OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate the dietary vitamin B6 intake and determine the vitamin B6 concentration in blood samples of German vegans. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study with 33 examination sites all over Germany.Subjects Ninety-three vegans (50 females) with a mean (+/- standard deviation (SD)) age of 43.7 +/- 15.7 years who took no vitamin supplements. METHODS: Dietary intake was assed using a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire. Erythrocyte aspartate aminotransferase activity coefficient (EAST-AC) was calculated as the ratio of stimulated (pyridoxal 5'-phosphate added) to unstimulated activity in blood samples that were provided after an overnight fast. RESULTS: Mean +/- SD vitamin B6 intake was 2.83 +/- 0.98 mg day(-1) and mean +/- SD protein intake was 56.6 +/- 21.7 g day(-1). Of the participants 4% showed vitamin B6 intakes lower than daily recommended intakes for Germany, 16% showed EAST-AC > 1.85, and a further 58% showed EAST-AC of 1.5-1-85. Moderate vegans were affected to a lesser extent than strict vegans. None of the established confounders was a significant predictor of EAST-AC. In logistic regression analyses the contribution of nutriments and cereals to pyridoxine intake was the only predictor of EAST-AC classified as < or = 1.85 and > 1.85, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In spite of the high total intake of vitamin B6, an adequate concentration in blood samples could not be realised for a majority of the participants. Due to the health implications of a marginal pyridoxine status, vegans should be encouraged to include foods with a high bioavailability of pyridoxine, such as beans, lentils and bananas, in the daily diet.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system is implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. OBJECTIVE: We report the effects of total energy intake on the IGF system in two populations with markedly different dietary macronutrient intake and cardiovascular event rate. DESIGN, SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Dietary macronutrient intake was measured in a specific Gujarati migrant community in Sandwell, UK (n=205) compared with people still resident in the same villages of origin in India (n=246). Fasting IGF-I, IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-1 and IGFBP-3, insulin and glucose (0 and 2-hour) were measured. RESULTS: Total energy and total fat intake were higher in UK migrants, as were IGFBP-3 and IGF-I (mean (95% confidence interval): 145.9 (138.1-153.6) vs. 100.9 (94.6-107.3) ng ml(-1); F=76.6, P<0.001). IGFBP-1 was lower in UK migrants (29.5 (25.9-33.0) vs. 56.5 (50.6-62.5) microg l(-1); F=48.4, P<0.001). At both sites, IGF-I correlated positively with total energy (Spearman's rho=0.45, P<0.001) and total fat (rho=0.44, P<0.001) as did IGFBP-3 with total energy (rho=0.21, P<0.05) and fat (rho=0.26, P<0.001). Conversely, in Indian Gujaratis, IGFBP-1 fell with increasing total energy (rho=-0.27, P<0.001) and fat intake (rho=-0.26, P<0.01) but not in UK Gujaratis. Multiple linear regression modelling showed that increasing quartiles of fat intake were associated with higher IGF-I (beta=0.42, P=0.007) independent of age, body mass index, plasma insulin, fatty acids and 2-hour glucose. CONCLUSION: In these genetically similar groups, migration to the UK and adoption of a different diet is associated with marked changes in the IGF system, suggesting that environmental factors profoundly modulate serum concentrations and actions of IGFs.  相似文献

