It is established that soil hydrophobicity reduces soil infiltration rates, and enhances runoff flow and soil erosion. Water repellency has been studied with special interest in coniferous and eucalyptus forests, particularly after burning, but the number of studies concerning Mediterranean heathlands is still very low. In this paper, we study the occurrence and persistence of water repellency in soil samples collected under different plant species susceptible to induce soil hydrophobicity (Erica arborea, Erica australis, Calluna vulgaris, Quercus lusitanica and Rhododendron ponticum) in a natural protected area in southern Spain. Great attention has been paid to the relationships between soil water repellency and environmental factors as organic matter content and soil acidity. The largest hydrophobicity was measured in soil samples collected under E. australis, E. arborea and C. vulgaris. For these species, the organic matter content and pH showed positive and negative correlations with the persistence of water repellency, respectively. The hydrophobicity originated by humic substances in the soil seems to be the only explanation for slight soil water repellency under Q. lusitanica or R. ponticum. The patchy patterns of occurrence and persistence of soil water repellency is governed by the spatial distribution of the studied species and modulated by other factors. Soil surface water repellent layers reduce the infiltration rates and limit the water storage capacity. However, the macropore flow can be enhanced on non-repellent layers, cracks or roots such us the wetting's front shown. The vegetation effects on soil hydrology should be considered for afforestation works and flooding control.  相似文献

研究了维生素C(Vc)、茶多酚(TP)以及牛至(Origanum vulgare)和鼠尾草(Salvia farinacea)等植物提取物对鲜牛肉的护色效果。采用4℃冰箱冷藏经处理过的鲜牛肉1个星期,使其发生氧化反应,然后测定其生成的变肌红蛋白的相对含量和pH值,并配合色泽感官评定来评价提取物的抗氧化性能。结果表明:Vc与TP复配剂的抗氧化性明显好于单一抗氧化剂的抗氧化性,其最佳配比为Vc250mg/L、TP32.5mg/L;在复配的基础上分别添加牛至500mg/L、鼠尾草300mg/L的抗氧化效果最好。  相似文献

Abstract

Nine Colorado soils were treated with sodium borate and were subjected to 3 wetting and drying cycles. These soils were extracted with hot water for boron analysis. Plant samples, including NBS standard reference materials (SRM) 1571, 1570, 1573, were dry ashed and wet digested using nitric acid. All soil extracts and plant digests were analyzed for boron using ICP‐AES and colorimetrically using the Azomethine‐H method.

A high degree of correlation (r2 = .99) was found between boron determination by ICP and the Azomethine‐H method for soil extracts and plant digests. The Azomethine‐H method gave B values 9% higher than ICP‐AES on the average.

Boron levels determined by ICP were similar to NBS boron values for both the dry ashed and wet digested SRM plant samples. Boron levels determined colorimetrically were comparable to the NBS values for dry ashed SRM plant samples. Plant samples digested in nitric acid could not be analyzed for boron by the Azomethine‐H colorimetric method due to interferences resulting from nitrate complexes in the wet digest.  相似文献

(13)C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was explored as a simple and efficient technique for the quantitative analysis of nonpolar metabolites in plants. The method was first optimized with a mixture of known metabolites and then applied to the nonpolar leaf extracts of plants harvested in the Valencian community (eastern Spain) belonging to three different genera: Euphorbia (Euphorbiaceae), Araujia (Apocynaceae), and Morus (Moraceae). Furthermore, an exhaustive analysis of Euphorbia characias leaf and stem extracts from different geographic locations allowed that quantitative (13)C NMR spectroscopy is a suitable tool for metabolic profiling purpose.  相似文献

The incidence of cardiovascular disease and endothelial dysfunction is low in the Mediterranean area, where the major proportion of daily calories comes from plant food, high in antioxidant polyphenols. It has been shown that a reduced production or enhanced inactivation of endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) is involved in the onset of endothelial dysfunction. We investigated the effects of Mediterranean wild plant, that is, wild artichoke and thyme, phenolic-rich extracts on NO release by porcine aortic endothelial cells (PAECs; by using indirect methods) and by cerebral cell membrane homogenates (by using direct NO detection). NO release by PAECs was significantly potentiated by 234% and 135% by wild artichoke and thyme extracts (10(-6) mol/L), respectively. Direct detection of NO release by brain membranes also showed significantly increased NO production after wild artichoke addition (+35.4%). Further, the release of another vasorelaxant factor by PAECs, that is, prostacyclin, was significantly increased by wild artichoke and thyme (10(-6) mol/L) (+269% and +190%, respectively). Investigation of the mechanism(s) of action of wild artichoke and thyme suggests maintenance of an intracellular reduced environment, as previously shown for ascorbate. Even though these data require in vivo confirmation, they suggest that regular intake of bioactive compounds from Mediterranean wild plants contributes to maintenance of proper vasomotion and to the low incidence of atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction recorded in the Mediterranean area.  相似文献

