Breeding records from 1997 to 2000 for West African Dwarf goats kept under an intensive management system on the National Breeding Station at Kintampo in Ghana were analysed for the effect on mortality of sex, season and type of birth, and birth weight. The pre-weaning and post-weaning mortalities were 10% (n = 390) and 23.1% (n = 351), respectively, while the overall mortality from birth up to 12 months of age was 30.8% (n = 390). The post-weaning period recorded significantly higher proportions of deaths in males, females, single-born and twins, during the rainy and dry seasons, and for kids with low or high birth weight, compared to the pre-weaning period. There was significantly higher mortality in male kids than in female kids. The odds and risks of death for male kids were about twice those for females at post-weaning and up to 1 year of age. At pre-weaning and up to 1 year of age, a higher proportion of the dead were twins. Twins had approximately 2.5 the risk of death at pre-weaning, compared to singles. Also, kids born in the rainy season had significantly higher mortality than those born in the dry season. Kids that died by the time of weaning were significantly lighter in weight at birth than those that survived. Male kids had significantly higher mean weights at birth and at weaning, but not at 12 months of age. The significance of these findings is discussed.  相似文献

A retrospective cohort study was designed to examine the effect of sex, season of birth, type and year of birth, and birth weight on lamb mortality. The method used involved analysis of breeding records for Sahelian sheep kept on a breeding station at Pong-Tamale in northern Ghana from 1994 to 2000. The pre-weaning and post-weaning mortalities were 10% (n = 505) and 19% (n = 453), respectively, while the overall mortality from birth up to 12 months of age was 28% (n = 505). Compared to the pre-weaning period, the post-weaning period recorded significantly higher proportions of deaths in male, single-born, lambs born in the rainy or dry seasons, and in lambs with low (<3 kg) or high (> or =3 kg) birth weight. The odds and risks of death for male lambs were about one and a half times those for females at post-weaning. Lambs born in the dry season had significantly higher mortality than those born in the rainy season. Lambs that died by the time of weaning were not significantly different in weight at birth from those that survived. The mean birth and weaning weights of single-born lambs were significantly higher than those for twins. The mean pre-weaning ADG was significantly higher in lambs born as singles compared to that for twins. The season of birth had influence on mean birth weight, with those born in the rainy season having significantly higher weights than those born in the dry season. The year of birth significantly affected birth weight, weaning weight, weight at 12 months and ADG at all stages of the lambs' life. The study concluded that the most significant risk factors for lamb mortality included sex of the lamb, season of birth and birth weight. The last two could be manipulated, to some extent, to reduce lamb mortality.  相似文献

Carcass composition and meat quality attributes of 55 suckling kids (27 males and 28 females) and 57 suckling lambs (28 males and 29 females) of Portuguese native breeds were investigated. These suckling kid and lamb meats are European meat quality labels produced according to "Cabrito de Barroso- PGI" and "Borrego Terrincho-PDO" specifications, respectively. Female kids were slaughtered at 9.1 +/- 0.36 kg of BW, and male kids were slaughtered at 10.4 +/- 0.37 kg of BW, corresponding to 20.1 and 17.7% of maturity, respectively. Female lambs were slaughtered at 8.6 +/- 0.53 kg of BW, and male lambs were slaughtered at 9.9 +/- 0.23 kg of BW, corresponding to 19.9 and 17.1% of maturity, respectively. At 24 h postmortem, various yield and quality measurements were collected. The left sides of the carcasses were dissected into muscle, subcutaneous fat, intermuscular fat, and bone. Final pH, instrumental color (L*, a*, b*), carcass measurements, and kidney knob and pelvic fat were also determined. Samples of LM were taken from the lumbar and thoracic cuts for intramuscular and meat quality determinations. At 72 h postmortem, a sample of LM was used for cooking losses and Warner-Bratzler shear force determination. Suckling lambs had greater dressing proportion than suckling kids (P < 0.01). Carcass fatness was not affected by species (P > 0.05), but females had greater kidney knob and pelvic fat proportion than males (P < 0.01). Lambs had greater proportions of the highly valued leg cut and lower proportions of shoulder, anterior rib, and neck cuts than kids. Dissection results indicated that kid carcasses had greater muscle content and lower dissected fat and bone than lambs. Kids had greater (P < 0.001) muscle ultimate pH value than lambs (5.8 +/- 0.02 vs. 5.6 +/- 0.02). Males had greater (P < 0.05) muscle ultimate pH value than females (5.7 +/- 0.02 vs. 5.6 +/- 0.02). The kid meat was significantly lighter (P < 0.05) and less yellow (P < 0.001) than the lamb meat. Kids presented less cooking losses (P < 0.001) than lambs, and shear force value was significantly greater (P < 0.01) in lamb meat. The kid meat had significantly more moisture (P < 0.001) and less intramuscular fat content (P < 0.001) than lambs. At this maturity stage, there were significant differences on both carcass and meat quality attributes of suckling kids and lambs, possibly due to inherent differences between species.  相似文献