A rhizosphere-based method (a low-molecular-weight organic acid solution) was evaluated for the assessment of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) bioavailability to barley (Hordeum vulgare) roots from rhizosphere soils (n = 36) following a 15.71 g dry weight kg?1 application of a metal-spiked sewage sludge under greenhouse conditions. Statistically significant correlation coefficients were found: r = 0.758, P < 0.001 for Cd, r = 0.762, P < 0.001 for Cr, and r = 0.723, P < 0.001 for Pb. The correlations were greater in acidic soils (n = 6; r = 0.983, P < 0.001 for Cd, r = 0.888, P < 0.01 for Cr, and r = 0.898, P < 0.01 for Pb). This extraction failed to assess heavy-metal bioavailability in basic soils (n = 30; r = 0.111, P > 0.05 for Cd, r = 0.002, P > 0.05 for Cr, and r = 0.037, P > 0.05 for Pb). The overall predictability was greatly improved when soil properties were considered (n = 36; r2 = 0.730, P < 0.001 for Cd, r2 = 0.800, P < 0.001 for Cr, and r2 = 0.719, P < 0.001 for Pb), and texture was observed in all the prediction models.  相似文献

The effects of plastic mulching on soil aeration at the soil depth of 0-100 cm were studied in a corn field. The results indicated that the CO2 concentration of unmulched soil in the 0-100 cm layer ranged from 0.001 to 0.016 m3/m3, and that of mulched soil 0.002 to 0.018m3/m3, about 32.39% higher than the former on the average. Such a CO2 concentration in the soil air is still suitable for crop growth. The O2 concentration was inversely correlated with CO2 concentration in the soil air (unmulching r=-0.92**, mulching r=-0.79*). O2 concentration ranged from 0.11 to 0.17 m3/m3 in the mulched soil and 0.13 to 0.18 m3/m3 in the unmulched soil. By contrast, N2 concentration in soil air remained relatively steady, with no difference between the two treatments. The relationship between the soil respiratory intensity and the depth of a soil layer appeared to be a power function. At the layer of 0-20 cm, the soil respiration intensity in the mulched soil was obviously higher than that in the unmulched. Plastic mulching could also affect soil structure. In comparison with the unmulched soil, the content of >0.25 mm aggregate and 0.05-0.001 mm microaggregate in the mulched soil was reduced by 82.1% and 35.8%, respectively; the soil total porosity, gaseous phase rate and aeration porosity in the depth of 10-20 cm were reduced by 2.85%, 19.89% and 26.54% respectively, but contrary at the depth of 0-10 cm.  相似文献

选取珠江三角洲典型区域城郊菜地41个耕层土壤样品,采用化学形态分级-连续提取法研究了土壤中Cd、Pb赋存形态,通过统计分析,揭示了菜地耕层土壤Cd、Pb形态分布特征及其相互关系。Cd赋存形态平均含量顺序为:铁锰氧化物结合态(32.4%)≥碳酸盐结合态(27.2%)≥交换态(21.0%)>残渣态(10.4%)>有机态(9.0%);Pb则为:残渣态(54.1%)>铁锰氧化物结合态(27.5%)>有机态(11.6%)>碳酸盐结合态(4.6%)>交换态(2.1%)。非残渣态Cd占各形态Cd总和的平均比例(89.6%)明显高于Pb(45.9%)。碳酸盐结合态Cd分别与铁锰氧化物结合态Cd、有机结合态Cd呈极显著正相关和显著正相关(前者r=0.8482,P<0.01;后者r=0.4090,P<0.05),但与残渣态Cd呈极显著负相关(r=-0.5343,P<0.01),铁锰氧化物结合态Cd和有机结合态Cd分别与残渣态Cd呈极显著正相关(前者r=0.6965,p<0.01;后者r=0.5379,P<0.01);铁锰氧化物结合态Pb与残渣态Pb呈极显著正相关(r=0.5217,P<0.01),但有机结合态Pb却与残渣态Pb呈显著负相关(r=-0.3252,P<0.05)。在散点图矩阵的基础上建立了曲线估计的回归方程,用之可预测土壤中交换态Cd、Pb的大致数量及植物有效性。  相似文献

This work aimed to study whether soil plant analysis development (SPAD) and its modifications (SPAD/SLA, SPAD/N) were sensitive indicators of intra-seasonal nitrogen (N) changes in the soil-root-petiole-leaf continuum in sugar beets. In a three-year, field experiment, 11 occasions of measurement per year took place. Significant intra-seasonal changes of soil [total N, nitrate (NO3)-N], root (α-amino N), petiole (NO3-N) and leaf [SPAD,%N, SLA, SPAD/N, SPAD/SLA, specific leaf nitrogen (SLN)] traits were found. SPAD readings failed to predict N status changes in soil and sugar beets. SPAD modifications (SPAD/SLA, SPAD/N) gave significant correlations with root α-amino N (r = ?0.80, P < 0.001, n = 33) and petiole NO3-N (r = ?0.53, P < 0.01, n = 33) which are considered as sugar beet N status indicators. SPAD readings adjusted for intra-seasonal, leaf ontogenetic changes as they captured by SLA improved the correlations with the indicators of sugar beet N status and especially with root α-amino N. Also, SPAD/SLA gave a significantly correlation with leaf %N (r = ?0.82, P < 0.001, n = 33).  相似文献

Abstract

