Abstract. Hatchery-reared brown trout, Salmo trutta L., yearlings were captured shortly (3h to one week) after their release in a Norwegian stream. The feeding of recaptured hatchery fish was compared with that of wild brown trout. The investigations were carried out during three different periods (May, July and October). Investigations of drift fauna indicated that food availability was best in May. Most hatchery-reared brown trout started feeding shortly after their release in all three periods. Hatchery fish went through a learning process with respect to feeding. This was most clearly demonstrated by the amounts of plant fragments in their stomachs, which were always greater in hatchery fish than in wild fish but which decreased with time after release in hatchery fish stomachs in all three periods. By about a week after release, hatchery trout appeared to be feeding on wild prey nearly as well as did wild fish, but they achieved this better in May than in October.  相似文献

Abstract. Effects of four types of habitat improvement structures have been evaluated in Låktabäcken Creek, a steep and infertile brown trout, Salmo trutta L., stream in Northern Sweden. Boulder dams proved to be the most efficient structure, increasing brown trout densities by up to three times and standing crop by up to five times their original values. Log deflectors gave similar effects on standing crop while boulder groupings and boulder deflectors seemed to be inefficient. Older/larger fish were primarily favoured. No increase in growth or enhanced condition has been registered. Obviously, profitable stream positions for older fish were lacking in Läktabäcken Creek. An increase in the amount of cover and an increase in the winter survival might be secondary effects of alterations.  相似文献

Abstract The local migratory behaviour of lake trout, Salmo trutta L., and resident brown trout, S. trutta L., progeny from an inflowing stream of Lake Constance was compared. No differences were detected with respect to emigration rate (3.5% and 4.2% for lake trout and resident trout, respectively), rate of residency (6.8% and 8.2% for lake trout and resident trout, respectively) and rate of survival (12.3% and 12.1% for lake trout and resident trout, respectively) one year after stocking. Some of the resident brown trout offspring became migrants and vice versa . The results indicate that the progeny of riverine brown trout contribute considerable numbers to lake trout stock.  相似文献

Abstract – The present authors studied the movements of resident stream brown trout, Salmo trutta L., in Valley Creek, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA, using mark-recapture techniques as well as radio telemetry. The novel characteristic of this study is that the entire stream was sampled during recapture, thus minimizing the possibility of bias during this portion of the analysis. The authors tagged 627 trout between June and September, 1995, and made 94.6% of recaptures in December, 1995, and 98.5% of recaptures in March, 1996, within 800 m of the initial tagging sites. They also implanted six trout with radio transmitters and made 94.6% of contacts within 800 m of the initial implantation sites. The data, which were pooled from mark-recapture and radio telemetry studies, show that 95.5% of all recaptures and contacts were within 800 m of initial tagging sites. These results, derived from complete stream sampling, support previous studies indicating that a high percentage of resident stream salmonids remain in the same area of stream throughout the year.  相似文献

Abstract. Brown trout. Salmo trutta L., estimates were obtained for the Owendoher, a tributary of the River Dodder. Data were collected at live stations on 21 occasions from May 1981 to May 1983. Total population densities ranged from 0·07 to 1·29 fish/m2 Mean annual densities varied from 0·20 to 0·77 fish/m2. Trout in this stream are typically slow-growing fish reaching a maximum length of 7·68, 13·05 and 17·54cm at the end of their first, second and third years respectively. Growth improved in a downstream direction with the highest rates recorded in stretches overlying limestone. There was some evidence of density-dependent growth in the upper reaches Daily instantaneous growth rates were highest for all age groups during the months May to August but became depressed during the winter. There was considerable variation in the total monthly biomass figures with values ranging from 1·32 to 33·46 g/m2. Mean annual values ranged from 3·96 to 13·48 g/m2. Annual production (somatic) varied from 3·77 to 14·38 g/m2. in 1981–1982 and from 6·12 to 12·70 g/m2. in 1982–1983. The mean annual production figure for this stream was 11·24 g/m2. Production was contributed mainly by 1+ and 2+ trout at all stations. Egg production. accounting for 3–4% of the total estimate, was contributed mainly by resident 1+ and 2+ fish. It ranged from 0·33 to 0·45 g/m2 in 1981–1982 and from 0·14 to 0·53 g/m2 in the following year. Ratios of annual production to mean biomass (P/B?) were highest for 0+ trout hut decreased with increasing age. The mean P/B? ratios for all age classes varied from 0·95 to 1·17. The mean value for the Owendoher stream was 1·1. The effects on production of changes in age structure, population density and habitat alterations are discussed.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., fry were point and scatter stocked in the early part of June at densities of 63–263 fry 100 m−2 per species in the River Viantienjoki, a small river in northern Finland, and their population densities were assessed in late summer. Both species were always stocked together in similar quantities. Point stocking was used in the first 2 years and scatter stocking in the following 2 years. In point stocking, there was no correlation between the distance from the stocking sites (maximum = 250 m) and parr density in census sites ( r = −0.013 and 0.019 for brown trout and Atlantic salmon, respectively). The stocking density of fry did not influence parr density in August by either method or by species. Stocking density explained only from 11% to 23% of the parr survival depending on the species or stocking method. The mean densities of Atlantic salmon and brown trout parr did not differ significantly from each other at any fishing site ( P > 0.05). Both point and scatter stocking appear to be suitable methods for use in small rivers. The parr densities depend more on the other factors (e.g. habitat quality) than the stocking method, and the choice between methods could be based on the time and labour available.  相似文献

