The aqueous solubilities and octanol–water partition coefficients (KOW) of the benzoylphenylurea (BPU) insecticides teflubenzuron, chlorfluazuron, flufenoxuron and hexaflumuron were determined in comparison with the more extensively studied diflubenzuron. Both teflubenzuron and hexaflumuron were substantially less water‐soluble (9.4 (± 0.3) µg litre−1 and 16.2 (± 0.5) µg litre−1 in water, respectively) than the value previously reported for diflubenzuron (89 (± 4) µg litre−1 in water). Log KOW values for diflubenzuron, teflubenzuron, hexaflumuron, flufenoxuron and chlorfluazuron were 3.8, 5.4, 5.4, 6.2 and 6.6, respectively, as determined using reverse‐phase HPLC. Photodegradation of hexaflumuron, teflubenzuron and diflubenzuron in water indicated hexaflumuron to be the most rapidly degraded of the three compounds at pH 7.0 (t1/2 = 8.6 (± 0.4) h) and pH 9.0 (t1/2 = 5 (± 1) h); diflubenzuron was the slowest of the three pesticides to degrade in pH 7.0 (17 (± 4) h) and pH 9.0 (8 (± 2) h) buffered water. In a solar simulator using river water buffered to pH 9.0, teflubenzuron, hexaflumuron and diflubenzuron half‐lives were 20 (± 4), 15 (± 2) and 12 (± 1) h, respectively; dark controls showed no loss of parent BPU over similar time periods. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The chitin synthesis inhibitors diflubenzuron and teflubenzuron have recently become ineffective for the control of Spodoptera exigua in floricultural crops. An extended laboratory test with second-instar larvae of S. exigua on Vicia faba plants was carried out to determine the influence of synergists on the biological activity of three benzoylphenyl ureas (BPUs). The co-application of piperonyl butoxide, an oxidase inhibitor, did not increase the activity of diflubenzuron, teflubenzuron or hexaflumuron. The best results were obtained with diethyl maleate, for suppressing glutathione S-transferase activity, and with dimethoate, as a hydrolase inhibitor. A joint application of diflubenzuron (at a concentration which resulted in 43% survival) with diethyl maleate or dimethoate gave only 6.2 and 8.9% surviving larvae, respectively. In addition, development to fourth-instar larvae was inhibited. The more stable teflubenzuron was synergized by both compounds to a much lesser extent than diflubenzuron. None of the synergists had a significant effect on the activity of hexaflumuron, which was the most potent insecticide of the three BPUs tested against S. exigua.  相似文献

In teflubenzuron and teflubenzuron/chlorfluazuron laboratory-selected sub-populations of a Cameron Highlands (1988) strain of Plutella xylostella L., resistance to teflubenzuron reached much greater levels than chlorfluazuron but declined at a correspondingly greater rate to give similar resistance levels after 10–13 generations. There was little evidence of cross-resistance to flufenoxuron and none to hexaflumuron in these populations. Reselection of a Cameron Highlands population with teflubenzuron after 22 generations resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) increase in resistance after three generations. In two more recently collected strains from lowland Malaysia, Sawi (1991) and Serdang (1992) high levels of resistance to teflubenzuron were found, but only the former showed any apparent resistance to chlorfluazuron. There was also evidence of resistance to diflubenzuron in the Sawi strain (Serdang not examined). Resistance to teflubenzuron appeared to be unstable in unselected sub-populations of both lowland strains. Selection of the Sawi strain with teflubenzuron did not effect cross-resistance to chlorfluazuron, while attempted selection with chlorfluazuron had no effect on resistance to either compound. Selection of the Sawi strain with diflubenzuron increased resistance to teflubenzuron but had no effect on resistance to chlorfluazuron. In contrast to the Sawi strain, selection of the Serdang strain with teflubenzuron resulted in cross-resistance to chlorfluazuron. Synergist experiments with piperonyl butoxide (PB) and S,S,S-tributyl phosphorotrithioate (DEF) suggested that resistance to teflubenzuron in the lowland strains may involve both microsomal monooxygenases and esterases. The ovicidal activity of teflubenzuron, chlorfluazuron, hexaflumuron and flufenoxuron was consistently less than their activity against second-instar larvae, hexaflumuron, followed by teflubenzuron, showing the greatest relative ovicidal activity. Hexaflumuron was markedly more active than teflubenzuron against eggs from acylurea-selected Cameron Highlands populations and there was some evidence that resistance to teflubenzuron may be expressed at a lower level in eggs than in larvae in one such strain.  相似文献