The efficiency of tranfer of maternal immunity and its infuence on the kids' health was observed in a herd in which kids (n=20) had whole contact with the dam (n=13). The factors associated with dam, kid and human, which influence the efficiency of passive transfer were observed. It was estimated that the single-born kids reached higher serum gamma-globulin level (mean 23.14 g/dm3) than twin kids (mean 18.2 g/dm3) (p < 0.05). The gamma-globulin level was the highest in single-born kids at 48 h, and in twin kids in 24 h of life. The IgG class antibodies to herd-homologous strains of Pasteurella multocida and Escherichia coli were estimated using ELISA in sera, colostrum and milk whey samples of dams and sera of kids. It was found that maternal antibodies specific to these two facultative pathogens decreased in kids sera rapidly and the self humoral immune response occurred within the period of observation. Two kids delivered by goats with lowest hierarchic position in the herd showed failure of passive transfer, and died at the 10th and 12th weeks of life due to chronic infections induced by both above mentioned bacterial strains.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the development of the pupillary light reflex and menace response in neonatal lambs and goat kids. Thirty lambs and 33 kids were assessed daily from birth until the pupillary light reflex and menace response had become established. All animals had a controlled pupillary light reflex within 20 h of birth. Lambs and kids had developed menace responses by 8 ± 3 and 14 ± 2 days, respectively. The Mann–Whitney test revealed a significant difference (P < 0.001) in the ages at which lambs and kids developed a menace response. Male kids developed this response significantly (P = 0.006) later than females. There was no sex difference in the menace response in the lambs. Overall, the findings indicated that lambs develop a menace response earlier than kids, and female kids develop this response more rapidly than their male counterparts.  相似文献

A study was conducted on the incidence of perinatal lamb mortality with extension up to 30 days of age (PMR 30) in West African Dwarf sheep in Ibadan, Nigeria, over a three year period. An overall PMR 30 of 19.9% was recorded. This consisted of an abortion rate of 3.0%, a still-birth rate of 2.7% and a neonatal lamb mortality rate of 15.6% up to 30 days of age (LMR). Abortion rate was significantly higher in pregnancies with multiple foetuses and during the dry sea son (P less than 0.01 and P less than 0.05 respectively). Conversely, the still-birth rate was slightly higher in single lambs (P less than 0.05). The LMR for males (17.1%) and that for females (13.4%) were not significantly (P greater than 0.05) different. Also the LMR for single-born (14.4%), twin-born (15.4%) and triplets (26.7%) did not significantly differ (P greater than 0.05). The optimum birth weight for survival of the breed appeared to be 2.6 to 3 kg. Regression analysis showed a 28.3% increase in birth weight and all live-born lambs with birth weights of 0.9 kg or less died during the neonatal period. About two-thirds (67.2%) of all neonatal deaths occurred during the first week of life. There was no significant effect of season on LMR. The perinatal mortality rates recorded among West African Dwarf sheep in this study do not seem to significantly differ from corresponding figures recorded in other parts of the world.  相似文献