The effect of habitat on the growth and diet of brown trout, Salmo trutta L., stocked at the same densities in nine stream enclosures, comprising three habitat types of different quality, were tested. The habitats, which were created based on microhabitat preference data, were a shallow water habitat lacking cobbles (habitat 1), a deeper, mixed cobble-bottomed (128-384 mm diameter) habitat (habitat 2) and a large cobble-bottomed (256-384 mm) habitat of intermediate depth (habitat 3). Brown trout were found to have greater increases in total biomass in habitats 2 and 3 than in habitat 1. The pattern for length did not follow that of biomass as trout had greater increases in total length in habitat 2 than in the other two habitats. Biomass of food in trout diets reflected habitat-specific fish biomass changes, with a greater total biomass of prey as well a greater biomass of the leech, Erpobdella, in habitats 2 and 3 than in habitat 1. There were no habitat-specific differences in the biomass of benthic or drifting invertebrates in the enclosures, with the exception of a tendency for an effect of habitat on the biomass of Erpobdella. Although there may have been habitat-specific differences in food resources that were not detected, it is believed that the higher biomass growth in habitats 2 and 3 may have reflected differences in cover afforded by the deeper water and coarser substrates and/or improved foraging opportunities facilitated by the larger volumes of water in the deeper habitats in which the trout could search for prey.  相似文献

Abstract  In total, 8211 1-year-old and 14839 2-year-old hatchery-reared brown trout, Salmo trutta L., from 11 stocks were released at the mouth of the River Imsa, southwestern Norway. The recapture rates and total estimated yield were higher for 2- than 1-year-old trout, although recapture rates varied between years of release and stocks. The recapture rate increased with mean individual weight at time of release. Total estimated yield from the individual groups of 1+ trout ranged from 2 to 20 kg per 1000 trout released and for 2+ trout between 11 and 250 kg per 1000 fish released. In all cases, yields were lower than the economic break-even yield. Most fish were recaptured the year of release (89.2% of 2+ and 76.2% of 1+ trout). Almost 31% of the recaptures were caught at sea and 69% in fresh water; 95.8% of the latter were taken in the River Imsa trap.  相似文献

During 1985-88, a total of 17500 under-yearling (0+) brown trout. salmo trutta L., were released in Låktabäcken Creek in Swedish Lapland. Of these, 15500 had been reared in a pond adjacent to the creek during their first summer, where they fed on natural prey. The other 2000 were conventionally reared hatchery fish fed dry food pellets. All fish were released in the autumn (size 6O-70mm) at the confluence of the pond outlet and the creek. Electrofishing revealed that the stocked fish gradually spread downstream from the point of release at the expense of the resident wild trout population. In 1989, stocked fish accounted for 70-90% and 30-50% of the trout population in the upper and lower stretches of the creek respectively. No long-term changes in total trout densities or standing crop occurred as a result of stocking. First-year survival of fish released in the creek varied between 15 and 30% over the 4 years. After 3 years, 5% of the stocked fish remained in the creek. Planted fish grew less rapidly than wild fish during the first year in the creek. Pond fish had a higher survival rate than hatchery fish and showed a greater propensity to disperse from the point of release.  相似文献