Measuring asparagine synthetase activity in crude plant extracts   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Asparagine synthetase B (AS) is the primary enzyme responsible for asparagine synthesis in plants. Routine biochemical studies of this enzyme's activity have been hindered by several problems including enzyme instability and rapid physiological turnover, endogenous inhibitors, competing pathways, and asparaginase activity. We describe an extraction procedure and assay conditions that provide a reliable, direct assay for the determination of AS activity in crude plant extracts. This assay performed well with several leguminous species and the enzyme preparation retained activity for up to 3 weeks when stored at -80 degrees C. Radio-HPLC detection enabled quantitative measurement of de novo aspargine synthesis in the extracts. Optimal activity was obtained with 1 mM glutamine and 10 mM ATP in the reaction assay. Aminooxyacetic acid (AOA, 1 mM) which prevents the assimilation of aspartate into the TCA cycle, was necessary to measure AS activity in peas, but not in lupine or soybean.  相似文献

In two natural heathland vegetations, we analysed the effect of turf cutting on spore numbers of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Next to this, we performed a controlled factorial experiment to examine the role of AMF for germination and establishment of Arnica montana in both turf cut and non-turf cut situations. AMF spore numbers decreased with soil depth, and, along with the topsoil, almost all AMF spores were removed with the removal of the acidified and/or eutrophied organic layer. Recolonisation of AMF spore numbers after turf cutting was slow: spore numbers of approximately 60-95 spores g−1 dry soil were found two and a half years after turf cutting, corresponding with 55-70% of AMF spore numbers found in natural field populations of A. montana. Since AMF colonisation increased establishment and biomass, and decreased mortality of A. montana, it was suggested that lack of AMF after turf removal might complicate the establishment of this herbaceous species. Removal of organic material as a management measure should therefore carefully be applied, taking in consideration the low recolonisation rates of AMF as this can markedly effect the success of restoration.  相似文献

Little is known about how plant biochemistry influences the grazing behavior of animals consuming heterogeneous plant communities. The biochemical profiles of grassland species are mostly restricted to major nutritional characteristics, although recent developments in analytical techniques and data analysis have made possible the detailed analysis of minor components that may influence animal feeding preferences, performance, and health. In the present study, gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF/MS) was used to profile the abundances of metabolites in nine specific heathland plant groups and in three mixed forage diets containing 10, 20, or 30% heather (Calluna vulgaris) and also in plasma and feces from sheep offered one of the three diets. Statistical and chemometric approaches, that is, principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), were used to discriminate between these diets and between individual animals maintained on these diets. It is shown that GC-TOF/MS analysis of sheep plasma allowed distinction between the very similar diets by PCA and HCA, and, moreover, the plant metabolites responsible for the differences observed have been identified. Furthermore, metabolite markers of herbage mixtures and individual plant groups have been identified, and markers have been detected in sheep plasma and feces.  相似文献

The glycine betaine content of higher plants can be determined by rapid and simple isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography on a C(18) column. The method described is particularly suitable for a large number of samples. Starting from a complex dry plant, it consists of a single aqueous extraction followed by a purification over a sole cationic ion-exchange resin (AG1, OH(-)) before simple HPLC quantification. The single-step purification was allowed because the AG1, OH(-) resin removed 80% of the total amino acids contained in the extracts. Proline, which interferes with GB HPLC quantification, was completely retained by this column. The optimized method for GB quantification was then validated by comparaison with an (1)H NMR method.  相似文献

A rapid multiresidue method to quantify three different classes of plant hormones has been developed. The reduced concentrations of these metabolites in real samples with complex matrixes require sensitive techniques for their quantification in small amounts of plant tissue. The method described combines high-performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Deuterium-labeled standards were added prior to sample extraction to achieve an accurate quantification of abscisic acid, indole-3-acetic acid, and jasmonic acid in a single run. A simple method of extraction and purification involving only centrifugation, a partition against diethyl ether, and filtration was developed and the analytical method validated in four different plant tissues, citrus leaves, papaya roots, barley seedlings, and barley immature embryos. This method represents a clear advantage because it extensively reduces sample preparation and total time for routine analysis of phytohormones in real plant samples.  相似文献

Antioxidant activity of plant extracts containing phenolic compounds.   总被引:47,自引:0,他引:47  
The antioxidative activity of a total of 92 phenolic extracts from edible and nonedible plant materials (berries, fruits, vegetables, herbs, cereals, tree materials, plant sprouts, and seeds) was examined by autoxidation of methyl linoleate. The content of total phenolics in the extracts was determined spectrometrically according to the Folin-Ciocalteu procedure and calculated as gallic acid equivalents (GAE). Among edible plant materials, remarkable high antioxidant activity and high total phenolic content (GAE > 20 mg/g) were found in berries, especially aronia and crowberry. Apple extracts (two varieties) showed also strong antioxidant activity even though the total phenolic contents were low (GAE < 12.1 mg/g). Among nonedible plant materials, high activities were found in tree materials, especially in willow bark, spruce needles, pine bark and cork, and birch phloem, and in some medicinal plants including heather, bog-rosemary, willow herb, and meadowsweet. In addition, potato peel and beetroot peel extracts showed strong antioxidant effects. To utilize these significant sources of natural antioxidants, further characterization of the phenolic composition is needed.  相似文献

