amount of fresh feed and water. Escherichia coli K12 (1 × 106/g) was added every morning (COLI); Diet 3) as the COLI treatment and added Lactobacillus plantarum VTT E-78076 (1 × 106/g) every morning (+PLANTARUM); and Diet 4) as the COLI treatment and added 0.26 g AIV/KemiSile 2 plus/100 g mixture three times daily (+ACID). One hundred and sixty weaners were used. On day 14, one littermate from each pen was killed and the gastrointestinal tract removed. The remaining piglets were used to measure the effect of the experimental diets on growth performance during the first six weeks post-weaning. The +ACID diet had lower numbers of lactic acid bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae, higher numbers of yeasts, and lower concentration of lactic acid and acetic acid than the COLI and +PLANTARUM diets. Feeding the +PLANTARUM and the +ACID diets increased daily weight gain during the six weeks post-weaning (P ≤ 0.02) compared to feeding the COLI diet. The +ACID group showed the highest numerical daily feed intake in all periods. The gain/feed during the six weeks post-weaning tended to be lowest in the COLI group (P < 0.10). The counts of lactic acid bacteria able to grow at 20 °C were lowest in the stomach (P ≤ 0.003) and distal small intestine (P ≤ 0.06) of the +ACID group. The counts of yeasts able to grow at 37 °C in the stomach were highest in the +ACID (P ≤ 0.01) and FLF groups (P ≤ 0.09). The number of yeasts able to grow at 20 °C in the stomach and distal small intestine was highest in the FLF fed piglets, followed by the +ACID group. This study showed that addition of L. plantarum VTT E-78076 or AIV/KemiSile 2 plus to fermented liquid feed of suboptimal microbial quality improved growth performance without affecting the gastrointestinal ecology of piglets substantially. 相似文献

The association between mean daily weight gain, Theileria parva infections, clinical East Coast fever and other possible determinants of weight gain were examined in a longitudinal observational study that was conducted in cohorts of female calves from five agro-ecological zone (AEZ)-grazing strata. The strata were upper-midlands (UM) 1 zero-grazing, UM 1 open-grazing, UM 2 zero-grazing, UM 4 zero-grazing and UM 4 open-grazing. In total, 225 calves on 188 smallholder dairy farms were visited within the first 2 weeks of life and thereafter at biweekly intervals up to the age of 6 months between March 1995 and August 1996. During each visit, the calves were weighed and other calf-management practices in the farm during the visit such as housing, feeding and tick control also were recorded. Other events such as morbidity and mortality between or during the visits were also recorded. The overall mean daily weight gains were 0.24–0.29 kg (S.D.=0.17–0.22 kg) and were lower than the recommended targets for smallholder farms of 0.40–0.50 kg. The major tendency in variability of daily weight gains was due to visit-to-visit variation (especially in calves >3 months old).Differences in mean daily gains were associated with AEZ-grazing strata and calf-level factors that included breed of calf, calf sickness, incidence of ECF, feeding of milk, concentrate feeds and minerals and interaction between calf age and AEZ-grazing strata (P<0.05). ECF and other calf sicknesses exerted a temporal effect on calf-growth at the height of illness and immediately after; calves later recovered the lost growth except where other factors such as poor calf nutrition prevailed. Improvement in calf-growth in Murang’a District is achievable and extension services should continue to target individual-calf-level management practices. 相似文献