Effective treatment with juvenile hormone analogues (JHAs) of early penultimate or early last-instar locust hoppers induces a supernumerary ‘extra’ nymphal instar. These ‘extra’ nymphs, also termed ‘adultoids’, die in the course of, or shortly after, an ‘extra’ moult. Less effective treatment results in imperfect adults with crumpled twisted wings which presumably limit their flight and migratory abilities. Extremely effective treatment leads to death in the next moult. Comparing dose-response relations of (7S)-methoprene, fenoxycarb, pyriproxyfen and a new JHA, R70-1 (ethyl cis-N-{2-[4-(2-hydroxycyclohept-1-ylmethyl)phenoxy]ethyl}carbamate), we revealed that route of administration, instar of the recipient hopper, and species may alter over 1000-fold the ED50 for the same JHA. Locusta migratoria migratorioides is much more susceptible to JHAs than Schistocerca gregaria. The lowest ED50 found to induce adultoids and subsequent death in the ‘extra’ moult was 0·12 μg pyriproxyfen injected in olive oil to early penultimate instar hoppers of L. m. migratorioides (about 0·5 μg g-1 fresh weight). R70-1 was more active than pyriproxyfen following the more practical topical application to early last-instar hoppers of L. m. migratorioides, 5·9 μg and 46 μg per hopper, respectively (about 10 μg g-1 and 78 μg g-1 fresh weight). Curcuminoids, the major colouring constituents of Curcuma longa (turmeric) rhizome powder, comprise mainly three closely related curcumins (I, II and III). A simple method has been devised for their efficient extraction and separation. Their structures have been confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and unique mass fragmentation pattern. Curcumin‐I, the major constituent has been converted to five alkyl ether derivatives, which have been tested along with the parent compounds and other extractives for insect growth inhibitory activity against Schistocerca gregaria and Dysdercus koenigii nymphs. At 20 µg per nymph, benzene extract and dibutyl curcumin‐I were the most active (60% inhibition) against S gregaria, whereas at 50 µg per nymph these substances exhibited moderate growth‐inhibitory activity (45%) against D koenigii nymphs. At these concentrations, turmeric oil caused 50–60% nymphal mortality in both test insects. The insect control activity of most of the turmeric products was comparable to or better than that of a commercial neem formulation. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The chitin precursor [14C] N-acetylglucosamine injected into the haemolymph of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) larva was incorporated into the chitin exponentially with time. When caterpillars were injected with precursor at the commencement of feeding on acylurea-treated leaf discs, flufenoxuron, teflubenzuron and diflubenzuron were found to be equally effective inhibitors of chitin synthesis, measured after 21 h. The dose response curves by feeding are not parallel, indicating that the relative potency of the compounds will vary across the dose range. When chitin precursor was injected simultaneously with topically applied diflubenzuron, flufenoxuron or teflubenzuron, all three acylureas were found to be equally effective as inhibitors of chitin synthesis when measured after five hours. The I50values (50% inhibition of chitin synthesis) were not significantly different; average 600 ng, compared with LD50values (50% lethal dose) of13 ng for flufenoxuron and teflubenzuron but 130 ng for diflubenzuron (topical application). Injection of precursor 24 h after topical application of insecticide gave an I50value which had dropped 670- and 150-fold for flufenoxuron and teflubenzuron respectively but only 20-fold for diflubenzuron. It is postulated that the reason for the low increase in diflubenzuron effectiveness with time was due either to less diflubenzuron than flufenoxuron reaching the site of action, or more probably, a faster rate of metabolism and excretion for diflubenzuron. The lower toxicity of diflubenzuron compared with flufenoxuron and teflubenzuron may not be due to any inherent differences in biochemical effectiveness, but rather to different penetration/metabolism properties.  相似文献