The pathogenicity of caprine herpesvirus type-1 (CHV-1) in goat kids and lambs was studied. Two experiments were carried out. In the first, two Saanen goat kids and four lambs of a local breed were infected intravenously with the Swiss strain E/CH of the virus. Clinical reaction was severe in the kids, but it was very mild in the lambs. Virus was excreted from the kids in higher titres and longer than in lambs. Virus was also isolated from tissue specimens but only from a kid that died on post inoculation day 4 (PID 4). The gross- and histopathological lesions were more severe in kids. In the second experiment only lambs were used. They were dexamethasone treated and then virus inoculated. A very mild infection developed. The lambs did not shed the virus, neither the virus was isolated from their tissues collected at necropsy. Nevertheless histopathological lesions were seen. Enterotoxemia was induced in 4 lambs and 4 goat kids by continuous intraduodenal infusion of a whole culture of Clostridium perfringens type D. Clinical signs, hematologic values, biochemical alterations, and postmortem lesions in the lambs and goat kids were compared. The 4 lambs and 4 goat kids died within 25 hours of beginning the infusions. Lesions were not observed in the gastrointestinal tract of the 4 lambs; however, severe hemorrhagic enterocolitis was found in the 4 goat kids. This difference between the lambs and goat kids in the lesions caused by experimentally induced enterotoxemia may explain the discrepancies reported between sheep and goats in clinical signs, response to treatment, and efficacy of vaccination observed in naturally induced enterotoxemia in the 2 species.  相似文献

试验对7月龄陶赛特×小尾寒羊F1代(简称陶×寒F1)公母羔羊肌肉化学成分进行了比较研究。试验选择了在集约化饲养方式下饲养的7月龄陶赛特×小尾寒羊F1代公羔、母羔各5只进行屠宰,分别取背最长肌后测定常规营养成分、氨基酸、长链脂肪酸、胆固醇、矿物元素等养分的含量。结果表明,陶×寒F1公羔、母羔之间在背最长肌中干物质、粗蛋白质、粗脂肪、粗灰分、钙、磷等含量上均无显著差异(P>0.05)。各种氨基酸含量、总必需氨基酸含量、总非必需氨基酸含量、总氨基酸含量差异均不显著(P<0.05)。公羔与母羔背最长肌中大部分脂肪酸的含量、总不饱和脂肪酸含量均无显著差异(P>0.05),但公羔背最长肌中亚油酸的含量提高20.3%(P<0.05),胆固醇含量降低约32%(P<0.05)。羔羊不同性别之间背最长肌中的镁、锌、铜、锰含量没有显著差异(P>0.05),但母羔背最长肌中的铁含量比公羔的高约26%(P<0.05)。因此,7月龄陶×寒F1公羔、母羔肌肉的营养价值基本相同。  相似文献

An investigation was made in 252 Barbari and Jamunapari kids to assess their resistance to natural infection with gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes and to establish indicator traits for such resistance in Indian goats. The indicator traits, faecal egg counts (FEC) and packed cell volume (PCV) were affected by various genetic and non-genetic factors. There were no breed differences in the FEC or PCV at 3, 6 or 9 months of age. Jamunapari male kids had a higher FEC than the female kids at 6 months of age. However, Barbari female kids had a higher FEC than the respective male kids at 9 months of age. At 6 months of age in both breeds, the kids born in the spring (March–April) had a higher FEC than those born in the autumn (October–November). The FEC of kids at 9 months of age was higher than at 3 or 6 months of age. Sire had a significant effect on PCV at 6 and 9 months of age. The kids born in the autumn had a higher PCV than those born in the spring. The PCV of male Barbari kids differed significantly from that of female kids at all the ages. The correlation coefficient of FEC on both body weight and body weight gain was negative, and there was a loss of body weight in the individuals with a high FEC.  相似文献