Twelve soils with low‐medium phosphorus (P) retention capacities were equilibrated for 3 months with soluble phosphate at a rate of 100 mg P kg‐1 soil. The P sorption properties of these soils both with and without added P were studied, including equilibrium P concentration (EPCo), standard P requirement (SPR), soil P sorption capacity (b), maximum buffer capacity (MBC), and P sorption index (P‐SI). In general, the soils with no added P showed low values of all the above parameters. Oxalate extractable aluminum appeared to be the major responsible element for the control of P sorption in these soils. The addition of P to these soils had a considerable effect on their P sorption properties. The changes in EPCo were well correlated with P sorption index (r=0.80; p≤0.01 ). The EPCo values of the soils with and without added P were closely correlated to bicarbonate extractable P (P0lsen) and calcium chloride extractable P (PCaC12), with r=0.80, and r=0.99 (p≤0.001), respectively. Ninety percent of the variability in EPCo was explained by the corresponding variability in POlsen when a curvilinear relationship was adopted. The P sorption properties examined appear to be useful parameters to assess the environmental impact of soil P on the quality of surface waters.  相似文献

This review summarizes the effect of a habitual vegetarian diet on clinical complications in relation to chemistry and biochemistry. Omnivores have a significantly higher cluster of cardiovascular risk factors compared with vegetarians, including increased body mass index, waist to hip ratio, blood pressure, plasma total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol and LDL-C levels, serum lipoprotein(a) concentration, plasma factor VII activity, ratios of TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C and TAG/HDL-C, and serum ferritin levels. Compared with omnivores, vegetarians, especially vegans, have lower serum vitamin B?? concentration and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels in the tissue membrane phospholipids, which are associated with increased collagen and ADP stimulated ex vivo whole blood platelet aggregation, plasma 11-dehydrothromboxane B?, and homocysteine levels and decreased plasma HDL-C. This may be associated with an increased thrombotic and atherosclerotic risk. It is suggested that vegetarians, especially vegans, should increase their dietary n-3 PUFA and vitamin B?? intakes.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the difference in the nutritional status of elderly people depending on their consumption of fruits and vegetables, and to study the possible association between the consumption of these foods and different cardiovascular risk factors, especially total plasma homocysteine (t-Hcys) levels. DESIGN, SETTING AND SUBJECTS: A cross-sectional study in 152 institutionalised older people from Madrid aged > or = 65 years. Food and nutrient intakes were recorded over 7 days using the 'precise individual weighing' method. The weight, height, and waist and hip circumferences of all subjects were recorded, as were their alpha-erythrocyte glutathione reductase, serum B6, B12 and folate levels, erythrocyte folate levels, t-Hcys levels, serum lipids and blood pressure. The experimental population was then divided into tertiles depending on the serving intake of fruit and vegetables (T1, < 2.29 servings day(-1); T2, 2.29-2.79 servings day(-1); and T3, >2.79 servings day(-1)). RESULTS: Compared with T1 subjects, T3 subjects showed consumptions of cereals, pulses, meat, fish and eggs closer to those recommended (P < 0.05). In addition, the contribution of their diet towards covering the recommended daily intake of vitamin B1, niacin, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin C, B12, vitamin A, and P, Mg, Zn and Fe was higher. The intake of fibre increased with consumption of fruit and vegetables (r = 0.6839, P < 0.001). T3 subjects also had better serum and erythrocyte folate levels than T1 and T2 subjects (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was found between the consumption of fruit and vegetables and serum folate (r = 0.2665, P < 0.01) and with erythrocyte folate levels (r = 0.2034, P < 0.05), and a negative correlation with t-Hcys (r = -0.2493, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Greater consumption of fruit and vegetables is associated with better food habits, increased vitamin and mineral intakes and lower t-Hcys levels. Considering that the fruit and vegetable intake in Spanish elderly people is very low, it is recommended that the consumption of fruits and vegetables by elderly people be increased.  相似文献

