Cattle heterozygous for deficiency of uridine monophosphate synthase required more breeding services per calving when mated to other heterozygotes than did matings of normal cattle. Gestation length, number of breeding services per calving, and days from breeding to pregnancy examination were monitored on 759 complete gestations, 76 false-positive pregnancy diagnoses, 14 false-negative pregnancy diagnoses, and 413 negative pregnancy diagnoses in a dairy herd between 1983 and 1987. For complete gestations, 15 heterozygote x heterozygote matings required 3.13 +/- 0.37 breeding services per calving, which was significantly more than the 2.05 +/- 0.05 breeding services required for normal x normal matings; gestation length and days from breeding to pregnancy examination were similar between mating types. For false-positive pregnancy diagnoses, females diagnosed pregnant, but subsequently found not to be pregnant, 5 heterozygote x heterozygote matings averaged 51 +/- 23 days of gestation, which was less than the 93 +/- 6 days required for 71 normal matings; services and days from breeding to pregnancy examination were similar between mating types. All false-negative pregnancy diagnoses, females diagnosed not pregnant but later found to be pregnant, were made on cattle with normal matings. For negative pregnancy diagnoses, heterozygous matings averaged 0.3 more breeding services per examination than normal matings.  相似文献

In contrast to the large variation in canine gestation lengths based on mating-to-whelping intervals (56 to 70 days), gestation length based on intervals from the preovulatory LH surge to whelping shows little variation (64 to 66 days). By considering the preovulatory LH surge as the central endocrine event of the fertile cycle, various events can be reasonably timed, including ovulation on day 2, oocyte maturation on day 4, reduced fertility after day 6, implantation around day 17, and development of fetal radiopacity after day 45. Throughout pregnancy, gestation is dependent on ovarian progesterone secretion and, thus, on pituitary LH and prolactin for luteotrophic support. Because prostaglandin F2 alpha is luteolytic in the bitch, it may be involved in the luteolysis observed immediately prepartum in association with rises in maternal cortisol and prolactin levels.  相似文献

An accurate timing of parturition is very useful for managing canine parturition. It is generally accepted that parturition in bitches occurs between 64 and 66 days after the luteinizing hormone peak. In this retrospective study, we determined pregnancy length in different breeds and its influencing factors dating it from the estimated day of ovulation (EDO), defined as the day when peripheral plasma level of progesterone (P4) reaches 6 ng/ml. From January 2001 to December 2006, 162 pregnancies in 151 bitches of 53 different breeds were followed. Different parameters concerning the bitch, the litter, the type of semen and the type of reproduction were studied. The mean estimated pregnancy length in the bitch from EDO to parturition was 63.1±2.1 days. The main influencing factors for the pregnancies studied were the breed, the size of the bitch and the number of puppies within the litter.  相似文献