The incidence of dystocia was recorded in flocks of Dorset Horn ewes lambing in winter, spring or summer and grazed at 8, 12 or 16 ewes per hectare over a ten-year period. The mean incidence of dystocia was 34% of ewes lambing. Significantly more ewes experience a difficult birth at winter (35%) and spring (39%) than summer (26%) lambings. Neither stocking rates nor pre-lambing ewe bodyweight were related to the incidence of dystocia. The incidence of dystocia was significantly greater in 2-year-old ewes than in any other age group. Foetal size was of major importance in the occurrence of dystocia. Approximately 60% of single and twin born lambs that had birth weights greater than 4.5 kg had a difficult birth whereas in lambs weighing less than 3.2 kg only about 10% were affected. Thirty-six per cent of all perinatal mortality was attributable to dystocia. Approximately 27% of single and 73% of twin presentations in assisted births were abnormal, 31% of all lambs assisted had 1 or both legs retained, 4% had posterior (including breech) presentations and the remaining 8% were of varied forms of malpresentation. Significantly more single male than female lambs experienced a difficult birth and the mean birth weights of single, twin and triplet born lambs that had a difficult birth were greater than the birth weights of singles, twins and triplets born normally.  相似文献

To determine whether kids born on open range (subjected to stress due to management practices) had lower IgG concentrations and a higher mortality risk than kids born in a pen, serum IgG concentrations in 63 one-day-old kids were determined. Median Serum IgG concentrations one day after birth tended to be lower (p=0.09) in surviving kids born in the open than that of surviving kids delivered in pen (115 vs. 1119 mg dl−1). However, survival risk (71 and 82% for kids born on the open range and pen, respectively; n=79) were not significantly affected by site of kidding. Median IgG concentration of surviving kids born on a pen was not significantly different (p=0.13) compared to non-surviving kids (1118 vs. 115 mg dl−1). No differences were detected in either median serum IgG levels or death rates between male and female kids. Kids with IgG concentrations <800 mg dl−1 showed lower survival risks than those with higher concentrations. We concluded that typical management practices of kids delivered on open range at a goat operation under extensive conditions in northern Mexico tended to reduced colostrally acquired serum immunoglobulin levels, but had no effect directly on mortality.  相似文献

[目的]探讨放养云岭山羊羔羊在哺乳期的生长发育规律。[方法]选取待产母羊24只,共产羔36只(公羔17只,母羔19只),测定0~8周龄羔羊的体重(每周测定1次)和体尺(隔1周测定)。采用Logistic、Gompertz和Von Bertalanffy 3种非线性模型对0~8周龄公羔、母羔的体重进行生长曲线拟合,并对初生体重以及试验末体重进行相关性分析。[结果]采用的3种非线性模型均能够很好地拟合哺乳期云岭山羊羔羊生长曲线,拟合度均大于0.99。Gompertz和Von Bertalanffy模型拟合效果较优,公羔的生长发育曲线拐点时间分别为3.212周和2.862周,拐点体重分别为5.691、5.352 kg;母羔拐点时间分别为1.927周和1.325周,拐点体重分别为4.532、3.960 kg;公、母羔之间拐点周龄和拐点体重存在差异,公羔平均在3.037周龄体重增长速度达到最大,而母羔平均在1.626周龄体重增长速度达到最大。初生重对羔羊试验末体重有极显著(P<0.01)影响。[结论]该研究结果可为今后对哺乳期放养云岭山羊羔羊进行合理补饲提供依据。  相似文献

A 2 year investigation into diseases of early-born, housed lambs was carried out from 1989 to 1991. The mortality, morbidity and sub-clinical disease of housed lambs from three flocks were studied. This paper describes the collection and analysis of morbidity data.

Morbidity was assessed using two techniques. In the first year, a cohort of approximately 80 lambs per flock was observed at regular (7 or 14 day) intervals from birth to slaughter at 10–26 weeks of age. Each lamb was examined using a routine clinical examination carried out by two out of three members of a trained team of veterinarians.