Abstract. Fingerling (O+) brown trout, Salmo trutta L., pond-reared on natural food or hatchery-reared on artificial food started feeding immediately following their release into a lake or a stream. There was no difference in feeding ability between the hatchery- and the pond-reared fish.  相似文献

The substantial growth of the farmed salmon industry in Europe since the 1970s has highlighted concerns regarding the genetic impact of escaped farmed salmon on wild salmonid stocks. High incidences of salmon × trout hybrids have been recorded in rivers situated near intensive salmon farming in Norway and Scotland, which may be indicative of a breakdown in reproductive isolation between salmon, Salmo salar L., and brown trout, Salmo trutta L. In the present study, salmonid fry and 0+ parr were collected from rivers in western Ireland. Allozyme and minisatellite DNA analysis were carried out on fry to determine the frequency of F1 hybrids from 10 rivers located within 38 km of salmon farms and three rivers at least 80 km from salmon farms. A total of 49 hybrids were recorded from 4135 salmonid fry (frequency = 1.2%). Mitochondrial DNA analysis showed that all hybrids arose from Atlantic salmon female × brown trout male crosses. Hybrid parr were recorded from one of the low-risk rivers (1.0%), but were present in seven out of the 10 catchments located within 38 km of salmon farms, with frequencies ranging from 0.7% to 3.1%. The results of the present survey, which represents the first extensive record of the levels of salmon-trout hybridization in Ireland, are discussed in relation to the continued growth of salmon farming in this country.  相似文献

Abstract. A total of 1680 brown trout, Salmo trutta L., from 63 different localities in Scotland were sampled and examined for 34 loci. Thirteen loci were polymorphic in one or more populations. The mean observed heterozygosity for wild populations ranged from 0.0 to 8-9% (x=4.5%) in the same range as previous studies on this species. Within drainage studies and gene diversity analysis confirms that a large proportion (33%) of total gene diversity was distributed between populations. The Ldh-5(100) allele was common in Scottish populations and its distribution would fit the hypothesis that this allele was indicative of an ancestral trout population in Scotland before the invasion of trout characterized by the Ldh-5(90) allele. The results have important implications for the management of the brown trout genetic resource.  相似文献

Abstract. During the period June 1982-84 hatchery-reared brown trout, Salmo trutta L., fry were Stocked into stretches of the Owendoher. a trout nursery stream on the east coast of Ireland. These experiments were designed to examine the survival of stocked fry and to estimate the carrying capacity of the system. During the first year fry were stocked into sectors already supptorting wild fish at densities normal for the system. In the following year fry numbers were artificially reduced prior to stocking with the hatchery-reared fish. Mortality of the stocked fry was high after release with less than 33% of the fish surviving beyond the first 3 weeks. No stocked fish survived after October 1982. In the second year, however, 2-9% of the fish survived. The best survival rates were achieved where wild fry numbers were lowest. Regardless of the initial stocking density the various experiments yielded autumn fry densities (0.07-0.7 fish/m2) similar to those at unstocked sites (0.1-0.62 fish/m2).
Stocking did not increase recruitment to the 1+ group and again 1+ densities (0.15-0.35 fish/m2) similar to unstocked sites (0.07-0.39 fish/m2) were obtained at the end of each year. These results suggest that spawning and recruitment in the Owendoher yield population densities approaching the maximum carrying capacity of the stream. The system appears to support a maximum summer fry density in the region of 1 fish/m2 and a maximum autumn density of 0.7 fish/m2.  相似文献