The influence of exposure to exogenous estradiol on the interval from parturition to first ovulation, luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion and luteal function was examined in cows. Cows were assigned at parturition to one of three treatments. Cows received either a 3.0 (1-E; n = 30) or .75 cm (1/4-E; n = 28) implant containing 17 beta-estradiol or served as untreated control animals (C; n = 33). Implants were administered within 2 days following parturition and removed on day 40 postpartum (day 0 = day of parturition). Single blood samples were collected twice weekly and analyzed for progesterone to determine length of postpartum anestrus and duration of the initial increase in progesterone. Sequential blood samples were collected on day 35 +/- .1 postpartum (15 min intervals for 18 hrs) from 5 cows in each treatment and analyzed for LH. Concentrations of estradiol were higher (P less than .01) in the 1-E (5.3 +/- .24) than in C (3.9 +/- .23) or 1/4 E (3.9 +/- .25) cows on day 35 postpartum. The interval from parturition to the first estrous cycle of normal duration was similar for cows in the C and 1-E treatment (53 +/- 2.4 and 56 +/- 2.4 days, respectively). Cows in the 1/4-E treatment had a longer (P less than .05) interval (68 +/- 2.5 days). Secretion of LH was similar among treatments on day 35 postpartum. The first normal luteal phase after parturition was preceded by a transient rise in progesterone in 81, 64 and 85% of the cows in the C, 1-E and 1/4-E treatments, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effects of nutrition during the last two trimesters of gestation on GnRH-induced LH release were assessed in crossbred heifers. Heifers (n = 58) were allotted at 90 d gestation to one of three levels of an experimental diet fed at 1, 1.5 or 2% of BW to attain maternal BW loss, BW maintenance or BW gain, respectively, at parturition. Twenty-two heifers were injected (i.m.) once with 100 micrograms GnRH between d 14 and 1 before parturition, and 32 heifers were injected (i.m.) once with 100 micrograms GnRH between d 8 and 21 after parturition. Jugular blood samples were collected before and at 30-min intervals after GnRH for 4 h. Least squares means for BW change differed (P less than .01) among BW loss (-17.6%), BW maintenance (-6.0%) and BW gain (7.0%) heifers. Basal plasma LH concentration was not influenced by nutritional treatment and was similar before and after parturition for all groups. However, in response to GnRH, peak plasma LH concentration was greater (P less than .10) for prepartum than for postpartum heifers. Mean LH peak amplitude in prepartum heifers was approximately twofold greater (P less than .10) in the BW loss and maintenance groups compared with the BW gain group. Prepartum LH release was related inversely (r = -.64) to change in heifer BW and increased (P less than .01) as BW loss increased during gestation. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of time for mating and gestation length on reproductive efficiency in dogs. Groups of eight, six and six beagle bitches were mated with a total of three sires on days 3, 5 and 7, respectively, after the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. All the bitches whelped successfully. The gestation lengths (the intervals from the LH surge to the whelping) were 65.1 +/- 1.9, 65.5 +/- 1.9 and 68.0 +/- 1.8 days, respectively. This length of mating 7 days after the LH surge was significantly longer than that of mating 3 and 5 days after the LH surge (p < 0.05). The litter sizes were 5.5 +/- 2.2, 6.2 +/- 1.9 and 4.8 +/- 2.1, respectively and there was no significant difference between any of the groups. In conclusion, mating 3-7 days after a bitch's LH surge results in a good reproductive efficiency and the intervals from the LH surge to the whelping of mating 7 days after the LH surge shows a longer day significantly in comparison with mating 3 and 5 days after the LH surge.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine relationships between mating behaviour, ovarian follicular state and successful conception in receptive female alpacas. PROCEDURE: Seventy pen matings were observed at a commercial alpaca stud in south-western Victoria. The behaviours observed included time taken to assume sternal recumbency, mating duration, and evidence of nonreceptive behaviour such as spitting, kicking and vocalisation. Ovarian follicular state was determined by ultrasonography, which was complemented by measuring plasma concentrations of oestradiol and progesterone. Pregnancies were confirmed by transabdominal ultrasonography between days 45 and 80 after mating. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between receptive females that conceived and those that failed to conceive in the time taken to adopt the copulation position of sternal recumbency, mating duration, or maximum follicle diameter. There was no significant relationship between time taken to assume sternal recumbency (log10) and maximum follicle diameter or plasma oestradiol (log10). However, there was a significant quadratic relationship between plasma oestradiol concentration (log10) and follicle diameter, and the probability of pregnancy increased as the plasma concentration of oestradiol (log10) at the time of mating increased. Females were sexually receptive most of the time in the absence of a corpus luteum, and regardless of size of the largest follicle or plasma concentration of oestradiol. Breed (Huacaya vs Suri), site of the dominant follicle (left or right ovary), lactation state, number of matings by the male (1 or 2), or interval between parturition and mating, did not affect pregnancy outcome. Follicles with a diameter less than 7 mm were able to ovulate in response to mating. This was smaller than previously reported. Thirty-four pregnancies (49% pregnancy rate) resulted in 30 (88%) births with a gestation length of 343 days (SEM +/- 2, range 316-367 days). There were 4 (12%) abortions between days 45 and 80 of gestation and full term. CONCLUSION: It was not possible to correlate mating behaviour and ovarian state with conception. To optimise pregnancy rates in receptive alpacas, matings need to occur in the presence of an oestrogenic follicle that is capable of ovulation in response to mating. A simple method of detecting alpacas with follicles in this state is not currently available and treatments that control ovarian follicular growth should therefore be investigated.  相似文献