The technique used was thought to be objective and accurate. However, because there was a small proportion (10–12%) of lambs examined there was a lack of information on severely sick lambs and only diseases of prevalence greater than 3.5% had a 95% probability of being identified. This led to a change im the method of data collection in the second year when the whole flock of lambs was observed by farmers and lambs which they considered sick were presented for treatment.

Seventeen clinical entities were detected in the first year; these were primarily mild conditions. In lambs from Cohorts A, B and C, the mortality rates were 11.8%, 10.5% and 1.3%, respectively. In the second year, 16 diseases were observed. Lambs presented by the farmers were overtly sick; 15.3% from Flock A and 29.2% from Flock B died. There were no sick lambs presented by Farmer C. In the second year, sick lambs were observed but the objectivity of the study was considered to have decreased from the first year. Evidence of this came from the inter-observer bias between farmers. There was a significant difference in the proportion of sick lambs presented by Farmers A and B but there was no significant difference in the proportion of lambs which subsequently died (1.6% and 1.8 %) of lambs born in Cohorts A and B, respectively) and which had been presented for treatment, suggesting that Farmer A selected less severely sick lambs than Farmer B.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine some blood and other physiological parameters with potential for use as prognostic indicators of viability of newborn goat kids. Of the 143 kids born during the on-farm study, 97 were crosses of Galla x Small East African (SEA) and 46 were pure SEA. The SEA x Galla kids were 46 single males, with a mean body weight at birth of 2.77 +/- 0.22 kg, 43 females with a mean body weight at birth of 2.36 +/- 0.76 kg and 5 and 3 sets of female and male twins (mean body weight at birth of 1.8 +/- 0.19 kg and 2.05 +/- 0.07 kg for the female and male kids, respectively). The SEA kids comprised 36 single male and female kids (mean body weight at birth of 2.48 +/- 0.04 kg and 10 sets of twins (both male and female) (mean body weight at birth of 1.50 +/- 0.04 kg ). Pre-suckling sera obtained on-station from kids born of does vaccinated against Escherichia coli (n = 8) and unvaccinated does (n = 7) had a total protein content of <40.0 g/l and no detectable levels of IgG and A or E. coli antibodies. Sera obtained 12 hours post partum) from kids that survived in both groups contained about 19-22 g of Ig g/l, 50-80 g total protein/l, blood glucose of >5 mmol/l and had an E. coli antibody titre of between 1/160 and 1/640. On the other hand, kids that died within 48 hours of birth (parturient deaths) and had been classified in categories 3 and 4 righting reaction had low (<40 g/l) total protein, low white blood cell count (4,000/ml) and low blood glucose concentration (<4.9 mmol/l). It is concluded that kids with delayed righting reaction (>45 minutes), low rectal temperature (<36 degrees C), low birth weights (<1.5 kg for singles and <1.0 kg for twins), low white blood cells (<4,000/ml), low (<2 mmol/l) blood glucose levels, low total protein (<40.0 g/l), low (<1:160) E. coli antibody titre and IgG (< or =3,350 mg/l) in sera obtained 12 hours after birth have a poor prognosis for survival.  相似文献

