Isolation of feline herpesvirus 1 from a young kitten

Five kittens exposed neonatally to older cats exhibiting fever with nasal and ocular discharge became ill and died within 10 days of the onset of illness. One kitten which died at 16 days old was examined post mortem and feline herpesvirus 1 was isolated from the brain, liver, lung and spleen.     

Megabacteriosis in a flock of budgerigars

Megabacteriosis was diagnosed as the cause of depression and wasting in a flock of breeding budgerigars in the Manawatu. Large numbers of megabacteria were detected in direct smears from mucosal scrapings of the proventriculus of two birds and in the faeces of live birds. The diagnosis was confirmed by demonstrating a chronic proventriculitis histologically associated with megabacterial organisms. Treatment of seven individuals with amphotericin B resulted in clinically sustained weight gain over a 10-week period. Treatment of the whole flock resulted in the resumption of normal condition, behaviour and activity.

Isolation of Listeria monocytogenes from organs of young lambs

Samples of organs from 50 lambs, 3-45 days old, brought to this laboratory from 44 different flocks for post mortem examination, were examined for Listeria monocytogenes. Various diseases were found as cause of the death. The bacterium was isolated from 3 lambs (6%) which had died from E. coli-septicaemia. Two of these lambs were 3 days old whereas the third was 23 days.     

Skeletal abnormalities in young horses associated with zinc toxicity and hypocuprosis

SUMMARY Four young horses grazing pastures near industrial plants developed illthrift, lameness and skeletal abnormalities characterised by periarticular enlargement of the long bones. The clinical signs and lesions were attributed to hypocuprosis induced by an excessive intake of zinc from pasture. High pasture intakes of iron may have further compounded the problem.     

Trichomoniasis, a major cause of vomiting in budgerigars

Vomiting and retching are common signs of ill health in budgerigars and the usual cause is trichomoniasis of the oesophagus and, or, crop. Clinical, pathological and treatment features are described.     

Isolation of a Lelystad virus-like agent from British pigs and scanning electron microscopy of infected macrophages.

Six, one-week-old gnotobiotic piglets were inoculated with tissues or sera collected from field cases of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome. The piglets showed little or no illness, and two that were necropsied at 8 and 9 days post infection appeared grossly normal. However, a Lelystad virus-like agent was isolated from most of the inoculated pigs using porcine alveolar macrophage cultures. Seroconversion to the Lelystad virus was observed and some animals developed microscopically detectable interstitial pneumonias. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the in vitro cytopathic effect of the Lelystad virus on porcine alveolar macrophages.