The acylurea chitin synthesis inhibitor, teflubenzuron (‘Nomolt’® SC) showed no apparent activity against adult males of Diadegma semiclausum Hellén or Cotesia plutellae Kurdj. when applied to foliage at a rate ( = 50 g a.i. ha?1) approximating to 2 × field usage. In contrast, the pyrethroid cypermethrin (‘Cymbush’® EC) showed appreciable foliar activity (at rates = 10–50 ga.i. ha?1) to D. semiclausum but showed low activity against C. plutellae. When single adult female D. semiclausum were pre-treated with teflubenzuron (= 50 g a.i. ha?1) and then exposed to 5. 10. 25, 50 or 100 second-instar host larvae, the number of purasitoid cocoons formed was significantly reduced compared with controls except at the lowest host density (P 0-05). However, there was no evidence that teflubenzuron had a host density-dependent effect on parasitism by D. semiclausum. Teflubenzuron had no significant effect on host parasitism in an equivalent experiment with C. plutellae (P > 0-05) except at the median host density. When batches of ten host larvae were introduced at hourly intervals to female D. semiclausum pre-treated with teflubenzuron (= 50 g a.i. ha?1), the number of cocoons formed in the first two batches was not significantly different from untreated controls (P > 0-05), whereas teflubenzuron significantly reduced the number of cocoons in the next three batches of host larvae (P < 0-05). This suggests that teflubenzuron may affect chitin synthesis in developing eggs within female D. semiclausum but has little or no effect on pre-formed eggs which are more likely to be oviposited first. Teflubenzuron had no significant (P > 0-05) effect on parasitism by C. plutellae when presented with batches of host larvae. When female D. semiclausum and C. plutellae were placed in the same host arena, the former showed a 3-fold greater rate of parasitism. Pre-treatment with teflubenzuron significantly reduced parasitism by D. semiclausum (P > 0-05) but had no significant effect with C. plutellae (P > 0-05) although the latter species failed to exploit the reduction in parasitism by D. semiclausum. The differential response of D. semiclausum and C. plutellae to insecticides is discussed in relation to the relative rates of establishment of these species in Malaysia.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Diaphorina citri populations in Florida are developing resistance to commonly used neurotoxic insecticides. Alternatives to neurotoxins, such as insect growth regulators, are needed to control this season-long subtropical pest to prevent or delay development of insecticide resistance. In the present investigation, two insect growth regulators (IGRs), buprofezin and diflubenzuron, were evaluated against various developmental stages of D. citri. RESULTS: The 0–1-day-old D. citri eggs were more susceptible to buprofezin and diflubenzuron than the 3–4-day-old eggs. Adult emergence was completely suppressed by treating first- or third-instar nymphs with buprofezin or diflubenzuron at 30–240 or 23–184 µg mL−1 rates respectively. Treatment of fifth-instar nymphs with diflubenzuron at a rate of 184 µg mL−1 and with buprofezin at 30–240 µg mL−1 rates resulted in approximately 20 and 15–80% reductions in adult emergence respectively. The mean number of eggs per plant was reduced at 5 days after topical treatment with diflubenzuron. Mean egg hatch per plant was reduced at 5 and 6–15 days after topical treatments with buprofezin and diflubenzuron respectively. CONCLUSION: Buprofezin and diflubenzuron effectively suppressed D. citri adult emergence. D. citri were more susceptible as early (first–third-instar) than late (fifth-instar) nymphs. Both IGRs inhibited egg production and egg hatch. Reduction in the number of subsequent offspring suggests reduced vertical transmission of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, the pathogen thought to cause citrus greening disease. The present results indicate that both IGRs tested here should be effective tools for rotation in insecticide-based D. citri management programs. ABSTRACT

Eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), workers were exposed for 7 days to one of five chitin synthesis inhibitors (CSIs): diflubenzuron, hexaflumuron, lufenuron, noviflumuron, and novaluron in commercially available bait matrices. Following a 7 day exposure period, termite donors (D) were combined with naïve (not exposed) termite recipients (R) at five D:R ratios (20:0, 15:5, 10:10, 5:15, and 1:19) and mortality determined daily for up to 68 days. Lethal time and percent mortality data suggest efficient transfer at all D:R ratios for all CSIs tested, except diflubenzuron at 1:19. Despite the data indicating transfer of lufenuron in bioassay, this material may not be effective in field use based on behavioral observations that include limited movement by donors. We also report frequency of visible evidence of CSI intoxication, including the previously described “jackknife” pose and an additional physical deformity, we term “curled-body”. The implications these data and observations have for laboratory evaluation and field population management using commercial termite baiting systems is discussed.  相似文献