Heifers injected with 10(8) (n = 40), 10(9) (n = 39), or 10(10) (n = 39) colony-forming units of Brucella abortus strain 19 were conjunctivally exposed to 10(7) colony-forming units of strain 2308 during gestation. At parturition, milk from each quarter of the udder, a piece of placenta, and 2 swab specimens of the uterus from the dam plus a swab specimen of the rectum from each calf were cultured for Brucella. If the calf was dead or died, additional specimens of lung, stomach contents, and a mediastinal lymph node also were cultured. Days in gestation was determined for each heifer, using data from rectal palpation after breeding and crown-rump length and weight of calf at parturition, with the median value used for data analysis. In each vaccine dosage group, the proportion (%) of heifers developing brucellosis increased as days in gestation at exposure increased. Strain 2308 was isolated from 3 (11%) of 26, 16 (25%) of 64, and 18 (64%) of 28 heifers that were grouped as less than 121, 121 to 150, and greater than 150 days in gestation at time of exposure, respectively. Thirty-two (86%) of the 37 infected heifers were less than 260 days in gestation at parturition, and calves were premature. Heifers with premature calves were more likely to be infected, and tissues were more likely to yield multiple isolations of strain 2308, regardless of days in gestation at exposure or of days after exposure to parturition. To establish a prediction table of parturition day the real-time B-mode ultrasonographic examinations were performed in the 8 pregnant Malteses and 10 Yorkshire terriers (total pups, 25 and 38 pups, respectively) from 18 days of gestation until the parturition. Ovulation was designated the first day of gestation (day 0). Extra fetal and fetal structures were measured from all conceptues. The parameters that exhibited the best correlation to parturition were used to compile a prediction table of parturition day. To testify the precision of the prediction table of parturition day, the 15 pregnant Malteses (48 pups) and 13 pregnant Yorkshire terriers (42 pups) with unknown mating time were examined using ultrasonography. Inner chorionic cavity diameter on days 18 to 37 and fetal head diameter on day 38 to parturition that showed the best correlation to gestational age were the most pertinent to the estimation of gestational age and the prediction of parturition day. The two parameters were used to compile a prediction table of parturition with averaged regression equations. In verificational examinations, with the exception of I Yorkshire terrier (3.6%) having 1 fetus, 18 of 28 bitches (64.3%) delivered exactly on the date predicted and 9 of 28 bitches (32.1%) delivered within I day of the date predicted. Therefore, the prediction table of parturition day seems to be a useful tool of the prediction of parturition day in practice.  相似文献