以垦粘1号、苏玉糯1号和苏玉糯5号为材料,研究了拔节期追氮量(N 01、50和300 kg/hm2)对春播和秋播糯玉米淀粉胶凝和回生特性的影响,试验于扬州大学实验农牧场进行。结果看出,播期、品种和拔节期追氮量单因素及其互作对淀粉胶凝和回生主要特征值存在显著影响。糯玉米淀粉胶凝和回生特征值在拔节期追氮150 kg/hm2时和秋播条件下较优,即原淀粉具有较低的峰值温度、较高的热焓值,回生淀粉具有较低的回生值,且以垦粘1号表现较好。糯玉米淀粉胶凝和回生特征值之间存在一定的相关性。回生值分别与回生淀粉的热焓值、原淀粉的终值温度显著正相关,相关系数分别为0.82(P0.01)和0.47(P0.05);原淀粉的热焓值与峰值指数显著正相关,相关系数为0.53(P0.05),与原淀粉峰值温度、回生淀粉的终值温度显著负相关,相关系数分别为-0.53(P0.05)和-0.52(P0.05);回生淀粉的热焓值分别与回生淀粉起始温度、终值指数显著正相关,相关系数分别为0.46(P0.05)和0.66(P0.01)。综合考虑淀粉胶凝和回生特性在不同处理下的变化趋势,以秋播糯玉米淀粉在拔节期追N 150 kg/hm2处理下较优。  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between subjective mood, folate status and homocysteine in healthy individuals. DESIGN: Subjective mood assessments were completed twice daily over the course of one week using the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS). The PANAS is a validated scale which considers mood state on two distinct continua, one reflecting positive mood and the other negative mood, each requiring response to 10 adjectives on a Likert scale. A blood sample was taken on one occasion at the start of the week during which subjective mood was assessed and analysed for red-blood-cell (RBC) folate, serum folate and plasma homocysteine concentrations. SUBJECTS: Male volunteers aged 19-47 years (n = 58) were recruited from local industries. RESULTS: High concentrations of RBC folate were associated with less variability (lower standard deviation) in negative mood (P = 0.023). Subjective mood, however, was not related to serum folate or homocysteine. CONCLUSIONS: This study appears to be the first to uncover an association between long-term folate status and subjective mood (employing the PANAS) in healthy males. More research is needed to further explore the relationship between nutritional status and mood.  相似文献

Falling number (FN) values below 300 sec in the apparent absence of preharvest sprouting are periodically observed in the U.S. Pacific Northwest (USPNW). Wheat in the USPNW is predominantly soft‐grained and often grown under conditions conducive to low grain protein concentration (GPC). Our hypothesis is that low GPC per se could be responsible for some low FN results and not elevated α‐amylase from either sprouting or late‐maturity amylase. The relationship between FN and GPC was investigated using grain from the 2011 wheat harvest. Soft white winter wheat samples from six locations in Oregon were tested in duplicate. Across the entire sample set, FN and GPC were positively correlated (r = 0.65, P ≤ 0.001). When putatively sprouted samples (FN < 280 sec) were removed from the analysis, the correlation was still apparent (r = 0.69, P ≤ 0.001). Hardness index was also correlated with FN (r = 0.45, P ≤ 0.001). Our preliminary conclusion is that GPC can be a substantial modulator of FN in the putative absence of elevated amylase in soft white winter wheat grown in the USPNW.  相似文献

epsilon-N-Pyrrolylnorleucine was determined in different fresh food products to study its presence as a normal component of food proteins. Twenty-two different products were screened: cod, cuttlefish, salmon, sardine, trout, beef, chicken, pork, broad bean, broccoli, chickpea, garlic, green pea, lentil, mushroom, soybean, spinach, sunflower, almond, hazelnut, peanut, and walnut. Foods were homogenized, their proteins were precipitated with trichloroacetic acid and hydrolyzed with 2 N NaOH for 20 h, and the epsilon-N-pyrrolylnorleucine content was determined by capillary electrophoresis. The epsilon-N-pyrrolylnorleucine, which was identified by HPLC/MS in sardine