Topical application of the synergists piperonyl butoxide (PB) and S,S,S-tributyl phosphorotrithioate (DEF) to second-instar larvae of a standard laboratory strain (FS) and an unselected Malaysian field strain (CH) of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella had no significant effect on the toxicity of the acylurea insecticides, chlorfluazuron and teflubenzuron, in a subsequent leafdip bioassay. In contrast, pre-treatment with PB or DEF in acylurea-selected subpopulations of the CH strain with varying levels of cross-resistance to chlorfluazuron and teflubenzuron significantly increased (up to 34-fold and 28-fold, respectively) the toxicity of both compounds, suggesting that microsomal monooxygenases and esterases may be involved in resistance. The addition of a mineral oil, ‘Sunspray 6E’, to topically-applied chlorfluazuron consistently reduced its LD50 value, and the effect of the oil appeared to be greatest on the most resistant population of P. xylostella. However, the effects of the oil were not significant (P > 0·05) and further studies are necessary to determine whether a penetration factor is present in the CH strain.  相似文献

The toxicity of the acylurea, teflubenzuron, was assessed against larval stages of the hymenopteran parasitoids, Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov and Diadegma semiclausum Hellén in a susceptible laboratory strain and a teflubenzuron-resistant field strain of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. In fourth-instar hosts (L4), when both parasitoid species were in their final larval instar, teflubenzuron significantly (P < 0.05) reduced emergence of adult D. semiclausum but had no significant (P > 0.05) effect on C. plutellae, although a small proportion of the latter were unable to reproduce. Treatment of L4 hosts with teflubenzuron ( > LD50) had no significant (P > 0.05) effect on the fecundity of surviving females of D. semiclausum. Similar differential toxicity with teflubenzuron was observed in L2 hosts, when parasitoids were at the egg or early larval instar stage. There was no apparent increased effect of teflubenzuron on either species of parasitoid when highly resistant (c. 4000-fold) L2 hosts (field strain) were treated with concentrations of teflubenzuron two to three orders of magnitude greater than in equivalent experiments with the susceptible host strain. This suggests that host resistance to teflubenzuron confers some protection to both species of parasitoid. Uptake experiments with [14C]teflubenzuron showed that accumulation of radioactivity was much greater in D. semiclausum than in C. plutellae and this may account for the differential toxicity observed. The results are discussed in relation to the field status of these parasitoid species. The influence of insecticide resistance in the host on endo-larval parasitoids is also considered.  相似文献

A laboratory evaluation of the acute toxicity of diflubenzuron against the final stage of Oxya japonica nymphs showed that it was more effective in preventing the development of the nymphs into the adults when applied topically, than when injected. Histological studies revealed that treated nymphs that subsequently died, before or during ecdysis, suffered from severe endocuticular lesions. Comparable abnormalities and disruption of endocuticular deposition and growth were also seen in nymphs that were treated topically with diflubenzuron at 50 or 200 μg a.i. per insect, although these nymphs appeared normal externally.  相似文献