Hatchery-reared, juvenile European grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.), and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., were each stocked six times into an area of a semi-natural stream. The order in which the two species were released was switched after every second experimental stocking. Temporal and spatial post-stocking dispersal, effects of previously stocked species, feeding behaviour and the influences of sex and size were studied. During each 48-h experimental release period, some fish were recaptured in a trap situated 200 m downstream from the stocking site, and fish remaining in the stream after each experimental release were caught by electric fishing. Significantly more grayling than trout moved downstream and left the semi-natural stream. Proportions of stocked grayling recaptured in the trap within 2 h and from 2 to 48 h post stocking in the stream were 36.4% and 10.0%, respectively. Corresponding recapture rates for brown trout were both 1.5%. Most of the grayling and brown trout that did not leave the stream early were recaptured in deep, slow-moving water at low velocities in the release area. The presence of grayling at the time that the brown trout were stocked resulted in significantly fewer brown trout staying in the upper part of the stream. Within 48 h of their release, 33.3% and 22.8% of the grayling and brown trout, respectively, had eaten natural food items. The mean length of brown trout recaptured in the upper part of the stocking area was significantly lower than that of fish recaptured in the lower part and in the trap. Among brown trout, males showed a significantly greater propensity to eat and to stay in the upper part of the stream near the stocking site compared with females . Brown trout with natural food items in their stomachs had significantly lower mean length than trout without such items. No sex- or size-related differences were found in the spatial distribution or feeding activity of grayling.  相似文献

Weirs and traps were used to monitor the movement of two strains of stocked brown trout, Salmo trutta L. Within 24 h of stocking, 15% ( n  = 13) of a Danish strain and 21% ( n  = 19) of a hybrid strain moved at least 100 m from their release site. In the following 5–6 days, no further movement was found for Danish fish, but hybrid fish continued to move, totaling 32% ( n  = 29) of the fish stocked. During this same period, 36 wild brown trout (≈ 3.5% of the population) were captured, moving over the weirs. Two weeks later, and one week after a flood, 70% ( n  = 59) of the Danish strain were recovered within their release sites and 89% ( n  = 76) were recovered during an electric fishing survey within the 3.5-km-long experimental area. In contrast, 43% ( n  = 31) of the hybrid strain were recaptured in their release sites and 49% ( n  = 45) within the experimental area. The total recapture of wild adult fish was only 16% ( n  = 41). The flooding event was insignificant in comparison with strain-specific behaviours in determining patterns of movement and residency.Austria, brown trout, floods, movement, stocking.  相似文献

Abstract. The diet of brown trout, Salmo trutta L., in the Owendoher Stream, a tributary of the River Dodder, was examined at monthly intervals from June 1981 to May 1982. The diets of the three main age groups, 0+, 1 + and 2+/3+ fish, have been separately described and compared. Ephemeropteran nymphs, larval and adult chironomids as well as a variety of other adult insects were the most frequently consumed foods. While 0+ trout largely concentrated on aquatic organisms, adult insects, in particular those of terrestrial origin, became progressively more important in the diet with increasing age of the fish. Daily ration calculations indicated that food intake was highest during the summer and early autumn months when it was well in excess of maintenance requirements. This corresponded to a period of good growth. For the remainder of the year food intake was not much higher than maintenance requirements. In fact, 1+ and older (2+/3+) fish probably experienced an energy deficit on occasions during the winter which was reflected in their poor condition and weight loss. The relationship between growth and production in the system are further discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. This study was designed to investigate the potential of heat shock to produce triploidy in brown trout, Salmo trutta L., and to develop a methodof routinely identifying triploids in this species. Triploids were produced in all heat-shocked batches and were identified by the size of their erythrocyte nucleus, which had a volume ratio of 1:1-57 relative to diploid controls. Cytogenetic and flow cytometric analyses confirmed that trout with the larger nuclei were triploid. Heat shock of 28°Cof 10 min duration initiated 5-15 min post-insemination produced high rates of triploidy in experimental batches (88-2-100%), later shocks at 20-25 min producing lower rates (down to 60%). Reproducibilicy of tripioid rates was generally good, a maximum difference between replicates of 21.9% being observed, the majority of differences being considerably less. The highest triploid yield was produced with a heat shock of 28°C for 10 min initiated at 10 or 20 min post-insemination, the difference between replicates being due to variability in survival to hatch. Survival to hatch was generally lower in groups having higher rates of tripioidy.  相似文献

Abstract. An 'oedema syndrome' caused mortality of 55·5% in brood brown trout approximately 2 months after spawning. The pathology and clinical biochemistry of the condition are described. It is suggested that the severe hypoproteinaemia and anaemia were due mainly to the traditional reduction in feed levels prior to spawning at a time when the water temperatures were abnormally high. It is also suggested, however, that the syndrome would not have occurred if the fish had not developed an aeromonad infection prior to stripping. Concurrent fungal infection and subsequent extremely low water temperatures are also thought to have played a role.  相似文献