Summary

The variation in the length of gestation, the period from mating until parturition, was studied in 77 dogs of different breeds; the time for mating was determined by measuring peripheral blood progesterone levels. The mean length of gestation was 62.1 ± 0.2 (S.E.M.) days, with a variation of 11 days. The number of pups appeared to influence the length of gestation. Length of gestation was negatively correlated (r = ‐0.96, P < 0.001, n = 44) with litter size in litters with 7 or fewer pups. The intra‐breed variation in length of gestation in the five breeds represented by five or more bitches was 3 ‐ 6 days. The mean gestation of Alsatians (60.1 ± 0.5, n = 9) was shorter (P < 0.005) than that of the other breeds combined (62.3 ± 0.3, n = 68). The primiparous/multiparous status of the bitch did not influence the length of gestation.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe the canine electrocardiographic changes in the course of normal and abnormal pregnancy. Twenty-three Brucellosis-negative pregnant bitches were retrospectively classified as normal (n = 12) or abnormal (n = 11). A control group of non-pregnant dioestrous bitches (n = 10) was also included. Normal pregnant females delivered healthy puppies at term while abnormal animals interrupted their pregnancy between days 52-60 (from estimated luteinizing hormone peak) or presented perinatal litter death higher than 60%. All the bitches were electrocardiographically evaluated every 10 days from day 0 to day 65 of the oestrous cycle, to parturition or abortion. Percentage heart rate change increased 31.3% from day 40 to 60 in normal gestation while it decreased -1.8% in dioestrous bitches, although it did not change in the abnormal group (p < 0.01). In the abnormal pregnant group but not in the others, percentage QRSa change fell to -34% on day 60 (p < 0.01). At the same time point, percentage QRSd change was 6.2% vs -4.9% in normal gestations and dioestrous animals, respectively (p < 0.05). Corrected QT interval augmented from day 40 onwards up to 9.9% and 4.3% in the normal pregnant and dioestrous groups, respectively, while it remained unchanged in abnormal gestations (p < 0.05). It is concluded that during normal canine pregnancy, some electrocardiographic parameters begin changing from day 40 onwards, and that pathological gestations differ from normality from day 30. The use of electrocardiography in canine obstetrics might contribute to identify abnormal outcomes before they become clinically evident.  相似文献

Although cats are induced ovulators, the relationship between the day of breeding, the number of matings and the likelihood of ovulation and conception have not been extensively investigated. In this experiment, cats were mated either once or three times on day 1 or day 5 of oestrus to study the incidence of the LH surge, ovulation and conception rates. The percentage ovulating and the conception rates after a single mating on day 1 of oestrus were 60% (6/10) and 33.3% (2/6), respectively, and for cats mated once on day 5 of oestrus were 83.3% (10/12) and 40% (4/10), respectively. When cats were mated three times on day 1 of oestrus, the ovulation rates and conception rates were 70% (7/10) and 85.7% (6/7), respectively, and for those mated three times on day 5 of oestrus were 100% (10/10) and 100% (10/10), respectively. The concentration of LH did not increase in non-ovulating cats, and cats that were mated three times had LH concentrations that were numerically higher than those that were mated once. Litter size was neither related to the day of mating nor to the number of matings. Although an increase in the number of matings on day 1 of oestrus produced a numerically larger LH surge, it did not increase the ovulation rate, suggesting that plasma oestradiol concentrations were not sufficiently elevated to induce a high pituitary response to mating stimulation. The conception rate after a single mating was low, suggesting that the number of sperm per mating was not sufficient. These results suggest that mating more than once in the middle of oestrus is required to improve ovulation rates and conception rates in cats.  相似文献

Recently, canine frozen semen has been attracting attention for breeding purposes, and methods of judging ovulation and optimum timing for insemination have become important. As methods of predicting the canine ovulation, vaginal smear, plasma sex hormone levels and ultrasonographic diagnosis system (US) have been investigated in combination, but a standard technique has not yet been established. Therefore, we investigated a method of predicting canine ovulation in dogs by US, and by measuring plasma LH and progesterone (P) levels three times a day. Ovulation could be observed by detecting irregularly shaped ovarian follicles by US in six of 11 dogs (54.5%). In these dogs, the time between the LH peak and ovulation was 24-48 hr, 38.0 hr on average. The P level on the ovulation day was 1.88-2.81 ng/ml, 2.34 ng/ml on average. A value of 1.88 ng/ml was detected in one dog, but the other five dogs showed P levels of 2 ng/ml or higher. The P level on the day before ovulation was 0.8-1.56 ng/ml, 1.12 ng/ml on average. Assuming that ovulation occurred two days after the LH peak in the 11 experimental dogs, the P level was 2.12-4.06 ng/ml, 2.78 ng/ml on average. The period of a high LH level, not less than 10 ng/ml, continued for 12 hr around the LH peak. Based on these findings, to predict ovulation using US and LH level, it would be necessary for the tests to be performed several times a day. In contrast, it was shown that the day on which a plasma P level of 2 ng/ml or higher was detected by the test performed once a day corresponded to the ovulation day.  相似文献