Four Nili-Ravi buffalo calves (100 ± 4 kg) were used in 4 × 4 Latin Square Design to evaluate the influence of varying ruminally degradable protein (RDP) to ruminally undegradable protein (RUP) ratio on dry matter intake (DMI), digestibility and nitrogen (N) metabolism. Four experimental diets A, B, C and D were formulated to contain RDP:RUP of 70:30, 65:35, 60:40 and 55:45, respectively. The calves were fed ad libitum. Dry matter intake by calves fed C diet was higher (P < 0.05) than those fed D diet and lower (P < 0.05) than calves fed A diet, however, it was similar to those fed B diet. There was a linear decrease (P < 0.01) in DMI with decreasing the RDP to RUP ratio. Similar trend was noticed in crude protein (CP) intake. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake was significantly different across all treatment. The decrease in CP and NDF intake was due to decreasing trend of DMI. Dry matter (DM) digestibility in calves fed A and B diets was higher (P < 0.05) than those fed C and D diets. A linear decrease (P < 0.01) in DM digestibility was observed with decreasing the RDP to RUP ratio. Crude protein digestibility remained unaltered across all treatments. Neutral detergent fiber digestibility was higher in calves fed A and B diets than those fed C and D diets. Higher NDF digestibility in calves fed A and B diets was due to higher level of dietary RDP that might resulted in higher ruminal ammonia concentration which stimulate activity of cellulytic bacteria and ultimately increased NDF digestibility. The N retention (g/d) was similar among the calves fed B, C and D diets, however, it was higher (P < 0.05) than those fed A diet. Decreasing the RDP to RUP ratio resulted in linear increase (P < 0.01) in N retention. The N retention, as percent of N intake was significantly different across all treatments. Decreasing RDP to RUP ratio resulted in linear increase (P < 0.01) in N retention, as percent of N intake. A similar trend was noticed in N retention, as percentage of N digestion. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration in calves fed B diet was higher (P < 0.05) than those fed D diet and was lower (P < 0.05) than those fed A diet, however, it was not different from calves fed C diet. Decreasing dietary RDP to RUP ratio resulted in linear decrease (P < 0.05) in BUN concentrations. The decrease in BUN concentration was because of decreasing level of dietary RDP. The N retention can be increased by decreasing RDP to RUP ratio in the diet of growing buffalo calves and diet containing RDP to RUP ratio 55:45 is considered optimum regarding N retention in buffalo calves. 相似文献

This study investigated the effects of early induction of autophagy on embryonic development in pigs. For this, oocytes or embryos were treated with an autophagy inducer, rapamycin (RP), during post‐activation (Pa), in vitro fertilization (IVF) and/or in vitro culture (IVC). When parthenogenesis (PA) embryos were untreated (control) or treated with various concentrations of RP for 4 hr during Pa, 100 nm RP showed a higher blastocyst formation (48.8 ± 2.7%) than the control (34.6 ± 3.0%). When PA embryos were treated during the first 24 hr of IVC, blastocyst formation was increased (p < .05) by 1 and 10 nm RP (61.9 ± 3.0 and 59.6 ± 3.0%, respectively) compared to the control (43.2 ± 1.8%) and 100 nm RP (47.8 ± 3.2%), with a higher embryo cleavage in response to 10 nm RP (87.3 ± 2.4%) than the control (74.1 ± 3.2%). RP treatment during IVC and Pa + IVC showed increased blastocyst formation (44.7 ± 2.5 and 44.1 ± 2.0%, respectively) compared to the control (33.2 ± 2.0%). In addition, RP treatment during Pa and/or IVC increased glutathione content and inversely reduced reactive oxygen species. In IVF, RP treatment for 6 hr during IVF significantly increased embryonic development (34.0 ± 2.6%) compared to the control (24.8 ± 1.6%), but treatment during IVC for 24 hr with RP did not (23.0 ± 3.8%). Autophagy was significantly increased in PA oocytes by the RP treatment during Pa but not altered by the treatment during the first 24 hr of IVC. Overall, RP treatment positively regulated the pre‐implantation development of pig embryos, probably by regulating cellular redox state and stimulating autophagy. 相似文献