muscle hydrolysate, ranged in the 22 foods analyzed from 0.24 to 6.36 micromol/g. This concentration was correlated with the protein content of the food (r = 0.687, p = 0.00041). In addition, the epsilon-N-pyrrolylnorleucine/lysine ratio was found to be a function of the lipid, iron, and protein contents of the food (r = 0.881, p < 0.0001) and was directly correlated with lipid and iron contents and inversely correlated with the protein content. These results are in agreement with the oxidative stress origin proposed for epsilon-N-pyrrolylnorleucine and suggest that the epsilon-N-pyrrolylnorleucine/lysine ratio is a characteristic of each food. In addition, epsilon-N-pyrrolylnorleucine seemed to be a normal component of many fresh food products, in which it may be acting as a natural antioxidant.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine vitamin A (retinol) and fat concentrations in breast milk during early lactation. METHODS: Healthy lactating women (n 88) aged between 18 and 35 years were randomly selected for the study from urban, semi-urban, rural and estate (plantation) sectors of Galle District. Their anthropometry was recorded; breast milk samples were collected from the right breast one hour after the last feed. Breast milk retinol was determined by HPLC and fat content by the crematocrit method. RESULTS: Subjects were in the 2nd to 9th month of lactation. Retinol concentrations of the breast milk samples ranged from 0.10 to 2.46 micromol/l, with a mean of 0.50 micromol/l, and correlated positively with parity (Pearson correlation coefficient, r = 0.307; P = 0.01) and negatively with period of lactation (r = -0.209; P = 0.05). The fat content of breast milk ranged between 5.09 and 56.46 g/l with a mean of 26.95 g/l. A significant difference in either breast milk fat or retinol content and mean birth weight of the babies was not seen between the groups. The ratio of retinol to fat in breast milk was positively correlated with weight (r = 0.274; P = 0.01) and height (r = 0.328; P < 0.001) of the mothers. CONCLUSIONS: In this primary investigation on breast milk quality the fat content was found to be marginal; the majority of lactating mothers (92.0%) were not providing the minimum daily requirement (1.05 micromol/l) of retinol to their babies.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To validate intakes of protein, folic acid, retinol and n-3 fatty acids estimated from a food-frequency questionnaire in week 25 of pregnancy (FFQ-25). DESIGN: Validation was done against a 7-day weighed food diary (FD) and biomarkers of the nutrients in gestation week 32-38. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The FFQ-25 to be validated was used in the Danish National Birth Cohort comprising 101 042 pregnant Danish women, of whom 88 participated in the present validation study. RESULTS: Estimated intakes of protein, retinol and folic acid did not differ significantly between the two dietary methods, but intake of n-3 fatty acids was one third larger when estimated from the FFQ-25. The intakes estimated from the two dietary methods were all significantly correlated, ranging from 0.20 for retinol intake to 0.57 for folic acid intake. Sensitivities of being correctly classified into low and high quintiles were between 0.22 and 0.77, and specificities were between 0.62 and 0.89. Urinary protein content did not correlate significantly with protein estimated from the FFQ (r = 0.17, P > 0.05), but did with intake estimated from the FD (r = 0.56, P < 0.0001). Erythrocyte folate correlated significantly with the estimated total intake from the FFQ (r = 0.55, P < 0.0001) and the FD (r = 0.52, P < 0.0001). No correlations with plasma retinol were found. Erythrocyte eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3) correlated significantly with n-3 fatty acids intake estimated from both the FFQ-25 (r = 0.37, P < 0.001) and the FD (r = 0.62, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: The FFQ-25 gives reasonable valid estimates of protein, retinol and folic acid intakes, but seems to overestimate intake of n-3 fatty acids.