The recovery of a range of semi-natural grassland and heathland plots in southern England is described after disturbance by measured amounts of seasonal trampling. After 2000 passages during a summer period, all plots recover more than 50% live cover in a few weeks of autumn growth. Calluna heathland is an exception and does not recover. After 400 passages during a winter period initial damage is high on grassland plots on clay soils but other grassland plots recover than 50% live cover after a period of six weeks of spring growth. Calluna heathland shows a delayed response to winter trampling and does not recover. Plots trampled both in summer and winter show cumulative effects of wear. These results are compared with those from upland communities.  相似文献

The protein glycation inhibitory activity of aqueous ethanolic extracts from 25 plant tissues was evaluated in vitro using the model system of bovine serum albumin and fructose. The most bioactive plant tissue was Allium cepa (skin), followed by Illicium religiosum (bark and wood), Fagopyrum esculentum (hull), Origanum officinalis (leaf), Rosmarinus officinalis (leaf), Pyrus pyrifolia (bark),Acanthopanax senticosus (bark), Eugenia caryophllata (leaf), and Erigeron annuus (whole). The extracts with glycation inhibitory activity also showed antioxidative activity when a micellar linoleic acid peroxidation system was applied followed by 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation decolorization and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging assays. The glycation inhibitory activity was significantly correlated with the antioxidative potency of the extracts. The positive glycation inhibitory and antioxidative activities of these plants might suggest a possible role in targeting aging and diabetic complications.  相似文献

To evaluate the possible effects on insulin function, 49 herb, spice, and medicinal plant extracts were tested in the insulin-dependent utilization of glucose using a rat epididymal adipocyte assay. Cinnamon was the most bioactive product followed by witch hazel, green and black teas, allspice, bay leaves, nutmeg, cloves, mushrooms, and brewer's yeast. The glucose oxidation enhancing bioactivity was lost from cinnamon, tea, witch hazel, cloves, bay leaf and allspice by poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) treatment, indicating that the active phytochemicals are likely to be phenolic in nature. The activity of sage, mushrooms, and brewers's yeast was not removed by PVP. Some products such as Korean ginseng, flaxseed meal, and basil have been reported to be effective antidiabetic agents; however, they were only marginally active in our assay. Our technique measures direct stimulation of cellular glucose metabolism, so it may be that the active phytochemicals in these plants improve glucose metabolism via other mechanisms or that this in vitro screening is not a reliable predictor of hypoglycemic effects in vivo for some products. In summary, the positive effects of specific plant extracts on insulin activity suggest a possible role of these plants in improving glucose and insulin metabolism.  相似文献

Lowland heathland habitats are recognized to be of high conservation value throughout north-west Europe. Current management approaches focus on arresting natural succession to woodland, and include the use of vegetation cutting, burning and grazing by livestock. However, the introduction of grazing has proved controversial, highlighting the need for evidence regarding its effectiveness. A systematic review of the scientific literature was therefore performed, which identified 13 studies with appropriate comparators (such as untreated controls). Meta-analysis of these data indicated that grazing can result in an increase in the ratio of grassland to ericoid shrub cover, but insufficient experimental evidence was available to assess the effectiveness of any other intervention, indicating a lack of replicated studies with controls. Two forms of expert knowledge were also compiled, based on information in the scientific literature excluded from the meta-analysis, and questionnaire responses of heathland managers. While these two evidence sources were generally in close correspondence, beliefs of heathland managers contradicted the scientific literature with respect to the impact of grazing on the ratio of grassland to ericoid shrubs. Incorporating a range of evidence sources in systematic reviews can therefore provide insights into contradictions in the evidence base. While a large majority of practitioners (94%) believe that grazing is an effective management option for lowland heath, evidence for a number of negative impacts on habitat attributes was recorded, highlighting the need for improved monitoring and experimental analysis of the effectiveness of management interventions.  相似文献

Twelve edible plant extracts rich in polyphenols were screened for their potential to inhibit oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in vitro and to modulate LDL receptor (LDLr) activity in cultured HepG2 cells. The antioxidant activity (inhibition of LDL oxidation) was determined by measuring the formation of conjugated dienes (lag time) and thiobarbituric acid reagent substances (TBARS). Betel leaf (94%), cashew shoot (63%), Japanese mint (52%), semambu leaf (50%), palm frond (41%), sweet potato shoot, chilli fruit, papaya shoot, roselle calyx, and maman showed significantly increased lag time (>55 min, P < 0.05) and inhibition of TBARS formation (P < 0.05) compared to control. LDLr was significantly up-regulated (P < 0.05) by Japanese mint (67%), semambu (51%), cashew (50%), and noni (49%). Except for noni and betel leaf, most plant extracts studied demonstrated a positive association between antioxidant activity and the ability to up-regulate LDL receptor. Findings suggest that reported protective actions of plant polyphenols on lipoprotein metabolism might be exerted at different biochemical mechanisms.  相似文献