The objective of the study was to assess in vitro the influence of various doses of two different antioxidants, α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid, on protective mechanisms against ROS in white blood cells obtained from calves exposed to transport, and to compare these results with those obtained from non-transported animals. The concentrations of lipid peroxidation products in leukocytes and in the retained medium were assessed by determining the level of ThioBarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS). Total antioxidant status in the leukocytes and the medium were estimated using a ferric-reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) assay. Leukocyte viability was determined using the trypan blue reduction test. The study demonstrated that after bovine leukocytes (WBC) were incubated in vitro with α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid, peroxidation intensity decreased and total antioxidant capacity increased. The results of the study reveal that these antioxidants in concentrations over 0.1 mg/ml have a major impact on free radical activity on bovine white blood cells and on cell viability during transport of animals.Based on this study, we suggest that incubation of the leukocytes with antioxidants decreases the oxidative stress development, which can be helpful in protection of the immunological cells during bovine respiratory disease. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pain responses of lambs to mulesing, and the effectiveness of potential analgesic treatments. PROCEDURES: Merino lambs (n=64) were allocated at 5 weeks of age to eight treatment groups: 1) sham mules; 2) conventional mules; 3) topical anaesthetic, incorporating lignocaine, bupivicaine, adrenaline and cetrimide, applied immediately after mulesing; 4) flunixin + topical anaesthetic, with flunixin administered 2.5 mg/kg s.c. 90 min before mulesing; 5) carprofen + topical anaesthetic, with carprofen administered 4 mg/kg s.c. 90 min before mulesing; 6) carprofen, administered as above; 7) flunixin, administered as above; and 8) carprofen + flunixin, administered as above. Plasma cortisol was measured at 0, 0.5, 6, 12 and 24 h relative to mulesing. Animal behaviour, including posture, was recorded for 12 h after mulesing. RESULTS: The conventional mules lambs exhibited large increases in plasma cortisol, reduced lying and increased standing with a hunched back compared with sham mules animals. Topical anaesthetic reduced the cortisol peak to mulesing and hunched standing, and increased lying compared with the conventional mules treatment, but generally did not result in values equivalent to sham mules animals. Carprofen, flunixin, and carprofen + flunixin treatments did not reduce the cortisol response to mulesing but substantially ameliorated some changes in behavioural postures. Flunixin + topical anaesthetic reduced the cortisol peak following mulesing and substantially ameliorated most changes in behavioural postures. Carprofen + topical anaesthetic abolished the cortisol peak following mulesing and substantially ameliorated most changes in behavioural postures. All mulesed animals lost weight in the week after mulesing regardless of analgesic administration, but there were no significant differences in growth rate between any of the eight treatments over the 3 weeks after mulesing. CONCLUSIONS: Analgesics can moderate the pain response of lambs to mulesing. The welfare outcome for lambs of mulesing could be improved by use of a combination of local anaesthetic and long acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. 相似文献

Leishmaniasis from Leishmania infantum is a parasitary zoonotic disease and a serious problem to public health. Guidelines from Italian Health Authority (Istituto Superiore di Sanità) suggest to control the zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis canine reservoir in endemic areas using an association of preventive and therapeutic tools. Moreover, in literature there are no studies about the long term effects on the disease seroprevalence and incidence in relation to this “holistic” approach. Past research has considered the effects of the alternative employment of preventive or therapeutic treatment, usually for limited periods. In this retrospective study the patterns of seroprevalence and incidence of leishmaniasis in a dog shelter sited in an endemic area of Central Italy are described throughout a 4-year period. Both preventive spot-on tools (imidacloprid/permetrin) and therapeutic protocols based on antimonials and allopurinol were administered. The results showed a progressive reduction of prevalence and incidence of serological reactivity to L. infantum, corroborating the effectiveness of the treatment administered to the animals. Significant improvements from the beginning to the end of the 4-year period were reported, considering both prevalence and incidence. A very low rate of relapses (8% in a pool of 67 subjects positive since 2004; 10.2% among all subjects enrolled in the study) was achieved. 相似文献