A field trial was conducted in 1994 to determine the foliar deposit of tebufenozide (RH5992), applied aerially, and its efficacy against spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.). A commercial 240 g litre-1 formulation of the insecticide (Mimic 240LV) was mixed with water, dyed with a tracer dye (Rhodamine WT) and sprayed with a light fixed-wing aircraft. Six application strategies were tested. Five used 70 g AI ha-1 in a spray volume of 1 or 2 litre-1 ha-1 with single or double applications; the sixth was an unsprayed control. Results show that the spectra of the spray applications were, with one exception, fairly uniform. Volume and number median diameters ranged from 100 to 130 μm and 27 to 72 μm, respectively. Mean number of drops cm-2 on Kromekote cards were <2·0 for strategies where either 1 or 2 litre ha-1 were sprayed. Nevertheless no one strategy produced droplet densities that were significantly different (P<0·05) from the other strategies. Tebufenozide recovered from foliage averaged 2·5 to 5·9 μg g foliage-1 when 1 litre ha-1 was sprayed and 5·8 to 6·8 μg g foliage-1 after 2 litre ha-1 were sprayed. When a single application was the strategy used, the mean number of droplets cm-2 and μg tebufenozide g foliage-1 ranged from 1·2 to 1·4 and 2·5 to 5·9, respectively. With double applications, the same response parameters ranged from 0·3 to 1·9 and 2·5 to 6·8, respectively. Budworm population reductions (%) and the number of larvae that survived tebufenozide treatments were significantly different (P<0·05) from the controls. After strategies that used 1 litre spray ha-1, mean percentage population reductions ranged from 61·4 to 93·6 whereas populations were reduced by 85·6 to 98·3% when 2 litre ha-1 were sprayed. After double applications the mean percentage population reductions ranged from 93·6 to 98·3, but single application strategies resulted in mean reductions of 61 to 86%. Mean population reductions in the controls were 61%. The mean number of larvae per branch that survived spray strategies of 1 litre ha-1 ranged from 1·3 to 7·4, and from 0·4 to 1·3 when 2 litre ha-1 was the spray volume. In the controls an average of 10·2 larvae survived. With one exception, mean percentage defoliation in the treated areas was also significantly less (P<0·05) than that in the control. Mean defoliation in trees sprayed at 1 litre spray ha-1 ranged from 40 to 62·8% whereas those treated at 2 litre ha-1 had mean defoliation levels from 31·5 to 62·8%. In contrast, average defoliation in the controls was 92·1%. When a single application was the spray strategy, mean defoliation ranged from 31·5 to 62·8%. These data imply that a double application of tebufenozide at 70 g in 2 litre ha-1 was the most efficacious strategy. However, analyses of the data also show that the primary influence on deposits and defoliation was interactions between number of applications and spray. Eleven strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) genotypes from the University of California breeding programme known to be resistant to verticillium wilt were inoculated with Verticillium dahliae. Individual plants were given a resistance score based on the severity of visual symptoms, and the extent of colonization was quantified as the percentage of petioles not colonized by the pathogen. Both resistance scores and the percentage of pathogen‐free petioles decreased significantly from May to June (P < 0·05) during each of two growing seasons, indicating a progression of both colonization and symptom expression. Even the most resistant genotypes had plants with some infected petioles, and manifested some symptoms of verticillium wilt. Significant (P < 0·05) genotypic variance was detected for the percentage of pathogen‐free petioles, but not for resistance score. The percentage of pathogen‐free petioles had a strongly positive genotypic correlation (rg = 0·77, P < 0·01) with resistance score, indicating that about 60% of the genotypic variation for visual symptoms in this set of resistant genotypes was explained by the extent of colonization of individual plants by V. dahliae. Conversely, the genotypic correlation between the percentage of pathogen‐free petioles and the resistance score for plants sampled in May (rg = 0·74, P < 0·01) was smaller than that for plants harvested in July (rg = 0·93, P < 0·01). Together, these results suggest that the overall performance of strawberry genotypes in the presence of V. dahliae can be enhanced by both resistance and tolerance, but that tolerance may be less stable over the course of a season. Distinguishing between these two mechanisms may require evaluations that supplement visual assessments of resistance.  相似文献

The efficacy of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) subsp. kurstaki HD-1 (‘Dipel’™; Btk; CryIA & CryII) and Bt. subsp. aizawai (‘Florbac’™; Bta; CryIA & CryIC) was assessed against larvae from various field populations of Plutella xylostella (F2 generation) collected in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia in April 1994 and a lowland population (SERD 2; F10 generation) collected in December 1993. Evidence of resistance to Btk and to a lesser extent Bta is reported in these populations (LC50 Toxicity Ratios [TR]=3–14 and 2–8 respectively), most notably in SERD 2. The first recorded evidence of resistance to abamectin (TR=17–195-fold) in field populations of P. xylostella is also reported. In an unselected sub-population of SERD 2, the TR values for Btk, Bta and abamectin declined 2- to 3-fold (P<0·01) over six generations in the laboratory (F10–F16) while in sub-populations of SERD 2 selected with these products (F11–F15) there was a significant (P<0·01) increase in the TR (15-, 3- and 2·5-fold respectively) when compared with the F10 generation. This suggests the presence of marked resistance to Btk and some resistance to Bta and abamectin. There is also evidence of slight cross-resistance to Btk in the Bta-selected sub-population but no evidence for the reverse selection of resistance or for cross-resistance between Btk and abamectin. Concurrent selection studies (F11–F15) with another sub-population of SERD 2 demonstrated resistance to the acylurea insect growth regulator, teflubenzuron (‘Nomolt’™) (29-fold increase in TR). Based on the selection experiments with SERD 2, estimates of realised heritability (h2) of resistance gave very high values for teflubenzuron and Btk (c.0·7) and moderate values for abamectin and Bta (c.0·3). The results are discussed in relation to integrated pest management (IPM) and insecticide resistance management (IRM) strategies for P. xylostella.  相似文献