In the present study, 48 crossbred does (Nubian × Baladi) were used to investigate physiological (mucus and hormonal) traits as affected by gestation pattern (pre‐, full‐ and post‐term parturitions). The incidence of full‐term (does with a gestation length of 146–152 days) was the highest (54.5%), followed by pre‐term (does with a gestation length of 140–145 days; 36.9%) and post‐term (does with a gestation length of 153 days; 8.9%), respectively. Prediction of gestation pattern by using some body measurements was also studied. Cervical mucus samples were collected during estrus to determine spinnbarkeit (i.e. strength, viscosity or stretchability) and pH values of the mucus. Mucus was also collected pre‐parturition daily from day 140 of gestation until delivery, to evaluate the ferning arborization. Blood samples were collected on the day before mating (0 time), 1 (at mating), 30, 60, 90 and 145 days after mating. The results showed that spinnbarkeit and pH in cervical mucus at estrus, serum estradiol‐17α (E2) at day 5 before delivery, and progesterone (P4) levels differed insignificantly according to gestation pattern. The fern degree between day 140 of gestation and day of delivery was the highest in pre‐term does, while it was the lowest in post‐ and full‐term does. The gestation length was the highest in post‐term does (157.5 days), and the lowest in pre‐term does (141.5 days). During winter, the incidence of pre‐term deliveries was the highest (54.5%), but in spring, full‐term deliveries were the most common (58.3%). Most of the traits studied were insignificantly affected by season of birth. Post‐term delivery can be estimated by doe weight and wither height, while full‐term delivery can be anticipated using by hip height and abdomen girth. Pre‐term does can be detected by cervical mucus fern between day 140 of gestation and day of delivery. Post‐term does can be defined by doe weight and wither height, while full‐term deliveries can be defined by hip height and abdomen girth, during pregnancy.  相似文献

The effects of gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) on the reproductive performance of dairy cows with retained placenta were studied. Three hundred and seventy-eight cows diagnosed as having retained placenta received intramuscular injections of either 2 mL sterile water or 200 micrograms of GnRH in 2 mL sterile water between day 8 and day 14 postpartum. Rectal palpation was performed at the time of treatment and ten to 20 days after treatment in order to determine the rate of uterine involution. Thereafter, monthly rectal examinations were carried out until insemination. Pregnancy diagnosis was made by rectal palpation at 40 days or more after breeding. Using the entire experimental population, there were no significant differences between GnRH-treated and control cows for the rate of uterine involution, the occurrence of reproductive problems, the interval from parturition to first observed estrus, the interval from parturition to first insemination, the interval from parturition to conception, the number of services per conception, the total number of services per cow regardless of conception and the incidence of culling for infertility. When the data for herds in which breeding began earlier in the postpartum period (herds having a mean less than or equal to 80 days from parturition to first service for retained placenta cows) were considered, the GnRH treatment resulted in a significantly shorter (p less than or equal to 0.01) calving to conception interval as compared to control cows. In bitches, the length of gestation is highly variable when measured from the day of mating, thus prediction of parturition may be greatly inaccurate when determined from this point. The ability to precisely predict the duration of pregnancy is of practical importance for managing parturition or planning caesarean section and this review analyses the methods that can be used to accurately forecast the day of parturition. At the time of breeding, determination of the luteinizing hormone surge and the initial rise in progesterone provide reliable information on gestational length of the bitch, but when pregnancy is ascertained, ultrasonography is the most useful tool to predict the delivery day. In fact, by ultrasonographic measurements of the extra-foetal and foetal structures an accurate prediction can be made both in early and late pregnancy.  相似文献