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess tracking of energy and nutrient intakes between adolescence and young adulthood. DESIGN: Longitudinal study of a random sample of adolescents (aged 15 years at baseline). The extent of tracking of dietary intakes (assessed by diet history) was investigated using weighted kappa statistics (kappa). SETTING: Northern Ireland population survey. SUBJECTS: Adolescents who participated in the Young Hearts Project, Northern Ireland at age 15 years, and subsequently at young adulthood aged between 20 and 25 years (n=245 males, n=231 females). RESULTS: Despite overall increases in height and weight (both P<0.001), increases in body mass index in males (P<0.001) and body fatness in females (P<0.001), median reported intakes of energy (kJ kg(-1) day(-1)), carbohydrate (g day(-1)) and fat (g day(-1)) decreased (all P<0.001) over time. Expressed as nutrient densities (per MJ), diets at young adulthood were overall richer in thiamin, vitamin B6, total folate (all P<0.001), vitamin C (P<0.01) and vitamin D (P<0.05). Whereas the nutrient density of the males' diets decreased over time for calcium (P<0.05) and vitamin A (P<0.001), iron and riboflavin densities increased in the females' diet (P<0.001). Tracking of energy (MJ day(-1)) and nutrient intakes (expressed per MJ day(-1)) at the individual level was only poor to fair (all kappa<0.25), indicating substantial drift of subjects between the low, medium and high classes of intake with increasing age. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that individual dietary patterns exhibited at 15 years of age are unlikely to be predictive of dietary intakes at young adulthood.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To validate a fat intake questionnaire (FIQ) developed to assess habitual dietary intake while focusing on the assessment of detailed fatty acid intake including total trans unsaturated fatty acids (TUFA). DESIGN: An 88 food item/food group FIQ was developed using a meal pattern technique. Validation was achieved by comparison with dietary intake assessed by a modified diet history (DH) in a cross-over design. Eighty-four individuals supplied adipose tissue biopsies for linoleic acid and total TUFA analysis as an independent validation of the FIQ and DH. SETTING: Medical Centre, Dublin Airport, Republic of Ireland. SUBJECTS: One hundred and five healthy volunteers (43 females and 62 males aged 23-63 years). RESULTS: Significant correlations (P<0.0005) were achieved for intakes of energy (0.78), total fat (0.77), saturated fat (0.77), monounsaturated fat (0.63), polyunsaturated fat (0.73), TUFA (0.67) and linoleic acid (0.71) assessed by the FIQ compared with the DH. Linoleic acid intake assessed by the FIQ and the DH was significantly correlated with adipose tissue concentrations (r=0.58 and 0.49, respectively; P<0.005); however, total TUFA intake was poorly correlated with adipose tissue concentrations (r=0.17 and 0.10 for FIQ and DH, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The FIQ compared favourably with the DH in assessing habitual diet, in particular fatty acid intake. In addition, the FIQ was successfully validated against the linoleic acid composition of adipose tissue, an independent biomarker of relative fatty acid status. The FIQ could therefore be used as an alternative to the DH as it is a shorter, less labour-intensive method.