An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of a lipopoly-saccharide (LPS) of Salmonella typhimurium on the luteal function in 80 days pregnant gilts. Four animals were i.v. injected with 2 μg LPS/kg body weight and 3 animals were i.m. injected with 500 μg cloprostenol (CP). Gilts which maintained pregnancy after the initial injection were reinjected with GP around day 100. Clinical observations were made and plasma levels of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF2α, progesterone, oestradiol-17β and oestrone sulphate were analysed by radioimmunoassay. The LPS induced a characteristic clinical endotoxemia. All LPS treated gilts maintained pregnancy until day 100 when 1 gilt aborted, 1 was emergency slaughtered and 2 reinjected. The comparative injections of CP induced abortion! within 48 h in 2 of 3 gilts at 80 days and in all reinjected animals at 100 days of pregnancy. Progesterone decreased immediately after both LPS and CP injections. In non-aborting gilts, the progesterone decrease had a transient character. The PGF2α metabolite levels responded to LPS by a dramatic surge of approximately 4 h duration. All abortions were accompanied by a massive release of PGF2α reaching peak levels during expulsion of the foetuses. Oestradiol-17ß and oestrone sulphate followed an ascendent pattern between days 80 and 100. Occasional transient decreases in oestradiol-17ß or increases in oestrone sulphate levels after LPS and CP injections were observed in several animals. Abortions were followed by a sharp decrease of both oestrogens. Post-abortum reproductive disorders occurred frequently. Endocrine changes associated with post-abortum ovarian activity were relevant to the clinical and morphological observations. The relationship between the stage of pregnancy in the pig and its endocrine response to abortifacient agents as well as some foetopathic effects of the endotoxin are discussed. 相似文献

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect on milk and cheese fatty acid composition of the inclusion of Chrysanthemum coronarium L., (Asteracea) into dairy sheep diet. Plots sown either with a binary mixture consisting of Lolium rigidum Gaudin and Medicago polymorpha (LM) or a ternary mixture including the above species and C. coronarium were (LMC) grazed by groups of Sarda dairy ewes during May. The botanical composition of diet, as measured by n-alkane method, showed that 34% of LMC group diet consisted of Chrysanthemum flowers and leaves. Exposure of sheep to this non-conventional forage did not affect animal performance and milk composition (fat and casein, P > 0.05) but resulted in different milk and cheese fatty acid composition. In particular conjugated linoleic acid, vaccenic acid and linoleic acid were all higher in LMC than LM groups (P < 0.05). The probable main reason was the higher proportion of linoleic acid in Chrysanthemum forage and hence in LMC than LM diet. 相似文献

Weanling pigs (n = 188) were used in a 5-wk experiment to determine the effects of a bolus of direct fed microbials (DFM) at weaning and/or feeding DFM on growth performance and gastrointestinal histology. Dietary treatments were: 1) basal negative control (NC), 2) Trt. 1 + DFM in a bolus at weaning, 3) Trt. 1 + DFM in the feed for d 1–34, 4) Trt. 1 + DFM in a bolus at weaning, and in the feed for d 1–34, and 5) Trt. 1 + in-feed antibiotics (carbadox, 55 ppm). Dietary antibiotics (Trt. 5) improved ADG (P < 0.05) during phase 2 (d 7–21) compared to pigs fed DFM (Trt. 3). A bolus dose of DFM at weaning, with or without subsequent DFM in the feed (Trt. 2 and 4), resulted in similar growth performance to pigs on Trt. 1 or 5. However, providing DFM in the feed alone (Trt. 4), resulted in a reduced ADG during phases 1 (d 1–7; P < 0.05) and 2 (d 7–21; P < 0.10) compared to pigs fed the antibiotic diet (Trt. 5). Overall ADFI was higher for pigs fed antibiotics (Trt. 5) compared to all other treatments, except pigs given a bolus dose of DFM at weaning and provided with DFM in the feed (Trt. 4). On d 34, duodenal villus height was higher (P < 0.05) for pigs fed the antibiotic diet (Trt. 5) compared to pigs receiving the bolus dose of DFM at weaning with no subsequent treatment (Trt. 2). Ileal crypt depths were greater (P < 0.05) for pigs on the positive control diet (Trt. 5) compared to all other treatments on d 7. Cellular proliferation rates in ileal crypts were increased (P < 0.05) on d 21 for pigs fed antibiotics (Trt. 5) compared to pigs fed the negative control diet (Trt. 1). On d 34, increased ileal crypt proliferation rates (P < 0.05) were observed in pigs receiving DFM through the feed (Trt. 4) only compared to pigs receiving the combination bolus and in-feed DFM (Trt. 5) and pigs fed the negative control diet (Trt. 1). 相似文献