Ten gestations in six domestic shorthair cats (Europeans) were monitored daily during the foetal phase of gestation, from the 28th day after the first mating until parturition, using ultrasound with a 12.5‐MHz probe. The development of the various organs over this period was recorded. The diameters of the head (HD) and abdomen (AD) were measured. Skeletal calcification visible on ultrasound occurred in a defined order between the 34th and 40th day of gestation. During the last 30 days of gestation, there was a significant correlation between HD and days before parturition (DBP) (r2 = 0.99) and between AD and DBP (r2 = 0.98). The following equations were obtained: DBP = ?2.10*HD (mm) + 50.74; DBP = ?1.01*AD (mm) + 42.19. The confidence intervals were stable over the last 30 days of gestation. For the HD, the confidence interval was ±1 day in 53% of cases and ±2 days in 85% of cases. For the AD, the confidence interval was ±1 day in 45% of cases and ±2 days in 77% of cases. A table obtained by combining the HD and AD measurements made it possible to estimate the date of parturition within 2 days with a reliability of over 85%.  相似文献

The chronology of uterine enlargement and fetal mineralization relative to luteinizing hormone (LH) peak, time of breeding, and parturition was determined in six female Beagles. Uterine enlargement was first detectable radiographically 35 days prior to parturition. The uterus changes in shape from a circular to a tubular/ovoid structure by 24 days prior to parturition. Mineralized fetuses were first detected at 21 days prior to parturition. The extent of mineralization progressed rapidly with the proximal extremities, forelegs/hindlegs/pelvis, caudal vertebrae/paws, and finally, the teeth becoming visible at approximately 17, 11, five, and four days prior to parturition, respectively. There is a larger variation of gestational dates among dogs when based on time of breeding rather than on the occurrence of the LH peak or parturition. As such, the dates on which to radiographically detect uterine enlargement or fetal mineralization were more accurately determined when based on the occurrence of the LH peak or parturition instead of breeding dates.  相似文献

Reason for performing the study: Although considerable variation in per cycle pregnancy rates exists between Thoroughbred (TB) stallions, there is little information on factors that may influence this figure. Objective: To assess the influence of month, mare numbers and mating frequency on the fertility of TB stallions standing on studfarms in East Anglia, England. Methods: The daily breeding records of 31 TB stallions mating 3034 mares on 4851 occasions during the 2010 season were surveyed and related to first scan pregnancy rates. The influences of mare book size, month, number of matings per day and mating frequency or abstinence on per mating pregnancy rates were analysed. Results: The overall per mating pregnancy rate for all the stallions was 59.6%, but for individual stallions the figures ranged from 19.0% to 80.1%. The first mating occurred on 9 February and the last on 24 July and the per mating pregnancy rate per month was significantly reduced in June and July. The number of mares mated by individual stallions ranged from 15 to 161, giving a mean overall workload of 160 matings per 100 mares. The per mating pregnancy rate was not related to book size, the number of matings in the season or the mating frequency per day. However, some stallions showed differences in per mating pregnancy rate related to month or the number of ejaculations in the preceding 3 days. Conclusions: The majority of TB stallions are able to maintain good fertility despite large books of mares. However, 5 of the 31 stallions surveyed showed a per mating pregnancy rate of ≤50%. Potential relevance: This survey has identified wide differences between the per mating pregnancy rate in TB stallions. Identification of the factors involved through more comprehensive surveys would provide useful information for mare and stallion owners.  相似文献

The Criollo horse industry requires more efforts toward a better understanding of breed characteristics and physiology; few studies have been conducted in Criollo horses to fulfill this demand. Toward this aim, 70 Criollo mares (between 3 and 28 years of age) underwent physiologic evaluation of the length of gestation, occurrence of foal heat, and interval to postpartum ovulation. Gestation length in the 70 mares was 335.6 ± 10.5 days, varying from 312 to 364 days. The mean (±SD) interval from parturition to first ovulation of 42 mares that foaled between September and December of 2005 and 2006 was 19.9 ± 14.0 days. Eighty-three percent of the mares had an interval to foal heat ovulation shorter than 20 days (35/42). The mean (±SD) parturition to ovulation interval of these mares was 14.2 ± 3.0 days.  相似文献