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions, the spores of a xerotolerant Streptomyces odorifera strain germinated in brown semidesert soil even at extremely low soil water pressure (P = ?96.4 MPa, ?964 atm, a w 0.50); the plantlets increased in length and formed mycelium, on which a new generation of spores was produced (a complete development cycle of the actinomycetes??from a spore to the formation of new spores??passed). The duration of the first cycles of the actinomycetes?? development varied from 13 days at P = ?27 atm to 57 days at P = ?964 atm and was directly proportional to the absolute value of the soil water pressure (P). In the first cycles of the actinomycetes?? development, the rate of increase of the concentration of the germinated spores and mycelium, as well as the logarithms of the mycelium-to-germinated spore concentration ratios, was inversely proportional to the logarithm of P. These relationships indicated that the energy state of the water determined its availability to soil biota and, hence, the activity of its physiological and biochemical processes.  相似文献

The effect of an early-, mid-, or late-season planting date on the fatty acid chemistry of four high oleic acid, one mid oleic acid, and five normal oleic acid peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) genotypes was evaluated over a three year period. Oleic acid was also compared to other fatty acids and to indices of oil quality. High-oleic genotypes included SunOleic 97R, UF98326, UF99621, and 88x1B-OLBC1-6-1-3-1-b2-B with a mean oleic acid content between 77.8 and 82.5%. Florida MDR98, a mid-oleic cultivar, was intermediate in oleic acid chemistry (59.8-68.0%). The normal oil chemistry lines (Georgia Greene, Andru93, Florunner, 86x13A-4-2-3-2-b3-B, and UF97102) had an oleic acid content between 50.0 and 59.0%. The ratio of oleic to linoleic (O/L) was 18:1 to 51:1 for high-oleic lines and 1.7:1 to 3.5:1 for normal genotypes. When analyzed as a split-split plot in time, year had a highly significant effect (P < 0.001) on the eight main fatty acids, iodine value, ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids (U/S), and percentage of saturated fatty acids. Thus, data were analyzed separately by year. Although genotypic effects were highly significant each year, planting date influenced oil chemistry in two of three years. During both 1999 and 2000, 11 of 12 variables were influenced by planting date and by genotype x planting date interactions. Iodine values were approximately 75 for high-oleic lines compared to 90-95 for normal genotypes. The highest correlations occurred for oleic acid (18:1) and linoleic acid (18:2) (r = -0.996) and for oleic and palmitic (16:0) acids (r = -0.959). Abstract

Elevated soil phosphorus (P) content is common in the central coastal valleys of California, the result of decades of the intensive vegetable production. Undesirably high P concentration in surface water in this region stimulated interest in evaluating techniques to rank the potential for soil P loss to the environment. Phosphorus availability of 25 representative soils from fields in vegetable rotations were evaluated by the following techniques: bicarbonate‐extractable P (Pbc)–calcium chloride, extractable P (Pcc), P extractable by iron‐impregnated paper (PFe), P extractable by anion exchange resin (Pae), and the degree of P saturation (Psat). A column study was conducted in which these soils were evaluated for soluble P concentration in runoff and leachate from two simulated irrigation events. There were strong correlations among all measures of soil P availability (r=0.66–0.90). Runoff soluble P was most strongly correlated with Pcc, Pae, and Pbc (r=0.98, 0.93, and 0.91, or 0.98, 0.90, and 0.85 in the first and second irrigation, respectively). The relationship of runoff soluble P to Pbc, Pae, and Pcc was characterized by a change point; runoff soluble P from soils <50 mg kg?1 Pbc was minimal, whereas at higher Pbc runoff P reached levels of environmental concern. Leachate soluble P was also correlated with Pcc, Pae, and Pbc (r=0.84–0.99). Across soils, leachate soluble P averaged 1.4 mg L?1, compared to 0.11 mg L?1 for runoff P. We conclude that Pcc, Pae, and Pbc are useful tests to rank the potential for P loss in irrigation runoff or drainage. Given the relative complexity of the Pae technique, Pbc and Pcc appear to be the most practical soil tests for this purpose.  相似文献