Abstract

Penfluron and diflubenzuron, both chitin synthesis inhibitors known to be highly effective against nymphs of Poekilocerus pictus (F.), were tested against the adult for their possible effects upon reproduction. These compounds were found to have the maximum effect, when no eggs were laid, if both sexes were treated. The eggs of treated males × untreated females did not hatch and those of treated females × untreated males gave rise to nymphs which died before reaching maturity.  相似文献

The activities of the acylurea insect growth regulators, chlorfluazuron, teflubenzuron and difubenzuron, and the neurotoxic macrocyclic lactone, abamectin were assessed against a laboratory susceptible (FS) strain and a field (Cameron Highlands, Malaysia (CH)) strain of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. using a leaf-dip bioassay at 20°C. The time taken to achieve end-point mortality was found to vary considerably (9–17 days), being fastest with abamectin against the FS strain and slowest with difubenzuron against the CH strain. The order of activity (LC50 at F6/7) against second-instar larvae of both strains was: abamectin > chlorfluazuron = teflubenzuron ? difubenzuron. Subsequent assays (F14) with the acylureas, flufenoxuron and hexaflumuron against the FS strain suggested that the former was slightly more active than chlorfluazuron or teflubenzuron, the latter slightly less active. The CH population was found to be 12.6-, 6.7-, 6.4- and 2.3-fold less sensitive to difubenzuron, teflubenzuron, chlorfluazuron and abamectin respectively than the FS strain. Selection of sub-populations of the CH strain with chlorfluazuron (CHL-SEL) and teflubenzuron (TEF-SEL) for six generations (F6-11), resulted in LC50 resistance ratios of 109- and 315-fold respectively when compared with the FS strain, equivalent to an 18- and a 46-fold increase in resistance compared with the unselected CH strain. Marked cross-resistance was also demonstrated between chlorfluazuron and teflubenzuron in both sub-populations. However, there was no evidence of cross-resistance to dijlubenzuron and abamectin and little or no cross-resistance to flufenoxuron and hexaflumuron. Resistance to chlorfluazuron and teflubenzuron appeared to be relatively unstable in the TEF-SEL compared with the CHL-SEL sub-population (over 6–9 generations). However, reselection of the TEF-SEL population with chlorfluazuron (F18–20) led to a very rapid increase in resistance to chlorfluazuron and particularly teflubenzuron. For the latter compound, resistance factors of about 1000000 were obtained (F19, 21). Such values are probably only semi-quantitative, as above a certain level of resistance feeding bioassays with acylureas (compounds which are active to a significant extent by ingestion) are likely to become rate-limiting.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance is a likely cause of field control failures of Tuta absoluta, but the subject has been little studied. Therefore, resistance to ten insecticides was surveyed in seven representative field populations of this species. The likelihood of control failures was assessed, as well as weather influence and the spatial dependence of insecticide resistance. RESULTS: No resistance or only low resistance levels were observed for pyrethroids (bifenthrin and permethrin), abamectin, spinosad, Bacillus thuringiensis and the mixture deltamethrin + triazophos (<12.5‐fold). In contrast, indoxacarb exhibited moderate levels of resistance (up to 27.5‐fold), and chitin synthesis inhibitors exhibited moderate to high levels of resistance (up to 222.3‐fold). Evidence of control failures was obtained for bifenthrin, permethrin, diflubenzuron, teflubenzuron, triflumuron and B. thuringiensis. Weather conditions favour resistance to some insecticides, and spatial dependence was observed only for bifenthrin and permethrin. CONCLUSION: Insecticide resistance in field populations of the tomato pinworm prevails for the insecticides nowadays most frequently used against them—the chitin synthesis inhibitors (diflubenzuron, triflumuron and teflubenzuron). Local selection favoured by weather conditions and dispersal seem important for pyrethroid resistance evolution among Brazilian populations of T. absoluta and should be considered in designing pest management programmes.