A study of ewe performance was undertaken in 795 sheep flocks based on data from the Norwegian Sheep Recording System. Herd level data included in the annual report for 1998 were used as the basis for the study. Average flock size was 75.3 ewes. The material was considered as representative of the better and more motivated sheep farmers in the mountain valley regions in south-eastern Norway. The average number of lambs born per ewe, inclusive (and exclusive) of barren ewes, was 1.89 (2.02), and of autumn lambs (those surviving from birth in the spring to autumn) 1.60 (1.66). The average autumn weight of the lambs corrected to 145 days of age was 42.4 kg, giving an overall performance of 67.9 kg lambs live weight per ewe. When including artificially reared lambs, overall performance was 70.4 kg per ewe. Artificial rearing of lambs, mostly triplets which had been removed from the ewe, was practised on 395 of the farms. In the 74 flocks with a rate of artificial rearing of more than 10% of all lambs, overall performance per ewe was 13.3 kg higher than in flocks with no artificial rearing. Total lamb mortality from birth to autumn recording, including stillborn lambs, was 12.44%. Mortality had a skewed distribution, some flocks having very high mortality figures. The arithmetic means (and medians) for mortality were as follows: 2.75 (2.29)% stillbirths, 2.93 (2.30)% died during the indoor feeding period, 0.88 (0.00)% at spring pasture, and 6.16 (4.40)% at summer pasture. In regression models using Proc Genmod in SAS®, it was found that average number of autumn lambs per ewe was negatively associated with the rate of barren ewes, late lambing date (flock average day in year when lambing took place), and total lamb mortality. The corrected autumn weight of the lambs was positively associated with the average number of lambs born per ewe and non-fertility rate, and negatively associated with flock size and total lamb mortality. The Dala breed had a positive effect on number of autumn lambs per ewe, and Spæl breed a negative effect on corrected autumn live weight of the lambs.  相似文献

The efficacy of 2 injectable formulations of ivermectin, administered intraorally at the dosage of 200 micrograms/kg of body weight, was evaluated against naturally occurring infections by abomasal nematodes in lambs in 2 controlled tests. One test (A) included 17 lambs treated with the equine formulation and 16 nontreated lambs. For the other test (B), 14 lambs were treated with the bovine formulation, and 12 were nontreated. In controlled test A, only mature nematodes were recovered, and removals were 98% to 100% for Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia circumcincta male, O trifurcata male, Ostertagia spp female, and Trichostrongylus axei. For controlled test B, removals were 99% to 100% for Haemonchus spp (immature), H contortus (mature), Ostertagia spp (immature), O circumcincta male (mature), O trifurcata male (mature), Ostertagia spp female (mature), Trichostrongylus spp (immature), and T axei (mature). Growth performance, carcass characteristics, post-slaughtering and haematological parameters of Kivircik and Karacabey Merino male lambs in conventional and organic management systems were compared. The animals which were weaned at 7 weeks of age were divided into Kivircik conventional, Kivircik organic (KO), Karacabey Merino conventional and Karacabey Merino organic (MO) groups containing 12 lambs each. Fattening was ended when lambs attained 35 kg of live weight. The prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia was studied on 10 intensively reared sheep and goat farms in the province of East Flanders, Belgium. Random faecal samples were collected and examined using the Merifluor((R)) immunofluorescence assay. Cryptosporidium positive samples were withheld for molecular identification using primers targeting the 18S rDNA, 70 kDa heat shock protein and 60 kDa glycoprotein gene. For the molecular identification of Giardia the beta-giardin gene and a recently developed assemblage specific PCR based on the triose phosphate isomerase gene were used. The prevalence of Cryptosporidium in lambs was 13.1% (18/137), on 4 out of 10 farms. In goat kids the Cryptosporidium prevalence was 9.5% (14/148), on 6 out of 10 farms. The molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium positive isolates indicated that in lambs (n=10) the cervine genotype was predominant, whereas in the goat kids (n=11) only C. parvum was identified, with subgenotypes IIaA15G2R1 and IIdA22G1. The Giardia prevalence was 25.5% (35/137) in lambs with all 10 farms being positive, and 35.8% (53/148) in goat kids with 8 out of the 10 farms being positive. Both in the goat kids and in the lambs the host specific assemblage E was most commonly identified. However, the zoonotic assemblage A was identified in 6 out of 28 goat kids and in 2 out of 8 lambs, based on the beta-giardin sequence alignment. Using the assemblage specific PCR, mixed assemblage A and E infections were additionally identified in 2 lambs and in 5 goat kids. The results of the present study indicate that both Cryptosporidium and Giardia are common parasites on intensively reared sheep and goat farms in the province of East Flanders, Belgium, and that they are a potential source for zoonotic infections.  相似文献
